No longer would todays housewives even contemplate using one of these washing appliances!

Mosquito-borne viruses on the rise

Following the extraordinary rainfall events of recent times throughout our area it is likely to translate into an increase in mosquito numbers and therefore, an increase in mosquitoborne infections.

Cases of dengue fever, Ross River fever and Japanese encephalitis would not be unexpected. Queensland Health reports that they have had 124 cases of dengue fever confirmed so far this year and that is more than four times higher than in the first quarter of the previous five years. It has also been reported that two people have died from Japanese encephalitis during this rain event.

Whilst most of those cases have been in the northern parts of the state there is no reason why South East Queensland will not also see similar rises. Any mosquito can carry these illnesses and can pass it on to humans through bites.

Queensland Health advises people that to avoid mosquitoborne viruses, cover exposed skin with loose, light-coloured clothing, use insect repellent containing DEET or Picaridin, and eliminate mosquito breeding sites around your home. To eliminate breeding grounds ensure that there are non empty containers holding stagnant or standing water.

Ensure rainwater tanks have screens with holes less than 1 millimeter to prevent mosquito entry and ensure that windows and doors are fitted with insect screens in good condition

Anyone feeling unwell with high fever, headache, skin rash, neck stiffness, joint or muscle pain anyone with these symptoms should seek medical advice.

Have the intensive rainfall totals gone for now?

Whilst the heavy rainfalls may have gone for the time being it is a sure bet that they will soon return to our area. Maleny, rainfall total for March 2025 was 546.7mm with a daily average of 18.2mm, and the wettest day was March 10th with 220mm of rainfall.

With this total amount of rainfall our area is bound to have some flooding and road closures.

Queensland Health warns that floodwater can be contaminated by sewerage, animal and household waste and may contain bacteria that pose a risk of soil-borne diseases and other infections, including skin infections, diarrhoea and conjunctivitis.

It may initially be some fun to play in flood waters, it is just another reason to follow the saying “If it is flooded them forget

Sunshine Coast from 1950 to the 1980’s in photos!

If you’ve ever wanted to step back in time and explore the Sunshine Coast from the 1950s to 1980s, this is your chance.

Local photographer Bill Robinson’s collection of 26,000 photos has been added to the Sunshine Coast Heritage Library for all to enjoy.

The collection gives us insights into the region during this period of changing landscapes, tracking our transition from small coastal and rural communities to booming developments as we grew into a major tourist destination.

The images document the Sunshine Coast’s cultural and social history, and important aspects of the natural and built environment, from the 1950s through to Bill’s retirement in 1984.

This large-scale digitisation project started three years ago and now everyone is able to access these photos online. Photography plays a crucial role in helping us understand the past, documenting events, places and people to offer a glimpse of what life was once like, along with significant moments and cultural insights.

Bill Robinson and his wife Phyllis Breadman moved to the Sunshine Coast after they both finished

service as photographers in the Royal Australian Airforce after WWII.

Living in Tewantin, they gradually extended their business throughout the district, eventually visiting Nambour one day per week.

Bill supplied one photograph per week to the Nambour Chronicle (from around the mid-1970s to 1984) and it was regularly the only photograph in the paper.

As the Nambour Chronicle evolved, photographs were used more often and Bill attended functions and gatherings to take photographs on the paper’s behalf.

These negatives, donated to Nambour Library in 1990 by the Nambour Apex Club, have been gradually digitised over the course of 30 years. Three years ago a digitisation plan was developed and funded by Sunshine Coast Council’s Arts and Heritage Levy.

Men too need to look after their mental health

Men’s mental health matters too and on April 4th I joined the Grab Life By The Balls team at Your Mates Brewhouse in Warana for some good company and good conversation. Their Mateship Movement is all about bringing blokes together, because connection is key.

No: “I am not going Bald”

I finally had the opportunity to explain my shiny pate to the House of Representatives in full and to publicly thank all of the donors that supported this worthy cause of my behalf. I am supporting the Leukaemia Foundation.

Grab Life By The Balls proactively increases the quality of boy's and men's health and well-being thus creating a healthier and happier world of inspired, empowered and on-purpose men.

And what better place to do it than at a local success story, Your Mates Brewing Co. - fresh off another big win as one of Australia’s Top 10 Craft Beers!

I hope I inspired some MPs to learn more about the Leukaemia Foundation. Police to increase traffic patrols over Easter 2025!

Easter is a particularly dangerous time on our roads.

Sunshine Coast Road users, including those around Maleny can expect to see police anywhere and at any time using high-visibility patrols and covert operations these Easter holidays to keep Queenslanders safe.

This operation will run from April 4 to April 21, covering the entire school holiday period.

Data shows that serious crashes can be significantly reduced when drivers recognise and avoid the ‘Fatal Five’ behaviours: speeding, drink and drug driving, not wearing seatbelts, fatigue and distraction.

Need a Roadworthy Certificate?

Maleny Service Centre have a Licenced Roadworthy Inspector on the premises and we know only too well what it takes to make your vehicle safe and roadworthy.

All vehicles (including trucks, motorbikes and trailers) must have a Safety or Roadworthy Certificate (RWC) if being sold, registered for the first time or being re-registered in Queensland. Registered Vehicles cannot be solid without a RWC.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions

Corporate greed leads to “Trump’s Tariffs”

Modern Globalism has brought about the “Trump Tariff Showdown”

Whilst it might first appear not to be a local matter the trade wars over the application of tariffs by the U.S. Government effects every one of us directly and personally. If you don’t believe me just have a look at any superannuation policies that you have and over the next few months the further rises in everyday costs. These effects will be profound as we live into the immediate future. These effects have been directly caused by corporate globalism and greed.

Whilst to a degree there has always been some globalism of trade, right back to when people first started to trade goods with others. However it was supercharged after 1944 when created the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) were created.

The World Trade Organisation worked to reduce trading barriers between countries and facilitate a more uniform global market and to maximise company profits for the powerful multinational corporations.

Labour costs have made goods produced in third world countries with very low labor costs, such as India various Asian and Pacific rim countries and China, competitive to products manufactured in advanced economies such as North America, Europe, Australia and a number of others.

To minimise costs, companies outsource production to countries with lower wages and weaker labor protections. This often results in unsafe working conditions, child labour, and the suppression of workers' rights.

As a result by the late 1960’s and early 1970’s Australian manufacturing was in a serious decline decline. Australia became little more than a giant mine in search of riches for everyone else. Jobs and work skills were lost and a whole generation of workers were thrown on the “scrap heap” and unemployment grew

It is time to bring manufacturing back to Australia, not only for financial reasons, but for the security of our country. Perhaps Trump’s tariffs will assist.

Truthful Jones says And he swears that it 100% true - No Bulls##t”

Truthful says that his sixteen year-old grandson came home with a brand new Ford F150. His father and I looked at the truck and asked, “Where did you get that truck?!”

“I bought it today,” the grand- on says.

“With what money?” Truthful asks.

Truthful knows what a new F150 cost.

“Well,” the grand-son says, “this one cost me just fifteen dollars.”

The boy’s father looks at him like he’s crazy.

“Who would sell a truck like that for fifteen dollars?” he says.

“It was the lady up the street,” says the boy. “I don’t know her name – they just moved in. She saw me ride past on my bike and asked me if I wanted to buy her F150 for fifteen dollars.

“Oh my Goodness!” says the father. “Maybe she’s mentally ill or has Alzheimer’s something. Truthful, you better go see what’s going on.”

So Truthful walks up the street to the house where the lady lives and finds her out in the yard calmly planting petunias.

He introduces himself as the grand-father of the boy to whom she had sold a new Ford F150 truck for fifteen dollars and asks to know why she did it.

“Well,” she says, “two days ago my husband left on a business trip. Yesterday I got a phone call from his boss and found out that he really ran off to Hawaii with his secretary and doesn’t intend to come back.”

“Oh, my goodness, I’m so sorry,” Truthful says. “But what does that have to do with my grandson and your truck?”

“Well, this morning he called and told me he was stranded because he got robbed of his wallet with all his credit cards and cash. He told me to sell his new F150 and send him the money. So I did.”

What do we really mean when we say our toilet paper helps build toilets? We trust that our partner organisations know how to best improve global access to proper sanitation – that means our donation could go to building toilets. To put it into perspective, a child under five dies every two minutes from diarrhoea diseases caused by poor water and sanitation.

the

The 1950’s and 1960’s were the Baby Boomer years, pre-birth control, and families of four and five children were the norm. The streets of our neighbourhood were filled with children. As there was always lots of gossip to be traded mothers spent hours taking to neighbours over the back fences.

At the beginning of the 1950’s our family moved into a new house in Holland Park, Brisbane. It was a new ‘estate’, not that there was such a term in those days. There were dirt roads, still some paddock to be developed where there grew that last remnants of bushland where kookaburras and magpies and other native animals lived. All the houses in the street were new and all the families were new to the area. Even though the houses were new they still had their toilets in the back yard and were cleared by Hunter Brothers night car staff weekly.

Brisbane in the 1950s, had the reputation of being ‘Australia’s biggest country town’. On visiting the Brisbane City Hall clock tower small people were amazed just how tall it was and “just how did it keep standing up?”

Friendships soon developed and the various families worked together on weekends to establish their yards and gardens. Mums, Dads and kids all chipped in to get the “job done”. Usually on the Saturday night a fire was lit in one of the backyards and a B.B.Q was soon on the go.

Within a few months every yard was somewhat trained with garden edging, concrete driving tracks and walking paths to the front door and to the clothes line out the back. Not that all families had a vehicle, almost none did.

Growing up in Queensland, Australia, during the 1950s and 1960s was a truly special experience, marked by a simpler, slower-paced way of life that fostered a strong sense of community, adventure, and appreciation for the great outdoors.

Mums and dads would chat over the front fence.

These were the decades when kids roamed free, the milkman delivered fresh bottles to the

doorstep, the Courier Mail was delivered each day, neatly folded into a square for easy throwing from the delivery car.and life was lived largely in the sunshine.

One of the most treasured aspects of childhood in Queensland during this era was the incredible freedom children enjoyed.

It was a time before excessive parental supervision, when kids were expected to be outside from morning until dusk, only returning home for meals.

Neighbourhoods were safe, and everyone knew each other, which meant that children could explore, ride their bikes for miles, and spend entire days at the local creek without parents worrying too much.

There was a certain trust in the community, a belief that neighbours would look out for one another’s children.

The great outdoors was an essential part of childhood. Queensland's warm climate meant that kids could enjoy outdoor activities all year round. Summer afternoons were spent at the local swimming hole or the beach, where the waves provided endless entertainment. Sun safety wasn’t the concern it is today—kids would run around barefoot, wearing nothing but a pair of

shorts or a simple sundress. Cricket matches in the backyard or on the street were a daily ritual, and even the smallest suburban block had room for a game of footy. Bushland adventures, tree climbing, and fishing trips were all part of a typical Queensland childhood.

Entertainment was simple but deeply fulfilling. The valve radio was very big in our household. It was a large floor-standing unit and occupied the head of our dining room table so that the family could listen to the news and serials during dinner.

Some of the popular serials included; The Australian serial; Blue Hills which run during the day for the mothers. Later in the day programs such as Hop Harrigan, The Argonauts Club, The Adventures of Superman, Gunsmoke, The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, Dragnet, The Jack Benny Program, Perry Mason, Guiding Light, The Lone Ranger.

‘Eating out’ was a rare family

was only available in black and white and had limited programming. Many of the programs were directly copied from the successful radio serials. Most kids found their fun outside or in community activities. Saturday matinees at the local cinema were a highlight, where children would crowd in to watch cowboy flicks, cartoons, or adventure serials.

Drive-in cinemas were also wildly popular, offering families a chance to enjoy a film from the comfort of their cars, with kids often falling asleep in the backseat before the movie ended. There were many youth who got into the drive-in free by hiding in the boot of their car, until drive in staff became aware of this habit..

School life was strict yet formative. Many Queensland schools had a no-nonsense approach to discipline, with corporal punishment still being common. The uniforms were crisp, and the schoolyard was a place of both

kilometres to get there. School fairs, sports days, and dance socials provided cherished memories for many.

Food was wholesome and homecooked. Families would sit down together for dinner every night, with meat and three vegetables being the standard fare. Milk was delivered fresh in glass bottles, and bakeries made real bread, without preservatives. The local corner shop was a favourite haunt, selling everything from newspapers to mixed lolly bags filled with freckles, cobbers, and aniseed wheels for just a few pennies.

Life was slower, families were closer, and people made do with what they had. There was no internet, no social media, and few modern conveniences, but there was a richness in face-to-face relationships and an unspoken bond among neighbours.

The joy of growing up in Queensland during the 1950s and 1960s was found in the little

Did you Know?

What do you know about what was the drawcard to the establishment of the Maleny area?

Did you know that Maleny was founded in 1878 meaning that it was established only 90 years after the First Fleet arrived in Sydney Cove to establish the first British colony.

Maleny and surrounds were originally subtropical rainforest with desirable timber trees, such as the red cedar trees, and these were a draw card for settling the area.

The area is now mainly a tourist region.

Maleny SES looking for volunteers

Maleny State Emergency Service Group is looking for some volunteers to help get our community through the next disaster season.

You can put your desire to get involved to good use and serve our community. An easy way to do that by becoming a State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer.

Active SES members perform a diverse range of functions to respond to local, state and national disasters and emergencies. By joining the SES you may respond to many different types of activations as a result of disasters and emergencies.

An SES volunteer has an opportunity to participate in and develop a variety of emergency and rescue skills, including chainsaw operations, flood boat operations, road crash rescue and land search.

Not only will you be helping your community, you will make some great mates along the way.

Volunteers are given training to ensure that they have enough skills to be able to handle whatever task you need to do..

“1950

The Maleny State School in the 1950 was situated in Cedar Street where the kindy is now located. The site was too small and In 1958, eight buildings, water tanks and drinking troughs were shifted from where the Kindy and former Guide Hut now stands, to the Primary School in Bunya Street.

The office was on the left with Mr Vince Keleher & Mr Milton Alcorn’s classrooms. The teacher in the photo was Miss Janet McRobert who was a teacher in the High School section. The new school was officially opened in 1959 by the Premier at the time, the Hon. G.F.R. Nicklin. .
