Health issues that cause people pain don't vary much from place to place—not enough to explain why, in 2012, health care providers in the highest-prescribing state wrote almost 3 times as many opioid painkiller prescriptions per person as those in the lowest prescribing state in the US. Or why there are twice as many painkiller prescriptions per person in the US as in Canada. Data suggest that where health care providers practice influences how they prescribe. Higher prescribing of painkillers is associated with more overdose deaths. More can be done at every level to prevent overprescribing while ensuring patients' access to safe, effective pain treatment. Changes at the state level show particular promise.

States can Consider ways to increase use of prescription drug monitoring programs, which are state-run databases that track prescriptions for painkillers and can help find problems in overprescribing. Use of these programs is greater when they make data available in real-time, are universal (used by all prescribers for all controlled substances), and are actively managed (for example, send alerts to prescribers when problems are identified).

Consider policy options (including laws and regulation) relating to pain clinics (facilities that specialize in pain treatment) to reduce prescribing practices that are risky to patients.

The 1, 2, 3 of Guillain-BarrĂŠ syndrom If you are feeling tingling and weakness in the legs, extending to the arms, difficulty breathing, and your blood pressure is altered, you might be acquiring Guillain-Barre syndrome, a disorder that attacks the immune system of people, directly affecting the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord, causing disruption of messages being processed and flow to rest of the body.

No one yet knows why Guillain-BarrĂŠ syndrome strikes some people and not others. No one knows exactly what causes this disease, but the most common symptoms are tingling and weakness in the legs that spreads to the arms, hand tremors, rapid and erratic movement of the pupils. If not treated early you can become paralyzed and have difficulty breathing, as well as a change in blood pressure and heart rate and it could become fatal, although the vast majority of convalescents recover. This disorder affects anyone of any age or gender. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) one patient in a hundred thousand is affected.

According to WHO, the syndrome occurs several days after the patient has had a respiratory infection caused by a virus or some gastrointestinal one.

Even vaccines can trigger the disorder! The development by your body may take a few days to three weeks. When we talk about syndrome we must specify that the simplest definition is a cluster of several symptoms and signs, making it difficult to diagnose, because it can be confused with other diseases.

Although there is no proper cure, with certain therapies you may control the severity of the disease and you can be restored. If you or someone close has weakness in the legs, hand tremors and cannot hold or a cup of coffee or has involuntary movement of the eyes and eyelids, go to an emergency room or call 911. Usted podría estar adquiriendo el sindrome de GuillainBarré, que es un trastorno que ataca al sistema inmunológico de las personas, afectando directamente los nervios que están fuera del cerebro y de la médula espinal, causando interrupción de los mensajes que se procesan y fluyen al resto del cuerpo.

Nadie conoce aún por qué el Síndrome de Guillain-Barré ataca a algunas personas y a otras no. Ni nadie sabe con exactitud qué es lo que causa esta enfermedad, pero los síntomas más comunes son cosquilleo y debilidad en las piernas que se extiende a los brazos, temblores en las manos, movimiento de las pupilas rápida y erráticas.

Éste trastorno afecta a a cualquier persona de cualquier edad o género. Según la Organización Mundial de la Salud (WHO, por sus siglas en inglés) un paciente de cada cien mil es afectado. Según la OMS el síndrome se presenta varios días luego de que el paciente haya tenido una infección respiratoria causada por algún virus o de

tipo gastrointestinal. ¡Hasta las vacunas pueden disparar el trastorno!

El desarrollo por su cuerpo puede tardar de unos días a tres semanas.

Cuando hablamos de síndrome debemos especificar qué la definición más sencilla es un ramillete de varios síntomas y signos, lo que hace dificíl su diagnostico, porque se le puede confundir con otras enfermedades.

Aunque no hay propiamente una cura, con ciertas terapias se le puede controlar la gravedad de la enfermedad y usted se restablece.

Si usted o alguien cercano tiene debilidad en las piernas, temblores en las manos y no puede sostener ni una taza de café o tiene movimiento involuntarios de las pupilas y parpados, vaya a una emergencia o llame al 911. Las únicas recomendaciones que hay de prevención son: evitar infectarse por virus como el VIH o las hepatitis, como también las picaduras de mosquitos. Una nota a considerar con respecto a este síndrome, es que estudios recientes han arrojado datos que indican una fuerte asociación entre el virus del zika y esta enfermedad.

Being bipolar is not an easy thing The exact causes of bipolar disorder are not fully known. However, they are linked to chemical imbalance in the brain that causes sudden mood change in the person who suffers. It is also known as manic depressive disorder.

If you feel depression frequently, you should know that sometimes this disease is hereditary, so if you have a close relative who suffers from it, it may be transmitted to you with your genetic makeup.

What happens when a person has bipolar disorder, sometimes they feel full of energy and have desires to do any activity, this is called mania because it can change to a feeling of sadness; and depression, then they want to do absolutely nothing, this is called depression. This disorder can lead one to be happy then sad in a second; this sudden change of personality is called bipolar.

Some signs include:

1. Sadness for no reason 2. Feeling important 3. Easily angered 4. Difficulty concentrating 5. Suffering from insomnia 6. Feeling that it is not worth it to live 7. Talking too fast 8. Mourning easily 9. Headaches, backaches 10. Consuming a lot of alcohol and drugs The way for you to feel better and live a normal life is to be treated by your doctor. Since 2001 he continued his career in the US as a contract investigator in Columbia University. The word dementia is derived from Latin and means out of one’s mind. Dementia is not a disease as such but rather is a syndrome that could have several origins. Alzheimer's disease is not the only cause of dementia, however this represents more than half of all dementias. Generally, but perhaps more in the Hispanic culture, people tend to think that old age is synonymous with dementia and / or vice versa, which really is not true. According to information presented at the ICAD (International Conference on Alzheimer's disease) in July 2008, Hispanics with Alzheimer's disease see doctors belatedly, despite suffering from the symptoms of dementia seven years before than non-Hispanics. More worrying is the fact that in the United States forty percent of Hispanics affected live without being diagnosed and without treatment. The annual cost of dementia in the US is approximately 150 billion dollars. In this same order, a modest relationship mutations in 10q / 12q chromosomes and a strong relationship on chromosome 18q have been found in Hispanics (JH Lee, R Mayeux, Molecular Psychiatry, July 2006).

Likewise, there are risk factors for Alzheimer's disease, having a greater risk of having it if they are female, Hispanic (seven times more), if you have a history of head trauma (three to four times more), low education, down syndrome, relatives affected with Alzheimer's disease, metabolic syndrome (high blood pressure, abdominal obesity, high blood glucose, abnormal blood fats), etc.

The diagnosis of the disease becomes clinically based on the histories of relatives and patient behavior. You can use blood tests and imaging tests to exclude other diseases with similar manifestations and / or symptoms. The definitive diagnosis is made by finding injury or typical markers of the disease by histopathology after the death of the victim.

The most important areas that could be involved in Alzheimer's disease are: memory, speech, attention, orientation and ability to solve problems. Individuals who suffer from it, start forgetting the names of friends, relatives, where they kept the keys and then continue forgetting parts of their personal history even getting lost in their own neighborhood or home. In this same line of ideas, the Alzheimer's type dementia is progressive and has different stages, ranging from stage one and two, dysfunctions very slight and imperceptible to the patient and others, to a stage six and seven, with very severe difficulty, where the patient loses speech, only remembers his/her name, has no ability to eat, bathe, laugh and loses touch with reality.

Unfortunately, there is still no cure for the disease; however, a management relief exists for patients and their families, ranging from the use of drugs (donepezil, galantamine, memantine, rivastigmine, tacrine etc), psychotherapies, to special cares for the patient. Similarly, there is no definitive evidence to support a type of diet or particular measure to prevent disease. However, it is recommended to reduce modifiable risk factors mentioned above, such as high blood pressure, high glucose (sugar) levels in the blood, high cholesterol, etc. Notice that these factors could be modified favorably with changes in our lifestyle and eating a healthy diet.

Finally, we will share some recommendations for relatives, friends or caregivers of these patients, taken from the Internet site of the Alzheimer's Association: monitor any discomfort (pain, hunger, sleep, infection, fatigue, full bladder, room temperature), ensure good sleeping habits (early exposure to light, daily exercise, avoid drugs before going to bed, fixed meal times), avoid confrontation and arguments, re-direct them to be flexible and patient, create a calm and simple atmosphere, allow them good rest, provide safe objects and respect their modesty, equip the doors with secure locks and keep weapons out of reach.

Así mismo, existen factores de riesgo para la enfermedad de Alzheimer, teniéndose mayor riesgo de padecerla si se es mujer, hispano (siete veces más), si se tiene historia de trauma de cabeza (tres a cuatro veces más), baja educación, síndrome de down, familiares afectados con Alzheimer, síndrome metabólico (presión alta, obesidad abdominal, glucosa alta, alteración de las grasas en sangre), etc.

El diagnostico de la enfermedad se hace clínicamente basado en las historias de los familiares y comportamiento del paciente.

Se puede recurrir a exámenes de sangre y estudios de imágenes para excluir otras enfermedades con manifestaciones y/o síntomas similares. El diagnostico definitivo se hace encontrando lesiones o marcadores típicos de la enfermedad mediante estudios histopatológicos después de la muerte del afectado.

La palabra Demencia deriva del latín y significa alejado de la mente. La Demencia no es una enfermedad como tal sino más bien es un síndrome que podría tener varios orígenes. La enfermedad del Alzheimer no es la única causa de demencia, sin embargo esta representa más de la mitad de todos los tipos de demencia. De manera general, pero tal vez más dentro de la cultura hispana, las personas tienden a pensar que la vejez es sinónimo demencia y/o viceversa, lo cual realmente no es cierto.

De acuerdo a las informaciones presentadas en la ICAD (siglas en Ingles para conferencia Internacional de la enfermedad de Alzheimer) en Julio 2008, los hispanos con enfermedad de Alzheimer consultan los médicos de forma tardía, a pesar de padecer de los síntomas de demencia siete años antes que los no hispanos. Más preocupante resulta el dato, de que en Estados Unidos el cuarenta por ciento de los hispanos afectados viven sin ser diagnosticados y sin tratamiento. El costo anual de la demencia en USA es de aproximadamente 150 billones de dólares. Por consiguiente, consideramos de vital importancia compartir informaciones sobre esta entidad, la cual cubre con sombras de agonías los recuerdos de quienes la padecen y los pasea, en cuerpos vivos sin memoria, frente a la triste penumbra del olvido.

Aloysius “Alois” Alzheimer, psiquiatra neuropatólogo, primero en publicar un caso de demencia en mil novecientos seis, la definió como un desorden fatal y progresivo de deterioro cognitivo que afecta las neuronas causando dificultad con la memoria, el lenguaje, el pensamiento y la conducta. Nótese, que la enfermedad encierra daños neuronales, los cuales se manifiestan con alteraciones de conducta mas allá de los atribuibles al envejecimiento normal y que no se limitan únicamente a la perdida de memoria.

Las áreas más importantes que podrían estar comprometidas en la enfermedad de Alzheimer son: la memoria, el lenguaje, la atención, orientación y la capacidad para resolver problemas. Los individuos quienes la padecen, comienzan olvidando los nombres de amigos, familiares, donde guardaron las llaves y luego continúan olvidando parte de su historia personal, hasta llegar a perderse en su propio vecindario o casa. En esta misma línea de ideas, la demencia tipo Alzheimer es progresiva y tiene diferentes etapas, las cuales van desde un estadio uno y dos, de disfunción muy leve e imperceptible para el paciente y los demás, hasta un estadio seis y siete, de dificultad muy severa, donde el paciente pierde el lenguaje, solo recuerda su nombre, no tiene habilidad para comer, bañarse, reír y pierde el contacto con la realidad.

Lamentablemente, todavía no hay cura para la enfermedad, no obstante existe un manejo de alivio para los pacientes y sus familiares, que abarca desde el uso de medicamentos (donepezil, galantamina, memantina, rivastigmina, tacrina etc), sicoterapias, hasta cuidados especiales del paciente. De la misma manera, no hay evidencia definitiva que soporte un tipo de dieta o medida en particular para prevenir la enfermedad. Sin embargo, se recomienda disminuir los factores de riesgos modificables mencionados anteriormente, como la presión alta, glucosa (azúcar) alta en sangre, colesterol elevado, etc. Fíjense, que estos factores podrían ser modificados favorablemente con cambios en nuestro estilo de vida y siguiendo una dieta saludable.

Por ultimo, compartiremos algunas recomendaciones para los familiares, amigos o personas que cuidan estos enfermos, extraídas del sitio en el Internet de la asociación de Alzheimer : monitorizar cualquier malestar (dolor, hambre, sueno, infección, fatiga, vejiga llena, temperatura de la habitación) , aseguren buenos hábitos para el sueno (exposición temprana a la luz, ejercicios diarios, eviten los medicamentos antes de ir a la cama, horarios fijos de comidas ), eviten confrontarlos o discutir alguna verdad, re diríjanlos siendo flexibles y pacientes, creen un ambiente calmado y simple, permítanles un buen descanso, provean objetos seguros y respeten su pudor, equipen las puertas con cerraduras seguras y retiren armas de su alcance.

From Greece to the trash: Diogenes Have you noticed that an elderly family member, perhaps your grandfather, has stopped grooming, his physical appearance denotes carelessness, collects garbage, piles up meaningless objects, lives socially isolated, neglects their own food and, of course, does not admit detours from their behavior? It is quite possible that the person described here is developing Diogenes Syndrome. De Grecia a la basura: síndrome de Diógenes ¿Ha notado que un anciano miembro de su familia, quizás su abuelo, ha dejado de asearse, su físico denota descuido, acumula basura, amontona objetos sin sentido, vive aislado socialmente, descuida su propia alimentación y por supuesto, no admite los desvíos de su conducta? Es muy posible que la persona que describimos aquí esté desarrollando el Síndrome de Diógenes.

Este mal, que suele acompañarse de la demencia, se manifiesta en personas de ambos géneros, y no guarda relación con el estado económico ni la profesión de las personas, ricos y pobres son afectados. ¿Qué es y cómo se detecta el síndrome?

El síndrome de Diógenes es un trastorno obsesivo que proviene de un desorden psiquiátrico cuya manifestación más reconocible es la acumulación de objetos desechables, a lo cual suma la falta de higiene, aislamiento social, descuido y negación de conducta anormal. Usando como base la acumulación de objetos inservibles, el síndrome ha sido clasificado en dos tipos por los expertos: Activo y Pasivo. Al primero se suman las personas que se dedican a colectar objetos en su hogar, en tanto que el segundo grupo corresponde a personas que sencillamente se dejan invadir por objetos que ellos no tiran a la basura y que creen podrían necesitar algún día. Tenga en cuenta que el solo hecho de acumular objetos no le convierte en afectado de Síndrome de Diógenes, las otras características deben manifestarse también para completar un cuadro diagnosticable.

El nombre de este desorden de la conducta proviene del antiguo filósofo cínico griego Diógenes (Siglo IV A.C.), muy conocido por su austera forma de vivir y comer –se cuenta que vivía en una tinaja- y de quien se dice andaba con una linterna durante el día buscando a un hombre honesto. ¿Cuáles son las causas? ¿Tiene cura la enfermedad?

Las causas que generan esta enfermedad son factores asociados al estilo de vida que lleve la persona, inestabilidad económica, el rechazo de la familia, trastornos mentales (como el inicio de la demencia senil), muertes de seres queridos, y hay serios indicios de herencia genética. Lo más recomendable si detecta síntomas en algún familiar es llevarle al médico de cabecera e informarle sobre sus observaciones al galeno. El doctor recomendará llevar a su familiar a un especialista en estos trastornos en donde harán evaluaciones para determinar la gravedad del caso. Si el síndrome ha avanzado mucho se hará difícil razonar con el paciente, así que es imprescindible acudir a su médico tan pronto observe los síntomas descritos. Existen psicoterapias que ayudan a controlar su desarrollo, y en casos avanzados, los especialistas utilizan antidepresivos para controlar el avance. ¡Actué rápido, no tome con ligereza los síntomas!

Everyday nervous tics If you suddenly see someone winking and you understand that this person is overdoing themselves or is doing it at an inadequate time or persistently, be careful before defending yourself, you should know that there are people who are affected by Tourette’s syndrome that causes people to have nervous tics.

The "tics" are spasms or involuntary and repetitive muscle movement that people cannot control voluntarily. They can occur in different parts of the body, at any time, without preference of sex or age.

People are more familiar with facial spasms, (winks, blinks, grimacing movement of eyebrows or mouth) but it also occurs in the extremities (kicking, running their hands through their hair); the head and face (sudden tilting movement, clicking the tongue, nose wrinkling, spitting, coughing, throat clearing); shoulder (downward movement, or to the side).

In general, the nervous tic is an organic response to a situation of anxiety, fear or discomfort (or combination thereof), the person issues a muscular response to relieve the stress it causes discomfort. This response to situations of anxiety through a tic coverts these spasms to voluntary, repetitive and habitual acts, which means that therapies they can be controlled and reduced by psychological.

Infants manifest tics at an early age, mostly temporary and benign types, which tend to disappear during development.

Studies provide data showing that the tics are more common in males than in females, and that infants are more affected than adults, which appear in ages from 6 to 8 years and often appear before 18 years of age. Although the tic may or may not disappear during the development of the individual, the causes that provoke them do not vanish. We recommend visiting a specialist behavior to work with your problem.

While there is no cure for tics, therapy sessions are required in which the professional, either a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist, will help you control them. Los “tics” son espasmos o movimiento muscular involuntario y repetitivo que las personas no pueden controlar voluntariamente.

Pueden manifestarse en diferentes partes del cuerpo, a cualquier hora, sin preferencia de sexo ni edad. La gente está más familiarizada con los espasmos faciales, (guiños de ojos, parpadeos, movimiento de cejas o muecas de boca) pero se manifiesta también en las extremidades (zapateando, alisando el pelo con las manos); la cabeza y cara (movimientos bruscos de ladeo, chascar la lengua, arrugar la nariz, escupir, toser, carraspear); hombro (movimiento de arriba abajo, o a los lados).

En general, el tic nervioso es una respuesta orgánica a una situación de ansiedad, miedo o malestar (o combinación de estas), en que la persona emite una respuesta muscular para aliviar la tensión que le produce el malestar.
