Queensland Budget 2025 -2026 done!
The 2025 -2026 Queensland budget has now been released and I can say that I am happy with it. There are targeted cost of living relief as well as structural, long-term measures to put downward pressure on energy prices and ease pressure on rents. Budgets aren’t about numbers, they’re about people. And this Budget is about helping Queenslanders. It lays the foundation for the fresh start we promised.
The Budget is forecasting GSP growth of 2¾ per cent in 2025–26. This Budget secures the infrastructure, programs and services critical to delivering a fresh start for Queensland’s future, with responsible economic management needed for our growing State..
Some of the more important items included: 1600 police recruits with stronger laws and new programs to turn kids away from crime. 15 new schools and $300 in vouchers for education essentials and kids sport.
Three new hospitals and ten major upgrades. More free healthcare than ever before.
A new nation leading home ownership scheme to reduce the deposit gap.
We're determined to give every Queensland kid the best possible chance to start school strong. As part of our first Budget, 60,000 Queensland kids will benefit from free health checks at Kindy.

On this day in History July 4th
On the 4th July 1838 the Huskar Pit Disaster in the Silkstone Colliery in England. In this disaster 26 children drown trying to escape the flooding. It was Wednesday 4th July 1838, a humid, sunny and warm summer day above the pit top, but by 2pm a vicious thunderstorm ravaged the village. Over 300ft underground, around 50 children and 33 coal getters were cutting and moving coal, eager to make up time and money following four days unpaid holiday for Queen Victoria’s coronation celebration.. This disaster leads to the 1842 Mines Act, which banned women and children under 10 working underground.

On line security is vital for individuals to ensure they are not scammed.
In Australia during 2024 and 2025 a number of major companies have been the subject of major scams. Scammers have also attempted to impersonate government agencies and financial institutions, as well as cryptocurrency and investment scams.
According to Scamwatch in 2024 Australian individuals lost more that 318.7 million dollars, and that was only what was reported to that body,
Being aware of online security is crucial in today's digital world. As more of our personal, financial, and professional lives are conducted online, the risks of cyber threats such as identity theft, hacking, and scams have increased dramatically. Without proper awareness and precautions, sensitive information can be exposed, leading to serious consequences including financial loss, reputational damage, and privacy violations.
Cybercriminals often exploit weak passwords, unsecured networks, and phishing emails to gain access to personal data. Staying informed about these threats helps individuals recognise suspicious activity and take action before harm is done. Simple habits such as using strong, unique passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, and avoiding unknown links can significantly reduce risk.
Online security awareness also plays a key role in protecting businesses and organisations. A single employee clicking a malicious link can compromise an entire system. Regular training and vigilance are essential to building a culture of cybersecurity in workplaces.
Ultimately, being aware of online security empowers people to take control of their digital lives. In a connected world where data is constantly shared and stored, staying safe online is not just a technical issue—it's a fundamental part of protecting oneself and maintaining trust in the digital age. Those who collect our personal data have a major part to play in reducing computer crime, but we all have a part to play and simply blaming big business won’t stop computer scams. Computer crime costs us all - more than just cash!!.
Truthful Jones says And he swears that it 100% true - No Bulls##t”
Truthful tells that a person he had met on a holiday to the USA a few years age came to Maleny to stay with Truthful, His name was, Randy and he was a Texan farmer.
Truthful introduces him to Glen, an Aussie farmer and they get talking. Randy goes out to the Darling Downs with Glen where the Aussie shows off his big wheat field. The Texan says, 'Oh yeah, we have wheat fields that are at least twice as large.'
Then they walk around the wheat farm a little, and then Glen shows off his herd of cattle. Randy immediately says, 'We have longhorns that are at least twice as large as your cows.'
The conversation has, meanwhile, almost died when the Texan sees a herd of kangaroos hopping through the field and so he asks, 'And what are those?'
'Glen', the Aussie replies with an incredulous look, 'Don't you have any grasshoppers in Texas.’
Randy looks in dismay.

“Why we recommend Mirka’s Dust Free System”
The Mirka dust free vacuum systems are:
Portable
The Mirka vacuum can be set to be automatically activated when a sander or other attached tool is turned on, meaning it doesn’t need to be in close proximity to the user. The unit can be upgraded to house Mirka cases and cases of other brands on top of the unit, or a workstation can be added to store two sanders and all of their associated abrasives within easy reach.
Durable
All Mirka machines come with a two year warranty, extendable by another year when a tool is registered with Mirka. Mirka abrasives’ amazing dust extraction capabilities prevent them from clogging or burning, which also gives them a greatly extended life.
Time Efficient
Powerful equipment gives powerful results. Speed your students’ sanding time with efficient machines and abrasives. Two sanders can be operated off a single vacuum unit, doubling sanding capacity without doubling the budget.
Dust Free!
Protects the health of staff.
Eliminates the need to vacuum or sweep dust after the job is finished.
Mirka’s dust free sanding system optimises every stage of the sanding process. The system incorporates three main elements. Each can also be used to improve the performance of non-Mirka systems.
Dust Extraction
The Mirka 1230L shop vacuum captures, stores and allows for the safe disposal of potential harmful wood dust and other particulates.
Abrasives
Mirka abrasives are optimised for quick results, excellent dust extraction and are the most durable on the market.
Business Benefits from Dust-free Sanding
Today we are all learning more about the effects and damage that fine dust particles have on our health and wellbeing.
Mirka is the original developer of dust-free sanding, which has since become an industry standard.
Removing dust is the best choice for making your workplace more efficient. A dust-free environment reduces time to completion, meaning fewer manhours for you. Then, you can focus on what is essential: spending more time on the refinishing itself.
Eliminating dust is often very stressful because you need to spend lots of time getting rid of it completely. Not only does dust-free leave your workplace clean, but it also makes sanding stress-free.
The amount of dust entering the lungs or harming skin can be strongly reduced by using an advanced and efficient dust extraction system during sanding, which also lessens the risk of a work related disease or a dangerous exposure.

Winter is a great time to paint!!
With lower humidity levels in Queensland during winter paint tends to dry more efficiently and effectively in the cooler weather
As a result, winter emerges as an opportune time for both exterior and interior painting projects in homes. Avoid waiting for the sweltering heat and high humidity of summer months.
Indoor painting is fine as long as the temperature stays between 10 and 30 degrees celsius and under 70% humidity. It is beneficial to keep good air circulation. It’s important to have a coat of paint dry before the next coat is applied so paint may take a little longer to dry in winter so take notice of paint drying times.

What do we really mean when we say our toilet paper helps build toilets?
We trust that our partner organisations know how to best improve global access to proper sanitation – that means our donation could go to building toilets. To put it into perspective, a child under five dies every two minutes from diarrhoea diseases caused by poor water and sanitation.
Profits from the sale of this toilet paper is used our donation could go to building toilets, but could also mean it supports larger clean water projects.
An accident in your home: Occupier’s Liability
With Tove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny
An accident causing someone injury in your home does not necessarily mean that you as the occupier is liable for that injury. As an occupier you are only liable if an accident is caused by your failure to take ‘reasonable care’ to protect the person being injured.
The key words are ‘reasonable care’. As you may have suspected already there is no hard and fast rule about what amounts to ‘reasonable care’ or lack of such care. It depends very much on the nature of the premises, the type of danger and the reason for entry. An example is a defective staircase in a house would be a danger to most people but would not be a danger to the tradesperson engaged to fix the staircase.
You may think that provided that your visitor has been warned of the danger then this would be suffi cient to protect you from liability. However a warning is not always sufficient to protect you from liability. The occupier’s duty is to take ‘reasonable care’ to protect your visitor from danger –
not simply to warn your visitor of the danger. Sometimes a warning may be sufficient but other times not depending on the type of danger.
What of a person who enters your premises without your permission – a trespasser? The law holds that if you know or you have reason to suspect that a trespasser is on your premises, you have a duty to that trespasser to take reasonable care to protect that person from injury. This duty does vary depending on the circumstances. An example here would be the requirement on you to fence a pool to prevent a child trespasser from being injured or drowned.
Finally, a landlord has a statutory duty, under the Residential Tenancies Act (Qld) 1994, to keep premises in good order and repair. A landlord may be liable if a tenant is injured on the

Before the 12th December 2022 I would bet that 90% of Australians would not have known where the Wieambilla district was in Queensland but that was to change. Two police, Constables Matthew Arnold, 26, and Rachel McCrow 29 and a civilian, were shot and wounded before being killed by their assailants. One of the offenders did have an offence recorded in New South but that record was not available in Queensland.
Anational register of firearms and "apron offenders" (assuming this refers to domestic violence or family violence perpetrators, given the domestic connotation of "apron") would bring substantial benefits to public safety, law enforcement efficiency, and social accountability in Australia. Combining data on firearm ownership and domestic violence offenders into a unified national register could improve risk assessment, prevent violence, and foster a safer society.
Enhanced Public Safety and Violence Prevention
Domestic violence is a significant issue in Australia, with one woman killed nearly every week by a current or former partner. Research consistently shows a strong correlation between domestic violence and firearmrelated deaths. A national register that tracks both legal firearm ownership and individuals with a history of family violence would allow authorities to identify risks more quickly and intervene
proactively. For example, if someone with a history of domestic violence attempts to purchase a firearm, the system would automatically flag the risk, potentially preventing a tragedy.
Improved Law Enforcement Coordination
Currently, firearm registries and domestic violence records are managed at the state and territory level, leading to inconsistencies in how information is stored and shared across jurisdictions. A national register would streamline data into a centralised platform accessible to law enforcement agencies across the country. This would facilitate faster background checks, cross-border investigations, and more effective monitoring of high-risk individuals. Police responding to incidents would also be better informed if they knew whether firearms were present and if an alleged offender had a violent history.
Greater Accountability and Transparency
A national system would hold both firearm owners and offenders more accountable. Responsible gun owners would benefit from standardised rules and clearer procedures, while those with a record of violence would face consistent restrictions regardless of which state or territory they live in.
Transparency would be improved for the public as well—particularly in assessing the government’s commitment to reducing domestic violence and preventing gun misuse.
Supporting Prevention and Early Intervention
Integrating information on firearm ownership with records of domestic violence could support social services in early intervention. Authorities could monitor patterns—such as repeat offences or escalation in threats— more effectively and refer families to support before situations become deadly. This data-driven approach would also help tailor See next Page
prevention programs, improving their effectiveness and targeting resources where they're most needed.
Data-Driven Policy Development
A national register would also serve as a powerful tool for research and policy-making. Accurate, consolidated data on firearm ownership and domestic violence incidents would help policymakers understand trends, assess the effectiveness of interventions, and design evidencebased laws. It could also contribute to public awareness campaigns by highlighting the intersection of gun ownership and domestic abuse.
Conclusion
Whilst the establishment of a National Firearms / Domestic Violence Register would not in itself
ensure total protection for all. But by establishing a national register of firearms and domestic violence offenders in Australia represents a critical step toward a safer and more coordinated approach to preventing harm.
It would empower police, social services, and policymakers with the tools they need to act decisively and effectively. By closing the information gaps between jurisdictions and better identifying risk, such a register could save lives and build stronger, safer communities.
A register would also modernise most firearm management processes, including permit and dealer portals, which would become digitised as part of a National Firearm - Domestic Violence Register for quicker referencing of offenders.
Fancy a good shot of Pissky?
How do you think that you would like the idea of drinking human urine? Well, one British distiller, James Gilpin has distilled a range of whiskies using the sugar-rich urine of type 2 diabetics. As higher concentrations of sugar can be found in the urine of those who have diabetes the process is possible and is being distributed under the name “Gilpin Family Whisky,”.
To create his unique product, Gilpin first filters the urine using techniques similar to how our mains water is purified. The remaining large crystal-shaped sugar molecules are then removed and purified again, before being combined with a mash stock to speed up the fermentation process. Once added to a clear alcohol spirit, whisky blends are mixed into the liquid to give the drink its colour, taste and viscosity. The final product is then bottled and to give a more personal touch, labelled with the name and age of its original ‘donor’.
According to The Whiskey Exchange the finished product is something more like (admittedly pissbased) vodka with ‘whisky blends’ added or or those American whiskies that used to mix bourbon with grain vodka.
This new whiskey was to be introduced at a design event in London and a film festival in Manchester. There is no record of any such presentation of such whiskey taking place so one cannot attest to the veracity of this distillation.

Did you Know?
That on July 4th 1918Aussie soldiers fought in the Battle of Hamel in World War I. The Battle of Hamel in World War I was a small-scale, brilliantly successful attack made by elements of the Australian Corps and United States (US) troops with British tanks and air support.
It was the first set-piece operation planned by Lieutenant General John Monash since taking command of the Australian Corps the previous month. Under Monash's strategy, infantry, tanks, artillery and air support worked together on the battlefield for the first time under Australian command. In just 93 minutes, the Allies captured 1,600 enemy soldiers. Around 1,380 Australian and US personnel were killed or wounded in the battle. It was the first time that Australians and Americans fought together on a battlefield. The planned attack became a model for innovative tactics, which the Allies repeated on largerscale advances from 8th August and helped to end the war in November 1918.

Maleny SES looking for volunteers
Maleny State Emergency Service Group is looking for some volunteers to help get our community through the next disaster season.
You can put your desire to get involved to good use and serve our community. An easy way to do that by becoming a State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer.
Active SES members perform a diverse range of functions to respond to local, state and national disasters and emergencies. By joining the SES you may respond to many different types of activations as a result of disasters and emergencies.
An SES volunteer has an opportunity to participate in and develop a variety of emergency and rescue skills, including chainsaw operations, flood boat operations, road crash rescue and land search.
Not only will you be helping your community, you will make some great mates along the way.
Volunteers are given training to ensure that they have enough skills to be able to handle whatever task you need to do..
