Maleny Music Festival 2025

Once again the sweet sounds are also set to flow in the hinterland, with Maleny Music and Performing Arts Inc. receiving $9,500 for the annual Maleny Music Festival which will be held between the 7th and 9th November, 2025. The first festival was held in 2012.. This year’s event would include more than 120 acts.

“It will feature local musicians playing folk, traditional Irish, blues and Americana, as well as performing poetry, dance, acrobatics, workshops and activities for children,” said Mr Tony Collins who is event manager.

This event gives our community a wonderful opportunity to connect through music and creativity, while also showcasing Maleny as a wonderful, hinterland destination.

“It’s important to the event organisers that ticket prices are affordable, so the festival remains accessible to everyone, while also providing paid employment opportunities for our musicians too. And of course, an increase in visitors to Maleny also means more money spent at local businesses.” he continued. “The festival is family-friendly, and we encourage all ages to come along, with kids under 12 free.”

Because the Festival is a small, inclusive festival, the atmosphere

Maleny District Park Consultation

The Maleny District Park is now in the final planning stage.. Imagine a park with:

The Lookout’: Stunning views and picnic spots

The Bails’: Playgrounds and stargazing lawns

POLITICAL

COMMENT MADE BY Queensland Opposition Leader Steven

“The LNP needs to “go find the money” to build a new spinal injuries unit at the Princess Alexandra Hospital.”

This comes after the former Queensland Labor Government promised it , but left no money to deliver their promised “state of the art” spinal unit at that hospital.

The Hill’: Mountain bike skills course and mega slide

The Hub’: Fenced dog exercise area, sports courts, and barbecue areas

We’ve drafted a concept plan for a new district park and crafted these spaces with your ideas in mind. Now it’s time to see if we’ve hit the mark.

The district park has been divided into four distinct areas, each offering a variety of different recreational experiences.

‘The Lookout’ along North Maleny Road will be an ideal location to take in the views across the precinct with a viewing spot and picnic facilities proposed.

‘The Bails’ near the old Fairview Milking Bails proposes a small playground, open lawn area and several picnic locations which could be a great space for gathering during the day or to view the stars at night.

Next to Cloudwalk Estate, ‘The Hill’ takes advantage of the natural topography of the area for a proposed mountain bike skills course, a ‘mega’ slide and viewing places over the wetlands and forest.

June 6th 1944. D Day The Allied liberation of Europe.

By the time that you read this it will be exactly 81 years since the liberation of Europe from the NAZI’s would have begun.

June 6, 1944, marked D-Day, the day Allied forces launched the invasion of Normandy, France, during World War II. This event, codenamed Operation Overlord, involved the largest amphibious invasion in history, with over 5,000 ships and landing craft transporting more than 150,000 troops to five beaches in Normandy. D-Day was a pivotal moment in the Allied liberation of Europe, marking the beginning of a long and costly campaign that ultimately led to the downfall of Nazi Germany.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions

“Some

Parents fail

their kids”

“Why are children away from home between 9p.m. and 6a.m.”

Daily we see or hear on the local newscasts about the serious and often deadly criminal acts carried out by children under the age of 12 years between the hours of 9p.m. and 6a.m. We often immediately blame the kids for their serious criminal acts, and to a point that is true because by the age of 12 years they should know the difference between right and wrong.

There is also negligence on the part of parents who fail to control the movements of youths under the age of 12 between the hours of 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. The fact that some parents don’t poses serious concerns for child safety, community well-being, and responsible parenting. Children at this age are particularly vulnerable, lacking the maturity and decisionmaking ability to navigate the risks that emerge during late-night hours. Allowing them to roam unsupervised during this time not only places them in potential danger but also contributes to issues such as juvenile delinquency, truancy, and exposure to harmful environments. Parental responsibility is fundamental in shaping a child's behaviour and ensuring their protection. When children are permitted to be out at night without supervision, it reflects a troubling level of disregard for their welfare. These late hours are often associated with increased risks of crime, exploitation, and accidents. A child under 12 should be in a secure environment—typically at home—engaging in activities that promote rest, learning, and development. Their presence in public or unsupervised spaces at night raises legitimate concerns about neglect. Moreover, this negligence can place additional burdens on law enforcement and community resources. Curfew laws and community guidelines exist to protect children, and when parents fail to enforce them, it undermines these protections. In many cases, such neglect may indicate broader family instability or a lack of proper guidance at home. Ultimately, the responsibility lies with parents or guardians to ensure their children are not placed in avoidable danger. Active engagement, supervision, and clear boundaries are necessary for healthy childhood development. Allowing young children to be unsupervised during late hours is not only irresponsible—it is a failure to uphold the most basic duties of care and protection that every child deserves. Perhaps there should be some penalty or other action taken against negligent parents to ensure that they make a concerted effort from an early age of the child to install proper behaviour. It is too late to do so by the time the child reaches pre-teen ears as by then the harmful behaviour has been instilled into the child and it will in almost all cases remain with that child all through their life.

If parents can’t then society must step in.

Truthful Jones says And he swears that it 100% true - No Bulls##t”

Truthful’s elderly brother from Ireland was in Maleny visiting him. He decided to go to Caloundra and have a walk along Dicky Beach.

When walking along the beach. he finds a bottle and rubs it. Out comes a genie. The genie agrees to grant him three wishes.

The Irishman says, "I've been walking on this beach all day. I'm thirsty. I wish I could have a mug of beer that never ends."

Poof, a frosty mug of beer appears in his hand. He drinks it down and sure enough, it fills itself back up again.

So the Irishman drinks that mug down. And it magically refills. He drinks again; it refills again.

By this time he's beginning to feel the effects, but the genie is also getting a big irritated. He's tapping his feet, looking at his watch, etc., and finally the genie says, "I got places to be. Have you decided on your other two wishes?”

The Irishman, staggering around by this time, looks at the mug as it fills up again, thinks for a minute, and says, "Yeah, just give me two more of these.”

Moral of story: Some people have nothing whilst others never know when they have enough of anything.

We trust that our partner organisations know how to best improve global access to proper sanitation – that means our donation could go to building toilets. To put it into perspective, a child under five dies every two minutes from diarrhoea diseases caused by poor water and sanitation.

COMPANY DIRECTORS BEWARE !

With Tove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny

The days when Company Directors could plead ignorance of their Company’s affairs are long gone with the courts showing very little sympathy for Director who use ignorance as a defence. No longer can a Director argue that the appointment was a token appointment or one that he or she was pressured into accepting.

Directors are expected to:

• Be proactive and actively participate in the management of the Company. Total nonparticipation is impermissible;

• Understand the role that a Director performs;

• Ensure that the solvency of the Company can be monitored on a continuing basis.

Directors in particular have an obligation to prevent their Company from incurring debts that the Company cannot pay for.

A Director is also expected to be able to judge the fine line between solvency and insolvency and be ready to act to prevent the Company engaging in insolvent trading. However to be able to identify the fine line between solvent and insolvent trading is not an easy one.

It is the Company’s cash-flow which is of crucial importance and this is where the line between solvent and insolvent trading can be found. A Company is only solvent if it is able to pay all of its debts "as and when they fall due” – not just some of its debts. A Company that has a surplus of assets over liabilities can still be technically insolvent because of the lack of cash flow to cover its debts.

If it is alleged that a Director has contravened the Corporations Act in relation to insolvent trading the Director must be able to prove one of the following as defence:

• when the Company incurred the debt the Director had reasonable grounds to expect that the Company was solvent and would remain solvent even if the debt was incurred; or

• when the Company incurred the debt the Director had reasonable grounds to believe (and actually believed) that a subordinate in the Company was competent enough to provide the correct information about the Company’s solvency status and that the

Director relied upon this information; or

• that when the debt was incurred the Director, because of illness or some other good reason, was unable to take part in the management of the company at that time; or

• that the Director took all reasonable steps to stop the Company from incurring the debt.

It is clear that although Directors may delegate certain responsibilities to other subordinates in the Company, they are still obliged to have an active role in the management of the affairs of the Company. To fail in this obligation to properly discharge the duties of the office of a Director could lead to personal exposure to liability and in many cases significant sums of money.

The Story Bridge in Brisbane spans the Brisbane River between Kemp Place and Kangaroo Point, Brisbane. It was built between 1935 and 1940.

Construction began on May 24, 1935, with the first sod being turned by the then Premier of Queensland, William Forgan Smith. The bridge was completed and opened to traffic on July 6th, 1940.

The Story Bridge is one of Brisbane’s most iconic landmarks, renowned for its distinctive cantilevered design and historical significance. Spanning the Brisbane River, it connects the northern suburb of Fortitude Valley with the southern suburb of Kangaroo Point. mmThe bridge stands as a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of the people involved in its construction.

Origins and Construction

The Story Bridge was conceived during the Great Depression as part of a state government initiative to provide employment and stimulate economic activity. Construction commenced in 1935 under the direction of the Queensland Government, with the Evans, Deakin-Hornibrook Construction Co. Pty Ltd consortium overseeing the project.

Northern End under construction 1938

The main beams of the bridge were manufactured at the Evans Deakin industrial complex on Evans Road, Moorooka. The design was led

by Dr. John Bradfield, renowned for his work on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Remarkably, over 95% of the steel used was manufactured in Australia, underscoring the project’s national significance. Three men died during the construction of the bridge. The price of building the bridge at that time was 1.6 million pounds.

Continued next page

The bridge was officially opened on 6 July 1940 by Governor Sir Leslie Orme Wilson, with an estimated 37,000 people attending the ceremony . Initially named the Jubilee Bridge in honour of King George V, it was renamed the Story Bridge after John Douglas Story, a senior public servant who played a pivotal role in its planning

Design and Specifications

The Story Bridge is the longest cantilever bridge in Australia, stretching 777 meters in length and rising 74 meters above the Brisbane River. Its central span measures 282 meters, making it the largest steel cantilever bridge in the country . The bridge was designed to accommodate vehicular, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic, reflecting a forward-thinking approach to urban infrastructure. The bridge had to be designed to give clearance to cargo ships as cargo ships went right up to the wharves at the now Southbank until the late 1970’s. Where Southbank now stands were warehouses where overseas cargo ships discharged their cargoes.

Historical Significance

Beyond its engineering feats, the Story Bridge holds a special place in Brisbane's history. During World War II, twin air raid shelters were constructed beneath the bridge to protect

https://issuu.com/Maleny-Grapevine-Community-News

civilians. In the 1974 floods, the bridge played a crucial role in rescue operations, with emergency services using it as a vantage point to coordinate relief efforts. The bridge also served as a backdrop for various cultural events, including the city's first riverside beach in 1986 and the launch of the Story Bridge Adventure Climb in 2005 .

The Story Bridge Adventure Climb is one of only three bridge climbs in the world. Climbing over the steel structure gives you an incredible bird's eye view over Brisbane City, Kangaroo Point and far beyond to the distant mountain ranges and up the Brisbane River.

Recent Developments

As the bridge approaches its 85th anniversary, concerns have emerged regarding its structural integrity. Reports indicate that the bridge is showing signs of deterioration, including concrete spalling and rust issues, which have led to restrictions for cyclists and pedestrians. Estimates suggest that refurbishment costs could reach up to $1 billion, with a business case funded by the federal government expected by 2027 .

Currently, the bridge is repainted every seven

The bridge has 536 decorative lights can be changed to any colour (except brown) with just the click of a button. Thy can be scheduled to light-ups of this Brisbane icon to help promote and raise awareness for a range of events and campaigns.

The bridge has even had a song written about it “Underneath the Story Bridge” by Maleny’s Own group “The Goodwills”.. The original version of that song certainly caught the simplicity and reality of living underneath the Story Bridge. An updated version of that song tells just how that simple life has changed living for those living underneath the Story Bridge - “KathunkKathunk - Kathunk. Those who have lived there would know just what this means.

Unfortunately, the bridge became one of Australia's most notorious suicide hotspots. As a result 3m high barriers finally installed on Story Bridge, where 130 people have died since 1975. It was ironical that the Water Police Station was conveniently located under the northern side of the bridge. Following the installation of the barriers there was an 87.3 per cent decline in jumping deaths.

Despite these challenges, the Story Bridge remains a beloved symbol of Brisbane's heritage and resilience.

The Brisbane City Council has invested more than $120 million in the Story Bridge over the past 20 years, which was in addition to spending around $3 million a year to maintain the bridge over the long term.

A roadmap to restore the Story Bridge by 2040 has been outlined by a team of

national infrastructure experts and efforts are underway to secure funding for its preservation, thus ensuring that future generations can continue to admire and utilise this iconic structure.

The funding for a full restoration is beyond the financial capacity of the council. How to fund the restoration is being considered and some of the options include:.

• annual joint contributions over a 15-year restoration project by the Queensland and Australian governments and Council; or

• the reintroduction of a toll like that in place on Sydney Harbour Bridge; or

• an annual rates levy and corporate sponsorship

Whilst nine of these options will be popular, unfortunately a difficult choice will have tone made.

These is just no option to allow the bridge to

Did you Know?

That Mapleton had a tramway to Nambour

The Mapleton Tramway was an 18 km long 2 ft gauge railway, which climbed the Highworth and Blackall Ranges, west of Nambour. . In many places the line was located on shelves in the mountainsides with magnificent views over the coastal lands to the sea. It used steep gradients and very sharp curves, and reached 380 metres (1247 ft) altitude.

The line was built over the first range by the Moreton Central Sugar Mill Company of Nambour between 1897 and 1904. Apart from the sugar crop it also carried passengers and mails.

Today’s Thought

“If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.

Make Australia Make Again!

If you want to live in a country that builds things you have to buy things that your country builds!

How much battery power do I need for my home?

Purchasing a battery is a big decision and you want to make sure you make the right choice – especially when we’re talking about battery size. At Redback, we get it. It’s difficult to know what battery will work best for your home and your lifestyle.

We always recommend talking with an accredited installer in your area, as they’re fully trained to look at all your individual needs and advise on the correct sized system.

RedEarth’s PowerOasis is a fully integrated, ready-to-run and modular Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) catering for the niche 50-400kVA power range.

It has the option to use both the inbuilt solar PV MPPT or AC-coupled solar PV inverters can be added.

Certified Energy Solutions

WE ARE PROUD TO BE A NETCC APPROVED RETAILER

Certified Energy Staff and friends recently were off to contribute to the Clean up Fraser Island weekend hosted by 4wd Queensland Association.

All major local 4x4 clubs converge to the island to clean up a stretch allocated to each club of rubbish both left from uncaring tourists and floating rubbish off shore.

It was a great initiative and we were all happy to be part of it!

While the media is pushing to close beaches to 4wds they conveniently leave out all the good our local clubs do for the local environment.

Over 8 tonnes of rubbish was collected by the combined efforts of 826 Volunteers, 338 Vehicles from the various clubs and their friends.

This event has been proudly run this for 24 years and we look forward to being back to celebrating 25 years in 2026.

“A good job well done.”.

Maleny SES looking for volunteers

Maleny State Emergency Service Group is looking for some volunteers to help get our community through the next disaster season.

You can put your desire to get involved to good use and serve our community. An easy way to do that by becoming a State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer.

Active SES members perform a diverse range of functions to respond to local, state and national disasters and emergencies. By joining the SES you may respond to many different types of activations as a result of disasters and emergencies.

An SES volunteer has an opportunity to participate in and develop a variety of emergency and rescue skills, including chainsaw operations, flood boat operations, road crash rescue and land search.

Not only will you be helping your community, you will make some great mates along the way.

Volunteers are given training to ensure that they have enough skills to be able to handle whatever task you need to do..

Melba Cafe and Bakery was a well-known establishment situated in the heart of the business centre of Maleny during the 1920’s and 1930’s.

The business started as a cafe about 1911 and in 1930 it extended to include an up-to-date bakery. They installed a most modern bakery plant

The firm of Walker and Co. comprising of two brothers, Messrs. R. G. and W. Walker who were descendants of a pioneering family of the Blackall Range. The business was conducted though Mr. M'Lean who was a baker of quality bread, pastry, and cakes. Meals at all hours could be obtained.

Catering for tourist parties is a specialty of the business. General cafe lines are carried, including fresh fruit, confectionery, soft drinks, Peter's ice creams, and fresh vegetables.

(From the Courier Mail in 1931. - who knows more about this business.)
