For the second consecutive year, Medline has been named to the Forbes “America’s Best Large Employers” list, this year moving to the 360 spot, up from 440 in 2021. The 2022 list was chosen based on survey results from more than 60,000 employees working for companies employing at least 1,000 people in the U.S. Employees were anonymously asked to rank their company based on working conditions, salary potential, company image and other attributes. Respondents also were asked to identify and recommend other companies within their industry. The 500 “Best Large Employers” were chosen from more than 3,500 companies under consideration.
Forbes America’s Best Employers for Women
Ranking 28th out of 400 companies recognized for “leading the way when it comes to trying to support women inside and outside their workforces”, Medline has been named to Forbes 2022 list of America’s Best Employers for Women.
“The Covid-19 pandemic has disproportionately affected women around the nation,” according to Forbes. The list was compiled based on independent survey results covering general topics such as “willingness to recommend,” as well as “topics relevant for women,” including parental leave, discrimination, representation of women and career equity.

Forbes Best Employers for New Grads
Medline has been named among Forbes 2022 “America’s Best Employers for New Grads,” ranking 80th of 300 U.S. companies, “most liked by new workforce entrants.” The list was compiled based on survey results of 20,000 Americans with fewer than 10 years professional experience, working for businesses with at least 1,000 employees.
“The list offers a glimpse of what newly minted graduates are prioritizing amid what’s been a historically hot job market,” according to Forbes. Respondents were asked to rate their employers on a variety of criteria, including safety of work environment, competitiveness of compensation, opportunities for advancement, effectiveness of diversity and inclusion efforts, and company image. The final list ranks the 300 employers that received the most recommendations.
Forbes Best Employers in Illinois
Medline earned the 32nd spot among 100 selected Illinois employers in the fourth annual Forbes list of America’s Best Employers by State. Employers in 50 states and the District of Columbia are ranked by surveying 70,000 Americans working for businesses with at least 500 employees. The anonymous ratings are then compiled to rank up to 101 employers in each state, depending on the size of its workforce.
Employers making the list universally value fair pay, safe working conditions and an inclusive work culture. This year the survey questions also addressed remote work benefits, the wage gap for women, and initiatives around diversity, equity and inclusion.

A golden era of innovation in wound care is approaching
Technology and improved practices are merging to create successful, new strategies for preventing and treating chronic wounds. The earliest wound care practitioners used everything from honey and grease to alcohol to promote healing, a true example of necessity bearing invention. Innovation in engineering, chemistry and medicine have led to the advanced products used today and there’s no limit to how wound care might continue to evolve, especially with new technologies in the mix.

How ESG fortifies the supply chain
There’s a relationship between supply chain transformation and the broader push for health systems to understand and follow ESG principles. Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, consumers, communities,
employees and the federal government have raised their expectations for healthcare organizations to adopt and invest in socially responsible principles and values.

Tracking the factors that affect healing
Wound healing in 2022 is as complex and complicated as ever. Managing and treating wounds correctly to ensure proper recovery continues to plague both patient and physician. There are endless factors that go into healing a wound, and so much of it derives from the many unique particulars of that patient.
Medline steps in to help flood devastation
Medline has sent 350 cases of medical supplies to Eastern Kentucky to help treat and care for residents from the nine counties impacted by recent catastrophic floods. The supplies included medical triage boxes, bandages, personal protective equipment (PPE), gloves, hand sanitizer and other infection prevention products. All were transported from Medline distribution centers in Jeffersonville, Indiana and throughout the U.S. to SOS International, a Louisvillebased nonprofit organization coordinating assistance in the area.
Managing supply chain crises calls for elementary equation
Post-pandemic, the healthcare industry seeks to reshape the handling of future supply chain crises. The building blocks of any supply chain, regardless of industry, centers on three parts of an equation: people, processes and technology. To minimize future impact on supply chain operations, the question is how to order the three elements for best results.

Our evolving journey into
Medline’s broader focus to meet evolving customer and regulatory requirements
CCompanies are embracing a broader view of what it means to be a good corporate citizen. They’re recognizing the responsibilities and benefits of addressing the environment, social equity and good governance. A commitment to these priorities is good business, and increasingly, a requirement for operating in the U.S. and throughout the world.
More than 10 years ago, Medline created a sustainability initiative that has since evolved into a comprehensive Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program with additional focus on global health equity and local community impact. “The work we’ve done to be a positive social and environmental steward has had a tangible impact on the health systems we partner with and the communities we serve,” said Francesca Olivier, vice president of Medline Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG).
With regulatory standards and customer expectations evolving, Medline has moved from a CSR to an ESG model, establishing “a broader, global and data-driven approach to measure our non-financial performance,” said Olivier.
Customers today routinely seek information and metrics on environmental sustainability, diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), and ethical sourcing—ensuring that our products are made responsibly and respecting
WINTER 2023 9 Environmental, Social & Governance ESG
human rights throughout our supply chain. At the same time, lenders, investors and countries around the world are increasingly requiring ESG data disclosure, often relying on public, third-party ESG scores based on metrics.
“ESG, in a sense, is mandatory for the company to undertake. Regulatory compliance and customer expectations are driving us to do these things—we need to satisfy both,” said Alex Liberman, Medline General Counsel, who oversees the ESG effort. “We take a lot of pride in making Medline net positive in the world. Everyone involved is very sincere and energized about this undertaking.”
What makes ESG different?
While a traditional CSR program aims to make a company accountable for its larger societal responsibilities by focusing on a few key areas, an ESG program takes the CSR agenda further, fully integrating environmental and social responsibility into existing corporate strategy, paired with a strong governance framework. An ESG model also requires quantifiable targets and measurable impact assessments.
The Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) has outlined five dimensions within ESG:
• The environment. This includes emissions, air quality, energy management, water and wastewater management, waste and hazardous material management, and ecological impact.
• Social capital. Human rights, community relations, customer privacy, data security, affordability, product quality and safety, customer welfare, and selling practices and labeling.
• Human capital. Employee health and safety, and employee engagement, diversity and inclusion.
• Business model and innovation. Product design and lifecycle, business model resilience, supply chain management, materials sourcing and efficiency, and the physical impacts of climate change.
• Leadership & governance. Business ethics, competitive behavior, management of the legal and regulatory environment, critical incident risk management, and systemic risk management.
“Medline’s ESG program will include a new level of transparency and disclosure, requiring coordination across all regions and divisions, a greater commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion throughout our ranks, stronger due diligence around ethical sourcing throughout our supply chain, and a deepened commitment to good governance,” said Olivier.
“By embracing ESG now, we’re positioning Medline to succeed in the future,” said Evelyn Miller, Medline senior manager, ESG. “Beyond the importance of transparency and the need to satisfy regulatory and disclosure requirements, I can’t emphasize enough the link between ESG and positive business performance. Reducing operating expenditures and risk, improving resiliency, helping to attract and retain top talent, improving agility, enhancing brand image and driving revenue growth are all benefits of ESG programming and commitments.”
Determining customer needs
To gauge customer ESG interests and priorities, Medline conducted a
comprehensive assessment in partnership with Practice Greenhealth, the leading sustainable healthcare member organization in the U.S. Decision makers at 46 health systems were surveyed on the extent to which ESG is incorporated into healthcare purchasing decisions. Recent requests for information also were reviewed to assess the number and nature of ESG-related requests.
According to the survey, 46% of customers said that supplier responses to ESG topics impact vendor selection and 62% said they incorporate supplier ESG responses into scoring criteria. In addition:
• 50% of customers have goals for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, eco-friendly products, waste, DEI, supplier diversity and product safety.
• Up to 50% of customers have goals for eco-friendly programs, eco-friendly packaging, water use, community engagement, ethical sourcing and supply chain resiliency.
• The top five ESG topics in supplier questions are: supplier diversity (63%), product safety (56%), environmentallyfriendly products (50%), diversity, equity and inclusion (47%), and supply chain resiliency (48%).
• The top five ESG topics that health systems look for in their suppliers are: environmentally-friendly products (65%), supplier diversity (65%), environmentally-friendly programs (55%), product packaging (55%), and product safety (55%).
Customer inquiries about ESG topics at Medline vary by geography, said Miller. “In the U.S., environmental sustainability, diversity, equity and inclusion, and supplier diversity are top priorities. In Europe, ethical sourcing is

more of a focus, while supplier diversity is hardly considered a concept.”
The path forward
Based on a comprehensive stakeholder analysis of ESG priorities and other benchmarking, Medline has developed an ESG strategy and internal infrastructure to guide future endeavors.
The strategy will include 17 focal areas across four pillars:
• Climate resilience and environmental action: GHG emissions, air emissions, waste management, and water & wastewater
• Responsible products: Sustainable products and packaging, product safety, product labeling and marketing
• People and communities: diversity, equity and inclusion, supplier diversity, access and affordability, community engagement, employee engagement, and employee health and safety
• Robust governance: responsible sourcing, business ethics, cybersecurity, climate-related risk
Each pillar is overseen by working groups charged to lead the alignment of ESG priorities with core business strategy and develop goals and key performance indicators (KPIs). The groups will also establish baselines for data mapping and develop implementation plans. Medline is currently prioritizing. diversity, equity and inclusion, ethical sourcing, GHG emissions, supplier diversity, and sustainable products and packaging.
The plan is to address immediate ESG drivers, while simultaneously launching the infrastructure to realize
and sustain long-term performance, including data creation.
Evolving with us
“Over time, ESG priorities and principles will become more visible and embedded within the company culture and dayto-day operations,” said Liberman.
“What we’re doing will result, over time, in some financially positive operational changes,” Liberman continued. “The ESG drivers compel us to evolve more rapidly in some areas where we were already evolving, and to apply greater expertise in other areas. In addition, a big part of ESG is doing right by our employees. This will include enhancing DEI and employee engagement across divisions.”
Finally, because ESG ratings are public, “more and more customers, the media, and NGOs (non-governmental, nonprofit organizations) will look at us and assess who we are. We want to grade well in their eyes also. The changes to the organization will be impactful, but we’ll be incremental and intentional about how we go about this.” ■

This means there are more opportunities than ever for employees to support ESG at Medline. Here are a few ways you can get involved.
Medline Service Corps
The Medline Service Corps is a group of employees committed to volunteering in their communities and passionate about positive social and environmental impact. Recent Service Corps projects have included harvesting and donating produce grown on site at Medline’s corporate headquarters to a local food bank, back-to-school supply collections, participation in local mentoring and tutoring programs, and packing meals for children experiencing malnutrition.

We believe tapping into the richness of our employees’ diversity allows us to develop innovative solutions for our customers, who themselves represent a diverse group in the U.S. and around the world.
Greater diversity is also connected to stronger business results. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Team
Our growing Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) team focuses on the strategic development of goals, initiatives, policies and programs that ensure diversity, equity and inclusion are incorporated into everything we do at Medline.
Mission: To enhance our work culture to make Medline the employer of choice for top talent.
The DEI team has identified priorities within strategic focus areas including culture, hire, engage and retain top talent, inclusive leadership and business enhancement. The Self-ID program is voluntary and optional, and the data shared will only be available in aggregate form.
This is an important step in enhancing our inclusive environment by better understanding our workforce. The aggregate information will help shape employee policies, programs and initiatives by:
• providing insights about our employee demographics
• helping the company implement policies that attract, grow and support our diverse workforce
• enabling us to measure our progress within diverse communities
All U.S.-based Medline employees can choose to make changes to their profiles by visiting the MyMedline portal on the Source, or speaking with their HRBP. Changes can be made at any time. If an employee changes their mind and no longer wants to self-identify, they may go back in and delete any info previously submitted. We invite you to self-identify to the extent that you are comfortable— whether that is sharing some or all aspects of your identity that make you unique.

ERG’s are voluntary, employee-led groups that foster a diverse, inclusive workplace aligned with our mission, values, and goals. ERGs can enhance the company’s recruitment, retention, development and engagement by building community and a sense of belonging. belonging. They also offer employees a dedicated space to build stronger connections and get involved in cultural, educational, and outreach activities that support their professional development.

Manufacturing Building for the Future
Excelsior Medical
As part of Medline’s Vascular Access division, Excelsior Medical manufactures a variety of vascular access products including prefilled saline and heparin catheter flush syringes and disinfectant caps. Excelsior currently operates out of manufacturing sites in Neptune, NJ and Hartland, WI.
To accommodate growing demand for these products, Excelsior is expanding operations with a new location in Tinton Falls, NJ and is adding capacity at our Hartland facility. The new 100,000 square foot Tinton Falls facility will house one syringe manufacturing line with the capacity to add another line. In Hartland, WI, the expansion plans include tripling the facility capacity with the addition of two automated syringe manufacturing lines. We are on track to support our future growth with the new lines at both locations expected to be up and running in Q2 2024.
In Alignment
Project Unify began in 2019, with the lofty goal of aligning technology systems and standardizing processes across our North America manufacturing sites to support
continued growth, including replacing existing software with SAP’s Manufacturing Solution. The multi-year endeavor will improve overall efficiency through reduced expedited shipments, minimized excess
inventory/scrapping, and better utilization of warehouse space, as well as providing greater visibility into quality and regulatory compliance. Implementation has been completed at six plants with

Medline ReNewal reprocesses nearly 5,000 different types of single-use devices—from tourniquets to patient transfer mats—restoring them to their original quality and functionality. To support our continued growth in this market, a plant expansion has been underway at our Redmond, Oregon facility to add production lines for additional product categories. We look forward to increasing our capacity to support the growing needs of our customers.
This expansion project is a shining example of the strong team environment at Medline and ReNewal. Due to the specific nature of reprocessing, this expansion required our ReNewal Engineering team to not only lead the custom design and build elements of the expansion, but also ensure the new spaces could be utilized quickly. INTRO TO Medline University
FFor some health systems, the time and resources to plan for quality continuing education (CE) or onboarding programs is simply beyond their budgetary scope. When a facility doesn’t have programs in place, clinicians may be on their own to meet ongoing requirements or contact hours.
“Time and again, reps were hearing from accounts facing challenges onboarding and training new staff, as well as supporting the continuing education needs of staff clinicians,” said Geoff Kass, Director of Medline University. “More than anything, the creation of Medline University was the result of recognizing a need in the marketplace. It just so happened to coincide with the growing popularity of online education.”
Founded in 2008, Medline University is a free online resource for healthcare professionals. From onboarding new hires to helping meet annual training requirements, Medline University offers hundreds of free courses—more than half qualifying for CE credits. They’re also recognized by leading organizations including the California and Florida boards of Nursing.
Most Medline University courses are created in-house. Once course topics are chosen the team begins researching, creating scripts and producing the courses. They partner with divisions and departments throughout Medline to develop courses that address the most pressing issues course audience’s face.
In addition to meeting rigorous standards, Kass says learner experience and information retention is always top of mind.
“Our goal is to find ways to present information that is engaging and interactive so it brings lasting value to the learner and the facility.”
Medline University recently launched new offerings on workplace civility, expanded diversity and inclusion, and communications. The team is also developing micro-learning courses— 10-minute, mobile-optimized experiences for those seeking quick refreshers vs. deeper dives.
“Medline University is another way we differentiate ourselves from a traditional manufacturer,” said Kass. “Customers see
