Stepping into 2024 Happy summer reading all! This time last year, people of the Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland region and surrounds were in the dark about what a shocking 'summer' was in store. As one of the many, I know I’m not alone in how much more I appreciate and value a clear, sunny day these days (or hour or two even)!

Two of our Auckland-based members – Elevate Roofing and Fyfe Plumbing and Roofing – have kindly shared select project stories for you in this edition of RoofLink® – thank you. And the all-women roofing collective project in Whenuapai is another great contribution (see p26).

In amongst these showcases, we well know that there are thousands of other roofing jobs that our significant member-base have completed to restore vital shelter in the impacted regions. While not featured in the magazine so much, this important work following extreme weather events is very much worthy of celebrating also. And the significant recovery work with those on the East Coast and Coromandel areas certainly is worth celebrating too, and of course must continue into 2024 and beyond.

This season, I hope all RANZ Member-teams get both a chance to rest and recuperate in the holiday period, and get some good roofing weather throughout the summer to make a welcome dent in the forward order books.

As has been said by Graham and others, an economic slow-down could present the upside of a more manageable work- and pressure-load for many. Some more information around resilience and supporting people, relevant to employee retention too, can be found on page 15 of this edition.

Further perspective, insight and learnings can be garnered from the significant roofing

career and contributions of Phil Gilmore (see page 35). With Paton Roofing, his team even roofed the NZ Steel Mill. COLORSTEEL® Awards highlights are included in this issue, with plenty of RANZ-Member wins, our RANZ Life Member Frank Thomas topping the accolades of the star-studded event. RANZ Service to Industry Award-winners are celebrated in this issue also, acknowledging the contributions of Mark Tinning, Paul Grunwell and Alistair Fleming (see page 11).

With a RANZ Conference for the first time off-shore in 2024, an opportunity to refresh perspectives and energy-levels is on offer to you. CEO Summer 2023 Well, where did that year go? As I write this, we still await what our government will look like as we watch the magic of MMP unfold!

We are aware that the incoming government has stated that they will keep the support of apprentice training by continuing the Apprenticeship Boost scheme. This is good news. Used wisely, the Boost does cover the training fees and also gives an incentive, in part, to cover the period when the apprentice may not be contributing initially to the bottom line. We need to keep training, and we thank those who have made the commitment to continue.

The incoming government has also signalled that Te Pukenga is on the chopping block.

RANZ has joined a collective of 20 construction trades and vocations to get the incoming government to reconsider this position. Te Pukenga has a well-documented list of issues which don’t read as much of a success. However, Te Pukenga was part of the solution to the mire in which the polytech sector was bogged down. But as part of the reforms – generically called RoVE (Review of Vocational Education) – we have seen a success story, along with 20 other construction trades and vocations.

Waihanga Ara Rau-our Workplace Development Council (WDC) have been an absolute revelation. The previous ITO model was too commercially focused. Our WDC is a high performer. We have compared notes with the other trades, and our WDC has certainly improved outcomes for trainees.

We are currently deep into a qualification review with our WDC and have yet to encounter any stumbling blocks. Common sense prevails. This is making what is a full-on process very achievable. This group includes people from RANZ, Vertical Horizonz, Industry Centre for Excellence (ICE) and Waihanga Ara Rau. Rooflink® again is full of great content: More on Conference – this year’s and next – and the Colorsteel® Awards. Of particular note, there are stories of people who have added colour and contributions to our industry. At the Colorsteel® Awards, I was honoured to present a Service to Industry Award to RANZ® Life Member, Frank Thomas. Frank has been a roofing training champion, and this award was thoroughly deserved. Very cool to have his family there, too.

Nelson. Mark Tinning, Paul Grunwell and Alistair Fleming were awarded our secondhighest honour – the Service to Industry Award (see page 11). I have been fortunate to work with all of them on RANZ initiatives, and they were all unstinting in doing their best for RANZ and the roofing industry. There is also an interview in this Rooflink® with one of the colourful characters and ‘good buggers’ we have in this industry, Phil Gilmore.

On behalf of the RANZ team, I would like to thank you all for your input to your Association. We also wish you, your teams, and your families all the best for the festive season. And have a very prosperous New Year.

Waterproofing in wet weather Everyone has noticed the changes in the weather cycles of the past years. How installers have managed these extremes has been a challenge. Regardless of the product, the substrate must be dry. The biggest mistake we see from builders is the expectation that a tarp or polythene cover placed directly onto the roof/deck will keep the substrate dry. Often, the removal of the said covering will reveal a saturated substrate.

“Not to worry, the lads have a gas torch in the van. That will speed up the process!” Not a good idea.

Force drying can cause the substrate to delaminate. If this occurs, the plywood manufacturer will not be responsible for the damage. This will be directed to the applicator to replace and repair at their expense.

If the substrate is concrete, obtaining an accurate assessment of the moisture content will be difficult, as the measurement only gets into the top few millimetres of the concrete. If moisture is present, the result will be bubbles and an unadhered membrane.

This is where management and communication play an essential role. The builder/main contractor must be made aware of the importance of installing a cover that is raised off the substrate and has falls to move the water away from the roof/deck area.

This air gap will allow the substrate to continue to dry.

Pre-priming the plywood sheets will help, as well as the use of construction adhesive between the sheets. If this is part of the substrate, check the sheet provided by the supplier.

Once the Builder/Main Contractor understands that you will not lay or force-dry the substrate and that the resulting delays will affect the building program, they will build a temporary roof with falls over the substrate. Often, this is the only option to achieve the correct result the client expects.

In these challenging times, the prepared applicators will continue to make money while the remainder sit at home, frustrated at something they think they have no control over.

The first thing you need is a plan to get that control back.

Thinking outside the box can save your client some money.

A tent does not necessarily mean shrink wrap, for example.

Lastly, staff will become disengaged and down when the weather is wet and dreary. When staff morale drops, so does productivity. If they have work they can get on with, they will feel a sense of achievement. Fishing isn’t an option on these days, either, so we may as well be working!

RANZ 2024 CONFERENCE 24 – 26 June, Royal Pines Resort Gold Coast, Australia For the 30th anniversary, RANZ Members voted to mark the milestone by holding their annual conference offshore, in celebration, at the Royal Pines Resort, Gold Coast, Australia.

Mark joined the roofing industry in 1987, working for Dimond. He eventually joined the team at Graham Hill Roofing in 2007 as an owner and director. He joined the RANZ Executive in 2008, finishing his role with the Association in 2015 with nearly three years as President.

Alistair had a long career with NZ Steel before joining the RANZ executive as an Associate in 2005. He continued working for RANZ and the Roofing Industry in the industry training space until recently.

Paul owned Whakatane Roofing for over forty years and joined RANZ as one of its early members in 1994. In his early days, he was a valued trainer in metal tile and trained roofers in Europe in metal tile installation.

Alistair has brought a strong intellect to his views and positions at RANZ. He has always brought a rounded perspective and broad thinking to whatever he has been involved with and also has the ability to keep looking forward so that issues and positions worked now and in the future were considered.

Paul joined the Executive of RANZ in 2007 and retired in 2016. He was primarily focused on industry training and is another who should reflect on training numbers today and their contribution to our evolving qualification journey. Paul has made many friends in the industry and was always willing to share his knowledge and experiences with his peers.

Like many in Canterbury, Mark showed his true colours by offering resources during the tough times that the earthquakes brought. He also led initiatives to improve working at heights in the region. He has always wanted what was good for the industry, unselfishly, and is very well respected in our industry.

Mark has never been afraid to get his hands dirty and, appropriately, was delivering RANZ gear at the 2022 Te Pae Conference, driving a truck. Graham Hill Roofing also won the Commercial Roof of the Year 2022 with Te Pae. RANZ and the Roofing Industry wish Mark and Lisa all the best and thank him for his commitment.

He also picks up on the details and was invaluable as RANZ negotiated its way through the mire created with the Review of Vocational Education (RoVE). This was tedious work, which Alistair did not shy away from. Alistair is sought out by others, including NZMRM, for his vast knowledge and application to the task. RANZ and the Roofing Industry wish Alistair and Linda all the best and thank him for his commitment.

He never turned down requests for help with RANZ projects and happily shared his views and vision for the industry. Paul is another of the really good people who make up our industry, working hard to build a solid career and is an example in our industry. Video Series In response to the current economic ‘headwinds’ – and to his popularity at the RANZ 2023 Conference – RANZ has commissioned a series of financial guidance videos with straighttalking, easy-to-listen-to CA (Chartered Accountant), Luke Kemeys.

Addressing burnout to prepare for the next disruption

• Reports of stress, tiredness and burnout are on the rise both at home and abroad after more than 3 years of the COVID-19 pandemic and other disruptions. One in three New Zealand workers reported experiencing burnout in a 2022 AUT workplace wellbeing survey – three times more than at the beginning of the pandemic. The construction industry is by no means immune to this.

Mental health is worse A 2022 MATES in Construction survey reported ‘similar or higher levels of anxiety and suicidal ideation compared to [2021] and lower levels of resilience when it comes to managing stress’. The findings include almost half of respondents (47%) experiencing worse than usual mental health in 2022 and 41% of respondents reporting the prior 12 months as being among the most difficult of times in their life.

Tragically, the survey reports the construction industry experiencing a higher annual rate of worker suicide than any other Aotearoa New Zealand industry. Unfortunately, the recent unprecedented times will not be leaving us any time soon. In contrast, disruption is quickly setting in as part of business as usual.

Despite this, many organisations still fail to fully appreciate their role. A recent McKinsey Health Institute global study of nearly 15,000 employees and 1,000 HR decision-makers found that ‘employers are overlooking the role of the workplace in burnout and underinvesting in systemic solutions’.

Dr Lucy Hone, Co-Director New Zealand Institute of Wellbeing and Resilience, highlights the role that organisations play in reducing burnout. ‘Far from being individual failing, burnout should be viewed as the individual’s response to systemic challenges – and/or sustained stress with no let-up.

‘For this reason, it is highly irresponsible and unfair for organisations to offer staff resilience training if they are not prepared to back this up with a realistic and transparent appraisal of how workplace burdens impact their teams.

What is burnout?

‘If burnout results from chronic work-place stress that has not been successfully managed, prevention is as much the responsibility of executive leaders, and people leaders, as it is personal.’

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the three key characterisations of burnout are:

More than just individual support Many organisations have recognised the wellbeing challenges of their employees and invested in initiatives like mental health awareness campaigns or providing wellness benefits. While these are laudable, organisations often overlook the root causes of burnout.

Address underlying causes There is a big difference between surviving and thriving. Properly addressing burnout is critical to a high-performing organisation and ensuring resilience against future shocks, no matter their size. Organisations where employees are scraping through by the skin of their teeth are likely to see higher staff turnover. The McKinsey Health Institute study found respondents experiencing burnout were six times more likely to report intending to quit their job within the next 6 months.

The future success of an organisation heavily relies on the wellbeing of its employees and, in turn, their ability to perform both inside and outside of disruptions. Many of the measures that can address burnout also help to build the resilience of an organisation: quality leadership, authentic staff engagement, clear unity of purpose and strong reciprocal relationships. All these attributes contribute to the increased ability of an organisation to manage crises and disruption.

Support employee wellbeing by reducing burnout Now is the time to double down on acknowledging and prioritising mental health, creating a workplace environment that tackles the systemic causes of burnout head on and ensuring lessons from the past few years are not forgotten. It’s a win-win situation: reducing burnout both supports your employees’ wellbeing and builds your organisation’s long-term ability to not just survive but thrive no matter what comes next.

Local high school recruitment RANZ actively supports members to attract young people into a career in roofing.

As many RANZ members do on a regular basis, RANZ Executive Committee member Eddie Tell, along with some of his team from Superior Waterproofing in Auckland, recently exhibited at a highschool trades expo. Promoting roofing as a career option for young people is a passion for Eddie and a key motivation for his post on the RANZ Executive.

With so many New Zealand sectors facing people shortages, previous focus and momentum from the training provider sector to promote construction careers has pulled back, focusing instead on productivity and training quality (see CEO’s Report on p5). Given the current situation, community-level initiatives, such as having a presence at these local high school events, are an effective recruitment option/response for attracting young apprentices. Of course, school leavers make up only part of the new-recruit picture; for instance, career changers who enter roofing represent double the number of school leavers. Stay tuned for more on this in future initiatives/updates from RANZ. Tomorata Valley House Architectural designers, Designate, and building contractor Wardy Construction have been regular clients of Elevate Roofing over the years, so when the two came together on this rural residential build in the Tomorata Valley, north of Auckland, it was a natural choice to bring Josh Waldie and his experienced team on board for the roof.

“Both the builder and homeowner contacted us directly as their preferred roof installer, and we all worked together to accomplish the perfect build,” says Josh. “Our part of the build was to fit the new roof, which came with its own set of challenges due to the size of the roof and the shape. Although we didn’t have any input in the design of the roof, there were some changes we made to the original plans.”

We utilised having a decent crew of six to ten guys on-site during this time and bulk-laid the majority of the house. Then, for the remainder of the details and some of the tricky parts, I was travelling back and forth from Wairau every day with two apprentices.”

In addition, the client specifically requested for all the ribs of the roofing iron to align precisely with the centres of the apexes. With the multiple roof angles, this added to the complexity of the job, says Tyler Paull, who ran the installation on site. “The client was set on having a Euro-tray look; the most cost effective solution was Roofing Industries’ Multidek® profile,” he says.

“In the end, we successfully accomplished the task and took immense pride in the remarkable achievement of our team. The outcome is exactly what we expected and exceeded the client’s expectations.

They are extremely happy with the finished product and how much care we took with the job – and for keeping them heavily involved throughout the process.”

“There were some tricky details, where a 40-degree roof ran down to a 15-degree roof. On the plans, this was drawn as a valley detail; however, that was never going to work. So, we changed the detail to a valley/ head barge on the angle of the roof. Little changes make huge visual impacts – and the change we made looks good.”

During the installation, Tyler says the weather was unpredictable, and the presence of morning and afternoon dew created a slippery surface that was difficult to eliminate, let alone mitigate. “There is no grip surface to walk on with a clip-on product. Combined with the roofs’ steep pitch, this presented us with H&S challenges to keep our team safe.”

Another challenge was the site’s remote location – an hour-and-fortyfive drive each day for the team. For the first two weeks of the job, Tyler

NZ WOMEN IN ROOFING

All women together At Whenuapai, West Auckland, a unique new project has just been completed. It’s called BUILDhers. Developed by Fletcher Living, BUILDhers is a four-bedroom standalone home that has been planned, designed, built, marketed, and sold entirely by women. NZWiR were invited to put a team together to install the roof.

When the emails about the BUILDhers project started dropping into my inbox from RANZ and Genia Znarok from NZ Steel, asking if I was interested in putting a team together to help, I said, ‘I’m all in!’. As someone who has been in the building, construction and infrastructure industry for the past 22 years, I can tell you I have never seen or heard of anything like this. My immediate thoughts were: why, who, how, what, where and when?

The Why I knew straight away that this would be a project of a higher purpose. So, based on our New Zealand Women in Roofing’s pillars of ‘Mentoring’ and ‘Education’, the challenge was accepted, and the team was chosen.

The Who (The Team) • Tina Potter, a qualified roof and wall cladder from The Roofing Specialists in Hamilton, whom I first worked with back in 2019 when we successfully completed a re-roof together. Tina was my left-hand (wo)man on this project. She not only took on the challenge to co-lead the project, but she also agreed to be my deputy leader of the Hamilton Chapter of NZWIR. • Tarquala Whittiker-Stone of Douglas Roofing in Whangarei. Starting her apprenticeship, Tarquala is my niece, who has been inspired to join the roofing industry, installing a variety of iron, metal tiles, Espan.

installer and first-time iron installer on this project. We met at a ‘Wahine in trades’ event held by NAWIC and Vertical Horizonz, where she showed a can-do attitude on a metal tile roof module, which impressed me a lot.

• Myself, Liz Watson of Stone Roofing Limited in Hamilton, a qualified metal tiler, qualified roof and wall cladder, leader of the Hamilton NZWIR Chapter, re-elected National Association for Women in Construction (NAWIC) National Councillor, NZWIR National Board Member, Vertical Horizonz block course trainer and ConCOVE Women’s Advisory member, 2017 Roof Trainee of The Year, 2019 Colorsteel Roofer of the Year Finalist, 2019/2020 BCITO/NAWIC Tradeswoman of the Year.

We had our pre-start briefing and made our plan as to how we would attack the project, step by step, allowing a lot of time for educational and mentoring moments – like right down to the reasons why we would or wouldn’t do something, how we planned to problem-solve and achieve it, all the way to the cutting in of all the flashings.

The roof itself was a double-storey residential dwelling in Whenuapai, Auckland.

Lower Storey Day 1: We checked the substrate (15 degrees), installed the underlay to the lower roof entirely, laid all the areas with the trapezoidal profiled sheets and flashed the first area – barge, side apron, front aprons and ridging.

• Last but not least, a huge thank you to Katy O’Neil and Ben Cleal from Aspect Roofing in Auckland, who did a fantastic job organising our materials, as well as filling our bellies, providing us with food and beverages every day – thank you!

Day 2: We flashed the rest of the roof areas – more front and side aprons and ridging, taking time to get the finishing touches right and tidy up the site. We then headed out to have a late lunch/brunch together before parting ways and waiting for the upper storey to be ready for us two weeks later.

The How, What, Where and When

Upper Storey

It was always going to be a big ask to get the team together from different areas of the country, but we were determined to be part of this epic project. On our arrival, we were welcomed to the site by the one and only Jasmine Lawrence (BuildHERS Project Manager), with her energetic vibe – which I absolutely thrive off – and some lovely rain and wind, which became the theme of the weather for the duration of our time on the project. But that didn’t stop us.

Day 1: Again, checked the substrate (30 degrees) and installed the underlay to the entire roof area. In and out of the rain, we laid three-quarters of it, including two sides of the valley, then called it a day. We also spent a good couple of hours doing video shoots and having fun.

Day 2: We laid the rest of the roof area, installed the ridging and tidied up before high-fiving and congratulating each other!

As a team, we are so happy with the work we completed on this epic project. We congratulate Fletcher Living for their motivation in creating this opportunity to showcase what we women are truly capable of.

A side story to this project was Sylvia Campbell, a female building apprentice on site, who mentioned she had an assessment in her building apprenticeship ‘to install a roof’. I knew it could be years before she might have that opportunity, so I took the initiative to invite her to join our team to achieve this part of her training. Her employer agreed.

At the end of the project, I marked Sylvia off after getting her involved in every aspect of roofing the upper storey. Like the rest of our team, she pulled sheets up, screwed them off, cut flashings, and took time to listen, understand and perform the task set.

To have had this opportunity to take part in what I call a legacy project, I couldn’t be prouder of our team. Sharing the excitement, the effort, the knowledge, the experiences, the skills taught and learned, and the empowerment it gave us all was such a blessing, not just for ourselves but anyone who sees what has been achieved in this project.

Solar considerations As we take better strides towards sustainability, solar energy collectors are becoming the most common method for achieving a smaller footprint for homeowners. And roofs, to most, are the most logical place to install these systems.

Solar collection systems fall into two main categories: Panels that collect the energy and convert it to electricity, which is stored in battery systems or into the national grid, or ones that capture the heat from the sun via a series of water tubes to supplement or replace the traditional hot-water system in the home. Commonly, these systems are adhered to or are part of the roofing product itself.

There are plenty of solar solutions out there. For more information on who and what is available, check out the Sustainable Energy Association New Zealand (SEANZ) at www.seanz.org.nz.

Plan for the future Currently, most of these systems are fitted long after the roofer has left the site. However, it would be good practice to bring up solar collection systems with your customer at the same time as you are having the usual discussion about roofing options.

At the very least, discuss making provisions for installing solar sometime in the future. Some systems must be connected structurally to the building – not simply to the battens or purlins. And for a membrane roof, providing some plinths that a solar system can be connected to at a later date is a smart approach.

It’s you who’ll get the call?

Why should we worry about it when we are gone? Think about it. If a poorly installed solar installation results in a leaky roof, who’s the first

person the homeowner will call? Yep, the roofer. We can minimise this risk by being proactive, as mentioned above. We can also mitigate some problems downstream if solar systems are not installed with due consideration for the roofing products. These systems can impact on the durability and weather tightness of the roof.

Keep a record of your work For some roofing products, there should be good clearance between the underside of the solar system and the topside of the roofing product. This enables ongoing maintenance and should prevent debris from collecting above and under the solar system.

NOTE: This is not so critical when the solar collector is adhered to or part of the roofing product.

The two images on this page show both types of solar collectors installed on the same new-build house during construction. Both systems are fitted onto a well-known NZ brand of pre-coated metal roofing. Ask yourself, what is the manufacturer’s warranty looking like now?

MEMBER PROJECT

Gaia Forest Preschool, Manurewa An organic, leaf-shaped roof for a school in the middle of a forest created some unique challenges for Mat Dunne and his team at Fyfe Roofing. The outcome, however, was very satisfying – especially for the children.

The intent of this building was to create a form in the shape of a leaf, with a roof to match. Principally, this was to align with the client’s goal to create the world’s first childcare centre fully inspired by the ‘Gaia’ (Earth) Education Principle: Earth-inspired building designs, environments, values, curriculum and outcomes for children.

“Keola Ltd were the main contractor and approached us as a preferred Dimond installer to install the roof,” says Mat Dunne of Fyfe Roofing.

“We were also involved in later stages of the roof design, both to provide some cost-saving options as well as a design change to allow delivery of the roof sheets onto the structure via a narrow driveway in a mature forest.”

Delivery of the roof structure required some unique thinking for Mat and his team, who had to create a step along the centreline of the

roof, mimicking a ‘stem’ to the leaf shape. “This step created a tricky detail on the two endpoints of the leaf, transitioning into a detailed step flashing. By working with Folding Flashing Capping (FFC), we were able to fabricate a one-piece welded component to bring all these angles together to one point.”

“Also, following the arc of the leaf using box sections of gutters and barge flashings created some additional challenges. We used a template to cut the roof sheet to the appropriate curve. And we were able to transfer angles and lengths from the main building shape to create individually faceted barge flashings and spouting.”

“By reducing sheet length – and assisted by the skills of an experienced truck driver, some old fashioned manual labour, and small-crane operator – we were able to transfer the shorter roof sheets up onto the structure.”

Environmental considerations also came into play with this project, with solar panels and rainwater harvesting included in the build.

Fyfe’s on-site team comprised Shaun Cassin, foreman, responsible for project management as well as on-site management; technical roofer Mike; roofers Dane and Troy; and apprentices Dante and Morgyn.

From the Architect Nestled amongst native New Zealand bush, this leaf-shaped Early Learning Centre aims to foster the connection between children and the earth. The centre operates around a Gaia (Earth) focused philosophy, and the environment and the building play vital roles in ensuring this philosophy.

The design of the centre reflects this thinking by adopting a biophilic form that integrates sustainability and has a light touch on the surrounding environment to ensure children are in a healthy environment that is connected to nature.

The building harnesses the natural environment to heat and cool itself by using natural ventilation from the oxygen-rich forest air to ventilate the rooms. It also captures the rainwater off the roof for use in the building.

Weathertight Marley spouting and downpipes are extruded in one continuous length, then cut to consistent lengths on the production line.

This means that downpipes have no vertical seam as a weak spot. Marley system components also have no seams as they are moulded in single pieces. This is particularly important for water tightness on corners which are susceptible to wear and tear. All Marley systems are solvent jointed together ensure a secure, watertight weld between components.

Marley spouting systems feature a high front face to help reduce windborne salt, dirt and grit getting under the roof edge. Higher front faces are also useful for hiding untidy rooflines.

Spouting brackets maintain a 10mm gap between the back face of the gutter and the fascia board. MEMBER INTERVIEW

Roofing is in his DNA Retirement for most RANZ business owners usually involves stepping away from work altogether. However, that was never an option for Phil Gilmore – one of the association’s most popular characters.

Sixty-seven years spent in the roofing industry – yes, 67 – sees Phil still clocking in five days a week for several hours, so retirement has not come easily. His continuing contribution – son Grant Gilmore now owns and runs Paton Roofing Services – genuinely lies in 83-year-old Phil’s passion for roofing. It’s in his DNA.

Paton Roofing Services Ltd was a founding member of RANZ, which, under the guidance of Sue Harkin, brought together a key group of business owners keen to establish the roofing trade as a viable, progressive organisation. Phil served on the Executive in its first year, stepping away due to business pressures.

As a 16-year-old, straight out of school (Seddon Technical College), Phil joined Cowperthwaites as an apprentice roof tiler, achieving a qualification after three years learning on the job. What attracted him from the outset was working outside in the fresh air. Still just shy of 20, Phil was seconded to work with aluminium – Cowperthwaites had the New Zealand agency for Allstrip – with a machine to roll the product on site. He led a team of four roofers travelling with the coil and machine to many parts of the North Island.

Reflecting on RANZ in 2004 and now, Phil says safety issues for employees working at height are far better and clearly stated in regulations. The whole industry has benefitted from training initiatives driven by RANZ, and the roofing industry is now a well-organised and respected trade, contributing in a meaningful way for the benefit of its members.

In 1969, as luck would have it, Winstones was looking for a supervisor, and, given his years of experience and good all-round skills, Phil won the job ahead of 80 other applicants. In this role, Phil was in charge of 180 installers of the product, eventually working his way up to manager.

It was 1978, and change was coming – Winstones acquired Dimond in Wellington, and Dimond was established on Normanby Road, Mt Eden, a change involving Phil’s role. Fletchers then bought Winstones.

Meantime, in 1978, Phil was approached by Paton Roofing, which had been operating for some years, and he landed the contract manager position. Ten years later, in 1988, he bought Paton Roofing and the building in Henderson.

“It was pretty hard in the industry at that time – things were tough, and I experienced many ups and downs with all manner of problems – which, thankfully, I had the experience to deal with. Others were not so lucky,” he says. “I had 15 staff, and the first major contract was roofing the steel mill at Glenbrook for NZ Steel – a $6m complex operation.

Thankfully, it’s still serving the company well”.

As a commercial and industrial roofing company, Paton Roofing was involved in roofing projects for schools, supermarkets, airport hangars, and many industrial premises. Alongside work in New Zealand, the company worked in the islands, roofing a tuna cannery in Samoa and developing for the Little Sisters of the Poor charity, also in Samoa. No doubt, this is where Phil developed his love of the islands as a place to escape to for R&R.

Safety is a huge factor. 30 to 40% of the cost of the job must be a provision of scaffolding and other means to ensure workers’ safety, which must be factored in when quoting jobs. Grant Gilmore often now refers to Phil as his ‘junior estimator’ as this is an area of the business where his background and experience are so valuable.

Sixty-seven years in the industry means he knows more than a thing or two in that role!

What must the industry do to keep improving, growing and moving forward?

Skill shortages continue to be worrying, and many members struggle to hire suitable employees. More training is needed for many in the industry to ensure we have the skill base we need in the future as younger people replace the current baby-boomer generation. Paton Roofing has brought in five roofers from the Philippines – all highly skilled, know what they are doing, willing to learn new methods and techniques, and very hard-working. The current Paton staff complement is 29 direct employees, plus seven, including Phil in the office and 12 subcontractor roofers.

Herman Heunis: building tomorrow’s roofers When Herman Heunis stepped out of his office job and into a roofing career, he was terrified of heights. But now, not only is he a highly skilled roofer with over a decade of industry experience, he is also helping to shape the next generation of Kiwi roofers.

A roofing tutor at trades training provider ICE (Industry Connection for Excellence), Herman Heunis ensures roofing apprentices from around the country gain the theoretical knowledge, practical skills and support they need to nail their apprenticeships. RoofLink chats to him about what it takes to succeed in the sector and what makes roofing such a rewarding career.

Herman, tell us a bit about yourself.

I was born and raised in South Africa, graduating from college as a motor mechanic but going on to work as a coal analyst. I moved to New Zealand in 2005 and landed a job in Human Resources. However, during the 2009 recession, the company I was working for went into liquidation. I was lucky enough to get a labouring role, which opened the door to my roofing career – and the rest is history.

What do you love about roofing?

There is so much more to roofing than many people realise. Every job is different; there are lots of opportunities to build your technical skills and many pathways you can specialise in. After cutting my teeth on 100-year-old villas in Devonport (and conquering my fear of heights!), I did a mixture of commercial and residential work before specialising in architectural roofing.

I love the problem-solving component of the trade. Every roofing project is unique and presents its own set of challenges; figuring out the best approach to repair or install a roof is intellectually stimulating and rewarding. Job satisfaction is a big one. Completing a roofing project and seeing the results of your efforts is highly satisfying; knowing that you’ve contributed to protecting people’s homes and buildings from the elements gives a real sense of accomplishment.

Why did you transition into training?

I always enjoyed training new guys on-site and found it rewarding to see them start to build their technical skills and deepen their understanding of the roofing process. When a role came up as a

roofing tutor at ICE, I saw it as an excellent opportunity to continue sharing my knowledge with industry newcomers while supporting businesses to achieve their projects by developing a strong pipeline of skilled roofers.

I’m also involved in Waihanga Ara Rau’s NZ Certificate in Roofing qualification review, providing technical advice to the Workforce Development Council. It’s nice to have a say in the training of our future roofers. Roofing as an industry is significantly undervalued, and it feels good to know I’m making a difference to the young people coming out of school looking to build skills for their future.

How has the industry changed since you first started out?

There have been huge innovations in materials, an increased focus on health and safety, and rapid technological advancements, such as digital tools for project design and planning and using drones on-site to see finished products. However, the most significant change has been the skilled labour shortage. The roofing industry has been hit hard by this, and that’s why the work we do at ICE is so essential. We are developing the skills and labour the industry needs to keep growing.

What sets ICE apart as a roofing training provider?

We are small and flexible and can deliver on-demand where and when needed. This agility is a huge plus because it means we can tailor our training to meet the unique needs of each business and every apprentice. What advice would you give to someone considering embarking on a roofing apprenticeship?

Keep up to date with your bookwork, always ask questions, and stay open to learning, as there are always new or different ways to do things.

Become a roofer, and every day is different. There’s continuous learning, a tonne of job satisfaction, and plenty of jobs, so there is good job security. You can earn pretty good money, too! It’s not always easy, but the journey is worth it.

Poaching is also a challenge, as Paton Roofing experienced in the 2019 – 2020 period. Phil says offering $80 per hour is totally unrealistic, yet this was how one operator wooed some staff at that time.

I know a lot of newcomers to RANZ grapple with what’s required to run a successful roofing business – if you have a good team behind you, it’s rather like a marriage”.

Phil feels a good amount of tendering in the industrial/commercial space is a good thing. “We seem to be alright; people still come to us to quote, so we don’t advertise, as jobs are frequently won on reputation, which is an excellent position to be in.

Shorter work hours allow Phil to escape from his Te Atatu apartment home to his home on the waterfront at Tairua; he loves spending time in the islands – Fiji, Samoa and Rarotonga.

“We’ve turned down millions of dollars of business this year, as with current staffing and jobs in progress, there is only so much we can deliver. We have 44 staff including four trainees and two supervisors.

We are stretched. Significant projects currently are the Summerset St John’s Retirement Village (warm roof with complex hips, valleys and high pitches) begun a year ago; the Manukau Super Clinic in Great South Road ($7m contract) and the new car park building at Auckland International Airport.”

If you had your time again, would you choose roofing as a career?

Absolutely. I still love it, and being able to keep my hand in for a few hours each day is perfection. Grant runs the business now, having learnt on the job with me all those years ago, and we have a great team of good people.

For me, the most stressful role was being contracts supervisor – the workload is incredible, and staff shortages and dealing with builders who don’t know what they’re doing is hard. The role hasn’t changed much since my day.

Along with Grant, Phil has three daughters and is the proud grandfather of five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A little-known fact about Phil In 1956, on leaving school and when he’d taken up an apprenticeship with Cowperthwaites, Phil played for Seddon Technical College Old Boys against Otahuhu College (flanker #6 – old days number 11) in a curtain raiser to a Springboks v All Blacks test at Eden Park. He then joined Roskill Senior B team until being signed up by Wilson Whineray to play for Auckland Grammar.

Five years later, when they discovered Phil was a Seddon Tech old boy, he was kicked out of the team. His mate was Bill Birdwhistle, who was adamant if Phil had to go, so did he. Bill later moved to Christchurch and became an All Black.
