2023HolsteinMarylandAnnual Winner ’s In the Circle

Michael Heath passed on March 23, 2023 at Shock Trauma Center from injuries sustained in an accident at his home farm, Spring Valley Farm, in Westminster, MD. We are saddened by the passing of our fellow Maryland dairyman. Michael Heath was known far and wide for his impact in the Jersey, Holstein and dairy industries. He had a special talent for picking out heifers from the pasture or cows in the barn and knowing they could shine in the showring. Michael was described by his peers as a “walking encyclopedia of cows and pedigrees”, he could tell you the pedigree for a Jersey’s granddam that was 4th place at Louisville from 8 years ago. Rarely did he forget a cow he had seen.
You could find Michael doing the grunt work in the barn, as a leadsman at the halter of some of the best bovines, or in a tuxedo placing classes at some of the most renowned shows in the world. He filled many roles in the industry and will leave a lasting impression for years to come. We’ll remember him at his happiest, on the halter of a good Jersey cow.
At this time we express our condolences to the entire Heath and Stiles Families; especially Billy, Betty, Susie, Wayne and Allen.

Maryland Holstein breeders and exhibitors continued to shine in 2022 at local, state, and national shows and they also took home top honors for BAA and continue to place bulls in studs as well. Our junior members continue to shine on all levels. Congratulations to all of the breeders and exhibitors of these fine Holstein cattle.
We brought back our sale in 2022 and it was a huge success. Thank you to all of the consignors and buyers for all of your support. Also thank you to all of the sale committee members and Chris and Jennifer Hill for putting together a fine sale. We would also like to thank long time sale chairman Dave Lease for his many years of service. We look forward to another great sale in 2023.
2022 was an interesting year with milk prices that were strong but also inputs were high as well. Hopefully milk prices will hold in 2023 and inputs will soften. Thank you to all of the current and past officers, directors, committee members and committee chairs and volunteers for all of your time and dedication to Maryland Holstein. It is your time and dedication that continue to make our association strong. We would also like to thank Laurie Savage for her continued service to our association.
The Maryland Holstein Association continues to be strong even with less and less farms. This is a testament to leaders and farm families. Thank you to all of the Maryland Holstein breeders and exhibitors and best of luck in 2023.
No strangers to the ‘winner’s circle’, Chris and Jen Hill of Thurmont, MD had an electric show year. On the cover we are featuring NorthEffect Wa Tatas-Red owned by Chris and Jen along with Tim and Sharyn Abbott. Tatas was bred by Dennis Snyder of Potsdam, NY.
North-Effect Wa Tatas-Red, 1st place Summer Yearling, took home top honors at the 2022 International Red & White Holstein Show at World Dairy Expo in Madison, WI. Out of 232 heifers exhibited, Tatas was named Junior Champion. Later in the week when it came time for the parade of champions, under the spotlights and an area full of spectators, Tatas was voted by the committee of judges as Reserve Supreme Champion Heifer.
Congratulations to the 2023 Maryland Holstein scholarship winners. The Maryland Holstein Scholarship Committee is excited to award one $2,000 scholarship to Bryce Zepp and three $1000 scholarships to Shea Cencula, Chad Patterson and Kendall Welsh.

Coldsprings Farms is currently operated by Matthew and Debra Hoff in Union Bridge, MD. As the 5th generation, Matt took over the farm from his late father, Marlin Hoff, in 2005. Since then, the milking herd has grown from 300 to 1300, with 2200 head total. Rolling herd average is sitting at 29900, with cows producing over 2000 pounds of components. The farm also works almost 3000 acres of ground. This is all accomplished with a team of 36 dedicated employees.
Coldsprings’ philosophy has always been to have cows that milk good, but looked good as well. Cows are bred for GTPI, udder composite, and feet and leg composite, while also placing an emphasis on polled genetics. The top genomic polled animals in the herd are consistently flushed to increase overall genetic value of animals and to increase the presence of the polled gene in the herd. Coldsprings has been awarded a Progressive Genetics Herd Award for 6 consecutive years. The average genomic value of heifer calves tested in 2022 was 2722 and 38% of calves registered were tested polled.

The Fritz family of New Windsor, MD were inducted into the Governor’s Agriculture Hall of Fame at the Taste of Maryland Agriculture dinner on February 3, 2023.
In 1912, Charles and Carrie Fritz purchased 90 acres of farmland and a large farmhouse in the beautiful Wakefield Valley, just outside of New Windsor in Carroll County. It was a dream for the couple, who had been tenant farmers for years. Six generations and 110 years later, the same farmhouse remains a homebase for their descendants. The current owners of the farm operation, which is now 480 acres in size, is the Fritz Family, LLC. The LLC members are Daniel Fritz and his two grown children, Jeffrey and Jessica. Jeffrey and his wife Diana have three daughters – Emily, Ella and Addison. Jessica and her husband Jeff have two sons –Sawyer and Cooper.
Over the years, the family has seen good times and bad, scarcity and abundance. Through it all, the family’s passion for farming has never waned. The farm was a dairy farm for 104 years and it was still profitable in 2016 when the decision was made to stop the milking operation. The workload of milking cows and the drop in milk prices contributed to the decision. Today, the farm has a small beef operation, but is mainly a crop farm that grows wheat, barley, soybeans, corn, hay and straw. Currently, the farm is 100 percent no till and has been for over 15 years. The family manages the fields using a software application and uses Global Positioning System (GPS) for accurate applications of chemicals and fertilizers.
The Fritz family has always been involved in community and agricultural organizations. Daniel’s brother George was a member of the Carroll County Agriculture Center and the Carroll County Soil Conservation Board, as well as the Southern States Board of Directors. Daniel was a leader for the following organizations: the Carroll County Holstein Club, the Carroll County Farm Bureau, and the Dairy Herd Improvement Association. Daniel and Jeffrey are involved with the New Windsor Volunteer Fire Department, as well. And the youngest generation are in Carroll County 4 -H, where they exhibit cows, swine, and lambs.
National dairy checkoff foodservice partners, specifically McDonald’s, Domino’s and Taco Bell, have delivered significant results since the start of our partnerships in 2008. Like what? Selling 2.2 billion more milk equivalent pounds of U.S. dairy annually!
• About 90% of beverages offered on McDonald’s McCafe line contain dairy, and products such as lattes are more than 70% milk. And they switched to butter from margarine in 2015.
• Domino’s became the number one pizza company worldwide after changing its recipe focus to include more cheese with annual sales at nearly $18 billion.
• Dairy checkoff scientists helped Taco Bell ramp up cheese-packed menu recipes, as well as developing a dairy-based coffee creamer.

For 2023, we are highlighting our members who made it into the winner’s circle, whether they are being recognized for outstanding achievements, winning awards, or excelling in the show ring. I am excited that we are able to bring the annual back to a printed booklet this year, as well as continuing to have a presence online. Thank you to all the breeder and commercial sponsorships for placing ads and allowing the annual to continue to be published. Together as an association we are working towards a brighter future for our dairyman and the dairy industry of Maryland.
Thank you!
