When I heard of the program Mirada Miss Covergirl I wanted to join so that I can learn how to be more social and meet new friends. On the first day I saw every girl that was in the program and I thought to my self that there was no way that I was either going to win or fit in because I was bigger that the other girls involved. But when I met the past queens I realized that it really isn’t just the outside that matters but what you learn and develop in the inside during the program. During the program I learned to socialize more and get out of my comfort zone and not lose confidence just for looking a certain way because pretty is in the inside.

Hands-free device law now in effect in Meridian city boundaries
A new year means new laws, and as of New Years Day, it is illegal to hold a phone while driving in Meridian. If you’re caught holding a phone while texting or talking to someone on a call, it will likely result in an infraction and a $90 fine, plus court costs. But don’t panic-- if you don’t have hands-free call and texting capabilities already installed in your car, there are several products at stores such as Best Buy that can help you avoid a ticket.
“This is the Plantronics,” said Robert Hall, Sales Supervisor at Best Buy. “So it’s just a single individual earpiece -- it’s got a boom that comes down, so it actually picks up your voice quality a lot better.” Best Buy can replace your entire radio for a product like the SONY Bluetooth AM/FM Radio, but if you don’t want to go to such extreme measures, Hall has more ideas.
“You can actually put Alexa in your car, and be able to do the voice commands, and ask it how the weather’s doing. But at the same time you’re able to make and receive phone calls as well, just by using your voice,” said Hall. Apple Airpods can do the trick as well.
Or if you’re looking for something a bit cheaper, you can buy something like a Handsfree Car Kit with FM Transmitter, which plugs into your cigarette lighter. On your smartphone, you just go into your settings and tap the “Bluetooth” option, select the device, turn your radio to a previously set station -- and when you get a call, you can keep your hands on the wheel while chatting.
Meridian is the first city in the Treasure Valley to pass such a measure, although cities in other parts of Idaho have passed similar ordinances.

DHS Aims to Expand Facial Recognition at Border to Include U.S. Citizens Facial recognition technology has been creeping into American airports for a few years, but now the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is trying to give its agents the ability to perform mandatory face scans on all U.S. citizens traveling into and out of the country.

Now it seems that DHS doesn’t want U.S. citizens to get a pass. As the Identity Project reports, the DHS has proposed in a recent filing that it will expand its current facial recognition policy “to provide that all travelers, including US citizens, may be required to be photographed upon entry and/or departure” from the country.
Among his concerns, Stanley referenced the U.S. Customs and Border Protections revealing this summer that photos of travelers as well as their license plates were compromised in a cyberattack targeting a federal subcontractor.
DHS has been testing facial recognition systems at U.S. airports since 2016. That technology used photos taken of people at TSA checkpoints for facial verification for the identity of international travelers. Earlier this year, BuzzFeed obtained documents that revealed DHS was planning to implement that system at the country’s top 20 airports by 2021. But the current rules state that U.S. citizens are exempt from such biometric checks.
The planned expansion of this biometric system policy has been condemned by the American Civil Liberties Union. “Time and again, the government told the public and members of Congress that U.S. citizens would not be required to submit to this intrusive surveillance technology as a condition of traveling,” ACLU senior policy analyst Jay Stanley said in a

Stanley said lawmakers should intervene to stop the agency from implementing this type of surveillance technology.

Be open to their ideas and concerns. Help direct their energy by encouraging them to take positive actions to bring about the changes they want to see.
5. Don’t expect more from them than you would from another adult. That said, don’t excuse all indiscretions or errors in judgment just because they’re young.
6. Be careful about interrupting. Young people can be easily discouraged.
7. Don’t move too fast. Remember – this is all new for young people!
8. Connect them with other adults who can help. You know a broad network of people in different fields who may be able to help a young person gain the knowledge, access, or experience they need to achieve their goals. Make the connection by introducing young people to your peers and colleagues as appropriate.
