Evne til fremsyn og vilje til forandring er blandt de væsentligste årsager til Claire Groups vedvarende succes.

Den danske tekstilindustri har gennemgået enorme forandringer siden 1975. At skulle omstille sig til skiftende virkeligheder er blevet et grundvilkår i modebranchen.

Claire Group i Ikast er et bevis på, at det kan lade sig gøre at trives i den omskiftelige branche. Virksomheden har flere gange i sit 50 årige liv været blandt branchens pionerer - Claire Group var for eksempel blandt de første danske tøjvirksomheder, der flyttede sin produktion til Østen. Her satte Claire Group nye standarder og skabte ordentlige arbejdsforhold for medarbejderne på systuerne.

Den 1. april 2025 er det 50 år siden, Claire Group blev etableret med domicil på Marsvej 6-10 i Ikast. Det fejres ved en reception i virksomheden fredag den 4. april 2025 kl. 13.00 sammen med medarbejdere, samarbejdspartnere og venner af huset.

Ability to foresight and the willingness to change are among the most important reasons for Claire Group’s continued success.

The Danish textile industry has changed enormously since 1975. Having to adapt to new realities has become the new normal in the fashion business.

Claire Group in Ikast has proved that it is possible to thrive in a changing industry. The company has been among the industry’s pioneers several times during its 50-year history - for instance, Claire Group was among the first Danish clothing companies to move its production to the East. Here, Claire Group set new standards and created decent working conditions for employees in the sewing facilities.

On April 1, 2025, it will be 50 years since Claire Group was established with its headquarters at Marsvej 6-10 in Ikast. It will be celebrated at a reception at the company on Friday, April 4, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. together with employees, business partners and friends of the house.

INNOVATION OG CSR

“Det har alle dage været normen for os at producere tøj i en holdbar kvalitet.”

- Vi har været innovative gennem alle årene. Vi var blandt de første danske tekstilvirksomheder, som udviklede et CSR-program (Corporate Social Responsibility), og vi har været frontløbere, når det gælder den grønne omstilling. Det har alle dage været normen for os at producere tøj i en holdbar kvalitet, og den værdi har vi fastholdt. Vi inddrager miljøvenlige materialer i kollektionerne, for eksempel økologisk bomuld, Oeko-Tex 100-certificerede tekstiler, bambus, Lenzing Viscose og recycled polyester. I juni 2012 blev vi som Skandinaviens første beklædningsvirksomhed certificeret med den internationale etiske standard SA 8000, og vi går generelt meget op i at have en arbejdsplads, hvor medarbejderne kan lide at være, udtaler CEO Nikolaj Hust, 46 år. Han er stolt af den virksomhed, som hans far Anders Hust har etableret og udviklet, og han har selv været en del af Claire Group i 15 år.

- Da Claire Groups danske produktion toppede, havde vi omkring 700 syersker, tilskærere med videre tilknyttet. De arbejdede på over 10 forskellige lokationer i Midtjylland, og vi havde også masser af hjemmesyersker. Da vi rykkede produktionen til Kina, oprettede vi eget produktionskontor og ansatte et stort antal controllere for at sikre kvalitet og arbejdsforhold, fortæller Nikolaj Hust.

INNOVATION AND CSR

- We have been innovative throughout the years. We were among the first Danish textile companies to develop a CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) program, and we have been frontrunners when it comes to the green transition. It has always been the norm for us to produce clothes in a durable quality, and we have maintained that value. We include environmentally friendly materials in our collections, for example organic cotton, Oeko-Tex 100-certified textiles, bamboo, Lenzing Viscose and recycled polyester. In June 2012, we were the first clothing company in Scandinavia to be certified with the international ethical standard SA 8000, and we are generally very committed to creating a workplace where employees like to be, says CEO Nikolaj Hust, 46 years old. He is proud of the company that his father Anders Hust established and developed. Nikolaj Hust has been part of Claire Group for 15 years.

- When Claire Group’s Danish production peaked, we had around 700 people working with sewing, cutting, packing, etc. They worked at over 10 different locations in Central Denmark, and we also had lots of women sewing at home. When we moved our production to China, we set up our own production office and employed a large number of controllers to ensure quality and working conditions, says Nikolaj Hust.

Claire Group var også blandt frontløberne inden for eksport af dansk mode.

“Min fars fremsynethed og hans skarpe øje for nye forretningsmuligheder har udviklet virksomheden gennem årene.”

- Vi var tidligt ude over landets grænser. Da Berlinmuren faldt, åbnede der sig nye markedsmuligheder i Rusland og Østeuropa, og her blev Claire hurtigt et eftertragtet brand. I 90’erne begyndte de førende brands at etablere egne konceptbutikker, og det gjorde vi også. Vi gik ind i retail og havde på et tidspunkt over 50 butikker i blandt andet Polen og Rusland. Også på det nordiske marked etablerede vi vores egne konceptbutikker, og i dag har vi stadig 16 egne butikker i Norge. Den fremsynethed og det skarpe øje for forretningsmuligheder, min far har - kombineret med hans ekspertise inden for tal og økonomi - har udviklet virksomheden gennem årene. Han har også været villig til at tage risici. Jeg har kæmpe respekt for min fars evne til købmandskab, og han har altid lavet forretning på en ordentlig måde. Han har evnet at have udsyn og blik for nye muligheder uden at miste overblikket og sansen for detaljen. Det er et fantastisk positivt aftryk, min far har sat gennem tiden - og den store respekt, han har bygget op om virksomheden, møder jeg fortsat blandt kunder og leverandører, fastslår Nikolaj Hust.

FRONT RUNNER AND FAIRNESS

Claire Group was also among the pioneers regarding Danish clothing export.

- We were early on when it came to expanding sales beyond our home country’s borders. When the Berlin Wall fell, new market opportunities opened up in Russia and Eastern Europe, and Claire quickly became a sought-after brand here. In the 90s, leading brands began to establish their own concept stores, and so did we. We entered the retail business, and at one point had over 50 stores in Poland and Russia, among other places. We also established our own concept stores in the Nordic market, and today we still own 16 stores in Norway. My father’s foresight and keen eye for business opportunities - combined with his expertise in numbers and economics - have developed the company over the years. He has also been willing to take risks. I have great respect for my father’s business skills, and he has always done business in a proper way. He has had a clear vision and been open for new opportunities without losing neither his overview nor his eye for detail. It’s a huge and positive impression that my dad has left over time - and I continue to meet the immense respect he has built around Claire Group, when I see customers and suppliers, Nikolaj Hust states.

Nikolaj Hust blev ansat i familievirksomheden i 2010 som chef for marketing og innovation. Den tidligere professionelle fodboldspiller (for blandt andre Fortuna Düsseldorf, FC Midtjylland og Vejle Boldklub) havde snust til markedsføringsfaget gennem en ansættelse i reklamebureauet IB & co. Senere blev Nikolaj Hust også ansvarlig for de samlede salgsaktiviteter i familievirksomheden.

- Mit interesseområde er klart på det kreative og salgsstrategiske. Da vi introducerede børnetøjsbrandet Hust&Claire i 2012, fik jeg ansvaret for at drive den del af forretningen, og i 2017 blev jeg salgsdirektør for hele huset, herunder for Claire Woman. I april 2023 overtog jeg CEO-kasketten fra min far, der fortsatte med at have sin gang i huset som konsulent og sparringspartner, fortæller Nikolaj Hust, der tilføjer, at ejerskiftet blev påbegyndt som et rullende generationsskifte i 2017.

I 2021 blev Claire Group majoritetsejer i NoBRAKES ApS, der står bag mærkerne Woodbird og GRUNT.

- Jeg har valgt stort set at lade selskabet køre sit eget løb, da det bliver drevet med stor passion og dygtighed af co-founder og med-ejer Chung W. Cheung sammen med de to øvrige med-ejere Chris Jepsen og Claus Fisker, siger Nikolaj Hust.

FROM PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL TO TEXTILE BUSINESS

Nikolaj Hust joined the family business in 2010 as head of marketing and innovation. The former professional football player (for Fortuna Düsseldorf, FC Midtjylland and Vejle Boldklub, among others) became interested in marketing in connection with his employment at the advertising agency IB & co. Later, Nikolaj Hust became responsible for the overall sales activities in the family business.

- My greatest interest clearly lies within the creative and sales strategic areas. When we introduced the children’s clothing brand Hust&Claire in 2012, I was given responsibility for running that part of the business, and in 2017 I became sales director for the entire house, including Claire Woman. In April 2023, I took over the CEO position from my father, who continued in Claire Group as a consultant and sparring partner, says Nikolaj Hust, adding that the change of ownership began in 2017 as a gradual generational change.

In 2021, Claire Group became the majority owner of NoBRAKES ApS, which is behind the Woodbird and GRUNT brands.

- I have largely chosen to let the company run its own business, as it is led with great passion and skill by co-founder and co-owner Chung W. Cheung together with the two co-owners Chris Jepsen and Claus Fisker, says Nikolaj Hust.

Stifter, 72 årige Anders Hust, er glad for, at sønnen har villet påtage sig ansvaret for at føre livsværket videre.

- Det betyder alverden for mig, at Nikolaj fører stafetten videre. Der har naturligvis budt sig andre muligheder gennem årene, hvor jeg kunne have solgt virksomheden eller fusioneret med andre i branchen. Med den koncentration, der har fundet sted i modebranchen gennem årene, ville det have været en naturlig udvikling. Men jeg synes, at en familievirksomhed på egne hænder kan noget andet. Det har klart været min drøm, at næste generation skulle føre Claire Group videre - selvfølgelig under den forudsætning, at Nikolaj kunne se sig selv som ejer og CEO. Det store ansvar må ikke føles som et åg på skuldrene, og sådan har Nikolaj det heldigvis heller ikke. Når man står i spidsen for en selvstændig familievirksomhed, skal der kæmpes for at få tingene til at lykkes. Nikolaj har den nødvendige ambition og kampgejst, hvilket han også beviste som sportsmand. Vi var grundige i planlægningen af generationsskiftet, og nu er vi kommet godt i mål med det, siger Anders Hust, der tilføjer, at virksomheden har haft samme CVR-nummer siden etableringen.

- Claire Group har bestemt været igennem alvorlige bølgeskvulp; ingen virksomhed kommer igennem 50 år uden både op- og nedture. Hvert årti har budt på nye, store udfordringer og forandringer i modebranchen, men vi har evnet at tage flest rigtige beslutninger, og derfor står vi her endnu. En af de vigtige strategiske beslutninger, jeg traf, var da jeg lukkede ned for den store private label-produktion, vi havde, hvor vi leverede tøj til giganter som H&M, Lindex, Dansk Supermarked (nu Salling Group) osv. Vi sagde farvel til omkring halvdelen af omsætningen, men jeg kunne se, at vi blev mere og mere presset på pris for hver kollektion, vi leverede, og jeg bestemte derfor at fokusere på at gå dybere ind i Claire og gøre det til et endnu mere kendt og efterspurgt brand. Jeg kan tydeligt huske, hvordan jeg personligt rejste rundt til vores 34 storkunder og sagde til dem, at jeg ikke havde nogen kollektion med i dag, men egentlig bare kom for at sige tak for samarbejdet. Det var vildt, konstaterer Anders Hust.

Et andet uudsletteligt indtryk, Anders Hust fik, var da han første gang i 1976 - som ung mand først i 20’erne - rejste til Hongkong for at undersøge mulighederne for produktion i Østen.

- Her oplevede jeg de usigeligt kummerlige forhold, der var på fabrikkerne dengang. Jeg kunne ganske enkelt ikke leve med, at mennesker skulle arbejde for min virksomhed på de usle vilkår, og derfor gik jeg i partnerskab med udvalgte produktionssteder, hvor vi fik etableret respektable forhold for de ansatte. I 1981 fik vi vores første indkøbskontor med controllerfunktioner på ikke bare kvaliteten af varerne, men også kvaliteten af arbejdsforholdene. Her var vi pioner, og den retning og det fokus på arbejdsmiljø og menneskerettigheder, som blev etableret her, har vi fastholdt og videreudviklet gennem alle årene, siger Claire Groups stifter. I dag har koncernen både produktion i Østen og i Europa.

- Claire Group har en enorm stor kundeloyalitet, og jeg tror, den loyalitet hænger nøje sammen med, at vi altid har forsøgt at opføre os ordentligt. Jeg er 100 procent tryg ved, at Nikolaj kan føre arven videre, siger en stolt Anders Hust, der i øvrigt ikke kan se sig selv i et passivt seniorliv uden tilknytning til erhvervslivet. Efter, at Anders Hust forlod sin toppost i Claire Group, er han tiltrådt som CEO for Minimum A/S, som han ejer 75% af, mens Nikolaj Hust har resten af aktierne.

LIFE’S WORK CARRIED ON BY THE NEXT GENERATION

Founder, 72-year-old Anders Hust, is happy that his son had the wish to take on the responsibility of continuing his life’s work.

- It means the world to me that Nikolaj is carrying on the baton. Of course, other opportunities have arisen over the years, and I could have sold the company or merged it with other textile businesses. With the concentration that has taken place in the fashion industry over the years, it would have been a natural development. But I think that running a family business is unique. It has clearly been my dream that the next generation would lead Claire Group forward - of course, on the condition that Nikolaj could see himself as an owner and CEO. The large responsibility must not feel like a burden on the shoulders, and fortunately Nikolaj does not feel that way. When you are in charge of an independent family business, you have to fight to make things successful. Nikolaj has the necessary ambition and fighting spirit – he also proved that as a professional sportsman. We were thorough in planning the generational change, and now we have completed that process, says Anders Hust, who adds that the company has had the same VAT number since its establishment.

- Claire Group has certainly been through serious ups and downs; no company gets through 50 years without that. Every decade has brought new, major challenges and changes in the fashion industry, but we have been able to make mostly right decisions, and this is why we are still in the market. One of the very important strategic decisions I made, was when I closed down our private label production - we were supplying clothing to giants as H&M, Lindex, Dansk Supermarked (now Salling Group), etc. We lost about half of the turnover, but we were under a severe price pressure that only got worse with each collection we delivered, so I decided to focus on going deeper into the Claire brand and making it an even more well-known and sought-after brand.

I clearly remember how I personally traveled to about 34 major customers and told them that I didn’t have a collection with me today, but really just came to say thank you for the time, we had cooperated. It was crazy, Anders Hust notes.

Another unforgettable impression Anders Hust got was when he first traveled to Hong Kong in 1976 - as a young man in his early 20s - to investigate the possibilities for production in the East.

“I am 100 percent confident that Nikolaj can carry on the legacy.”

- I experienced the unspeakably miserable working conditions that existed in the factories at that time. I simply could not live with people having to work for my company under such terrible conditions, and therefore I entered into a partnership with selected production sites, where we established respectable conditions for the employees. In 1981 we got our first purchasing office with controller functions not only for the quality of the textiles, but also controlling the quality of the working conditions. Here, we were pioneers, and the focus on working environment and human rights that was established here, has been maintained and further developed throughout the years, says the founder of Claire Group. Today, Claire Group has production in both the East and in Europe.

- Claire Group has an enormous customer loyalty, and I believe that this loyalty is closely linked to the fact that we have always tried to be fair and decent. I am 100 percent confident that Nikolaj can carry on the legacy, says a proud Anders Hust, who, by the way, cannot see himself in a passive senior life without any connection to the business world. After Anders Hust left his top position in Claire Group, he became the CEO of Minimum A/S, of which he owns 75%, while Nikolaj Hust holds the remaining shares.

FAR OG FORRETNINGSPARTNER

Nikolaj Hust lægger ikke skjul på, at det ikke altid har været nemt at få et far-søn-forhold til at fungere, når man samtidig er forretningspartnere.

- Vi er forskellige som mennesker og dermed også forskellige som ledere. Min far har altid gerne villet være med i de fleste beslutninger, hvor jeg foretrækker at uddelegere ansvar. Det er nok meget et generationsspørgsmål… jeg ser klart en tendens til, at yngre ledere balancerer arbejds- og familieliv på en efter min mening sundere måde, end generationen før os, siger Nikolaj Hust.

- Jeg har altid elsket min far, og jeg har stor respekt for ham som forretningsmand. Vi er dog også forskellige, hvilket til tider har gjort processen svær og skabt uenigheder. Noget, som har været en læring, men som jeg samtidig godt ville have været foruden. Jeg vil gøre mit absolut bedste for at drive virksomheden videre efter de gode grundværdier, som vi altid har haft, men selvfølgelig kommer jeg til at modernisere virksomheden og drive den som min egen. Vi skal sikre, at vi altid er attraktive, dygtige, og at vi tilpasser os de krav, som markedet stiller. Lykkes vi med det, bliver vi her også 50 år mere, siger en smilende Nikolaj Hust, der tilføjer:

- Måske baner det afsluttede generationsskifte vej for, at vi kan få et mere naturligt familieforhold. Det håber jeg, for jeg savner at have en far, der ”bare” er far.

- Jeg vil også gerne udtrykke min allerdybeste taknemmelighed til alle de mennesker, der har arbejdet for Claire Group gennem årene. De mange engagerede og dygtige medarbejdere og ledere, vi har - og har haft gennem 50 århar i høj grad været medvirkende til virksomhedens succes, slutter han.

DAD AND BUSINESS PARTNER

Nikolaj Hust does not hide the fact that it has not always been easy to make a father-son relationship work when you are also business partners.

- We are different as people and therefore also different as leaders. My father has always wanted to be involved in most decisions, where I prefer to delegate responsibility. It is probably very much a generational issue... I clearly see a tendency for younger leaders to balance work and family life in a healthier way than the generation before us, says Nikolaj Hust.

- I have always loved my dad, and I have huge respect for him as a businessman. However, we are also different, which at times has made the process difficult and created disagreements. It has been a learning experience, that I would have liked to have done without. I will do my absolute best to continue to run the company according to our good core values, but of course I will modernize the company and run it as my own. We must ensure that we are always attractive, skilled, and that we adapt to the market demands.If we succeed in that, we will also be here for another 50 years, says a smiling Nikolaj Hust, adding:

- Perhaps the completed generational change paves the way for us to have a more natural family relationship. I hope so, because I miss having a dad who is ”just” a dad.

- I will also like to express my deepest gratitude to all the people who have worked for Claire Group over the years. The many committed and skilled employees and managers we have - and have had for 50 years - have contributed significantly to our company’s success, he concludes.

PLUS I NYT ÅRSREGNSKAB

Claire Group har netop offentliggjort regnskabet for 2024.

- Årsregnskabet viser, at vi takket været vores dygtige og engagerede medarbejderstab har formået at vende underskuddet fra 2023 til et plus på 6,9 mio. kr. før skat. Vi har mærket store udefrakommende udfordringer i form af valutaudsving på den svenske og norske krone, krigen i Ukraine og generel forbrugertilbageholdenhed i Europa. POSITIVE RESULT IN NEW ANNUAL REPORT

Claire Group has recently published its annual financial report for 2024.

- It shows that, thanks to our skilled and committed staff, we have managed to turn the loss in 2023 into a plus of 6.9 million DKK before taxes. We have experienced major external challenges in the form of currency fluctuations in the Swedish and Norwegian currencies, the war in Ukraine and general consumer restraint in Europe. But we have once again adapted the company to the new reality, and I look forward to leading Claire Group through the future threats that will certainly come. If we continue to be innovative and agile, I am sure that there is still a place in the market and a bright future for Claire Group, concludes Nikolaj Hust.
