Homeless Camp burnt out at Glenview

At about 6a.m. on June 18th a number of campervans, cars, and tents have been destroyed in a fire at the Jowarra Park rest area on Steve Irwin Way in Glenview. The rest area, commonly known as Old Daisy’s Place or The Log Cabin Restaurant had become a place for the homeless due the lack of affordable housing in the region.

Some campers were awakened by the sound of exploding tyres on vehicle being burnt in the fire.

A crime scene has been established at the rest area and forensic investigations are under way.

It has been reported by witnesses that the fire was started by one of the residents there after him having an argument with another male over a woman .

A police media release reports that a 27 year old man who was armed with a metal pole was taken into custody a short time later without incident. He was later charged with three counts of arson, two counts of wilful damage and assault occasioning bodily harm and a breach of bail in relation to an unrelated domestic violence matter.

H appeared in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Thursday 19th June and was remanded in custody.

Youth between 5 years and 17years to receive $200 “Play on” vouchers

Every child aged 5-17 will be eligible for a $200 Play On! Voucher. These vouchers can be used for either summer and winter sports. We are also making sure that regional and remote families don’t miss out as there will a dedicated allocation to level the playing field. This program means that more Queensland children will be able to be part of a team, joining their friends in the game, rather than watching from the sidelines.

This is real cost of living relief – backing families and helping more kids stay active, healthy, and involved in the sport they love. It’s one part of the Crisafulli Government's first Budget, delivering for Queenslanders right across the State.

Youth Crime in Queensland

We take a zero tolerance approach to knife crime and making Jack’s Law permanent just makes sense. This law, named in honour of Jack Beasley who lost his life to knife crime, and gives police the power to use hand-held scanners to detect deadly weapons anywhere and anytime in Queensland. It empowers police to detect deadly weapons in all public places. We will continue delivering stronger laws to curb the Youth Crime Crisis

Sunshine Coast Council reschedules the 2025 - 2026 budget

The Sunshine Coast Council has rescheduled the adoption of the 2025–26 Budget to allow additional time to complete a comprehensive financial review.

The revised Special Meeting date is now July 7th, 2025.

This follows the identification of an historical issue in how depreciation has been reported internally to Council, impacting financial statements over at least the past five years. This Council had made a clear commitment to transparency and honest conversations with the community.

Delaying the Budget is not a decision we’ve taken lightly, but it’s the right one, as we want to be sure the financial information we’re relying on is accurate and complete.

While external audits by the Queensland Audit Office had remained compliant, the internal reports presented to Council did not fully reflect the long-term cost of asset ownership and renewal.

Phone: (07) 5429 6750

This has contributed to an inaccurate reporting of Council’s true financial position in recent years.

The amount is in the order of $30 million and this means we will end with a deficit of around $20 million this current financial year.

The new Chief Financial Officer and CEO John Baker are leading the review, with a focus on ensuring the 2025–26 Budget is built on clear, accurate and reliable financial data.

We are putting robust financial controls and reporting mechanisms in place to ensure this type of issue could not happen again

“ Maple Street, Maleny 1940”

Maleny’s Maple Street in 2025 carries a continuous line of traffic and parking spots are at a premium. However in 1940 it was nothing like 2025. As one can see from the photo below the metropolis of Maleny was simply a quiet Queensland country town with motorists able to park where ever they desired.

Oh to return to those days!

On this day in History June 20th

On the 20th June 1790 the Second Fleet arrives at Port Jackson. The Second Fleet was a convoy of six ships carrying settlers, convicts and supplies to Sydney Cove, Australia.

The convicts on all the ships were mistreated, rations were poor and sickness rife.

Of the 1,006 convicts transported aboard the Fleet, one quarter died during the voyage and around 40 per cent were dead within six months of arrival in Australia.

The three ships, Surprize, Neptune, and Scarborough were contracted fro bring the convicts to Australia on behalf of the British government..

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions

Many families doing it tough

“Is it still the land of milk and honey?”

In Queensland personal insolvencies increased in March 2025 with 284 people declared bankrupt. Month on month small business bankruptcies continues to increase and there does not look to be any relief in the near future.

In 2025, the average family in Queensland is grappling with significant economic challenges as the cost-of-living crisis deepens across the state. Essential expenses such as housing, utilities, and food have surged, outpacing wage growth and placing immense pressure on household budgets.

Housing costs remain a dominant concern. In Brisbane, rents have risen by 7.8% over the past year, while electricity prices have increased by 12.7% and are about to have further increases. These escalating expenses mean that many families are allocating over 40% of their income to housing alone, leaving limited funds for other necessities.

Utility bills are also on the rise. The Australian Energy Regulator forecasts electricity increases of up to 3.7% for households in 2025 . Additionally, local councils have also announced significant rate hikes to cover growing operational costs .

Food insecurity is becoming increasingly prevalent. Reports indicate that many low-income families are unable to afford healthy, nutritious food, with some forced to choose between feeding their children and paying for utilities .

The financial strain is taking a toll on mental health. According to The Salvation Army, 69% of respondents reported losing sleep over their financial situation, and 68% could not afford to save for emergencies.

While government initiatives, such as free kindergarten programs and energy rebates, aim to provide relief , many families continue to struggle. Addressing this crisis requires comprehensive policy responses to ensure that Queensland families can achieve financial stability and well-being.

It is important that struggling families start with a financial review of their situation The first step in managing your financial health during a crisis is knowing where you stand and what may need your attention. It is important that families accept the reality of their challenge and handle it quickly as they are close to the problem, however there are many government agencies available to help.

Truthful Jones says And he swears that it 100% true - No Bulls##t”

Truthful says that one day last week he was in Maleny at Maple Street Meats Butchery shop when a dog walks in and the butcher shoos him away.

About 5 minutes later he comes back with $10 and a note saying “2kgs of steak” surprised the butcher reluctantly takes the money and hands him a bag with the meat.

As the dog left the butcher shop, the butcher, Blair closed down the shop and decided to follow the dog. The dog gets to the bus stop in Maple Street and waits. Soon the bus arrives and the dog pulls a ticket out of its collar, gives it to the driver and hops on.

Blair follows him to see what was going to happen. The dog got off of the bus on Balmoral Road and began to walk still not have eaten the meat. Finally the dog walks up to a house over the road from Maleny Cheese factory and sets the meat down.

The dog backs up and charges and slams into the door. He does this about twice. Finally a man opens the door and starts yelling at the dog calling him stupid and retard- ed. Blair finds this horrible so he talks to the man and says “STUPID?! This dog went to my shop, paid for meat and took it on the bus finding his way back home per fectly. HOW IS HE STUPID??!”

The man then replied saying, “ Yes, that’s all great but he forgot the key for the 3rd time this week!”

Morale: Sometimes you just cannot please some people.

Maleny Paint Supplies security dog, Steve has a busy weekend

Many of you who have visited Maleny Paint Supplies shop at 6/14 Lawyer Street, Maleny have met the resident security guard Deputy Dachshund Steve. He always gives a welcome bark when customers arrive.

Last Sunday it was a sunny morning in Maleny. Steve being a determined dachshund decided to paint his little dog house cottage. After all he had plenty of paint in any colour he chose. Even though it was a bit cool he strapped on his tiny overalls and grabbed a paintbrush with his mouth.

Well, he thought today was the big day—I am going to paint my own doghouse.

With a palette of bright blues and sunny yellows, Steve got to work. Standing on his little ladder, he dipped his brush into the paint and swiped broad strokes across the wooden panels. His tail wagged furiously with pride. The birds in his garden that he normally chased, barking furiously chirped encouragement from the trees, and even the neighbour’s dog, Buddy watched in amazement.

Steve painted with care, adding flowers along the trim and a sun over the doorway. He paused occasionally to admire his work and lick off a stray drop of paint from his nose. By the afternoon, the doghouse gleamed with colour and personality. It wasn’t perfect— some lines were squiggly, and one paw-print landed right on the door—but to Steve, it was a masterpiece.

As the sun set, he curled up inside, tail still wagging. It was the cosiest house in the world, not because of the paint, but because it was all his own work. And from that day forward, Stevie was known as the most artistic dachshund in town.

The 1996 Port Arthur Massacre, in which 35 people were killed and 23 injured by a lone gunman, prompted one of the most significant changes to gun legislation in Australian history.

On an ordinary Sunday, the 28 April 1996, 23 year old Martin Bryant entered a tourist complex 100 km south of Hobart, Tasmania, and shot dead 35 people, wounding 18 others. Most people can still remember where they were at that time as this incident shocked Australia to the core!

The Port Arthur Massacre certainly drew attention to the fact that before 1996, Australia’s states and territories had differing laws relating to gun ownership and there was no attempt to ensure that only appropriate people had access to a firearm.

Until that time firearms were the most commonly used weapons with which to commit serious crimes.

In the aftermath of that massacre the federal government, under Prime Minister John Howard, enacted the National Firearms Agreement (NFA), which introduced strict gun control measures. These included a ban on semi-automatic and automatic rifles and shotguns, a national firearms registry, a requirement for genuine reasons for ownership, and a massive government-funded buyback

program that removed over 600,000 firearms from circulation.

The question remains debated: did these measures make Australia safer, or did they simply change the types of weapons used in violent acts? Statistically, firearm-related deaths declined sharply in the years following the implementation of the NFA. Gun homicides fell by more than 50%, and gun-related suicides dropped by over 60% between 1995 and 2006. Furthermore, Australia has not experienced a mass shooting involving five or more deaths since Port Arthur, whereas there were 13 such events in the 18 years prior. These are significant outcomes and are widely cited as evidence that the NFA improved public safety.

However, critics argue that while gun-related deaths declined, overall rates of violent crime—including assaults, stabbings, and home

invasions—did not decrease as significantly and, in some instances, rose. For example, kniferelated violence became more prominent in the years after the reforms. Some suggest that the NFA did not eliminate violence but merely shifted it to other methods.

At about 3:50am on Monday the 1st May, 2000 and Daryl Green, a constable with the Queensland Police attend a disturbance on Hanbury Street, in Brisbane’s Chermside West when an offender, Nigel Parodi walked towards the police vehicle as they arrived and pumped 12 rounds into the officers striking Constable Green twice in the face and shoulder critically injuring him.

Constable Daryl Green after surgery following being shot twice in the face whilst on duty.

On the afternoon of Monday 29 May 2017, Senior Constable Brett Forte, a Queensland Police officer was performing duties as a member of the Darling Downs District Tactical Crime Squad, Toowoomba when he was gunned down with an automatic weapon.

On the 12th December 2022 at Wieambilla in west Queensland two Queensland Police constables, Matthew Arnold and Rachel McCrow, and civilian Alan Dare were shot dead at a rural property. The property's three residents, brothers Gareth and Nathaniel Train, and Gareth's wife, Stacey Train, were subsequently shot and killed by police following a several hour-long standoff.

Since Australians had their firearms taken from them by law there have still been a number of police officers shot, many killed whilst carrying out their duties. Since 2010, 22 police officers in Australia have died on duty.

On the 19th February 2020, Rowan Baxter perpetrated a quadruple murder–suicide in Camp Hill, Queensland, Australia. Baxter fatally burned his 31-year-old estranged wife Hannah Clarke and their three children, Aaliyah, Laianah and Trey, before committing suicide at the scene.

On Saturday 13 April 2024, 40-year-old Joel Cauchi stabbed and killed six people and injured a further twelve in the Westfield Bondi Junction shopping centre in the eastern suburbs of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

How often do we hear about personal shootings and “drive-by shootings” where homes have been sprayed with gunshots while children have slept inside between “warring” criminal organisations such as outlaw motor cycle gangs? Since the 1980s there have been about 100 biker killings across the country and 1,000 shootings.

Australian recent history is littered with multiple murder crimes and whilst many involved the use of firearms but many crimes did not.

In this view, those intent on harming others still find alternative weapons, such as knives, axes, or vehicles.

Yet, the lethality of attacks involving knives or blunt objects is generally lower than those involving firearms, especially semi-automatic weapons. Guns allow for greater distance, speed, and multiple victims, making them particularly dangerous in mass shootings.

Removing these weapons from circulation, therefore, likely reduced the scale and deadliness of attacks, even if violence persisted in other forms.

Another point to consider is that mass shootings are not only tragic but also socially destabilising events. The psychological impact on communities and the political fallout are significant. The absence of mass shootings since 1996 has arguably contributed to a sense of public safety and national cohesion.

That said, some Australians, particularly in rural areas, felt unfairly targeted by the reforms. Farmers, sporting shooters, and gun collectors argued that they were being punished for the actions of one individual. There remains a vocal minority that believes the NFA was a political overreach, with little effect on criminals who were unlikely to follow any law.

In conclusion, while violence in Australia was not eliminated by the removal of certain firearms, the NFA maybe did make the country measurably safer from gun-related deaths and mass shootings, but did it make it safer in general?

Ask the many domestic violence victims what they think about it.

It is a fact that in the 20 years after the passage of gun control laws in Australia there has not been a major mass shooting in Australia. Research from the University of Sydney reveals that because homicides of all kinds (not just shootings) have been on the decline since 1996 it can't statistically be said for sure that gun laws were the catalyst that caused gun-related murders to drop.

It likely did shift the choice of weapons used in some crimes, but these alternatives tend to result in fewer fatalities. The evidence suggests that restricting access to high-powered firearms reduced the deadliest forms of violence, even if broader crime trends were shaped by a complex mix of social, economic, and cultural factors.

From a statistics point of view it appears that those people who really want to have possession of a firearm, although illegally. Will still manage to find one.

Bob Irwin Snr not in favour of crocodile cull

The Australia Zoo founder and father of Steve Irwin, Bob Irwin says Bob Katter’s claims Australia needs to cull its crocodile population are baseless. This comes after it has been suggested that Queensland has seen a giant increase in crocodile numbers in the wild. This war of words comes after Queensland MP Bob Katter suggested that crocodile numbers should be reduced as the reptiles are being found more often in “populated” waterways. There is also concern for Olympians in 2032 as some events are to held in the Fitzroy River in Rockhampton where crocodiles have been seen in recent times.

Irwin family believes that people in crocodile territory need to be ‘Croc-wise’, to reduce risk wherever possible.

I will decide which side is correct when I see a crocodile coming out of my toilet!!!.

Did you Know?

That on June 20th, 1837 - Queen Victoria ascended the British throne following the death of her uncle, King William IV.

Queen Victoria was the only daughter of Edward, Duke of Kent, fourth son of George III. Her father died shortly after her birth and she became heir to the throne because the three uncles who were ahead of her in the succession - George IV, Frederick Duke of York, and William IV - had no legitimate children who survived.

She became Queen at the age of 18 thus beginning a reign of almost sixty-four years, the longest in her nation’s history.

How much battery power do I need for my home?

Purchasing a battery is a big decision and you want to make sure you make the right choice – especially when we’re talking about battery size. At Redback, we get it. It’s difficult to know what battery will work best for your home and your lifestyle.

We always recommend talking with an accredited installer in your area, as they’re fully trained to look at all your individual needs and advise on the correct sized system.

RedEarth’s PowerOasis is a fully integrated, ready-to-run and modular Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) catering for the niche 50-400kVA power range. It has the option to use both the inbuilt solar PV MPPT or AC-coupled solar PV inverters can be added.

Certified Energy Solutions

WE ARE PROUD TO BE A NETCC APPROVED RETAILER

ThWhen thinking about installing a solar system it is important to consider which appliances and utilities use the most energy and when is the best time to use your electricity for maximum efficiency?

Let’s take a look at the typical Australian home…

On average, heating and cooling (or ‘space conditioning’ as researchers call it) use the largest amount of energy – around 40%

of total household energy use. Appliances and technology account for about 25% of household energy use, while hot water systems use 23%. With the shift to energy efficient LED bulbs (which use 80% less electricity than halogen bulbs) lighting accounts for about 7% of household energy use*. The energy consumption of individual appliances depends on their efficiency, and thanks to the government’s Energy Rating Label, consumers can calculate the average energy use of their appliances based on their usage.

Maleny SES looking for volunteers

Maleny State Emergency Service Group is looking for some volunteers to help get our community through the next disaster season.

You can put your desire to get involved to good use and serve our community. An easy way to do that by becoming a State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer.

Active SES members perform a diverse range of functions to respond to local, state and national disasters and emergencies. By joining the SES you may respond to many different types of activations as a result of disasters and emergencies.

An SES volunteer has an opportunity to participate in and develop a variety of emergency and rescue skills, including chainsaw operations, flood boat operations, road crash rescue and land search.

Not only will you be helping your community, you will make some great mates along the way.

Volunteers are given training to ensure that they have enough skills to be able to handle whatever task you need to do..

“1967 - Air Crash 1967”

“Shortly before 10a.m. on Tuesday August 8th, 1967 a crop dusting aeroplane crashed into the home of Phyllis and Cyril Waters on McCarthy’s farm, Maleny ”

No one was injured as there was no one at home at the time and the pilot escaped uninjured. At that time the area where the Maleny High School now sits was used to refuel and reload the crop-duster aircraft.
