Kia ora tātou, This bumper edition of RoofLink offers you the opportunity to take a few moments out to breathe and enjoy, firstly via reflecting on and celebrating our 100th issue milestone!

RANZ’s RoofLink magazine has been a constant companion to the roofing community and sector’s development for 25 years now and counting. It’s an honour to be its current editor, and I would like to acknowledge all past and present contributors, especially Jenny Bain, who was the longest-serving editor and who maintains strong links still, being a valuable regular contributing writer – see, from page 8, our reflections and highlights of the publication’s history to date.

2022 marks Te Pae Christchurch being open for business and is a notable milestone for Aotearoa New Zealand. The new state-of-theart convention centre is of local and national significance, with the upcoming RANZ Conference lined up to try out the sparkling new facilities on June 9 & 10 (see p21 for all the details). The roofing and cladding project was substantial, spanning three years and clocking up valuable learnings and team wins for Graham Hill Roofing. Check out the project story from p14.

Watching out for you, the article by RANZ Executive Paul Stanley-Boden is simply an excellent must-read with eye-openers into

the liability that roof advisory of numerous forms opens up. With contributions from Hazelton Law and Austinsure representatives, there’s essential information for members to note well (p34). And Rod Newbold offers valuable technical insight into purlin creasing and timber shrinkage (p37).

Our Training Company of the Year, Topline, shares their thoughts on building a successful training culture within a team – valuable insight to help us collectively bring more talent through the ranks in roofing (p29). On that note, we also look at our rising stars in roofing and where some past trainees with promise are now (p39).

Go Soft to Stay Strong (p44) is an article from Skills that highlights the importance of wellness and includes information on our new RANZ Member Employee Assistance Programme (EAP). Upon reflecting on the history of RoofLink, it’s worth paying thought to where we are now. CEO Autumn 2022 If you are reading this, you are about to read our 100th edition of RoofLink. This is a significant milestone for one of the key connectors to everyone in the roofing industry in New Zealand. Stephanie Fill, our current editor, has produced another great edition, which includes an article highlighting this RANZ achievement and the history of RoofLink from humble beginnings (on page 8).

I fully admit I’m a roofing tragic, but I have always enjoyed reading RoofLink over the years. Like all things, it matures and grows with the times. And while it is now available in a digital version, we were left in no doubt when we went fully digital during the first Covid lockdown as to what your preference is – printed, please!

Jenny Bain has been our longest-serving editor, and so it is with some pride that she should reflect on where she left RoofLink and the fine hands it is in today. Jenny built up a solid group of contributors, and I’m guessing that the late Stuart Thomson would have been the most popular out of them all.

We frequently get calls about content in past editions. So the relevancy is there, which still makes RoofLink a must-read for anyone connected to or interested in our industry.

Thanks to all those who have contributed over the years. The hero roofs our members showcase are fabulous, whatever the roofing product. The craft that is evident is great to see – please keep sending them in. The human interest stories show the kind of people that abound in our industry. There are lots of characters, that’s for sure.

RoofLink captures all of this, and it is so important to collect and acknowledge your history.

Plenty have asked about whether Conference is going ahead in June. We are still planning to have Conference. However, we have a couple of contingencies if we get caught out.

An online event will be held virtually. That would also entail going to Christchurch in 2023. I have looked through the Te Pae Christchurch venue, and it is a stunning asset for the City of Christchurch (see project article from p14).

I am well aware of the supply and employment problems out there. Our industry suppliers are doing the best they can, and they too have much to contemplate and manage, just like the roofing company owners. I have heard stories of ghost orders, where the same roof is ordered at different suppliers, and they take whoever can deliver it first! None of this helps. It only puts more load on all concerned.

I cannot stress enough the importance of clear communications with your suppliers, your customers, and your people. It will be lumpy and crunchy for some time to come.

Horizon Hydrogen Solutions and Guard-Change at NZ Steel Researchers at the Robinson Research Institute have developed a novel technology that uses hydrogen instead of coal to produce iron and steel – a breakthrough step in New Zealand’s transition to a climateresilient and low greenhouse gas emissions future.

Teaming up with Wellington UniVentures and New Zealand Steel, the organisations aim to accelerate the development of a pilot-scale reactor for this process, located at New Zealand Steel’s Glenbrook site. This collaboration will explore how innovation in low- or zero-emission technologies could be adopted to update a process that has remained the same since the Iron Age. Research and innovation have a critical role in accelerating the steel industry’s transition to a low carbon future. The project contributes to the decarbonisation pathway set out by New Zealand Steel’s parent company, BlueScope, that has set a 12% steelmaking intensity reduction target by 2030 and a net-zero goal by 2050 across its operations.

New Zealand Steel Chief Executive Robin Davies says he welcomes the opportunity to support a homegrown solution for New Zealand and the world to decarbonise. “New Zealand’s decarbonisation pathway relies heavily on innovation, development, and transition in the construction, infrastructure, manufacturing, and agricultural sectors. That transition will require steel and an abundant supply of competitively-priced renewable electricity. New Zealand Steel is committed to doing its part in reducing New Zealand’s emissions. This collaboration with Wellington UniVentures is just one part of our climate action strategy to help reach our net-zero goal, and we look forward to seeing the results,” says Davies.

Robin Davies has taken the mantle as CEO, moving from his former post as General Manager of Marketing and Sales, with former CEO Gretta Stevens having now taken on Chief Executive Climate Change & Sustainability at BlueScope, based in Melbourne.

Minimum Wage Increase The Minimum wage is increasing to $21.20 per hour, from 1 April 2022, with the starting-out and training minimum wage also rising from $16.00 to $16.96 per hour from 1 April 2022.

“Many Kiwis who earn the minimum wage have gone above and beyond in our fight against COVID-19. We remain committed to supporting New Zealanders by raising their wages as we continue to recover and rebuild from the pandemic,” Workplace Relations and Safety Minister Michael Wood said.

Roofers Supporting Tonga Following the summer break and not far into 2022, the Tonga earthquake and tsunami had a devastating effect on our pacific cousins. The team Prestige Roofing in Matamata supported their Q.S Mahé Tamihana-Pofelē to swiftly organise sourcing supply, freight and funds for emergency relief contributions, with support from their local New World, donating bottled water along with the backing from other kind local folk.

RoofLink hits one hundred!

Although we’re not expecting a telegram from Her Majesty, the one-hundred-issue milestone is certainly a cause to celebrate at RANZ. Here are some of the highlights of the publication from the past 25 years.

The year was 1997. RANZ had been established in 1994 and, with much to inform members about, a four-sided A4 newsletter, RANZ News, was the start of what would become a well-established publishing tradition for the Association, which marks 100 issues this time around.

Thomo’s tips

Along with the myriad of other tasks facing CEO Lorraine Mills, with religious fervour, she produced a regular communique to ensure the growing number of roofing companies signing up for membership were kept well informed on matters of interest to the sector.

The evolution of RoofLink had begun.

“Our business partners ensure that RoofLink reaches a wide audience of people not directly linked to RANZ and our industry. So while online channels have become an important tool in the delivery of information to our members, RoofLink remains a significant cog in the way we deliver news pertinent to our industry – and it also helps build our community of roofing contracting companies and our business partners.”

The first 12-page edition was published three years later, in 1997, with a masthead design was by life member Roger Martin’s daughter, Josephine. Various board members started contributing articles and, gradually, the benefit of having a regular magazine became established.

As the roofing industry enhanced its profile, RoofLink also emphasised the significance of roofing as a specialist trade, with many topics of current interest and ongoing concerns being expressed via the four issues produced each year. As RANZ worked to raise the profile of the roofing trade, RoofLink had a pivotal role in supporting these initiatives within its pages.

As RANZ CEO Graham Moor recalls: “RoofLink has been a constant reference point for a lot of people in our industry and continues in this role. Whether it be licensing, working at

Professional development Journalist Hugh Patterson was employed to edit the magazine in a freelance capacity, continuing in this role until 2004, when Jenny Bain was hired to produce RoofLink in-house through until 2017.

A new level of professionalism arrived in 2001 through Lithoprint’s PrePress Manager and Designer, Suzanna Kong, who helped develop a distinctive style for the magazine.

Suzanna also provided design material for the conference every year, designing publicity material that was highly valued. This relationship ended in 2018 when Wellingtonbased print and production were reviewed, and the editor’s role transitioned.

Stuart Thomson, the highly regarded metal roofing expert – the one everyone refers to as the author of the first New Zealand Metal Roofing Code of Practice – became a contributor on technical issues in 2005 with the column Thomo’s Tips.

Providing 38 articles on a range of topics, Stuart also had the gift of being good with words and could be relied on to deliver pertinent and lively comments on key issues affecting the industry. Topics like timber treatment and the roofer; the importance of roof ventilation; gutter apron gripes; noisy roofs; new insulation changes to NZBC H1; energy efficiency; what every roofer should know about extreme events; are you using the suitable fastener?; and are warm roofs the future of roofing? – this advice from Thomo was gold to RANZ member companies for educational purposes, owing to the topical appeal of what was relevant to roofing at the time.

A new era Following Stuart’s passing in 2015, in his 87th year, RANZ was fortunate to engage Rod Newbold, who has edited further revises of the Code of Practice, and to this day, has taken on the role of the technical writer at RoofLink. Having previously lauded Stuart’s breadth of knowledge and expertise, Rod’s contributions to Rooflink mirror the important ‘tricky bits’ that Thomo would often write about, like boot flashings, internal

gutters, valleys and downpipes, fastener standard revision, etc.

In 2007, designer Suzanna produced a new template (fonts) and revised masthead design, but perhaps the most significant improvement was the publication of a roof image on the front page, doing away with text, apart from a few teasers for internal content. The then editor, Jenny Bain, says this was one of the hardest battles she had to win with the CEO! But few would disagree that many outstanding roofing projects from members are worth celebrating on the cover page of RoofLink.

Enjoyed by everyone Industry partners of RANZ have enjoyed having a dedicated magazine for RANZ member companies. Says Shane Pratt, Dimond/Fletcher Steel: “Dimond Roofing has been an active advertiser and contributor to the RoofLink publication over many years. We value the direct connection that the magazine provides between us and our important roofing market and wider roofing fraternity. It has been and will remain to be a key component of our marketing mix and is seen as an effective medium to get our news and updates out to the right people.

Internally, it is highly valued as well. The content is invaluable, whether it be research, installation advice, or a focus on a recent project. Each of our branches likes to get copies and, importantly, it is actually noticed when for some reason the copies don’t arrive.”

“What has always stood out to me over the years has been the professionalism and quality of the RoofLink magazine”, says Kerry Andrew, CEO for Ampelite (NZ) Ltd. “Over the 25 years, RANZ has become a respected and very professional body representing roofing contracting in this country, and there is no doubting the contribution RoofLink has made to this success.”

Brendon Sutton, sales and marketing manager, Viking RoofSpec (who has also contributed technical articles), adds that RoofLink is a high-quality and informative publication that has always punched above its weight. “While RANZ has continued to push hard to lift the roofing profession’s profile and deem it more of a specialised, high-skilled trade than it has often been given credit for, RoofLink has echoed RANZ’s crusade by continuously turning out a high-quality product. Past and present stakeholders of RoofLink are to be congratulated for their constant level of professionalism.”

There for the members As a conduit between the association and its members, the magazine has, according to life member Mike Sentch, contributed to engendering a collegial atmosphere within the membership. As an instructive ‘tool’, RoofLink has proved invaluable to members and other magazine recipients, he says.

“From inception, the ‘mailout’ article, consisting of just a few pages addressing both technical and other issues current at the time through to the present day, RoofLink has made good reading. Regulatory matters around licensing, safety in the workplace, discussion regarding upskilling roofers and material compatibility, information about products and systems, retentions and other contractual matters, RoofLink has always ensured members are well informed.”

Roofing Industries’ architectural manager, David Eccles-Hall, confirms the value of RoofLink and the way it has featured areas of concern and advice. David was the Associate’s representative on the RANZ Executive for five years and worked closely with the editorial team on government policy and various standards committees – often in conjunction with Thomo. continued on page 13 Issue 100 • Autumn 2022

"There have been many changes in the roofing industry and lots of innovation. However, there is still much to challenge roofing contractors going forward. They will need to constantly upskill and move with the new ideas and methods that make this industry so unique and interesting. Embrace change, but never hesitate to challenge aspects of design, which could expose you to problems down the track.

“Designers don’t always know what they’re doing when it comes to roof and wall cladding details and need input from specialist roofers. I’m pleased to say that architects have started to appreciate our contribution in recent times. Overall there is a more collegial approach, from the initial drawing stage through to finding practical solutions from all those involved.”

Te Pae Christchurch Te Pae Christchurch, the Garden City’s impressive new convention centre, has risen from the rubble of its predecessor. For Graham Hill Roofing, its roof presented an immense challenge and an opportunity to showcase their skills and experience.

Many non-Cantabrians look to the region’s folk with admiration, awe and respect for their resilience in surviving the catastrophic 2011 earthquakes. For the most part, though, Cantabrians seem eager to move the conversation on and look to their future.

RANZ members have made significant contributions to the roofing rebuild efforts.

For the future of Canterbury, perhaps one of the most significant is Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre – a new, state-of-the-art facility that will serve not only the region but the whole of the country. Te Pae Christchurch replaces the original Christchurch Convention Centre, demolished in 2012, having been irreparably damaged in the earthquakes. And as if the rebuild itself wasn’t enough to grapple with, along came COVID-19.

It was initially scheduled to take 1.5 years to install the roofing and related systems, a year into the roofing project, the COVID-19 pandemic hit. This saw the complexities of the project mount and the timeline blow out to three years. But, as of the start of 2022, the centre is now open for business. Te Pae Christchurch is estimated to bring in $60 million a year for the region. With an investment of $450 million, the return outlook so far seems promising with a busy events schedule booked for 2022 – including hosting this year’s RANZ Conference in June.

The finished product is impressive, perhaps looking more like a giant sculpture than a building. Inspired by the rivers of the Canterbury Plains with patterns and colours in the tradition of Ngāi Tahu, the design was co-created by architects Woods Bagot and Warren & Mahoney, with close consultation with Matapopore Charitable Trust. The striking façade, consisting of steel framing and concrete-based tile, was installed by Alufix.

Behind that and on top, however, is where the team’s work at Graham Hill Roofing (GHR) sits – “the important stuff,” quips GHR operations manager, Zach McKay. Zach oversaw the demanding project, which required numerous design solutions from the GHR team. The project ended up having 85 variations in total, “[variations] documentation was coming through daily”, says Zach.

Before getting to site to commence installation, Zach, along with Glenn Milroy, GHR Business Development Manager, engaged in an extensive series of meetings over 12 months in preparation. The team met with project managers CPB contractors in conjunction with key supplier RoofLogic.

RoofLogic has an experienced in-house design and engineering team, which enabled them to design a bespoke warm roof system solution for the project. “One of the key

performance requirements related to the acoustic performance of the roof system,” explains Graham Tennent from Rooflogic.

“Managing sound reverberation within the auditorium spaces required the use of our deep-section, perforated liner tray, and targeting a rating around STC 60 required a build-up with multiple layers of Rooflogic’s high-density Stonewool and Acoustic Board.”

The extensive facilities include a 1000-seat banquet hall, 1400-seat auditorium, vast exhibition space, and 24 meeting rooms.

Kicking off from October 2018, the roofing, cladding, flashing and installation of the internal gutter systems of Te Pae Christchurch was a full-time job for three years for key project team members from GHR. This included foreman Tyson Wormington and site manager Dylan Frapwell, along with their membrane specialist for the internal gutters, Ernesto Mandoza, and Tyson’s Leading Hand, Karl Tritt. Tyson credits Karl, who he says “helped big time and made my job a lot easier.”

At any one time, GHR had up to 20 people onsite through the roof installation period, with the internal gutters, in particular, taking the most extended amount of time.

Dylan was ‘on the tools’ for one month as the original foreman from the project’s outset.

Then, due to the demanding scale of the build,

Tyson was brought on board, with Dylan taking on the site manager role full time.

After working for GHR for ten years (six years as an employee and four years before that as a contractor), Te Pae Christchurch was an opportunity for Dylan to step up. It was also a great learning opportunity for Tyson to work on a project of this scale. He moved down from Wellington to join the GHR team with 17 years of roofing under his belt.

Health and Safety During the project’s three years, Tyson can rightfully boast that there was only one injury on his watch, occurring while safety procedures were correctly adhered to. One guy reached down to get something that had fallen into the safety nets and popped his shoulder out. The onsite crane could easily reach him with the rescue cage, and he was back at work the following week.

As expected, head contractors CPB had strict safety requirements in place. The GHR team weren’t allowed to get on any roof until both edge-protection was around the perimeter and drop nets from Safety Nets NZ were all in place. Where the scaffold couldn’t reach, a man-cage off the crane while being harnessed on was required, coupled with a drop-net system in place also. continued on page 16 Issue 100 • Autumn 2022

And of course, the COVID-19 health requirements came into effect from 2020, meaning interaction with other contractors was strictly limited, causing delays and difficulties across the project. For Tyson and the team, this meant no one could leave site once signed in for the day either, changing the work-day dynamic significantly.

The high-performance RoofLogic systems made up most of the roofing. There were four separate Rooflogic systems, each designed to meet the facility’s performance requirements or various spaces, covering 10,881sqm. Logistics and installation methodology was significant and a daily challenge for the GHR team.

It’s easy to see how the team got through, though, with Tyson’s calm, grounded approach showing through while reflecting on the project, “…you’ve got to take it day-by-day, and not stress yourself out about things,” he says.

Bespoke roofer-designed solutions After 12 months of meetings and with their approved roofing solutions, the team had to install five different roof types. The plant rooms (x5) that sat on top were the most straightforward, with traditional commercialstyle iron, battens and paper – not requiring the high R-value acoustic performance soundproofing of the others because they sat on top of them. This part of the job made up 3800sqm of the team’s efforts.

The main central roof covering the auditorium, exhibition hall, and meetingroom areas are around 500mm thick and use RoofLogic’s acoustic build-up system. The system here consisted of a top deck of 0.55mm metal Topdek T, followed by roof underlay. Then the four layers of Stonewool were sandwiched between two layers of the acoustic soundboard, with a vapour control layer before the bottom board, and then an acoustic sound blanket with a perforated liner cassette. The rest of the roofing areas

were variations on this system, with a portion of the Administration area was roofed with a Fibretite membrane top deck layer, as used with the internal gutters.

With so many materials for each layer, there was a lot of rubbish to deal with during installation.

Every second day or so, the team had to spend a few hours having it craned down and sorting the waste into the designated bins onsite for recycling where possible.

A massive undertaking Overall the team installed 14,681sqm of roofing. On top of this, they crafted 670m length of insulated membrane internal gutters. The team also installed the cladding in Multirib, supplied by Roofing Industries.

The two aspects of the project that presented the most technical challenges were the internal gutters and the seismic joints. With 85 variations in the project, the team worked closely with RoofLogic to propose solutions at each required step.

The team had to propose and then craft their own gutter solution into the RoofLogic system for the internal gutters. A lot of the

gutters were built with the structure of the building, but there were some areas where the team had to make it themselves.

Working in with the up to 11-layer RoofLogic system, they devised a solution of laying half the RoofLogic system down to connect in; then the guttering was laid on top, meaning no structural changes were required. The membrane top layer used Fibretite, with their membrane specialist Ernesto Mandoza on the application. Waterproofing here was intricate work, made more challenging than it would have otherwise been if they had been able to install it before the roof was laid. The team got the job done well nevertheless.

Special requirements Naturally, extensive seismic joints were also required throughout the facility, separating off different areas from each other. GHR engaged seismic joint specialists, Construction Specialties Ltd., to help the team. These joints added to the technical challenges for waterproofing around the areas while maintaining the integrity of the soundproofing also.

Challenges and Learnings

Best of mates

The GHR team are happy with the project and proud to have played a crucial part in creating such an iconic facility for the region.

With the gift of hindsight, one area that could have had added benefits to the project as a whole would have been if an enhanced appreciation of the roofing logistics had been held from the outset – and project requirements stemming from that were able to be prioritised and accommodated. Of course, all specialist trades may advocate for their unique importance, but concerning weather-proofing, roofing undoubtedly has a crucial role to play for the best possible success of a project.

Not having known each other before this project, foreman Tyson and site manager Dylan now have a strong friendship, with Dylan even having been invited to be a groomsman at Tyson’s wedding. The two were both learning on the job and supporting each other. They very wisely set up a weekly ritual of catching up together after work on Wednesday (payday!) via ‘having a beer’. This helped them get through the project’s challenges while keeping a good working relationship. “That’s probably been the best thing that’s come out of [working on] Te Pae [Christchurch] for me: the friendship,” notes Dylan.

Also, with the scale of the build and the sheer volume of roofing material required for the multiple layers of roofing, having a workspace and a system that further minimised double-handling would have brought extra efficiencies to the project, says Tyson. “The team was constrained to build the roof in sections, as the structures were put in place by the builders.”

MEMBER PROJECT

Stunning medical centre project A multi-award winning medical centre and finalist in last year’s RANZ Roofing Awards was topped off by the team at Remarkable Roofing.

The MacMurray Medical Centre is a unique two-storey building for private endoscopy services in Remuera, Auckland. Designed by award-winning architects Warren and Mahoney and built by Argon Construction, sustainably sourced building materials and principles were specified and applied – from the western-red cedar through key design moves, such as the dramatic cantilevered canopy shading to the double-height glazed façade. A combination of long-run roofing and wall cladding beside some large black window shrouds and the timeless look of cedar and stainless steel made the finished project one that all parties were incredibly proud of being involved in.

Remarkable Roofing, the roofing contractor on the build, says that the MacMurray Medical Centre was a great project to be involved in, and the team at Argon were definitely people they would be happy to work with on future projects.

The roof is Dimond DD300 on a full cavity and underlay system, with a variance to the wall cladding on the north and west facades in Dimond’s Eurotray Angle Seam on Proclima Solitude UM, with the increasingly popular seamed tray look.

Area: total roof and cladding installed 1600m2.

Height of safety Mason Fisher, RANZ Health and Safety Committee Chair, gives an update on new legislation surrounding working at height.

I know everyone has a lot going on at present, but I thought I would give members a heads up and some information on changes that are relevant to our industry, businesses and safety regarding the Health and Safety at Work Reform Act – in particular mitigating the risks of working at height. I have also included some useful links at the end of this article.

Working at height is common to many workplaces but is far more widespread in commercial and residential construction – particularly the roofing sector. Falls from height are most common in the construction

sector, occurring at three times the rate of the manufacturing sector.

Jenny Maxwell and Graham Moor have done a lot of work on this topic and provided consultation feedback during these new changes’ primary public consultation process back in 2019 and 2020. On the 24th of September 2021, the Government Cabinet Economic Development Committee released their ‘Minute of Decision of Policy’, with decisions passed. I have endeavoured to pull the core information relating to our industry to give members an idea of what is brewing in the background.

The proposed regulations will layer controls according to risk

Overview of changes The changes will update, clarify and simplify the existing working at height requirements to be more flexible to the circumstances and proportionate to the risk.

• Businesses must apply the Prescribed Risk Management Process to all ‘work at height’ to ensure that these risks are managed in a consistent, proportionate way. This new approach will remove the current exemptions for work at heights below three metres and in agriculture to ensure consistent and proportionate protection.

• Businesses will be required to follow a hierarchy of controls for construction work.

This means applying a step-by-step process, in descending order, from a higher level of protection to a lower level, starting from providing a safe working platform, moving to a fall prevention system, and finally, a fall arrest system. A combination of controls may also be used, if appropriate. To accommodate low-risk, minor work, such as clearing out a gutter, work from a ladder is permitted in specified circumstances.

• The licensing and qualifications for scaffolding construction and inspection will be modernised to reflect current industry practice. The detail of the high-risk work licensing process for scaffolders will be consulted on as part of the early draft of the regulations.

PRESS RELEASE: 24 September 2021 Government announces changes to Health and Safety at Work Regulations.

The Government has announced changes to the health and safety regulations, providing more clarity and certainty for businesses and enabling better safety and health for workers.

The regulation changes are not about creating cumbersome new requirements; it’s about ensuring better regulations that keep workers safe. In the last decade, an average of 54 people died at work each year from injuries involving plant (such as workplace machinery, vehicles and equipment) and structures (such as scaffolding and excavations).

The existing requirements are outdated and full of gaps.

They are being modernised to ensure they are clear, effective, proportionate and durable. By updating the regulations, businesses are supported to better manage the risks in their workplaces and reduce work-related harm and fatalities.

Businesses and workers provided a wide range of feedback and views during the public consultation process. It was overwhelmingly clear that many people believe our existing requirements are no longer fit-for-purpose.

Businesses and workers support clear, modernised regulations to improve workplace practices.

Reforming the health and safety regulations is part of the work to address the issues identified by both the Royal Commission on the Pike River Coal Mine Tragedy and the Independent Taskforce on Workplace Health and Safety.

An early draft of the proposed regulations will be released in early 2022 for further feedback and to test the detail. The changes are expected to come into force in late 2022.

Welcome to RoofLink, Jennie and Neil. Congratulations on winning Training Company of the Year – not for the first time – and thanks for agreeing to share some of your insights into training, which we hope will help inspire and motivate fellow members to ‘grow the pie’ of NZ’s roofing talent pool.

Q What motivates you to invest in taking on new apprentices as a company?

A We’ve been taking on apprentices for 35 years now – it’s something we’ve always done. Our future and the industry depends on it at this time. There’s a limited pool of experienced roofers available in New Zealand, so we in our industry need to look at how we can turn semi-skilled workers into good roofers. At Topline, we look for people with aptitude and the right attitude – their motivation has to be 100%.

It’s a great feeling to see these people succeed from being unskilled labourers to highly skilled tradesmen and women. As a team, we also enjoy mentoring and seeing people succeed. We get huge satisfaction in seeing their development, along with the opportunity it gives them to succeed in life.

Q What do you see as benefits to the broader team of having apprentices on board?

A

We have a highly competent and experienced roofing team, and they’re happy and willing to pass on their knowledge and skills to enthusiastic apprentices. It’s all part of the broader picture of supporting our industry and keeping our skills alive and relevant. We know that there are industries out there that have lost a lot of those skills.

Including career pathways, training, and mentoring brings the team together, providing a positive culture and respect. It also makes the experienced team members check themselves in technique when passing on information, so it helps keep everyone up to date and relevant.

Our experienced team members enjoy the mentoring system and get a lot of satisfaction in seeing their less experienced team members develop. So it’s a really great payback for everyone and helps foster a positive environment. The learning environment also encourages open communication, which has many other team benefits.

There is a considerable investment to balance that’s associated with training a new recruit. It costs a lot of money, and the ‘greener’ they are initially, the more the investment, with a lot of unchargable time incurred and having to hold experienced roofers back to help train them.

With some projects needing just to get done, keeping up on-site training of apprentices is a real juggle and can mean incurring costs and overruns on some jobs. You, therefore, need to be careful about placing apprentices on appropriate jobs – that’s what counts. There are times when they need to stand back and watch, do the site tidy-ups, and do the hard work that all apprentices have to go through.

Q What do you think is essential to keep trainees engaged and committed long term to their career in roofing?

A You need positive role models and leaders, people they can go to for advice and help. They need feedback on progress – that’s really important, and they need recognition for doing well – small achievements count. Consistent messaging is essential –stick to the plan, show the importance of working as a team, and provide excellent team communication.

Q What do you think makes for a good on-site learning environment?

A Positive teamwork and a positive learning culture. Learning is also a lot more achievable when you enjoy the people you work with; also, maintaining high work standards for quality, health-and-safety and paperwork means that all team members know the expectations for the company as a whole.

You need to get the priorities right, and health and safety is your first priority. Providing a safe work environment makes people feel secure, putting them in a better position to learn. And also, allowing all people the right to have a say in an inclusive environment is fundamental.

There’s another side to this equation. The success of the trainee is also dependent on the effort they put into their role. The team doesn’t accept unexplained absenteeism, lateness or slack work effort. The team will eventually weed people out if these behaviours show up.

Q Tell us about some of your apprentice success stories?

A

Having been in business for over 35 years, we’ve had many successful apprentices, along with many award-winners across our plumbing, gas-fitting and roofing apprentices. Some of these successful roofers have moved on to start their own contracting businesses – that’s just something you have to accept. Hopefully, they’ve put in a reasonable amount of time with you before that happens, and we often maintain good links with those people, which is great.

We’ve also had several of these people return to the company to take leadership positions. We’ve had others remain in the company for long periods, gradually rising through the company to take on specialist or leadership roles. There are great opportunities within the company as a leading hand or in supervisory or project management roles; otherwise, pricing or sales, so there are lots of areas to progress in our business.

Q Two members of the RANZ Executive are currently tutors for

some of the Roofing Certificate block courses. They’ve been adding some more practical industry learning, which was an area they identified as in need of development. How have you found the Roofing Certification programme, as employers, and from feedback from your apprentice trainees?

Q What would you like to see in future roofing certification development?

A If it were to be separated into residential and commercial, it could seem disjointed, so adding some commercial coverage within the existing course could be great.

Perhaps there could be an additional module at the end for the benefit of experienced roofers and also give a glimpse of advanced roofing.

This could include plan-reading, team work, work plans, timelines and communication skills. This could offer an eye-opener and appreciation of what bosses do and what the whole business is about for all levels.

Q What other advice would you give roofing employers looking to set up a good training culture?

A First and foremost, you need to have a positive company culture, which includes robust dialogue and feedback from the team. Also, make sure that you have suitable staff who are open to training and mentoring prospective roofers to succeed.

Many positives come with training. For example, we’ve had parents come in and personally thank you for the difference the apprenticeship has made to their child's life. Those moments come out of the blue and are moving and fulfilling.

A We’ve had mixed reviews. A couple of experienced roofers said they felt there wasn’t much in there for them. The inexperienced roofers found it really helpful and that it was crammed full of information, both in the theory and block course. It was noted that there wasn’t a lot of contact from block course tutors after the block course and that the content was geared to residential, not commercial areas.

Injury time Soft tissue injuries are potentially the most serious threat to a roofer’s career. A gettogether at CS Roofing back in November addressed some of the biggest culprits – and possible solutions.

What do you get when you put nine roofers, an ergonomist and a couple of boxes of beer in a room at 4pm on a Monday? Possibly, the first workshop of its kind in New Zealand. The workshop, held at CS Roofing Canterbury in November, focused on the significant issue of strains and sprains in the roofing industry. So prevalent is the problem that the roofers from CS Roofing didn’t have to be lured to the workshop by the promise of a cold beer. In fact, when participants were asked whether sore shoulders, lower backs or wrists were an issue, many hands went up.

Paul Stanley-Boden, Vice President of the Roofing Association of New Zealand, spoke at the workshop, representing the membrane side of roofing. According to reports, he said, the risks of strains and sprains have not reduced over time – they may be getting worse.

Paul noted how membrane rolls have become heavier in recent times, up to 135kg a roll.

Compounding the issue of heavier materials is that residential sites often don’t have mechanical means of getting materials onto the roof, which leaves roofers with no other option than to snake up through scaffolding with the roll on their shoulders. Paul said that it’s been this way for his entire career and asked how the industry could quickly develop solutions. “There seems to be a real opportunity to make it easier for roofers and all trades if project and site planning includes

all the trades that are working there,” he said.

One potential fix is having stairs, rather than scaffold hatches, for access, allowing workers to easily retrieve a 45kg roll of Butynol when needed. Many solutions depend on the site project manager and the decisions made during the quoting and planning phases of the job. During these stages, roofers have the opportunity to plan how and where they will set up on-site, as well as how materials will be moved. With careful planning, it’s possible to reduce the need for double handling and reduce the distance materials need to be moved.

At the workshop, participants were asked to comment on what contributed to the pain they were experiencing. There was no shortage of factors raised by the group, including: • The fully stooped-over working position, while potentially harmful, is efficient and feels comfortable to the roofer while working. It doesn’t seem to cause problems in the short term, but over a long period of time, it places a tremendous amount of stress on the lower spine. Until we can invent a stand-up, collated roofing screw gun, resorting to this working position is the only option.

However, in the future, the group will be trialling a back exoskeleton that supports the legs and lower back when working on tasks like screwing off.

• Tool belts are bloody heavy! Roofers› tool belts are among some of the heaviest in the trades. Many roofers have moved to using shoulder braces to support the weight of their belt, and some have stopped wearing their belts altogether.

Magnetic tool vests that distribute the weight of the tools evenly across a roofer’s chest exist, and participants were keen to trial these to see if they’d be helpful.

• Roofers are getting older, but it’s rare to see roofers over 50 still on the tools.

While many roofers invest time after work to exercise and recuperate so they can keep working for longer, more needs to be done to prolong roofers’ careers. Back pain prevention and management will be crucial.

• Hand tools are used extensively throughout roofing work. The industry needs to share knowledge on which tools are practical, how to use them correctly, and how to maintain them. For example, there are many different tools for turning up, yet roofers often resort to using the same old, or wrong ones, placing undue stress on their wrists.

A big takeaway and a highlight for those who attended was that pain and injury don’t have to be just part of a roofer’s job. There’s a lot that can be done to prevent and manage injury if roofers put their collective minds together.

Top ten tips for reducing injuries – from roofers, for roofers 1. Avoid working in a stooped position for long periods of time (eg, more than 10% of your shift). Use other kneeling and squatting positions to give you variety.

2. Wear kneepads to give you the option of kneeling while working. Pads protect your knees at the same time.

3. Take regular breaks. Especially if you need to work in stooped positions. Rest, stretch and straighten up. Keep your hamstrings flexible with stretches.

4. Get work up of the ground wherever you can. Use a table to store gear on, a step ladder or the back of the truck to raise your work surface and reduce the amount of bending you’re doing throughout the day overall. This will help protect your lower back over your working career.

In 2020, 653 roofers made a claim with the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) and took a combined total of 21,000 days off work that year because of strains and sprains.

Most injuries were in the lower back, with shoulders and wrists a close second and third.

CHASNZ is working with RANZ and the industry to develop a programme to address strains and sprains in roofing.

5. Choose good tools such as snips and consider using a normal drill instead of an impact drill for screwing down. Impact drills require ear protection and more stooping.

6. Consider using long-handled crowbars. They keep you working in an upright position when stripping roofs.

7. Lighten your tool belt. Change the contents of your tool belt to match the task you’re doing and keep your main supply of tools nearby. Distribute the weight on the belt evenly and consider using braces if it’s heavy.

8. Stay hydrated while working. Keep a water supply in your toolkit. Your pee should be light yellow!

9. Consider giving up smoking. Smoking contributes to the development of back pain problems. Vaping may help you quit.

10. Stretch. To combat all that bending, try frequent lumbar extension. You can do this by standing and arching backwards, or by leaning forward on a wall with your arms on the wall, then dropping your hips towards the wall.

ROOF REPORTING

A cautionary tale The pros and considerable cons of providing a client with a written roof report.

A quick survey of the Roofing Association public pages shows that only a small handful of members offer roof reports. This would indicate that report-writing is not a significant income stream for most roofing companies.

However, we believe that many roofers do produce reports, perhaps as an occasional filler or lead to work. So, we thought a quick overview of the pros and cons of roof reporting might be topical.

your field. Insurers, banks, courts take your words extremely seriously and often make decisions and commit large sums of money based on those (your) words. So, if you are imprecise, vague or wrong, you can expect to be held to account.

Reports are, metaphorically speaking, a lot like icebergs. Pretty simple on the surface, but lots going on down below. And, to get doubly metaphorical, you do not want a simple little report sinking your ship.

2) Mitigate as much liability as you possibly can

To be clear, this is not a ‘how-to guide’; it’s probably closer to being a ‘how-not-to guide’… but much more like a ‘why-wouldyou guide’!

On the face of it, writing reports may seem like easy money. An experienced roofer can, in a few hours, get a good handle on the state of a roof, take a few photos, write a page or so on their observations and pocket a few hundred dollars. So, what could possibly go wrong?

Well, actually, a lot can go horribly wrong because the previous paragraph has only dealt with the visible piece of the iceberg.

Liability By far, the most significant piece of the iceberg lurking out of sight is liability. A report is not simply your throwaway opinion, take it or leave it, all care, no responsibility, etc. You are a roofer – a trusted professional.

If you choose to do roof reporting, you have two primary goals: 1) Deliver a fair, factual and accurate report

Delivering a fair, factual and accurate report is not as easy as it sounds. To do it well requires good objective problem solving and some writing skills. Fortunately, that is not the point of this article as I am not an English language academic, and most people would stop reading about now if it was.

Mitigating liability is straightforward. You do this by declining to provide reports or opinion. Many trade associations discourage their members from reporting. This advice has come about due to numerous cases where the tradesperson (often a builder) has been dragged through the courts (and bankruptcy) on the back of a pre-purchase report that missed something expensive. It is also important to appreciate that your standard Public Liability insurance does not cover the liability you may face from providing a roofing report.

It is worth bearing in mind, here, that you may be taken to task by an insurer, bank or other corporate than by the homeowner. The liability you could face from a report could occur many years down the track, and the

amount claimed against you could significantly exceed what you may reasonably expect from providing such a report.

Claimants, such as insurers and banks, have deep pockets and well-resourced legal teams. The costs associated with defending claims can often be as significant as the alleged loss itself.

This is not a good thing as the amount of money such corporates seek is much greater than the property’s value in question.

However, Austinsure insurance professionals feel that any claim will likely come from the property owner (not an institution). With some inspections, a hazard (e.g. faulty electrical system) that is not identified could give rise to an insurance claim – hence the risk the insurer knocks on your door. A roof report is generally not a hazard identification and typically would only be requested by the property owner. So, while likely, it is not always the case.

Mark Holland, Partner at Hazelton Law, cautions that various elements of the law come into play here. These include the Fair Trading Act, Consumer Guarantees Act, contract law and the law of negligence (duty of care).

The person that carries out and prepares a report may owe a personal duty of care in addition to the obligations in contract (for example) their company owes. The starting point in how long a person or company can be sued for a deficient or negligent report is six years from when the report was prepared.

Next, if the problem(s) not identified in a deficient or negligent report only become apparent (often called reasonably discoverable) after the initial six-year period, the person or company can be sued within three years after the problems were reasonably discoverable. However, there is an absolute time-bar in the Limitation Act of 15 years from when the report was prepared.

Yes, 15 years!

Importantly, matters such as whether you have been paid for preparing a report are not relevant for whether a duty of care may exist or not. Many unfortunate stories start with the words, ‘I was just doing them a favour…’.

So, you’re still keen to write a report?

You may have decided that the ‘decline’ strategy is not for you, and you still wish to boldly go where even James T. Kirk would hesitate. If this is the case, the following is an incomplete list of things that I do, and you could do, to reduce or mitigate against liability.

The list is incomplete because there is no shortage of traps and pitfalls out there, so you must prepare well and seek advice widely.

• Professional Indemnity Insurance cover: A policy of this nature can help defend you against a claim. It is not a silver bullet, as you must still perform the reporting task to a very high standard. Such policies are also getting increasingly expensive (and difficult to obtain). This is a direct result of an increasing number of costly claims that insurers are dealing with. In particular, reports associated with leaky buildings are not covered, which, for roof reporting, could be significant.

• A contract: Always have a contract in place with your client. The contract will typically identify the scope, the fee and the term. More importantly, it should define the limit and term of your liability.

One of the more ‘generous’ liability limits I have seen was set at ten times the contract fee. It is recommended that you seek professional help to develop the contract. That said, a contract cannot impose a liability limit on a claim under the Consumer Guarantees Act.

• Be selective: Pre-purchase or leaky building reports are highly risky, require significant resources, and are potentially uninsurable. Damage reports (weather, earthquake, pets, contractors, etc.) are often very specific and usually more clear cut.

•

he report format: How you set out your T report can be critical to the outcome of a claim against you. Again, professional help is recommended to develop a template that covers critical aspects of liability mitigation, including but not limited to such things as: • The scope: What components of the roof are included and what is not. What aspect of the problem are you reporting on (earthquake damage, a weather event, etc.). Are there other possible factors that need to be ‘tagged’ out of the scope?

• T he intended audience: Limit the use of the information you are providing by identifying who can (or cannot) see or use the information and for what purpose.

• The methodology: What tools did you use (or not use) to establish your findings? For example, external inspection, infra-red scans, flood testing, destructive testing.

• Disclaimers: Any and all things that you can legitimately remove from a potential claim against you.

• Deal in facts: State what you can prove or see and do not speculate on what you cannot.

• The language: Definitive or absolute terms are rarely provable beyond doubt. To state that the ‘roof is in good condition’ is subjective and could be wrong. To state that a ‘roof appears to be in good condition for its age’ is still subjective and possibly inaccurate, but it is much less absolute and, hence, slightly more defendable.

• Finger-pointing is another area that can be subjective. Without solid proof

that ‘X caused Y because Z didn’t…’ is likely to be contestable and possibly defamatory. Your job is to report facts, not to speculate or make judgements.

• Recommendations: As the expert, you are expected to know that damage can lead to more damage, so it may be advisable to suggest that steps should be taken to rectify any issues as soon as possible, but without going into how or why.

• Conflicts of interest: These can have the potential to undermine your credibility. Do you know any of the parties involved, for example, the roofer, builder or homeowner? How you deal with a conflict can impact your impartiality and, ultimately, your liability.

The other aspect is to avoid supplying a quote for any remedial work. This could be interpreted as self-serving. The opportunity to quote will probably arise later in proceedings anyway.

• The cost: Good, sound reporting does not come cheap. When the pro-rata price of your Professional Indemnity cover, set up costs for contract and report templates, provision for claims, etc., are calculated out, you’re looking at a lot more than a simple time-and-materials calculation. If this figure is calculated realistically, you begin to feel the gravity of the work you are entering into.

In conclusion Roof reports have always been seen as a side activity that can generate a bit of income on a quiet day. Times have changed. There are more leaky buildings, more litigation, and more risk – much more risk.

Austinsure’s Blair Dyer cautions roofers that, due to the risks and costs detailed above, report writing should not be done on an ‘ad hoc’ basis. Even one report could expose the author [of the report] to the significant liability highlighted above. As a roofer, you might want to question whether your knowledge is better used to keep buildings dry rather than writing about why they are not.

Purlin creasing and timber shrinkage Although not an exact science with a definitive solution, measures can be taken to avoid ugly issues down the track.

In many ways, purlin creasing is similar to ‘canning’ but occurs at specific intervals concurrent with the purlin lines. As with canning, some coils will develop different embedded stress patterns to others and will be more likely to exhibit purlin creasing. However, purlin creasing is nearly always there, especially with more common, wide-panned profiles, such as a typical five-rib trapezoidal and many trough sections. The good news is that the creasing will be discrete in most cases and go unnoticed. In others, however, the client will find it offensive.

Light has a considerable part to play when it comes to the visibility of purlin creasing. On one occasion last year, I went to a site out of Hastings to inspect a purlin creasing complaint. It was virtually unnoticeable, even when pointed out. However, while we discussed why we had gone so far to see nothing, the light changed slightly, and the creasing suddenly became extremely obvious.

Another common factor, which comes as no surprise, is the line of sight.

When a roof is aligned so that the eye looks at it from an acute angle, purlin creasing will be a lot more evident.

As I have already mentioned, purlin creasing is nearly always present, to some extent. So what can be done to mitigate It? • First and foremost, forewarn your customer. Let them know that if their roof is highly visible from the ground and has a wide-pan profile, some purlin creasing is likely.

• If a roof is visible from the ground, or a client is sensitive to purlin creasing, recommend a narrower pan or a corrugate profile.

• Minimise foot traffic. If other trades are accessing a roof, or accessing different sections of the roof, install temporary walkways.

• Thicker material (0.55mm) is much less prone to purlin creasing than 0.40mm material. However, it is still vulnerable.

• Recommend a low gloss or matt colour finish.

• Check the support structure is straight. Roofing laid over convexshaped rafters will put pans into compression and accentuate purlin creasing.

• Purlins sitting high on rafters will also cause creasing. Sometimes, a purlin will ride up on the fixing screw and not sit tight against the rafter. Check before installation.

• Do not over-tighten fasteners.

Timber shrinkage Is purlin creasing related to timber shrinkage? I have no evidence to prove this, but in theory, if a rafter or top chord of a truss shrinks while drying, it would put the roof into compression. Radiata typically shrinks longitudinally by 1%, meaning a 5.0m rafter could shrink by up to 5mm, which is enough movement to cause compression in the profile.

However, on two jobs I have been involved in, releasing the screws did not cure the purlin creasing, so on those jobs, timber shrinkage is unlikely to be the root cause.

There is also the practicality of waiting for trusses to dry before installing the roof. Realistically, that just isn’t going to happen.

Compression timber A bigger problem with timber shrinkage is compression timber in purlins. Compression timber occurs sporadically and can cause up to 1% shrinkage – or 24mm over 2.4 metres. That amount of movement will make ridges and other transverse flashings buckle like a concertina.

This problem seems to occur in waves. It appears that some forestry blocks are more prone to ‘compression’ wood than others, so we often see outbreaks of it in a development where houses are built at the same time with timber from the same source.

Thermal movement Compression is noticeably different to thermal movement. Firstly, it is likely to occur dramatically in specific parts of the flashing, not over the whole length, because that is how compression wood behaves.

Secondly, it will be just as bad on a cold day as a hot one.

The solution is not to fasten transverse flashings until the moisture content is below 12%. The Code of Practice used to quote 18% for this, but at 18% radiata has only just begun to shrink in earnest, so 12% is a lot closer to the equilibrium state.

I fully understand that this may not be convenient to achieve in practice, but the only alternative is to take the risk. If it occurs, there is no point in approaching your supplier for a solution – the problem is not with the steel.

Where are they now?

A new award that celebrates up-and-coming talent, plus a look back on the progress three past apprentices have made in their roofing careers.

Recent roofing projects of Jared Balvers, winner of the inaugural RANZ Young Roofer Excellence Award 2021.

Recognising talent in younger roofing recruits has led to the creation of a new award to ensure the efforts of these promising young leaders are recognised. They are, after all, the future of this industry. The new RANZ Young Roofer Excellence Award is aimed at the next generation of roofing leadership coming through (under 25's) and will complement the existing Trainee of the Year Award and supreme RANZ Award, the Roofing Excellence Award, which celebrates roofers who are further along in their careers.

A standout achievement for RANZ has been its commitment to industry training through various initiatives to achieve the NZQA qualification of the National Certificate in Roofing, establishing a learning foundation for roofing skill development. The value of competency-based training has led to many successful sign-ups since the training programme was first introduced and then further enhanced, with many younger candidates now being attracted to this specialist trade.

With a clear pathway for new and existing roofers to forge ahead with an enduring career, it is worth noting how qualification has enabled previous apprentices to thrive and prosper in this industry and sometimes move into other related roles.

High achievers Celebrating the achievement of young roofers, the association last year named

Adam Godsall of Project Unite Ltd the Trainee of the Year, and Jared Balvers of CS Roofing Canterbury became the inaugural winner of the new award – the Young Roofer Excellence Award.

Jared is currently a leading hand with CS Roofing Canterbury, working towards becoming a foreman, having overcome several challenges during his apprenticeship tenure. At age 17, he had surgery for Carpal Tunnel in both hands; this was in 2018 when he was 20. At the time, Jared worked as an apprentice commercial roofer but could not continue employment.

Roofing was what he’d set his heart on, so two years later, CS engaged him. Working mainly with tray, and under the guidance of top installers to minimise the physical impact on his hands, he completed rehabilitation. His employer says Jared has quickly adapted his skills and has acquired his National Certificate in Roofing. His strengths include his attention to detail and his preciseness with using trigonometry to set out installations accurately. Jared can think ahead, use his initiative, and work independently without direct supervision. All great qualities for a debutante roofing apprentice.

Where are they now?

We tracked down previous candidates for National Certificate in Roofing to discover where and how their roofing journey has progressed.

Lucas Pope Some years back, Lucas Pope and Lennon Gavan were novice roofing apprentices but have now forged into meaningful new roles.

Lucas left school at 16 and joined Natural Roofing Products, learning to install some of the more unusual materials, such as slate tiles, clay tiles and cedar shingles. His job took him to many parts of New Zealand to create roofing on some exceptional homes. Lucas was always keen to qualify and gained his National Certificate in shingle and slate roofing, clay roof tiles and roof membranes.

After 11 years with Natural Roofing Products, Lucas, now aged 33, is Business Manager for Total Property Workz, Auckland, but credits the longevity of his career to his roofing qualification and the mentoring from his RANZ member employer, Brian Pudney. “He taught me to be a good operator,” he says. continued on page 41 Issue 100 • Autumn 2022

In 2013 Lennon Gavan was runner up for a Top Roofing Trainee of the Year award as an employee of CS Roofing Southland. Lennon was employed directly from leaving Southland Boys High at the end of Year 12. A talented rugby player, Lennon’s athleticism enabled him to move easily around a roof, which became apparent right from the start of his apprenticeship.

Mark Pretty spent many years learning the roofing trade under the watchful eyes of his father, whose two companies, Pretty Brick & Tile and Pretty Fascia & Spouting, ensured Mark learned many of the tools and practices required to succeed as a roofer. Along the way, he also acquired the National Certificate in Concrete Tiles.

Achieving National Certificate enhanced Lennon’s ability to analyse the specific detailing required on a job. “Every job is unique with its own methodology, and this has become even more important now as there’s always more than one way of solving a problem,” he says.

When Lennon’s partner relocated to Wellington in her role as a nurse, Lennon worked for Tararua Roofing, returning in 2016 to CS Roofing Southland. Soon after, he established his own contracting company, Gavan Roofing, and is now a key subcontractor to the company that gave him his first taste of roofing.

Over several years, working for Golden Homes and Platinum Homes, Mark suffered two significant back injuries – one in the workplace followed by another in a snowboarding accident, which rendered him off the tools and into a supervisory role. Ten years ago, he joined Metalcraft Roofing and supportive of his bid to gain further qualifications, Mark added Metal Tiles and Metal Roof and Wall Cladding to his National Certificate portfolio, completing a two-day module course at the Metalcraft Training Centre in Rotorua.

Mark, now aged 40, is currently the contracts manager for Metalcraft Roofing at Hobsonville, emphasising the importance of acquiring a National Certificate. Having not obtained any meaningful qualifications from his school years, Mark was always good with his hands and now has recognition for what he has achieved by taking up training and taking up even more qualifications to expand his roofing career.

Driving change Well-established hybrid vehicle supplier Toyota offer their insight into current and future developments for the market and the fleet needs of roofers.

With well over 80% of the electricity used in New Zealand generated from renewable energy sources – and with a Government goal of having 100% renewable energy by 2030 – it’s reasonable and logical from an environmental standpoint to drive an electric vehicle (EV), more so than in most other countries around the world.

Over the next few years, as legislation changes accelerate the electric vehicle rollout in New Zealand, the choice of vehicles on offer for Kiwis will expand, and the vehicles on our roads will change – and this will include trade vehicles. With this in mind, we spoke with Toyota, one of the electric vehicle (EV) technology leaders.

Toyota’s electrification journey started 20 years ago, with the Prius pioneering hybrid electric vehicle technology. Fast forward to today, and the company offer hybrids across most of their range – even in SUVs, such as the Highlander and RAV4. Unlike earlier Hybrid models, these SUVs now better suit the kiwi lifestyle – they can tow, they look the part, they save you money at the pump and are lighter on emissions.

As electrification becomes more mainstream, so do the options, and Toyota plans to leave no

customer behind on its electrification journey.

Our source tells us that they will continue to offer vehicles to meet the needs of all Kiwis, including light commercial vehicles for essential services and trades, such as roofers.

Overall, Toyota New Zealand has achieved a 17% emissions reduction* from its fleet in the past five years – one of the highest in the industry, and something they say they are incredibly proud of.

The New Zealand light vehicle market is one of the most unique globally. As a nation, we import over 300,000 vehicles into the country each year – half are new, and half are used.

This confirms the scale of the needs of New Zealanders all around the country and means there is no one silver bullet when it comes to reducing emissions and the pathway to electrification.

Toyota believes we need to focus on a broad range of technologies and ownership or utilisation options to lower transport industry emissions, and this will incorporate hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), Plug-in Hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), battery electric vehicles (BEVs), hydrogen for commercial applications and mobility as a service via car sharing as well.

We have the opportunity for New Zealand to be technology leaders, not just technology takers, but to support this, we need stable, predictable government policy, which allows us to work with suppliers to secure suitable transport solutions for all kiwi mobility needs.

What does this mean for Toyota New Zealand and the vehicles they offer?

Toyota says that the model line-up will evolve over the next few years as they look to balance the new regulatory requirements and the needs of their customers seeking differing powertrain solutions with lower emission options. This will include the transport needs for our valuable essential industry, rural and trade customers.

At the end of last year, Akio Toyoda, the global Toyota President, revealed 30 new electric vehicle models will be available globally by 2030. These include a mix of hybrid electric and battery electric. This vehicle line-up includes sub-compact hatches, sedans, SUVs, high-performance sports cars, a ute and a bus. New batteryelectric and hybrid-electric models are on the horizon, but they won’t be here overnight.

Go soft to stay strong Workplace wellbeing is more than just putting on a hard hat.

When you’re in the trades, haumaru (safe) work is at the forefront of everyone’s mind.

But increasingly, employers, unions and industry specialists recognise safety isn’t just about wearing a hard hat or making sure you’re roped in when you’re working at heights. It’s about mental health, and they want the folks on the tools to recognise the importance of their own wellbeing. As New Zealand copes with Omicron and starts to open up to overseas visitors, anxiety seems to be peaking, and it is important that you’re able to manage it – or know where to get help if you can’t.

The right tools for the job You might think that all this chatter about emotional health means people are going soft, but if that is what it takes to keep the workforce strong, then we’re all for it. We all need the right tools to do our jobs, and your mental health toolbox is just as important as the one full of hammers and nails when it comes to keeping you and your mahi (work) mates safe.

A study undertaken at the start of the pandemic in 2020 by Elizabeth Broadbent at Auckland University reported that 64% of participants showed signs of depression and 53% anxiety symptoms. These results were significantly higher than usual, indicating the pandemic was affecting even in those early days. Now, almost two years on, around 40% of US adults report depression symptoms – a rise from 10% in 2019. In the UK, one in six adults reported symptoms of anxiety and/or depression in 2021, up from one in ten before the pandemic.

If you are feeling depressed, anxious or unhappy, you’re less likely to work safely efficiently or enjoy life outside of work. It’s been a difficult few years, and there is no shame in admitting you might not be functioning at 100% in the mental and emotional health departments – because you aren’t alone.

In May 2021, the team at Skills Consulting Group published our Work Wellbeing Index.

This showed that the overall wellbeing score for tradespeople was just 55 out of 100. Yet 63% of employees surveyed said they wanted to feel looked after at work, with 67% of people surveyed saying it was important their co-workers had their back. The results showed that people who are happy at work are 49% happier in general. So, you can see how vital mental health really is.

We know that the uncertainty around COVID-19 is having a considerable effect, and one of the most significant issues is finding trusted sources of information. In 2021, a study by European sociologists found a direct link between misinformation and depression.

In short, those memes your mates are sharing, those YouTube videos about protests, the ‘he said she said’ chatter in that WhatsApp group – it is all affecting your mental wellbeing. If you have questions or concerns about COVID-19, your safety in the workplace, vaccinations or what will happen if you fall ill, you need to go straight to a trusted source to get your answers.

Mahi Haumaru Aotearoa (Work Safe New Zealand) has many great resources relating to COVID-19 concerns. Whether you’re wondering if you and your team need to be vaccinated, or you’re wondering what your rights are if you get sick, they have an extensive selection of articles offering some of the answers.

The Government has a dedicated COVID-19 website where you can get up-to-date statistics, find out how to self-isolate effectively if you have symptoms, or when you can visit your family in Australia or the Pacific Islands again.

Your mental health toolbox It’s okay not to feel okay, but you might not even know how anxiety, stress, depression or general worry feels. You might just have a sense that things aren’t quite right. Here are a few symptoms that might indicate you need a wellbeing WOF:

• Muscular pain and headaches • Jaw clenching, sometimes at night, causing jaw pain • Trouble sleeping • Needing a beer to unwind • Always thinking about worries

• Feeling tired, or not feeling hungry The scariest thing about not feeling okay is not knowing what to do next. That is where a wellbeing or mental health kete (basket) comes in. We’ve put together some suggestions here for things you can do to improve your mental wellbeing and where you can get help if you need it.

• Take each day as it comes: Don’t panic over extensive to-do lists, worrying about the future. Just focus on the day ahead and focus on the now while you are living your day. This is called mindfulness, and it is proven to be successful.

• Be grateful: Gratitude is scientifically proven to help with happiness. Find small things to be thankful for can improve your wellbeing. Set yourself a challenge to be grateful for one thing every day – whether it’s that you’ve got tomato sauce for your pie, or your tama (son) did a drawing of you at school, take a moment to appreciate these wins.

• Keep yourself connected: Spend time with family or have dinner with your housemates. Keeping up connection with others is an essential way to fight depression. Preventing isolation is key.

Live alone? Make use of Zoom or arrange to have a cup of tea with a neighbour. Try and spend time with your team socially at work, during your lunch break or smoko.

• Ask yourself if you can think differently: Can you take that worry and reframe it?

Instead of, “Can I see my mates?” ask

yourself, “How can I catch up with my buddies at the weekend?”. Take action and plan rather than feeling trapped by the situation. Take back control.

• Accept the way you feel: This is pretty hard, but accepting it is okay to feel the way you do can sometimes be helpful. This is especially true if you are worried you are drinking too much alcohol or being too angry with your whanāu (family). Breathe slowly, roll your shoulders gently to relieve tension – and take a break. It’s okay.

• Do something you love: Belt out that waiata (song), play the guitar, kick a football around the garden, play with your cat. Don’t let worry stop you from doing everyday, enjoyable things.

Tradies are a good bunch, and roofers especially tend to run a tight ship. You’re probably already checking in on your colleagues, apprentices and labourers regularly. But we’ve put together some tips to support you.

Signs your mates might not be fine: • More withdrawn than usual, not laughing and joking with the crew

• At work, check they are taking the proper practical steps to stay safe on site If you are really worried, then have a direct conversation. Tell your colleague or friend that you’ve noticed they are different, that you are concerned for their wellbeing.

Suggest some of the places they can get extra help. Speak to your line manager about how best the company can support them.

Things will be tricky for a while, but if we stick together, look out for each other, and are honest with ourselves, we can stay well.
