2025 MBOT AWARDS

Starting 24 June 2025 from Toronto
Expect extraordinary comfort, however you choose to fly.
The world’s only three-room suite in the sky features a living room, bedroom and ensuite shower. It’s simply unlike anything else.
Settle into your own private apartment and sleep soundly on a fully flat bed, complete with luxury bedding and loungewear.
Summer is a season of growth—but in 2025, it is more than that. For business leaders in Mississauga and across Ontario, this summer represents a turning point. After years of political change and global uncertainty, we are finally entering a more stable period. Governments at all levels have settled into their mandates, and with that comes something businesses deeply value: predictability.
That does not mean the pace of change is slowing down. Far from it. Business owners continue to face a rapidly evolving landscape—new regulations, shifting supply chains, and emerging technologies are just a few of the forces at play. But with a more stable policy environment, we are better equipped to anticipate and respond to these challenges.
This moment offers a rare window of opportunity. We can expect earlier notice of policy shifts, new government programs, and regulatory updates— all of which make planning easier and engagement with policymakers more meaningful. This is where organizations like the Mississauga Board of Trade (MBOT) play a vital role. We take policy and turn it into action. We keep our members informed, connected, and ready to compete.
No business thrives in isolation. The strength of Mississauga’s economy lies in its interconnected business community. Leaders here understand the value of sharing knowledge, mentoring one another, and working together to grow.
Through MBOT’s roundtables, events, and peer networks, we give businesses the tools they need to adapt, innovate, and move forward with confidence. These are not just opportunities to stay informed—they are opportunities to lead.
As we enter this promising season, we encourage business owners to pause and reflect:
What do you want your business to stand for?
What kind of leader do you want to be?
Which technologies, markets, or partnerships are worth exploring now?
With fewer distractions, this is a time to make bold moves and set a clear course for the future.
This year also brought a proud moment for MBOT and the wider business community. On May 8, 2025, Trevor McPherson, our President & CEO, was awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal by Ontario’s Associate Minister of Small Business and MPP for Mississauga—Streetsville, the Honourable Nina Tangri.
This prestigious medal recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to Canada and their local communities. Only 30,000 Canadians are selected for this honour. Trevor’s

leadership and advocacy for businesses in Mississauga and across Ontario have made a lasting impact, and we are incredibly proud to see his work recognized at the national level.
While challenges still exist—economic fluctuations, global pressures, workforce transitions—we are better prepared than we have been in years. The question now is not whether we will face change, but how we will lead through it.
At the Mississauga Board of Trade, we are committed to helping businesses do just that. We are your advocate, your connector, and your partner in progress.
Now is the time to take action. Whether you are a business owner, executive, entrepreneur, or emerging leader, we invite you to connect with MBOT. Join a committee, attend an upcoming event, or explore the benefits of membership.
Visit www.mbot.com to learn more about how we can support your growth and success—today and into the future.
Together, let’s build a stronger Mississauga.

With renewed momentum in Mississauga and beyond, businesses are looking to Ottawa for clear direction and bold action. With a new federal government in place led by a new Prime Minister, now is the time to reset priorities and lay the groundwork for a more competitive and productive Canada. And the business community - especially here in Mississauga, Ontario’s secondlargest economy - is ready to do its part.
The Canadian Chamber of Commerce and Ontario Chamber of Commerce have put forward a compelling set of policy recommendations that should guide the federal government’s early actions.
These priorities align closely with the realities and aspirations of Mississauga’s diverse economic sectors—from advanced manufacturing, smart logistics and life sciences to food processing, goods movement and fintech.
Canada continues to be hamstrung by internal trade barriers that restrict the free flow of goods, services, and labour across provincial borders. In a country as vast as ours, that is not just inefficient—it is costly. Mississauga’s thriving transportation and logistics sector, a national hub due to our proximity to Pearson Airport and key highways, suffers when supply chains are delayed by inconsistent provincial
regulations. Removing these barriers, as recommended by both Chambers, would immediately improve competitiveness and unlock billions in economic potential. The Province of Ontario’s recent progress in this area in signing agreements with several provinces and introducing legislation (Protect Ontario Through Free Trade Within Canada Act) in an encouraging first step. It is also encouraging that Canada now has a Cabinet Minister responsible for this important file.
Canada’s productivity levels continue to lag our international peers, threatening long-term prosperity. One way to reverse this trend is to reduce red tape and modernize our tax and regulatory frameworks. For instance, the federal government should make permanent the Accelerated Investment Incentive, which allows businesses to
fully deduct investments in equipment— critical for manufacturers in Mississauga. It should also reform outdated tax rules and sunset the proposed Digital Services Tax, which increases costs for consumers and businesses alike and
action to address the current housing shortage.
At the same time, government must encourage business-led innovation. Expanding the SR&ED tax credit and pharmaceuticals that need to move swiftly across the country or expanding broadband to support remote work and AI development, infrastructure matters.
Toronto Pearson is more than just an airport—it’s the heartbeat of Canada’s economy. As the anchor of the Pearson Economic Zone, it connects local businesses to global markets, fueling 500,000+ jobs, driving $70.6 billion annually in Ontario, and helping Canada compete in an increasingly competitive and uncertain world economy.
North America's largest manufacturing hub - 92,500+ jobs in 2,100+ firms
170,000+ professionals in knowledge-based and creative industries
Ontario's construction epicenter - 45,000+ employees in 1,700+ firms
Home to 500,000+ workers - or 1 in 7 GTA jobs
Location of choice for 18,000+ businesses - or 1 in 10 Ontario businesses
54.5% of Ontario's transportation and warehousing sector GDP
The Pearson Economic Zone is critical to the Canadian economy and its global competitiveness. Toronto Pearson - it's not just an airport - it’s a powerhouse for jobs, trade, and growth.
Critical minerals, energy, supply chains, trade and security topped the agenda as the Canadian Chamber of Commerce hosted the B7 Summit in Ottawa in May.
Political leaders in attendance were former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and Minister of Industry Melanie Joly. Business leaders included the heads of all national chambers of commerce in the B7: Germany, France, United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, U.S. and Canada.
Many views were expressed on how G7 countries can manage the treacherous waters in which the world economy finds itself. Subsequent to the discussions, several key points emerged that should serve as the basis for chamber advocacy in the coming months and years. They are as follows:
Critical minerals
G7 countries need increased access to critical minerals
Critical minerals are vital for the G7’s economic security and achieving net zero
To bring Canada’s critical minerals to market, Canadian businesses need increased access to capital and reduced regulations
Energy
• Affordable and reliable energy is vital to Canada’s economy and our sovereignty
• Canada is a reliable and trusted supplier of energy to other G7 countries
• In order for Canada to continue to be a reliable and trusted supplier of energy to the world, we need better east-west and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) infrastructure
Artificial Intelligence (AI)
• AI has enormous economic potential; it also enhances our security
• AI adoption is low in G7 countries because of a lack of knowledge of AI as a tool
• AI also needs to be developed within a consistent and stable regulatory framework
Infrastructure
• G7 countries need to continue building infrastructure of all kinds including transportation, energy, digital and health – the building of this infrastructure will enhance opportunities for business and increase economic output
• In Canada, infrastructure building, especially in relation to transportation and energy, has been limited by the slow pace of both approvals and construction
Supply Chains
Supply chain disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic have been followed by supply chain disruptions as a result of the Russia-Ukraine War and trade disputes
• Over-reliance on players such as Russia and China have created challenges in G7 countries
Health Security
• Economic success and stability cannot occur without healthy populations
• Increased innovation in health care is needed
Many MBOT members are engaged in efforts to address climate change – and the City of Mississauga is actively involved as well.
In 2023, the City of Mississauga began consulting with the public regarding its Climate Change Action Plan (CCAP). Since then, the City has engaged in benchmarking, data collection and scenario development.
Consultations are continuing through spring and summer, 2025 and MBOT members are encouraged to get involved.

The last few years have been transformative for the food and beverage industry. Shifting consumer expectations, supply chain volatility, and labour challenges have reshaped how many operate. For food manufacturers in Ontario and beyond, the landscape has demanded more than adaptation. It calls for a reset in how we lead, produce, and connect.
Through this period, several key trends have stood out.
First, consumers are demanding more transparency and integrity.
Interest in clean-label, vegetarian, and ethically made products isn’t a niche. It’s the norm. We’ve seen how staying committed to product authenticity, even when it’s difficult, helps build long-term trust.
Second, operational resilience matters more than ever.
Whether dealing with supply shortages, rising costs in dairy or packaging, or complex retail logistics, businesses need strong systems to weather uncertainty. For us, improving inventory visibility, investing in cold chain capacity, and simplifying processes helped create more stability and better service.
Third, cultural relevance continues to grow in importance.
Food today is about more than flavour. It’s about identity, nostalgia, and connection. When done with care, products that reflect diverse traditions can resonate broadly. The takeaway: listen deeply to your customer base and stay true to the roots of what you offer.
Finally, people are at the center of sustainable growth.
Workforce expectations have changed post-COVID. Companies that support internal leadership, prioritize clarity, and nurture culture are more likely to retain talent and deliver consistent performance. A strong, purpose-driven team is one of any organization’s best assets.
None of these lessons is exclusive to one company. They apply broadly across our sector. What’s worked is not just reacting to change, but approaching it with intention: protecting what matters, while staying agile enough to evolve.
As the industry continues to shift, businesses that stay grounded in their mission and are willing to invest in their people, products, and processes are best positioned for long-term impact.
In the end, food is more than business. It’s about connection, community, and care
ALEX LACHINE MBA, President alachine@teamlogicit.ca TeamLogic IT
Business as usual is no more. The traditional workplace has been transitioning for more than 30 years, with the advent of computers and a host of other innovations changing the way people work and what they do each day. Automation allows organizations to streamline their workflow, eliminate mundane tasks and reduce manual labour. What was a slow shift to remote work accelerated with the pandemic and heightened the need for work-from-home (WFH) initiatives, cybersecurity awareness and defense, unified communications and cloud computing.
According to Global Workplace Analytics, businesses can save more than $11,000 per employee per year in real estate and utility costs, absenteeism, turnover and productivity by adopting WFH policies (Global Workplace Analytics, https://globalworkplaceanalytics.com).
In areas where commercial property and living expenses are high, those savings could be substantially higher. Employees gain back part of their lives and pay no gas or parking expenses.
There is no reason for businesses to wait for another pandemic to prepare for the next new normal. With a host of available technologies, including cloud services, mobility solutions, cybersecurity measures, remote monitoring and management, and productivity tools, as well as co-managed IT options, it is easier than ever to revolutionize the workplace for any size company.
When intelligently designed and professionally implemented, the new norm can be a significant business enhancer. Several other factors support the movement toward flexible workplaces. First, small business organizations can exponentially grow their pool of potential employees by recruiting in distant geographic regions. Rather than compete with enterprise organizations for quality talent, especially With all the unknowns that businesses face today, from the global pandemic and natural disasters to increasing government regulations, the value of IT systems and support has never been higher.
In the GTA and larger metropolitan areas, smaller businesses can cast a wider net for similarly, if not more highly, gifted employees. Remote work options help companies attract those highly skilled professionals who may not want to leave family and friends or prefer not to relocate due to financial hardships or other quality-
of-life choices. Casting a wider geographic net also allows companies to attract a more diverse workforce. Bringing in people with different backgrounds and customs can spur new ideas and encourage strategic planning.
Economically challenged cities and rural areas are great recruiting areas for companies with job openings where remote work is an option. Of course, applicants must meet specific criteria to qualify, including a work location with minimum internet speeds and other lines of communication.
Employee satisfaction is another opportunity in the new norm. A recent survey found that 77% of respondents appreciate the flexibility of working at home, with 69% indicating satisfaction with their well-being in a WFH situation (Global Workplace Analytics’ Global Work-fromHome Experience Survey https://globalworkplaceanalytics. com/globalwork-from-home-experience-survey).
The latest generation of communications platforms includes voice, video and text. Email remains the business standard, and many of the new options can leverage those systems to deliver messages in multiple formats, including hosted VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol). Whether employees work from home, in a corporate office or flexible workspace, or from the road, these technologies allow them to talk, share information and collaborate seamlessly.
Some organizations may need to upgrade their infrastructure to attain those capabilities. For systems to operate at peak performance levels, with secure connections to the cloud and other platforms, reliable networks are a must. Qualified personnel should evaluate internet speeds, bandwidth and basic security precautions, and additional protection measures should be put in place before remote teams can access any systems behind the corporate firewall.
Companies that steadily invest in new Information Technologies and consistently reevaluate their employee work environments typically reap higher profits and experience less turnover than less proactive competitors. Those costs of improvements are offset by the benefits, including greater efficiency, higher customer and employee satisfaction, and lower expenses.
The best option for small businesses is to contract with a reputable managed services provider (MSP) who has the expertise and tools in order to manage and protect their IT resources virtually anywhere. Remote work environments require constant attention and your MSP should be able to react quickly but also be proactive, helping them avoid problems in the first place. Without monitoring, management and ticketing systems in place, and skilled IT professionals available to assist, it is all too easy to overlook potential cybersecurity threats or systems issues.

Also beginning June 9, 2025 the U.S. imposes restrictions on Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela, limiting access to certain visa categories due to high-risk profiles and visa overstay rates.
Both Canada and the United States are implementing significant changes to their immigration policies and programs. Here’s what you need to know right now:
Travel Ban
countries takes effect June 9, 2025
Full Travel Bans on 12 Countries
Effective June 9, 2025 entry to the is fully restricted for nationals from: Afghanistan, Myanmar (Burma), Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen. The White House cites inadequate passport and vetting systems and national security risks as justification.
Exemptions are in place for current lawful permanent residents of the United States (Green Card holders), existing visa holders (those who have a valid visa as of June 9, 2025), diplomats, certain athletes (those participating in the World Cup and the Olympics), and individuals whose entry aligns with U.S. national interests. There is an exemption for dual nationals of any designated country when the individual is traveling on a passport issued by a country that is not subject to the travel ban.
Canadian citizens with dual nationality of a country that is listed should not be impacted by the travel ban if they are traveling on Canadian passports. Permanent Residents of Canada who travel on their national passport of a designated country should expect to be impacted by the travel ban.
This travel ban expands beyond the list of countries included in the 2017 ban. It features more targeted restrictions, leaving visa-holders already in the U.S. or with valid visas are unaffected, and with the administration pledging periodic reviews.
Bill C-3 proposes significant reforms to Canada’s Citizenship Act, to address the limitations of the first-generation rule—which currently restricts the ability of Canadians born abroad to pass citizenship to their own children born outside Canada. This rule has been found unconstitutional by the Ontario Superior Court.
Bill C-3 proposes to:
• Automatically restore or grant citizenship to individuals who would have been citizens if not for the first-generation limit or outdated past laws.
• Establish a new framework for citizenship by descent beyond the first generation. Under this, a Canadian parent born abroad could pass citizenship to a child born or adopted abroad if they can demonstrate a substantial connection to Canada—defined as at least 1,095 days (3 years) of physical presence in Canada prior to the child’s birth or adoption. Restore citizenship to additional categories of “Lost Canadians” and their descendants who were excluded by earlier reforms in 2009 and 2015.
An interim measure remains in place for those currently affected, while Parliament considers the bill.
Babel Immigration Law is a boutique corporate immigration law
firm serving small and medium sized business in Canada and the U.S. We provide smart, strategic advice for our clients who want to live, work, study and do business on both sides of the border.
Strong Borders Act – Stricter Immigration Controls and Asylum Reforms
This Bill introduces stricter eligibility for asylum claims in Canada. If this bill becomes law in its current form, individuals who have resided in Canada for over one year or who entered irregularly (e.g., via unauthorized border crossings) will be ineligible to file a claim for asylum. These applicants would instead undergo a pre-removal risk assessment, which has a historically lower acceptance rate.
Expanded IRCC Enforcement Powers: Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) would gain the authority to pause or cancel intake of new applications, as well as suspend, or revoke existing immigration documents and applications en masse, under circumstances defined as in the public interest (e.g., national or public health concerns)
Enhanced Data Sharing: The Act permits IRCC to share client information—
including status, document data, and identity—with federal, provincial, and territorial partners, and to cross-utilize data across immigration streams.
The reforms aim to streamline the asylum process, making it more efficient and reducing backlogs by clarifying procedures for when claims are abandoned or withdrawn.
an end to the Quebec Experience Program (PEQ) and Consultations on proposed immigration plan for 20262029
The Government of Québec has launched public consultations on its proposed immigration plan for 2026 to 2029. Québec is proposing specific targets for temporary immigration, including a 13% reduction in the number of temporary foreign workers and international students by 2029 compared to 2024. For
permanent immigration, three possible scenarios are under consideration, each involving a decrease from recent averages: a 50% reduction to 25,000 newcomers annually, a 30% cut to 35,000, or a 10% decrease to 45,000. The government intends to prioritize French-speaking immigrants already living in Québec who meet labour market demands.
Québec also is implementing immediate measures. A new skilled worker selection program (PSTQ) will begin issuing invitations in July 2025, focusing on candidates already in Québec with French proficiency, and skills that address labour shortages. Application intake under key streams of the Québec Experience Program (PEQ) is temporarily suspended until November 30, 2025, and the collective refugee sponsorship program will remain closed until December 31, 2027. Applications already submitted under suspended programs will continue to be processed, and adding dependents remains permitted.

OUR ANNUAL IMPACT
20,000+ residents engaged across Peel Region
13,000+ pounds of food grown
21,000+ volunteer hours contributed
One powerful way to extend sustainability commitments beyond the workplace is by partnering with local environmental charities. These organizations can offer valuable employee education on environmental issues relevant to your business and organize team-building activities - like urban farming - that make a real difference in the community. These partnerships are a win-win: companies advance their sustainability and team development goals, while communities benefit from greener, healthier environments.
Climate change is no longer a distant threat - it’s a growing business reality. In Mississauga, we’re already seeing the impacts first-hand from seasonal flooding and property damage to winter storms and disruptions in operations. These events don’t just impact your employees and infrastructure, they also drive up costs and strain local economies.
Forward-thinking companies can take meaningful steps today to build resilience and lead the shift toward a lowcarbon future. That might mean transitioning your fleet to zero-emission vehicles, reimagining your packaging with sustainable materials, improving energy efficiency across your operations, or adopting sustainable landscaping practices on your properties.
Since internal changes like this can take time, there are other ways to demonstrate your commitment to sustainability in the short-term. In fact, companies have a unique opportunity to deepen their sustainability efforts by engaging directly with the communities they serve. This hands-on involvement helps build a culture of purpose within the workplace while demonstrating a genuine commitment to environmental stewardship where it matters most.
Ecosource brings corporate teams together around their sustainability goals and supports companies to give back to their communities. We offer a unique opportunity to mobilize your corporate team through hands-on action for the environment at our urban farm or community hub in downtown Mississauga. Every year, we grow 13,000 lbs of fresh, healthy food across our garden network for donation to local food banks and to feed families with the support of corporate teams and community volunteers. By working together in this way, we help improve the health of our environment while addressing challenges like climate change and food security.

• Corporate Tax-Free Capital Dividends Reducing the Value of a Corporation
• Cascading Assets to the Next Generation Estate Equalization & Estate Freezes

Let’s talk about Philanthropy and the regular Business Owner or Incorporated Professional. Most of us want to give back to causes that we hold dear. All donations are usually linked to an incident…it’s time to change that. In comes “Strategic Planned Giving”… and here’s why...
• Did you know with Planned Giving …the Donor (You) Win, the Charity Wins and Your Family Wins!
• Did you know that Canadians donate over $14 Bn annually to different Charities.
• Did you know the most inefficient way to donate is “CASH”
Why Donate: We, Canadians, are a generous lot. Everyone has their own reason to donate, however, we have found that there are a few key reasons why People Give …
1. To do good for Society & Give back
2. To build a Legacy or remain Anonymous
3. To be an Example in Social Capital
4. It’s Good for Business
5. Has distinct Tax advantages
Donors can look at Donating from a wide range of options like Cash, Public & Private Securities, Flow through Shares, Stock Options, RRSP’s/RRIF’s, Life Insurance, Annuities, Charitable Remainder Trusts, Gifts & Bequests in a Will, Canadian Cultural Property, Personal Use Property, Listed Personal Property, Environmental Property, Real Estate etc.,

This year marks the 7th edition of the RPA Women Entrepreneur Awards—a powerful milestone and a reflection of RPA Canada’s deep-rooted commitment to community involvement and the advancement of women in business.
We founded this initiative in 2019 with a clear vision: to recognize and uplift the women who are innovating, persevering, and transforming the entrepreneurial landscape in Canada and beyond. It was never just about accolades. It was, and continues to be, about empowering women through entrepreneurship—by giving visibility to their work, encouraging economic independence, and enabling longterm impact in their communities.
At The Society of Professional Accountants of Canada, we recognize that small businesses are the foundation of our national economy, and women entrepreneurs are its fastestgrowing force. Yet despite this progress, we remain acutely aware of the systemic challenges women often face— barriers to funding, mentorship gaps, and inequities that make their path harder than it should be.
That’s why RPA Canada has made women empowerment through entrepreneurship a cornerstone of our community involvement. Our philosophy is to reduce women’s dependency on systems that may not fully serve them, by encouraging, supporting, and assisting them to become successful contributors to both society and the economy. We believe that when a woman is supported to build her business, she builds more than a company—she builds a future for herself, her family, and her community.
ZUBAIR CHOUDHRY President & CEO RPA Canada
Through the RPA Women Entrepreneur Awards, we are creating a platform to showcase resilience, encourage leadership, and share the success stories that will inspire the next generation of women to dream bigger and act bolder. These awards are more than a celebration—they are a movement for equity, courage, and economic transformation.
We are excited to host our Gala Celebration on Saturday, October 25, 2025, and pleased to announce that nominations are now open at www.rpacanada.org. Whether you are nominating a colleague, a client, a friend—or yourself—your story could be the spark that empowers another woman to step into her full potential.

A bold new initiative is gaining momentum across Ontario, bringing education and industry together in a fresh and meaningful way. The Ontario Career Lab, backed by the Government of Ontario and delivered by the non-profit HIEC, is reshaping how students explore their futures by connecting them with real people who are living out careers in every corner of the economy.
Launched in classrooms across the province, the Ontario Career Lab introduces students in Grades 9 and 10 to what’s possible through small-group “Career Conversations.” These sessions invite volunteers from all industries and occupations to share their personal career stories—how they got started, what they’ve learned, and what a day on the job really looks like.
“Ourstudentsneedtobereadytotakeonthejobsoftomorrow, and that means making sure they get the right support today,” said Paul Calandra, Minister of Education. “Our government has been focused on ensuring that students, parents, and teachers get the resources they need to prepare students for success. It’s about working together – the province, teachers, and employers – to make sure every student has a clear path to a good-paying, stable career in Ontario.”
Rather than one-size-fits-all advice, Career Lab conversations are real, relatable, and often eye-opening. In a world where nearly half of students feel unprepared for life after high school, these moments of connection can make all the difference.
And the impact? It’s already being felt across the province. Students consistently report that these conversations help them think more clearly about their futures, introduce them to careers they’d never considered, and boost their confidence in making decisions. Behind the scenes,
thousands of community members have stepped up to share their experiences, fueling over 130,000 hours of career exploration.
Kelly Hoey, Executive Director of HIEC, believes this is just the beginning. “Ontario’s schools do amazing work, but they can’t do it alone. When someone takes the time to share their story with a student, it can be a turning point—one that helps them see what’s possible and start building toward it.”
The Ontario Career Lab is calling on people from all walks of life to get involved. Whether you’re early in your journey or well down the road, your career journey could be precisely what a student needs to hear.
