ANZAC Day is a day for Australians to remember the 103,000 lives lost in service and to reflect on the impact of war on families and communities.

Today we would not be able to survive without at least one, but most likely more cups of Expresso Coffee each and every day.

The first espresso machine in Australia, according to the Massoni family, was installed by Rinaldo Massoni at the Café Florentino, Burke Street Melbourne in 1928. “Caffè espresso” was first introduced at the 1906 Milan Fair.

The memories of the ANZACs lives on

ANZAC Day holds a special place in the hearts of Australians, both new and old! Australians see this day as a powerful reminder of courage, sacrifice, and unity. It’s not just a commemoration of those who served at Gallipoli in 1915, but a day to honour all Australian and New Zealand servicemen and women who have served our nations with bravery and commitment.

Each year on April 25th Australia pauses to reflect on the stories of those who came before us—ordinary people who showed extraordinary strength. As they attend attend the dawn service, standing in silence with others, there is a strong feeling of the weight of history and the deep respect our country holds for its heroes.

ANZAC Day is also about gratitude. It is about the freedom and peace we enjoy today because of the sacrifices of those who put the sovereignty of Australia before themselves. We should all strive to live in a way that honours their legacy—with integrity, resilience, and a sense of responsibility to their community.

Lest we forget.

What do we really mean when we say our toilet paper helps build toilets?

We trust that our partner organisations know how to best improve global access to proper sanitation – that means our donation could go to building toilets. To put it into perspective, a child under five dies every two minutes from diarrhoea diseases caused by poor water and sanitation.

W W 1 saw the introduction of motorised vehicles for war!

Before the First World War, the horse was the main means of moving supplies, equipment and troops. British motor vehicles played a crucial role in World War I, evolving from requisitioned civilian vehicles to purpose-built tanks and armoured cars.

The British relied heavily on motor transport for logistics and even on the battlefield, adapting civilian vehicles and developing specialised military vehicles. Key vehicles included the Rolls-Royce armoured car and the British heavy tanks, such as the Mark I, which revolutionised military tactics.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions

A Federal Election

is once again upon us!
“The

people of Australia lose when politicians make decisions designed to get themselves reelected rather than for the good of the country”

Well the date has been set as the 3rd May 2025 to select the next federal government for Australia. Hopefully this brings an end to the cat and mouse games about the when where and why of the 3035 federal elections. The lead up is like a kids game. When politicians make decisions based primarily on securing reelection rather than serving the nation's best interests, serious problems can arise. One major issue is short-term thinking. Leaders may prioritise policies that deliver immediate, visible benefits to voters, while neglecting long-term challenges like climate change, infrastructure maintenance, or education reform. These problems require sustained attention and investment, but their benefits are not always immediately apparent, making them less attractive to politicians focused on winning the next election cycle.

Another problem is the encouragement of divisiveness. Politicians seeking re-election often appeal to their base by fuelling partisan divides, rather than working toward consensus and unity. This erodes trust between different political groups and damages the fabric of democratic society. It can lead to gridlock, where important legislation is stalled simply because compromise is politically risky.

Economic consequences also arise. Policies designed to please voters—like tax cuts without corresponding spending reductions— can balloon national debt and threaten financial stability. Similarly, popular but unsustainable social programs may be expanded without considering future costs, creating burdens for the next generation.

Constant campaigning weakens government credibility. When citizens perceive that leaders are more concerned with polling numbers than principled governance, faith in democratic institutions declines. Voter cynicism grows, political participation shrinks, and talented individuals may shy away from public service altogether. Ultimately, when personal political survival outweighs national interest, the entire country pays the price. Strong, futurefocused leadership is essential for a nation's long-term health and prosperity.

Voter cynicism says that when one has voted politicians take no further notice until the next election.

Truthful

Jones says And he swears that it 100% trueNo Bulls##t”

Truthful tells us that his neighbour, a lady 90s who became a sort of local celebrity because she had recently gotten married. Journalists from the local news paper decided to interview her.

The interviewer asked questions like how it was to be a newlywed in her 90s.

“This isn’t my first husband, so it’s not much different than the others,” she replied with a smile.

“Oh? How many husbands have you had?” the interviewer inquired.

“This one will be my fourth,” she replied. ”I was married in my 20s to a banker, then in my 40s to a circus performer. After that I married a preacher.”

“What does your current husband do?”

“Oh he’s a funeral director.” The interviewer laughed and then asked how she came to marry these men from such different backgrounds and personalities.

“It always made sense to me,” she replied. “I married one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, and four to go.”

How to care for your timber coated with Fiddes Hard Wax Oil

At

Maleny Paint Hard Wax Oil has be come a favourite coating to use on interior wooden surfaces.

And Hard Wax Oil is Food Safe

Fiddes Hard Wax Oils are a blend of natural oils and waxes which are designed to protect internal timber surfaces. The wax content keeps the oil suspended in the surface of the wood for longer. Unlike film coatings, the pores of the timber are filled, and the timber pores are ‘saturated’ which will allow no room for anything else.

A timber surface that is treated with Hard Wax Oil is resistant to water and dirt because of the saturation. The wax component forms a hard layer, and this layer gets harder over the years meaning maintenance is required less frequently. In contrast to other finishes such as polyurethane or lacquers, timber surfaces that are with Hard Wax Oil can breathe freely and the coat of wax remains elastic so it will not crack, peel, flake, or blister.

Fiddes Hard Wax Oil under normal circumstances needs just two THIN coats. Anything more than this will result in over application and the coating will be weaker not stronger.

Our Wood Surface Cleaner is ideal for furniture and joinery. Simply spray on lightly and evenly, then wipe off with a lint free cloth. Easy!

For timber flooring Fiddes Wood Floor Cleaner is the way to go.

Ongoing maintenance will depend on how the surface is treated so to extend the life of your coating it is important to care for it correctly. Good care and maintenance are the key to keeping your surfaces looking amazing and it is essential to use the correct cleaning products.

It is a myth that ingredients such as eucalyptus, citrus etc are good for cleaning timber. They will in fact help with weakening the coating and reduce the durability and sheen. So please do not use any citrus, eucalyptus, ammonia or caustic based cleaners on your beautifully finished surfaces and floors.

To care for your furniture, we recommend regular cleaning with a microfibre cloth to remove dust and to use the Fiddes Wood Surface Spray. Fiddes Cleaning products are a non-abrasive, rinse free formulation that require no rinsing and will dry smear free.

This is a concentrated 1L size which will maintain the surface and keep your flooring looking just lovely! Dilute 2 capfuls into 4 litres of water and mop those floors. You can

add the mix to spray mops or why not ‘make a batch’ so it’s ready to go!

Fiddes Hard Wax Oil is extremely easy to spot repair. Mask around the scratched boards with painters’ tape, lightly sand with a fine paper and apply a coat of Hard Wax Oil.

For further information watch the video on the Fiddes YouTube Channel demonstrating this at Fiddes Oils

Fiddes now have an Ultra Raw Hard Wax Oil which offers a dead flat-matt ‘raw timber’ effect, with minimal colour change to lighter timber species.

It is formulated to maintain the natural appearance of untreated wood, Ultra Raw Hard Wax Oil retains this lighter tone, counteracting the ‘wet look’ commonly associated with traditional oil, wax or resin based finishes.

Note: It is most effective on lighter timber species. As Ultra Raw contains a degree of white pigment, if working with darker species a test patch is recommended.

The range of Fiddes Hard Wax Oils is tested for Toy Safety and is Food Safe. They are non yellowing and are Quick Drying, about 4-6 hours in correct conditions – and fully cured in 7 days.

Fiddes Hard wax oil clear is available in 4 Sheen levels – Matt, Silk, Satin & Gloss.

Difference Between Joint Tenants and Tenants in Common

About to buy a property, but not sure how to allocate ownership? It’s important to understand how you’re going to own your property. If you’re buying a property with another person, you can own it as joint tenants or tenants in common and this is usually dependant on the relationship between the parties and how you want to own your property.

Joint Tenancy

In a joint tenancy the parties to an agreement for the purchase of property individually hold an undivided equal share of the property. Where both parties purchase the property together, there is no specified percentage as to who owns what. A joint tenant does not have the right to transfer or sell their interest in the property. In order to remove their interest, they must apply to have the joint tenancy severed which will transfer that interest to the other joint tenant.

Furthermore, it should be noted that there can be more than two joint tenants to the agreement although it is most common to see joint tenancy in the form of a marriage like partnership.

Tenants in common

When purchasing as tenants in common it provides each individual to the transaction with a certain percentage of ownership. This can be equal, but also be in other percentages. Each party that owns a share of the property has the right to sell or transfer their interest in the property to a third party. This normally occurs when the purchasers are not associated with each other.

A common example would be where two or more friends decide to go into an agreement to purchase a property. In this case, each person will be able to own a different percentage based on how much they pay

Joint tenants and tenants in common and survivorship

The primary difference is in survivorship depending on which approach is chosen, different parties will get the interest of a party that dies. Under a joint tenancy, because the ownership structure cannot be split and

there are restrictions to transfer the interest, the death of one party will leave their interest with the other existing party or parties

This is different to a tenancy in common, as parties own individual portions of the property These portions will become part of their inheritance upon death and will therefore pass on under their estate.

Conclusion

If you are planning on purchasing a property with another person, it is vital to understand how ownership of the property will your vote!

Whilst WW1 was not the first war that Australia had precipitated in as ANZACS also fought ion the Boer War in South Africa the Gallipoli campaign holds a profound legacy for Australians, shaping the nation's identity through the "Anzac spirit" of courage, endurance, and mateship, despite the campaign's military failure.

With ANZAC day almost upon us it is important that all Aussies reflect on the legacy of Gallipoli which holds a profound and enduring place in Australia's national identity.

Though the Gallipoli campaign during World War I was a military failure due to a combination of factors including fierce Turkish resistance, challenging terrain, logistical problems, and a lack of adequate planning and resources on the Allied side, its significance in shaping Australian culture, values, and historical memory far outweighs the strategic outcomes of the battle itself.

It has become a foundational story in Australia’s national consciousness, symbolising courage, mateship, sacrifice, and resilience.

The Gallipoli campaign began on 25 April 1915, when Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) troops landed on the beaches of the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey, as part of a larger Allied effort to secure a sea route to Russia. The campaign quickly turned into a prolonged and bloody stalemate, with thousands of casualties on both sides. Gallipoli was remembered by its veterans as one of the worst places to serve during the War..

For Australia, a relatively new nation at the time—having only become a federation in 1901—the campaign marked the first major military action in which its forces fought under the Australian flag. Over 8,000 Australian soldiers lost their lives during the eight-month campaign.

Despite the failure of the mission, Gallipoli became a defining moment in the development of Australian national identity. It was seen as the moment when Australia came of age, earning its place on the world stage not

just as a British colony, but as a nation with its own character. The traits exhibited by the ANZACs—bravery, perseverance, and loyalty to one another—were celebrated and held up as the best aspects of the Australian spirit.

This ideal of “mateship,” in particular, became a cornerstone of Australian culture and is still revered today.

The legacy of Gallipoli is most powerfully expressed through ANZAC Day, commemorated each year on April 25. What began as a day of mourning has evolved into a broader reflection on the sacrifices of all Australian servicemen and women. ANZAC Day ceremonies are held throughout the country and even abroad, with dawn services and marches drawing large crowds.

The continued significance of these rituals reflects the deep emotional resonance Gallipoli holds for many Australians.

In addition to shaping national values, Gallipoli has also played a role in Australia's relationship with other nations, particularly New Zealand and Turkey. The shared experience with New Zealand troops forged the enduring ANZAC bond, while respectful remembrance and reconciliation with Turkey have fostered a

unique and symbolic friendship between the two countries.

The words of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the Turkish commander at Gallipoli and later the founder of modern Turkey, expressing honour and peace towards the fallen ANZACs, are often quoted as a testament to mutual respect born from conflict.

In conclusion, Gallipoli’s legacy to Australia is far greater than a historical military campaign. It is a touchstone of national identity, a symbol of shared values, and a point of unity and remembrance.

The spirit of the ANZACs continues to influence Australian society, teaching lessons about sacrifice, unity, and the enduring cost of war.

In 2015 the Maleny Hospital saw the opening of the Maleny Hospital Walk of Remembrance. This memorial walk was created by the Maleny Hospital Auxiliary and the Sunshine Coast Hospital Board.

The Maleny Hospital Walk of Remembrance

commemorates those who served in World War One. The memorial features sculptures and plaques with one of the plaque listing the names of those from the Maleny District who served in World War One.

The hospital itself was a memorial of the men and women who served in WWI, and the Walk of Remembrance is a fitting way for the hospital to mark the 100th anniversary celebrations for ANZAC Day.

The Walk of Remembrance features memorials, sculptures, plaques honouring the individual servicemen who enlisted from this district, stones engraved with the names of those killed in action, gardens, a timber arbour protecting a reflective garden, and entrance pathway.

“We’ve also received significant support from the Maleny community including local artists Tohm Hajncl (of Amber Leaf Landscaping) and stonemason Wayne Markwort who have been instrumental in this development.” Said Mr Mal Brough MP, Federal Member for Fisher who officially opened the Memorial Walk.

Maleny State Emergency Service Group is looking for some volunteers to help get our community through the next disaster season.

You can put your desire to get involved to good use and serve our community. An easy way to do that by becoming a State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer.

Active SES members perform a diverse range of functions to respond to local, state and national disasters and emergencies. By joining the SES you may respond to many different types of activations as a result of disasters and emergencies.

An SES volunteer has an opportunity to participate in and develop a variety of emergency and rescue skills, including chainsaw operations, flood boat operations, road crash rescue and land search.

Not only will you be helping your community, you will make some great mates along the way.

Volunteers are given training to ensure that they have enough skills to be able to handle whatever task you need to do..
