There used to be a saying; “a penny for your thoughts”. Well, no longer does it apply because in 1966 decimal currency became legal currency in Australia.

It was first minted in Australia in 1911 with the last minted in 1964.

The memories of the ANZACs lives on

On Monday April 21st about 12.10p.m. a woman passenger from Mt Gravatt in Brisbane was killed when the Nissan Micra that she was a passenger was struck by a a red Porsche Macan on The Bruce Highway at Palmview. This incident resulted in a six car accident.

The driver of the Micra, a 22-year-old man from Strathpine, sustained minor injuries.

The driver of the Porsche, Bradley Donald Towle 41 years of age from Tewantin then allegedly exited the Porsche, shot a 62-yearold man who had stopped to help, and stole his vehicle and left the scene of the accident.

He then drove south along The Steve Irwin Highway towards Landsborough when he crashed that stolen car near the Twinnies' Pelican and Seabird Rescue facility. It is alleged that Mr Towle then stole another car at gunpoint.

Ms Helen Powers from the Twinnies' Pelican and Seabird Rescue facility ran towards the crashed cars to help anyone injured when a male person pulled a gun and said to her, “I’m going to shoot you”.

He then hijacked another car driven by a young female and drove off after threatening her and her parents who were passengers in the vehicle.

At about 12:48 pm police located and arrested Mr Towle on Steve Irwin Way.

They recovered a firearm from his vehicle. This firearm had a bullet in the chamber, loaded and cocked.

Mr Towle was hospitalised under guard at the Sunshine Coast Hospital for observation.

On being released from hospital he was charged with 15 offences including armed robbery, acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm, and dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death.

Other charges include possessing dangerous drugs and the unlawful possession of a firearm and failing to remain at the incident and driving on a suspended licence. He was also charged with driving while affected by an intoxicating substance.

Tackling Bullying in schools

Bullying in schools is a concern for all parents as bullying was a scourge on society.

Bullied students can have lower school attendance, lower academic achievement, and lower selfesteem.

The Queensland Government is delivering a nationleading plan to tackle bullying in Queensland schools.

These new initiatives will provide support to schools to prevent, respond to and reduce bullying:

A rapid support squad to fly into schools.

Additional funding for chaplains and student wellbeing staff in hundreds of additional schools.

A dedicated support hotline for parents and carers.

An expert anti-bullying taskforce to provide critical advice to schools.

New professional development resources to upskill teachers and staff.

These measures are being put in place as part of the government’s commitment to drive down the number of students impacted by bullying and responding to serious incidents with the swift action such a serious issue deserves.

It is important that everyone plays their part in stamping out bullying in all forms.”

Domestic Violence is a scourge on our country

As the chair of Parliament’s largest-ever inquiry into Family, Domestic and Sexual Violence, I fought hard for real change - calling for more DV specialists, a national register, and action on tech abuse.

An elected Dutton Coalition Government will invest an additional $90 million to strengthen prevention, support survivors, and crack down on perpetratorsbecause Labor’s broken promises are costing lives.

This is personal for me, for Peter Dutton and for all of us who have seen the legal system let down victimsurvivors.

We won’t stop fighting for concrete action to protect women, families, children, and all victim-survivors.

The cost-of-living crisis has made it harder for families to participate in sports, depriving kids of valuable opportunities to learn, connect, and stay active.

If we want more girls, kids, and families involved in sports, the Government must support communities like Maleny by building the facilities needed to get Fisher active.

An

Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions

A Federal Election is once

again upon us!
“The

people of Australia lose when politicians make decisions designed to get themselves reelected rather than for the good of the country”

One of the most valuable things that you possess is a truely independent vote. Unfortunately, many people do not realise that importance. Many people from other countries where voting is not independent are jealous of what we in Australia possess.

A true democratic vote embodies the principle that every person’s voice matters equally, regardless of wealth, status, or background. In a genuine democracy, voting allows individuals to influence decisions that shape their lives, from local policies to national leadership. It offers a peaceful means to express desires, challenge authority, and demand accountability from those in power.

The value of a true vote extends beyond the ballot box. It cultivates a sense of agency, reinforcing the idea that individuals are not passive subjects but active participants in their communities and nations. When each vote is respected and counted fairly, it strengthens trust in institutions and fosters social stability. Without this trust, governments risk losing legitimacy, and individuals may feel powerless or disenfranchised.

Moreover, the act of voting is a reminder of the struggles endured to secure this right. Many fought—and continue to fight—for universal suffrage, fair elections, and transparent governance. Honouring that sacrifice by voting helps preserve hard-won freedoms for future generations.

In short, a true democratic vote empowers the individual, safeguards liberty, and sustains a just society where every citizen has a voice in shaping their collective destiny

Remember:

The results of voting has consequences. Make your vote without emotive responses. Don’t be pressured by somebody else to vote in a direction that you are not happy with. Are you voting in the best interests of Australia in general into the future.

Don’t forget to cast your vote!

Truthful Jones says And he swears that it 100% trueNo Bulls##t”

Truthful’s cousin, an Irishman came out to visit Truthful at Maleny. Whilst here Paddy decided to go to Brisbane on the train. He caught the bus from Maple Street and travelled to the Landsborough Rail Station. When the train arrived heading to Brisbane he got onto the train and sat down opposite another male passenger.

This person was an Englishman. He was seated near a very attractive female.

Suddenly the train went through a tunnel, and as it was an old-style train, there were no lights in the carriages, and it went completely dark. Then there was a kissing noise and the sound of a really loud slap.

When the train came out of the tunnel, the attractive woman and the Irishman were sitting as if nothing had happened, and the Englishman had his hand against his face as if he had been slapped there.

The Englishman was thinking, “The Irish fella must have kissed the woman, and she missed him and slapped me instead.” The woman was thinking, “The English fella must have tried to kiss me and actually kissed the Irishman and got slapped for it.”

And the Irishman was thinking. “This is feckin great, to be sure. The next time the train goes through a tunnel, I’ll make another kissing noise and slap that English fecker again.”

The Answer May Surprise You

Often a topic of great conjecture between roof restoration and paint companies is the topic of repainting of terracotta roof tiles.

Dealing with difficult surfaces such as unglazed, glazed and vitrified terracotta roof tiles and ensuring an enduring, lasting serviceable finish has been a challenge in the terracotta roof restoration industry. The common misconception that these types of roof tiles cannot be coated is now indeed a myth.

Nutech Paint has been a tried and trusted manufacturer of premium roof coatings for almost 50 years. Whilst other paint companies and terracotta roof restoration businesses shy away

from committing to refinishing unglazed, glazed and vitrified terracotta roof tiles, our wealth of formulation development knowledge has now made this possible.

Nutech Elite Terracotta Primer has been specifically formulated to provide superior adhesion and long term performance over properly prepared unglazed, glazed and vitrified terracotta roof tiles. Used in conjunction with any of the Nutech Paint top coat roof finishes, such as NXT Cool Zone, TileFlex, Flexi-shield and Nuflex, Nutech Paint can provide long term durability, with guaranteed performance.

An accident in your home: Occupier’s Liability

With Tove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny

An accident causing someone injury in your home does not necessarily mean that you as the occupier is liable for that injury. As an occupier you are only liable if an accident is caused by your failure to take ‘reasonable care’ to protect the person being injured.

The key words are ‘reasonable care’. As you may have suspected already there is no hard and fast rule about what amounts to ‘reasonable care’ or lack of such care. It depends very much on the nature of the premises, the type of danger and the reason for entry. An example is a defective staircase in a house would be a danger to most people but would not be a danger to the tradesperson engaged to fix the staircase.

Web Address: http://eastonlawyers.com.au/

You may think that provided that your visitor has been warned of the danger then this would be suf fi cient to

protect you from liability. However a warning is not always sufficient to protect you from liability. The occupier’s duty is to take ‘reasonable care’ to protect your visitor from danger – not simply to warn your visitor of the danger. Sometimes a warning may be sufficient but other times not depending on the type of danger.

What of a person who enters your premises without your permission – a trespasser? The law holds that if you know or you have reason to suspect that a trespasser is on your premises, you have a duty to that trespasser to take reasonable care to protect that person from injury. This duty does vary depending on the circumstances. An example here would be the requirement on you to fence a pool to prevent a child trespasser from being injured or drowned.

Finally, a landlord has a statutory duty, under the Residential Tenancies Act (Qld) 1994 , to keep premises in good order and repair. A landlord may be liable if a tenant is injured on the premises, the injuries occurred as a result of the landlord’s failure to repair defects and the landlord knew of the defects.

Take care everyone! Easton Lawyers 07 5494 3511 Monday to Friday between 08:30 and 17:00 AEST.

Pope Francis died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88 at his residence in the Vatican's Casa Santa Marta.

It would have been with much sadness that the world read about the death of Pope Francis on Easter Monday April 21st, 2025. His death on what is the most important christian day of the year could be seen as a sign from the Lord welcoming him home!

Pope Francis was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on 17 December 1936 in Buenos Aires, Argentina and was one of five children. He took on the name Francis in memory of Saint Francis of Assisi when he was ordained as Pope.

Pope Francis followed the Jesuit Society of Jesus and was not only the first Pope elected from this Catholic Society, but was the first non-European Pope since 731. He was elected as the Supreme Pontiff on 13 March 2013, the 266th Pope.

Pope Francis was a longtime advocate for LGBTQ+ and divorced Catholics. His reign has been defined by humility, inclusiveness, and a relentless pursuit of social justice.

those reforms pleased many Catholic followers, especially those of the higher ranking church bureaucracy.

One of his sayings was “We priests are not the bosses of the laity (lay people).” He changed

“the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor” as a moral call to action.

Pope Francis’s legacy may be best understood not through policy shifts or doctrinal changes, but in the culture he has fostered—one of encounter, dialogue, and mercy. His efforts to build bridges rather than walls, both within the Church and with the wider world, may well endure as a guiding light for future generations of Catholic leadership. His papacy has been a call to conscience, urging the world to see the sacred in the suffering and to act with love.

how Catholics talked to one another, and what issues they focused on.

Whilst this is written by a noncatholic it cannot be denied that Pope Francis has made a profound change to the Catholic Church. It was often said that he “was a great reformer” within the Catholic Church and not all of

Francis has worked tirelessly to refocus the Church’s priorities toward the marginalised. He has consistently advocated for the poor, refugees, and the environment, coining the term

Pope Francis also attempted to reform the often rigid structures of the Vatican itself. He pushed for greater financial transparency and accountability, aiming to root out corruption that has plagued the institution for decades. His curial reforms and efforts to decentralise some powers to local bishops' conferences suggest a

more collegial and less hierarchical vision of Church governance.

He had hoped that his reign would be the opening of a new chapter for Catholicism in the modern world. However, the Vatican, ensures that even with the best of intentions, the Pope does not stray far from the church’s own interests of affluence and influence.

Many of his moves often were met with criticism from within the Vatican.

Pope Francis attempted to be closer to other religions, especially with Islam. In 2019 he made a joint declaration with the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar in Abu Dhabi to promoted peace, tolerance, and coexistence.

Pope Francis has set in motion a transformative vision for the Catholic Church, but many of his boldest aspirations remain works in progress. His legacy will likely be judged not only by what he accomplished, but also by the unfinished tasks he leaves to the future.

One of those unfinished tasks was the ordination f women. He did in fact officially open several lay

It's not your job to solve problems other people create.

ministry roles to women, though women had served in many of them unofficially for years, but he always fell short of approving the ordination of women.

It is little known that since the 1970’s some sections of the Catholic Church in Eastern Europe have been ordaining women as priests. As these ordinations became known to the Vatican those sections of the church were excommunicated. Since those days the church has decreed the penalty of automatic excommunication against anyone "who attempts to confer a sacred order on a woman”.

To many Pope Francis was widely seen as one of the most consequential Popes of recent times: an unpredictable leader who took office at a time of crisis, and unafraid of upsetting traditionalists – but also far from the simplistic progressive figure sometimes portrayed in secular accounts.

How one views Pope Francis’ legacy will depend on that person’s view of the Catholic Church and their views of that Churches doctrines.

May he rest in Peace.

Just a bit of history PRESBYTERIAN GARDEN PARTY.

Even if that person is a family member, their problems are their problems!

On Wednesday (May 29th 1940) a very successful garden party was held in the Maleny Presbyterian Church grounds. The gate takings amounted to £5, and in addition very brisk business was done at the jumble stall. The gardens were gay with marigolds and bowls of marigolds and bowls of poinsettia were placed about the lawn.

The winners of the various competitions were: Nurse Lccke (tape walking). Mrs. W. Helland and Mrs. R. C. Burnett (advertisements).

A dainty afternoon tea was served by members of the Ladies'Guild.

How much battery power do I need for my home?

Purchasing a battery is a big decision and you want to make sure you make the right choice – especially when we’re talking about battery size. At Redback, we get it. It’s difficult to know what battery will work best for your home and your lifestyle.

We always recommend talking with an accredited installer in your area, as they’re fully trained to look at all your individual needs and advise on the correct sized system.

RedEarth’s PowerOasis is a fully integrated, ready-to-run and modular Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) catering for the niche 50-400kVA power range.

It has the option to use both the inbuilt solar PV MPPT or AC-coupled solar PV inverters can be added.

Certified Energy Solutions

WE ARE PROUD TO BE A NETCC APPROVED RETAILER

What will our homes look like in the future? How important will self-sufficiency be? And what role will renewable power play in shaping them?

These are the kind of questions that are taking centre stage as we look towards the future of planning, policy, lifestyle and even suburbia.

The next iteration in this evolution is power generation and power

storage as our sense of self-containment increases.

Evolving technology such as RedEarth’s Private Power Plant – which allows households to engage in wholesale electricity trading will also create the potential for an extra income source.

Australians are more predisposed to energy conservation, to generating power themselves, to being more sustainable and environmentally conscious. Give us a call now to see how we can help!

Maleny SES looking for volunteers

Maleny State Emergency Service Group is looking for some volunteers to help get our community through the next disaster season.

You can put your desire to get involved to good use and serve our community. An easy way to do that by becoming a State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer.

Active SES members perform a diverse range of functions to respond to local, state and national disasters and emergencies. By joining the SES you may respond to many different types of activations as a result of disasters and emergencies.

An SES volunteer has an opportunity to participate in and develop a variety of emergency and rescue skills, including chainsaw operations, flood boat operations, road crash rescue and land search.

Not only will you be helping your community, you will make some great mates along the way.

Volunteers are given training to ensure that they have enough skills to be able to handle whatever task you need to do..
