The ‘Top of the South’ showed us one of the best yet by many accounts for this year’s conference in sunny Whakatū, Nelson.

There’s an in-depth article from one of the keynote speakers included in this edition: Luke Kemeys, who gives relevant financial guidance in a relatable, practical way (see p32). Further, follow-up articles from conference speakers will be included in the next issue of RoofLink®.

At a time when we have so many complex challenges, both on the table and ahead of us, I really hope that over the next few months, our politicians will handle things as ‘constructively’ as they possibly can, whatever the election’s outcome. It was great to see the integration and positive collaboration of sector leadership highlighted at conference.

Naylor Love’s CEO Rick Herd was followed by Graham Burke – both highly involved in the Construction Accord and sharing similar positive and inspiring visions and aspirations for the sector, and demonstrating the work they both have underway to get there.

Notably, Burke also drew a comparison to the vision of the Construction Accord and the parallels to the fresh RANZ mission in his address – something that RANZ President and Vice-President presented on the Friday at conference, too:

CEO Spring 2023 Going to sunny Nelson for Conference was a great choice. The weather was great, and the turnout exceeded expectations—a big thank you to all who attended. Certainly, the business owners in Nelson loved having all these roofers in town, with plenty of our business partners taking the opportunity to network with their customers.

I have copied this from a thank-you email we received, which sums up our Nelson efforts very well: I wanted to extend my thanks for the hospitality shown at the RANZ Conference last week. It was an excellent, well-supported event, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The selection of speakers was outstanding.

Each presenter brought a point of difference and expertise to their respective topics, providing a variety of valuable insights as well as good industry updates. I found the sessions insightful and thought-provoking, leaving me with new perspectives. Kendra [Cocksedge] was my absolute highlight!

The trade show offered opportunities to connect with others, as well as an excellent dinner event and prize giving. I really enjoyed

the ‘Battle of the Roofs’, which was made even better by one of our own apprentices winning his competition.

Lastly, the general positive vibe felt across the two days was awesome! Nelson was certainly ‘The Place to Be!’ The comment about the positive vibe resonates for me; that we are positive is what makes the difference as we work through all that our industry offers us – the good and the challenging.

There is no doubt economic headwinds are coming. The cause is not the issue. It is how you decide to negotiate and position both yourselves and your businesses is what your focus should be. What won’t help is bidding work with unsustainable margins. You all have different cost structures in your businesses, which must be applied with sufficient margin to sustain and grow your business. Luke Kemeys has a great article on page 32 of this Rooflink®.

Razor-thin margins left them unable to meet liabilities and chewed up working capital. I remember talking with members at the time that the failure surprised most of them as they had been paid the previous month, and then, boom, over they went – a perfect example of the flaws the tender process can cause. The liquidator involved made the comment, ‘robbing Peter to pay Paul’!

Make sure you do your due diligence on your customers. Credit reports are a great tool. If they are slipping in their credit terms before you bid, do you want that work based on what you’re seeing? Your call, but be careful.

RANZ Consumer Guide to Re-Roofing For the many RANZ members who complete re-roofing work to the highest of standards, it is understandably frustrating to hear about poor performers in the sector. Alongside advocacy and training support, RANZ believes that consumer awareness and understanding via education can decrease the number of below-standard re-roofing outcomes across New Zealand.

In response, we have published a comprehensive article on ‘re-roofing for consumers’ on pages 34-35 of this issue of RoofLink, which aims to establish expectations and transparency for a successful re-roofing job of a high standard. This ‘guide’ is also available on the RANZ website.

A Toast to the Host Amongst the many supplier events held on the eve of this year’s RANZ Conference, Freeman Roofing’s event added to the mid-week buzz in Nelson. With their headquarters in Nelson, Freeman Roofing put on drinks and delicious food for a packed-out roofing crowd at ‘The Vic’.

‘Coming to the party’ as bronze sponsors, the team at Freeman Roofing showed the RANZ Conference extra support by helping Max Brough and Noel Sands with the roofing module for the Live Roofing Battle for the Metal Roofer of the Year award, kindly supplying the materials and assisting with transport logistics – thank you!

CCA Update on Retentions The recent developments to the CCA will be coming into force soon. From October 5th, main contractors that DO NOT comply with the requirements of handling YOUR retention money could face significant penalties.

Roofer Ingenuity RANZ Executive Mark Bishop recently encountered this creative use of scrap by a roofing apprentice. "One of the apprentice trainees here in Palmy got creative when he needed a new tonneau cover for his ute. He had some leftover trapezoidal, which he cut and shaped to fit the tray. Then he fastened it down using, what else, but 25mm timber TEK screws. It is secure, waterproof, practical and the price was right."

GASFITTING ADVICE

Major Incident Response: Gasfitter Licensing Authority Advice and Product Solutions Serious incident follow-up advice from the NZ Gasfitters’ licensing authority and product solutions from our member network.

RANZ are aware of serious instances recently where roofers have worked on gas appliances when re-roofing houses that have caused harm to the home occupiers. To be clear, apart from everyday use, touching any part of a gas appliance is against the law and can be dangerous.

Find a licensed gasfitter: www2.pgdb.co.nz/public-register As this is part of a current WorkSafe investigation, we cannot give further details. WorkSafe is investigating, as the consequences are very serious. These incidents would not have occurred if a Registered Licensed Gasfitter had been employed to do the work and conducted the correct tests. Certainly, the roofers involved would not be responding to WorkSafe enquiries.

If your re-roofing work requires contact with gas systems, you are required by law, and for your health and safety practice and liability management, to get a Registered Licensed Gasfitter to make adjustments needed AND TEST the adjustments completed. This MUST be done every time.

As usual, elimination is the best option from a health and safety perspective. To eliminate touching the working parts of a gas appliance when re-roofing, use a flashing method that eliminates any disassembly of the gas appliance.

Flue Cowl Removal/Disassembly and Testing Advice from Licensing Authority PGDB Please refer to the advice released from the licensing authority for gasfitters in New Zealand in response to recent serious incidents.

The Board is aware of a recent incident where a flue cowl of a gas appliance was interfered with during roofing work, ultimately leading to a case of carbon monoxide poisoning. To keep the public safe, the Board advises the following guidance when working with flue cowls: Guidance on removal of flue cowls/terminals The removal of the flue cowl on a gas appliance must be done by a licensed gasfitter. A gasfitting certificate must then be issued by a licensed certifying gasfitter.

The flue cowl is essential, as it affects the flow of air and combustion products. This directly correlates to how well an appliance works, as it affects combustion conditions inside the appliance. Further, incorrect removal (or installation) of a flue cowl can cause damage to the connected gas flue or appliance, risking leaks.

We often think the biggest risks associated with gasfitting relate to fire and explosions. However, the public is also at risk of injuries due to excess carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2) from inadequate or incorrectly installed flueing and/or ventilation.

Where appropriate, gasfitters should test levels of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide in the dwelling to ensure adequate ventilation.

Following all maintenance work, including reinstalling a flue cowl, gasfitters must always re-commission the appliance per the manufacturer’s instructions.

• AS/NZS 5601.1:2013 clause 2.2.8 requires commissioning (note a 2022 version of the standard is out, but 2013 is still the cited version).

• AS/NZS 5601.1:2013 clause 6.11.4 outlines what commissioning shall include.

These solutions allow you to wrap the flashing around the flue without disassembly or needing a licensed gasfitter. Master Plumbers advises that this is acceptable practice.

We also recommend that you advise your clients to have the appliance checked before they use the gas appliance again immediately after the re-roof is complete. Many of you tag your quotes for work involving satellite dishes to get a technician to realign afterwards. Likewise, we ask that you advise your client to confirm that they will get the gas appliance checked.

This guidance is aligned with the advice from the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board (PGDB) - the licensing and certifying authority for Licensed Registered Gasfitters. See further advice and details in the following section here for you below.

Where a gas appliance does not have the manufacturer’s instructions on commissioning or the manufacturer’s instructions, do not include commissioning details. AS/NZS 5601.1:2013 Appendix O provides guidelines for commissioning.

For a sealed appliance, always check all seals of the appliance and ensure there is no spillage of products of combustion into the dwelling.

RANZ Conference 2023 Trafalgar Centre – Whakatū Nelson

Nelson lived up to its reputation as the sunshine capital of New Zealand as it welcomed the roofing fraternity to its sun-kissed shores for the 29th RANZ Conference. The sight of Farewell Spit coming into view as we flew into blue skies from a stormy Auckland was a welcome relief from what has been a forgettable summer up north.

Our base for the next few days is the Rutherford Hotel, where the first item on the agenda will take place soon after we land – the RANZ AGM. Shortly after the votes are cast, and the Executive instated for another year, I catch up with Graham Moor for his thoughts on the two days ahead.

It comes as no surprise that Grahams says it’s been a tough year for the sector, particularly when it comes to its people. We need to look after the people we’ve got, he says. We also need to fight for new people in a very tight marketplace. Rick Herd will set the scene for the conference tomorrow. It will be good to have a straight-talker from the construction industry – outside of our sector – who will be able to give us a no-fuss oversight of where we are.

From the north himself, Graham says some parts of the country have had it extra tough this past year with the adverse weather conditions. We’re roofers, he says. We signed up to work outside in all weather, but some of the conditions that have been thrown at us,

particularly up north and in Auckland and on the East Coast, have been horrendous. It puts a lot of pressure at all levels of business, from the guys on the tools to the business owners trying to juggle and manage the workloads.

Looking forward to the next 12 months, beyond October’s general election, Graham says that ‘people’ will continue to be the driving theme at the centre of the roofing sector. We will need to train our way out of this, he says; a mantra RANZ has been preaching for several years now.

Day One The Trafalgar Centre, an easy 10-minute walk from the Rutherford, is the perfect venue for our conference – just the right size to accommodate the 300+ delegates and associated trade expo, all in one large space.

Conference is opened by members of the local Iwi, who give a traditional mihi in Te Reo and English before handing the mic over to radio and television presenter Mel Homer, who will be our MC for the next two days.

Rick Herd, Naylor Love To open, we have Naylor Love’s CEO, Rick Herd, a local who says he’s proud to be standing here in front of us this morning. Rick is a successful businessman with almost 50 years of experience in the New Zealand construction industry. Under Rick’s tenure, Naylor Love has risen to be the country’s largest privately owned construction company and arguably with the strongest reputation amongst employees and client organisations.

“I have a vision for the construction industry,” he announces. “It’s based on sustainability and high levels of well-being and health and safety for our people, good career growth, and low levels of company failures.”

Before touching on some of the domestic issues facing the country, Rick says that the biggest challenge ahead for all of us was climate change and that we need to act now: “We need to start building like they do in the Pacific – larger gutters and cyclone-proof roofs,” he says.

social divide worries him – and that all [political] parties were guilty [of allowing it to happen]. Surprisingly, even though he ‘wears blue’, he’s also a fan of the Capital Gains Tax – “Both governments need to be brave enough to announce it and bring it in.

Not a Wealth Tax, though.”

Turning to the construction sector, he says we all need to improve inefficiencies – “We are fragmented as an industry. I want to see consolidation: Processes, health-and-safetywise, environmentally, diversity.”

After a thought-provoking, straight-talking 45 minutes, Rick steps down from the podium.

The stage and the themes have been set for the next two days. More insight from him will be included in an article in a future RoofLink edition.

Graham Burke, Construction Sector Accord Next up, Graham Burke, People Transformation Lead for the Construction Sector Accord.

Graham has worked in the construction industry since 1983, is passionate about its

future, and is committed to leading further change. He says he is adamant the way forward for the construction sector and businesses is to move the emphasis from bottom price to value, safety and quality. His opening slide above his head outlines his vision – A thriving, fair and sustainable construction sector for a better Aotearoa, New Zealand. He highlights the connection to the fresh RANZ mission: Delivering a highperforming roofing industry that protects New Zealand’s most important assets.

Graham’s presentation follows closely in Rick Herd’s footsteps, mirroring the industry’s challenges and what needs to be done to head off the pressing issues. In his update, Graham outlines and explains the five main areas of focus of the Accord – People, Clients, Environment, Innovation, Emerging issues & Opportunities – then opens up to the audience for questions via the conference App. The questions come thick and fast: How can a business get assistance from the Accord to build a better business, asks Eddie Tell; What’s been the Accord’s biggest

achievement over the past two years, and how has it benefitted the industry? asks Braeden Burne; How can we encourage diversity in construction, asks Victoria Elvin.

Ding, ding… morning tea! And it’s the first chance for the delegates to have a wander through the large trade expo that has been set up just behind the main auditorium.

Having the sessions and the expo right next to each other was fantastic, as it allowed people to move quickly and easily between the two areas. It was a great set-up.

Government, NZ Steel plans to invest $300m in a new furnace that will reduce the company’s annual emissions by 45% – equivalent of the entire country by 1% – which is a fair whack.

You can read the full details of this initiative in the Winter issue of Rooflink.

This is a great initiative that will help address the demand from architects, group homebuilders and homeowners for more sustainable metal roofing products and materials. The furnace will also utilise and recycle the scrap metal that is currently having to be sent overseas for processing.

Another busy Q&A session followed, with many questions about the new electric arc furnace from the audience.

Peter Degerholm, Contracts & CCA Peter Degerholm has been a regular face at RANZ Conference in recent years. Peter has extensive experience in quantity surveying, management and dispute resolution in the NZ building industry, and his particular area of expertise is in the Construction Contracts Act (CCA). His talk today is about sustainability of a different kind.

He says that environmental sustainability is essential for our survival, but economic sustainability is vital for our businesses – and that means getting paid and paid on time.

Peter is informative, measured, and a mine of information regarding the CCA. He cannot emphasise strongly enough the importance of using Payment Claims under the Act. With so many business owners in the audience, this was an important session to attend, and the Q&A session that followed was gold for those present. More resources for members on the CCA are set to be released in the coming months – stay tuned.

Luke Kemeys, Financial Guidance Following a delicious buffet lunch, which deserves a shout-out to the caterers, we were back in the main auditorium for some financial advice from award-winning Chartered Accountant Luke Kemeys from nextAdvisory, a down-to-earth practice which helps aspirational business owners achieve their goals.

Understanding and staying on top of money matters can be a stretch for many smallbusiness owners at the best of times, but Luke’s relatable language is a breath of fresh air, and his laid-back approach hits a welcome nerve with many in the room. A detailed report on Luke’s presentation can be found on page 32 – and is well worth a read.

Rafael Caso & Matt Vaughn, Health & Safety Health and safety is the next topic on the agenda for Conference. In association with CHASNZ, the Live Well Build Well programme lead Rafael Caso and Corporate Health coach Matt Vaughn, founder of MV Corporate Health, share their insights and practical guidance on making gains in health and safety culture. Matt has a particularly important message around sleep and how essential it is to our everyday well-being – Poor Sleep, Poor Recovery, Poor You – is one of his takeaway messages.

Sean Brandon, Rod Newbold & Ronald Rose, Technical Panel Next, and back by popular demand after his jam-packed sessions at last year’s conference in Christchurch, is Sean Brandon from Roof Design and Management, with his slideshow

on Common Roofing Problems. He shows us some horrendous pics of botched roofs and shares a selection of hilarious texts received from ‘roofers’ in response to his reports. Sean is joined on stage for the Technical Panel session by Rod Newbold NZ Metal Roofing Manufacturers and Ronald Rose from ARDEX, who talk about the new H1 changes – an interesting and helpful session to end the first day of this year’s conference.

But it isn’t over… Back at the Rutherford Hotel, proceedings are just getting underway for the inaugural Roofing Skills Battle. For a full report and pictures of the event, turn to page 16.

RANZ Gala Awards Night Fast-forward a couple of hours, and everyone has had a quick shower, donned their glad rags, and is massing in the hotel foyer for pre-dinner drinks and nibbles. It is a large gathering, and a buzz is in the air as we file into the ballroom for the Gala Dinner & RANZ Awards 2023.

Mel Homer is our MC for the evening. She brings the room to order before introducing the familiar face of comedian Darran Lees, who rips through part one of an expletiveladen set at pace, taking aim at some of his former cohorts in the audience. It’s a mixture of head-down cringe and laugh-out-loud one-liners. Not for the faint-hearted!

With Darran locked away for the next hour, it is now safe to bring Mel back out on stage to introduce the ‘serious’ part of the evening’s celebration – the 2023 RANZ Awards.

Day Two We love day two of Conference. Why? Because it kicks off with the COLORSTEEL® breakfast and the NZ Women in Roofing seminar – always a highly anticipated, must-attend session featuring a truly inspirational speaker.

And this year was no different.

Kendra Cocksedge, Black Ferns Originally from New Plymouth, Kendra Cocksedge is very much a Cantabrian when it comes to her rugby; but the whole country is happy to claim her as one of the leading players in the world game. Since debuting for

the Black Ferns as a teenager in 2007, Cocksedge has gone on to win three Rugby World Cups, as well as clinching a Rugby World Cup Sevens crown in 2013, playing three tournaments in all for the Black Ferns Sevens. Last year, following the team’s last-gasp 34-31 victory over England in the Rugby World Cup final, she retired from test rugby as the most-capped Black Fern of all time. Who better to talk to her about her dazzling career than ardent English rugby fan Darran Lees… now who’s laughing, Darran :-) Cocksedge is entertaining from start to finish.

The story of her drive and determination to wear the ‘fern’ is genuinely inspirational, ‘as she wasn’t the biggest flower’, as she puts it.

As you’d expect, there are some great anecdotes along the way – warming up in front of a crowd of 80,000 at Twickenham, that World Cup game in Auckland, and leading the Haka in her final game for New Zealand in Christchurch.

Even though she has retired from the field, Cocksedge is still heavily involved in the game – she has a full-time role as the South Island Participation Manager for Rugby NZ. One of the questions from the audience is, what are the challenges facing the women’s game right now? Cocksedge says there need to be more international tests, women’s rugby in the provinces must be put at the forefront, and the women’s game needs more commercial backing.

Cocksedge packed a lot into her 45 minutes on stage, and she left us feeling that we got to know this sporting legend just a little better.

Jenny Maxwell & Paul Stanley-Boden, RANZ Strategy Update OK, back to the business of roofing, as Jenny Maxwell and Paul Stanley-Boden take to the podium with their presentation outlining the

progress of RANZ’s five-year strategic plan, which was announced at last year’s conference in Christchurch. Jenny does most of the talking, saying it was important that we (the Executive) seek guidance from you, the members. There are many slides showing lots of goals, followed by a robust, constructive Q&A session.

Maddy & Nate, Mates in Construction Up until recently, talking about suicide or mental health was a taboo topic, especially on construction sites. The old ‘harden up and take a concrete pill’ attitude got most of us through… or not in some cases.

Mates In Construction is a mental health charity with one simple aim – to reduce the number of lives lost to suicide in the construction industry. On stage today, two of the team from Mates in Construction – Maddy and Nate – stand up and share some confronting and uncomfortable facts and statistics about suicide and mental health.

Did you know that we are six times more likely to lose a work colleague to suicide than a workplace accident? And that we are losing one person per week to suicide in the construction sector – 98% of which are men?

This is an uncomfortable session to sit through – but at the same time, uplifting to know that there is an organisation out there like Mates in Construction, which is bringing awareness to the issue and doing its bit to help those in need.

representatives from Vertical Horizonz (VHNZ), Industry Connection for Excellence (ICE) and Waihanga Ara Rau. The overall theme is that we need to ‘grow our own trees’. We need to train ourselves out of this skills shortage, which brought us full circle to where Rick Herd began his talk yesterday morning. And on that note, we end the formalities of this year’s RANZ Conference. All that is left now is to welcome our guest celebrity speaker, adopted ‘mother of the nation’ Hilary Barry, to close proceedings.

Hilary Barry As you’d expect, it is a giggle-a-minute with Hilary as she takes us through her career, starting as a young journo driving around the Wairarapa in a clapped-out Vauxhall Viva, working for Paul Henry, to globetrotting around the world covering iconic events such as Kate and William’s wedding and the death of Nelson Mandela. And more recently, her time on Seven Sharp with her cohost Jeremy Wells, laughing with us all the way. “I love that my name means cheerful,” she smiles.

On a slightly more serious note, Hilary touches on how she deals with criticism – because she gets quite a lot from the general public, especially if she happens to be wearing an off-the-shoulder-number on air. “Ignore them.

Don’t give them the power. Choose who you give your power to and who you listen to.”

Sound advice we can all use.

That’s it. It’s a wrap. Another fantastic conference, packed with valuable takeaways for delegates to share with their colleagues and workmates at Monday morning Smoko or whatever meetings they have next week. The last big news from RANZ is that Conference will be held offshore next year! Where? Watch this space.

Battle for the best A new event at this year’s conference, the Roofing Skills Battle is a hands-on, headto-head test fought out between four of the country’s top roofers to determine who would be crowned the ultimate metal roofer and membrane roofer for 2023.

The battle lines were drawn for the inaugural Roofing Skills challenge. On one side of the courtyard at the Rutherford Hotel in downtown Nelson, we had Ben Clisby from ProTech Roofing squaring off against Nathan Leslie from Dunedin-based Top Notch for the metal-roofing title. On the other, the membrane-roofing title would be fought out between Harvinder Singh from Superior Waterproofing and Brendan O’Brien from JDS Roofing.

Officiating the proceedings were the ‘Mambo Twins’, aka Paul Stanley-Boden and Mark Bishop, who, incidentally, had each devised the two skills modules the roofers were about to undertake. Each compact module was designed to test the techniques and abilities of the four roofers thoroughly. They had two hours, give or take, to complete their task.

The pace was frantic from the get-go. Humour was in plentiful supply, as was the banter and the advice from the gathering audience. Sadly daylight wasn’t. As the battle went on, out came the iPhones and on came the torches. Although the light dimmed, the tempo cracked on at a blistering pace.

Ultimately, it was a close-run race for both titles, with Nathan Leslie taking the Metal-Roofing crown and Harvinder Singh just edging out Brendon O’Brien for the Membrane Roofing trophy.

Roofing Excellence Award 2023 There was widespread approval when it was announced that Shaun Harris from CS Roofing Southland was to receive the biennial Stuart Thomson Award for Roofing Excellence at the gala awards dinner at this year’s conference in Nelson.

Shaun Harris started his roofing career at 17, straight out of school, with Calder Stewart Roofing. He quickly learnt the trade of roofing and was soon a foreman running his own jobs and supervising labour. Even at that young age, he showed maturity beyond his years with his positive ‘can-do’ attitude, his willingness to do the best for his customers, and his personal motivation to individually improve himself, remembers Keith Ivey, Managing Director at CS Roofing Southland.

“Shaun is a very motivated person who wants to be the best he can be, not only for himself but also for his family. I cannot speak highly enough of the attributes he brings to this company,” says Ivey. “In my long experience in the roofing industry [43 years], he would be the most complete package I have come across in terms of his abilities to install roofs, train installers, liaise with clients, supervise and manage projects, and maintain high standards of health and safety at all times – all in a courteous manner with dealing with everyone involved.”

It’s clear that during his 20 years at CS Roofing Southland, Shaun has become an invaluable asset to the company, not only as an excellent practitioner of roofing but also as a mentor and role model to the younger employees. It’s these ‘additional’ qualities, over and above being a damn good roofer,

which made him a standout choice for this year’s Roofing Excellence Award.

His commitment to the team and the company was further reinforced in April this year when he became a 25% shareholder in CS Roofing Southland Ltd and a Director of the company. Shaun’s career, rising through the ranks, is a perfect example to show young trainee roofers the pathway that can be achieved by hard work, getting qualified, and being personally motivated – starting roofing at the age of 17 to now being a director and a shareholder of a roofing company at the age of 38.

“Over time, Shaun will increase his shareholding to the point that he will own

the company,” says Keith Ivey. “His wife Kirsty, who runs her own beauty business, is currently working two days a week at CS Roofing Southland, learning the admin side of the business under the tutelage of our Business Manager Vicki Templeton. As their shareholding in the business increases, Kirsty will increase her involvement,” says Ivey.

“Their oldest son, 14-year-old Dekan, works in the workshop after school and in the school holidays. When he is old enough, Dekan says he wants to learn the roofing trade from his father. So this becomes the future of the next generation of roofers; the complete and perfect pathway of roofing that Shaun has worked for and achieved, and what RANZ has worked for as well.”

RANZ Judge’s Comments “This award is for ‘roofing excellence’, not just excellence in roofing. It’s a given that the recipient is very good at their trade, so we, as judges, were looking for all the other stuff that goes with the craft… like mentoring, work ethic, upskilling, enthusiasm, etc. It’s the big picture.

“For me, one of Shaun’s big wins is that he doesn’t have tunnel vision on the future of roofing or products. He had a world view. Most of our roofers can’t see past corrugated iron. Yes, it’s quintessentially New Zealand, but that’s it. Our craft is vastly bigger than that.

Ten minutes with Shaun We caught up with Shaun shortly after the awards and asked him a few questions about himself, the roofing industry, and any advice he had for young roofers.

Here’s what he had to say…

What motivates you?

I love doing the job I do, to be fair. I’ve been roofing pretty much since I left school at 17.

It’s the only job I’ve had, and I’ve never not enjoyed coming to work. I always strive to do a good job, so that motivates me.

Why did you pick roofing as a career?

It was luck, to be honest. I was working part-time in a supermarket as a leading hand, but I wanted to get a trade behind me. I wasn’t particularly looking at roofing, but I saw this advert in the Saturday morning paper for a roofing job at Calder Stewart. I thought, I wouldn’t mind giving that a go, so I took my CV into Keith [Ivey] and had an interview. I liked what Keith had to offer – but to be fair, I didn’t have a lot to offer [him]. I’d never held a hammer in my life, but Keith said, we can train you, and it went from there. I grew a passion for it and liked the challenge of working things out for myself.

You’ve worked your way up from being on the tools to becoming a Company Director.

Clearly, you’ve learnt a lot in your 20 years of roofing. What’s left to learn?

Probably business skills and business management. I have a good grasp on the trade, but my next step would be to get experience running the day-to-day side of the business, which I’m getting stuck into right now.

What makes a good roofer?

You’ve got to have passion for the job. If you haven’t got passion for the job you do, then you’re not going to produce the best work.

You also need good attention to detail.

What’s the best roof you’ve worked on?

That would have to be the new Murihiku Marae project in Invercargill that we’ve just finished, using the Dimond Tricore roofing system. The roof is shaped to replicate a whale’s tail. It was the first Tricore job we’d done, so one of the challenges was learning the new system – how it works around penetrations and skylights, which had never been done before. So we had to work with Dimond’s technical team on those details.

Health-and-safety comes across as a big priority for you. How do you ensure you keep your teams as safe as possible?

We always assess a site and have everything in place before our team steps foot on a job – whether we need safety catch-nets, a fully decked scaffold, or just full edge protection.

On the bigger jobs, we’ll do a complete site-specific safety plan. With the smaller jobs, we’ll do a JSA [Job Safety Analysis], which I’m about to go out and do now. We’ll then run through the job with the team to think about the task at hand, the possible hazards, and what’s put in place to help with those hazards.

To be fair, we train our guys not to take risks.

Talking about training, a repeated message from this year’s conference is that roofing will need to train its way out of the current skills shortage. How do you manage your day-to-day, on-site training?

Generally, we run teams of three – a qualified guy, an intermediate guy, who’s maybe

halfway through their apprenticeship, and a trainee. So there are three tiers of experience, with the qualified roofer in charge, but with everyone learning from each other. We also have a module in the workshop, but, to be fair, we don’t get a hell of a lot of time on it – just simple stuff, like barge ends, skylights and ridging junctions. A lot of the skills and techniques are site trained because it’s not always the bog-standard junctions you come across on site.

What’s the single piece of advice you would give a young roofer?

Stick at it. Roofing’s a great trade, with plenty of passionate people putting their hands up, wanting to help you. You’ve just got to be willing to learn and be ready to push through the hard times. Down here, winter is really tough on our guys because you can get three months of severe weather – and that can bring down morale. But you’ve got to stick with it because when the weather’s good, it’s bloody good.

Finally, Shaun, what’s your favourite roofing tool and your preferred roofing material?

For the tool, the invention of the Milwaukee Shears has made the job of cutting and ripping sheets a hell of a lot easier, especially when you’re coming to the end of a roof. Also, Wuko rollers are great when we’re working on tray. With the material, we mainly only work with ColorCote down here. It would be good to get a variety, like copper or zinc, but people down here don’t want to pay for it, generally.

"We faced significant hurdles with this project, initially with our coil being held up in transit to NZ for several months, then again when installing the spouting. To push forward, we ended up folding the gutters from mill-finished aluminium and then custom-painting them and all rainwater components.

A two-man team completed the roof, with our project manager stepping in to do the copper mouldings around the chimneys. Joe installed all welded, powder-coated flashings to skylights – with one diverter taking the three large skylights on both main faces – along with channel drains to chimneys and custom penetration seals.

The pitch was a challenge. We had to use clamps to install the ridging. High winds made things tricky at some points, too. Being in a very remote location, four hours from our base, delivery had to be spot on.

RANZ 2023 Commercial Roof of the Year Award

"The main building roof of the Gib Factory in Tauriko was 70,000 lineal metres of DD630. We were in charge of installing the roof, cladding, gutters, downpipes and flashing around all penetrations. For the DD630, we did both roll-to-roof and roll-toground on this project. This was the first time Harkin Roofing had rolled to roof, so there was a heap of learning that went on during that part of the project.

The gypsum storage building was 12,500 lineal metres of 32-degree roof of DD630, which presented considerable challenges to lay in the summer heat. It took the boys great stamina to lay this roof day in and day out. The weather also played a huge part: If it was too windy, we couldn’t lay, and if it was wet, it was too slippery.

There are hundreds of mechanical and service pipe penetrations through the roof and walls. Some of these are very large diameters requiring custommade welded upstand flashings, with large back trays to the ridge.

The plant tower also created several challenges for us to overcome, as it was 20 metres above floor level.

We had to clad behind structural stairways, which meant limited access while using multiple large access machines. The back of the plant tower above the roof required a complex scaffold system to enable access.

Combined with all this, several contractors were all trying to work in the same limited area, all having to operate in exclusion zones. Excellent communication and extensive planning were necessary to get his work done safely and within the set timeframes."

Navigating the seasons Luke Kemeys is an award-winning Chartered Accountant who runs nextAdvisory, a practice that helps aspirational business owners achieve their goals. Luke was invited to speak to delegates at this year’s RANZ Conference.

Here are his reflections on time spent with RANZ members and his advice to business owners.

It was a pleasure to be invited to speak at the RANZ Conference in Nelson in July. This was my first time attending, and I met some great people who are passionate about an industry that is essential to every single Kiwi. We all need ‘a roof over our head’ for a better New Zealand, which makes your work so important – so thank you for what you do.

From the discussions I had over the two days, the industry still has plenty of work to keep you busy, but there was an underlying tone about what sort of economic times we will be dealt in the coming years.

One of the key themes of my presentation was to get those in attendance to focus on their future business goals. In a noisy world, it is easy to get lost in the here and now and forget to zoom out and remind ourselves about: •

Why we got into business in the first place?

•

What we want to achieve?

•

What do we love doing, and how can we do more?

Secure your freedom

Anchoring back to our ‘why ‘is a simple way to give us a boost to remind us what it is all for. Most business owners are in business for a form of freedom, whether it be financial or time. Make sure your business hasn’t stolen your freedom. To do that, you need to work on your business in any given season, including the boom and the bust.

Whether we like it or not, times can and will get tough. If the tough times come, we want to be ready – ready to learn. During any tough time, ask yourself: •

What is one thing you want to learn through these times?

•

What is your goal for the other side?

•

How will you make up for lost time after this?

•

What business and life do you want going forward?

Bank the lessons from these times and compound them when tough times return.

If business owners can remain agile and navigate change, there’s no reason they can’t survive and even thrive. These challenges will ultimately build resilience, making for stronger and smarter businesses in the long run.

If you’re unsure of your future because of your present, I have an exercise for you. Here are three key questions for you to consider during worrying times: • What are the most significant dangers right now that you have to have eliminated by a year from now?

• What are the largest opportunities right now that you must have captured a year from now?

• What are the biggest strengths you have right now that you have to have made more substantial a year from now?

“Winter can be a tricky time, but you need to remember that we are simply in a season and seasons change, much like the economic season we are heading into.”

Don’t focus on the negative Interestingly, when it comes to worry, 90% of our thoughts are the same thoughts as yesterday and 80% of our thoughts are negative.

Therefore, it is no wonder we get attracted to negative news articles and end up consistently thinking about things that don’t serve us well in business.

Action is the antidote to anxiety. Write that worry down, then match it with an action you can take to resolve that negative thought; otherwise, you’ll be thinking about it tomorrow, too.

Control your cash One of the biggest dangers and worries we see our clients face is one you can no doubt relate to – cash.

Not understanding how cash flows through a business is up there as the number one issue for all business owners.

In a contracting economy, this is particularly important. You need to be able to model how your cash flow will look under different scenarios, such as:

• Build a rainy-day fund so you’ve got a buffer should things go south.

Aim for three months’ worth of overheads • Improve cash collection. Set your own terms for invoice due dates (it doesn’t always have to be the 20th of the following month), and charge a deposit where you can If you can stay on the front foot regarding cash, decision-making becomes much faster, and you can use your time more effectively.

More importantly, you free up what we can ‘mental rent’ where you aren’t spending your brain power worrying.

Keep asking these two questions As the future becomes less certain, decision-making becomes more challenging, and getting stuck in a rut is easy. Opportunities get missed, and businesses can get left behind when competitors start to move faster. The amount of time Kiwi business owners waste ‘thinking about it’ costs our economy millions in lost productivity and progress.

Learn to make decisions quickly, and it will improve your business beyond belief.

Business owners often get caught up in complicated plans with too many layers. This can hinder our ability to see the next steps. When it comes to business planning, there are two simple but essential questions that you need to come back to each quarter or month or whenever progress is stalling:

A customer changes their terms on you

1. What do you need to start doing?

• You buy a new asset with working capital (cash in the bank) rather than finance • You introduce money to the business but want to draw it out at a later date •

Taking on more debt

We try to keep it simple with clients and look at what’s going in, what’s going out, and what that leaves them with. Once you get the hang of cashflow forecasting, you realise its importance in showing you your future. This helps speed up decision-making.

Look at your cash balance like a fuel gauge. You don’t drive around in your ute and get surprised when you run out of fuel (some of you might) because you understand how much further the vehicle can take you. Before you run out or go on a long journey, you know what action you need to take – how much fuel you need.

2. What do you need to stop doing?

Humans tend to add more stuff to our plates when we should be removing it. On top of that, we tend to add the wrong things, so come back to these two questions regularly.

I hope that you navigate this new economic season and bank some lessons from it.

Remember not to burden the tough stuff on your own. Share it with your team and advisors and approach things proactively. The country needs every one of you, so please look after yourselves and stay in the fight.

RANZ Consumer Awareness and Education Series: Re-roofing Re-roofing can be a challenge from a technical and consumer-advisory perspective. RANZ advocates for all roofing to require licensing of the building practitioners and for the LBP scheme to be more integrated with the national qualifications in roofing. Many RANZ-member roofing professionals who complete re-roofing work to the expected high standards are understandably frustrated by poor performers in the sector. Alongside advocacy and training support, RANZ believes that raising consumer awareness and understanding via education will decrease the number of poor re-roofing outcomes across New Zealand.

Below is a re-roofing guide for consumers, which sets out to establish expectations and transparency for a successful re-roofing job of a high standard. It is available on the RANZ website, and more resources will be released.

A consumer guide to re-roofing Realistic quotes

Not all products are equal

There’s nothing wrong with getting several quotes. However, if it is only to get the lowest price, you may be doing yourself a disservice.

Useful things to consider include: How did the roofer arrive at the price? What is included?

What products have they offered? Will it work in the environment? Will it work on our house?

How will they do the work safely? What other extra costs should we consider?

Some roofing products are available in different grades depending on the environment/climate where they will be used.

If you are in a coastal or geothermal area, make sure the product offered will work in that environment. Find out what brand of product is being offered and do some research. A reputable supplier will provide advice on this. Some suppliers will check your location and advise if the product will work on your home. The product offered in the quote must be the one used. Product substitution can be problematic.

Replacement products & Building Consents The products you can choose for your roof might be limited or numerous. Most re-roofs are a ‘remove what was there and replace with the latest version’ scenario. This should not require a Building Consent as this is considered exempt under Schedule 1 of the Building Act. However, if you are making a significant change of roofing product from the existing type to another, then your roofer must clearly step you through what is required. For example, replacing a metal roof with a heavyweight roof would require a Building Consent and structural changes. Structural alterations to accommodate another type of roof may need new Consent. It is important to check with your local council if a Consent is required. Failing to get a Consent when one is needed could impact your insurance.

Minimum pitch requirements All roofing products have a minimum pitch at which they will perform. If you have a low-pitch roof (less than 3°), we recommend lifting the pitch to 3° or more. Failing to do that will have warranty implications (usually no warranty), and the work will be noncompliant. Tile and shingle products also have minimum pitch requirements-check with the supplier. Even though a Building Consent may not be required, building work (including re-roofing) must comply with the Building Code and the Building Act. Reroofing is defined as Building Work.

Gutter capacity If the roof has internal gutters, check gutter capacity with a current catchment calculator so that allowance has been made to cope with higher rainfall events. Just because it worked in the past does not mean it will manage going forward. An excellent calculator is in the NZ Metal Roofing Manufacturers Code of Practice V3.

Replace everything A re-roof is a compilation of elements that complement each other to provide a structural, weathertight, compliant solution.

For most roofing types, numerous details have similar names but are of a particular type depending on the roof type used. The best outcome is to replace every component.

Terminologies Ridge flashings, barge flashings, head flashings, apron flashings, valley flashings, parapet caps and underlay are some of the terms that should be there if those elements exist on your roof. These can also be referred to as trims and cappings. The names of details can also be particular to the roofing type.

Some of these terms apply to membrane roofs, but the most important part of a

membrane re-roof is the substrate (what the new membrane will be attached to). However, consideration needs to be given to keep the ‘hard to replace’ elements in place, which may be embedded behind other building products, such as stucco wall cladding.

A competent roofer will step you through the various aspects and limitations.

Ensure you understand what is in and, more importantly, what is out of scope and why.

These are usually written on your quote as ‘tags’, options or allowances. Tags may include allowances for timber repairs and/or how items attached to your roof will be managed, such as satellite dishes, solar panels, skylights and wall cladding intersections. The quote may also mention what is or isn’t included, such as whether the spouting is being replaced. Roof insulation would be another example. Be clear with your roofer about what implications this may cause (or not).

Be realistic Some areas around tags do cause some disagreements. Older roofs will have moved structurally, and can result in visible alignment issues. How straight do you expect the roof to be? Has your roofer checked for humps or sags in your roof? Be clear with your roofer about this. Also, be mindful that, given the age of your roof structure, it could be challenging to get the roof perfectly straight. Some comprise may be required. For flat roofs, ponding should be addressed. This can be more difficult to achieve depending on the substrate.

Timber repairs are another potential disagreement area if not understood. The extent of timber deterioration is typically not fully apparent until the old roofing is removed. Some leeway may be required. It is unrealistic to expect the roofer to allow for this in the quote.

be supplying the scaffolding/edge protection.

Also, very few roofing products can simply be picked up off the shelf. Most are made to order or need to be ordered well in advance due to lead times or may require specialised transport. And not all elements come from one source. Other trades may need to be coordinated and their availability confirmed, such as a plumber, gasfitter, builder, solar installer or satellite dish technician. Trades don’t always line up, which can cause delays.

The expectation is that your roofer will communicate all the above with you.

Signed contract

New insulation?

When doing a re-roof, consider doing other work that will be easier to achieve with the roof off. New insulation is a very smart, economical and sustainable thing to do, for example. The majority of heat loss in a home is through the roof space.

Ensure you’re insured Insurance is an essential part of your re-roof process but is often misunderstood as to how it works. As the homeowner, you need to contact your insurer and let them know that you are having the home re-roofed. Your insurer should advise what, if anything, you need to consider. The roofer should also have insurance. Check. In the unlikely event of something happening that activates an insurance claim, you need to advise your insurer. You would claim on your policy. If your insurer considers it the roofer’s fault, they will pursue the roofer and their insurer to recover the loss.

Safety & access The roofer will allow for various safety considerations. The most obvious are scaffold/edge protection systems, which are very common. Harnesses are another safety method used. Your roofer needs access close to your home. However, they also need to be considerate that you will be living on-site.

Animals need to be secured.

Parking for you and the roofer is another consideration. Usually, there will be a need for large delivery vehicles. Will your driveway sustain the load? These delivery vehicles can be trucks with cranes attached. Overhanging trees can also be a problem. Insurance policies require a 4-square-metre gap around your driveway so a fire appliance can reach the property. That space should also be suitable for most delivery vehicles.

If younger people are on your property, do not let them climb or play on the scaffold/

edge protection system. It would be best for them to stay inside while the re-roofing is done. Likewise, the roofer will watch out for all people on a site, so please give them space and follow their safety instructions.

You may be tempted to climb onto the scaffold/edge protection system and see how the work is progressing. Before you do that, contact the roofer for their express permission –and it is best done with them present, anyway.

Site space Site housekeeping is essential, too. The roofer usually requires a workspace to store and work with the roofing product as it is installed. Also, the roofer must secure materials at the end of the day and ensure there is no debris spread around the site, which could cause a cut or trip hazard, for example. Your roofer will also require power and, if possible, a toilet.

Weather allowances The weather has a significant impact on re-roofing. Rain is not the only consideration.

Wind conditions can also cause unsafe situations. The effect of the weather is for the roofer to manage as they are best placed to make that decision. The day may start fine and still, but weather can change quickly, and the roofer will need time to make your roof weathertight before the incoming weather arrives. It may be prudent for the roofer to be elsewhere on such days.

Discuss timelines Be assured the roofer wants to complete your roof as soon as possible. When choosing your roofer, get approximate start dates and how long the work should take. These dates can’t be set in stone for many reasons, so please bear this in mind. There are many moving parts for the roofer to manage, some of which the roofer may not have direct control over. For example, an outside business may

Always get a contract with your roofer.

This should set out what is involved, what product will be used, the colour choice and grade of the product, and the terms of sale.

It is not unusual for the roofer to ask for a deposit – 50% is not uncommon. The contract should also set payment terms.

The roofer may use the Construction Contracts Act (recommended). They must give you Form 1 if they use the CCA, which clearly sets out how both parties shall deal with payment. Do not pay cash for anything.

Unforeseen problems If problems occur during your re-roof, you should expect your roofer to provide timely communications with professional responses.

Your roofer must provide weathertight, compliant work that meets or exceeds recognised industry documents and manufacturers’ requirements. Both parties should be polite with their enquiries of each other in this space. RANZ members are expected to own problems of their doing and reasonably make good such problems.

Get warranties Typically, warranties come in two parts: workmanship and materials. Workmanship warranties cover the work the roofer/installer has done. Material warranties come from the roofing supplier/manufacturer and are particular to the components. Keep invoices and warranties as proof of purchase.

To maintain warranties, there are usually maintenance requirements which you, as the homeowner, must carry out. Ask your roofer what needs to be done to maintain the warranty requirements. Please be very careful and sure of your safety if you decide to carry out maintenance work yourself.

As you can see, there is plenty to get your head around regarding re-roofing. Always use a member of the Roofing Association of NZ. Always ask questions and ask for referrals of previous work done by the roofer.

Ultimately, you need to be comfortable with your choice of roofer. If you’re not sure, get someone else.

Supporting a learning workplace: key insights for success

In a recent verifier support session, several invaluable tips and techniques were shared on how best to support a learning workplace.

These insights offer a blueprint for fostering an environment where growth, excellence and continuous learning thrive. Below are some key takeaways from this session that shed light on the practices that can transform workplaces into centres of learning and achievement. Thanks to our speaker Vadim Spice for sharing insights and ideas from his perspective.

1. Building resilience through early work Even before the apprenticeship journey starts, the early years serve as a foundation for navigating the world’s challenges. The work undertaken during these early years, even if seemingly unrelated, contributes to building resilience. Every experience, whether positive or challenging, equips learners with the strength needed to confront adversity and grow. This principle reminds us that embracing every experience as a learning opportunity prepares us for the future.

2. Trades: a fusion of expertise The trades within our industry are much more than hands-on skills; they encompass a fusion of science, technology, and engineering. This insight highlights the specialised nature of the work our learners engage in. From understanding the intricate

mechanics of a structure to incorporating cutting-edge technology, the mastery of trades demands a holistic approach.

Embracing this multidimensional nature equips learners with the versatility to thrive in an ever-evolving landscape.

3. Learners as representatives of standards In the realm of our workplace, learners stand as representatives of our company’s values and standards. This realisation was emphasised during the session. The quality of their work reflects the standards we uphold.

Guiding learners goes beyond individual growth; it is a collective effort to maintain and elevate the reputation and integrity of the organisation. This perspective reinforces the significance of investing in the development of our learners.

4. Strong relationships and integrity Two cornerstones of a learning workplace emerged prominently from the session: strong relationships and integrity. The importance of fostering strong connections within the team cannot be overstated. These relationships facilitate effective communication, collaboration, and mentorship. Additionally, maintaining integrity when signing off work is crucial to uphold the company’s high standards.

Upholding these standards is the

commitment to excellence and professionalism.

5. Celebrating sign-off and achievements The power of celebration is a celebration!

Sign-off and comments on work are not merely administrative tasks; they are milestones that deserve acknowledgement.

Recognising the efforts and accomplishments of learners fosters a culture of appreciation and motivation. Making a concerted effort to celebrate these achievements conveys that hard work is valued and rewarded.

6. Role modelling: leading by example Learners keenly observe the behaviour and actions of those who have traversed the path before them. As the session highlighted, those in positions of experience are not just individuals but role models. Every action, decision, and interaction shapes the perceptions and attitudes of newcomers. We are responsible for exemplifying professionalism, ethics, and a passion for continuous learning.

7. Making learning a primary focus Amid the busy demands of the workplace, the session emphasised the need to prioritise learning. Rather than treating training as an afterthought, it should be woven into the fabric of the workplace culture. This fundamental shift places learning at the

forefront, leading to a well-equipped, knowledgeable, and adaptable workforce. By embracing this philosophy, organisations can stay ahead of industry trends and maintain a competitive edge.

8. Gathering comprehensive evidence Collecting evidence of capability is a practice that enhances understanding and assessment. However, the session revealed the importance of seeking a comprehensive perspective. Discussing with peers and colleagues provides a well-rounded view of an individual’s capabilities. This collaborative approach ensures that decisions are informed and accurate, contributing to fair evaluations and personalised development paths.

9. Capturing progress through documentation The power of documentation as a tool for capturing progress and achievements was highlighted during the session. Even when not explicitly required, taking photos serves as a visual representation of growth. These images become a source of pride, allowing

learners to see tangible evidence of their journey and reminding them of their accomplishments.

10. Allocated administrative time: a strategic investment Carving out dedicated administrative time is vital amid the hustle and bustle of daily tasks.

This time serves as an opportunity to review progress and provide guidance. Being present during these moments demonstrates commitment and ensures learners receive the support needed to thrive.

Each principle contributes to a dynamic and thriving environment, from building resilience to celebrating achievements, from being role models to embracing continuous learning. By implementing these insights, workplaces can foster a culture of growth, excellence, and accomplishment that benefits learners, the organisation, and the industry.

A Auckland. I have been here 16 years but was born and bred in the mighty Waikato.

Q What motivates you?

A My family is my biggest motivation. I always strive to be the best version of myself and lead by example, showing my kids that anything is possible if you work hard and never give up on your dreams.

A No two days are ever the same, but my workday is a good mixture of promotional and event planning, customer engagements, looking at new products to market, and working alongside an amazing team. I try to

balance my work and personal life with walking the dog and spending quality time with friends and family.
