Upon reflection, having recently visited Te Papa and the excellent Gallipoli exhibition, as a millennial I think that our role, generationally, is to honour the gift of the distance that we are fortunate to have away from the trauma and the atrocities of world wars, and to champion forging the required positive steps and balances we need to take, to make technology, global-connectedness, sustainability and peace aspirations work.

On health and safety, we take another topical, in-depth look at sun safety. Roofers are especially vulnerable to the ravages of UV, so we cannot afford to drop the ball on this subject. Get up to speed on your risk profiles and enter to win your team a sunscreen bundle member giveaway (p26). And a leadership piece on cultivating a heightsafety culture from our RANZ President is essential H&S reading too (p29).

In Aotearoa New Zealand, the demand for housing and infrastructure and your specialist input in roofing is far from slowing, despite the challenges thrown up by 2020, and we need to respond to all the concurrent demands.

We’re well on a track to get to Wellington for the 2021 RANZ Conference at Te Papa, and catch up in person for further connection and inspiration. Wellington-based members G&S Roofing share their story of roofing in and around the capital city in the lead-up – see p20.

And I guess we’ll need to stay nimble and prepared for more unknowns in 2021, too.

Take heart and inspiration from the outstanding innovators that we have within our RANZ member network, and their proven abilities to adapt and respond to our country’s evolving roofing needs. CEO Summer 2020 This is certainly a year like no other and, for many members, it’ll be a year you’ll be very happy to see the back of, as we work our way through these Covid times.

Work volumes continue to make somewhat of a mockery of the economists’ predictions, but I would still urge caution. Be mindful of your numbers; look after your customers; use the Construction Contracts Act; own issues on your sites; and look after your team and yourself.

Last night I watched the second episode of Man Enough (TVNZ On-Demand), presented

by Matt Chisolm. It occurred to me that we have plenty to work on around mental health, and the overriding message is that we need to do two things: listen and talk – in any order.

Talk to your mates and colleagues; listen to your mates and colleagues. There are plenty of resources out there you can call upon.

During lockdown we provided access to Sir John Kirwan’s Mentemia App (mentemia. com). It’s free. Please use tools like these. Our male bravado is not helping. Our families deserve better, and we also should do better for ourselves.

November – or Movember, as it has become – is about mental health, testicular and prostate cancer. During the past few weeks I have had conversations with mates, who are all RANZ members, about health issues. I am not sure that we would have had these

conversations a few years ago, but we are now, which is good news. These were not hard conversations. I lost my mother when she was 47, and have had frequent invasive tests to ease my mind and make sure I am around for a lot longer. Please make time to have a check-up.

RANZ members should stand in a circle and pat each other on the back. Why? I was assessing the most recent passes and completions for National Qualifications, and over 80 percent of these new tradespeople work for RANZ members. This is an outstanding result. Remember these people started their training journey two-and-a-half to three years ago. RANZ Executive members of the past and present should also be proud of this outcome.

It’s one thing to listen to the RANZ Executive, but your actions make us feel that we are making a difference. Current sign-ups are more than double compared to year to date.

Again, thanks for taking on trainees. Yes, the government has provided incentives, but it has still taken a huge commitment from you.

Safety has been a huge focus for RANZ as well. We have been assessing data from ACC, which is allocated to our Industry Code. We have not had a fatality in the last five years – a tremendous result! But we still have work to do, as there were 4,654 injuries during that time. Injuries to our hands and fingers represented over 25 percent of that total, and over 20 percent of the injuries were back injuries. Eye injuries accounted for nearly seven percent of that total. Your RANZ Health and Safety Committee is working through this data with more advice to come.

This is the last RoofLink before Christmas.

On behalf of your Executive, we wish you a restful festive season, and look forward to a prosperous, safe and pandemic-free New Year.

Local team wins The team at Comag recently donated to the Bedford Park Trust, a new roof for the changing rooms at their local Matamata grounds. Comag have been naming sponsors of the Comag Matamata College 1st XV for over 25 years. They were victorious at their season finale at the Waikato Secondary Schools’ Premier Co-Ed 1st XV competition, which has the team at Comag buzzing. What a wonderful way to be really connected and giving back to the community.

Safety first Dan and the team at Stone Roofing were the stoked winners of the last MAXSAFE safety prize pack. Mason and Paul and the Maxsafe team were thrilled to provide Dan and his Waikato team with their quality, home-grown safety gear, as pictured.

Brewtown build The team at Empire Roofing are currently involved with a huge job – 17,000 m2 – adding and replacing the roofing for craft-beer complex at Brewtown in Upper Hutt. It’s where the old Dunlop factory used to be, where Ardex has origins, too.

The roof shown here is for a go-kart area, where the roof had to be replaced in three separate sections, including the removal of asbestos. Steel + Tube and Alsynite (Ultrasafe) are key suppliers for the project.

Another win for Architectural Metalformers Architectural Metalformers installed the fascia for another architectural award winner, adding it to their ever-growing list. This recently won a regional award in the Waikato Bay of Plenty category of Te Kawhia Whaihanga, NZ Institute of Architects Awards. Here is what the judges had to say about the project: “This building displays an uncommon concern for quality and design detail in an industrial context. The luminous mesh façade has a proud street presence and serves as a dynamic signboard for the business behind.

Building forms are deftly modelled with skewed geometry and contrasting materials to signal function and lessen the effect of warehouse bulk.”

Lifelong dream A special home, thirty years in the making, is roofed and clad in COLORSTEEL® FlaxPod® by Freeman Roofing Nelson.

Set on six acres of rural land, overlooking a reserve of native bush and their recently enhanced nut orchard, sits a Nelson couple’s new home – one they have dreamt about building for 30 years.

After 34 years of marriage, three children, and 30 years of having a business, Leanne and Steve Fry set about looking for the right plot of land to build their dream home. Says Leanne of this undertaking… “We both had a dream to own a block of land; for years we thought about it, but we always seemed to be too busy with the kids and the business.”

All that wishing and hoping changed when the perfect six acres came on the market at

Appleby, 19km from Nelson, which they bought by tender of the sub-division of a former government research orchard. The sale included a house and a workshop.

Having secured the land, rather than live in the house – “I hated the house”, says Leanne.

“Goodness knows what I was thinking when we viewed it” – they decided to rent it out for a couple of years, giving them more time to think and plan for the future.

During those years Leanne and Steve worked to improve the land, re-fencing, planting 300 trees, ploughing and re-sowing, along with experimenting with fruit trees, and eventually creating a nut orchard

specialising in macadamias, almonds, hazelnuts and pine nuts.

They hired various architects to draw up plans, based on what they wanted for the new home, but despite spending ‘a small fortune’, they were never fully happy with any of the plans presented and admit they didn’t feel comfortable challenging the designers. In the end they designed the home themselves with the help of a draughtsman who tidied up a few areas.

“We wanted a modern farmhouse with a rustic flavour, but a few luxury aspects as well. It was to be a flat roof to follow the style of the sleep-outs, with corrugated iron, to mirror the roof style of the workshop.

“We stipulated low maintenance and that the home would sit low on the slope of the land in order to capture the amazing views. It was important to have three separate areas – one area of the house for us, then a guest wing for our children – now grown up – with its own bathroom, lounge area and two bedrooms.

The house presents as a series of pavilions, each area capturing the best of the rural

views – the corridors between each wing also offering views through double-glazed, argonfilled windows. Inside the main pavilion is an office, dining and living areas, with a kitchen, scullery and three big storage areas – one at each end, and one near the garage.

Leanne and Steve were focused on using local businesses for bathroom fixtures and fittings, kitchen, cabinetry and joinery, and wanted New Zealand products, too, which is where Freeman Roofing Nelson stepped in to assist and advise on the roofing aspects of this development.

They fell in love with the new Six-Rib COLORSTEEL® FlaxPod® Matte for the wall cladding, and the FlaxPod® from the standard gloss range on the roof – all supplied by Freeman Roofing and installed by contractors Daniel and Konrad Zust.

“We just love the dramatic black effect this product has provided and it blends beautifully with the rural landscape – and we are definitely on trend with the COLORSTEEL® wall cladding,” says Leanne.

“We were so motivated that we decided to

allow the build to be a charge-up job – risky, but, we thought, honest. We hired three independent builders, and they worked well together. We feel we got an amazing, old-fashioned build. The external walls are six inches thick and the internal walls four inches thick – all fully insulated and we have a polished concrete floor."

The Appleby home is not quite complete – painting and choice of colours and wallpapers is continuing – but the pair hope they can move in before Christmas. Leanne and Steve are still working; Steve with an engineering company in Nelson, and Leanne is a health care assistant working in a psychiatric unit.

Leanne is happy to now have the kitchen she envisaged with its old fashioned butcher’s block and she is enthusiastic about the bright orange front door, which blends beautifully with the wall cladding.

They have big plans for the landscaping to include decks galore and some Corten steel elements, to provide interest on this gentle, sloping site.

What is Viking Warmspan?

Viking WarmSpan is a warm-roof-onsteel roofing assembly for low-sloped roofs, insulated from the outside with rigid foam on top of the substrate. As with all properly designed warm roof solutions, the dew point from a warm roof assembly finds itself on the outside of the roof, so there are no issues around condensation nor is there a need to ventilate the ceiling cavity (which would negate the thermal efficiency gained by this type of assembly).

Cool in summer, warm in winter The successful re-roof of one of Auckland’s most prominent buildings has made it watertight and thermally-efficient, and expected to last well beyond its 20-year warranty period.

The Hilton is an eight-story, 187-room hotel, located on Auckland’s waterfront at the end of Princes Wharf, and is recognised as one of the city’s gateway buildings. When the time came to replace its existing metal roof with a new one, the client asked for a more thermally efficient solution, along with the usual requirements of durability, water tightness, salt-spray corrosion resistance, and the ability to withstand high winds.

The building roof design was such that the large ceiling void, with its myriad of reticulated services, did not lend itself to a typical ‘cold roof’ insulation system, so installing a warm roof system was the preferable option. It was also critical that the roof be replaced without upgrading the original steel portal frames or purlins, as the extra time and cost to replace them would be prohibitive.

Being an avid fan of bitumen-based membrane products, the architect, Babbage Consultants Ltd, specified a torch-on waterproofing system, and recommended Viking WarmSpan – one they trusted as an energy efficient and cost-effective warm-roof system.

After some minor modification to the steel purlins, it was straight to work with fixing down the trapezoidal steel tray substrate by Viking-approved installers. The steel tray sheets were sealed during installation and proprietary flashing tapes were then used to seal any transitions or junctions to complete a ‘built-in’ vapour barrier.

Next, came the insulation layer – 75mm Kingspan Polyiso panels. Viking WarmSpan uses proprietary two-component, polyurethane adhesive to bond the Kingspan Polyiso panels to the steel tray. This fully adhered system, using F.A.S.T technology, provides greater strength and wind-uplift resistance than mechanical fixing, while at the same time avoiding thermal bridging.

Finally, Viking’s two-layer, Gemini APP Torch-On membrane was installed over the Polyiso boards, providing the waterproofing layer(s). Made from ‘plasticised’ bitumen, this robust material is used for roofs and under floating decks and in gutters in New Zealand’s Climate Zones 1 and 2 (which is the North Island excluding the volcanic plateau). APP membranes have a high melt

A traditional membrane roof solution usually requires a 17mm ply substrate, which, under E2/AS1 of the NZBC, must be supported every 400mm (across the sheet) by 1200mm (along the sheet edges), in order to comply. The carpentry involved results in a huge amount of weight, labour and associated costs. Viking WarmSpan; with its rigid foam and trapezoidal steel tray base, gives the system a spanning ability between purlins of up to 3.6m (versus the 400mm centred joists required under a heavy 17mm plywood substrate for a traditional membrane roof).

Additionally, being a lightweight system (less than the 20kg/m2 maximum), it has the ability to be installed in half the time of a traditional membrane roof, saving on construction costs. The wide-span capability and speed of installation, allows for a 30 per cent saving in material and labour costs to achieve the same R-value rating of more conventional membrane roof solutions (cold roofs).

25 years of innovation This year, Ampelite NZ is celebrating the milestone of 25 years in business in New Zealand. A long-time innovator in roof lighting products, Ampelite provides energy-saving, plastic roof products to match nearly all of the metal profiles available on the New Zealand market.

Ampelite, a RANZ associate member and sponsor since June 1995, has been a stellar performer since entering the New Zealand market, constantly producing innovative products that offer environmentally friendly, natural daylight solutions across both the domestic and the industrial/ commercial markets.

CEO Kerry Andrew was the driver for establishing Ampelite in New Zealand, initially importing from the parent company base in Melbourne. When Ampelite first came to New Zealand, several surface coatings that gave longevity and durability were applied to fibreglass sheeting. Ampelite introduced Wonderglas GC gel-coated sheeting to the local market in 1995, expressly to combat our very harsh environment. The highly UV-resistant gel coat on Wonderglas GC provides an impenetrable barrier, reducing surface erosion and loss of light transmission to negligible proportions.

In September, 2014, Ampelite changed the name of its Wonderglas GC product to Wonderglas-S-996. Silmar S-996 was specifically designed as a clear gel coat for roofing and, because the Silmar S-996 gel

coat was synonymous with the Wonderglas brand, it made sense to lock both brands together so that customers could be guaranteed quality. However, the composition of the Wonderglas gel coat has not changed since the company started supplying it in 1995, and Wonderglas S-996 continues to be a preferred solution for commercial buildings throughout the country. It is recommended for commercial and retail applications where excellent long-term light transmission is required.

Having initially supplied Calder Stewart and Long Run Industries, one of the immediate issues was the impractical logistical problem of importing 12m-long roofing from Australia when competitors were supplying sheeting up to 25m long throughout New Zealand.

After discussions with Dimond, which had been manufacturing fibreglass roof sheeting in Christchurch for many years, Ampelite took over Dimond’s manufacturing facility in 2000.

This quickly led to the establishment of the Penrose manufacturing unit – built from scratch and introducing new technology in the process –giving Ampelite a strong manufacturing presence in New Zealand with a suite of products to meet market demands.

Kerry says that because the composition of Ampelite’s gel coat and the basic manufacturing process in which it is applied to the sheeting has not changed since Wonderglas S-996 entered the market in 1995 (as Wonderglas GC), it is the oldest and most dependable gel-coated roofing sheet available.

Much of the fibreglass sheeting now used in New Zealand is fire retardant and, depending on the building type and use, needs to meet a specific group number. Ampelite is undertaking some rationalisation of its fibreglass manufacturing sheeting; its proprietary SL Group 3 resin system has been standard offer since mid-October, meaning all Ampelite GRP products manufactured in New Zealand from 2020 will use Ampelite’s proprietary Group 3 fire retardant resin system that is currently used to manufacture SL sheeting products.

Customers will no longer need to specify whether sheets should be fire rated or non-fire rated, simplifying the process for specification, product ordering and supply of the product. This will provide an added benefit for any existing buildings having continued on page 14

skylight replacements as they will be fire rated, bringing them up to current fire standards where a Group 3 spread of flame is applicable.

Many products in the Ampelite collection are worthy of special mention. Premium grade Wonderglas Coolite IR is designed to significantly reduce solar heat transmission and save on energy costs. Coolite IR filters out 99 percent of harmful ultraviolet radiation but allows a high level of visible light – at the same time reflecting out a large percentage of infra-red waves, reducing heat so the building stays cooler.

The Ampelite Dual Roof system – popular for retail, sports stadiums and multi-purpose halls – provides natural light while ensuring a minimum loss of heat. How does this work?

Condensation formed on the skylight panel due to warm air rising to meet the cold skylight surface can be eliminated with Ampelite’s system, which features double glazing to create a functional, insulated skylight system. This product is designed specifically for the New Zealand climate – it is

Development of products to match New Zealand conditions has been Ampelite’s forté in terms of offering many solutions for roof lighting for both the residential and commercial/industrial markets. Ampelair is the company’s wind-driven ventilator – with sizes ranging from 150mm through to 900mm, available in aluminium, and stainless steel for harsher conditions. on the health and safety aspects of COVID-19, with clear information on the systems and controls required in businesses, has been positive and largely responsible for members faring well over the eight months of the pandemic. The industry is busy – the books are full – there’s maybe not so much of the uncertainty that confronts many other sectors of the construction industry.

The connections that have been formed since the inception of New Zealand Women in Roofing (NZWiR) in 2019 have become a vital link for many of our members. We have seen the reach of members networking together through meetings and also through webinars.

Our webinars have become a great way for our sponsors to be able to connect with our members, as well as providing great learning opportunities from within our own industry.

Traditional reasons for building relationships continue to be important; and although new technologies have allowed us to participate in webinars, networking and in-person meetings are still very important.

Thought leadership and influence still depend on building personal relationships.

We have to make the most of the opportunities that we have presented to us at any given point of time, because in this current Covid environment, we just don’t know when the plans could be pulled out from under our feet. Making more connections now will allow us to extend our reach and build the networks that we may later need to rely on.

It may seem obvious, but one of the greatest benefits of making personal connections is friendship. Working and pursuing your career can be lonely, especially if you are working in a small business. One of the best benefits of taking the time to connect with other professionals is that they understand your journey. When you are facing challenges or frustrations, a trusted friend can prove invaluable. The best time to find a true friend is before you need one.

Another thing to value about connecting with others is knowledge discovery. We can’t all be experts in all things, nor does any one person have the time to track down every interesting idea. When you spend time connecting with others, you have the opportunity to gain from their knowledge and share your own. Working as a team often leads to discoveries that a single person alone might not ever find. Collaborating with colleagues from the same industry energizes and inspires.

Especially now, in these uncertain times, none of us can predict the future. Sometimes life just happens, and if you aren’t

The family dynamic of G&S Roofing, a RANZ member since 2010, was an asset during this year’s COVID-19 lockdown and business restrictions. When life in New Zealand as we know it changed in March, businesses like G&S had time to re-evaluate what a new “normal” would look like.

“We used the time in lockdown to take a good look at ourselves – in particular, how we need to plan for another pandemic in the future,” says general manager and director Jon Lucas.

“Having said that, we feel lucky to be in this industry when tourism, hospitality, events and education businesses have taken such a massive hit due to COVID-19. Roofing is a great trade to be in and we feel lucky to know we will always have work out there – people will always need roofs repaired, replaced or newly created, and that’s our speciality.

“We have a number of big projects in the pipeline that will take us into the middle of next year at this stage – a great position to be in.”

Formation G&S Roofing was founded in the middle of the 2007 recession by Jon (as the roofer) and his father-in-law, Gary McLean, who brought his small business experience to the new company to “take care of the books”. Jon's brother, Clinton Lucas, was the first employee for G&S and the family connection continued with his sisters-in-law Amanda McLean (now operations manager) and Kristina Jenkins (administration) along with her husband, James Jenkins, coming on board. James

Jenkins worked his way up through the ranks, having known nothing about roofing when he joined the family firm, and is now lead foreman. Jon's 19 year-old son, Ethan, has joined the company this year as a trainee.

Today, through outstanding service and a commitment to honest workmanship, the team comprises 10-15 employees, along with five self-employed contracting gangs. The company services the greater Wellington region including the Kapiti coast and the Wairarapa.

Jon's introduction to roofing was via a school holiday job with a plumbing and roofing firm, which sparked a strong interest in roofing.

After completing a commercial re-roof project, he then got a full-time job with ex-RANZ member Highline Roofing, working on larger commercial jobs in Wellington and working his way up the chain to become one of the lead foremen and the main membrane installer for the company.

After its formation in 2007, G&S Roofing grew 300 percent in its first two years and quickly embraced commercial opportunities. Now the company has a varied portfolio of work, with large contracts with organisations like Mega 10, Countdown, Pak n Save and its

largest contract to date, The Hub, in Seaview, Lower Hutt, which was for around 35,000m2 of roofing.

Another highlight of its portfolio was a residential build comprising a new roof and wall cladding – a job that featured in the Winter 2016 issue of RoofLink and on TV3’s Grand Designs New Zealand. The roof of the Northland, Wellington, home had a precipitous slope that the G&S team completed, even though normal accessibility was out of the question. The average slope of the site was 45° although in parts it was 60°.

Other challenges were the location on a narrow, one-way street, with no parking on site and no ability to store materials on site.

At the time Jon said the Ballara house was the most challenging contract the company had ever undertaken. Wind was another factor to contend with in the windy city, and Jon says there were also lots of access issues to be addressed, in particular, getting into tight spaces, which G&S has mastered through operating in both residential and commercial markets.

Along with a varied portfolio, G&S covers a diverse range of services in the industry including tanking, Butynol, torch on and asbestos removal. G&S has recently completed the upgrade to Metalcraft Roofing’s Wellington branch and MJH Engineering’s new workshop using New Zealand Steel’s COLORSTEEL® Dridex®, a product Jon values highly as it enables faster installation without the need to install

The company has great relationships with larger construction companies like Naylor Love, Hawkins and Armstrong Downs, and with award-winning home builders like David Reid, Helston Construction, Willie Davis Ltd and Navigation Homes.

The company has its own scaffolding system, which staff are trained to install, and has also invested in plant items such as scissor lifts.

G&S is qualified and licensed for asbestos removal and the team are also licenced applicators for membrane products from Ardex, Alco and Equus.

Training Jon has been a strong supporter of training initiatives and says training in the industry is a top priority for him.

“Skills is the largest training organisation in the country and its core purpose is to facilitate skill development. Historically, there has been a lack of training in our industry, and one of the things I’m keen to do is work with other companies in Wellington to ensure training is a priority.”

To demonstrate this commitment, G&S has enabled its premises in Seaview for Skills to conduct the theory day and practical assessments for the lower North Island in a functional environment.

says Jon. “We are keen to employ women and provide them with equal opportunities, and a great future out there awaits those willing to give roofing a go.

“Operations manager Amanda has worked for 10 years on the tools, running some of the bigger contracts for G&S, and gained her qualification in several strands, along with becoming a LBP. Now she is running all the teams and overseeing all our health and safety systems.”

In a quest to find the country’s best long-run metal roofers, G&S hosted a games event at its premises in Seaview. There was a great turnout of local talent, with many Wellington roofing companies participating and spectating. There was also a good representation from suppliers to the industry – New Zealand Steel, Metalcraft Wellington, Dimond Roofing, Brocklesby Roofing, Steel and Tube, to name a few.

Custodian of the pounamu At the RANZ 2019 Silver Anniversary Queenstown Conference, Liz Watson and Phillipa Kohatea offered the Executive a glimpse of the spirit of the next generation with a taonga to show their appreciation for support from RANZ – a piece of pounamu with shimmers of silver throughout the piece.

It had been blessed on the shores of Lake Wakatipu. The executive decided that the pounamu should become a wairua or spirit stone reflecting the symbolism of the RANZ conference and held by custodian members at subsequent conference locations.

G&S Roofing are the current custodians of the pounamu in Poneke, Wellington, where the next conference is scheduled for June 16-18, 2021.

Giving back to the community An important role for G&S Roofing has been its sponsorship at Fraser Park Sportsville, Lower Hutt’s largest recreational sports ground, where softball, cricket, hockey football and other sports are played. The company has also sponsored Awa Maori Girls League team over the last two years and is match sponsor for the Hurricanes’ Super Rugby Aotearoa home games. G & S also supports a special children’s Christmas party, Heart Kids and Child Safety Awareness yearly, and donated to the Christchurch mosque tragedy.

Privacy Law change With all the issues contractors have to consider in their day-to-day business, privacy obligations are probably not front of mind. However, they should not be overlooked. With the Privacy Act 2020 coming into force on 1 December of this year, it is a good time to consider whether your business is meeting its obligations.

You are likely to deal with personal information every day and at every stage of your contracts. This is not just limited to what you see and hear within the four walls of your office – just by being on site, or in peoples’ homes, you and your employees will be exposed to their personal information.

Once you have this information, you must have reasonable safeguards in place to prevent any loss, misuse, or disclosure. As the majority of our communications take place electronically, you should ensure that your communication and storage software is safe and secure. There are also limits on how this information can be used. Using personal information to fulfill your contractual obligations is unlikely to cause you problems.

For example, issuing a producer statement (which would state an owner’s address and possibly other supporting personal information) would not attract liability. On the other hand, personal information cannot be used for marketing or advertisement purposes, unless you have the individual’s express permission.

Personal information cannot be kept for longer than is necessary to fulfil the lawful purpose for which it is held. As contractors have on-going liability for the work they complete, some relevant personal information should be held onto once you have finished a project. This would likely

include contract documents, any information showing what work you completed, and correspondence relating to the main stages of the contract.

It is important to note that members often contract with head contractors, rather than directly with the owners. This means you cannot use your contracts to set out privacy obligations, or seek permission to use information for certain purposes.

If things do go wrong, the Privacy Act 2020 has introduced a regime for notifying privacy breaches. Under the new Act, if an agency has a privacy breach that causes serious harm, or is likely to do so, it must notify the Privacy Commissioner and the affected individuals as soon as reasonably practicable. If you do not notify the Privacy Commissioner of a breach, this could be a criminal offence and you may be liable for a fine of up to $10,000.

It is also important to note that, under the Act, personal information held by an employee, officer, or member of an agency, is taken as being held by the agency itself. Likewise, if one of your employees commits a notifiable privacy breach, the employer will often be held responsible.

Members should aim to create a culture of privacy within their businesses. It is important to ensure your internal processes and systems comply with your obligations. It is also

important to consider what training you give your employees about the things they see and hear while on the job.

This article is not a comprehensive run-down of all privacy obligations, but an outline of some of the main issues RANZ members should consider.

Glossary of terms The Privacy Act 2020 applies to all New Zealand agencies in relation to any actions they take in respect of personal information they hold or collect. Companies, organisations and individuals all come under this definition of ‘agency’. ‘Personal information’ is defined widely as ‘information about an identifiable individual’. The information does not have to refer to a person by name. It is sufficient if there is a reasonable chance that a person could be identified by the information. This could be a person’s address, for example.

Young at heart At the tender age of 67, Neil McCormack is quite possibly the oldest new roofer in the country.

Keith Ivey from CS Roofing tells us his story.

Keith first met Neil McCormack in the mid 1970s, when they both worked on the slaughter chains at the Alliance Freezing Works in Invercargill. He says that Neil eventually got sick of the freezing works and, ten years ago, approached him for a full-time position at CS Roofing.

Neil celebrated his tenth anniversary with the company on the 20th October 2020, just a month after receiving his Nat Cert in Metal Roofing and Wall Cladding on the 21st September 2020. He was first enrolled in 2014.

“At times, it has taken a bit of cajoling by Shaun Harris, the Operations Manager, and myself to get him across the line, but he has stuck with it and achieved his qualification, at the age of 67. So I am claiming to have the oldest apprentice in NZ. Can anyone beat that?” asks Neil. “Neil is a strong and fit roofer, who leads the younger guys by example, getting stuck into his work, and taking no ‘crap’. He is an asset to the business, and proof that age is no barrier to getting a qualification.”

Over the years Keith says his company has done a lot of re-roofing work at the Alliance Freezing works, so he always get Neil to lead the team on site, as he knows his way around the place so well.

Living in New Zealand comes with glorious sunshine and the great outdoors to enjoy. But on the downside, it also comes with the risks of getting skin cancer, such as melanoma. This risk is heightened for those who work outdoors all day, every day.

If you have olive or dark skin, it doesn’t mean you won’t get melanoma or other skin cancers. While those with darker skins, such as Maori and Pasifika, have a lower chance of getting melanoma, they often present with thicker, more serious melanomas by the time they get checked.

Did you know that Australia and New Zealand have the world’s highest rates of melanoma? It’s the most life-threatening form of skin cancer and astoundingly, around 13 New Zealanders are diagnosed with melanoma every day.

If your skin is darker, you may not need to get it checked as often – a MoleMap Skin Check every one to two years would be a good option for you.

There are a number of factors that can put some people at more risk of developing skin cancers. Having one or more of the following risk factors doesn’t mean you’ll definitely develop skin cancer, but it’s important to be aware of the dangers, so that you can take preventative measures.

Risk factor 1: Family history If one or more of your immediate relatives has had melanoma, your risk of developing it is higher. In fact, you’re twice as likely to develop melanoma if there’s a history of melanoma in your close family (parents, siblings or children). Another significant risk factor is your personal history: if you’ve had melanoma once, you have a higher risk – as much as nine times higher – of getting melanoma again.

Risk factor 2: Your skin and hair colour As anyone with pale skin knows, those with fairer skin are more susceptible to sunburn and have a higher risk of developing skin cancers. The Fitzpatrick scale is made up of six skin types that help determine your skin cancer risk. Types 1 and 2 refer to ivory or very fair skin, with naturally blonde or red hair, and light coloured eyes. People with these types of skin have a higher risk of sun damage and likelihood of developing all types of skin cancers, including melanoma.

If you have fair, ivory or freckly skin – and especially if you’ve been sunburnt a few times, it’s a good idea to have a regular Full Body MoleMap for peace of mind.

Risk factor 3: Your age Over 50? The bad news is that you’re in the age group that has a higher risk of all types of skin cancer. Around 70 percent of melanoma cases occur in people aged 50 years and older. Not only that, most nonmelanoma skin cancer (such as basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma) typically appears after age 50.

So, if you are over 50 and notice any unusual or changing moles or sunspots (see what to look for), get it checked by your GP or MoleMap as soon as possible.

Again, while age increases your risk factor, being under 50 doesn’t mean you shouldn’t worry about getting melanoma, it’ just less common.

However, young people are at risk, too.

Risk factor 4: You have lots of moles A mole (or nevus) is a non-cancerous, pigmented tumour. They often appear in children and young adults, and are generally of no concern.

But for people who have a number of moles, the risk of developing melanoma is higher – up to seven times more – if you have more than 100 moles. If you have a number of moles, a quick once-over from your GP may not be thorough enough. It pays to have them checked by a specialist skin cancer detection service every year.

Risk factor 5: You have unusual moles Unusual or atypical moles have some similar features to melanoma.

They’re often larger and may have an odd shape or colour – sometimes called ‘the ugly duckling’ as they look quite different to your other

moles. For people that have more than five unusual moles, the risk of melanoma is six times higher. If this sounds like you, or someone you know, check out the ADBCE guide to spotting melanoma, so you know what signs to look for.

Risk factor 6: You’ve been sunburnt Getting sunburnt at any age – whether as a child, teen or adult – increases the risk of all skin cancers, including melanoma, in later life.

Sunburn is sun damage, so if you’re out in the sun, especially during the summer months, follow these protective tips, and above all, try to avoid getting sunburnt. And if you have children, keep them covered up or in the shade. Research shows that sun exposure in childhood gives a greater risk of melanoma than sun exposure in later life.

Risk factor 7: You have an outdoors lifestyle, or regularly work outside If your skin is exposed to the sun regularly through work or play, this can increase your risk of skin cancers, such as basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.

In the case of melanoma, recent studies show that there’s a greater risk from occasional high doses of sun exposure, such as during holidays, weekends and recreational activities, than with more continuous sun exposure like working outdoors regularly. Whenever you’re outdoors, make sure you protect your skin in the sun and stay in the shade whenever possible.

How can you reduce your skin cancer risk?

Whether you’re high, medium or low risk (take our quick risk check to find out), it’s important to be really vigilant about both protecting and checking your skin.

Early detection is the best protection, so get to know your skin and moles, and check them at least every three months for any changes.

If you have any concerns, make an appointment with your doctor straight away, and see a skin cancer detection specialist such as MoleMap every year.

Pride comes before a fall It may be an old-fashioned adage, but when you relate it to safety in the roofing industry, it is always relevant.

Safety processes in the roofing industry have come a long way since I joined the industry 10 years ago. There has been a significant improvement in the plant that is used on site – Elevated work platforms, edge protection, scaffold, safety nets… the list goes on.

However, all that accounts for nothing if the attitudes and culture of the people involved in a building project reflects a “she’ll be right”, or an “it won’t happen to me” thought process.

Whether in the commercial or residential building sector, the risks are all the same for those who work at height. We all know that a fall from height can be catastrophic for everyone involved. One way to help prevent this from happening is to ensure that everyone involved has a self-preservation attitude.

I encourage all those who work with us at CS Roofing Canterbury to be self-centred. I know that you are probably thinking that this is a strange thing to say, but I will explain why… I can provide policies and procedures to people, but I need them to believe that their safety really does come down to a personal level, and their desire to not get injured.

If when planning work for the day, an individual worker is thinking about plans for the weekend and looking forward to spending time with friends and family, then it would stand to reason that somewhere in the thought process they are thinking, what do I need to do today to make sure that I’m going to make it safely to the weekend? What do I need to do for my own self-preservation? The flow on effect of this is, when they are involved in the daily planning meeting on site, they are already thinking about their own safety and then that of the team and any other workers on site.

Progressive work culture and positive attitudes from every member of the team, whether on site or in the planning office, will always play a part in the safety of our people.

Site safety is both a team and personal journey. It is up to everyone to make sure that they don’t let their pride get in the way of their or someone else’s safety.

I have seen a significant change in attitudes over the past 10 years, and it is pleasing to see that the Kiwi “she’ll be right” attitude is decreasing. However, I’m not so naive as to think that it does not exist. The challenge for us all is to ensure that we are not the ones riding high on our own pride and putting others and ourselves at risk.

We all have limitations in our knowledge, and still have plenty of things to learn about construction safety, which is improving and

Getting in step Climate change. The legislation is rolling out and there are things we can do now to respond and adapt well.

Foreword from Graham Moor, CEO RANZ: Climate Change elicits many responses, from enthusiasm to eye rolling. The Climate Change Response Amendment Act 2019, also known as the Zero Carbon Act, is here and the intentions of the Act will certainly impact buildings and how a building functions across its whole life cycle.

Simply put, energy efficiency and carbon costs are factored considerations. The recyclability/ repurposing of a building and a building’s components are all considered. Ventilation, improving a building’s temperature, reducing water usage, measuring the carbon content of building products and waste generation (at build time) are all in the mix as well.

Factoring these items will take sophisticated calculations and I am aware of concerns about creating fairness. If it becomes too hard and no longer viable to make a product here, is it acceptable to let the carbon footprint be in another country to be the same or higher? How does that help the global ambitions of Zero Carbon?

There is some smart stuff happening in our industry, which goes some way to achieving better outcomes. Warm roofs, both new and reroofs, being such examples. Not just metal reroofs, but membrane roofs being overlaid with improved insulation and more modern membranes, as an example.

The other challenge we have is how we get building owners to spend more upfront for these solutions, when we know we will end up with better outcomes, environmentally and economically, over the lifecycle of the building.

We can’t ignore this Act, as it will be embodied in our work. There is much to do and lots to understand, but it is here to stay.

Preparing for climate change

By Dr Casimir MacGregor The Government is moving to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prepare for a low-carbon economy. Eventually, this will mean transforming building regulations, but for now, designers and builders can take steps to prepare.

In July this year the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), which is responsible for the Building Act 2004, announced the beginning of a work programme called Building for climate change. This will transform the building and construction sector to reduce emissions and improve the climate resilience of buildings.

Building for climate change The passing of the Climate Change Response (Zero Carbon) Amendment Act 2019, also known as the Zero Carbon Act, provides a framework by which New Zealand can develop and implement clear and stable climate change policies. These will: • Contribute to the global effort under the Paris Agreement to limit the global average temperature increase to 1.5°C above preindustrial levels • Allow New Zealand to prepare for and adapt to the effects of climate change.

• Establish a new independent Climate Change Commission to provide expert advice and monitoring to help keep successive governments on track to meeting long-term goals.

Building for climate change – vision and goals MBIE’s Building for climate change programme vision is that, by 2050, New Zealand’s buildings are: • More resource efficient, using little energy and less water • Healthier by being warmer, drier and better ventilated and provide wellbeing to occupants.

Other aims include that: • Infrastructure is more resilient to the demands of climate change • Energy efficiency and carbon cost are core considerations through the building and construction process and life of the building • Expertise, knowledge and competencies within industry and among occupants are transformed so that climate change literacy, energy efficiency and skills such as energy and carbon modelling are an integral part of the sector • The public knows how to get energyefficient and low-emissions buildings

The Zero Carbon Act seeks to set a new domestic greenhouse gas emissions reduction target for New Zealand to:

• Re-using buildings and recycling materials to enable a circular economy supported through local supply chains becomes commonplace.

• Reduce net emissions of all greenhouse gases (except biogenic methane) to zero by 2050

Two core goals of the Building for climate change programme of work are to:

• Establish a system of emissions budgets to act as stepping stones towards the long-term target • Require the government to develop and implement policies for climate change adaptation and mitigation

•

Reduce emissions

• Improve buildings’ resilience to climate change.

To achieve these goals, there are two areas of focus – climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Climate change mitigation Building for climate change seeks to improve the operational efficiency of buildings to reduce energy and water use and to improve ventilation and building temperatures.

Improved efficiency will lead to a lower carbon footprint for buildings. Another key focus is to reduce the whole-of-life embodied carbon footprint of a building from construction materials and the construction process as well as the waste and demolition of the building at the end of its life.

Adaptation to the impact of climate change will focus on improving the ability of buildings to withstand future climate change events, such as rising sea levels, rising temperatures, increased storms, flooding and wildfires.

MBIE is launching a public consultation on the Whole-of-Life Embodied Carbon Emissions Reduction Framework and the Transforming Operational Efficiency Framework (visit www.mbie.govt.nz).

Regulatory changes will be needed While climate change and the transition to a net-zero carbon economy presents a fundamental change to how we think about and construct buildings, it will also mean changes within the building regulatory system.

Some of these changes will be small and others larger. However, there are several

things industry can do now to assist in the transformation: •

Increase carbon literacy.

• Develop expertise, knowledge and competencies in designing, building and refurbishing zero-carbon buildings.

• Adapt international best practice for energy-efficient buildings and lowembodied-carbon buildings.

• Understand the energy efficiency and carbon footprint of the buildings you design and construct.

• Consider what will happen to the building at the end of the design life.

• Consider designing out construction waste.

• Start separating and reducing construction waste, and look for opportunities for construction waste to get reused or recycled.

• Start exploring and making use of energy and carbon modelling tools and techniques.

• Have an independent assessment of the energy efficiency and/or embodied carbon in a building’s design.

• Consider voluntary reporting and disclosure of the energy efficiency and carbon footprint of your projects.

BRANZ mapped research and regulations The BRANZ Transition to a Zero-Carbon Built Environment programme assisted MBIE with the development of the Building for Climate Change programme. This was done by undertaking a systematic mapping review of national and international research and regulatory responses to the role of building in mitigating and adapting to climate change.

The work highlighted the fact that we cannot cherry-pick solutions from Europe and other places across the world and must adapt solutions to meet New Zealand’s emission profile.

It also highlighted that there are many knowledge and regulatory gaps in creating New Zealand-based solutions to address climate change mitigation and adaptation.

For example, embodied carbon accounting at design is still in development, and provisions for the protection of buildings from bushfires are not addressed in the existing Building Act. Much research needs to be undertaken to help ensure evidence-based policy and to provide practical solutions for industry.

Three soft skills to master Communication, relationship building, and conflict resolution are the hidden skills that will often make you stand out from the competition.

Through our years working across a range of industries, the team here at Skills has learnt that it doesn’t matter what line of work you’re in, you need soft skills to be successful on the job. Technical skills are, of course, necessary in any job. Whether you’re an electrician, a real estate agent or an accountant, you need specialist skills, an understanding of the laws surrounding your field and, in some cases, to be licensed or registered.

Assuming you have those technical skills, what’s the difference between you and the next person, who, presumably has the same set of expertise? What makes customers or employers choose to work with you over someone else?

It’s the soft skills like communication, relationship building, and conflict resolution that make the difference. Unlike technical skills, though, it’s not so easy to know which ones are the most important, so we’ve broken down three of the most sought-after soft skills.

Communication Being able to get a message across clearly, without any misinterpretation, is important in any role, which is why communication is at the top of the list of must-have soft skills.

Today, with most of our communication happening online, it’s much harder to read body language cues, like smiles and crossed arms (even during video calls). So what you say and how you say it is more important than ever before. Here are some tips for good communication: • Keep it concise. Deliver your message with clarity and impact – less is more.

This ensures your reader/listener is more likely to understand what you’re saying and remember it later.

• Signpost your key points. When you have important things to say, make it clear what they are at the start of your conversation, or bold it in written text.

This way, your listener/reader will know what to look out for.

• Talk to, not at the other person. Unless you’re giving a presentation, a conversation should involve a bit of back-and-forth. Pausing to give others an opportunity to speak, clarify and ask questions will help keep the conversation on track and ensure you’re on the same page and that each person feels heard.

Relationship building It doesn’t matter what industry you’re in – whether you’re a tradie, a banker, or a government regulator, having good relationships with others is key to producing positive outcomes on any project. Here are some tips to help build rapport: • The little things count. Asking about someone’s family, other projects they’re working on, and showing an interest in them personally can go a long way in building rapport. When people feel listened to and respected, projects run more smoothly, there’s less conflict, and communication is more open.

• Master the art of collaboration. When you work with others, you’ll often have different ideas and opinions. While this can be challenging, different perspectives can help push the boundaries and deliver outstanding results. So, it pays to be open to and respect others’ ideas, as well as putting forward your own.

Conflict resolution Disagreements are an inevitable part of working with other people, so learning how to effectively manage them is a skill that will carry you through your career. Using these techniques will help you to better resolve conflict: • Practice patience. The way you act has an impact on others. Make a conscious effort to put your own opinions and needs on pause and focus on what the other person is saying. This will help take the heat out of the conflict. By being patient, you’ll find a resolution more easily.

• Use “I” statements. Instead of using “you” statements – blaming and accusing another person – using “I” statements allows you to express your opinions and feelings without stirring up defensiveness or resentment in others. To do this, explain your own feelings about a situation without laying blame. An example is: “I noticed that I didn’t receive that report on Monday and I’m worried that we might be falling behind on our project.” Instead of “You are causing us to fall behind on our project because you didn’t submit that report on time.”

• Be willing to compromise. Sometimes the best way to move on from conflict is to find a middle ground between what you and another person want. The better you are at letting go of attachment to your opinions, the easier it will be to find a compromise.

Taking the time to build up your soft skills is worth its weight in gold. These skills can help improve the relationships you have with your team and clients and are also highly appealing to potential employers. www.skills.org.nz Issue 95 • Summer 2020

Q Where are you based?

A Glen Eden, West Auckland, servicing from Omaha to Papakura – and further afield. I have just recently travelled down south to Queenstown to do a job (great road trip!).

Q Favourite products/brand? Why? A Leister welding tools: automated lap sealing, efficiency and consistency.

Q Years in roofing?

A Since 2008, so around 12 years.

De Walt power tools: I just enjoy their range, and probably ‘cos that’s all I’ve ever bought.

Q How did you get started in roofing?

A I started off as a tiler and waterproofing bathrooms. My boss at the time decided to get into waterproofing, so we switched to waterproofing roofs, decks and basements, and it went from there.

Q Family nucleus?

A I had to Google ‘nucleus’ :-) My very motivated significant other half, Kathy, and our 15-year-old son. We also have two boys from Japan (also 15 and 16) – all are passionate about rugby, and go to St Peters College. We also have many exotic birds at home, which keep the place lively.

A Something to do, someone to love, something to look forward to.

Q What do you do day to day?

A Apart from eat, sleep, work, and pay bills – I enjoy each day’s challenges, facing the day with a positive can-do attitude. I work on improving myself, encouraging and helping others, and providing superior waterproofing solutions. I just enjoy living as often as possible, while striving towards achieving life goals.
