Maleny District Park Concept Plant
Sunshine Coast Council has developed a draft concept plan for Maleny District Park and the next step is asking the community if it hits the mark.
The draft concept plan for Maleny District Park sets the blueprint for the park’s long-term multi-staged development which will be subject to future budget approvals.
The community’s ideas and feedback have been integral to developing the concept plan for the park - Now we’re seeking feedback on the draft concept plan to ensure we’ve got it right for those who live, work and play here.
The district park has been divided into four distinct areas, each offering a variety of different recreational experiences.
‘The Lookout’ along North Maleny Road will be an ideal location to take in the views across the precinct with a viewing spot and picnic facilities proposed.
‘The Bails’ near the old Fairview Milking Bails proposes a small playground, open lawn area and several picnic locations which could be a great space for gathering during the day or to view the stars at night.

Phone: (07) 5429 6750
Web: https://www.conceptsystems.com.au/
Next to Cloudwalk Estate, ‘The Hill’ takes advantage of the natural topography of the area for a proposed mountain bike skills course, a ‘mega’ slide and viewing places over the wetlands and forest.
To the south of ‘The Hill’, ‘The Hub’ is proposed to be the key activity area with a toilet block, fenced dog exercise area, large kick and throw space, barbecue picnic facilities, multi-sports courts and a large basket swing.
The four different areas would be connected by an expanded footpath and trail network and would ultimately be serviced by conveniently located parking.
You can view the draft concept plan and provide your feedback by visiting the web site by the 1st June, 2025 at: https://haveyoursay.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/maleny
You can also drop into the ‘Meet in the street’ popup session to meet the design team in person from 9am to 1pm on Saturday, May 24, outside Queensland Country Bank, 28 Maple Street, Maleny. Your input will help finalise the plan and progress it towards stage 1 delivery. The finalised concept plan will be shared with the community in late 2025.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions
A Federal Electio

“A Donkey vote is a waste of your rights”
Well, the 2025 Federal election is over and we now and like it or not we now know the build of our Federal Government for the next period.
Records from the Australian Electoral Commission reveals that approximately 5% of all votes, yes one in twenty votes were declared informal and thus are not counted because the voter deliberately spoiled the vote in one way or another.
The idea of a “wasted vote” in federal elections often arises from the belief that casting a ballot for a thirdparty or losing candidate has no practical effect.
Votes that don’t count don’t contribute to the overall say in how the future of Australia is shaped. This perception discourages voter participation and reinforces the dominance of two major parties, limiting political diversity.
Many feel their voices are drowned out if they don’t support a front-runner, especially in non-competitive districts or states. However, this viewpoint overlooks the broader value of voting as an expression of civic duty and political preference.
Every vote signals public opinion and helps shape the political conversation, even if it doesn’t alter the immediate outcome. Labelling a vote as “wasted” risks undermining democracy by promoting apathy and discouraging dissenting views. Instead of blaming voters for choosing alternative candidates, criticism might be better directed at a system that often fails to represent minority perspectives.
True democratic engagement means valuing all votes, regardless of their effect on the final tally. Reform efforts like ranked-choice voting aim to address this problem by making more votes count toward meaningful representation.
Your personal vote is precious and every vote should count, even if the total is not enough to get your candidate “over the line”.
You would not throw away a bar of gold - don’t waste your vote either.
Truthful Jones says And he swears that it 100% true - No Bulls##t”

Truthful’s elderly uncle in his 80’s, an Irishman came out to visit Truthful at Maleny.
Whilst here Paddy decided that he needed to work. He went down to Bunnings at Caloundra and asked for a job.
The manager, intrigued, asked, “Do you have any sales experience?”
The man nodded confidently, “Yes, sir. I was a salesman back home in Ireland.”
The manager liked his enthusiasm and hired him. “You start tomorrow. I’ll check in after we close to see how you did.”
The first day was tough, but the old man persevered.
At the end of the day, the manager came to check on him. “So, how many customers did you sell to?”
The man smiled and said, “Just one.”
The manager was furious. “One?! Our salespeople average 20 to 30 customers a day! How much was the sale for?”
The old man replied, “$121,237.65.”
The manager’s jaw dropped. “What on earth did you sell?!”
The old man explained, “Well, first, I sold him a small fishhook. Then a medium fishhook.
Then a larger one. After that, I sold him a fishing rod. He mentioned he would like to go fishing off the coast, so I took him to the boat section, and he bought a twin-engine Boston Whaler. Then he realised that Truthfull’s Honda Civic couldn’t tow it, so I sold him a truck.”
The manager, still in shock, asked, “A man came in for a fishhook, and you sold him a boat and a truck?!”
The man grinned; “. No sir, he actually came into buy tampons for his wife. I just said your weekend is shot you might as well go fishing.
Next day, the old man got a promotion.

An accident in your home: Occupier’s Liability
With Tove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny
An accident causing someone injury in your home does not necessarily mean that you as the occupier is liable for that injury. As an occupier you are only liable if an accident is caused by your failure to take ‘reasonable care’ to protect the person being injured. The key words are ‘reasonable care’. As you may have suspected already there is no hard and fast rule about what amounts to ‘reasonable care’ or lack of such care. It depends very much on the nature of the premises, the type of danger and the reason for entry. An example is a defective staircase in a house would be a danger to most people but would not be a danger to the tradesperson engaged to fix the staircase.
You may think that provided that your visitor has been warned of the danger then this would be suffi cient to protect you from liability. However a warning is not always sufficient to protect you from liability. The occupier’s duty
is to take ‘reasonable care’ to protect your visitor from danger –not simply to warn your visitor of the danger. Sometimes a warning may be sufficient but other times not depending on the type of danger.
What of a person who enters your premises without your permission – a trespasser? The law holds that if you know or you have reason to suspect that a trespasser is on your premises, you have a duty to that trespasser to take reasonable care to protect that person from injury. This duty does vary depending on the circumstances. An example here would be the requirement on you to fence a pool to prevent a child trespasser from being injured or drowned.
Finally, a landlord has a statutory duty, under the Residential Tenancies Act (Qld) 1994, to keep premises in good order and repair. A landlord may be liable if a tenant is injured on the premises, the injuries occurred as a result of the landlord’s failure to

repair defects and the landlord knew of the defects.

With the Maleny Show upon us at the end of May one can only wonder at what featured at past shows, particularly country shows throughout Australia over the past century.
Back in the pioneer era, people flocked to the tent shows when they arrived in town. Tent shows were a highlight of almost every agricultural show across Australia from the late 1800’s until about 1970.

Tent shows have long been a vibrant part of the cultural landscape at Australian agricultural shows. These travelling performances— ranging from vaudeville acts boxing troups and magic shows to circus-style entertainment and educational displays—have entertained generations of rural Australians. While the nature of the acts has evolved over time, the tradition endures as a nostalgic and distinctly Australian experience that blends entertainment with community connection.
The origins of tent shows in Australia date back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when entertainers travelled across the country, following the show circuit. Agricultural shows were ideal venues: they drew large crowds from surrounding districts, offering a rare social and
recreational outlet for isolated rural communities. Tent shows became a fixture, offering lowcost entertainment to people of all ages. A single show might include comedy, musical numbers, juggling, puppetry, and audience participation—often all within a single performance.
Part of the appeal lay in the intimacy. Audiences sat under canvas, just metres from the stage, with no elaborate lighting or technology to distract. Performers relied on charisma, wit, and skill to hold attention. Shows were often fastpaced, interactive, and family-friendly. This grassroots form of theatre was accessible, flexible, and
adaptable to the particular crowd and community.
Some tent shows became legendary in their own right. Wirth’s Circus, Sole Bros. Circus, and the Tivoli tent shows were household names in their time.
The boxing tents of Jimmy Sharman which ran between about 1911 and late 1960’s was most likely the best known.
It is a little remembered fact that Jimmy Sharman junior was a well

Drawing a crowd to Sharman’s Boxing Tent

known rugby league player for and captain of Western Suburbs Rugby League Club in the 1930’s. Another little remembered fact is that a popular boxer with Sharmans over time was Sir Douglas Nicholls, later Pastor with the Churches of Christ in Australia and even later the Governor of South Australia.
Smaller, independent acts—magicians, bush poets, strongmen—also carved out loyal followings. Many of these performers became regulars on the show circuit, returning year after year to rural towns where locals knew them by name.
Beyond pure entertainment, tent shows served a deeper function: they brought people together. In regions where farms were far-flung and social life was sparse, these shows were a focal point of the annual calendar. They were a place to laugh, marvel, and share an experience with neighbours and strangers alike.
For children, especially, they left a lasting impression —often remembered more vividly than the livestock judging or woodchopping competitions.
Who could forget Ram Chandra. A fearless showman, Ram's journey was a captivating tale of courage, passion, and a profound connection with some of the world's most dangerous snakes.
In recent decades, traditional tent shows have declined, challenged by changing tastes, tighter regulations, and the rise of digital entertainment. But they haven’t disappeared.
There’s a resilience to the tent show format—it doesn’t need much to succeed, just a stage, a crowd, and a compelling act. That simplicity is part of its charm. In a high-tech world, the tent show remains a reminder of a time when entertainment was personal, live, and a little rough around the edges—in the best way.
Even in today’s society Tent Shows continue to

Some agricultural shows still feature tent-based performances, often as a tribute to the past or reimagined with a modern twist. Puppeteers, comedy acts, animal educators, and variety performers still set up under canvas to carry on the tradition.
entertain, but maybe in a different format. The Maleny Agricultural Show has a number of “tent shows”, sometimes not in tents, but they still follow.the customs of the original tent shows. One example maybe the “Crack-Up” sisters who have been featured a number of times. They can still raise laughs, not only with adults, but with the younger generation as they share joy and the spirit of Outback Australia and recount stories to make you laugh, learn, think and connect with average Aussies..
Today, as agricultural shows work to stay relevant, there’s growing recognition of the cultural value of tent shows. They’re not just sideshows—they’re living history, and for many, still the heart of the show-ground.
With the Maleny Agricultural Show upon us spare a thought to those who passed before us and the complete enjoyment they got from the travelling Tent Shows, something from another time!

The Battle of the Malacca Strait ended in British victory and the sinking of the Japanese heavy cruiser Haguro.
The Haguro had been operating as a supply ship for Japanese garrisons in the Dutch East Indies and the Bay of Bengal since 9 April 1945.

Maleny SES looking for volunteers

Maleny State Emergency Service Group is looking for some volunteers to help get our community through the next disaster season.
You can put your desire to get involved to good use and serve our community. An easy way to do that by becoming a State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer.
Active SES members perform a diverse range of functions to respond to local, state and national disasters and emergencies. By joining the SES you may respond to many different types of activations as a result of disasters and emergencies.
An SES volunteer has an opportunity to participate in and develop a variety of emergency and rescue skills, including chainsaw operations, flood boat operations, road crash rescue and land search.
Not only will you be helping your community, you will make some great mates along the way.
Volunteers are given training to ensure that they have enough skills to be able to handle whatever task you need to do..
