Like many aspects of life in our place and times, the approach to, and conversation on, mental health has and is shifting very rapidly.

It was only a few generations ago post WWII, when everyone was actively encouraged to bottle things up. But the statistics don’t lie.

We simply must keep tracking onwards to find ways to engage for better mental health.

That’s why you’ll find (on p19) the Chief Executive of Site Safe talking, not about working safely at heights, but about mental health.

Safety at height is still immensely important, however, and as a roofing community, extraordinary progress has been made in the area of safe practices in recent years – well done all. We’re thrilled to have a prize pack up for grabs from one of our wonderful business partners to celebrate this progress and boost team safety tools for a lucky winner (see page 16). Let’s keep up the great work here, too.

And speaking of celebrating, we are really sending 2019 out with a bang in this edition of Roof Link with three separate roofing awards to read up on and draw inspiration from. Firstly, the Skills Training Company of the Year for 2019 was awarded to Metalcraft, and you can read all about why on p14. Then, there were the inaugural COLORSTEEL® Awards, held in November, which are highlighted on p22-23 – a valuable new initiative from our Platinum RANZ business partner, broadening the celebrations in roofing excellence. And we also look at the

poignant win for the roofing industry, with Liz Watson taking out the NAWiC Tradeswoman of the Year award on p25.

We live in one of the most beautiful environments in the world, so are green roofs really a priority consideration for New Zealand?

CEO Summer 2019 The government’s changes to vocational education (training) have certainly shaken up what may happen as we pursue our goal of a training school. RANZ has submitted to the Select Committee with our view of the training world. If the proposed changes do not enable industry to state exactly what should be taught, with educators focused on learner outcomes, then it is not the delivery method that industry, or New Zealand needs.

There have been plenty of attempts to put our concerns to Minister Hipkins. However, it appears much has been decided with tweaks from here on in. RANZ has moved on from trying to get the government to see sense, and we are now exploring opportunities that the changes bring. It is a long game.

Recently, we heard from the liquidator of Corbel Construction – another one biting the dust! There has been a legal challenge to the directors of Corbel and the way retentions have been handled. Not all of the retentions have been treated as required by the Act. This has left the directors vulnerable. A prosecution would be great as this could set legal precedent to send a message to wayward directors.

This is a sticking plaster approach, though.

As one of the Executive said to me recently, “we need to put our big pants on and stop entering into these contracts.” He is absolutely right. We are just letting the

main contractors ride rough shod over us.

Broken record stuff, I know, but nothing changes if nothing changes.

I have had a few complaints come across my desk about the relationship of subcontractors to member companies. I won’t go into detail on the complaints, but I want to remind members about your clients’ perception and their reality.

If you use a subcontractor, then it is you the client is dealing with. Deflecting problems to the subcontractor does not absolve you, the member, of your responsibilities. It is your job, no one else’s. If you have issues with the subcontractor, you of course refer them to the relevant clauses you have in your written subcontract agreement, don’t you. Be careful recommending a subcontractor to a client, as the client will perceive it as still being a RANZ member doing the work – a long bow to draw, I know. I have seen it happen where a supplier has supplied the roof and then recommends a labour-only fixer. The labour-only fixer has made a meal of it and then the client has complained to RANZ about who the supplier (a member) recommended.

The ‘Mates in Construction’ initiative has also recently been launched to help as well. Our proactivity when implementing controls for working at heights made a real difference. We have to be more proactive about helping those around us. It is very complex and one size does not fit all.

Finally, the fire at the International Events Centre has given up plenty of speculation as to who, what and how. We have an article further on in Roof Link with some points we all need to consider. Obviously, the outcome of the investigation is some way off, and the results of that investigation will be carefully assessed, as no doubt there will be potential for litigation.

Construction Sector Accord – update The Construction Sector Accord is a shared commitment between government and industry to transform the construction sector.

Government recognises that the construction industry is important to New Zealand as an employer of 10 percent of the population and producer of eight percent of GDP, and it is forecast to grow faster than most industries through to 2026. Numbers are important but, more importantly, the construction sector builds the homes, workplaces and infrastructure we need for a healthy, happy and productive society.

Over recent years the construction sector has had mixed fortunes. On the upside has been an unprecedented period of growth that is set to continue for some years. Construction businesses in most regions have full order books and are struggling to meet demand.

On the downside we have seen ongoing issues with leaking buildings, severe labour shortages and a swathe of building companies falling over and leaving subcontractors and suppliers out of pocket for millions of dollars.

The coalition Government came to power with a bold goal of building 100,000 extra houses over a 10-year period. There was considerable scepticism from commentators, given that the industry was already working at full capacity; however, the failure of Kiwibuild and the rash of business failures illustrate the stark systemic problems across the sector.

The bright side is that for the first time, in my memory at least, government, main contractors, subcontractors and suppliers all agree we need to make changes to the way we do business. Government need a thriving

sector to build housing and infrastructure, which are both in short supply, not to mention the role construction plays in employing and training New Zealanders, many of whom are from less advantaged sectors of society.

As subcontractors we are the authors of our own destiny. If you want to get paid for your work, only work for clients with good credit ratings and track records: it’s up to you to check this. If you agree to retentions, make sure your contract states they will be held in a trust account, and insist on being provided with regular proof. Know your costs and minimum margins, then stick to them. Without profit you cannot re-invest in your staff, your infrastructure and the balance sheet, which will see you through the quiet times.

Main contractors need a better pipeline of work without the booms and busts that hit construction harder than any other sector; they also need a fairer allocation of risk from clients and better margins to enable re-investment in their businesses and improved resilience.

Subcontractors have the same requirements for workflow and margin and, as the parties that end up with the biggest share of the risk, they need greater surety that they will be paid for the work they are doing.

Key issues that must be addressed are flattening the boom-bust cycle, fair risk allocation, and changing from bottom price to best value procurement. These issues can be further distilled down to the need for trust between all parties.

Guiding principles of the accord are to build trusting relationships, be bold, value our people, and to act with shared responsibility.

RANZ has direct representation on the Construction Sector Accord Development Group via RANZ Executive Committee Member Michael (Bucko) Sentch of Project Unite. Graham Burke is also in the group. RANZ is a member of the NZSTCF.

The Construction Accord is an agreement between government and industry to address the issues, which go beyond my short summary.

Leaders from industry and government have been working to develop a plan for industry transformation, due to be signed off by the Cabinet before the end of 2019 and to be delivered over the next few years. There is no doubt the plan will have a positive influence on the sector; however, real transformation needs to come from within the industry.

Breath of fresh air One of the problems experienced with insulated roofing systems – introduced to the roofing industry some years ago – has been an accumulation of condensation, which can impact on the long-term durability of materials.

It’s an issue that’s been addressed in the development of Tricore®, Dimond® Roofing's insulated roof system, which is designed for New Zealand conditions including frequently occurring extremes in the weather.

Two new schools in the South Island, Te Kura O Take Karara at Wanaka and Rangiora West’s Te Matauru Primary, are benefiting from this development. Both schools are nearing completion, with roofing contracted to RANZ founder member Newfield Roofing in Christchurch.

Bruce Campbell of Bruce Campbell Roofing Ltd (also a RANZ member) was subcontracted to provide additional labour to the project. He says the Tricore® system makes a lot of sense to him, given that it addresses requirements on both sides of the

insulation. It’s a simple system, and has been easily installed by Bruce and his team of three.

In any insulated roof system, when warm air migrates through to the insulation layer it eventually reaches a cooler surface that will cause moisture in the air to condense. As this condensation accumulates it reduces the insulation’s effectiveness – and, in the long term, the durability of the roof.

Both schools comprise four classroom blocks and an administration block, and the Tricore® insulated roof, the solution promoted by Newfield Roofing early in the design phase, satisfies many of the Ministry of Education requirements.

The base is built up in layers, with a significant advantage that the roof sheet goes up first so

internal contractors can progress work in a weathertight environment, and time savings on the job can also be achieved.

How does the Tricore® system work?

A roof underlay is positioned on top of the insulation with sealed laps that allow transfer of water vapour but prevent condensation moisture from passing through to the insulation below. Unique from an installer’s point of view is a galvanised roof rail which is positioned above the insulation board and roof underlay to create that important air space immediately below the metal roof sheet.

And in the case of installing DD630 it allows for the top sheet to simply clip faster, saving additional time. continued on page 11

Researched and developed by Dimond, Tricore® has 2.4m roof rails that mean when condensation collects on the underside of the roof sheet – or sometimes even on the top surface of the underlay in extreme conditions – the roof sheet is directly exposed to air movement in the air space created by the roof rails. It will dry out instead of condensation accumulating. In other words, the roof can breathe.

Says Bruce Campbell: “For the system to work perfectly it’s important that architects and engineers fully understand that even the little details must be accurate. The Tricore® system all makes perfect sense to me as a roofer – I think it’s a great product; on both schools the roof has gone together really well – mind you, I was confident that it would.”

Bruce emphasises the importance of logistics needing to be 100 percent accurate with this system so the various components arrive at the right time. It’s crucial that the layers can be loaded off the truck and onto the roof straight away. Any kink in that process can cause problems.

What’s in the schools’ Tricore® system?

• A base layer of liner (Dimond BB900 profile in reverse run) forms the roofing platform for other layers. Once installed the area is weatherproof – work can proceed underneath.

• The insulation layer is a PIR (Polyisocyanurate) board, providing highly efficient thermal insulation and acoustic performance material that retains long-term R-values and reduces noise levels within the building.

• Underlay is Solitex Mento 1000 – a non-wicking building paper that allows vapour to permeate to the cold side of the roof.

• A ventilated roof rail system provides air flow. The rail is fixed through to the purlin, and the exterior roof profile (DP955) is fixed to the roof rail so there’s no single fixing from outside through to the purlin.

From concrete jungle to eco-sponge: asserting the value of sustainable drainage Why, despite rapid global movements towards sustainable drainage, are many new developments still bogged down in traditional paradigms?

Human nature is inherently impatient, expecting results of new initiatives to be visible and immediate… a ‘scratch and win’ mentality. But, there are some things in life, such as modern storm-water control methods, that are vital, despite their early effects not being so apparent.

Articles written about managing storm water would hardly have most readers riveted, but this article by Civil Design Engineer, Andrew Harrison from Golder, which ventures in to the broader subject of urban planning, is different.

Coming from a company that supplies roof garden systems, I’m impressed by Andrew’s passion for the transformation of impermeable surfaces (not just roofs), into ‘eco-sponges’; performing some very important tasks for our metropolitan environments.

Management of water is a major challenge for modern societies – and one that the average person tends to take for granted until they’re knee-deep, or the tap runs dry or dirty. That’s when the mud will fly in the direction of designers, developers, authorities and regulators who haven’t moved towards ensuring sustainable infrastructure and water management. When it comes to reputation, mud tends to stick.

With climate projections predicting more intense and frequent weather events such as floods and droughts and heat waves, and with regulators and authorities delivering increasing environmental penalties, every development must factor sustainability and resilience into its water and drainage design or face increasing costs.

Over recent decades, knowledge of sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) or water-sensitive urban design (WSUD) methods and techniques has matured, and many examples around the world have demonstrated great success and benefits for

the environment and communities. These environmental and social benefits are very real, and are certainly valued by communities and regulators, but they can be hard to quantify in monetary terms except by considering the costs of remediating the alternative scenarios, such as dealing with pollution, or cleaning up flood damage.

For designers and developers, the slow rate of adoption of sustainable solutions is likely due to a combination of factors, including preferences for the familiar, a perception of higher costs of construction compared to traditional approaches, and a lack of comprehensive understanding of interactions in a wider catchment.

The good news is that sustainable drainage features can be easily integrated into urban development without undue excess cost.

Even at a very small scale, sustainable drainage can provide significant benefits in terms of water quantity, water quality, amenity and biodiversity.

Defining sustainable urban drainage solutions In essence, sustainable drainage is about coping with the quantity of water (such as how to handle large volumes of rainfall and storm water to avoid flooding) as well as preserving or improving the quality of water (such as by filtering pollutants and contaminants out of storm water before it returns to waterways).

Urban development replaces natural ‘soft’ surfaces with artificial and non-absorbent ‘hard’ surfaces. This means that rainfall and runoff can no longer soak into the ground and instead need to be captured and transferred away. Traditional drainage systems do little to prevent the runoff mixing with sediment and other pollutants, so adequate water treatment is needed for urban runoff, and that comes at significant cost.

Sustainable drainage alternatives allow integration of more ‘soft’ surfaces, which can act as sponges and filters. This restores some of the natural elements of the water cycle.

Water is able to be stored or slowed, which helps prevent flooding and promotes absorption. The permeable surfaces and vegetation also provide a series of simple treatment stages to maintain or improve water quality, including filtration, insect and microbial activities, and UV radiation.

Sustainable road drainage involves greater use of swales and permeable paving, alone or in combination. For buildings, sustainable drainage practices move beyond the traditional methods of diverting water from roofs and driveways into the underground storm water system, and embrace features such as green roofs and rain gardens which reduce the speed and quantity of runoff and provide natural filtration for better water quality. Swales can be combined with these features to collect the drainage from individual buildings.

Many of these features can be integrated into developments at comparable construction and maintenance costs to traditional approaches.

Counting the benefits

Driving the agenda

By increasing vegetation, sustainable drainage approaches not only ensure better water filtration and water retention, but also promote groundwater recharge by slowing the water flow and allowing percolation into the underground strata. More vegetation also means a greener urban environment, with habitats for plant, animal and insect life, space for recreation, and a more pleasant and appealing landscape for human habitation.

For these benefits to be realized, everyone must do their part to understand and increasingly apply sustainable drainage approaches. In some jurisdictions, more widespread implementation could be driven by support and direction from governing bodies to embed sustainable approaches into mandatory requirements. Similarly, local and regional authorities can move the agenda forward with the development of catchmentwide sustainable drainage master plans and quantification of the cost-effectiveness of these plans. An incentive program that returns cost savings to developers who incorporate sustainable drainage features is another opportunity to promote change.

Green roofs combine these biodiversity and amenity benefits, as well as helping to regulate building temperatures by insulating during the winter and absorbing heat during the summer.

But what does this mean to a developer in monetary terms, or in the short term? Can these amenity and environmental benefits be advantageous to the bottom line?

For developers, it is possible that development footprints could potentially be extended by counting elements such as green roofs, rain gardens, swales and permeable paving as significant portions of a development’s requirements for open space amenity as well as flood storage.

Development levies from local and regional authorities could be reduced if those authorities were to benefit from the reduced costs of water treatment and flood remediation. Strong environmental credentials for both developers and developments will appeal to increasingly socially and environmentally conscious consumers.

Designers who begin to allow for integration of sustainable drainage features at the earliest stages of design without increasing construction costs or significantly impacting on the density of the development will further demonstrate the advantages of sustainable approaches.

Exploring our options in the face of changing climate conditions is the responsible choice.

Taking the time to understand and promote the benefits of sustainable drainage solutions and educate others about those benefits is a first step. Once everyone involved in regulation, planning, design, construction and property development fully recognize the on-going benefits, we are far more likely to see wider incorporation of sustainable drainage and the greening and softening of our concrete jungles. It won’t be very long before our communities simply expect it.

TRAINING AWARD

Fixing the problem Metalcraft Roofing Fixer Training Centre wins Skills training award.

Back in 2017, it was widely recognised in the roofing industry that apprentices and trainees were struggling to complete their roofing qualifications – largely due to an inability to complete the work books. Installers working in the commercial sector were also at a disadvantage when signing up for the National Certificate, which is largely based on skills-based learning in a residential setting.

In an inspired decision to address this issue and ensure their trainees had every opportunity to complete both the practical and theory aspects of the qualification, Metalcraft Roofing (MCR) made the decision to establish MCR’s Fixer Training Centre.

This investment in training, along with a dedicated co-ordinator to support and encourage trainees through all parts of the qualification, earned MCR the Skills Top Roof Training Company of the Year award at this year’s RANZ conference in Queenstown.

It’s an initiative that has not gone unnoticed by other RANZ members for whom recruitment and training of suitable installers is frequently beset with the problem of

employees stalling when it comes to the written aspects of the National Certificate, which for many have proved hard to follow.

Since opening the Rotorua-based facility in April 2017, 26 MCR employees have completed their MRWC Level 4 qualification, reflecting the merit of the scheme in nurturing candidates through what for many is a challenging requirement.

The Skills award recognises that MCR has implemented newer or improved systems in the training workplace – something that works for them – and the support and encouragement for trainees is a clear demonstration of the company’s commitment to effective training. Their award means that MCR will be funded for an employee to benefit from an Institute of Management course, and this will likely be for the health and safety manager.

MCR’s dedicated training co-ordinator, Carolyne Hall opened the Fixer Training Centre in April 2017. Delegates at the RANZ conference in Rotorua that year had the opportunity to view how this initiative could

ensure more trainees are assisted through the course work. There have been three trainee/ supervisors in the workshop module training – Dean Lockley being currently responsible for skills training on the modules. Dean started roofing as an 18 year-old and has been with MCR for 22 years. He takes great pride in his ability to solve complex flashing problems and loves to share his ideas – making him a natural fit as a trainer.

“We had a few begin training and not finish due to personal circumstances, but the positive outcomes achieved in two years reflect the importance and the success of training and upskilling all MCR’s waged fixers working under MCR nationwide,” says Carolyne.

“For the first course, six new entry trainees, hoping to embark on a career in roofing, were enrolled at MCR’s facility. From those six debutantes, three have fully completed the qualification and are still working for MCR. One was a young man who came straight from school aged 16, another had just turned 17, and a 20-year-old with a new family. They were the first to embark on the MCR training scheme.

“None of these candidates knew much about roofing and the demands that would be made on them – physically, emotionally and educationally. Roofing is one of the most physically taxing trades to undertake, requiring stamina, resilience, physical maturity and, given the high-risk factors involved with working at height, the ability and willingness to understand team effort when it comes to workplace conduct and health and safety.”

All MCR’s training for its apprentices is centralised through Carolyne, including processing of work books and assessments.

Having a dedicated person in this role is a contributing reason why the Fixer Training Centre is a success story. Having earned the respect of trainees Carolyne will deliver large doses of mentoring, especially when candidates for the qualification seem to be struggling.

Roofers attending in Rotorua spend two days at the Fixer Training Centre receiving tuition in both the practical and theoretical aspects of the qualification. If a trainee is lacking in any area, they can be rolled through again to ensure that aspect is covered. In addition to training its own fixers, MCR runs training programmes for its fixer customers – particularly involving its speciality profiles like Espan.

Change is coming in the roofing qualification.

In order to align it with plumbing and gas fitting qualifications, candidates will now be required to satisfy a three-year period of practical and theoretical study for a New Zealand Roofing Certificate. While some of the elements of the new qualification are yet to be determined, MCR’s Fixer Training Centre, under the eye of co-ordinator Carolyne, is cautiously approaching the new programme Skills has announced which has two block courses in year three. She has concerns about the verification aspects outlined and the hike in fees that, at $42 a week for the three-year course, will be hard for many apprentices to afford in order to become qualified.

While what happened on the afternoon of 22 October was unprecedented, it could have occurred on a lesser scale at any one of dozens, perhaps hundreds, of building sites around the country. Learn from it.

Most of us watched – with a mix of trepidation and awe – as fires burned at the International Convention Centre at Sky City (ICCSC). And, in the aftermath, many theories have been bandied about by the media as to how it was started.

One thing is certain, however; the investigations will be ongoing for some time.

Blame aside, I have listed below some points we need to consider about how we are equipped to deal with events like this.

Mental health What support do you have available if your company were to be caught up in such an event? What direct support is there for those who may consider themselves the cause of such an event? What support do you have for yourself as you manage what has happened?

Supervision and training Are your staff adequately trained and/or supervised for carrying out work with an

ignition source? Are training records available? The applicable Hot Work Permit should contain set criteria. HSWA 2015 has a key part in the act around monitoring. This is simply making sure that the elements on the Hot Work Permit and the Safe Work Methods are being adhered too. Don’t just assume it is being done right – check (monitor).

Insurance Do you fully understand the insurance details in your contract? Do you have the correct types of cover for the insurable risks? For example, Business Interruption Insurance could be very wise. The ICCSC site could be closed for months.

If you were on a job of that scale, it could be using most, if not all, of your resources. That job has now stopped for an indefinite time.

How soon could you redeploy your workforce?

What about your plant and equipment, which you can’t access, or which has been destroyed?

Media strategy

The media will quickly latch on to any piece of information, no matter how trivial, to make a great sound bite or headline. Assign someone to speak for your company. Make that one person only. Any communications should focus on the safety of your staff.

Make a statement that there will be investigations. Do not mention any brands or products. Check the head contract requirements about media. It is okay to say “no comment”. Be aware of reputational damage. If it is divulged to the media that your company may have been involved, then your company will be judged, and at what expense? Investigative journalists do this stuff for a living; you don’t.

Health and safety The ability of this site to evacuate some 400 people safely shows how important both sign-in and emergency procedures are. It also shows that Fletchers appeared to have managed this very well. The focus was on people first, as it should be. Make sure you have adhered to your submitted documentation.

Putting the well into our being One in six New Zealanders is diagnosed with a common mental illness at some time in their lives, making this often-hidden health issue much more common than many of us realise. It means many of our employees are likely to be affected, either directly or indirectly. And, today, workplaces have a legal responsibility to manage risks to mental wellbeing in the same way as other health and safety risks.

This has been a breakthrough year in talking about the mental health of Kiwis in the construction sector. We’re finally talking about the value of talking about the things that bother us, that pain us, that get us down.

In my travels around New Zealand speaking in workplaces, I’ve been amazed at how many solid discussions people are having about mental health.

One of the people driving these talks is New Zealander of the Year Mike King. He must have cloned himself because that guy is everywhere, talking about mental health, getting Kiwis reaching out to each other.

But having a talk doesn’t have to be with your mates or your friends; there are plenty of people whose job it is to listen without judgement to the things that are building up.

I was at a Toolbox Talk recently in Wellington and the health and safety manager at LT McGuinness, Bryce Hunter, who is a funny, hard-case guy, spoke about how talking to a counsellor lifted a huge weight off his shoulders.

At this year’s Safeguard National Health and Safety Conference, Dr Kate Bryson and I presented the results of the Site Safe study on suicides in the construction sector. There was huge interest in the study, which shows how much people want to protect their friends, their family, their workmates.

Suicide is at the tragic end of the mental health continuum, and it is devastating that in the construction sector workers are six times more likely to die by suicide than by accident.

Poor mental wellbeing hits all parts of a person’s life. It’s a complex issue and often has many factors, but there is no doubt that the work environment can be a big factor.

In addition to workplaces having a duty to provide a safe working environment in all ways, supporting the mental wellbeing of workers has obvious benefits in several areas. These include better engagement, increased productivity, greater concentration and less absenteeism.

There are a few questions and opportunities everybody needs to think about to boost wellbeing at work.

· How easy is it for people to report issues that are hitting their mental wellbeing?

What support structures and policies does your organisation have in place? · How is worker mental health and wellbeing addressed in risk management planning, particularly in high-risk roles? Is it seen as just another HR issue to be managed? · How visible are the leaders in your organisation on this issue?

As an industry organisation, Site Safe has more than 6000 members and we will be asking them for examples of good practice that we can share.

Education and training are also important. We train nearly 80,000 workers every year, including many from the roofing industry.

That means we have a reach into the construction sector that is unequalled, and we will be taking a lead role in incorporating mental health training, working with key organisations such as Construction Health and Safety NZ (CHASNZ), the Mental Health Foundation and St John, as well as other training providers.

Finally, we need to ensure that we continue to break down the stigma that stops us talking about mental health. For men, role models such as Sir John Kirwan and Mike King have been influential in breaking down barriers, but we still have a long way to go. We can only succeed if we work together at all levels and across all industry sectors.

As an organisation, we are committed to doing our part to make a difference.

New Zealand’s leading manufacturer of quality steel, New Zealand Steel, hosted its inaugural COLORSTEEL® Awards at a gala event at Shed 10 on Auckland’s waterfront at the beginning of November.

In addition to the announcement of the Building of the Year, which was awarded to Wainui Construction’s Two Sheds in Raglan, the two other top category winners were both roofers and RANZ members.

First to be announced was the COLORSTEEL® Young Roofer of the Year, which was awarded to Vaughan Cook of Cowperthwaite Roofing Limited, based in Auckland. Vaughan’s winning project, located in the beachside suburb of Milford, used COLORSTEEL® FlaxPod®, in Steel & Tube's Euroline® Seamlok profile, and showcased his excellent craftsmanship early on in his roofing career.

Matthew McDougall of The Roofing Company in Canterbury was announced as the COLORSTEEL® Roofer of the Year for his work on the Dagg residence in Christchurch. The Dagg residence was built using COLORSTEEL®

in Metalcraft’s Espan® 470 profile for the roof and cladding. The project required technical expertise that highlighted Matthew’s roofing experience and skills.

“I really enjoyed the technicality of this project; it certainly got my brain working. It was a great month and a half of work. I’m stoked to be recognised for the hard work required as a roofer in the industry,” says Matthew.

This year’s competition was judged by an expert panel of five industry professionals with entries required to showcase exceptional use of COLORSTEEL® products including innovative designs and outstanding technical work.

Judges included media personality and builder, Peter Wolfkamp, architect Ken Crosson, roofing expert Rod Newbold, New Zealand Steel’s Chief Executive, Gretta Stephens, and Roofing Association New Zealand Chief Executive Officer, Graham Moor.

High flier Having a roofer win tradeswoman of the year shows that New Zealand’s roofing industry is well on track in terms of its strength and position in the construction business.

Elizsabeth (Liz) Watson of Stone Roofing won Tradeswoman of the Year with the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWiC), in partnership with BCITO, at the NAWiC Excellence Awards. The event, held at Auckland’s prestigious Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron venue on 27 September, 2019, was a true celebration of diversity and of those who have put in the hard yards for progress.

Liz, who’s a founding member and committee member of New Zealand Women In Roofing (NZWIR) and a member of NAWiC, co-owns Hamilton-based Stone Roofing Ltd with her partner Dan Stone.

BCITO, the major partner for the event this year, has ambitious organisational goals to influence an increase in the proportion of women in construction (to 30 percent by 2030). Chief executive Warwick Quinn says, “Women offer a new way of thinking, they’re good problem solvers, and help bring diversity to a male-dominated industry.”

RANZ executive committee member Paul Stanley-Boden echoes Quinn’s sentiments, debunking perceived obstacles and placing high value on having women on his team. “I have had a number of staff over the years, generally short term, of whom two have been women. Both cases were positive

experiences, in that the women brought a slightly different mindset to the job.

Obviously, there are key attributes such as reliability, honesty, work ethic, commonsense etc, that go into making a good employee, but it is a myth to think that the number one requirement for a roofer is brute strength and as such a bloke will be better.

The key product components for me are rolls of membrane, 45kgs and upwards. Yes, I can lift them… but should I? Probably not (c.f. manual handling guidelines). It is, in fact, a two-person lift and a relatively comfortable one, even if one of those persons is all of 60kg and 1.60m.”

Paul has also noticed a trend that he sees to be of significant value to his business, even if it’s at the expense of a bit of speed. “Now for the stereotypes, based entirely on my experiences!… the women have consistently been better at the detail.”

Paul says he is really impressed by Liz’s win, a view that is shared unanimously by the rest of the RANZ executive committee.

The NAWiC judges commented that Liz “both takes and makes opportunities”. In her acceptance speech, Liz highlighted some of the adversities she has overcome, with her ever-positive attitude shining through; she

also acknowledged her partner (and business partner in Stone Roofing) Dan, from whom she primarily learnt the trade, and thanked RANZ, too.

Graham Moor, CEO of RANZ, also recognises this winning attitude in Liz. “Having met Liz when she was announced as the trainee of the year in 2016, I am not at all surprised she has received the accolade of tradeswoman of the year. Liz shows what happens when you enjoy what you do, and you are driven to improve yourself and inspire those around you. Liz is a great listener who values the help she can get from her connections in the industry. RANZ is very proud of Liz – another in the extending line of wāhine toa [or warrior women] who have been part of RANZ since its inception.”

Liz says she loves her trade. "You’ll laugh, you’ll work hard and you’ll learn a specialist trade you can utilise everywhere, plus the bonus of getting to work in different surroundings all the time – which is good for the soul.”

Here’s hoping that many more join us and follow in Liz’s footsteps, too.

Knowledge is power With membership numbers on the rise, education is a priority at every level of our industry

What does education look like?

What have we been up to?

Education can take many different forms, but primarily it is about gaining information and knowledge through learning. Education is one of the four primary pillars for New Zealand Woman in Roofing, and our organisation believes it is imperative that women within the industry have the opportunity to learn about the roofing industry on all levels. We should never assume that our members know all there is to know – from coils to scale rulers and beyond, there is much to learn.

In Christchurch, the members have had two meetings on factory sites, the first at the Ardex factory, and the second at Metalcraft’s roofing and purlin factory. The team in Auckland had a factory tour of Thermakraft, and the Hamilton and Tauranga branches are organising a joint tour of the NZ Steel plant in Auckland.

Education does not have to be provided in a formal setting such as a classroom or lecture theatre, and learning in an informal setting has been proven to be stimulating and effective.

So, with that in mind, NZWiR branches around the country have taken on the challenge of providing educational opportunities for members. The best thing about this learning is that it all comes from within industry, without requiring any outside providers and at little cost to employers.

The time given freely by factory management and staff, and the knowledge imparted to the members has been greatly appreciated.

Often on the tours, there have been comments like, “Gee… I never knew that was how that was made!”, more proof that we should never take for granted the information that can empower a workforce.

Understanding the exclusions

Most of us are aware of the importance of having good insurance to protect against claims for injuries, accidents or property damage on the job, as well as for theft of tools and other issues. But it’s also essential to know what you’re not covered for, and be prepared for it.

Paying attention to any exclusion clause in your insurance policy becomes of critical importance at claim time, especially the building defects exclusion clause.

Don’t let this be your horror story

What happened?

In the following example published in a recent article that appeared on an Insurance Industry Technical website, an insurance claim was declined following a roof leak after a simple installation of equipment.

In this instance, the insurance claim was declined. This example was put to an expert insurance lawyer who explained that the exclusion was introduced in 2002 in response to the leaky building crisis; however, the broad wording means that not only are leaky buildings excluded, but so are any deficiencies by tradespeople that result in a lack of weathertightness. So, anything that the installer does which results in a leak will not be covered, leaving the client responsible for the damage.

Are you certain you have disclosed everything necessary, before filing a claim?

For example, it is common with modern roofs to use membrane or torched-on products.

The use of this type of product/process must be disclosed to your insurer. If it is not disclosed, it could result in a claim being declined. Disclosure of this type of process/ practice will often result in the insurer applying a Product Efficacy Clause. This clause effectively removes cover for this type of work. Does your current liability policy have this clause included? If so, do you understand the potential ramifications in the event of damage occurring?

Hazardous Substances Register Implementation: a small business case study

Hazardous substances are defined as any product or chemical that has properties that are explosive, flammable, oxidising, toxic, corrosive or toxic to the environment (source WorkSafe).

Anyone working in the construction industry is likely to have access to hazardous substances. Obviously, as a membrane roofer, I carry a quite a range of “nasties” such as adhesives, solvent and LPG, but even small things like silicone sealant and touch-up paint can be classed as hazardous.

The Health & Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA) came into force in 2016 with the aim of protecting people against harm to their health, safety and welfare from risks at work. WorkSafe‘s role is to implement and enforce HSWA. In December 2017, the rules around managing hazardous substances in the workplace was transferred to the Hazardous Substances Regulations under HSWA. What all that means is that every business must manage its hazardous substances risk.

This means you, and whether you have one vehicle, or 50, or a workshop holding hazardous substances, then you must manage the risk in terms of handling, storage, labelling, registers, safety data sheets, signage, training, etc.

The WorkSafe website has a 10-point plan on how to manage that risk, so I will not go into that here. Instead I will go through the process I went through about 18 months ago in an attempt to comply with the regulations.

As you work through the information provided on the WorkSafe site you will realise fairly quickly that you need quite a lot of Safety Data Sheets (SDS) on hand – in fact, one for everything you carry that is classed as hazardous. Safety Data Sheets are essentially the same as the older MSDSs, although you may notice a more standardised layout of information.

In most cases I found that the SDS were easy enough to locate on the manufacturers’ websites. For example, Ardex has SDS that are downloadable for everything it sells on the products’ page: www.ardex.co.nz/product/ardex-wa-98

Be aware, however, that the data sheets must not be more than five years old – if they are too old, all you can really do is contact the supplier and request an update. The good news is that the main players are well organised in this area. It tends to be the smaller importers that are lagging behind.

Solution: ring WorkSafe for advice. I explained my predicament and the good people at WorkSafe acknowledged that I had a legitimate concern, although they did not have a ready solution on hand. What they did suggest, though, was that I call one of WorkSafe’s registered compliance certifiers for help.

You will also see on the WorkSafe site a number of references to the Hazardous Substances Calculator. This is a good tool for establishing your inventory and it includes many substances automatically loaded and referenced under their HSNO (hazardous substances and new organisms)l number. You will need to have the safety data sheets on hand as you work your way through the calculator.

Compliance certifiers are independent (of WorkSafe) but authorised by WorkSafe to issue compliance certificates. WorkSafe lists approved certifiers on its website at: www.compliancecertifiers.worksafe.govt.nz

One of the outcomes you will get as you use the calculator is a set of incompatibilities, that is, which substances need to be isolated from one another, for example, LPG and adhesive.

There is also an indication of quantities that can be safely stored; for example, I found I could not store more than 15 litres of adhesive.

Needless to say, I found the incompatibility recommendations alarming. For six months of the year I cannot do my job without LPG to dry the substrate. Once it’s dry I need adhesive to attach the membrane. And I need more than 15 litres! Clearly this is a problem – do I take multiple trips to the jobsite? Do I take 5 litres out the standard 20-litre drum of adhesive every morning? Why am I only allowed 15 litres anyway, when the LTSA allows 100 litres on a vehicle?

My first thought was “this could be expensive!”, but there weren’t a lot of options, so I picked a name from the WorkSafe list and rang. Once again, I explained my predicament to my randomly selected certifier, and got some guidance.

The certifier explained that the Hazardous Substances Calculator is more designed around the factory or workshop scenario. It doesn’t, for example, differentiate between a 2 kg and a 90 kg LPG bottle, in terms of controls. The certifier explained that the substances I carry on my truck are “tools of trade” and so are not subject to quite the same level of control.

It is important to remember that the 10-point plan still applies. You may not need to take four trips to site or invest in a “bomb-proof” hazardous goods storage box for your vehicle, but you still need to get the basics under control.

The key points from the advice I received were: · Everything must be labelled properly. I decant solvent and adhesive from the 20 litre drums into smaller containers for ease of use, safety etc. Each of these containers is labelled in exactly the same way as the 20-litre container. You can probably ask your supplier for smaller labels or, as I did, scan a full-size label and get it printed smaller. · These smaller containers must be appropriate for the substance, i.e., they won’t dissolve or corrode. If you’re not sure, then get advice. · Storage is important. Be mindful of ventilation – the deck of the ute is good, the back seat is not. Secure anchoring is essential – make sure the gas bottle or solvent drum is tied down and can’t become airborne in transit. Consider spill containment – have some means of containing the substance should the container fail. Spill trays are commonly available. Think about proximity of incompatible products or heat sources – your SDS will tell you if you should store your substance with an acid/alkali etc. · Safety Data Sheets must be available for everything you carry. That includes the little things, like the can of CRC, silicone, touch-up paint, some cleaning products etc. · It’s ok to maintain your SDS electronically rather than on paper. You could even carry them as a link to the supplier to ensure that they always remain current. It is important, though, that the SDS are always accessible.

So, the phone call to the certifier resulted in two excellent outcomes. It was a relatively simple process to meet my obligations under the Hazardous Substances Regulations of the HSWA Act, and the advice provided by the Certifier was free.

· Records must be kept up to date. The SDS cannot be over five years old. Your register of hazardous substances is generated by the WorkSafe Calculator, so you should have that available. · The WorkSafe register is meant to be used in tandem with the SDS. I have, however, noticed that some site safety officials want you to provide considerably more detail in your register than WorkSafe’s calculator produces. They are simply asking you to re-write the SDS contents into the register.

Deep impact Could the use of rattle guns compromise long-term screw performance? Some industry experts think so.

An on-going perceived issue that the roofing and cladding industry faces in New Zealand is the use of rattle guns or impact drivers when installing roofing screws. The use of this type of tool could cause multiple issues that may affect the performance of a roof or cladding, which may result in costly remedial work at a later time. We asked a handful of industry experts for their opinions and experiences of working with impact drivers.

First up, we asked NZMRM (New Zealand Metal Roof Manufacturers) representative and industry expert, Tony Rallis, for his opinion. Tony acknowledges that there is much controversy around the use of impact drivers in his industry and, while some installers favour the use of these tools, he says there is strong opinion that they can damage the protective coating on the screw head, which will affect durability thereof; adding that this also holds true for poorly fitting and/or worn nut setters.

“At the NZMRM, we recognise that there are many different drills and impact drivers available and consequently our Code of Practice (v3.0) says: “Impact drivers and poorly fitting nut drivers can both damage the protective coating on the screw head which will affect durability. It is the roofer’s responsibility to ensure that his/her method of installing screws does not cause damage” [that could possibly void the warranty].”

“As many of the fastener suppliers recommend against the use of impact drivers, any damage that may occur due to their use may affect the manufacturer’s warranty on the product

in the event of a claim,” he goes on to say. “As such we would urge caution and recommend that you do not use an impact driver, unless you have discussed and gained approval and clear guidelines for their use from the supplier of the screw being used, taking care to avoid both screw and profile damage.”

One such supplier is Konnect Fastening Systems, citing that they are too quick and have too much torque. Here is a detailed list of arguments from Konnect against their usage: • Impact drivers are too quick. They are not designed for self-drilling screws, particularly into steel.

• The tips of self-drilling screws are easily damaged by an Impact driver which can result in burn-out or poor drilling performance (would you use an impact driver to drill a hole into a piece of steel?).

• You may damage or break threads into steel purlins, resulting in severely reduced holding power (the screws could pull out in a high wind situation).

• When using an Impact driver the magnetic sockets may damage and

remove the powder coat or paint from the head of the screw.

• The magnetic sockets may also damage the corrosion protection coating, resulting in premature rusting on the head of the screw.

• It is too easy to overdrive fasteners particularly on pan fixed products, creating dishing around the fastener.

• They do not have a clutch or depth locator to reduce overdriving problems.

• Excessive torque can result in cracking under the heads on pan fixed screws.

• They are extremely noisy, particularly when drilling into steel.

• They require the roofer to use hearing protection.

In their statement regarding the use of impact drivers, Buildex uses a more conciliatory tone. Dyslexia in the workplace Dyslexia is an extremely common learning difficulty that affects one in 10 workers in New Zealand, which means there is a good chance that you could find one of those people in your workplace.

To give those with dyslexia the best opportunity to thrive and succeed in their work, it is important to provide them with the right support.

Here, we will help you understand more about dyslexia, how to identify dyslexic staff members in the workplace, and how to help them reach their highest potential.

Firstly, it’s important to understand what dyslexia is and how it can both challenge and improve the lives of those living with it. Dyslexia affects an individual’s ability to read or interpret words, letters and other symbols, and is considered a difficulty – not a disability – in learning that causes affected individuals to process information differently. While dyslexia does present challenges concerning how they learn, it does not affect the general intelligence of a person, or their ability to achieve highly and be successful in their work. Some of the world’s most creative and successful people, including Albert Einstein, Steven Spielberg and Steve Jobs, have been dyslexic.

While the above signs all relate to some of the more challenging aspects of dyslexia, these individuals are still able to be very successful.

Research on dyslexia has shown that these individuals often demonstrate superior creative thinking, socioemotional skills and visuospatial abilities. Celebrating and supporting these unique strengths in the workplace can improve the individual’s confidence, experience at work, and the quality of work they produce.

Several methods can be incorporated into the workplace to do so, including: · Providing digital tools to assist dyslexic workers, e.g., screen readers, voice recognition software, voice-to-text software, readback scanners and other special apps

Learning some of the common signs of dyslexia can be useful in helping to identify these individuals in the workplace so that they can be supported.

· Using visual strategies such as mind mapping to illustrate tasks

Some of the signs include:

· Breaking down detailed tasks and giving one instruction at a time

· Showing a significant difference between their ability to do a job and their results in tests and assessments

· Organising written information into chunks so that it is easier to digest

·

Reluctance to read or write around others

· Difficulty with time management and organisation · Reluctance to seek or accept promotions or positions in which reading and writing may be more important · Impatience or disinterest in formal settings · Limited short-term memory but excellent long-term memory · Confusion between left- and right-hand sides – many people with dyslexia are also ambidextrous · Taking long periods of time to complete tasks, even with significant effort applied

· Using visual tools such as diagrams and images in notices to break up the text and provide context

·

Providing GPS for workers who travel a lot

· Pairing dyslexic workers with others for heavy reading and writing tasks, or allowing them extra time to complete them alone · Providing administrative support or a proofreader.

As each dyslexic person has a slightly different experience, it may take a bit of experimentation to find the best combination of support to suit those in your workplace. Recognising that most dyslexic people learn best through hands-on experience, demonstrations, experimentation and visual aids can make a valuable change for your dyslexic workers and apprentices. Premier job in Gizzy Coastline Roofing Gisbourne, recently completed this show home for Premier Homes using Metrotile CF Slate Roof; Tile Colour - Charcoal Blend. Coastline owner, Jose Vera, says it was a pretty complicated roof plan and the finished job looks amazing.

One of the main challenges his team faced was coming to grips with a new concealed system of fixing that is particular to this product, together with the 30-degree pitch, as well as working around the ten skylights on the roof. The end result looks great and was very satisfying from a roofer’s perspective and the client was equally delighted. The house is now fully finished and the show home is open to the public and getting great feedback.

An education in roof design This old roof Chris Henderson from Comag, Matamata, has sent in this pic of his wife’s grandparents farm in Bannockburn, Central Otago, which was once the station for early settlers that moved into the area in the Gold Mining days. He says the roof is not far from needing replacing, not because the iron is rusty, but because the timber work beneath is buggered. It is bewildering to him how it doesn’t leak. The old under overlap system was completely mucked up, there are holes for Africa, looses fixings and no flashings around some chimneys, yet the ceilings are good as gold. He doesn’t like his chances on a workmanship warranty claim, however! Obviously the house is a heritage site, so there’ll be plenty of red tape to get through, but either way he says it will almost be a shame to see the old roof go as it is such a part of the home’s character not to mention the history.

The Freemans Bay School redevelopment in Auckland is more than just a refurbishment of a school – it was so well received, it has become the flagship for the future design of schools in New Zealand. Over the 18 months, Topline Roofing was involved in the project, with nearly every one of their team spending time on site. With over 4,000m2 of roofing and cladding, it was an immense undertaking with heavy cranes, a multitude of scaffolding, and Topline’s Trade Services Plumbing and Gasfitting team also on-site to install all the plumbing and gas services. With the praise from the Ministry of Education, the joy in their new school from the Freemans Bay children and teachers, and more work coming in, this has been a very positive outcome all round for Topline Roofing.

A Christchurch.

Q Years in roofing?

A About 20.

Q How did you get started in roofing?

A It was a forced career change so I fell back on the skills I’d learnt as a plumber’s labourer in the late 70s. I also had a huge amount of support from a roofer / RANZ member to build a new career and business.

Q Favourite roof?

A One that works (if it’s one I’ve done), but in terms of aesthetics, there’s a pub in Leipzig, Germany, with a 45-degreeplus tile roof. It’s extreme craftsmanship and the beer was quite good, too.

Q Favourite beach?

A Tata Beach, Nelson Bays.

Q Favourite movie?

A Don’t really do movies, but I guess Star Wars usually gets me into a cinema.

Q Family nucleus?

A At home there’s just us – Sally and me.

The three kids (and three grandkids) took me far too literally when I suggested they see the world.

Q Favourite brew o’ beer?

A Don’t think there is such a thing. There is a beer for every occasion. Cassells make a nice red IPA for a warm arvo; Bach Brewing’s porter is a good winter warmer.

Q What motivates you?

A Umm… hard one. I’d like to think money and world domination, but probably I’m more driven by a sense of fair play and doing things right.

Q What’s on my playlist?

A I have five concerts lined up currently – Kiss, Alice Cooper, Elton John, Cowboy Junkies and Katherine Jenkins. Normal go-to is Bruce Springsteen and Pearl Jam.

Q What do you do day to day?

A I’m a Butynol roofer, on the tools when the sun shines. I ensure that water features are confined to the garden.

Q What makes a top roofer?

A Quite a few things: skill, professionalism, integrity, accountability, team player and attention to detail.

Q Favourite products/brand? Why? A LP records… great for escapism, entertainment, education and exercise (you need to turn them over every 20 minutes or so).

Q Where will roofing be in 20 years?

A I see technology making the trade less labour-intensive and more technically driven. There will always be a key role for the smart, skillful tradesperson, and that requires the roofing trade (RANZ) to be continually working on improving technical excellence, professionalism and accountability.
