Read all About it - Maleny! A series of themed historical information boards, depicting a brief illustrated history of Maleny, are now on display in "Selectors Green”, the new open space developed on the Maleny District Sport and Rec Club’s lease on the Community Precinct.

developing the concept of the new park since 2016, starting work in earnest in 2018. Volunteers on the project team are from Maleny Lions, the Rotary Club of Maleny, Maleny Apex, Maleny RSL, the Friends and Maleny Garden Club and have been working hard together, under the guidance of Council, who funded the new boards and other aspects of the park. Incidentally, the boards are situated on the selection of 160 acres made by John Hankinson on 6th July 1880 on Portion 1276, Parish of Maleny. The next time you are walking by Parklands Drive on the Precinct, why not take a lovely diversion through Selectors Green and read about the story of how Maleny came to be?

The Friends of Pattemore House were invited by the combined community group team that created Selectors Green to provide the information and boards, so Penny Edwards and Gail Denver from the Friends took on the task. Spending more than a year diligently researching, recording and fact-checking the area’s history since the arrival of Europeans to the Blackall Range, they also selected images and designed the six boards, each illustrated with early photos, maps and letters.

Photographed with the new historical boards are their creators Penny Edwards (let) and Gail Denver from the Friends of Pattemore House

Selectors Green speci cally acknowledges Maleny’s rst selectors, particularly with reference to the rst hardy women who arrived on the Range since 1875. Still to come are a series of individual stories about some of the Range’s earliest women who were also living on the rst selections in Maleny, with a row of native trees planted in advance along Parklands Drive, under which their stories will be displayed. The Selectors Green project team put together by MDSRC has been

Maleny Historical Memories with Desley Malone On 12th Nov 1878, 143 years ago, Isaac H Burgess selected 790 acres (Portion 98, Parish of Maleny) on top of the Blackall Range. The Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve was part of his selection and this was the rst European selection in the Blackall Range area. Isaac's biography "A Life of Mixed Fortunes: Isaac Hudson Burgess, his life and contribution to the settlement of Landsborough and Maleny” has recently been published, by Tania Burgess. It’s a really interning read about a very determined man. http://www.malenyhistoricalmemories.com/.../ isaac_hudson

Where’s Sam, the Travelling Jackeroo from Maleny?

S

tuck in Darwin waiting out the wet season, thanks to a major repair job that Slim the tractor’s motor requires. On 20th November, Slim’s radiator was being replaced but the problem ran much deeper than Sam knew at the time - with the motor needing to be pulled apart, delaying Sam's planned departure from Darwin by at least several weeks, possibly longer, especially if it’s discovered that the block is cracked.

”Stay tuned and we’ll keep tracking him as he delivers his tins - you can follow Sam’s great blog at https://www.facebook.com/thetravellingjackaroo Photo Below: Sam delivering Dolly’s Dream collection tins to Darwin pubs.

Meaning by the time it’s repaired it will by then nd Sam having to safely leave too late to avoid the big wet. So it looks like he'll be staying in Darwin for the 2021-2022 wet season. But as we’ve come to know, the ever-resourceful Sam devised ways to turn this unplanned delay into yet more fund-raising opportunities for one of his chosen charities - Dolly’s Dream. Sam put "Operation Butter y Drop" into place immediately, and so far, he reports it’s been a resounding success, with several pubs right across Darwin who now have Dolly's Dream collection tins on their counters and who are now all contributing to the fundraising effort. There are still many more venues jumping on board, with Sam quipping “If I’m going to be in Darwin for a while longer, I’m going to make sure we raise as

Watsons Garage -

Monday, 22 November 2021

a further history

Following on from last week’s story about the closure of Watsons Garage, we heard another gem about the Watson’s Garage history recently from Chris Brooker. He recalls that Watsons had the contract for carting butter from Maleny to Landsborough Rail for many years.

In 1965 molasses carting started; Nev drove over 1 million kms in 10 years, covering areas between Bundaberg, St George and Lismore. After a few years Doug also joined him in the molasses business but they sold their trucks in 1990 and “retired”.

Chris said “I remember hitching a lift with Geoff/ Jeff Wills (the driver) in the old Inter. It was just only crawling at top of the range, with the truck in low gear for descent”.

Peg Horsnell also recalled the school buses, saying “They would put planks across the back of the bus for our seat like school forms. There was one with a red engine and that was the one we had to catch to and from school and there was a green one that went to another part of Maleny.

This prompted us to look at Nev Watson's eulogy, written by his daughter Sherry Watson, and recorded at Desley Malone’s Maleny Historical Memories page, where we found this extract about the services offered by the Watsons: WL Watson and Sons Maleny, held a Mail contract (Landsborough/Maleny) 1944 – 1980 a record term according to the Postmaster General. In addition they had haulage contracts with the Maleny Butter Factory, taking butter to the railway station in Landsborough. Nev Watson was up at 4 am to load 8 ton of 56 lb boxes of butter per day. Fresh food, beer and any farm produce was carted and delivered to shops and farms in the region. Pubs in Landsborough, Maleny and Mapleton got their grog supplies via Watsons. In 1962 the petrol bowsers were installed at the garage and a mechanical/panel beating/spray painting service started.

Sometimes the driver would let one of us sit in the front seat with him. There was no such thing as seatbelts and I remember it was a rough ride over some of the dirt roads in outer Maleny ! I also remember the taxi which was the only transport available to us when we lived on the dairy farm, sometimes Mum would go into town via the “ cream truck “ . Ah the memories! The Range Croquet Club - Maleny “The grass is growing.” doesn’t have the same gravitas as “Winter is coming.” To association croquet players, however, it rings the same sort of warning bell. Rolls and take- offs pull up short, the rush that you thought would take your roquet ball to the front of hoop is well short; then, when you try to compensate, you overhit and your carefully laid plans turn to a swamp of indecision and uncertainty. Recent rain has brought on a ush of activity by our grass. We are trying to adapt. Thursday 18th saw Sarah Widin limited to a very creditable 19 against a motley crew of Kath Smith, Ken Barker, and ll-in Wallace Roy, who stood in for Ken when he had to leave early.

Start times on play days, Thursday, and Sunday, have changed because of hotter weather. They are now 2.00 for 2.30 p.m. Play days: Thursday and Sunday 2.00 pm for 2.30. Contact Sarah for other days. Please arrive at 2 pm for games to be arranged by 2.30. Coaching: is available on Saturday mornings at 8 am For details contact, or Contact Sarah Widin President 0417 640 704. There is also much information about the club on the web site below.

Together they could only manage 11 hoops. Well done Sarah. Sally Adams and Helen Andrews teamed up to squeeze a tight win against Helen Uhlmann and Lynette Evans, 8 – 6. The Helens seem to relish hard-fought close encounters. Is it something in the name?

Maleny Commerce has just celebrated 35 years of serving Maleny Businesses and the Maleny Community!

On Sunday 21st four people had the multi-coloured lawn to themselves. Wallace has been spraying for oxalis and using vegetable dye to mark his progress. Lynette was meticulous against Stuart Craig winning 9 – 4, while Sarah was unlucky to lose to Ken 14 – 16. The attached photo shows Lesley Johnstone (Headland Buderim) who won the division 3 event of our November tournament, receiving the shield from Sarah.
