The paradox of isolation

Marta Ciołkowska è un’artista giovane e poliedrica, dal talento multiforme, che riesce a plasmare e a dominare una molteplicità di tecniche e di materiali, raggiungendo alti livelli di performance artistica da far invidia ai più veterani. La sua mente creativa è alla base di un percorso di ideazione, di progettazione e di realizzazione di opere, che potrebbero essere associate apparentemente ad un puro gioco intellettuale ma che, invece, sono il frutto di un’attenta riflessione esistenziale sulle esperienze vissute, rapportate ad una società in continuo divenire.

Si assiste, pertanto, alla genesi e costruzione attenta e particolareggiata di installazioni interattive, in grado di trasmettere messaggi provocatori e stranianti allo spettatore. Da una sfera a una mano, da un video ad un cubo, il viaggio si snoda tra le prigioni virtuali contemporanee. In un mondo ‘social’ dove apparentemente la connessione e la comunicazione sembrano gli aspetti dominanti, nasce l’ossimoro, il paradosso dell’isolamento, della solitudine, della mancanza di libertà e di autodeterminazione. Tutto sembra divertente, ma, in realtà, tutto si trasforma in una condizione di schiavitù e di dipendenza mentale e fisica, da cui non si può prescindere.

Il presente si distorce e la quotidianità si proietta in una dimensione fittizia dove la psiche rischia di essere completamente soggiogata, atterrita, annientata, in un processo inconsapevole, dove l’identità viene piano piano travolta e disintegrata.

La mostra, pertanto, diventa una presa di posizione, un’esortazione a spegnere, ad evadere da un mondo fittizio, che è causa molte volte di profondi malesseri e turbamenti. Ormai l’uomo è circondato, è immerso negli algoritmi, ma ciò non significa che debba costruire la sua vita in funzione di essi.

Pertanto, let’s take it offline!, la ribellione al Grande Fratello è ora, perché, come direbbe George Orwell, «in tempi di menzogna universale, dire la verità è un atto rivoluzionario».

Marta Ciołkowska is a young and multifaceted artist with a multifaceted talent who manages to shape and dominate a variety of techniques and materials, achieving high levels of artistic performance that would be the envy of most veterans. Her creative mind is the basis of a way of conceiving, designing and creating works, which could be associated with a pure intellectual game but which, instead, is the result of a careful existential reflection on lived experiences related to a constantly evolving society.

Therefore, we are witnessing the genesis, careful and detailed construction of interactive installations capable of transmitting provocative and alienating messages to the viewer. The journey winds its way through contemporary virtual prisons from a sphere to a hand, from a video to a cube. In a ‘social’ world where apparently connection and communication seem to be the dominant aspects, the oxymoron is born, the paradox of isolation, loneliness, lack of freedom and self-determination.

Everything seems funny, but, in reality, everything turns into a condition of slavery and mental and physical dependence, which cannot be ignored.

The present is distorted and everyday life is projected into a fictitious dimension where the psyche risks being completely subjugated, terrified, annihilated, in an unconscious process, where the identity is slowly overwhelmed and disintegrated.

The exhibition, therefore, becomes a stance, an exhortation to switch off, to escape from a fictitious world, which is often the cause of profound discomfort and disturbance. By now, man is surrounded, immersed in algorithms, but this does not mean that he has to build his life according to them.

Therefore, let’s take it offline !, the rebellion against Big Brother is now, because, as George Orwell would say, “in times of universal lies, telling the truth is a revolutionary act”.

SOCIAL SWARM. Filosofia dell’Homo Digitalis

mazione che si traduce in un’atrofia del pensiero e della facoltà di giudizio.

Con Future si visualizzano il legame e la dipendenza morbosa e ossessiva degli individui dai dispositivi elettronici, quasi fossero una protrusione della propria mano. Non a caso la stessa artista nella descrizione della sua opera fa riferimento anche alla nomofobia (NO Mobile Phone PhoBIA), ovvero alla paura sempre più dilagante nelle nuove generazioni di perdere o di essere privati della possibilità di utilizzare il proprio cellulare.

Social Time si concentra, invece, sulla dimensione temporale del nostro rapporto con la tecnologia, non solo per la sua creazione e fruizione, ma anche per la sua distruzione.

Infine, Social Trap getta una luce sull’isolamento indotto dalla costante connessione alla rete. La folla post 2000 diviene uno sciame digitale composto da individui isolati; la società, nella disgregazione del comune e nell’erosione del collettivo, si atomizza. Il narcisismo, l’egotismo e l’ostentazione ipertrofica dell’Io diventano le nuove manifestazioni del sé.

Marta Ciołkowska (Łódź, 1993) si può inserire a pieno titolo nella folta schiera dei nativi digitali, ovvero in quella generazione - così come definita nel 2001 dallo scrittore e studioso statunitense Mark Prensky - che è nata e cresciuta contestualmente alla diffusione delle nuove tecnologie informatiche, ed il suo lavoro risulta essere proprio il frutto di questo contesto storico-sociale, se non addirittura una reazione ad esso.

Attraverso le opere esposte presso la Galleria KōArt/Unconventional Place (CT) in occasione della mostra personale Let’s take it offline curata da Aurelia Nicolosi, l’artista, di origine polacca, propone un’interpretazione critica del rapporto patologico che lega, o forse dovremmo meglio dire collega, l’uomo contemporaneo ai vari devices e ai social network.

Già nel 1995 Ivan Goldberg propose, in forma provocatoria, di introdurre nel DSM (il Manuale Diagnostico Statistico dei disturbi mentali) una nuova sindrome denominata Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD), ovvero un disturbo legato alla dipendenza dalla rete telematica, e solo un anno dopo lo psicologo inglese David Lewis coniò il concetto di affaticamento informativo (IFS – Information Fatigue Syndrome), la patologia psichica causata da un eccesso di informazioni che determina una crescente paralisi della capacità di analisi, disturbi dell’attenzione, agitazione generalizzata…

SOCIAL SWARM. Philosophy of Homo Digitalis Marta Ciołkowska (Łódź, 1993) can fully fit into the large group of digital natives, that is to say in that generation - as defined in 2001 by the American writer and scholar Mark Prensky - which was born and raised together with the spread of new information technologies, and her work turns out to be precisely the result of this historical-social context, if not a reaction to it.

Through the works exhibited at the KōArt/Unconventional Place Gallery (CT) on the occasion of the solo exhibition Let’s take it offline curated by Aurelia Nicolosi, the Polish-born artist proposes a critical interpretation of the pathological relationship that binds, or we should better say connect, the contemporary man to various devices and social networks.

Already in 1995 Ivan Goldberg proposed, in a provocative form, to introduce in the DSM (the Statistical Diagnostic Manual of mental disorders) a new syndrome called Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD), that is a disorder linked to dependence on the telematic network, and only a year later the English psychologist David Lewis coined the concept of information fatigue (IFS - Information Fatigue Syndrome), the psychic pathology caused by an excess of information that determines a growing paralysis of the ability to analyze, attention disorders, generalized agitation ...

Dal 2017 Marta Ciołkowska attraverso la serie di opere: Social Toilet, Social Prison, Future, Social Time e Social Trap analizza l’homo digitalis1 - per dirla con il filosofo coreano Byung-Chul Han2 - e i suoi disordini.

Così in Social Toilet affronta la questione della privacy e denuncia come, nella società di oggi, ci sia una erosione del privato a favore di una esibizione pornografica dell’intimità: pubblico e privato si fondono e confondono in un tutt’uno indifferenziato.

Il video Social Prison, così come l’omonima scultura, traducono in metafora visiva la schiavitù imposta dal frastuono comunicativo prodotto dalla rete: ogni giorno siamo inondati da un eccesso di infor-

From 2017 Marta Ciołkowska through the series of works: Social Toilet, Social Prison, Future, Social Time and Social Trap analyzes the homo digitalis 1to quote the Korean philosopher Byung-Chul Han2 - and his disorders.

Thus in Social Toilet she tackles the issue of privacy and denounce how, in today’s society, there is an erosion of the private sector in favor of a pornographic display of intimacy: public and private merge into an undifferentiated whole.

The Social Prison video, as well as the sculpture of the same name, translate the slavery imposed by the communicative noise produced by the network into a visual metaphor: every day we are flooded with an excess of information that results in an atrophy of thought and the faculty of judgment.

With Future we visualize the bond and the morbid and obsessive dependence of individuals on electronic devices, as if they were a protrusion of their own hand. It is no coincidence that the artist herself in the description of her work also refers to nomophobia (NO Mobile Phone PhoBIA), that is to the increasingly rampant fear in the new generations of losing or being deprived of the possibility of using their mobile phone.

Social Time, on the other hand, focuses on the temporal dimension of our relationship with technology, not only for its creation and use, but also for its destruction.

Finally, Social Trap sheds light on the isolation induced by constant connection to the network.

The post-2000 crowd becomes a digital swarm of isolated individuals. Society, in the disintegration of the common and the erosion of the collective, is atomized. Narcissism, egotism and hypertrophic ostentation of the ego become the new manifestations of the self.

2017 Come appare la vita dell’uomo moderno? Cos’è importante? A quale attività dedica il suo tempo?

Il suo primo pensiero è rivolto alla famiglia? agli amici? alle relazioni con loro? Dopo un’analisi approfondita, è possibile purtroppo concludere che ciò che attira maggiormente la sua attenzione, soprattutto negli ultimi anni, sono i social media, che hanno cambiato i comportamenti quotidiani e hanno inondato di pregiudizi le opinioni.

Ci sono sempre più persone di tutte le età che li usano, e molti di noi, non solo hanno un account sui social network, ma hanno anche bisogno di accedervi ogni giorno o anche più volte al giorno. Inoltre, possiamo vedere che durante molte attività mondane appare indispensabile avere con se lo smartphone dotato di fotocamera e accesso a Internet, in quanto la rete costantemente incoraggia a condividere istantanee e pensieri della vita privata, fornendo agli individui la sensazione di esistere, ma sollevando nel frattempo delicate questioni dei limiti della privacy.

Ci sono luoghi o situazioni in cui non viene messo in rete un reportage fotografico? Ci sono momenti in cui non essere connessi all’uso dei dispositivi mobili appare normale? “Social Toilet” infatti rappresenta in modo ironico uno dei cambiamenti più importanti e radicali avvenuti nel mondo moderno.

L’installazione pone lo spettatore in un ambiente stretto e travolgente che dà l’impressione di una stanza della paura. Ci sono condizioni apparentemente favorevoli per il destinatario ma, la presenza di una serie di loghi già pervasivi simboleggia le centinaia di migliaia di profili visitati quotidianamente sui social network. L’unico oggetto che appare di solito come luogo simbolico di privacy e riservatezza induce a porsi domande molto importanti: è possibile credere davvero che la vita privata sia al sicuro? Oppure i social media possono dare un senso di sicurezza maggiore all’interno delle abitazioni? “Social Toilet” induce l’osservatore ad immaginare un mondo migliore in cui le persone, in modo consapevole (e anche divertente) utilizzino le innovazioni tecnologiche.

What does the life of modern man look like? What is important? To which activity does he devote his time? Does his first thought go to his family? to friends? to relations with them? After an in-depth analysis, unfortuently it is possible to conclude that what attracts his attention the most, especially in recent years, is social media, which has changed daily behaviors and flooded opinions with prejudices.

More and more people of all ages are using them, and many of us not only have an account on social networks, but also need to log in every day or even several times a day. Furthermore, we can see that during many down-to-earth activities it appears essential to have a smartphone with a camera and Internet access always with you, as the network constantly encourages sharing snapshots and thoughts of private life, providing individuals with the feeling of existing, but lifting in the meanwhile delicate issues of the limits of privacy.

Are there places or situations where a photographic reportage is not put online? Are there any moments when not being connected to the use of mobile devices seems normal? In fact, “Social Toilet” ironically represents one of the most important and radical changes that have taken place in the modern world.

The installation places the viewer in a narrow and overwhelming environment that gives the impression of a room of fear. There are apparently favorable conditions for the recipient, but the presence of a series of already pervasive logos symbolizes the hundreds of thousands of profiles visited daily on social networks. The only object that usually appears as a symbolic place of privacy and confidentiality prompts us to ask very important questions: is it possible to really believe that private life is safe? Or can social media give a greater sense of security inside homes? “Social Toilet” induces the observer to imagine a better world in which people use technological innovations in a conscious (and fun) way.

2018 Quotidianamente ci investe un bombardamento incessante di messaggi, di milioni di post e tweet sui social network, incursioni dirette nella nostra coscienza che lievitano rapidamente sul palmo di ogni mano. Tali assalti sono tanto persistenti da aver alterato profondamente il nostro stile cognitivo e i nostri metodi di apprendimento, nonché – com’è evidente – i nostri sistemi di comprensione ed elaborazione delle informazioni.

Questa prigionia, che deriva da una situazione globale caratterizzata dall’invasiva esperienza di un mondo filtrato dagli smartphone, impone un ritmo sempre più veloce. Le sue dinamiche, grazie alla diffusione massiccia della rete, sembrano per certi versi in balia di flussi contraddittori di informazioni.

Notizie vere smentite da fasulle e viceversa, avvisi attendibili che seguono e si immischiano ad altri totalmente privi di ogni fondamento, comunicazioni sicure e annunci ingannevoli. Crei una pagina web, metti un titolo “forte”, usi sapientemente gli aggettivi, inserisci poi una foto “potente” e il bersaglio è (quasi sempre) centrato. Quanti hanno gli strumenti critici per decodificare e difendersi dalle manipolazioni deliberate e sistematiche, dalle campagne denigratorie o promozionali, dai messaggi ambigui e ostinatamente continui? Quanti vivono imprigionati nella solitudine e nell’individualismo?

Cos’è e da dove viene questa chiusura in sé stessi, se non da una forza possente e diametralmente opposta alla solidarietà, da una energia negativa, che blocca gli effetti benefici ed essenziali del farsi forza a vicenda per la vita in società?

Every day we are constantly bombarded with messages, millions of posts and tweets in social networks, direct intrusions into our conscience, which quickly begin to rise in the palm of each hand. Such assaults are so persistent as to have profoundly altered our cognitive style, learning methods, and systems for understanding and processing information.

This imprisonment, which derives from a global situation characterized by the invasive experience of a world filtered by smartphones, imposes an ever faster pace. Thanks to the massive diffusion of the network, its dynamics seem to some extent at the mercy of contradictory flows of information. Real news is denied by phony, reliable notices that follow and get mixed up with others without any foundation, secure communications and misleading announcements. You create a website, place a “sensitive” title, use adjectives wisely, and then insert a “powerful” photo, and the target is (almost always) centered. How many of us have the critical tools to decode and defend against deliberate and systematic manipulations, disparaging or promotional campaigns, ambiguous and stubbornly continuous messages? How many of us live imprisoned in solitude and individualism?

What is it and where does this closure in oneself come from, if not from a powerful and diametrically opposed force to solidarity, from a negative energy that blocks the beneficial effects of making each other strong and essential for life in society?

2020 Negli ultimi anni è sempre più dilagante nei giovani, e frequentemente anche nei meno giovani, la “nomofobia” (NO Mobile Phone PhoBIA), ovvero la paura di perdere o comunque di essere privo della possibilità di utilizzare il proprio cellulare. Il termine è stato coniato per la prima volta in Inghilterra nel 2008, durante uno studio commissionato dal governo britannico e volto ad investigare la correlazione tra lo sviluppo di disturbi dello spettro ansioso e l’iper- utilizzo di mobile phones. Questo crea infatti dei veri e propri stati di ansia e frustrazione derivanti dalla sensazione di disconnessione da parenti e amici. Numerosi studi hanno esplorato tali variabili, riscontrando sia la presenza di elevati livelli di introversione e nevrosi, che bassa autostima, crescente impulsività correlata a significative condizioni ansiogene.

In recent years, the “nomophobia” (NO Mobile Phone PhoBIA), or the fear of losing or being deprived of the possibility of using their mobile phones, has been increasingly rampant among young people. The term was first used in England in 2008 during a study commissioned by the British government to investigate the correlation between the development of anxiety spectrum disorders and the overuse of mobile phones. This, in fact, creates real states of anxiety and frustration deriving from the feeling of disconnection from relatives and friends.

Numerous studies have explored these variables, finding both the presence of high levels of introversion and neurosis, along with low self-esteem and increasing impulsivity related to significant anxious conditions.

With the work “FUTURE”, the artist wants to imply the fragility of an individual who is always connected, who cannot free himself from the chains (represented in the work by the different intertwining of electrical wires) that keep him constantly clinging to his devices, almost as if they were his only source of life.

The work does not intend to demonize new technologies. Thanks to their use, people undoubtedly have been advantaged, and society has obtained enormous benefits from them. Just think of the historical period in progress in which, for two years now, the whole world has been in a health emergency, and without the communication that the Internet and various devices offer, it would not have been possible to inform people about the regulations and precautions to be taken, nor to work or study as has been done thanks to smart working and remote teaching.

Con l’opera “FUTURE” si vuole sottintendere la fragilità di un individuo sempre connesso, che non riesce a liberarsi dalle catene (rappresentate nell’opera dai diversi intrecci di fili elettrici) che lo tengono costantemente aggrappato al suo device, rappresentato quasi, come se fosse la sua unica fonte di vita.

L’opera non ha comunque l’intento di demonizzare le nuove tecnologie, perché grazie al loro utilizzo abbiamo indubbi vantaggi e la società ne ha ricavato enormi facilitazioni, basti pensare al periodo storico in corso in cui, da due anni a questa parte, tutto il mondo è in emergenza sanitaria e, senza la comunicazione che Internet e diversi dispositivi offrono, non sarebbe stato possibile né informare la gente sulle normative e le precauzioni da prendere, né lavorare o studiare come si è fatto grazie allo smart working e alla didattica a distanza.

Per ogni situazione servono delle “istruzioni” specifiche: sarebbe dunque importante che ci fossero maggior attenzione e cura dell’educazione digitale fin da molto piccoli, cosicché il nuovo mondo di Internet possa popolarsi di utenti consapevoli ed essere un posto più sano e sicuro.

For each situation, specific “instructions” are needed. It would be important that there be more attention and care to digital education from an early age so that the new world of the Internet can be populated with aware users, and thus be a healthier and safer place.

Una Clessidra composta da piccolissimi componenti elettronici è l’opera SOCIAL TIME, realizzata inserendo al suo interno numerosi smartphone spezzettati manualmente. L’opera è accompagnata da un video di pochissimi secondi che vede come protagonista uno smartphone pronto ad essere frullato all’interno di un robot da cucina. Tuttavia, l’opposizione della tecnologia ad essere distrutta ci appare evidente quando il contenitore in cui è inserito si rompe, agevolando così la fuga dello stesso device. È stato necessario impiegare diverse ore per ridurre in piccolissime parti decine di telefoni e per riuscire a riempire la clessidra.

Oggi si parla molto di “gestire”, “governare” e “semplificare” la complessità, anche rispetto alle nuove tecnologie che consentono la condivisione e l’utilizzo di una mole inaudita di dati e informazioni, magari in tempo reale, riguardanti anche le relazioni umane, ad esempio attraverso i social.

Quest’opera, intenzionata a dimostrare che il processo di distruzione poteva essere ridotto ad un’azione rapida, semplificandola attraverso il frullatore, finisce invece per sottintendere che la stessa tecnologia ci impone di dover impiegare il nostro tempo, oltre che per crearla ed usarla, anche per distruggerla.

Non c’è niente da fare: siamo condannati a usare la tecnologia, che a poco a poco si sta trasformando fino a diventare invisibile ai nostri occhi pur restando, in realtà, onnipresente accanto a noi.

The “SOCIAL TIME” work is an Hourglass composed of tiny electronic components numerous manually chopped smartphones. The work is accompanied by a video of just a few seconds that sees, as the protagonist, a smartphone ready to be blended in a food processor. However, the opposition of technology to being destroyed appears evident to us when the container in which it is inserted breaks, thus facilitating the escape of the same device.

It was necessary to spend several hours reducing dozens of telephones into tiny pieces that fill the space of the hourglass. Today there is a lot of talk about “managing,” “governing” and “simplifying” complexity, especially concerning new technologies that allow the sharing and use of an unprecedented amount of data and information, perhaps in real-time, that also concern relationships of human beings, for example, through social networks.

This project, intended to demonstrate that the destruction process could be reduced to a rapid action, simplifying it through the blender, instead ends up implying that the same technology requires us to use our time and create and use even to destroy it.

There is nothing to do: we are condemned to use technology, which is gradually transforming itself to the point of becoming invisible to our eyes while remaining, in reality, omnipresent next to us.

2022 La vita quotidiana degli uomini ha subito, nell’ultimo anno, drastici cambiamenti che hanno disseminato paure e incertezze. La limitata libertà di movimento nel mondo fisico ha determinato il trasferimento delle relazioni e delle occasioni di incontro nel mondo virtuale dei “social” e la storia del mondo, dopo il 2020, scorre inesorabilmente dietro gli schermi di computer e smartphone. L’uso degli strumenti tecnologici, e la strabiliante molteplicità di stimoli e messaggi che attraverso essi è possibile esperire, ci ha illuso di poter sopravvivere senza danni in una situazione critica che ha messo seriamente in discussione le nostre pregresse certezze ma… è realmente così? Il fatto che trascorriamo gran parte del nostro tempo su Internet, davanti a uno schermo, ci aiuta davvero a risolvere i problemi e a metterci in relazione con gli altri?

Sembrerebbe che le conversazioni quotidiane tramite dispositivi mobili possano aiutarci nei contatti comunicativi e relazionali e possano offrirci una “mobilità” infinita, ma noi, come persone che hanno un forte bisogno di vivere in un gruppo cominciamo a percepire una condizione di oggettiva e, talvolta, eccessiva, solitudine! Diventiamo sempre più intrappolati in una zona immaginaria di una vita virtuale perfetta che, invece di collegarci, ci allontana gli uni dagli altri. La dipendenza dalla tecnologia abbassa sensibilmente la nostra capacità di assumere decisioni autonome e potrebbe portarci, a lungo termine, a conseguenze negative o addirittura fatali che, mettendo in crisi la capacità di discernere la validità dei percorsi da seguire, riuscirebbe a innescare meccanismi che una volta attivati, si presenterebbero difficili da ritirare o modificare.

Nell’installazione “SOCIAL TRAP”, vediamo un pallone gonfiabile e trasparente che mostra il nostro isolamento dal mondo esterno, in questo momento sempre più drammatico e profondo, e in cui c’è posto solo per una persona che si illude di poter attraversare il mondo intero, senza ostacoli o preoccupazioni. Per entrare siamo convinti dallo smartphone illuminato situato all’interno “che chiede aiuto”.

Tuttavia, è solo una trappola nella quale il movimento è illusorio e dalla quale sarà molto difficile uscire.

Our daily lives have undergone drastic changes over the past two years, spreading mainly fear and uncertainty.

Limited freedom of movement in the physical world has led to the transfer of relations and meeting opportunities to a virtual, seemingly “social” reality after 2020 that is inexorably flowing behind the screens of computers and smartphones. The use of technological tools and the amazing multitude of stimuli and messages that can be experienced through them gave us the illusion that we can easily survive in a critical situation that seriously questioned our previous beliefs, but... is it really so?

Does the fact that we spend a lot of time on the Internet in front of the screen really help us solve problems and connect with others?

It might seem that daily conversations via mobile devices can help us to keep in touch with each other and can offer us infinite “mobility,” but we, as people with a strong need to live in a group, begin to notice an objective and sometimes exaggerated state - loneliness! We live as in an inflatable bubble, guaranteeing us the comfort of insulation, in which our only “friend” is the phone screen. We are increasingly trapped in an imaginary zone of perfect virtual life, which, instead of connecting us, distances us from each other. Dependence on technology significantly reduces our ability to make independent decisions. In the long run, it can lead to negative or even fatal consequences. By undermining the ability to recognize the rightness of the paths to follow, it may trigger mechanisms from which it will be difficult to withdraw or modify them.

In the “SOCIAL TRAP” installation, we see a transparent, inflatable ball that shows our daily deepening isolation from the outside world, in which there is only room for one person, deluding that we can cross the whole world without obstacles or worries. We are encouraged to enter by the illuminated “calling for help” located inside the smartphone. However, it is only a trap that invites us to its place at every step, in which any movement is limited and from which it is very difficult to get out.

Marta Ciołkowska è nata a Łódź (PL) nel 1993 e vive tra Italia e Polonia. Ha conseguito il Diploma Accademico e Specialistico di primo e secondo livello in Interior Design, presso l’Accademia di Belle Arti di Łódź. Ha visitato numerosi musei, fondazioni, gallerie e archivi internazionali alla ricerca di programmazioni e format innovativi, ma anche d’idee e spunti atti a far maturare la sua produzione artistica, con l’obiettivo di stabilire nuove partnership.

Si occupa di video, installazioni, performance e grafica. Nel 2014 vince la borsa di studio per la mobilità estera Erasmus+ e frequenta per un semestre l’Accademia di Belle Arti di Catania (Italia), dove ha la possibilità di essere presente a conferenze e workshop. È presente in numerosi cataloghi e pubblicazioni di mostre collettive e personali con menzioni speciali in riviste e siti web.

Da diverso tempo realizza progetti su tematiche sociopolitiche, osservando attentamente le dinamiche sociali, dell’ambiente, dell’attività umana o della sua assenza. I problemi del mondo moderno l’hanno portata a meditare sulle preoccupazioni che coinvolgono il nostro intero ecosistema, la nostra esistenza, la nostra impronta ecologica, e a sviluppare molteplici riflessioni riguardanti l’impatto della tecnologia e dell’arte sugli esseri umani.

Consumismo, sviluppo tecnologico, inquinamento, politica, economia, ecologia, social media, problemi sociali e diritti umani sono i temi principali delle sue opere recenti, in cui le attività performative e interdisciplinari hanno avuto un impatto visibile su gruppi sociali opportunamente selezionati. Attraverso una rappresentazione ironica dei difetti della società, provoca riflessioni e induce all’autocritica che ogni essere umano dovrebbe avere.

Dal 2015 è stata coinvolta in vari eventi artistici come mostre, festival e workshop internazionali.

Nel 2019 ha ricevuto un invito a partecipare ad una prestigiosa residenza artistica a Changsha, Hunan, in Cina, dove ha realizzato il progetto intitolato: “We shall overcome”, che ha coinvolto i cittadini cinesi, invitati a camminare insieme all’artista per veicolare il concetto che sarà possibile un reale cambiamento mondiale solo grazie al fatto che ognuno di noi possa aver chiaro l’obiettivo da raggiungere e possa muoversi verso di esso. Alla fine di Novembre dello stesso anno, ha esposto il suo video “Social Prison” presso il Museo d’arte Contemporanea

MACRO di Roma (Italia).

Nel 2020, dopo l’inizio della pandemia ha partecipato a molteplici mostre in diversi posti nel mondo come per esempio: “Casamatta discontinuità, capitolo uno/tre” presso Bastione Sangallo e Re-Public a Fano, Italia, con il video “We shall overcome”, poi sucessivamente con lo stesso progetto artistico in “Protest for Progress” proposto da Round Lemon e ZEST in Inghilterra. Con l’opera “Social Prison” invece ha fatto parte di un progetto espositivo: “#diamocidentro #letsdoit” ideato da Distretto A/ Faenza Art District a Faenza, Italia. È stata inserita in diversi festival come: “LOST” organizzato da Lacuna Festivals, Festival De Arte Lanzarote e Festival De Arte Fuerteventura 2020 nelle Isole Canarie; “Let’s talk about water”, Film Festival coordinato da Global Institute for Water Security in Canada dove, seguendo il tema dell’ecologia, ha presentato il video “Bottlefiled” o in “Unseen”, Simultan Festival svolto a Timișoara, Romania dov’è stato proiettato il video “We shall overcome” e workshops come “ARTIFAKE: ART INVADES PROPAGANDA” organizzato da ART TRANSPARENT Fondation (Polonia), Internews Ukraine (Ucraina) e Association of Audio-Visual Reporters (Armenia) realizzato in versione online a causa del Covid-19. Gran parte delle mostre e degli eventi svolti in quell’anno sono stati posticipati oppure organizzati in versione online.

Nel 2021 ha contribuito alla mostra “Sustainable Views” organizzata e realizzata da Espronceda, Institute of Art & Culture a Barcellona in Spagna con la video installazione “Bottlefiled”, un progetto dove si sollevano importanti quesiti a cui l’essere umano deve necessariamente rispondere per trovare, con solerte e tempestiva cura, soluzioni valide che possano evitare la sua definitiva estinzione. Nello stesso anno è stata coinvolta nel progetto di residenza artistica: “Artivism“ presso la Cittadellarte Fondazione Pistoletto e UNIDEE Residency Programs svolta a Biella (Italia), imperniata sulle tematiche di sostenibilità ed ecologia. Infine, sempre nel 2021, ha avuto la possibilità di partecipare a “Ibrida Festival“, festival delle arti intermediali che si tiene a Forlì (Italia).

Attualmente è impegnata nella creazione di nuovi progetti collegati alla vita sociale e all’unione globale.

Marta Ciołkowska was born in Łódź in 1993 and lives both in Italy and Poland. She holds a Bachlor’s and Master’s Degree in Interior Design at the Strzemiński Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź. She has visited numerous museums, foundations, galleries and international archives not only for the pursuit of ideas to develop her artistic production but also to establish new partnerships. She deals with video, installation, performance and graphics. In 2014 she won the Erasmus+ scholarship for foreign mobility and attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Catania (Italy) for one semester. Her works have been included in numerous catalogues and publications of group and solo shows, with special mentions in magazines and websites.

For some time, she has been carrying out projects on socio-political issues, carefully observing social dynamics, the environment, and human activity or lack thereof. The modern world’s problems have led her to meditate on concerns that affect our entire ecosystem, our existence, and our ecological footprint, leading her to develop multiple reflections on the impact of technology and art on human beings. Consumerism, technological development, pollution, politics, economics, ecology, social media, social problems and human rights are the main themes of her recent works, in which performative and interdisciplinary activities have had a visible impact on appropriately selected social groups.

Through an ironic representation of the defects of society, her work provokes reflections and induces self-criticism that every human being should have.

Since 2015 she has been involved in various artistic events such as international exhibitions, festivals and workshops.

In 2019 she received an invitation to participate in a prestigious artistic residency in Changsha, Hunan, China, where she created the project entitled: “We shall overcome”. This project invited Chinese citizens to walk together with the artist to convey the concept that change is possible when we have a clear goal that we can actively move towards together.

At the end of November, she exhibited her video “Social Prison” at the MACRO Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome.

In 2020, after the beginning of the pandemic, she participated in multiple exhibitions in different pla-

She has been selected to be part in international workshops such as “ARTIFAKE: ART INVADES PROPAGANDA” organized by ART TRANSPARENT Foundation (Poland), Internews Ukraine (Ukraine) and Association of Audio-Visual Reporters (Armenia) realized in online version due to Covid-19. Most of the exhibitions and events held that year were postponed or organized in an online version.

Finally, she had the opportunity to participate in “Ibrida Festival,” a festival of intermediate arts held in Forlì (Italy).

She is currently working on the creation of new projects related to social life and global union.
