How can aluminum affect my health?

What is aluminum?

Aluminum is the most abundant metal in the earth's crust. It is always found combined with other elements such as oxygen, silicon, and fluorine. Aluminum as the metal is obtained from aluminum-containing minerals. Small amounts of aluminum can be found dissolved in water.

Aluminum metal is light in weight and silvery-white in appearance. Aluminum is used for beverage cans, pots and pans, airplanes, siding and roofing, and foil. Aluminum is often mixed with small amounts of other metals to form aluminum alloys, which are stronger and harder.

Aluminum compounds have many different uses, for example, as alums in water-treatment and alumina in abrasives and furnace linings. They are also found in consumer products such as antacids, astringents, buffered aspirin, food additives, cosmetics, and antiperspirants.

How might I be exposed to aluminum?

Virtually all food, water, air, and soil contain some aluminum.

The average adult in the U.S. eats about 7-9 mg aluminum per day in their food.

Breathing higher levels of aluminum dust in workplace air.

Living in areas where the air is dusty, where aluminum is mined or processed into aluminum metal, near certain hazardous waste sites, or where aluminum is naturally high.Eating substances containing high levels of aluminum (such as antacids) especially when eating or drinking citrus products at the same time.

Children and adults may be exposed to small amounts of aluminum from vaccinations. Very little enters your body from aluminum cooking utensils.

How can aluminum affect my health?

Only very small amounts of aluminum that you may inhale, ingest, or have skin contact with will enter the bloodstream.

Exposure to aluminum is usually not harmful, but exposure to high levels can affect your health. Workers who breathe large amounts of aluminum dusts can have lung problems, such as coughing or abnormal chest X-rays. Some workers who breathe aluminum dusts or aluminum fumes have decreased performance in some tests that measure functions of the nervous system.

Some people with kidney disease store a lot of aluminum in their bodies and sometimes develop bone or brain diseases which may be caused by the excess aluminum. Some studies show that people exposed to high levels of aluminum may develop Alzheimer's disease, but other studies have not found this to be true. We do not know for certain whether aluminum causes Alzheimer's disease.

Studies in animals show that the nervous system is a sensitive target of aluminum toxicity. Obvious signs of damage were not seen in animals after high oral doses of aluminum. However, the animals did not perform as well in tests that measured the strength of their grip or how much they moved around.

We do not know if aluminum will affect reproduction in people.

Aluminum does not appear to affect fertility in animals.

What is Alzheimer's Disease?

If you are 65 years or older and it becomes difficult to remember where you left your glasses, keys, cell phone and do not remember certain recent events or important dates, you might be a candidate for getting Alzheimer's disease. The loss of a substance called acetylcholine, which is necessary for brain function, results in the failing of communication between nerve cells and mental activities such as memory, learning and logical thinking become affected.

Alzheimer's causes loss of memory and changes behavior and character of the person who suffers from it. It is not a normal part of aging. It is more common than you think; it is estimated that 5.4 million people in the United States have Alzheimer's. The Alzheimer's Association reports on its website that "the number of people in the US with the disease will reach 16 million by 2050. Because 70% of people with Alzheimer's live in their homes, the impact of the disease spreads to millions of families, friends and caregivers.

The word dementia is derived from Latin and means out of one’s mind. Dementia is not a disease as such but rather is a syndrome that could have several origins. Alzheimer's disease is not the only cause of dementia, however this represents more than half of all dementias.

Generally, but perhaps more in the Hispanic culture, people tend to think that old age is synonymous with dementia and / or vice versa, which really is not true. La Demencia: Agonía De Recuerdos En La Penumbra Triste Del Olvido

La palabra Demencia deriva del latín y significa alejado de la mente. La Demencia no es una enfermedad como tal sino más bien es un síndrome que podría tener varios orígenes. La enfermedad del Alzheimer no es la única causa de demencia, sin embargo esta representa más de la mitad de todos los tipos de demencia. De manera general, pero tal vez más dentro de la cultura hispana, las personas tienden a pensar que la vejez es sinónimo demencia y/o viceversa, lo cual realmente no es cierto. De acuerdo a las informaciones presentadas en la ICAD (siglas en Ingles para conferencia Internacional de la enfermedad de Alzheimer) en Julio 2008, los hispanos con enfermedad de Alzheimer consultan los médicos de forma tardía, a pesar de padecer de los síntomas de demencia siete años antes que los no hispanos. Más preocupante resulta el dato, de que en Estados Unidos el cuarenta por ciento de los hispanos afectados viven sin ser diagnosticados y sin tratamiento. El costo anual de la demencia en USA es de aproximadamente 150 billones de dólares. Por consiguiente, consideramos de vital importancia compartir informaciones sobre esta entidad, la cual cubre con sombras de agonías los recuerdos de quienes la padecen y los pasea, en cuerpos vivos sin memoria, frente a la triste penumbra del olvido.

Aloysius “Alois” Alzheimer, psiquiatra neuropatólogo, primero en publicar un caso de demencia en mil novecientos seis, la definió como un desorden fatal y progresivo de deterioro cognitivo que afecta las neuronas causando dificultad con la memoria, el lenguaje, el pensamiento y la conducta.

Nótese, que la enfermedad encierra daños neuronales, los cuales se manifiestan con alteraciones de conducta mas allá de los atribuibles al envejecimiento normal y que no se limitan únicamente a la perdida de memoria.

La causa o etiología de la enfermedad de Alzheimer no es del todo conocida, sin embargo se ha relacionado a razones multifactoriales, todavía en debates e investigación, las cuales van desde la edad del individuo, la dieta y el ambiente, hasta factores genéticos. En ese sentido, se han vinculado a su origen y desarrollo el acumulo en las neuronas de placas seniles y ovillos neurofibrilares asociados a mutaciones de múltiples genes, dentro de los cuales se encuentran por mencionar algunos: los genes de la proteína precursora de amiloide, ubicado en el brazo largo del cromosoma

veintiuno, de la presenilina uno y dos, de la apolipoproteína E, entre otros. En ese mismo orden, se han encontrado en los hispanos una modesta relación en mutaciones en los cromosomas 10q/12q y una fuerte relación en el cromosoma 18q (JH Lee, R Mayeux, Psiquiatría Molecular, Julio 2006).

Así mismo, existen factores de riesgo para la enfermedad de Alzheimer, teniéndose mayor riesgo de padecerla si se es mujer, hispano (siete veces más), si se tiene historia de trauma de cabeza (tres a cuatro veces más), baja educación, síndrome de down, familiares afectados con Alzheimer, síndrome metabólico (presión alta, obesidad abdominal, glucosa alta, alteración de las grasas en sangre), etc.

El diagnostico de la enfermedad se hace clínicamente basado en las historias de los familiares y comportamiento del paciente. Se puede recurrir a exámenes de sangre y estudios de imágenes para excluir otras enfermedades con manifestaciones y/o síntomas similares. El diagnostico definitivo se hace encontrando lesiones o marcadores típicos de la enfermedad mediante estudios histopatológicos después de la muerte del afectado.

Las áreas más importantes que podrían estar comprometidas en la enfermedad de Alzheimer son: la memoria, el lenguaje, la atención, orientación y la capacidad para resolver problemas.

Los individuos quienes la padecen, comienzan olvidando los nombres de amigos, familiares, donde guardaron las llaves y luego continúan olvidando parte de su historia personal, hasta llegar a perderse en su propio vecindario o casa.

En esta misma línea de ideas, la demencia tipo Alzheimer es progresiva y tiene diferentes etapas, las cuales van desde un estadio uno y dos, de disfunción muy leve e imperceptible para el paciente y los demás, hasta un estadio seis y siete, de dificultad muy severa, donde el paciente pierde el lenguaje, solo recuerda su nombre, no tiene habilidad para comer, bañarse, reír y pierde el contacto con la realidad.

Instructions Cut tips from 12 asparagus, 1 1/2 inches from top and halve tips lengthwise if thick. Cut stalks and all remaining asparagus into 1/2-inch pieces. Cook onion in 2 tablespoons butter in a 4-quart heavy pot over moderately low heat, stirring, until softened. Add asparagus pieces and salt and pepper to taste, then cook, stirring, 5 minutes. Add 5 cups broth and simmer, covered, until asparagus is very tender, 15 to 20 mins.

While soup simmers, cook reserved asparagus tips in boiling salted water until just tender, 3 to 4 minutes, then drain.

Purée soup in batches in a blender until smooth, transferring to a bowl (use caution when blending hot liquids), and return to pan. Stir in crème fraîche, then add more broth to thin soup to desired consistency. Season with salt and pepper. Bring soup to a boil and whisk in remaining tablespoon butter.

More than one in five Hispanic caregivers (23 percent) report caring for the sick Alzheimer's or dementia. Hispanics are the fastest growing community in the US. The number of affected elderly Hispanics is currently about 200,000 and could reach 1.3 million by 2050.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Alzheimer's disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States and the fifth in people aged 65 years and over Research has found that language and cultural barriers are a factor that determines that Hispanics rarely use formal health services, as well as inadequate diagnose translations and cultural biases can distort diagnoses. Food and Alzheimer's disease People with Alzheimer's disease suffer from memory loss and this causes hyperactivity, confusion scheduling, distractibility, difficulty chewing and swallowing and as a result they tend to not eat properly.

Some studies show that people who eat a lot of fish do not suffer from Alzheimer's disease. It is common for elderly people have problems of malnutrition and Alzheimer's patients are 50% more likely.

1 Feed them small portions of healthy foods often 2 Have them eat at the table in a quiet environment 3 Prepare the food on plates and use neutral utensils without distracting details 4 Serve one thing at a time so as not to confuse or distract 5 Prepare food that can be eaten with your hands 6 Avoid food with lumps, bones and straws 7 Drink enough water • The food should be varied and have a favorable taste respecting the likes of the patient • You should choose food that provides energy and nutrients • Cereals, pastas, salads, vegetables and fruits will provide the patient the necessary fiber to prevent constipation and are a source of vitamins • Preferably we use olive oil, soybean or sunflower oil as vegetable fat is healthier • Proteins like meat, fish, milk, cheese and eggs are important RECOMMENDED DAILY RATIONS:
