Tangible hope Following a relatively wonderful summer weather-wise for most, your autumn 2024 issue of RoofLink® magazine has plenty to offer you heading towards the cooler months.

Check out Roof Bay of Island’s project story on the Civic Centre of Whangarei’s roof on page 26-27. That’s a community contribution and legacy to be proud of – congratulations to the team.

Giving back to others is said to be great for our own sense of wellbeing, so it’s exciting timing to launch a new RANZ strategic partnering with I Am Hope. One of the charity’s ambassadors and league legend, Richie Barnett, will be joining us for the RANZ 2024 Conference (see page 8). He’ll be giving a keynote address on mentoring young people. This represents a valuable area of insight for the future of our roofing sector.

Richie will also be highlighting the role of I Am Hope in supporting our rangatahi (young people), and we will have some funfundraisers included in a few of the conference elements for the charity too. Find out more about the RANZ partnership and the trailblazing I Am Hope organisation and Gumboot Friday initiative on page 16.

RANZ is celebrating its 30th this year! In line with the over 70% vote when put to members, for the first time the annual conference is set to be held offshore, on Australia’s Gold Coast.

This year will see the new two-year term of the RANZ Executive come into play, with the existing RANZ Executive Committee continuing to serve you all (see page 35), with elections not happening until next year.

RANZ governance team is coming up soon on 22 April in Napier. To coincide with their board meetings, a series of these RANZ regional events is being gradually rolled out - see details on page 11. CEO Autumn 2024 It’s been an interesting start to the year as we watch and cope with all the changes the new government has instigated. They are coming to terms with what they want and don’t want from the previous government and what they want to implement.

What is apparent is that the economy is going to take some time to recover from all that has occurred and is occurring globally and locally.

Just as we said during Covid times, know your numbers and plan where you realistically think your business will be in the future.

you use a smaller headcount as your solution, especially apprentices. If your forecasts have you continuing with similar volumes, well done. Currently, consents have been tracking to be down 30 percent year on year overall.

This will be more in some areas and less in others. For some of our older members, they have seen these sorts of corrections before.

Talk with your professional advisers if you haven’t already, and sense check your current position and do some forecasting with scenarios using assumptions as to where you will be. Ask yourself, what do I need to do if work volumes drop by 30 percent? I am not saying that’s where we will land – it may be less, and it could be more. Have you considered other income streams to support your business and keep your teams busy?

Also, use credit reports to assess how your customers are doing. These reports are an excellent tool to track payment trends. You’re doing business. Friendships are second place here. That said, if you notice some debtor creep, take action, and don’t wait. Many of you own your debtors and have set the boundaries as to payment requirements.

Please always use the Construction Contracts Act when making payment claims. It is easy and is one of the best tools you can utilise.

You can most definitely use the CCA for residential work. It is not solely for commercial work.

It has been shown that the smartest businesses keep training their people. Please consider other areas of your business before

Construction Accord Transforms Following a Cabinet decision late last year, Ministers have decided to close Industry Transformation Plan Programmes, including the Construction Sector Accord’s Transformation Plan 2022-2025. Whilst the Transformation Plan stops, the Construction Sector Accord is to continue in a different form.

The construction sector remains an important part of the NZ economy, and the government has reinforced its commitment to continue its partnership with industry. This means continued engagement on cross-sector opportunities, emerging issues, and bringing a more focused industry voice to Government priorities across housing and infrastructure sectors.

The Transformation Plan work programme has made significant progress in supporting health, safety and wellbeing, workforce, client leadership, innovation, and environment initiatives across the sector.

While existing Transformation Plan contracts are finishing, Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment (MBIE) is supporting the process to close or handover initiatives, where possible, ensuring the Accord’s momentum is maintained to lift performance and productivity across this critical sector.

The government intends to retain the sector leadership and engagement platform established through the Construction Sector Accord to build on the progress achieved over the last few years through this cross-sector partnership. The current Accord Steering Group co-chairs (Tracey Ryan and Andrew Crisp) are working with MBIE and the Building and Construction Minister to determine what the refreshed Construction Sector Accord leadership and engagement will look like.

RANZ REGIONAL EVENTS

RANZ Regional events The RANZ voluntary Executive Committee hold 4-5 meetings a year to conduct the governance of RANZ. To make the most of these gatherings, a series of RANZ regional events have been initiated to provide networking and educational opportunities for RANZ members and wider roofing communities. Last year, the meetings were held in Ōtepoti Dunedin and Tauranga.

For RANZ members, these events offer the opportunity to meet with fellow members of the RANZ Executive and discuss issues they would like RANZ advocacy or resource support on, as well as gain network support. It’s also an excellent opportunity to invite roofers who aren’t yet RANZ members to hear about the benefits to the whole sector and the support RANZ offers towards higher standards in NZ roofing.

The next event in the series will be held in Napier on 22nd April. As we all know, this region has been through a lot recently, so this event will also act as a timely show of support from RANZ to our Hawkes Bay roofing community. Please help spread the word and share it with your roofing contacts from the area.

Aspect Roofing – aiming high Aspect Roofing is a well-established family-owned enterprise that has been prominent in Auckland’s roofing sector for over 15 years. Founded by Lloyd and Kate Berghan in 2007, the company’s humble beginnings, with just two small crews, have since blossomed into a formidable operation boasting over 20 crews, numerous project managers, and a substantial team handling pricing and administrative duties.

Specialising in a wide array of long-run roofing solutions, from traditional corrugate to contemporary architectural tray designs, Aspect Roofing has cultivated robust partnerships with builders, development firms, and leading roofing suppliers. Yet, amidst its many achievements, Aspect Roofing attributes its success to its tight-knit team of skilled professionals, many of whom have remained loyal since its inception, underscoring the positive workplace culture fostered within the organisation. Committed to delivering exceptional customer service from project initiation to completion, Aspect Roofing places paramount importance on delivering top-tier workmanship with meticulous attention to detail.

Reflecting on his 10-year tenure at Aspect Roofing, General Manager Kyle Golder says he witnessed first-hand a pivotal moment in the company’s history when Lloyd and the team clinched their most substantial contract with Universal Homes, laying the groundwork for its exponential growth trajectory.

“At that juncture, our team included a modest five individuals, including myself, overseeing four roofing teams. We now have four full-time QS staff, a sales manager, operations and health and safety managers, two full-time admin staff, a maintenance crew of three, six project managers and upwards of 70 roofers, both employed and contractors.

Subsequently, our strategic focus revolved

around fortifying our installer base, a task not devoid of challenges, as the rapid rate of expansion occasionally strained our operational capabilities.’’

In tandem with their clients’ growth, Aspect embarked on initiatives, such as developing robust health-and-safety protocols, implementing work-management software, and enlisting critical managerial personnel, pivotal in enabling them to keep pace with their clients’ evolving needs.

“To service the needs of our ever-increasing, high-volume residential clients, we had to ensure our operation was geared towards maximum efficiency. Every job was broken down and processes refined to see where we

could trim back time on site, standardise orders, and optimise personnel. As we picked up other similar clients – Fletcher Living North and Central and Golden Homes Auckland in particular – we were able to get this mode of working down to a fine art, a single delivery of all sheets and flashings, final barges folded on site, and little to no wastage.”

In 2021, the company bought its own Thalmann folder. “Manufacturing our own flashings has given us an incredible boost in productivity by cutting down wait times for flashings, which has immeasurably changed the face of our business. Our streamlined process allows us to keep our pricing tight and our clients coming back. We aim to retain 100% of work for clients with whom we have developed close partnerships, so we continue refining our install processes on a job-by-job basis to constantly improve and keep in step with their own innovations.”

Central to Aspect’s success is their people, with all six project managers boasting extensive backgrounds in roofing while commanding immense respect as adept people managers. Leveraging this solid foundation of experienced management, the company has pursued broader organisational objectives that have propelled the company forward. “Our installers, both employed and contracted, have evolved alongside us, exhibiting significant advancements in workmanship quality compared to our early days.”

Consistency in quality standards and the complexity of flashing work now permeate throughout the company, a testament to our collective progress. Project managers are assigned jobs based on geographical territories, and they keep their workload close to home to ensure they can work efficiently rather than spending hours each day stuck in traffic, allowing them to get home to their families as early as possible after their work day is over.

“Each project manager looks after his own installer crews, who are also based in his

home area – here at Aspect, we take a family-first approach, and that extends to all our employees and contractors. We want them to be close to home so they get there at a reasonable time each day to relax and spend time with their loved ones. We believe this approach and the consistency of work available contribute to our excellent retention rate, with the bulk of our contract crews working for us full-time for many years.”

The expansion of Aspect’s business has also extended to its pricing team, which burgeoned from a single quantity surveyor to a cohesive unit of four under the stewardship of another longstanding team member, Myles Brock, who has been an integral part of the company since 2014. Many of the company’s internal processes owe their efficiency to

Myles’ process-driven approach and unwavering attention to detail.

In 2020, Aspect Roofing employed its first dedicated sales and business development person, Katy O’Neill. Like the rest of the management team, she came with a long history in the roofing industry, both as an installer and for various roofing suppliers.

Katy has bought new relationships to the company and is relentlessly focussed on strengthening existing relationships with clients, suppliers, architects, and others throughout the construction industry.

Aspect's new home The new Aspect Roofing office and workshop occupies a double site in the heart of Marua Road – a bustling commercial hub on the fringe of the Ellerslie residential zone. The project was conceived as a new home for the growing in-house team at Aspect Roofing and to facilitate a purpose-built space for future manufacturing capabilities.

The building, formerly a block of four offices and a mechanics workshop, retains its original structure. However, it has been completely renovated both inside and out to meet the specific needs of the Aspect Roofing business.

The exterior cladding – Roofing Industries Eurostyle Epic in Colorsteel Tidal Drift Matte - has been installed by Aspect’s own specialist craftsmen, allowing the freedom to experiment with variable widths and custom trays. This was a significant project, as the existing cladding contained asbestos, and there was no stormwater connection, so significant earthworks and builders works were required before we could commence the exterior.

Aspect was fortunate to have a fantastic builder who went above and beyond to give them a completely flat substrate – the smooth finish is a testament to this diligent prep work. The cladding took around four weeks to complete, with company owner Lloyd and tray specialists Leigh Conlon and Jordan Mickley carrying out the work.

We used three set tray widths – small, medium, large – laid them randomly across each section of wall, then folded a custom width tray for the final panel on each face. This was to ensure we could really randomize the layout and not end up making a pattern. The openings are flashed with an infinity pocket detail so the jambs run into the profile.

This project was a huge learning experience for the team, using flashing details they hadn’t used before and figuring out the set-out of the variable trays. Leigh and Jordan say they learned an incredible amount through this install – even after almost 20 years of roofing. “As always, our supply partner Roofing Industries did an incredible job custom folding all the trays, and we are grateful for their constant support,” says Lloyd.

WHY DO OUR CUSTOMERS LOVE US? “At Makuch Roofing, we are strong believers in having the right tool for the job and have purchased numerous specialty tools from Fribesco; improving our quality and efficiency on site.

Our purchase of a portable site folder TBS 100 has been a game changer for the team. Initially bought for a large standing seam job to fold ends of sheets, we now find the team using it on-site weekly. On a recent project - the roof had 15 square roof ducts coming through it. RANZ Partnering with I Am Hope Engaging our young people and ensuring a bright future for the roofing trade are key topics of relevance for the roofing sector.

Sports legend and I Am Hope ambassador Richie Barnett will be joining us at the RANZ 2024 Conference (see details p8) on the Gold Coast. He will share his insights on mentoring and the role of his charity, with which RANZ is embarking on a strategic partnership.

The majority of our RANZ members are either employers and/or parents of youth who are at risk, this opportunity to hear Richie speak will help give you the tools to support them.

As has been well-publicised in recent years, mental health is particularly pertinent in New Zealand’s construction sector. The tragically high suicide rates of our youth in Aotearoa, New Zealand, compared with other developed countries (second highest) is shocking and has far-reaching, devastating impacts. The work of I Am Hope helps to destigmatise mental distress (a leading obstacle to suicide prevention) while resourcing young people with professional support when it counts.

Events, Marketing and Partnerships Manager - I Am Hope / Gumboot Friday.

Michaiah, in your own words, give us a little information about Gumboot Friday and how does it connect with I am Hope?

The I Am Hope Foundation is the charity Mike King set up in 2009 originally under the name The Nutters Club, which then became The Key to Life. But when we asked the young people we help what we represent to them and what we should be named, they came up with I Am Hope, so here we are. I Am Hope is the charity foundation, and Gumboot Friday is the platform through which we provide free counselling for all young people 25 and under around New Zealand. Why Gumboot Friday? Mike was providing free counselling sessions to young people and paying for them himself. But, when it quickly grew to a $10,000-a-month

exercise, and he realised a huge need in this area, he and a friend came up with the idea to create a fundraising day so he could continue to provide the free counselling.

Gumboots represent how life feels when you live with depression and mental health issues; life feels heavy and sticky, and it gets hard to walk, just like being stuck in the mud.

But when you put on Gumboots, you can walk through the mud a bit easier. 100% of the money donated to Gumboot Friday funds the counselling sessions; in fact, we cover the cost of the administration of that through I Am Hope. We are now providing approximately 3,500 sessions a month, costing us about $500,000 a month!

I Am Hope also does school programs.

Currently, we are going into Primary Schools around New Zealand with our program Little People Big Feelings, where we talk to kids about feelings and how it is normal to feel sad, angry and upset and the inner critic, yes we all have that voice that tells us we are no good. We are working to change attitudes around mental health so that future generations are in a much better place to take on life so we don’t need to be the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff, and families don’t have to go through the trauma of losing their young ones to suicide.

What is your role within the organisation?

I am the Events, Marketing and Partnerships Manager. I love using my 20 years of experience in events and marketing for something I passionately believe in. It was a no-brainer for me when I got headhunted for the role; I said yes, of course, as I believe in what Mike and Jo (his wife) have achieved and have so much respect for them.

How long have you been working there?

I have been here for six months, although it feels much longer. In that time, we have already done so much! As they say, time flies when you are having fun, right?

What do you like most about working for Gumboot Friday?

Mental Health is something that has impacted my life from a young age. I have had my struggles. I grew up in a heavily religious family who didn’t understand me or the way I think, and this caused me to feel very lonely as a child and young person to the point where I was suicidal in my mid-teens. I couldn’t get any help, even after a suicide attempt that was stopped by the police! They just gave me a script for antidepressants and sent me on my way. I then self-medicated with alcohol for a few years until I had a wakeup call and stopped drinking at 18 years of age. That’s when I started to look after myself and started my journey of self-care. Even after my partner committed suicide when I was 22, I only got two counselling sessions and then again was left to fend for myself, dealing with the grief and aftermath of that traumatic event on my own.

I work for Gumboot Friday and I Am Hope because I want to ensure no young person has to go through what I went through on their own. I want to ensure our young people have support and know they can talk about their struggles without fear of judgement.

I want them to have a safe space to talk about the issues they are facing - of which we could have no idea what the young generations face today!

What makes the organisation unique?

We are entirely community-funded – we still get no government funding. And we believe ALL kids need access to support regardless of their ethnicity, background, sexual orientation, location, or parents’ financial status.

What have been some memorable fundraising ideas that people have done?

We have this remarkable woman, Paula, who is 70 years old and has just completed a tour around New Zealand jumping into all the lakes to raise money and awareness for the lives lost to suicide. She completed over 180 minutes in freezing-cold water over a ten-day period and raised over $5,000!

We have had epic people doing all sorts of intense physical challenges, such as running for 24 hours in the Karangahake Gorge tunnel, running for 101 hours in the Dead Cow Gully; breaking a world record and raising funds for us, 24 hours of non-stop yoga; 16 people shaving their heads at once.

How can people get involved?

The easiest way to get involved is to come up with a fundraising idea and then create a Givealittle page, selecting either I Am Hope or Gumboot Friday as the charity you want to support, and then share the page link around your networks.

Anything else that you’d like to add?

We have Gumboot Friday coming up on the 1st November and need to get as many people supporting the cause to wear Gumboots on the day, sharing with their friends and family, reminding people it is coming up, and donating, so please share it far and wide!

Tell us more about the nationwide primary school outreach, Little People Big Feelings?

Little People Big Feelings is our current school program. We are travelling around the country going into primary schools delivering this to our tamariki as we believe if we can teach the kids of New Zealand that feelings such as sadness, doubt, over-thinking and that pesky inner critic we all have is normal.

Everyone has these feelings and self-doubt.

Ensuring they know that talking about how they feel is good; it is just a conversation, then we can impact the future of this country and reduce the terrible numbers around youth suicide and mental health issues.

How many schools has this project reached?

We have already been to hundreds of schools around New Zealand and are fully booked up for the rest of the year!

What has been the success rate of this project?

We believe the success rate is something that will play out in years to come, but it is always received incredibly well, and we have had numerous reports of young kids opening up to their whanau and teachers about issues they have been struggling with on their own including feeling suicidal, which meant they were able to get the help and support they needed before it was too late!

Certificate in Roofing graduation ceremony July 2019 saw the inception of the New Zealand Certificate in Roofing, which replaced the National Certificate and brought roofing apprenticeships up to par with apprenticeships in the established construction trades. Many apprentices have now completed the programme and have graduated. RANZ felt that it was appropriate that this achievement should be recognised, not just with a certificate from the education establishment but also by the wider roofing industry.

To this end, RANZ has partnered with Vertical Horizonz, NZMRM, WMAI and COLORSTEEL®, with support from Bremick*, to hold a graduation ceremony and present the new graduate roofers with their qualifications, plus a gift of a set of high-quality trade tools worth over $200, along with a pack from Bremick and a digital subscription to RoofLink, connecting them to RANZ.

The first of these celebrations was held in Christchurch on 14th December last year, with further events planned. In attendance were RANZ President Jenny Maxwell, RANZ Vice-President Paul StanleyBoden, and RANZ Executive Committee member Mark Bishop, along with VH trainee Advisors Mark Handley and Fabian Chalap.

A large group of friends and family supported the graduates, and all involved felt that the occasion was very successful. Ventilation building retrofit project Installing insulation in a low-pitched roof of an existing house is tricky.

BRANZ is using its experimental ventilation building to look for answers.

How many of you have encountered a homeowner complaining of a ‘leaking roof’ that is actually due to internal moisture and condensation? The importance of ventilation in New Zealand housing has, on the whole, not been well appreciated with sector developments in recent decades. The Building Research Association of New Zealand (BRANZ) are working on addressing potential knowledge-gaps through research, as the following article outlines. What do you think of their approach? The BRANZ ventilation research building has been the subject of many projects over the years. As well as the airtightness and ventilation research streams, it has also contributed in several other areas. Work has covered subfloor moisture and impacts of wind wash on subfloor insulation performance right through to roof space moisture and corrosion research.

With the site redevelopment under way, the opportunity has been taken to under-take a series of retrofit interventions to understand the optimal ways for improving the performance of existing buildings, keeping cost and disruption in mind. The focus, however, is on measurable achieved performance outcomes and mitigation of potential risks of moisture accumulation as the envelope is improved.

Time for a change With the steady pressure to improve the performance of new builds, it’s easy to ignore the elephant in the room – existing stock. The work on the BRANZ ventilation building is taking a staged approach by progressively improving aspects of the building while evaluating the benefits. This allows us to produce practical guidance for industry as the project progresses.

Roof the first of several steps One of the biggest challenges with existing buildings is tied to the predominance of relatively low-pitch roof construction. The main issue is getting enough insulation installed without running into potential moisture issues. As a first step, the ventilation building has undergone the installation of a warm roof assembly (see Cold roofs? Warm roofs? in Build 164) to mitigate this issue as well as exploring other benefits.

Previous work (see Optimal ventilation? in Build 180) demonstrated that the performance of heat recovery ventilation systems was compromised by installation in cold roof spaces, regardless of the style of heat exchanger or ducting. Generally, ducting should be kept inside the thermal envelope as much as practicable as the ability to insulate it is limited.

From a retrofit perspective, this is a fundamental problem as the alternative option of dropping the ceiling to provide space to install ducting is not going to be possible for most existing buildings.

The warm roof build-up For this work, a built-up warm roof has been implemented, as shown in Figure 1. The existing purlins have been removed and a plywood diaphragm installed. Over the top of this, a vapour barrier was installed and covered with 90 mm of rigid foam insulation. Completing the assembly was a conventional roof underlay, battens and a conventional metal roof deck.

The plywood diaphragm forms part of the airtightness layer of the building. Blocking was cut and fitted between the trusses at the top plate with gaps sealed by flexible acoustic sealant.

Care was made to give a good overlap between the blocking and top plate to maximise the reliability of the sealant join. Before fitting the ply, the external side of this blocking was covered with insulation to improve the performance of the resulting junction.

Because of how the roof is assembled, as the cladding reaches end of life, the insulation can be reused, maximising its useful life and minimising the carbon impact. Currently, the build is undergoing instrumentation upgrades before starting the measurement campaign.

Hybrid options being studied As well as studying the achieved performance of the warm roof, there is also a piece of experimental work looking at the limits of what can be added at the ceiling line, which is normally termed a hybrid assembly.

As more insulation is added at the ceiling line, there is the potential for moisture accumulation. Understanding where this could present a problem is dependent on several factors.

While the effects of additional insulation could be estimated with WUFI, there are significant uncertainties with boundary conditions and the ventilation rate in the roof cavity, so this needs to be done experimentally first. From here, a series of benchmarked WUFI simulations will be used to build a sensitivity analysis, which will provide a foundation for useful guidance for climate zones other than Wellington.

Next steps As we progress through the coming year, the various glazing and wall retrofit options will be tested in WUFI Plus – a whole-of-building version of WUFI – to inform the most practical way forward.

Here’s who they are… and a little bit about them.

Debbie Wickliffe is the Chairperson for New Zealand Women in Roofing, bringing with her a wealth of experience and dedication to advancing women in the roofing industry. She has been involved in the roofing industry for 18 years and has a track record of leadership. Debbie is poised to continue to lead the committee toward fostering a more empowering environment for women within the roofing industry. Her vision encompasses promoting skill development and professional growth for women in the field, focusing on education, mentoring, networking, and recruitment. Debbie loves the outdoors, and loves adventures and fishing. Her spare time is divided between family and friends and volunteering by giving back to the community.

Marcia Hintz, education lead at New Zealand Certified Builders, has over 30 years of experience in education and leadership, specialising in various construction industries.

As a former Quality and Compliance Manager and Workplace Trainer, she has spearheaded literacy, numeracy, and learner engagement initiatives. Marcia excels in developing tailored training solutions, leveraging her communication skills and industry knowledge. She chairs the Women’s Advisory Group for Con-COVE Tuhura, focusing on supporting career pathways for women within the Construction and Infrastructure sector. Olivia Larson is the South Island Sales Manager for Kingspan Thermakraft. Olivia started working in the roofing industry in March 2015 for Thermakraft as an Account Manager. Every day is different, she says, and she is grateful to work alongside many passionate, dedicated, and driven people. When Olivia heard about New Zealand Women in Roofing being established, she was keen to be a part of the initiative. She saw it as an exciting opportunity to help create and promote a network of women within the industry. Olivia enjoys being involved in leading the Christchurch branch with Rebecca Holland and the ability to create learning and networking opportunities for their members. She’s excited to see NZWiR continue to grow and thrive.

Liz Watson brings 22 years of hands-on building and infrastructure experience, starting as a labourer at 15. She holds RTW and STMS qualifications. From basic tools to traffic control and heavy machinery, she’s versatile, dubbing herself “Jackie of all trades.” In 2011, she entered roofing with partner Dan, co-owning Stone Roofing Limited. Awarded Roof Trainee of the Year in 2017 and Tradeswoman of the Year in 2019/2020, she’s a trailblazer. Liz is a Qualified Roofer in Metal tiles and Wall/Roof Cladding and a Roofing Trainer at Vertical Horizonz.

She is also a NAWIC National Councillor advocating for women in construction. Her work ethic and leadership embody equality and societal contribution.

Levern Thomas has worked as an Allied Health Care Professional in Podiatry for over 30 years. Despite the diversity of the two industries, the people skills she gained aided her in assisting in the running of her husband’s roofing business. Levern’s interest in NZWiR is not only to support her female staff members working within her company but also to recognise women in a maledominated industry. She believes that no matter where you are in life, you should inspire and empower the women around you.

Success is never reached alone, and wisdom and wealth are sweeter shared.

Deb Brown is based in Christchurch with her partner and a lively, blended family. Her 17-year journey in the construction industry began after leaving dairy farming. From managing the SI branch at Hume Doors to a successful tenure at CSR Building Products, including a Mitre 10 supplier win in 2019, she recently joined Masons as Territory Manager. Beyond roofing product roles, Deb engages in community initiatives and family activities.

Committed to New Zealand Women in Roofing, she’s been a member since 2018 and recently joined the committee, thrilled to contribute and connect with inspiring women in the roofing industry.

With nine-and-a-half years in roofing and a previous five-year stint in tourism, Marina Ralph brings a wealth of skills to her role at Metalcraft Roofing. Hailing from Western Australia and Milford Sound, her diverse background equipped her with a strong work ethic, cultural adaptability, attention to detail, and excellent planning and time management. Starting as a Customer Services Representative in Christchurch, Marina’s hard work propelled her to the position of Account Manager/Technical Representative. Sophia Kahukura has been in the Roofing Industry since 2009.

Starting with afterschool duties, she progressed through various administrative and customer-focused roles and now works as an Office Manager at CS Roofing Canterbury. During her time within the industry, Sophia has had many opportunities for professional development, which helped her refine existing skills and gain new knowledge. She is excited to use what she learns to contribute to the New Zealand Women in Roofing organisation.

Sophia values supportive work environments and recognises such support can come in many forms. Laura Cross has worked in the fastening industry since 2015, and her experience in the roofing industry started when she joined the Bremick team in 2021.

Civic Centre, Whangarei ROOFING COMPANY:

Roof Bay of Islands Whangarei’s new Civic Centre is a significant project that combined the installation of Dimondek 630 metal roofing, flat-panel Euramax cladding to different areas of the exterior of the building, and True Oak metal wall cladding from Roofing Industries in the interiors. Due to the broad extent of work undertaken in different areas of the building, it created the challenge of liaising with multiple trades throughout the build to ensure the project flowed smoothly – with the emphasis of not delaying other tradespeople. The project provided the opportunity to fully test the management skills of the whole team at Roof Bay of Islands, says GM Stefan Dawson. “Being directly involved in such a complex, intricate and community-oriented project enabled the company and all workers involved to further develop their skills and professional portfolios.”

“The main roof of the building was completed in DD630 concealed clipped roof with internal parapet walls in corrugate. The internal atrium is lined with True Oak corrugate, which, at 13 metres, created a technical challenge,” says Stefan. “We initially advised to build the atrium prior to the roof structure going on to give the opportunity to crane in full-length sheets. However, the construction sequence

resulted in the atrium being completed last. So, with most of the Centre completed, we then had to get the sheets inside the building and installed without any damage to completed finishes.”

There were other challenges, too. “On the roof, we had to do all side apron flashings at a minimum of 600-wide with a slope of five degrees, which made for interesting intersection points with head aprons, apex flashings and ridge junctions,” says Stefan.

The project’s design called for hand-folded facades with negative detail joins to all external membrane decks, flashing work to all visible floor nibs and beams, and concealed clipped parapet flashings to decks. Manufacturing the Euramax cladding within their own workshop, directly from coil, allowed for Roof BOI complete control over the turnaround time of all flashings and cladding panels, says Stefan. “Facade flashings had to be precisely made to have even spacing and 10mm negative detailed joins. The join soakers were installed, and each panel was individually measured. Measurements were sent back to the Roof BOI production team to manufacture and have ready for next-day installation.”

The weather also played its part. “The membrane contractors could not get any membrane on due to the persistent rain throughout the project, which was understandable but unfortunate. So, we had to install the roof and flashings without lined internal gutters and installed decks. Arse-about-face stuff, which was extremely challenging to co-ordinate transitions when the membrane product eventually went on.”

Despite the challenges, Stefan says his team raised their game to a new level, led by one of the company’s young team leaders. Only in his early twenties, Sam Nathan showed management skills above his years, with a fresh team of apprentices helping with the facade work.

"The team learnt how important documenting all conversations and directions with subbies and the main contractor was – both by email and inhouse job workflow system."

“It was a great learning experience for the whole team,” says Stefan.

“They all managed the job well, discovered the demands of commercial work, and had to manage themselves well ahead with other subbies to keep work flowing. They also learnt how important documenting all conversations and directions with subbies and the main contractor was – both by email and in-house job workflow system. When projects happen over a lengthy period, these recorded conversations prove to be priceless when questions are asked.”

Stefan is pleased with how the finished project turned out. “The facades look fantastic, and so does the roof. Unfortunately, as is the case with most roofs, the completed roof works will never be seen by the public,” says Stefan. “The clients were also very happy. As a result, we are currently engaged in a large housing project with the same client.”

RIGS Fascia Conversion Systems An innovative external solution for leaky internal gutter systems It took eight years and a whole lot of number-8 wire ingenuity, but now there’s a solution designed to replace Internal Fascia Gutter Systems that is both the highest quality form of maintenance and easier to retrofit compared to current methods.

Revamp Internal Gutter Systems or RIGS for short, is the patent pending brainchild of Mark Rountree, a fascia/gutter installer with more than 20 years’ experience.

“The leaky building crisis has now been going on for years and thousands of homeowners are still dealing with the consequences including repair costs, declining property values and health issues caused by exposure to mould.

“Leaky and overflowing internal gutters are often the culprit, usually caused by rusted out gutters, installation issues, faulty workmanship, or the natural settling of roof framing and foundations, exacerbated by higher-than-normal rainfalls we are now experiencing.

“I decided to take matters into my own hands and developed the RIGS Fascia Conversion System, a new external metal fascia product that can upgrade all types of internal fascia systems to an external system and prevent water damage with the least amount of fuss, and leaving little to no evidence that the home once had an internal gutter system.”

Lockdown ingenuity RIGS was invented in Mark’s garage workshop. The Covid lockdowns provided time away from running his installation company to concentrate fully on the system. Armed with six years of R&D, 20 years plus of installation experience, a grinder, a welder, skateboard wheels, bike chains, and part of a Harley Davidson gearbox, the first RIGS prototype was born.

The RIGS Rollforming machine RIGS includes the option of four finished fascia sizes to cater for most soffit framing drop heights and all roof types that have been installed on homes since the early 1970s. The system includes all bracketry, corner soakers and the accessories required to suit all four fascia sizes.

Manufacturing is based in Auckland and the fascia stacks compactly, with up to three times standard house lots (approx 70 metres each) fitting into a standard sized wooden crate, making freight costs efficient.

Limited roof work Another benefit of the RIGS design is that unlike other methods, in most cases you don’t have to get involved in lifting the roofing or flashings to attach the fascia to the brackets as most of the work is done from the front and below. Specialist tools designed by Mark and supplied by RIGS include a soffit trimmer, that collects all the offcuts at the same time and a fascia slitting tool for those tricky areas where roof overhang is compromised. These tools save time and money!

Pergolas and other structures – no problem!

Pergolas often must be removed to install a new fascia and gutter, but with a RIGS retrofit, it usually stays put. Generally, a couple of acrow props are required to lower or lean out the structure enough to fit the fascia and spouting and then it is bolted back into place. For homeowners, this gives peace of mind as they don’t have to source another tradesperson to do this work.

Works with all previous metal fascia systems RIGS doesn’t discriminate – in fact, it has been tested and can replace all these systems whether it’s an internal or external fascia system including Taylor, Klass, Dimond, Triline, Marley, Metalcraft, Multifit, Interline, Steel & Tube and Bildon. RIGS also replaces the failing external powder coated fascia systems of the late 1990s and 2000s. The RIGS fascia panel doubles as a standard wood fascia cover in all four sizes.

Mark has also worked with an asbestos consultant and together designed a process for the cut back and removal of asbestos soffit linings, with certifiable training available.

And while we’re at it …

While installing RIGS, there’s also a great opportunity to install any required kickout or diverter flashings to wall connections and step-outs, as these are the most at-risk areas for water ingress and damage to internal wall framing.

RIGS adheres to the house footprint restrictions and daylightto-boundary regulations. If there’s a bird or vermin problem, installing RIGS custom designed flexible flashing is also an option.

The future is here – and it’s dry!

To date there hasn’t been a product that takes care of such a huge range of old building methods. You can use RIGS as a fascia cover for old timber fascia boards, revamping troublesome internal gutters and the replacement of all other failing external fascia systems.

The importance of bracing Important notice – bracing on scaffolds We are hoping to enhance awareness regarding essential safety measures associated with the safe erection of scaffold. Our aim is to provide educational insights for the betterment of our collective safety practices whilst also a reminder of the non-negotiables for industry.

The photos are from a non-member company, illustrating scaffolds that do not align with the recommended standards. It is our expectation that any reputable scaffold company adheres to best practices in scaffold construction.

A crucial aspect of scaffold stability is the inclusion of longitudinal bracing at minimum specified spacing. Refer to pages 85—88 of the General Practice Guide (GPG) for detailed guidelines on proper bracing practices. For Tube & Clip Scaffolding, the maximum longitudinal brace spacing is 4 bays. Similarly, for Proprietary Scaffolding, the maximum longitudinal brace spacing is 5 bays, unless specified otherwise in a manufacturer’s specification.

You can find a digital copy of the Good Practice Guidelines under Resources on the SARNZ website [QR code below].

Upon close inspection, it is evident that the showcased scaffolds lack the necessary bracing, with most of them lacking bracing altogether.

We note, these structures on site and had been approved as safe, it is important to note that they do not meet the standard requirements and were reported.

Sunscreen for dark skin: Do you really need it?

Have you ever heard that people with dark skin don’t need sunscreen? We debunk this dangerous myth and explore how to find the best sunscreen for dark skin.

New Zealand has among the highest rates of melanoma and other skin cancers in the world. And while those with fair or freckled skin are typically more susceptible to sun damage and skin cancer, there’s a dangerous misconception that those with dark skin aren’t at risk.

It’s true that melanoma and other skin cancers are less prevalent in those with darker complexions than in those with lighter complexions. But this does not mean people with dark skin are immune to sun damage.

Dark-skinned people can still get sunburned and develop sun spots or skin cancer. And deadly melanomas are still detected among these groups each year.

Unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of local studies on skin cancer rates in dark-skinned, Island, or indigenous people in New Zealand (or Australia)available at present. However, international research shows that in people of colour, skin cancers are often diagnosed at a more advanced stage. As such, treatment is more difficult, resulting in a higher mortality risk for these groups.

Read on to learn more about why sunscreen is still extremely important for those with darker complexions and how to choose the best sunscreen for dark skin.

Sunscreen for dark skin: why is it so important?

Before we dive into why sunscreen is important for people with dark skin, you may be curious to know where the ‘​people with dark skin don’t need sunscreen’ myth came from in the first place.

It all stems from the fact that people with darker complexions produce more melanin (the pigment that gives skin its colour) than those with lighter skin. Melanin helps to protect the skin against the sun by absorbing and distributing the harmful UV radiation in the surface layers, reducing the risk of cellular damage that can lead to skin cancer.

Although increased melanin in darker skin types offers some low level protection, it is certainly not a complete barrier against sun damage or skin cancer.

The bottom line: if you have skin, you need sunscreen Regardless of your skin tone, you need at least SPF 30 protection to guard your skin against harmful UV rays. At MoleMap, we recommend that all people wear SPF 50 sunscreen for the best protection against skin cancer.

The trickiest part about choosing the best sunscreen for dark skin is finding one that not only offers high level sun protection, but

that you’ll also love wearing every day. This means finding a formula that blends in seamlessly, complements your skin’s natural oil levels and doesn’t leave behind a chalky or milky residue.

Try invisible sunscreen for no white cast Invisible sunscreen goes on clear — or more accurately, almost clear — when applied to the skin, making it a great option to avoid a white cast or purple tinge on dark skin. This type of sunscreen uses zinc oxide nanoparticles so they are harder to see when they are spread onto the surface of the skin.

While invisible sunscreens may not be completely transparent on all darker skin types, they will often leave a much more seamless or sheer finish.

Go chemical-free with mineral sunscreen for dark skin Mineral sunscreen uses mineral ingredients such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide that sit on the skin’s surface, creating a physical barrier against the sun’s harmful UV rays.

Chemical sunscreens, on the other hand, absorb into the skin and convert UV rays into heat then release them from the body.

While chemical sunscreens tend to be easier to rub in on darker skin types, mineral formulas are less likely to clog your pores or irritate your skin. Mineral sunscreens can sometimes leave a white cast on dark skin so it may be helpful to look for formulations combined with light-weight moisturisers or serums like hyaluronic acid. These formulas will often have a thinner consistency, designed to rub in smoothly and dry clear – perfect for all day, every day wear.

How to best protect you skin from skin cancer No matter what your complexion, it’s crucial to be proactive about your sun protection to reduce your risk of developing skin cancer. Some of the best ways to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays include: •

Using a broad spectrum SPF 50 sunscreen, specially formulated for dark skin tones

•

Wearing sun protective clothing, including UPF 50+ hats and sunglasses

•

Seeking shade and avoiding direct sun exposure during peak UV periods

Do people with dark skin need regular skin checks?

Yes! In addition to appropriate sun protection, darker-skinned people should also check their skin regularly to monitor for changes, such as: •

Māori values in the workplace The sky’s the limit for businesses who retain good people: Using Māori concepts to lift workplace culture.

It’s no secret that keeping good people is critical to getting the job done and done well. With more building – and rebuilding – to be done following a spate of natural disasters and not enough people to do the work, attracting and retaining good people is crucial.

We know that recruiting and holding onto new employees is expensive and timeconsuming. Moreover, turnover negatively affects the productivity and morale of your employees.

But it’s not doom and gloom. The construction and infrastructure sector has become more inclusive over the years. More Māori and Pasifika are working in the construction and infrastructure industries, and diversity is growing across the board, which is excellent news.

But we need to retain these essential skilled people. So, how can we do better?

Applying simple Māori concepts can improve morale, worker involvement, health and safety, and productivity. Studies have shown that the championship of Māori values in the workplace can create a more inclusive environment in general, and this inclusivity makes for safer, happier, more productive workplaces.

Here are some ways that you can simply and effectively adopt Māori concepts for the benefit of your business and your people: Arahi mai i runga: Lead from the top Something worth doing must be led from the top. Without leadership buy-in, new ideas lack the guidance and support to succeed. It’s important that senior managers and supervisors are comfortable applying these concepts in the workplace and are committed to creating the environment for success.

Start by reviewing/developing your company values Kotahitanga, or uniting around a common purpose and shared values, creates solid and resilient teams that can rely on each other to get the job done. Your company values may include Māori values such as:

1. Manaakitanga: Caring for people.

3. Whanaungatanga: Building relationships Foster a sense of belonging and inclusion within your business, where everyone feels valued and supported as part of a larger whānau (family) network. Get to know your employees as people beyond just the work that they do. Invite their families to a work BBQ and strengthen those broader relationships - your workplace community extends beyond the payroll.

4. Rangatiratanga: Leadership and self-determination Cultivate leadership qualities that empower individuals to take ownership of their roles and contribute to the success of the business.

A mihi whakatau concept can be adapted to complement your current process. The simple act of providing kai or food is known as ‘whakanoa’ and celebrates the inclusion of new hires to the business.

TIP: Be organised in your induction process.

Start how you mean to go on - this is your chance to instil your values from day one and reflect your business culture. Include all administration, internal processes, health, safety, wellbeing, equipment issues, and training.

3. Mentorship/Pastoral Care: Manaakitanga / Whanaungatanga / Kaitiakitanga / Rangatiratanga TIP: Mentors ensure that expectations are maintained and can provide a safe space for new employees to talk about their experiences openly. This is an informal way to manage any issues that affect performance during the early stages of employment and allows you to monitor how new hires fit in and contribute to the business’s culture. Mentorship is a continuous process and may take longer for some, especially those new to employment.

4. Be Authentic/Kia pono: Manaakitanga / Whanaungatanga / Kaitiakitanga / Rangatiratanga TIP: Treat everyone with respect and be true to your values. This is led by the leadership team, managers and supervisors and extends right down to the newest employee. Every business level is responsible for living your values and is empowered to hold others accountable. Mā mua ka kite a muri, mā muri ka ora a mua - those who lead give sight to those who follow, those who follow give life to those who lead.

5. Invest in your staff Haumi Matauranga: Manaakitanga / Whanaungatanga / Kaitiakitanga / Rangatiratanga

• Taha hinengaro (Mental health) Thoughts, feelings, and emotions are integral components of the body and soul.

TIP: Your staff are your greatest asset. Simple, short bites of training and complex technical upskilling increase your capability and supplement the mana of the business. If your focus is retention and succession, training should focus on making the workplace a welcoming environment and promoting future leaders.

As with a Wharenui, a person is only as strong as the four walls that support them. This model assesses how the health of one wall (taha) can be unstable and affect the health of the others.

Other Māori concept models 1. Te Whare Tapa Whā Designed by Sir Mason Durie as a model for understanding Māori health, the strong foundations and four equal sides of a wharenui illustrate the four dimensions of Māori wellbeing. These are: • Taha tinana (Physical health) Good physical health is required for optimal development.

• Taha wairua (Spiritual health) The spiritual essence of a person is their life force.

• Taha whanau (Family health) Understanding the importance of whānau as a source of strength and support.

Te Whare Tapa Whā can be used to evaluate the health of individuals, teams, and departments and allow you to look at possible causes and remedies to actions, problems and challenges. The Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand offers some helpful advice on how to incorporate this model in your workplace - Finding balance: Te Whare Tapa Whā (Workplace) | Mental Health Foundation 2. Tuakana – Teina This model refers to the relationship between an older person (Tuakana) and a younger person (Teina) and is a reciprocal form of mentorship that pairs more experienced workers with those new to the team. Tuakana is the support person and advisor to the Teina, and the Teina shares their knowledge with the Tuakana - usually around technology and the latest trends. More than just

mentoring, Tuakana-Teina is also an opportunity to develop leaders within your team and upskill your workers while fostering strong, supportive working relationships. Ako Aotearoa has created a practical Tuākana Mentor Book to assist employers with implementing mentorship in the trades.

By incorporating Māori values and concepts into your business practices, you’ll build a work environment that embraces whanaungatanga and create a space that focuses on the safety and wellbeing of the ‘whānau’ above the self.

There are great examples of where this has worked and continues to enhance the commitment of staff to believe in the culture of the business: Iwi partnership on Te Ahu a Turanga: Manawatū Tararua Highway – He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tangata! He tangata! He tangata!

Roofing near power lines?

Follow the code The roofing industry is urged to be aware of and follow the code for electrical safe distances after life-changing power line-related worker injuries.

One of New Zealand’s largest electricity utilities, Powerco, is concerned the construction industry – from property developers, designers and surveyors, through to builders, scaffolders and roofers – are putting lives at risk from working too close to power lines, poles and other electricity equipment.

Many of you will remember recently the tragic story of an Auckland scaffolder who needed both arms amputated after the metal pole he was holding while dismantling a scaffolding structure struck power lines. And again, in Auckland, a worker delivering timber

to a construction site was killed after a raised crane touched power lines.

The minimum distance between a structure and an overhead line varies depending on the line’s voltage. Find the minimum distance by visiting powerco.co.nz/building.

“With the amount of development occurring, we’re seeing and hearing of a concerning number of incidences where structures are being put up too close to overhead power lines and people working too close to existing power poles and lines,” says Powerco General Manager Electricity Karen Frew.

Not knowing what’s a safe distance can come at a price. Help avoid electrocution or serious injury – and any costs of correcting the work – by following NZ Electrical Code of Practice NZECP34 - Electrical Safe Distances.

“We’ve heard of incidences where buildings have been built so close to power lines that people can practically touch them when they open second-storey windows. It’s sheer luck the tradespeople building those sites weren’t seriously injured or electrocuted when they were being constructed.”

Before designing, planning or carrying out any work under or near power lines, poles, stay wires or other electricity network equipment, contact 0800 Powerco (0800 769 372) if the work is in Powerco’s electricity network area, and the team can help with the plans. Contact the local electricity lines company for advice if the work is outside Powerco’s area. If in doubt, keep at least 10m – the length of a bus – away from lines.
