Have you seen Edan
…..missing from Montville since January 18th!
Have you seen Edan Huntington. He has been missing in the Montville area since January 18th.
Edan Huntington, from the Gold Coast, was last seen around 5am on January 18, 2023 driving a dark grey 2010 Ford Territory with NSW licence plates CQG59F down Boongala Ave in Montville.
Edan Huntington had been staying with his father at a holiday house at Montville and on January 18th he was feeling unwell and called the ambulance service. On the arrival of the ambulance at his address Edam had already left the address. A neighbour had seen him drive off about 20 minutes before the arrival of the ambulance.
His mother Delia Harpur who was not staying at the address said that this behaviour was out of character for her son to be out of contact for such a long time. He had left all his personal belongings at the home.
Ms Harpur issues a plea for anyone with any information to come
forward and advise the police service of that information. There had been no sign of Edam, nor has his car had not been scanned on any cameras and there had been no activity on his bank accounts.
Sergeant Peter Hocken of the Sunshine Coast police said that almost a month after Mr Huntington was last seen, police and family held “grave concerns” for his safety. Sergeant Hocken continued to say that Edan was “distressed” over medical issues the morning he disappeared and he was trying to come to terms with that issue at the time.
Anyone with information is being urged to contact police by phone on 131 444 or via https://www.police.qld.gov.au/reporting

Maleny Show-grounds
“dogs causing some trepidation”
Some users of the Maleny Show-grounds are disappointed that the Sunshine Coast Council is seriously considering restricting their use to just one portion of the grounds.
The grounds are very popular as an off leash dog walking area.
Maleny dog owners are demanding the Sunshine Coast Council backs down on a proposal to restrict the area available as an “off leash” dog walking area to the top corner of the show-grounds..
This follows a number of complaints about the poor behaviour of a small number of dog owners. There have been problems with a few dog owners who are not picking up after their dogs or persist letting their dogs go down to the horse area when there are horses there, which is very dangerous.
Dogs in Maleny group members said the proposals were overreach, with the response outweighing the poor behaviour of a small number of owners. Another ground user said that for any agreement over issues in this area needs all dog owners to be fully responsible for their dogs, including picking up their dog poo.
The areas are also used for sports such as cricket and soccer and leaving dog deposits on the ground is a health hazard.
A spokesperson for the Maleny group, Maleny Dog Owner Community Inc, Mr. Bo Williams has recently met with Sunshine Coast Councillor for the Maleny area, Mr. Winston Johnston to attempt to reach a solution that would satisfy both sides of this dispute. The show-grounds being a large area provides a large zone for big and small dogs to run freely and owners to meet on a regular basis.
Today everything is recorded on a cameras somewhere. With the development of digital photography costings of photos has been reduced to almost nothing, but yesterday you had to consider the cost of film and the processing.
Mr Williams continued, “We should add more signage, because there is basically no signage to educate people on what to do… common sense things like closing the gates, picking up your dog poo, and similar signs to keep prompting people.”
If disrespectful dog owners are fined they should remember not to complain about receiving the fine as it is to benefit all users.
Councillor Johnston said that he was committed to an off-leash dog park in the precinct.

Safer Internet Day is recognised every year on 7 February.
This year marks 20 years since the initiative was launched, and we have seen technology advance in leaps and bounds since 2003! While there are so many benefits, the growth of digital technology has exposed us to many real-world issues.
The statistics surrounding how Aussies have been impacted online in the past twelve months is shocking.
In a recent report, almost half of all Australian children active on the internet were found to
have been treated in a harmful or hurtful way, while approximately 30% of teenagers had been contacted by a stranger online.
At the other end of the spectrum, 2/3 adults online have been impacted by activities like scams and data-hacking.
These numbers are on the climb. It is incumbent upon all of us to arm ourselves with the know-how to stay safe online.
If you – or someone you know – have been impacted by some of these issues, visit ID Care, a local service. They can provide specialist advice and support:

After the fantastic news that Maleny-Kenilworth Road is getting fixed up at Cambroon on a 2.8km stretch of Maleny-Kenilworth Road from Lees Road through to Walkers Farm. I’m now setting my sights on the Witta section.

Repairing Rotted Timber Window Sills!
Prior to actually applying paint to the outside of your home there is a lot of preparation work to be done first. Firstly clean down then repair and restore any rotted woodwork.
The problem of rotted woodwork normally starts with the paint breakdown through one simple factor…..co-efficient differentials of expansion and contraction. In plain terms, where the paint system bridges a 90 degree angle with a sharp internal corner, the 2 timbers move at different rates according to their densities/thicknesses and as a result “stretch” the paints beyond their ability to maintain relative adhesion to the timber.
This occurs as the paint weathers and loses its flexibility. Once the paints have cracked in the internal corners, it’s an avenue for water to seep into the wood. From here on it’s a progressive step to decay.
Once the saturation level of the wood reaches in excess of 25%, the air-borne mould spore carried into the timber start to propagate and then devour the lignin and cellulose of the wood, thus creating a moist environment, and exponential decay. Less than 25% saturation, the mould spore will remain dormant and inactive.
REPAIR
An assessment of the decay has to be made in the first instance. If the decay has gone too far, the only sensible remedy is to remove and replace. However if there is still some structural integrity, saturating the soft dozy timber with NORGLASS NORSEAL can provide a permanent solution.
To do this remove (by sanding) any residual paint, then drill holes randomly along the sill, at about a 30 degree angle.
Then mix up a volume (250ml mix) of Norseal and using a small funnel pour the mixture into the holes. As the Norseal drains away, come back and refill them. Repeat a few times and then coat the entire sill.
Leave to cure for about 48 hours. A plastic cover should be placed over the sill to prevent dew (or rain) gaining access.
Next, fill the holes with NORGLASS NORFILL, a white epoxy filler. As well as filling the holes, use the Norfill to radius out the internal 90 degree angles using a paddle pop stick or back of a teaspoon. What this does is to contain the lateral differentials of both timber interfaces, thus preventing further internal paint cracking. This is essential to the longevity of the paint structure…and the ongoing

Be aware of fake registration number plates
Criminals are increasingly using hi-tech 3D printers to make false number plates, using them to commit crimes ranging from robbery to petrol drive-offs.
Victims often do not know it has happened until they cop a string of fines, or worse, face potential arrest.
If you have to advertise your vehicle or paste a picture on social media always delete the registration plates or you could pay a big penalty if your plates are cloned.
A RACQ spokesperson said that whilst there is very little motorists can do to protect themselves some care should be taken to reduce the possibility of your plates being copied.

Our Public Utilities are at risk of Cyber Crime
It has been found that cyberthreats to utilities are growing more severe and sophisticated. A survey of electric utilities around the world with gas, solar and wind portfolios, as well as water utilities — expect at least one cyberattack on critical infrastructure within the next year.
A significant part of Australia’s critical infrastructure is owned or managed by local government. These attacks normally result in a shutdown or loss of operational data. CI-ISAC is dedicated to building communities to leverage the network effects of riskbased intelligence sharing.
The Sunshine Coast has been selected as the location for a new national organisation, The Critical Infrastructure – Information Sharing and Analysis Centre (CI-ISAC) which has an aim of protecting the nation against cyber criminals.
Under the guidance of CI-ISAC’s Chief Executive Officer David Sandell, the not-for-profit industrybased organisation provides comprehensive information and analysis advice to assist its membership base protect Australia’s most critical infrastructure.
A spokesperson for CI-ISAC said, “If we act together and share cyber threat intelligence, we can only get better at pre-empting attacks, while contributing to defending Australia’s data highway and all of the sensitive and personal data public services and businesses collect”.
It also assesses the industry’s readiness to address future attacks and puts forward solutions to help the industry secure critical infrastructure.
CI-ISAC is just one of a number of internationally accredited hi-tech businesses to move to the Sunshine Coast. Much of this has been brought about by Sunshine Coast tech IA, an industry advocacy business that aims to position the Sunshine Coast as a nationally competitive region for its digital capabilities and strong industry advocacy.
Business on the Sunshine Coast can better compete nationally and globally thanks to the Sunshine Coast International Broadband Network and the new NEXTDC data centre which were initiated by the Sunshine Coast Council.
This can only create more highly skilled work in the area.
Do you have a mould problem
Why you should have an Air Dehumidifier
If you want your home to remain as comfortable as possible during the summer months, you should consider using a dehumidifier to reduce the amount of excessive moisture in the air.
With the present indications are that the atmosphere will remain humid throughout the next 4 to 6 months mould and mildew will continue to grow.
Using a dehumidifier during the summer also improves the air quality inside your home and can eliminate potential allergens like mould and mildew. A dehumidifier also reduces the chance of dust mites which thrive in high humidity areas and also eliminates odours.

Try paddling down the Mary River from “start to finish”
The Mary River.
The Mary River rises at Booroobin, west of Maleny in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. In 1847 the Mary River was named after the wife of Governor Fitzroy, Lady Mary Lennox.
The river then flows north through the towns of Conondale, Kenilworth, Gympie, Tiaro and Maryborough before emptying into the Great Sandy Strait, near Maryborough between the Queensland coast mainland and Fraser Island.
Both Obi Obi Creek and Little Yabba Creek flow into the Mary River.
It is the home of the endangered Mary River Turtle (Elusor macrurus), the Queensland Lungfish (Neoceratodus forsteri) and the endangered Mary River Cod (Maccullochella mariensis)
During times of heavy rainfall the Mary River brings heavy flooding to the towns that have grown along its banks, towns such as Gympie and Maryborough.
Not too many people can claim to have paddled down the entire length from Conondale to Maryborough.
Today we worry whenever our children are out of our sight. Very seldom are they allowed the adventures that were allowed youngsters of our greandparents early years.
The Flesser family settled Witta, then called Teutoberg in the late 1880’s. They came from the area around Beenleigh. The area they came to was still an uncleared rainforest area.
Christian Flesser brought his wife, Caroline (nee Vandriek). Christian Flesser had been a timber cutter prior to coming to Witta so he was well prepared for settling into the area. Jack was the younger child of the family and he was born at home at Witta. His other siblings, August, Charlie and sisters, Bertha and May remained living at Beenleigh.
In 1913 the Flessers obtained property in Conondale adjacent to the property owned by George Ahern. His grandson, Mike Ahern was later to become Premier of
Queensland for a short time. It was from this this home in 1914 that Jack and Charlie decided to paddle down the Mary from its headwaters to the mouth.
During February and March 1914 there was heavy rains in the headwaters of the Mary River and as a result the Mary was quick flowing all the way through to the coast. Taking the equivalent of $10 each and launching at the junction of The Mary River and Harpers Creek begins an early story of the region of a cautionary
You don’t have to be mad - just be a pioneer! This story was recounted at the Landsborough Historical Museum by Jack Flesser in September 1980.

Try paddling down the Mary River from “start to finish”
canoe tale with a fortunately good outcome. It was then that the Flesser brothers decided to battle their way all the way to the coast. The started by shaping their canoes using an axe and adze. The canoes were about 2.5m long and about 500mm wide. They had about 200mm of freeboard.
The two canoes were very small craft in which to navigate all the way down the Mary River in ood.
In the description of this journey as told by Jack Flesser at the Landsborough Museum on September 9th, 1980 Jack said that the journey was relatively uneventful until Gympie. It was just another Mary River flood. They travelled down the river with the canoes lashed together.
Arrival at Gympie was met with a further torrential downpour. It was a Saturday afternoon. They stayed in Gympie, camping, until the following Tuesday and during that time the river rose a further “3 and a half foot”. said Jack. He continued to say that such was the flooded current “the snakes even tried to make friends with them”. On leaving Gympie they could continually hear the sound of the rushing water and it was really rushing along. They soon arrived at the Tiaro Falls. Normally there is.a drop of at least 15 to 16 foot, but on this occasion there was no drop at all, they just floated along across them. “We continued on from there continually battling the quickly streaming river.
We subsequently arrived in Maryborough on the Thursday afternoon at about 3p.m. No welcoming party there for us. In total we were actually on the water for a total of 40 hours to cover the whole distance.” said Jack.
On arrival in Maryborough Jack and Charlie again camped on the banks of the Mary. Ironically it was during that night that the floodwaters finally took control of the canoes and they floated away.
Taking the night steam train known as the Old ’99, arriving at Landsborough some hours later then walking from there to their home at Reesville via Maleny. Still with money in their pockets. After the flood the canoes were eventually found further down the Mary River. The Maryborough City Council recovered the canoes and for years after they were on display in the Maryborough Botanical Gardens. After many years they eventually disintegrated to a point where they were removed from the gardens. Inquiries have been made to ascertain if any other person has travelled down the Mary River in flood and in home-made canoes, but no others can be found.
Maybe this is just one adventure that can be repeated by another adrenaline fuelled adventurer, but would they be able to do it in just 40 hours “on the water”?
There are bound to be many other stories about our forefathers from this area and we would like to hear those stories before they are lost forever.
Electricity taken for granted!
Today we take our electricity supply as essential and if we lose it for 10 minutes we start to panic.
Did you know that it was not until February 1940 that Maleny actually got grid connection to electricity when Maleny was connected to the North Coast Rural Electricity Scheme feeding from Nambour.
By April 1940 Montville was also connected to the Nambour link.
The electricity came from City Electric Light Company via Nambour from the power station in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane.

Being a part of a community can make us feel as though we are a part of something greater than ourselves.
An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions
About one-in ten young people were referred to as chronic offenders who engaged in persistent offending behaviour throughout childhood, which continued into adulthood. They were responsible for one-third of all crimes recorded.
A major factor associated with many young people’s offending is their history of trauma within their family. Another factor is where young people come from disadvantaged and violent communities. Domestic violence is a big part of this traumatic scene. This can be sources of risk for offending because they provide children with a negative social environment. Many Queenslanders who have been regularly terrorised by youths are now turning their homes into virtual jails. Many of the older generation have also taken the decision to limit the amount of time they are away from their homes as they worry about being the victim of extreme violence. When a court sentences your child to time in custody, or if your child is refused bail, they go to a youth detention centre. Whilst there are some youth who need, for the safety of the remainder of our community need to be separated from our community. But simply sentencing youth to imprisonment only is not the simple fix.
Whilst juvenile crime cannot be stemmed entirely by governments and the state’s police service. Families and communities also need to step up to do their part in reducing juvenile crime.
Various governments have attempted to fix juvenile crime simply by “throwing money at it” without having a long termed plan or a statement of planned outcome and plan measurement. There need to be some consideration to ways of dealing with juvenile crime that may not be considered as requiring families of younger offenders to take responsibility for the youths actions. This responsibility could take the form of financial retribution, or where this is not possible physically completing community work. Maybe a system of limited detention whereby offenders live in detention centres which could be incorporated into farms or other industrial precincts and required to complete a number of work hours under supervision during the daytime thus earning free time to leave the detention centre for social activities.
In Queensland we have already found that a liberal approach to juvenile crime has not worked. Simply applying a bandaid to the problem is not the answer. All political parties have made the problem worse through using juvenile crime as a political football. By continually dividing into indigenous or white offenders does nothing but politicises the matter. Criminal behaviour is criminal behaviour irrespective of who commits it.
Truthful Jones says And he swears that it 100% true - No Bulls##t”
Truthful tells us about his neighbours young son who went to mass last Sunday. As everyone was leaving the church, the Priest noticed the young boy in the hallway, looking at a number of pictures on the wall.
The Priest said, “Well, hello, young man, how are you today?” The boy said, “Oh, fine thanks Father.”
The Priest then said, “I see you are looking at the pictures on the wall, do you know who the men in those pictures are?”
The boy said “No, who are they?”
The Priest said proudly “Well, son, those are pictures of the men from our congregation who gave their life in the service”.
The boy replied, “ Which service Father, the 10 o’clock or the 11 o’clock service?
Morale: Men serve their communities in many different ways. Not always serving in the military.
Take time to remember Ash Wednesday
On the morning of February 16, 1983, Australia was to see Victoria and South Australia be consumed by fire in which 75 people died as a result of the fires; 47 in Victoria, and 28 in South Australia.
More than 3,700 buildings were destroyed or damaged.
Over a 24-hour period, more than 180 fires were burning, tearing through 400,000 hectares of land, an area four times the size of metropolitan Melbourne.

Where did Maleny get its name?
One theory argues that it was named Maleny because the Balfour brothers, who established the Colinton Station in 1841, were surveyors and they named Malleny Mountain on the Blackall Range after the tiny Scottish town of Malleny.

Selling
or buying a
property!
Here are a few things to consider during the process With Trove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny
Difference Between Joint Tenants and Tenants in Common
About to buy a property, but not sure how to allocate ownership?
It’s important to understand how you’re going to own your property. If you’re buying a property with another person, you can own it as joint tenants or tenants in common and this is usually dependant on the relationship between the parties and how you want to own your property.
Joint Tenancy
In a joint tenancy the parties to an agreement for the purchase of property individually hold an undivided equal share of the property. Where both parties purchase the property together, there is no specified percentage as to who owns what. A joint tenant does not have the right to transfer or sell their interest in the property
In order to remove their interest, they must apply to have the joint tenancy severed which will transfer that interest to the other joint tenant
Furthermore, it should be noted that there can be more than two joint tenants to the agreement although it is most common to see joint tenancy in the form of a marriage like partnership.
Tenants in common
When purchasing as tenants in common it provides each individual to the transaction with a certain percentage of ownership. This can be equal, but also be in other percentages. Each party that owns a share of the property has the right to sell or transfer their interest in the property to a third party. This normally occurs when the purchasers are not associated with each other. A common example would be where two or more friends decide to go into an agreement to purchase a property. In this case, each person will be able to own a different percentage based on how much they pay.
Joint tenants and tenants in common and survivorship
The primary difference is in survivorship depending on which approach is chosen, different parties will get the interest of a party that dies. Under a joint tenancy, because the ownership structure cannot be split and there are restrictions to transfer the interest, the death of one party will leave their interest with the other existing party or parties
This is different to a tenancy in common, as parties own
individual portions of the property. These portions will become part of their inheritance upon death and will therefore pass on under their estate
Conclusion
If you are planning on purchasing a property with another person, it is vital to understand how ownership of the property will work. A significant part of this is knowing where you want your interest to go if you die.
Seek legal advice before taking action.
Should you have any questions please contact our office on 07 5494 3511 Monday to Friday between 08:30 and 17:00 AEST. Take care everyone!

The Hinterlandgrapevine Online News Travelling Jackaroo “Getting to the Top”
“Back on the road” ….. continuing on with my mission!
Recently I had a major mechanical breakdown for the first time in a long time, in fact it stopped me dead in my tracks ,out on the road and I couldn’t keep going.
I spent the night camped on the side of the highway and this morning after standing on top of the plane the previous day to get reception reached out and fortunately Geraldton Towing Services came all the way out to pick me up and take me to Geraldton where I was originally heading to get some various other repairs done before I head across the Nullarbor in the coming months.
I cannot thank not only the men from Geraldton towing enough and to Allan who came out with his hiab to pluck the gyrocopter off the tractor to enable it to be transported as it was intended to be on the truck. As a result of this breakdown I will be in Geraldton for the next 2-3 weeks at Geraldton Towing whilst repairs take place as well as general work after 11,500kms of travel that we’ve done so far as you can imagine a few things need to be done.
“Donations Record”
Pleased to say that I think I’ve beaten my previous record for fundraising over a month travelling with The Great Moscow Circus here in Cannington by raising $2,839.70 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service!
Favourite things in life
One of my favourite things about the life I live is the diversity of it, to sum it up. One minute I can be dressed neatly meeting someone such as the Premier at an awards ceremony in a city and then a week later be in the middle of nowhere out on the road cooking up a feed in jeans covered in grease and oil listening to road trains roaring through the night after shaking my tins throughout the day fundraising.
The fact that I have the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life from those who are doing well and those not so much, to get to listen to people from all walks of society and to make connections with them all and hear their stories.
Be a real “Mate”
Make sure that you look after your matesTreat them all well!.

Another view of Pattemore House
Pattemore House or Fairview as it is also known was built in 1907 by the four Pattemore brothers for their parents – John and Emily Pattemore – from white beech timber, grown, pit-sawn and dressed by hand on the property.
JR Pattermore operated his Maleny property as a dairy farm on the share farming principle.
Fairview is one of the oldest examples of early twentieth century farmhouses still in its original location.
To the left of the back door was the laundry under a skillion roof; it was paved with slats and cobble stones and had tubs, bench and copper
