Congratulations to Maryland Holstein breeders on their many achievements in 2023. Maryland exhibitors were successful in the show ring, achieved outstanding BAAs, and cattle that were recognized for milk records as well. Maryland genetics are highly sought after and have placed many bulls in studs, and also are sought after for consignments in some of the top sales in the country. Maryland has not only top notch cattle, but outstanding people as well. Our junior members continue to excel in their activities, congratulations to them and best of luck to our youth in 2024.
The 2023 installment of the Maryland State Sale was a huge success thanks to Chris and Jen Hill, Derek Lease and his sale committee. We look forward to another successful sale in 2024.
We eagerly anticipate returning our tradition of hosting banquets. Thank you to Lisa Schwartzbeck and her committee for organizing this event. We look forward to coming together for some Holstein fellowship.
In closing, thank you to all of the past presidents and board members and a huge thank you to all of the board members that have served with me. Your dedication and commitment are key to making our association great. A special thank you to our secretary, Laurie Savage for her time and efforts. Also I would like to thank our long time show committee chair Parker Welch as he will be stepping down this year. Please join me in welcoming our new president, Brett Haines. Brett has been a lifelong friend, he possesses both the confidence and leadership qualities to keep our association headed in the right direction. Our association is full of outstanding individuals of all ages, and it has been a privilege to serve you. Thank you all very much and best wishes in 2024!
As we “moove forward” into 2024, we celebrate another year of progress and growth within the Maryland Holstein community. It is with great pleasure that I present to you the 2024 Maryland Holstein Annual. In this booklet, you will find a celebration of our collective achievements, from the remarkable awards in breeding and genetics from our farmers, to our dairy youth making an impact. It is a testament to the passion and hard work of each and every member of our community.
I would like to extend my sincerest gratitude to all those who have contributed to this year’s booklet. Your support is invaluable in helping us showcase the best of what the Maryland Holstein association has to offer and beyond.
Here’s to moooving forward together to uphold the proud legacy of the Maryland Holstein Association and ensure a bright future for generations to come.
On the cover:
The passion and dedication of our youth are a big part in “mooving forward” towards continued success in this dynamic industry. We celebrate the next generation of our dairy farmers, contributors, leaders, and advocates.
Congratulations to the 2024 Maryland Holstein scholarship winners. The Maryland Holstein Scholarship Committee is excited to award one $2,000 scholarship to Shea Cencula and three $1000 scholarships to Bryce Zepp, Chad Patterson and Kendall Welsh.
Shea Cencula, the daughter of Joseph and Hope Cencula, is the recipient of the $2,000 2024 Maryland Holstein Scholarship. Shea is a sophomore at Purdue University majoring in veterinary nursing. While in college, she works as a veterinary assistant at Green Valley Animal Hospital. She was very active in 4-H and FFA, where she held many positions and received numerous awards. She held the position of president in the Linganore High FFA Chapter. Also, in high school, she was a member of National Honor Society, swim team and concert choir. Shea belongs to many agricultural organizations, including other breed associations and has shown at various shows. In 4-H, she participated in dairy skillathon and dairy judging. This past year was Shea’s first year to participate in dairy judging. She went to Louisville as an individual and placed 24th and 10th in Holsteins. The Mount Airy resident was a past Frederick County dairy princess, where she represented the industry well and helped with many dairy promotions. Shea is also a business entrepreneur; she owns her own business selling goat soaps and lotions from her goat herd. This business helps her to help pay for her animals’ feed and other expenses. After graduating college, Shea plans to become an animal veterinary nurse.
Bryce Zepp, the son of Gabe and Kelly Zepp, will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Bryce hails from New Windsor, where he was very active in high school, FFA and 4-H. In 4-H, Bryce excelled in dairy judging, where he was first at the All-American contest, and his team was fifth in Madison. Bryce is no stranger to the show ring, winning numerous awards for his Holsteins at the local, state and national levels. Sports are also very important to Bryce. He played football, basketball and lacrosse in high school. He was involved in student government and Fellowship of Christian Athletes and is a member of many agricultural organizations. Bryce is a sophomore at Stevenson University majoring in business administration and is a part of the college football team. While also taking care of his own herd, Bryce has worked off the farm for KLL Lemon & Sons and for his uncle’s Christmas tree farm. He has also worked and traveled with a beef breeder exhibiting cattle at national shows. After graduation, Bryce hopes to use his business degree in the agricultural field and to continue to work on his grandparents’ farm and one day hope to take it over or have a sustainable agriculture business.
Breckin Welsh of Knoxville is a recipient of a $1,000 scholarship. Breckin is the son of Matt and Kelli Welsh. Mr. Welsh is currently attending Frederick Community College majoring in computer engineering. While in college, he continues to help with numerous jobs on the home farm. In high school he was active in National Honor Society, baseball and basketball and was a computer science completer. In 4-H he participated in dairy bowl, dairy judging and gave demonstrations at his local club. Breckin also showed locally, in the state and nationally. Breckin is a member of the Petersville Ruritan and helps with the butchering, canned food drive and Toys for Tots. After college, Breckin wants to pursue a career in computers and engineering.
Kendall Welsh of Knoxville receives a $1,000 scholarship. Matt and Kelli Welsh are the proud parents of Kendall. Kendall will graduate in May 2024 with an associate’s degree in business management from Frederick Community College. In high school, Kendall was involved in FFA, Chess Club and National Honor Society. He was very active in the show ring with his Holstein cattle at the local, state and national shows. During his 4-H career, he participated in dairy bowl and dairy judging. Kendall works on the home farm while in college and helps where needed. The Knoxville native is active in the community as a member of the Petersville Ruritan Club. In the Ruritan club, he helps with butchering, breakfasts, canned food drives and Toys for Tots. After graduation, Kendall wants to continue his love for volunteering and find a career he loves.
Bryce Zepp is the winner of the Marlin Hoff Scholarship. Bryce is the son of Kelly and Gabe Zepp and lives in New Windsor Maryland. He is a sophomore at Stevenson University, majoring in Business Administration. Bryce is a ten year 4-H member and a past member of the Francis Scott Key FFA program and has been very active in county, state and national Holstein activities. He was the 2019 MD Outstanding Holstein member. He placed first five times at the state dairy judging contest, was second place overall at the PA All-American 4-H Judging contest, and was eighth place at the National FFA Dairy Judging Contest. He was overall dairy fitting and showing champion at the 2018 Maryland State Fair, champion intermediate showman at the PA All-American show in 2019, and exhibited the supreme champion heifer at the Carroll County Fair in 2016 and 2019. Bryce also competed in 4-H and Junior shows with his beef cattle, sheep and swine projects. Bryce played three sports in high school, and is a member of the Stevenson football team. After graduation, he plans to pursue a career in the agriculture industry, as well as continuing to breed registered cattle.

Congratulations to Jaycey Miller for winning Grand Champion in the junior Red and White show, with her 1st placed 5-year-old, Ms Avalanche Avon-Red-ET.
17 Ex Daughters ~ 11 VG 2 year Olds bilant has given us and ending it with six All-American Nominations!
Once there was this little girl and her pretty red fall calf, they started an exciting new chapter at Pheasant Echo’s. One that lead them on their first trip to Madison, first medal around the little girls neck, and so many new friendships.❤ Diego will always be remembered for the exciting “firsts” we experienced with her, but she will surely never be forgotten as her legacy has grown to many daughters, granddaughters and more still on the way.
This year we are honoring the husband and wife duo of Billy and Betty Ann Heath as our Distinguished Service Member(s). Billy and Betty Ann have decided to retire after dedicating over 40 years of taking quality dairy cattle pictures. The service they have provided to MD Holstein breeders makes them the perfect recipient of this award.
Billy's start in the dairy industry was an early one, having made both FFA and 4-H judging teams, traveling to the national contest and winning, then continuing on to Europe where his team also won. His keen eye for placing and judging cattle, undoubtedly made him a well known fitter and later on a photographer that wasn't satisfied until the cow was placed exactly right for the perfect photo. In his very early years he worked under Buddy Hill at Logwood Farms. After meeting and marrying Betty Ann Stiles he moved on to being an AI technician with Curtiss Breeding Service, all the while working nights at Black and Decker. With what free time he had he continued fitting and moved on to photography, shadowing Mr. Jack Remsburg.
The art of photography is what brought Billy to the camera. He recalls his earliest photo being made with a polaroid, and the late Gary Derr in front of the lens holding one of his MD bred beauties. Jack lent him his first "real" camera and the rest is history. Derr’s, Penn Gate, Windsor Manor and Spring Valley were amongst the firsts giving this new photographer a place to start.
Cattle photography has seen many changes over the years and Billy, along with the help of Betty Ann, were able to adapt. In the early years, film had to be sent north to be developed in color. It was a huge time saver when digital came about and Betty could tackle that on her own in the early 2000's. Betty read books and taught herself how to do the digital development. Both noted that while there was a learning curve, the ease of set up for the photos was a huge bonus. No cows pictured with the Billy Heath stamp were ever altered in any way to change the confirmation of the cow. And Billy always understood and recognized the importance of milk prices when setting his rates.
Aside from his successful photography career, Billy and Betty Ann are the proud parents of Susie Heath Poole and the late Michael Heath. They are equally as proud of their son in-law Richard, grandchildren Ryan and McKenzie, and great grandchildren Alexander and Rowan Poole. Billy has said that he believes his greatest contribution to the dairy industry was his son Michael. That may be a valid point but we believe the many years dedicated to the MD Judging program, countless photos taken at MD State Fair and his reliable, friendly on farm service are also things to be extremely proud of. Thank you Billy and Betty, enjoy your much deserved retirement!

Our first ever Jr. All American nomination
A huge thank you to Pheasant Echos Farm for their awesome care of both Evelyn and Eden and other members of this family. We would also like to thank the crew at Coldsprings Farms for their awesome care of other members of this family. Thank you to both of these families and others that have supported us over the years with your skills, care, and knowledge. Without you none of this would be possible.
