5 Ways to Teach Your Kids Their Family Growing up in my family meant roast Christmas dinners, dances, piñatas, posadas and desserts, were not simply fun Christmas traditions, they were lessons in the cultural heritage of my family. In an effort to assimilate into the American way of life, many families have discarded their cultural customs in favor of new traditions. But learning about other countries and cultures is an important part of a child’s education and where better to start than with one’s own family. The population of first- and second-generation immigrant children continues to grow in the United States and it’s important they be taught their families’ heritage in addition to their new country’s traditions. But even if you have to research your own lineage to discover your family’s country of origin, it should be part your child’s education. Here are some ways to teach your children about their heritage. 1. Start with the Earlier Generations Grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts and uncles who are originally from other parts of the world can offer a wealth of information about their native country. Suggest that your children interview these relatives, asking questions about where they grew up, the cultural foods they ate, traditions they practiced, games they played and the holidays they celebrated. Discuss which of these traditions your family might be able to carry on, such as celebrating a national holiday. 2. Learn with Food There are often specific types of foods associated with individual countries. Good manners are important for considering the feelings of other people and being the kind of person that others will like and respect. In the ‘olden days’ children were taught about the Golden Rule, “Always do to others as you would wish them to do to you if you were in their place.” This is still a good way to behave nowadays. If you are respectful to others then you are more likely to be treated with respect by them. If you show good manners everywhere you go, you are more likely to encourage others to behave in the same way towards you. Basic Examples of Good Manners and Etiquettes • Choose your words wisely and don’t rush to comment about things you don’t know much about. Being a good listener is often better than speaking. You don’t need to have an opinion on everything. • Think things out before you speak, especially if you are a person who may be poor at finding the right words to say. Don’t start a sentence, with ‘ums’ and ‘ers’ in between, it seems awkward and you should try speaking to yourself in front of a mirror, it works! It increases your confident in speaking. • Don’t speak loudly. You will quickly lose respect if you do, as this can be seen as overbearing and rude. It can also make other people angry and upset with you before you even establish some kind of relationship with them. They will see you as a ‘big mouth’ who cannot be trusted with anything confidential. So practice turning your volume down if you tend to have a loud voice. • Speak with respect to and of others. You can do this by avoiding negative remarks that may insult someone else. The general rule is- if you don’t want someone to speak about you that way, you don’t speak about them to others.
• Do not ever speak of bodily functions even if it is a casual conversation, such as using the bathroom or telling crude jokes, for this shows sign of immaturity and often creates a bad impression of you with your friends, family, and co-workers. • Always respect older people and listen to them and learn. This applies to all elders and not just parents and grandparents. • Using the terms ‘Thank You’, and ‘You are Welcome’ shows that you have good manners. People who lack manners do not use these terms. • Hold open a door for anyone following you closely. This is a sign of a good manner and has never changed. There are no strict gender rules in this day and age. • Speak highly of your parents respect them, even if there are things about them that you do not like. If you cannot do that, stay away from speaking about them at all. It looks bad to insult or speak badly of the people who brought you into this world or raised you. Don’t wash dirty family laundry in public. It is negative and rude. • Do not swear to use filth language and curse words. It is unprofessional! People who do this are usually very immature and have no self-control or respect for themselves and others! Good manners are simply respect and consideration for others or being aware of the needs of others. They are the oil which lubricates the friction of interpersonal relations and creates a happy and successful society. So, Give Respect and Take Respect!

Tips for Parents of College Students since professors want to give students a chance to test the waters without great risk to their final grade. Upshot? If your child gets a bad grade on some early quiz or assignment, don’t send in the troops. Most students will do better as the course goes on. 5. Protect the last month of the semester. In many college courses, up to 70 percent of the course grade is awarded in the last month of the semester. Do not distract your child with winter vacation plans, worries about finances or what to major in, family events and celebrations, or other activities during the crucial November-December and April-May periods. These are “make or break” times for your child. Respect them.
Parents can be the best guide for students during their college search and decision process. Each year more than 17 million students enroll in college — 5 million for the first time. Here are our best tips for parents of new, and returning, college students (and if your kid isn’t yet in college, here’s a glimpse ahead of what you’ll be facing): 1. Don’t pick your child’s courses. An important part of getting settled into college is finding the courses that best suit the student’s interests and best satisfy the college requirements. Let the academic adviser do his or her job. 2. Help your kid develop his or her passion. The single most important thing in college is that your student develop a true interest that he or she can enjoy throughout life. Let your child grow into his or her passion. Do not pressure him or her to major too early, or to pick a field solely for its job prospects. Let your kid spend the first two years of college exploring many possibilities, without undue direction from you. 3. Encourage the student to go see the professor. One of the hidden resources at every college is the professor’s office hour. A required part of every professor’s job, the three or four office hours each week are the time that professors are available for one-on-one conferences to help the students with their papers and tests. Encourage your kid to avail him or herself of this free service as often as appropriate.You’ve paid for it, why not use it? 4. Don’t panic too soon. In most college courses, there are many graded pieces of work — quizzes, homework, a midterm, a research paper, lab reports, a term paper, and a final exam. As a result, each piece of work counts a small percentage of the final grade. What’s more, the earlier pieces count less than the rest,
6. Talk about the realities of excessive drinking, drugs, and partying. Many college students experiment with campus drinking, recreational drugs, and all too much partying. First-year students can quickly get in over their heads and wind up causing all sorts of danger — both to themselves and to others. Educate your children about the importance of acting responsibly — even when their college-mates are acting stupidly. 7. Direct your kid to appropriate campus resources. Sometimes in spite of your best efforts, a child has difficulty in college — either academic or personal. Alert your kid to the many college services available free of charge. The writing center, the counseling center, the health service, the international student center, the academic advancement center, the center for students with disabilities. All of these are available to help your student on a moment’s notice. If your kid is in trouble, consult the college website or catalogue for a complete listing of the college resources. Then encourage your student to go. No matter how your kid does at college, you’ll always be his or her parent. And he or she will always be your child. Show concern, compassion, and love throughout your kid’s college life. College is a hard thing. It’s made easier when parents show that they care.

SOÑADORES Jaime Guevara quien a pesar de las adversidades de la vida, ha logrado sobresalir en sus estudios convirtiéndose en un joven emprendor de nuestra comunidad, gracias a su actitud, esfuerzo y al programa DACA que fue el escalón para seguir sus sueños. ¿Quién es Jaime David Guevara? Tengo 24 Años y soy un aprendiz ávido, jugador, amante del aire libre y por lo tanto tengo la suerte de vivir en Idaho. De hecho, he estado viviendo en Idaho por dieciséis años, la mayor parte de mi vida desde que llegué a la edad de los 8 años en el 2001. Me encanta salir con mi familia, amigos y mi perro Logan. Que has estudiado? Me gradué de Eagle High School en el 2010, y fuí aceptado a Valparaiso University, ubicado en Valparaíso, Indiana. Comencé mi carrera académica como estudiante de Ingeniería Mecánica, sin embargo en el 2011 mi madre falleció y yo necesitaba regresar a casa, donde me trasladé a Boise State University. Durante los dos años siguientes luché para hacer frente a la pérdida de mi madre, ayudar a mi padre y atender a mi hermanita. Eventualmente tuve que dejar la escuela debido a la carga financiera familiar, y con el fin de reponerme a mí mismo.
Hoy día, cientos de jóvenes hispanos están siendo beneficiados por el programa DACA que les dio una esperanza de tener una mejor calidad de vida y sobretodo la gran oportunidad de demostrar el valioso trabajo que nuestros jóvenes pueden hacer en aporte a este país, tanto en conocimiento como en mano de obra. Actualmente hay una gran preocupación por la continuación de DACA y esperamos que esta esperanza no termine y que nuestros soñadores logren sacar adelante sus estudios y ser los mejores profesionales del futuro. Este programa de acción diferida permitió al Dreamer Jaime David Guevara trabajar legalmente, retomar sus estudios universitarios y no preocuparse por ser deportado. Invitamos a Jaime David Guevara, como un ejemplo de tantos niños hispanos que llegaron a este país con sus familias y que crecieron adoptándose a una nueva cultura americana haciendosen cada dia parte de ella.

En el 2016 volví a Boise State, después de visitar a mi consejero y volver a registrarme a Boise State. En otoño del mismo año volví a la escuela, esta vez como un especialista en Ciencias de Computación, y desde entonces he hecho todo lo posible para mantener mis estudios, e involucrarme en tantas oportunidades en el campus como sea posible sin sobrecargarme. Esto incluye trabajar en el Laboratorio de Materiales Magnéticos de la Escuela Micron de Ciencia de Materiales e Ingeniería bajo la guía del Dr. Peter Müllner, donde les ayudo con el análisis y recopilación de datos, y la programación de sistemas. También he logrado una pasantía a través del Programa de Pasantías para Estudiantes de Blue Waters (BWSIP), que es una colaboración del Centro Nacional para Aplicaciones de Supercomputacion (NCSA), la National Science Foundation (NSF), el National Computational Science Institute (NCSI), varios programas nacionales de alto rendimiento, y organizado por Shodor, una organización nacional sin fines de lucro centrada en la mejoría de la enseñanza de matemáticas y ciencias a través de la ciencia computacional. A pesar de tener un título de muchas palabras, el BWSIP me ha permitido aprender y expandir mis habilidades bajo la tutela del Dr. Eric Jankowski en Boise State, y también me permitió usar el superordenador Blue Waters para simulaciones, lo cual es muy bueno para mí. Por último, también me he convertido en parte del programa de Oportunidades de Estudiantes para la Investigación Aerotransportada (SOAR) de la NASA en Boise State, en el equipo de Ciencias de Computación como programador, e implementando lo que he aprendido en clase, trabajo, y mis prácticas, hacia la entrega de un módulo desplegable para la medición de datos a gran altitud. ¿Cómo te ha ayudado DACA? Definitivamente he decidido usar mi DACA para regresar a la escuela, y ahora puedo pagar la matrícula en el estado de mi educación que hace que sea más fácil, ya que es algo que yo pago de mi bolsillo, porque no puedo solicitar FAFSA. Tener DACA también ha sido beneficioso para poder obtener una licencia de conducir, y sobre todo: conseguir un trabajo. Con toda honestidad, tener DACA ha sido una gran ayuda para mí, no porque me haya sido una limosna, sino porque al menos me dio el terreno para avanzar y hacer algo por mí mismo.
¿Cuál es su preocupación si cancelan DACA? Mi mayor preocupación es tener que regresar a un lugar que, para todos los efectos, ya no reconozco y no llamo mi hogar. Sí, es mi lugar de nacimiento, pero he sido educado aquí en los Estados Unidos y he llegado a considerarme americano. Por la forma en que hablo, por lo que pienso, ahora soy estadounidense, y volver a Colombia al perder DACA sería como obligarme a salir de mi hogar a un lugar extranjero. Que mensaje envía a todos los dreamers? No se den por vencidos, sigan adelante, y acuérdense de que por nuestra situación tenemos que dar el ejemplo de que no estamos aquí para quitar trabajos, sino para mejorarnos a nosotros y a nuestra sociedad. Aun así lleguen a quitar DACA no hay que tener miedo, porque todo lo que han aprendido no se los pueden quitar. Si quieren llorar, lloren, pero no se den por vencidos. Recuerden que esto tambien pasara.

Currently, there are hundreds of young Hispanics who are benefitting from DACA, a program which gave them hope in being able to attain a better quality of life and, above all, the great opportunity to show the valuable work that our youth can offer this country, just as much in knowledge as in labor. Actually, there is a great worry surrounding the continuation of DACA, and we hope that this hope does not end, and that our DREAMERS push forward in their studies and become the best professionals in the future. This deferred action program allowed Jaime David Guevara, a DREAMER, to work legally, resume his collegiate studies, and not worry about deportation. We invite Jaime David Guevara, as an example of all the Hispanic children that arrived to this country with their family and that grew adapting themselves to the American culture, each day making themselves a part of it. Jaime Guevara, who in spite of life’s adversities, has managed to stand out in his studies, becoming an enterprising young man of our community, thanks to his actions, effort, and to DACA, which served as the step needed to pursue his dreams.
In 2016 I returned to Boise State, after visiting with my advisor and re-applying to Boise State. By Fall of the same year I was back in school, this time as a Computer Science major, and since then I’ve done my best to keep my studies up, and involve myself in as many opportunities around campus as I am able to without going overboard. This includes working in the Micron School of Materials Science and Engineering’s Magnetic Materials Lab under the guidance of Dr. Peter Müllner, where I help with data analysis, data collection, and systems programming. I have also attained an internship through the Blue Waters Student Internship Program (BWSIP), which is a collaboration of the National Center for Supercomputer Applications (NCSA), the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Computational Science Institute (NCSI), various national High Performance Computing programs, and organized by Shodor, a national non-profit organization focused on the improvement of math and science education through computational science. Although wordy, the BWSIP has allowed me to learn and expand my skills under the mentorship of Dr. Eric Jankowski at Boise State, and also allowed me to use the Blue Waters supercomputer for simulations, which is pretty cool to me. Finally, I have also become a part of the NASA Student Opportunities for Airborne Research (SOAR) program at Boise State, in the Computer Science team as a programmer, and further implementing what I’ve learned in class, work, and my internship, towards delivering a deployable module for high altitude data measurement. How has DACA helped you? I have definitely decided to put my DACA to use by going back to school, and I can now pay in-state tuition for my education which makes it easier since it’s something that I pay for out of pocket since I cannot apply for FAFSA. Having DACA has also been beneficial in being able to get a driver’s license, and above all else: getting a job. In all honesty, having DACA has been a great help for me, not because I was handed anything but because it at least gave me the ground to push forward and make something of myself. What is your concern if DACA is canceled?
Who is Jaime David Guevara? I am twenty-four years old and I am an avid learner, gamer, and allaround lover of the outdoors and therefore I am lucky to live in Idaho. In fact I’ve been living in Idaho for the better part of sixteen years, ever since I arrived at the age of eight back in 2001. I love to hang out with my family, friends, and my dog Logan. What have you studied? I graduated from Eagle High School in 2010, and was accepted into Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana. I began my academic career, as a Mechanical Engineering student, however in 2011 my mother passed away and I needed to return home, where I transferred to Boise State University. For the next couple of years I struggled coping with the loss of my mother, with helping my father, and tending to my sister. Eventually I had to leave school due to the financial burden, and in order to sort myself out.
My biggest worry having to go back to a place that for all intents and purposes I no longer recognize, and do not call my home. Yes it is my place of birth, but I have been raised here in the U.S. and have come to consider myself American. From the way I talk, to the way I think, I am now an American, and going back to Colombia by losing DACA would be like getting forced to leave home for a foreign place. What message do you want to give your fellow Dreamers? Don’t give up, continue pushing forward, and remember that because of the situation we find ourselves in, we have to be an example that we are not here to take jobs, but to better ourselves and our community. Even if they take DACA away, do not be afraid, because they’ll never take what you’ve learned. If fear makes you want to cry, then cry, but do not give up. Remember, this too shall pass.
