President’s Report
Brett Haines
As we reflect on the past year, it is clear that Maryland Holstein has had another tremendous and successful season. Our association continues to thrive, and it is a testament to the dedication and passion of our breeders and supporters.
One of the standout moments of the year was our MD State Sale – A Virtual Experience, which proved to be a tremendous success. The quality of cattle consigned and the strong interest from buyers reaffirmed Maryland’s reputation for producing outstanding Holsteins. A special thank you to our sale manager, Chris Hill, for his leadership and expertise in making this event a success, as well as to our sale committee and all the volunteers who helped make it possible.
Maryland breeders also made a strong impact on the national stage, with several All-American and Jr. All-American nominations stemming from Maryland-bred cattle. This recognition highlights the depth of quality within our herds and the commitment of our breeders to excellence. Congratulations to all those who achieved this prestigious honor!
We are especially proud of our Maryland Holstein youth, who continue to showcase their dedication and enthusiasm for the breed. This year, our youth represented the state at the National Holstein Convention in Utah, demonstrating not only their skills but also their commitment to the future of the dairy industry. Investing in our youth is investing in the future of our association. Whether they are competing in national contests, showing cattle, or participating in leadership roles, their involvement today will shape the success of Maryland Holstein for generations to come. We encourage all young members to stay engaged, take advantage of the opportunities available, and continue striving for excellence.
The business of our association remains strong, and that is due in large part to the dedicated work of our committees. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all of our committee chairs for their leadership and commitment. Their efforts in organizing events, overseeing programs, and keeping our association moving forward do not go unnoticed. It is through their hard work, along with the engagement of our members, that we continue to build upon Maryland Holstein’s strong foundation.
As we look ahead to another promising year, I encourage everyone to stay involved, support events, and continue working together to ensure the success of Maryland Holstein. Thank you for your dedication, and I look forward to another year of growth and achievement for our association.

Junior Highlights
2025 Scholarship Winners
Congratulations to the 2025 Maryland Holstein scholarship winners. The Maryland Holstein Scholarship Committee is excited to award one $2,000 scholarship to Kelsey Zepp and three $1000 scholarships to Bryce Zepp, Shea Cencula and Breckin Welsh.
Kelsey Zepp
Kelsey Zepp from New Windsor is the winner of the 2025 Maryland Holstein Scholarship for $2,000. Kelsey, daughter of Gabe and Kelly, is a 2024 graduate of Francis Scott Key High school where she was active in FFA and played basketball and lacrosse and won awards in Agriculture and photography. She was very active in 4-H in many dairy and livestock activities. She has won numerous awards in both species at the state and national levels. The New Windsor resident was named the overall Maryland Holstein Distinguished Junior Member in 2023 and competed at the national level where she was selected as a National DJM semi-finalist. She is currently a freshman at Black Hawk College-East Campus in Illinois and is a member of the Livestock Judging Team. In college she is majoring in Agriculture communications and minoring in Agriculture Business. Her goals are to focus on livestock photography and marketing and dreams of owning her own livestock photography business.
Kelsey Zepp was also the winner of the Marlin Hoff Scholarship awarded at the Maryland Holstein Futurity this past August.
Bryce Zepp
Bryce Zepp is one of this year recipients of the $1000 Maryland Holstein Scholarship. Bryce, son of Gabe and Kelly Zepp, is a 2022 graduate of Francis Scott Key High School and currently a Junior at Stevenson University in Owings Mills, MD. Bryce is majoring in Business Administration and a member of the football team and football leadership group. Bryce was an active member of 4-H and FFA activities exhibiting dairy and beef on county, state and national levels, is a past Maryland Holstein Distinguished JR Member record book winner and participated on the state Dairy Judging team. You can now find Bryce helping out with clipping workshops for county 4-H events or assisting as a ringman at shows helping the next generation of 4-Hers. After graduation Bryce would like to find a job in the agriculture field and eventually run a sustainable agriculture-based business on the family farm.
Shea Cencula
Shea Cencula, the daughter of Joseph and Hope Cencula, of Mount Airy Maryland is the $1,000 recipient of the 2025 Maryland Holstein scholarship. Shea is a junior at Purdue University majoring in Veterinary Nursing. While in college she works as a veterinary assistant at Green Valley Animal Hospital. She was very active in 4-H and FFA , where she held many positions and received many numerous awards. She held the position of president in the Linganore High FFA Chapter. Also in high school, she was a member of National Honor society, swim team and concert choir. Ms. Cencula belongs to many agricultural organizations including other breed associations and has shown at various shows. In 4-H, she participated in dairy skilathon and dairy judging and competed at the national dairy judging contest in Louisville. The Mount Airy resident served as a past Frederick County Dairy princess where she represented the industry very well and helped with many dairy promotions. Shea is also a business entrepreneur; she owns her own business selling goat soaps and lotions from her goat herd. This business helps her to help pay for her animal’s feed and other expenses. After graduating college, Shea plans to become an Animal Veterinary Nurse while focusing on animal nutrition.
Breckin Welsh
Breckin Welsh of Knoxville is a recipient of a $1,000 scholarship. Breckin is the son of Matt and Kelli Welsh and graduated in 2023 from Brunswick High School. Mr. Welsh is currently attending Frederick Community College majoring in Bio-technology. While in college he helps with numerous jobs on the home farm. In high school he was active in NHS, baseball and basketball and was a computer science completer. In 4-H he participated in dairy bowl, dairy judging and gave demonstrations at his local club. Breckin also showed locally, in the state and nationally. Breckin is a member of the Petersville Ruritan and helps with the butchering, canned food drive and toy for tots. He also helped make blankets for disabled veterans and sponsored a family at Christmas. After college Breckin wants to pursue a career in the Bio-technology field so that he can help with life-saving medications for people and animals.

The Maryland juniors had a great time at the National Holstein Convention this past summer in Salt Lake City. Atley Shafer was a YDJM finalist, she also won the intermediate speech division. Meghan Brauning was 3rd individual in the junior Jeopardy contest. Congratulations!

Scott Youse
Scott Youse grew up in Oley PA, on a small family dairy farm. He moved to Maryland to continue his passion after graduating from Delaware Valley University with a degree in dairy science with a minor in agriculture business in 1995. He started working at Oakland View Farms where he now owns a majority share. Scott is currently a residing board member of Maryland Agricultural council, Treasure of the Eastern Shore Holstein association, and Vice President of Caroline County Farm Bureau. During his time at Oakland View Scott has developed 16 excellent, and 75 very good cows And has bred 14 excellent and 68 very good cows. Oakland View farms is currently milking approximately 700 cows including 50 registered Jerseys, 95% of the Holstein herd is registered or identified.
90% of the herd is considered “commercial” with the focus on a functional cow including plus on type and feet legs with a higher emphasis on udder traits. Positive health traits along with fat and protein components are also included when evaluating the bull selections for this group. The remaining 10% of the herd is “show” cattle or “special” cattle. This group is bred to improve pedigrees over the generations, with the goal being multiple generations of excellent cattle.
We’ve been fortunate enough to have Scott serve as our MD Holstein president for the 2020-2022 term and he currently serves as ex officio on the board. For all of these reasons Scott is the perfect candidate for this years Outstanding Dairymen Award.
