“dogs causing some trepidation”
Some users of the Maleny Show-grounds are disappointed that the Sunshine Coast Council is seriously considering restricting their use to just one portion of the grounds.
The grounds are very popular as an off leash dog walking area.
Maleny dog owners are demanding the Sunshine Coast Council backs down on a proposal to restrict the area available as an “off leash” dog walking area to the top corner of the show-grounds..
This follows a number of complaints about the poor behaviour of a small number of dog owners. There have been problems with a few dog owners who are not picking up after their dogs or persist letting their dogs go down to the horse area when there are horses there, which is very dangerous.
Dogs in Maleny group members said the proposals were overreach, with the response outweighing the poor behaviour of a small number of owners. Another ground user said that for any agreement over issues in this area needs all dog owners to be fully responsible for their dogs, including picking up their dog poo.
The areas are also used for sports such as cricket and soccer and leaving dog deposits on the ground is a health hazard.
A spokesperson for the Maleny group, Maleny Dog Owner Community Inc, Mr. Bo Williams has recently met with Sunshine Coast Councillor for the Maleny area, Mr. Winston Johnston to attempt to reach a solution that would satisfy both sides of this dispute. The show-grounds being a large area provides a large zone for big and small dogs to run freely and owners to meet on a regular basis.
Today everything is recorded on a cameras somewhere. With the development of digital photography costings of photos has been reduced to almost nothing, but yesterday you had to consider the cost of film and the processing.

Mr Williams continued, “We should add more signage, because there is basically no signage to educate people on what to do… common sense things like closing the gates, picking up your dog poo, and similar signs to keep prompting people.”
If disrespectful dog owners are fined they should remember not to complain about receiving the fine as it is to benefit all users.

Councillor Johnston said that he was committed to an off-leash dog park in the precinct.
