Home matters Kia ora tātou, With many RANZ members working with busy and full job-order books ahead, the talk of economic slowdown impacts seems somewhat contradictory. However, few would question the ongoing price increases and supply constraints are adding relatively new and persistent challenges to daily operations.

Whatever the size of your roofing business, looking at productivity and where gains can be made seems a relevant and reliable area to focus operational improvement efforts.

Now, with the sector leadership role of ‘Transformation Lead – People’ for the Construction Sector Accord, long-time specialist trades’ champion Graham Burke has written an article for RANZ members offering tailored guidance on productivity – see p14 for his valuable insight.

Over the past six months, another topic front of mind with many roofers has been the increase in extreme rainfall events – making the overflow systems technical article by Paul Stanley-Boden on p17 of particular relevance.

New Zealand Steel recently announced significant changes to their manufacturing as a measure to help significantly axe their carbon emissions. Check out the coverage on their new electric arc furnace on p30.

Just before we go to print, we can announce that our two inaugural Metal Roofer of the Year contenders for the live Roofing Skills Battle at RANZ 2023 Conference are Nathan Leslie, Top Notch Roofing Otago vs Ben Clisby, Protech Roofing (Manawatu). As of the beginning of May, the H1 changes are now online. These changes appear to be challenging disciplines across the sector – including builders, engineers, architects, and specialist trades – on the importance of looking at the whole roofing system. The H1 changes and healthy homes strategy need you and your informed perspectives, thinking caps, and expertise. Again, we have two relevant articles on this topic, see p33 and healthy homes p29.

We will also have a technical panel at the conference, troubleshooting H1 application pitfalls and better solutions. A webpage with the previous H1 articles we have featured is also included for you – see p32.

Hopefully, RANZ 2023 Conference will offer many member delegates a well-deserved mid-winter (Matariki/new natural year) opportunity to refresh while gaining relevant information, updates, and networking opportunities. CEO Winter 2023 Being roofers, we consider ourselves weather experts and all that goes with that. It has been so wet this year that I’m not telling the truth anymore when I say I live in the Winterless North. They announced this weekend that we had had 102% of our annual rainfall – and it’s only May! We had 54mm in one hour and over 100mm in a six-hour patch last week.

The volume of water our roofs, rainwater systems and stormwater drains must manage is undoubtedly challenging. It is, therefore, essential we understand how all these systems work. Generally, new builds have factored-in margins to prevent internal ingress. But we must be careful with new builds and stick to the designated downpipe solutions. Do not get lured into moving a downpipe because it is too close to the front door. Do not get talked into moving an overflow to somewhere less conspicuous.

Overflows should be seen when in use, so action can be taken to stop the overflow and let normal drainage pathways resume.

Be mindful, too, of the impact of the stormwater or water-harvesting systems in use. You get the water off the roof fast and

down the downpipes, but if the stormwater system can’t cope or the harvesting system does not get the water into the tanks quickly, then it does not take much to fill the downpipe up, and you have an overflowing gutter; and if it is an internal gutter, then you will be thankful about having the right size overflows. Paul Stanley-Boden has written a great article on page 17. This article is a great reference point for your teams too.

I have come across some key points that you re-roofers out there need to be mindful of to avoid getting yourselves into a pile of trouble.

When doing a re-roof with internal gutters present, it is no defence to state it was a like-for-like replacement, so we could just put back what was there before. No one ever regretted installing more overflows, either!

It won’t hurt to check if there are enough downpipes of the right size, either.

It is not expensive to credit-check your customers through a third party, so you can make informed choices about whether you should do business with that company. Don’t assume they are fine financially – find out!

RANZ how-to guides: A valued resource

Roofer wins Site Safe Leadership Award

On a recent VHNZ block course, trainer and RANZ Executive Committee Member Mark Bishop observed students relishing the guidance the RANZ How-to Guide gave, proving their continued value alongside the new online adaptation of the series – the RANZ Roofing Guide app.

Ben Clisby from Protech Roofing of New Plymouth has taken out the Site Safe Leadership Award category. He won the prestigious health-and-safety accolade for creating the video resource series (with CHASNZ) for the ‘Work Should Not Hurt’ campaign, as highlighted at the RANZ 2022 Conference. You can learn more about Ben in the Meet the Network Q&A on p39. Check out the video series, which shares everyday work solutions for roofers to prevent aches and pains, at chasnz.org/wsnh-trades/roofing.

Also, Liz Watson has recently joined VHNZ as a trainer – read more about this news in the regular New Zealand Women in Roofing (NZWiR) column on p23.

Extending the Apprenticeship Boost initiative Budget 2023 has extended the Apprenticeship Boost initiative to the end of 2024, at an expected cost of $77.1 million, including new funding of $17.1 million. Apprenticeship Boost provides subsidies to employers of first- and second-year apprentices, to support those apprentices while working toward a qualification. As of March 2023, 57,040 apprentices have been supported through the initiative.

“The extension will enable an estimated 30,000 apprentices to start or continue being supported during challenging economic times. It continues the Government’s focus on apprenticeships and ensuring a strong pipeline of skilled workers for key industries,” Jan Tinetti, Minister of Education.

Summer Safety Campaign Winners In February, SARNZ (Scaffolding Access and Rigging New Zealand Inc.) teamed up with RANZ for Working Through Summer – a sun and heat safety campaign for our roofing and scaffolding people (Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn). Congratulations to Harking Roofing, who won one of two team prize packs. Thank you to all who entered and tuned in along the way to freshen up on heat and sun safety – and to get the best out of our work days.

As we know, this past summer has also had some really sour notes. We want to send a big shout-out to Harkin Roofing, who supported team members to help with the clean-up efforts in Hawkes Bay following the devastating flooding from cyclone Gabrielle. We know there are more like them out there across the sector and are pleased to have each made a $300 contribution to relief efforts from both RANZ and SARNZ as part of the campaign, too, along with providing sector support as always for the rebuild and remediation efforts ahead.

New Workplace Verifiers Guide from VHNZ Marcie Hintz from VHNZ, Michael Chapman from Waihanga Ara Rau, and Graham Moor, CEO of RANZ, came together recently to continue their work on the NZ Certificate in Roofing review. The team at VHNZ began preparing for the review in late 2022, unpacking the qualification and examining the individual learning outcomes. This review will see the transition from unit standards to skills standards, offering significant opportunities in terms of transferable competencies and less prescriptive range statements. Overall, it is an exciting time in the training world, especially in learning design.

A new comprehensive guidance resource has been created for those tasked with the role of Workplace Verifier for roofing apprentices.

RANZ CODE OF ETHICS

RANZ Code of Ethics Your Executive have reviewed and agreed to an updated version of our Code of Ethics. The new Code better reflects the times and how industry operates today.

There are a couple in here which your Executive have placed more emphasis on to achieve better outcomes.

9. NO MEMBER OR THEIR WORKFORCE SHALL consciously endeavour to attract or offer employment to the workforce of a fellow member without first advising the fellow member.

Simply, don’t poach!!

11. MEMBERS shall provide timely communication to clients and be accountable for their actions.

Simply do what you say you will do and let your clients know. If you get it wrong, fix it! The vast majority of our members do this and do it well.

But there are some who think ignoring something, or think that it’s good enough (their opinion), or think we don’t need to let anyone know will suffice. This is not professional enough.

The balance of the Code of Ethics are just common sense. As members you agree to abide by your Association Rules and Code of Ethics. We are part of a profession and as such we need to operate ethically. As I said before nearly all members do this well. I would also point out if you’re facing a complaint read through the Code of Ethics and if you are following the Code it should be able to be sorted.

These will also be included in subsequent RANZ-Member publications.

Your updated RANZ Code of Ethics: 1. ALL MEMBERS of the Roofing Association of New Zealand Inc shall be bound by this Code of Ethics and the Rules as laid down by the Association.

2. ALL MEMBERS of the Association shall conduct their affairs in a manner to uphold the reputation of the Association at all times and shall actively seek to promote and improve the standards of the trade.

3. MEMBERS SHALL refrain from expressing detrimental comments or criticism to others on the performance, conduct or fees of fellow members, HOWEVER, members may bring to the attention of the Executive any breach of conduct by others that may bring the Association into disrepute.

4. WHERE there has been a complaint made by a client or another member relating to conduct or workmanship, the member concerned shall co-operate fully and agree, if deemed necessary, to have the Association investigate the complaint, and shall agree to abide by any decision made by the Executive and/or Disputes Committee. The Member must adhere to the RANZ Complaint/Dispute Code of Conduct.

Members must inform their fellow member where they have been requested to provide a report about that member, prior to the inspection.

5. ALL MEMBERS shall conduct their affairs in a legal and good businesslike manner.

6. EVERY MEMBER shall adopt and maintain a Health and Safety Policy and abide by that of others in order to promote the welfare of its workforce, its customers and the general public.

7. EVERY MEMBER is expected to support Industry Training by actively encouraging the achievement of qualifications.

8. NO MEMBER OR THEIR WORKFORCE SHALL mislead nor express or imply criticism of fellow members in any advertising or communications when dealing with customers.

9. NO MEMBER OR THEIR WORKFORCE SHALL consciously endeavour to attract or offer employment to the workforce of a fellow member without first advising the fellow member.

10. MEMBERS and their workforce will acknowledge and respect the culture, gender and values of clients, colleagues and the community.

11. MEMBERS shall provide timely communication to clients and be accountable for their actions.

BUSINESS PRODUCTIVITY

Make everything count What gets measured gets done – improving productivity across the board.

Whether we are working in a market that is in an upward or downward part of the economic cycle, productivity is a key driver of a business’s profitability and possibly survival. Productivity is a measure of how efficiently resources are used by a business to produce goods or services.

A useful definition from Te Waihanga/New Zealand Infrastructure Commission’s 2022 report ‘Economic performance of the NZ construction sector’: •

Productivity: Productivity reflects the quantity and quality of output produced for a given quantity of inputs. Productivity increases when firms work out how to do more with less.

•

Labour productivity is calculated by dividing real output by a measure of labour inputs, such as total hours worked.

•

Multifactor productivity is calculated by dividing real output by a measure of total labour inputs and capital inputs, including equipment and machinery used in production.

In the roofing industry, productivity can be measured by factors such as the square metres of roofing installed per day or week, divided by the labour inputs for labour productivity, or total inputs including plant, vehicles, and overheads for multifactor productivity.

While measuring labour productivity is useful for monitoring the performance of individuals or teams, it is multifactor productivity that drives the performance of the business.

The roofing industry has experienced unprecedented growth for over a decade. However, the latest statistics for permits and consumer confidence indicate the market is slowing and may even be shrinking in some areas. Roofing is a competitive and dynamic industry that has suffered from acute labour shortages and COVID-related supply chain disruptions in recent years. There has never been a more critical time to take stock of the productivity of your business.

What gets measured, gets done It is a cliché that “what gets measured gets done”, but it is very true.

What is also important is to measure what is important to your business and to ensure the way you measure is efficient and cost-effective.

Wherever possible, use metrics that already exist in the business and are readily available, such as material take-offs and timesheets.

It is also important to measure productivity in a way that is relevant to the scale and complexity of your operation. There is a huge difference between what is needed for a business with one or two teams to a large multi-faceted roofing business.

Effective time management Time is a valuable resource, not just when we are busy, because wasted time is wasted money. Time management involves scheduling tasks and allocating resources to maximise productivity and minimise waste.

This includes creating a realistic programme and timeline for each

project, setting deadlines, and prioritising tasks based on their importance and urgency. There are many products on the market to assist in programming, and most include useful reporting functions.

Again, it is critical to use a programme appropriate to your operation’s scale and complexity. These products will also only work as well as the information inputted to them and the ability of the business to keep to the programme. Check out some examples at Digital Boost.

Skilled labour Skilled labour is a critical element in any business and applies equally to every position, from trainee to owner. A roofing business must ensure that its people have the necessary skills and experience to complete their part of projects efficiently and effectively. Investing in training and professional development will help businesses improve the skills and knowledge of their workers, directly impacting productivity.

Essential skills do not finish with the technical skills needed to be a roofer but extend to the interpersonal skills needed to lead a team and win work, business management, computing skills and many others.

Indirect improvements to productivity will come from less rework, improved job satisfaction and staff retention.

Again, assessing the benefits of training and ensuring you invest in skills that provide a positive return on investment is essential. Reducing spending on training when work is quiet will often negatively impact productivity and limit a business’s ability to respond when work picks up.

Utilising technology Advanced technology brings multiple opportunities to improve productivity across a business, making it possible to complete projects faster and more efficiently. The use of technology such as drones, 3D imaging, and roofing software can help roofing businesses improve their productivity by providing accurate measurements, reducing errors, and enabling better project management. For instance, initial estimates can often be completed using Google Earth, eliminating the need to visit sites for physical measurements. Drones can be used to inspect roofs, saving time and reducing the need for manual inspections. Roofing software can help manage project timelines, automate processes, and provide insights into the progress of the project.

Wellbeing, health and safety Safety is a critical aspect of any roofing project and a legal requirement of every business, owner, and officer of the company. While some business owners see health and safety as a compliance issue and concentrate on minimising costs, smart operators incorporate their wellbeing, health and safety planning into their job methodology and programming. The task analysis that is essential for identifying hazards and managing risks is also a critical element in planning an efficient project. Robust planning and developing standard operating procedures will improve efficiency, reduce hold-ups and ensure a safe and healthy working environment.

Paying attention to broader aspects of wellbeing also has a positive impact on productivity. Improved wellbeing equates to reduced fatigue, less absenteeism, fewer injuries and better output. This also applies to reducing the “minor” musculoskeletal injuries that plague the construction industry and take a huge personal toll on our people.

Reducing waste and rework Reducing waste through accurate measuring and quality management is excellent for the environment and the bottom line. Over-ordering or mistakes in ordering reduce productivity by increasing the inputs into a project. Likewise, product damage through poor installation or transportation is avoidable and will be reduced by good planning and investing in skilled people.

Fleet management Motor vehicle expenses are often in the top two or three highest items of a business’s overheads, especially with the costs of fuel, servicing and road user charges having increased significantly in recent times. Motor vehicle accidents are also a leading cause of serious workplace injuries.

There are often opportunities to reduce fleet costs by applying the same disciplines of planning and training. Mileage can be reduced by taking fewer vehicles to site, planning jobs to reduce the number of trips and planning routes to minimise distance. Just buying lunch on the way to work can significantly reduce mileage and lost time.

Driver training can benefit safety and reduce maintenance costs and fuel consumption through better driving habits. This type of training has many options, including online modules that can be picked up at any time – may be filling in that wet afternoon or other downtimes.

Technology is also available to track mileage and driving habits, providing reports on where savings can be made, automating the purchase of road-user charges, and scheduling maintenance.

Effective communication Effective communication is essential for the success of any project, especially in the roofing industry, which requires coordination with multiple clients, suppliers, and other trades. An efficient roofing business must ensure that all stakeholders, including employees, customers, and suppliers, are kept informed and updated throughout the project. This involves using clear and concise communication, such as regular progress reports and meetings, to ensure everyone is on the same page and to reduce the number of hold-ups, downtime, and trips to site.

Continuous improvement Continuous improvement is an ongoing process of identifying areas for improvement and implementing changes to increase productivity and efficiency. A roofing business should regularly evaluate its processes and procedures and identify areas for improvement. This can involve feedback from customers, employees and suppliers. Performance metrics are of limited use if they are not analysed to find areas of improvement. Changes do not have to be big if we are continuously improving; making a difference of 1% each month is a 12.7% improvement over a year, which could make a significant difference to a business’s bottom line.

In conclusion, there are often multiple ways a business can improve productivity. A business will unlikely improve without measuring and monitoring performance in a manner appropriate to its size and complexity. Technology can provide some valuable solutions along with investment in training and business systems, keeping in mind the right solution must have a positive return on investment. Most importantly, a successful business will always track its performance and use that data to improve productivity.

Internal gutter overflows An internal gutter needs an overflow – it’s as simple as that. To be more specific, a gutter needs to be able to overflow in a ‘controlled’ manner. It’s just a question of where it overflows to.

The rules* are: an internal gutter shall be fitted with overflow outlets, which drain to the exterior of the building. That is a clear and unambiguous statement. You must have overflows in a gutter. The reason for this goes back to the purposes of the building code clause E1 – surface water- to protect people and property from harm or damage from water entering the building.

There are two main reasons why an internal gutter would fill up with enough water to overflow into a building; the more common one being a blocked outlet, the other being extreme rainfall, enough to overwhelm the discharge capacity of the gutter. Given the recent extreme weather events that NZ has experienced, the second option may become less of a rarity.

Looking a little deeper into the E1*, we find that the top of the overflow shall be at least 50mm below the top of the gutter. Given the wide variety of internal gutter designs, it is unclear how this is applied practically. It is best to interpret the top of the gutter as the lowest termination point of the membrane that could overflow into the building (figure 1). Bearing in mind also that E2** states that the internal gutter has a minimum freeboard of 30mm, you need to avoid the situation where an overflow is level with the bottom of the gutter (because it is now a drain).

The next requirement is that the overflow needs to be the same size or bigger than the outlet. Pretty obvious. If the outlet is blocked, the overflow must be able to step up and carry the full outlet capacity. And, in an extreme weather event, you have effectively doubled the discharge capacity.

Lastly, E1 would like you to put the overflow where it can be seen and where it can’t cause additional harm. It’s important that the building’s occupants can see an overflow working so that they are alerted to a possible problem with the gutter or outlet or to be more pragmatic about it – know it’s time to clean out the gutters.

The ‘additional harm’ request relates to E1 and surface water. It is preferable that the water discharging from an overflow runs clear of the building. Having prevented the overflow water from coming through the ceiling, it’s also a good idea to avoid it coming through the front door! So far, so good.

The challenge to the roofer is not so much the requirements of the building code but dealing with the practical application of said requirements. There are several common ‘constraints’ to meeting your obligations: • Often, there are no overflows drawn on the plans. This usually leads to the inevitable on-site debate with a builder about whether they’re needed. The best response here is, “Yes, they are, and it’s easier to do it now than when it’s picked up during a later inspection.”

• “We don’t need an overflow because there’s one on the rainwater head.” Wrong. The overflow on the RWH deals with a blockage in the RWH outlet and prevents backflow into or under the gutter outlet.

• Aesthetics #1. “The architect wants the overflow(s) hidden somewhere, like in the rain head.” As we have discussed earlier, one of the functions of an overflow is as an early warning of potential problems, which can’t happen if you hide it.

• Aesthetics #2. “I don’t want a big ugly pipe sticking out of the wall.

A single 100mm x 50mm pipe has less sidewall area and less ‘drag’ than two 50mm x 50mm pipes. It is also worth remembering that the smaller the outlet, the greater the probability it will block. Suddenly, your double-overflow option starts to look more like three or four. The better solution here is to cover the ‘big ugly’ with a shroud or grill to look like a light or a vent.

Many of the aesthetic concerns can also be overcome with some forward planning. There are several ways to deal with the overflow ‘problem’. For example, the type and location of the overflow in the gutter is often optional. The overflow can be anywhere along the length of the gutter, provided you set heights correctly (Figure 2). It can also be in the floor of the gutter rather than the side (Figure 2a).

This could allow you to drop it through the soffit and disguise it.

Types of outlets Sumps, scuppers or drains are the three main gutter outlet accessory options. The type of outlet will often determine the kind of overflow, in that sumps and drains can have overflow versions.

Sumps are installed into the base or floor of the gutter and usually include an overflow. The height of the entry point of the overflow is set to take the excess flow should the outlet block or become overwhelmed. This height setting must also prevent water from entering the overflow system under ‘normal’ conditions. If not, the overflow outlet will often drip.

Water discharging from the overflow pipe must be visible. If the overflow is connected to the downpipe, it is no longer performing the required functions of an overflow. In this situation, it is only a backup outlet, and an alternative overflow must be installed.

Drains are also installed into the base of the gutter for obvious reasons.

However, it is possible to use the same accessory in the wall of the gutter as an overflow. Alternatively, there are overflow variants that can be installed in the base, which have an in-built ‘riser’ for the overflow. The drain/overflow combos are ideal if the gutter is visible and aesthetics are a factor.

Equally, the overflow could have been installed on the same plane, anywhere along the parapet wall, provided the scupper discharge point was visible and an overflow did not create a nuisance.

And then, there is the specific design or alternative solution overflow.

In the design below, the gutter has no overflow accessories. The gutter system is designed with the front gutter wall lower than the rear. In the event of a flood, the gutter overflows clear of the building along the entire length of the gutter (Figure 4). Arguably, this is the most robust variant, but it is subject to specific design (for consenting purposes) and will need to consider the run-off implications at the level below.

Remedial work Extreme weather (i.e. heavy rainfall) typically results in phone calls from clients with gutter leaks. There is a high probability that the problem is a lack of maintenance – the gutter is full of leaves, dead birds, tennis balls, plastic bags, waste materials from the last heat pump service etc. It’s an easy, if not pleasant fix.

Occasionally it is damage (the AC guy again or maybe an over-zealous gutter cleaner) and, again, not usually difficult to resolve. However, sometimes it’s a capacity issue and/or an absence of overflows. An absence of overflows in older constructions is relatively common – possibly due to a lack of plan details. The modern-day consenting authorities, however, are much more enthusiastic about overflows. I suggest you quickly calculate the roof and adjacent wall areas (if applicable***) and refer to Table 5 of E1* to see if the outlet is big enough. If not, you have a slightly bigger remedial task or two on your hands.

In the case of a standard double garage attached to the side of a two-storey building, this could increase the catchment area from approx. 50m2 to 85m2.

Training the future Answering the call to give back to the industry, Liz Watson has joined Vertical Horizonz as a Roofing Trainer.

Liz Watson, roofer and operations manager at Stone Roofing Ltd has always looked for a challenge. As an active youth, she could not imagine a life working in an office or in front of a computer all day. She strove to be active outdoors and creating things with her hands.

With a love of people and problem-solving, Liz sought a career that would allow both personal and professional development – ideally, working outdoors. Roofing was the answer.

Liz began her career with a Wintec Panel & Paint course in 2001, but by 2010 she had been drawn into the world of roofing – and her passion clearly showed in her work. In 2017, she was awarded RANZ Roof Trainee of the Year, when females represented only 1% of the roofing industry, and in 2019 was BCITO & NAWIC Tradeswoman of the Year and a finalist for COLORSTEEL Roofer of the Year.

Training path Also in 2017, Liz qualified in metal tiles, and by 2019 had qualified in iron roof and wall cladding; two separate training strands that each took three years to complete – that’s six years doing apprenticeships.

Like many young people looking to make their way in the working world, Liz struggled with developing her own sense of value and place in her chosen profession. Rather than listen to the imposter syndrome voice in her head, she decided to go down the path of learning, concentrating her energies on becoming a technically focused roofer. As a result, she now leads a team in which she inspires the same detailed focus and continuous improvement.

Giving back Giving back is central to Liz’s family culture, and she brings this to her working life with passion. With her partner Dan Stone, Stone Roofing Ltd has invested in offering ‘second

chance’ opportunities to individuals who show promise, and through work and life coaching, it has helped them develop into valuable team members in their roofing business.

This culture of ‘giving back’ led Liz to respond to a recent RANZ call for experienced roofers to assist with training the next generation. The cry for ‘more staff’ and ‘I can’t get enough experienced workers’ is common to all roofing business owners, and Liz was amazed to hear how few trainers there are out there to develop roofing skills. “The roofing industry has given me so much, and I saw this as another opportunity to give back and provide some of the support I received,” says Liz. New role Liz is delighted with her new role as a Roofing Trainer for Vertical Horizons New Zealand (VHNZ). As Vertical Horizonz’ first female roofing trainer in New Zealand, Liz is living the roofing industry’s goals of diversity and inclusion, and is a strong industry advocate and role model for young women entering the roofing profession. She has valued the training and mentorship from Bruce Wood from Metalcraft Roofing, Hamilton and Dan Stone, Stone Roofing and is keen to share her skills with the next generation of young roofers.

Growing numbers In 2022, females represented 3% of the roofing industry, currently 1% (21) are actively training in their apprenticeship. All of the 21 apprentices have been offered membership with New Zealand Women in Roofing (NZWIR) with four taking up the offer.

NZWIR offers education, mentorship and professional development opportunities, including scholarships to attend the annual RANZ conference and, in 2023, a Women In Leadership course with Outward Bound.

As we congratulate Liz Watson on being Vertical Horizonz’ first female roofing trainer in New Zealand, and thank her for her contribution to roofing, Marcia Hintz, Industry Manager for VHNZ, says: VHNZ are always on the lookout for trainers who have the X-factor – individuals who can coach, mentor, and support learners to achieve their goals. Liz is an individual who possesses that X-factor. She is relatable, understands the demands of the apprenticeship, and is able to connect with the people she meets.

But it’s not just her people skills that make Liz the perfect fit for VHNZ. She is also a committed roofing owner who is making waves across the industry. Her skills and experience are highly valued in the roofing world, and she is already doing a lot to support the industry.

In addition to her work in roofing, Liz is also doing great things in the wāhine space. Her dedication to empowering women is evident in everything she does, and this is something that VHNZ admires and wants to support.

Liz’s can-do attitude and passion for her work make her an ideal trainer for VHNZ. She truly cares about the people she works with and is committed to helping them succeed. We can expect great things from Liz in her role as a roofing trainer, and VHNZ is lucky to have her on board.

Top Notch Roofing – rising to the challenge Dunedin-based roofer Nathan Leslie relishes taking on the tough jobs.

Catlins-born-and-bred Nathan Leslie started his roofing career just a month after his 18th birthday. Although he had studied accounting and economics at school, intending to head off to Uni, he says he loved his rugby and wasn’t academically driven enough to get his university entrance. Instead, he chose roofing as a stopgap, with the idea of saving up some money and going to Uni down the track.

But that never happened.

“After a few years, I thought, I don’t want to go back into a classroom,” he says. However, Nathan did go back into the classroom, sort of. He was one of the first roofers to go through an apprenticeship with SKILLS in 1998 – at Unitec in West Auckland. At the time, he worked for Metalcraft.

After twenty-odd years working for various companies in Auckland and Dunedin, Nathan now runs his own bespoke roofing business, Top Notch Roofing, out of his home in Dunedin. “Top Notch has been running for about three years now. We have five guys out on the tools, two of them apprentices. Then there’s my wife Sarah and me in the office,” he says. “The idea of starting my own business partly came about after talking to a mentor-mate of mine who said to my wife, ‘Nathan’s skills were wasted working for other people and we would do so much better for ourselves going out on our own?’ So, we thought I’d give it a crack,” he says.

He says the main reason they decided to start their own company was the challenge of taking on work that other roofing companies often say no to because it’s seen as either too difficult or not profitable enough.

“I love a challenge of turning weird and complex plans into something that works, and that’s good to look at – and there’s good money to be made working out solutions for these more difficult jobs, too. In the past, a lot of the companies I worked for would often put this kind of work in the ‘too hard basket’. It was heartbreaking watching good, challenging jobs go by the wayside.”

Building a name for himself Nathan’s drive and persistence have paid off, and he’s now got a reputation in Dunedin for taking on what he euphemistically calls the ‘wanky stuff’. “If those kinds of jobs come up, other companies will point them our way,” he laughs. “One of them, we’ve entered into this year’s RANZ Roofing Awards. It came from another roofing company, who said it was too hard and they didn’t have the time to do it. ‘Go and talk to Nathan, they said – we don’t have the manpower to do it’.

There were only four of us at the time, but I thought, it’ll be OK; we’ll figure it out.”

The Top Notch team are currently working directly with a number of architects on some complex residential jobs. Nathan admits that it’s a very hands-on process, with lots of time spent in discussion with the suppliers working out how to fabricate some ‘fairly spectacular flashings’, as he puts it. It’s a cool process, he says. And it also builds up a catalogue of unique and interesting details that he can adapt and re-use in future jobs.

“Currently, there’s no decent roofing window detail on the market that’s a standard copy-and-paste,” says Nathan. “Most are average; the rest are just garbage. But they’re the only ones in the system, so architects just use them. So we say, how about we do them this way instead.”

Specialist jobs aside, Top Notch’s bread and butter is residential re-roofing. Nathan’s goal is to have one or two of those ‘big detail’ jobs spread over a year, while all the re-roofing is happening. “I’m probably one of the more expensive roofers around town, but you get what you pay for, and we endeavour to do really good work and look after people. That’s our market.”

Business mentor In setting up their business Nathan and Sarah got a lot of help and encouragement from roofer Max Brough from New Plymouth. “Max

has been invaluable to us,” says Sarah. “He went through the numbers and the business side of things with us and gave us the final push to set up on our own.”

“To go out on your own, you need to be resilient, and you have got to be accurate on your pricing right from the start,” says Nathan. “It’s tough.

There should probably be more help for those who want to make the next move and start their own businesses. Currently, there are no mentorship programmes.” However, he says it shouldn’t be part of the basic apprenticeship – the business and budgeting should be a completely separate course or module.

It’s too much information.

“The young guys just want to be trained up and get going. The business side of roofing can come at a later stage once they decide if they want to take roofing further. Roofing should be a two-year, not a three-year apprenticeship; go through the practical stuff, get in with a good company, then do an online course for the business side of things – if you want to.”

“Also, the reality is that the best roofers aren’t interested in writing or doing paperwork. They want to work with their hands outside. And the longer you keep them inside doing paperwork, the less interested they’re going to become and the less they’ll take in.”

Finding staff… and keeping them Nathan trained all three of his ‘main guys’ before he started up Top Notch, and they all came to him. I didn’t go to them, he says. That says a lot about how Nathan likes to work and how he treats his team members.

“We go out of our way to provide a good working environment. I don’t encourage overtime or weekend work, and we actively try to promote family over everything else,” he says. “We make time to talk to them about work or life – the kettle’s always on, or there’s a beer in the fridge if they want to chat about anything. It’s very much like family. Our office is in our house, and we very much have an open-door policy.”

Another policy Nathan tries to stick to is not to do ‘away’ jobs – because most of his team have young families. “We keep things local so they can get home at a good hour every night. That was part of the reason I left Auckland – because of the extra hours. I was getting up at five, leaving at six and not getting home until seven. Plus, there was the expectation of working weekends. It began to impact my mental wellbeing and on my family, and I didn’t want that for my guys.”

“I want Top Notch to provide a good place for others to train and learn.

The reality is there just aren’t enough decent roofers around, so we need to train people,” he says. “I really love teaching people stuff. I get huge satisfaction in paying back by training up the next generation.

HEALTHY HOMES

Deepening the conversation about healthy homes Many people in the housing sector are working hard to make sure that all people in Aotearoa New Zealand have a warm, dry, safe place to call home – essential for thriving communities. A new project is looking at how the way we talk about the issue can deepen understanding and inspire us to act for a better system.

In early March 2023, a group of researchers, communicators and managers convened for a day of training delivered by The Workshop – a small narrative research and strategy organisation. Many in the room had been working on healthy homes research and communication for decades. We were there because there is abundant evidence that warm, dry homes are a fundamental determinant of individual and collective wellbeing as well as a lowcarbon future.

We also know that the technologies, policies and approaches needed to improve Aotearoa New Zealand’s current poor standing in home health are available and proven.

Despite this, the changes needed in policy, resourcing and practice to make this happen are happening very slowly, if at all.

Narrative research shows us that how people talk about issues – our narratives – can change how others think and act. The Workshop was engaged by Wellington Regional Healthy Housing Group (WRHHG) to identify more-helpful ways of talking about home health to deepen the public conversation and demonstrate support for changes that will make the biggest difference in our homes and across our sector.

The research team The 1-day training is one element of a 3-year Healthy Homes Narrative Communication Action Research project led by WRHHG. The project is funded via the BRANZ Building Research Levy and Todd Foundation and draws on the resources of WRHHG member organisations implementing the action part of the equation. The research team brings together experts from The Workshop and He Kāinga Oranga (the Housing and Health Research Programme, University of Otago).

Action research The project targets systems and behaviour change for improved performance of residential buildings by changing the way we communicate about the relationship between buildings and wellbeing. It will help the building industry to provide warmer, drier buildings for New Zealanders by creating an enabling environment where the broad New Zealand public value warmer, drier homes for all, and understand and support the policy

A first step in the research programme – a Healthy Homes Narrative Survey – was conducted in July to October 2022 with a sample of 104 people from the general public.

The survey explored how people talk about the relationship between the physical home and health/wellbeing – how they think about who is responsible for keeping or making homes healthy and how people talk about healthy homes through lived experience and identity.

The experience (or lack) of choice and agency around living in a healthy home was a recurring theme. Particularly, reduced choice due to affordability (of what/how to buy, rent, renovate or maintain) was talked about across different ethnicities and by renters, homeowners and landlords. However, renters’ responses more often and more forcefully expressed lack of choice and agency.

What the survey found The survey indicated a widespread awareness of the impact of a physical home on holistic and collective wellbeing. Respondents recognised the importance of a warm and dry home in supporting physical health – including conditions like asthma – but also talked about the stress of living in a cold or damp home and the impact on social wellbeing and dignity. The language used to talk about homes was often emotive and reflected a holistic sense of wellbeing (or lack of wellbeing). Responses include ‘our homes are our stability for our families’, ‘our safe haven’ and ‘sanctuary’. A lack of warmth and dryness is experienced as ‘emotional[ly] draining’ and ‘[doesn’t] feel like home’.

Most respondents (77.5%) either agreed or strongly agreed with the statement, ‘On average homes in New Zealand are not very warm and dry by international standards’. Text answers demonstrated that the age of New Zealand houses, cold temperatures and damp climate, and poor quality building materials were perceived as causal factors in this.

Previous research has demonstrated that most Kiwis care a lot about the wellbeing of their fellow humans even though narratives dominant in media and politics often suggest otherwise. Our survey results were consistent with this – 88% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed with the statement, ‘As a nation we need to make sure everyone in New Zealand has a comfortable, warm and dry home including by having appropriate legislation’. Most respondents believed responsibility for ensuring home health lay primarily or largely with government.

The findings demonstrate a sense of collective responsibility and an awareness of

The survey finding that Māori respondents were less likely than people of other ethnicities to trust or access support from central and (to a lesser degree) local government in relation to improving home health can help inform thinking about how to ensure support for home health is equitably available.

Next steps Drawing on findings from the survey along with other research, a WRHHG communications group has engaged with The Workshop to develop evidence-based messages to deepen understanding and inspire action. These messages and the narratives for change approach broadly will be tested across a range of communications channels and activities of WRHHG members and allies in three iterative action research cycles over 2023–2025.

The action research component will track uptake and impact of the approach through the three research cycles to refine messages and tactics and produce tested communications tools and resources for public use.

Together, we will create a future in which warm, dry and comfortable homes enable all New Zealanders to contribute, connect and thrive.

New Zealand Steel has been busy over the last 12 months, helping to secure a more sustainable future of steel making in New Zealand with an Electric Arc Furnace through a co-funded deal with the NZ Government.

New Zealand Steel will build a new $300M Electric Arc Furnace at its steelworks at Glenbrook within the next three years as part of the move to lower carbon production.

Chief Executive Robin Davies says the significant investment will reduce Glenbrook’s carbon footprint by 800,000 tonnes from day one – the same as taking approximately 300,000 cars off the road permanently.

“That’s a reduction of over 45% in New Zealand Steel’s emissions – or a total of 1% of New Zealand’s total annual emissions. It also sets the platform for further carbon reductions and is a significant step towards our goal of net zero by 2050.

“These reductions will come from replacing Glenbrook’s existing oxygen steelmaking furnace and two of the four coal fuelled kilns.

“An electric arc furnace makes sense when there’s enough affordable renewable energy and scrap steel available, a way to get that scrap steel to site, and the right policy settings. We’ll firm up the details of the different aspects of the project over the coming months but crucially, New Zealand has all these essential enablers in place.

“A reliable supply of firmed renewable energy is critical to this initiative and we’re delighted by the pioneering and creative partnership with Contact Energy to provide a competitive and innovative supply agreement. The electric arc furnace provides New Zealand Steel with significantly more production flexibility which means we can scale down production at times of peak demand or supply shortages.

Mr Davies says New Zealand Steel and the Government will jointly invest total capital and transition costs of around $300M in this landmark partnership to shrink Glenbrook’s carbon footprint.

“The Government will contribute up to $140M through the Government Investment in Decarbonising Industry, or GIDI fund, administered by EECA, as a co-investment.

This project would not happen otherwise.

This is a bold breakthrough initiative by the Government – but it’s the right one, especially when you see the carbon reduction dividend that helps the country meet its global decarbonisation targets under the Paris Agreement.

New Zealand Steel will commit the additional $160M, which includes the planned investment at Glenbrook to underpin the future of steelmaking in New Zealand. The immediate focus is to move at pace over coming months to confirm the remaining critical aspects of the new operation, including the relevant regulatory approvals.

The Managing Director and CEO of New Zealand Steel’s parent company, BlueScope, Mr Mark Vassella attended the announcement with the Prime Minister and says the co-investment is a landmark deal that showed the power of well-constructed public/private partnerships or investments.

“New Zealand Steel and the Government should be very proud of their initiative and the hard work that has led to today’s announcement,” Mr Vassella says.

Mr Davies says: “Steel is infinitely recyclable and this model will make New Zealand as close to self-sufficient as possible using renewable energy to recycle domestic scrap steel, rather than shipping it offshore.

“This project is a partnership that would never have happened without the support of the Government and the other key contributor Contact Energy who recognised the potential and had the commitment to help make it happen.

“This is a pragmatic response that not only sustains our critical domestic steel supply, but also provides a collaborative approach with government and industry to be world leaders in lower emissions steel.”

New Zealand Steel, our country’s sole producer of flat rolled steel products, manufactures and markets a range of products for the roofing sector. Their COLORSTEEL® brand is one many of you will be familiar with, along with ZINCALUME®.

Their steel is also used across the country for steel framing (AXXIS®) and structural beams.

Specifically, for our industry, the importance of a domestic supply is vital. This investment is key to ensuring key products continue to be produced locally, and the EAF will mean that the steel itself will out perform the world average in terms of embodied carbon, enabling New Zealand Steel to produce steel with an average embodied carbon per tonne

of 1.6 tonnes CO2/tonne steel (the world average is 1.9 tonnes CO2/tonne steel). The New Zealand Steel published Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for steel products will be updated in the future to reflect this dramatic shift in production method.

Another benefit of the EAF, is the establishment of a significant domestic scrap steel recycling loop, avoiding the cost and carbon miles of exporting about half of NZ’s scrap steel – about 300,000 tonnes a year.

It’s great to know that in the future, the steel you recycle on site, could then make it back to the mill and see life again as a brand new roof somewhere else across the country.

Hands on for H1 With decades of research into thermal insulation, structural strength, internal moisture and related topics, BRANZ is well placed to give practical advice about some recent questions we’ve heard around H1 compliance.

There is nothing revolutionary in the building materials and techniques required to comply with the new Acceptable Solutions and Verification Methods for Building Code clause H1 Energy efficiency. Houses have been designed, consented and constructed this way in Aotearoa New Zealand for years. What is different is that the materials and techniques are being brought fully into mainstream construction.

Key principles to follow This means that more than a few people will be doing things they haven’t done before. For any given project, following a few key principles will help: • Choose the most appropriate compliance option for that project.

Where using the schedule method seems fraught with difficulty, the calculation or modelling methods offer greater flexibility.

• Choose the right roof and wall framing options.

• Choose the right building materials or elements.

• Know where to find key information such as construction R-values.

• Know what’s not in the new H1 documents that you need to be aware of.

With roofs, for example, using the schedule method of compliance, all roofs require a construction R-value of R6.6. If this is a challenge, say for a particular skillion roof, the calculation or modelling method could be used. These allow – with some limits – a lower R-value in the roof if the R-values of other building elements are increased to compensate.

• Mixed use buildings over 300 m2 that include housing and nonhousing classified uses such as those with commercial spaces on the ground floor and residential above – multiple classified uses – may be consented using multiple pathways. The commercial space on the ground floor may be designed according to H1/AS2 or H1/VM2, and residential floors above may be designed according to H1/AS1 or H1/VM1.

• Another interesting mixed-use situation is buildings that include industrial and non-industrial uses such as commercial. Here, only the non-industrial part of the building needs to meet the H1 Energy efficiency requirements. However, the total size of the building – the area of occupied space including the industrial part – determines whether to use H1/AS1 (VM1) or H1/AS2 (VM2). For example, for a large industrial warehouse with a small office, the small office would not be able to use H1/AS1 or VM1 as the total area of occupied space of the entire building is over 300 m2.

What’s not in the new H1 documents

The gains are worth it

The new Acceptable Solutions and Verification Methods take a big step in the right direction in keeping our buildings warm, but they haven’t fully considered the risk of buildings overheating. (The need to consider overheating and tips for how to do this are briefly referred to in H1/AS1 section 2.3 – future Building Code changes are likely to address this in much more detail.) Overheating is a risk that BRANZ scientists are very aware of – in fact, several BRANZ research projects have found this is already a serious problem.

There is no doubt that the changes being introduced will be a challenge for practitioners who have in the past aimed for Building Code compliance on their project, without going much further. For example, the roof construction R-values are twice or more the previous requirements. The benefits in the changes are substantial too.

Designers need to think carefully about reducing the risk of overheating and the increased energy costs and occupant discomfort this brings. Avoiding overheating requires careful attention to: • shade devices – particularly considering the northern and western side of houses • ventilation – ideally cross-ventilation, but other types such as stack ventilation are also useful • glazing – the size and location of windows and glazing specification, including the solar heat gain coefficient (see Solar heat gain coefficient for windows in Build 189, pages 36–37).

Another big concern of BRANZ scientists is internal moisture, especially the risks of moisture passing from the living areas in a house through to the wall assembly or roof space. Condensation in these areas can lead to mould, rot and corrosion, which can be bad for occupant health and material durability.

MBIE modelling indicates that the new insulation requirements will reduce the heating energy requirements in new homes by 30–50% depending on the housing type and climate zone. That’s an achievement the industry can be proud to be part of.

TRAINING UPDATE

The continuing evolution of apprenticeship training At the heart of any successful training program is a commitment to continuous improvement. Based on feedback from apprentices and employers, Vertical Horizonz (VHNZ) block courses are being reimagined to include more hands-on, practical activities.

“We know,” says Andy Ellis, one of VHNZ’s Auckland-based trainers, “that learners tend to retain more knowledge when they engage in practical activities rather than just theoretical classroom learning, so these changes will help to engage our learners.”

The new-look roofing block courses at VHNZ will cover topics built as non-unit standard modules essential to support apprentices in their learning. The modules will include: • Wellbeing training, to promote the physical and mental health of trainees • Numeracy, a vital skill for any professional, will be covered under the “Measure Twice!” module • Chemical handling, which will enable

learners to manage hazardous substances safely • Roofing history to give learners a better appreciation of the trade’s evolution and its role in society.

In addition, we are currently working with Chris Polaczuk from CHASNZ to implement their ‘Work Should Not Hurt’ roofing programme, which aims to help reduce the chance of pain and injury while working.

“In addition to these new modules, our aim is that our apprenticeship training program will eventually include larger community projects that allow learners to apply their skills to real-life scenarios, which can then be gifted back to their local communities,” says Michelle Kesha, National Programmes and Apprenticeships Manager.

As well as reimagining the block courses, VHNZ has also extended its training whānau and now has an outstanding group of trainers with a wealth of roofing experience and

relevant business ownership experience. We believe it is essential to have trainers who are passionate about training and can connect with trainees.

Paul Stanley-Boden, one of our South Island-based trainers, says, “Being in a position to be able to pass my skills and knowledge onto the next generation of roofers is what drives me. Seeing them learn and grow during their apprenticeship is hugely rewarding.”

TRAINING UPDATE

Waihanga Ara Rau – the Workforce Development Council for Construction and Infrastructure Waihanga Ara Rau, the Workforce Development Council for Construction and Infrastructure, is reviewing the New Zealand Certificate in Roofing, working closely with the Roofing Association of New Zealand (RANZ) and other stakeholders to get feedback from the industry and make sure the qualification continues to meet the current and future needs of the roofing industry.

The review is also an excellent chance to explore whether any other qualifications or micro-credentials are needed to support learning pathways in the roofing sector. This includes pre- and post-apprenticeship training requirements that support people to get into the trade and have a great career.

A significant new development for the review is the introduction of ‘skill’ standards, which

their understanding and skill development.

will replace ‘unit’ standards in vocational education. Skill standards give industry more influence and control to shape how their workforce gets qualified.

Unlike unit standards, skill standards can be linked to a specific qualification. When they are linked to a qualification, education providers must use them as the building blocks of their programmes. This means that learning and assessment will be consistent for every apprentice and that industry can be confident that everyone has accessed the same high standard of training.

The qualification and skill standards are currently being developed, with a plan to have the review of Roofing qualification completed in September this year.

Q Where are you based?

A Horowhenua.

Q Years in roofing?

A 24 years.

Q How did you get started?

A It’s a family business. I left school at 17, and I’m still here.

Q Family nucleus?

A Married with two kids and a naughty dog.

Q What motivates you?

A Seeing a challenging job finished and watching staff grow their skills.

Q What do you do day to day?

A Quoting, ordering materials, site meetings and measure-ups, training staff, and on-site installation.

Q Favourite products/brand? Why? A ColorCote and ColorSteel are both excellent products. My main supplier only stocks it. My favourite profile for installation would be a trapezoid, as profile flashings have more diversity than corrugate. And it goes on a lot quicker than tray roofing.

Q Favourite roof?

A My favourite roof to install would be a five-hipper corrugate, no steeper than 25 degrees. The most memorable roof I have installed would be a 65-degree roof with 14 valleys.

Q Favourite beach?

A Waipipi. My parents recently moved there after my father retired from 50 years of roofing.

Q Favourite movie?

A Die Hard.

Q Favourite brew o’ beer or wine?

A Export Gold, not craft beer.
