Safer Internet Day is recognised every year on 7 February.
This year marks 20 years since the initiative was launched, and we have seen technology advance in leaps and bounds since 2003! While there are so many benefits, the growth of digital technology has exposed us to many real-world issues.
The statistics surrounding how Aussies have been impacted online in the past twelve months is shocking.
In a recent report, almost half of all Australian children active on the internet were found to have been treated in a harmful or hurtful way, while approximately 30% of teenagers had been contacted by a stranger online.
At the other end of the spectrum, 2/3 adults online have been impacted by activities like scams and data-hacking.
These numbers are on the climb. It is incumbent upon all of us to arm ourselves with the know-how to stay safe online.
If you – or someone you know – have been impacted by some of these issues, visit ID Care, a local service. They can provide specialist advice and support: https://www.idcare.org/ https://www.esafety.gov.au/newsroom/whats-on/safer-internet-day-2023 https://issuu.com/Maleny-Grapevine-Community-News
