LET TER FROM THE HEADMASTER

WELCOME TO THE WINTER E D I T I O N O F C R Y S TA L H I - L I T E S ! It is hard to believe we are about to complete the first semester of this school year. It wasn’t too long ago that we welcomed a record 765 students back into the building. Since then, the energy and enthusiasm in the school have been palpable each day as our students learn, grow and enjoy all that Malden Catholic has to offer! I trust this Crystal Hi-Lites Winter Edition, which includes our annual report, finds you and your family well. Malden Catholic continues to enjoy unprecedented growth. Our enrollment has grown by almost 70% over the past three years. Our student retention rate has grown to 98% over the past two years. This past fall, we also welcomed 220 freshman students, the largest in our school’s history. Plus, with 355 girls currently in our Girls Division, MC is the largest girls 9 - 12 program in Massachusetts! As Matt O’Neil ’97, our Director of Admissions often says, “There is no better time to be a student at Malden Catholic!” This message has been delivered to over 400 families that visited this fall for small group presentations and semi-private tours at our open house events. This is an increase in attendance of 13% from the previous year. With the tremendous effort our Admissions team has invested in the future Class of 2026, we are anticipating another very strong year for incoming students. We are taking many steps to fulfill the many facets of our strategic plan and unfold Malden Catholic’s bold, exciting future. Phase II of our construction for the new performing arts facility and chapel is scheduled to be complete by the end of February. There are several amazing stories about Tom ‘66 and Olivia McDonough and Paul and Margaret Chisholm in this issue of Crystal Hi-Lites that share more information regarding those who contributed generously to these projects. They were truly instrumental in supporting MC and ensuring our ability to complete these transformative projects. We are currently focusing our strategic discussions on the building we own across the street at 50 Crystal. We may soon reach our maximum enrollment capacity and look to 50 Crystal Street to play an essential role in the allowing Malden Catholic to maintain its position as one of the top Catholic schools in New England. Our success this year has been primarily due to those who partner with us. In the pages of this Crystal Hi-Lites, you will see the names of several individuals who have made investments and have created a huge difference – a Malden Catholic difference. Thank you to all our generous benefactors this past year who have provided tuition assistance to so many MC students. You have made our transformation possible. I am sure you will agree, there is no better time to invest in the mission of Malden Catholic! Happy New Year!

Thomas (’66) and Olivia McDonough The lights dimmed and the curtain opened to storm and thunder! The 2016 Lancer Drama production of The Tempest, under direction of Brother Ron Santoro, launched the audience into a world of Shakespearean magic and remarkable high school acting. Later in the show, Prospero’s famous musing that, “We are such stuff as dreams are made on,” softly drifting through the chamber, seemed almost an invitation to imagine the dreams that had populated the theater over its almost fifty years. Here was the scene of hundreds of life-enriching events and ceremonies: Masses, prayer services, Joe Hayes extravaganzas, student council election speeches, National Honor Society inductions, Honor Roll presentations, special-speaker assemblies, Open House Admissions gatherings, athletic awards recognitions, and, of course, dozens of theatrical productions. For generations of young men, this was the place for moments of pride, moments of thanks, moments to dream. Brother Ron, though, was not dreaming, but praying – praying that the lights would stay on and that the sound system would work! The infrastructure was long past reliable. Thankfully, his prayers paid off, and the audience enjoyed a great show. They exited past well-worn seats, showing the age of forty-eight years of use. Our

6

auditorium was the last “untouched” space at 99 Crystal Street, a holdout through years of upgrades and renovations elsewhere inside and outside the building. The need was clear, but somehow other priorities always managed to take precedence. Enter Thomas ’66 and Olivia McDonough! Through their great generosity the auditorium would not only be renewed but re-imagined. New generations of young men and now young women would enjoy the shaping magic of the arts in their lives in a space wonderfully created just for that purpose. Dance, drama and music! It would all happen in the Thomas and Olivia McDonough Performing Arts Center, a state-of-the-art theater with stadium seating and two adjoining arts classrooms outfitted for rehearsal and performance needs. Tom and Olivia’s kindness to Malden Catholic is hardly new. Through a long history of scholarship support and as $750,000 benefactors in the Essential Malden Catholic Campaign, they have been inspiring models of goodness. Their new gift continues a tradition of remarkable philanthropy. Tom explains, “We have historically provided financial support to MC for scholarships and capital campaigns. Our motivation to support the new performing

arts center is informed by the personal experience of one of our daughters and our belief in the value of the performing arts. Our daughter was in theater from elementary school through college (even as a math major). We saw the enrichment and enjoyment that came to her because of the opportunity to be involved in the theater. Secondly, we feel that students who participate in the arts are enriched by the experience. It carries over into their studies, their sports, and the full enjoyment of their entire educational experience. It was with this in mind that Olivia and I were pleased to provide the financial resources to construct the new performing arts center at Malden Catholic.” Born in Chelsea in 1949, the son of a policeman, Tom called Somerville home for his first twelve years. Then, his family settled along the Fellsway in Malden, where he and younger brother Paul (MC’68) joined the many other neighborhood kids who found the local Catholic education a smart and practical choice. Tom recalls, “The reason I attended Malden Catholic was rather practical. My family moved to Malden when I was 12. Until then I had always attended public school. My first year in Malden I went to the public junior high. We discovered that all the families in our neighborhood attended Catholic school, and we felt, too, that it would be the best choice for us as well. So I enrolled in Immaculate Conception School. Upon leaving grammar school, I had just a short walk to MC, which at the time was on Highland Avenue.” Tom was a member of one of the last classes to complete the Malden Catholic experience at Highland Avenue. He remembers the tight knit community, the camaraderie among students, most of whose names he can still easily recall, the rigor, discipline, and expectation of performance. Principal Brother Robertus, C.F.X., McDonough says, “put a footprint on the student body, sometimes literally”! His memories, though, of time spent at MC are no longer especially of particular moments or events. Rather they weave in a retrospective maturity that recognizes the structures in place for learning, the transformational culture of a Catholic education, the opportunities for individual and communal engagement in sports and activities, the relationships among students and staff, and the ethos of success. Following graduation from Malden Catholic in 1966, Tom attended Northeastern University, majoring in Business Administration. Tom and Olivia met as undergraduate students at Northeastern. Following graduation, Olivia enrolled in Boston College and graduated with a Master’s degree in special education. She went on to teach blind children who were mainstreamed in public schools. Now married 48 years, Olivia and Tom raised daughters Alison, Meghan, and Amy. As proud grandparents, too, they have played no small part in spoiling 5 granddaughters. Tom and Olivia now divide their time between homes in Sarasota, Florida and Dennis on Cape Cod. Tom has been a longtime industry leader in the field of managed healthcare and employee benefits. In 1998 he joined Coventry Health Care (Bethesda, MD) as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, overseeing all of Coventry’s health plan operations. He was at the helm in that role in 2003 when Barron’s financial news publication named Coventry at the top of its list of 500 top-performing companies in the nation. In 2005, Tom was appointed Coventry’s President, a position held through 2008. Before joining Coventry, Tom served as Chief Executive Officer of Uniprise (Hartford CT), a division of United Healthcare, providing health benefit services to large multi-state employers.

Services Corporation (Columbus, OH) and President of Jardine Group Services Corporation (Albany NY), an insurance brokerage company specializing in brokerage, administrative services for large corporations, affinity groups and associations. Recipient of our 2010 Malden Catholic Lifetime Achievement Award, Tom is currently a partner with Guidon Partners Investments, Washington, DC. He also serves on the board of several companies and is Chair of the Board of the D’Amore McKim School of Business at his college alma mater, Northeastern University. Tom reflected for us that how one achieves success in life becomes much clearer when one can look back at the pathways that led to the present and to consider those factors that influenced the path. “The journey,” he says, “in large measure is influenced by the foundations you establish early in your life. Family values, educational opportunities, mentors, and sometimes a bit of luck. MC was part of that foundation for me. It wasn’t clear to me then, but in hindsight it is now.” Realizing that Malden Catholic had been a blessing in his life, Tom and Olivia are eager to avail its unique opportunities to others: “Malden Catholic is a gem in the midst of the city. It offers young men and women a superior educational opportunity under the guidance of an experienced leadership team, faculty, and coaching staff. Parents can expect their students to graduate from MC not only with a quality Catholic education, but also as quality individuals who are well prepared for the next challenge in their lives. It is therefore essential that we all support the institution not only to perpetuate the opportunity for others, but frankly to give back for the blessings we received from attending MC. I’ve been fortunate to have achieved some success in my career. I believe it is my personal obligation to give back and say thank you to MC for helping me establish the foundation to reach my potential.” The magic of their kindness will now provide Malden Catholic with a sparkling new Performing Arts Center that will shape the imaginations and inspire the creative talents of generations of Lancers to come! In theater, and in life, we know, the players come and go. Shakespeare reminds us with world-weary wisdom that,

All the world’s a stage, And all the men & women merely players; They have their exits & their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts… “As You Like It” Malden Catholic will be forever grateful that Tom and Olivia have been no mere players in the life of the School. Their loving kindnesses over many years have deeply enriched the lives of our students and will do so well into the future! We are abundantly thankful that the parts they have chosen to perform have been a shaping magic!

Prior to Uniprise, McDonough was President of Harrington

L ANCERS OF GOLF Cheers to Lancers of Golf! A sell-out crowd of over 130 MC parents, alumni and friends gathered on September 23 at the Bradford Country Club for the 35th Annual Malden Catholic Classic. It was a perfect day for golf with great company and enthusiasm that could not be dampened by the brief unexpected downpour that appeared as golfers headed to their first hole. Returning champions Dr. Bruce Doyle P ’21, and his team finished first with -16. The tournament also provided a unique opportunity to celebrate the legacy of the late Carl Mata ‘67. Carl’s widow, Maureen (Gordon) Mata GC ‘69, his sons and beloved friends from MC and GC 1969 were in attendance.

LLP; Rockland Trust; Arthur DeBenedictis, CPA; Paul Gillespie, Esq. ’58; the Undefeated MC 1965 Football Team; and Malden Catholic Hockey 2021 - 2022.

The generous support of all participants and Lancers of Golf Sponsors resulted in over $23,000 raised for student scholarships at Malden Catholic. MC would like to recognize and thank event sponsors: Rosemary (Boland) GC ’69 and Jim Phalen; Century Bank; Danvers Ford; Tarpey Insurance; Focus Technology; RSM US,

M A L D E N C AT H O L I C I N T E R N S H I P S This summer, the Malden Catholic Center for Leadership provided professional competitive internship opportunities for over 70 students who participated in real-world leadership experiences in business, STEM and the arts. A number of Malden Catholic alumni in the fields of law, marketing, technology, health services and retail offered business internship positions for a host of students. Students with an interest in science participated in a proprietary STEM research program conducted in conjunction with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In addition, a group of students assisted with an active construction project in the Engineering Intensive experience and created engaging marketing and communications content for Urban Media Arts (formerly Malden Access TV). According to Nick Julian ’22, “The best takeaway from the MC Internship experience was the exposure I had to the real world. Waking up early in the morning, driving to Cambridge, working in an office and attending live events on behalf of Allied Global Marketing, the largest entertainment marketing firm of its kind, was truly something I never imagined that I would experience at 17 years old.” Mr. Joseph O’Donnell ‘62, founder of Allied Global Marketing, sponsored the internship.

12

In addition to the hands-on experience, MC students benefited from networking with career professionals and learning invaluable skills that are transferable across any path they may choose after college graduation. “This summer, we worked on creating a social media campaign

for Cataldo Ambulance Service directed toward younger job-seekers. The company made sure we had enough digital resources and gave us an insight to the world of marketing. This internship has opened my eyes to the responsibilities involved in becoming a professional in this field, and marketing is now a career I would like to pursue,” stated Isabella De La Gala ’23. Malden Catholic has plans to expand the Internship Program and continue to expose students to potential future career paths and areas for college course concentration. If you would like to offer an internship for a Malden Catholic student in the summer of 2022, please contact Mr. Chris McCarthy at mccarthyc@maldencatholic.org.

Our upcoming spring season and the Malden Catholic Gala are fast approaching, and I am thrilled to announce that Dr. Daniel J. McCarthy ‘50 and Mrs. Margaret T. (Noonan) McCarthy GC ’50 will be honored as the recipients of the school’s “Plus Ultra Award” at the annual Gala that will take place on Thursday, April 28, 2022, at 6:00 PM at Malden Catholic High School. Longtime benefactors of the school, Dr. and Mrs. McCarthy have established scholarship funds for Malden Catholic Girls and Boys Divisions, as well as an earlier Fund in memory of Margaret’s cousin Margaret M. Dunphy GC ‘61. They are also members of Malden Catholic’s Plus Ultra Society and the Saint Francis Xavier Society. Margaret “Peggy” McCarthy, after graduating Girls Catholic in 1950, went on to Saint Elizabeth’s Hospital School of Nursing, obtaining her R.N. in 1953. Her nursing career took her to five states, including Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, New Jersey and Georgia, working in nine different hospitals as a staff nurse and supervisor. She later earned a B.S. degree from Emmanuel College while in her early 50’s, graduating on the same day as her youngest child, Mary, who graduated from high school. She then began a successful 30-year career in real estate on Boston’s North Shore, while raising three children with her husband, Dan. Dr. Daniel J. McCarthy attended Dartmouth College, where he played on the hockey team, as he had at MC, receiving an AB degree in 1954. He continued at Dartmouth’s Amos Tuck School of Business and received an MBA degree a year later. After four years as a Navy Officer, he enrolled in the Doctoral Program at Harvard Business School, receiving a DBA degree in 1962. Dr. McCarthy retired from Northeastern University in 2017 as University Distinguished Professor and the D’Amore-McKim Distinguished Professor of Global Management & Innovation. He also served for 29 years as a Corporate Director of Clean Harbors Inc, a $6 billion NYSE listed company, the last ten years as Lead Director, retiring in 2016. He remains an Associate at the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard University. I am most grateful to Margaret and Dan McCarthy for their tremendous commitment and dedication to the Malden Catholic community, and look forward to having the opportunity to honor and present them with the “Plus Ultra Award” at the Gala! I kindly ask that you mark your calendars for this wonderful occasion.

Warmly,

JOHN K. THORNBURG Headmaster

SINGING THE SONG

Paul and Margaret Chisholm Who sings the song of Catholic education today? Who writes the words and fashions the tune? There’s a whole diverse chorus, no doubt, comprised of students who achieve beyond expectation, teachers who inspire lovingly, parents who sacrifice heroically and friends who support generously. Paul and Margaret Chisholm are no strangers to any of these roles. First hearing the tune from parents who valued Catholic education, they each came of age in the 1960s, a time understood by many as “The Catholic Moment” in America. A young, vibrant Irish-Catholic from Massachusetts was president; religious teaching congregations of Sisters and Brothers were at their all-time membership height; and Catholic elementary and secondary schools reached enrollment peaks not equaled since. Those Catholic schools had evolved from stepping stones for largely Irish, German, and Italian-immigrant cultural assimilation to launching pads for leadership, economic success, and prosperity -- all while offering a moral core centered in Gospel values. Catholic schools were quite a gift for those who could afford them! And many could, thanks to parish support and to a workforce comprised chiefly of nuns, priests, and brothers. Nonetheless, a $150 annual tuition could be a financial stretch for some! Back in that day, a community of 32 Xaverian Brothers once called 99 Crystal Street home. Along with dedicated lay men and women who helped staff the school, they “sang the song” for Malden Catholic from 1968 through the ‘70s. Their one-time 2nd-floor bedrooms are now MC admissions, development and business offices. Their dining room, community room, and chapel, which had doubled as a worship space for the school, were ultimately part of the demolition and renovations that heralded expansion and the 2018 arrival of a Girls Division. For the past five years a small, converted office has served as a temporary chapel, meeting the basic liturgical needs of the school. That’s about to change! The melody of Catholic education has been something of the musical score to the Chisholm’s lives. Margie, growing up in Somerville with two sisters and two brothers, enjoyed the educational benefits of Matignon High School and Emmanuel College. She and three siblings attended Saint Catherine School in Somerville. Her brother Tony then went to BC High, and Mary Catherine and Judy, joined Margie at Matignon. Judy’s boys JP and Tim Walsh attended MC. Paul and his brother Richie, growing up in Roslindale, attended Sacred Heart School; then Paul took 14

advantage of the offerings at Catholic Memorial High School and, later, Boston College. Paul’s brother, Richie, would become longtime Principal at Catholic Memorial. Margie recalls, “Paul and I first met at a mutual friend’s party during our senior year and later reconnected when we were both working part time at Jordan Marsh (long-departed Boston department store... swallowed up by Macy’s).” Right after their college graduation, they both relocated to North Carolina for graduate school, Paul at Wake Forest for a brand-new MBA program and Margie at UNC Chapel Hill, to pursue a degree in library science. Paul was looking for more rigor in his program, so they both decided to move back to Boston where Margie worked at New England Telephone/AT&T as a service representative, and Paul took a position also at New England Telephone/AT&T as a telecom/data consultant. They married in 1972. Margie laughs, “We were SO young!” Paul completed his MBA at Babson, and Margie earned her Master’s degree at Lesley College while raising her family. They lived for four years in Somerville, then moved to West Medford in 1976 soon after their first son Jamie was born. Sons Robby and Brendan followed! Jamie is now Senior Director of Corporate Affairs at Draft Kings, Robby is the Principal of the Condon School in South Boston, and Brendan is the Chief of Staff for the Chancellor at UMass Chan Medical School. The family worshipped at St. Raphael Parish, where the boys also attended school, before Robby (MC’95) and Brendan (MC’99) made their way to Malden Catholic. The boys had a great run at MC. Paul and Margie have many happy memories of special MC teachers and student friends of the boys, but in recalling those stories, they are always cautious not to go too far into detail, as they often end with someone landing himself in “detention”! The theme, though, is something like “West Medford meets Charlestown, the North End, Revere, and the rest of the world” in that interesting, diverse mix of backgrounds and personalities that has always been the hallmark of an MC Man. Paul admits that he could easily have declared several of his son’s MC friends as “dependents” on his income tax because they were always at his home. Margie’s professional interests and expression of ministry found fertile ground at St. Raphael School, where in 1987 she began service as a librarian and later enjoyed other roles as campus minister and Director of Mission and Identity. She still stays connected with St. Ray’s in advisory and volunteer capacities. Among those

she credits with the caring influences that helped shape her worldview, Margie notes, first, her parents as teachers of kindness and compassion; then, she finds inspiration in the joyful witness to Jesus’ love that she finds in the Medical Missionaries of Mary, a religious community whom she supports and serves. Paul’s career initiative and talents have taken him to the top of the telecom world. From 1992 to 2001, he was president and CEO of COLT Telecom Group, headquartered in London, England. While there he was ranked the 26th-best-performing CEO in the world by The Harvard Business Review. He then continued to make his mark as an industry giant as Chairman and CEO of mindSHIFT Technologies. While under his leadership, mindSHIFT, one of the largest IT outsourcing and cloud services providers for small and medium-sized businesses, was recognized as the number one MSP in the United States for four consecutive years. Paul has been a member of the Executive Council of the distinguished Catholic Schools Foundation, which does so much to support Catholic education in the Boston Archdiocese; a Trustee Emeritus of Babson College, a Board member for several technology companies, and is currently Chairman of the Board of Directors for Cathedral High School in Boston’s South End. Paul has even demonstrated the facility and skills to step briefly into the operational role at Cathedral, serving as Head of School during a recent change in school leadership. Many people and organizations deeply appreciate Paul and Margaret for their achievements, service and philanthropy. Paul was presented the “Vince in Bono Malum Award” for Professional Achievement from Catholic Memorial High School. In 2014, Margaret and Paul were the honored recipients of the “Dear Neighbor Award” presented at the first annual “Living the Dream” Dinner celebrating 140 years of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston. Malden Catholic also honored Margaret and Paul with a Lifetime Achievement Award at our 2016 Gala. In her remarks that night, Margie explained her loyalty to Malden Catholic in terms of a mother’s debt of gratitude, “I am thankful for Malden Catholic’s having provided our sons with an environment that nurtured our most cherished values and with teachers who cared as much about their moral development as their intellectual growth. Their teachers effectively modeled our ideals in ways that resonated with our boys during those interesting adolescent years when my attempts to influence them often met with resistance.” She added, “Another reason for gratitude is that although MC emphasized high academic and behavioral standards, it had an expansive and inclusive philosophy. Boys from all sorts of backgrounds and levels of academic ability were welcomed, and they were offered the help needed to be successful in high school and beyond.” Paul would concur, saying, “Malden Catholic provides an important alternative educational

experience – one that emphasizes academic mastery, of course, while also being values based, Gospelcentered, and grounded in community. It stresses the importance of both the common good and individual accomplishment. To achieve this balance, the school must have the resources to maintain high standards of scholarship while nurturing an environment in which personal best and regard for others are equally significant.” Paul and Margie have gone above and beyond in assisting with those needed resources. Their years of kind generosity to Malden Catholic, including their role as major donors in our 2015 The Essential Campaign, have helped us to continue to sing the song of Catholic education vibrantly. What’s more, though, through their extraordinary goodness, Malden Catholic will once again have a fully functioning Chapel right along the main thoroughfare of our building where it should be! We are delighted, thankful, and excited that by this March the Brother Thomas Puccio, CFX Chapel, named in honor of longtime MC administrator Brother Puccio, will offer students, faculty and staff alike a sacred space for reflection, prayer and praise. Those who have received Christmas cards and Easter updates from Margaret and Paul in recent years have enjoyed the accompanying family photo-scenes of a broadly smiling Paul and Margie surrounded by their children and nine grandchildren. The beat goes on! One wonders, will Catholic schools be in their futures? Paul and Margaret have done more than their part in boosting the sustainability of Catholic schools. We thank Paul and Margie for a lifetime of singing the song of Catholic education, for having included Malden Catholic as one of the verses in their tune, and for having extended their family love both to us and to the greater Catholic family of the Boston area. Through their generosity, generations to come may enjoy excellence in academics and experience the imprint of Gospel values at schools like MC that inspire lifelong learning, faith, and service! We are deeply grateful to them!

Mr. Sean Hurley ’97 CFO AND VICE PRESIDENT OF ADVANCEMENT

Following his student years at Malden Catholic, Sean Hurley ’97 attended Bates College, majoring in economics and minoring in Spanish. He rowed for all 4 years on their Men’s Rowing Team. Subsequently, he was an investment banker in New York’s energy sector for 3.5 years at Wasserstein Perella. Next, Sean went to Citadel Investment Group, where he worked for 7 years as a Portfolio Manager in their Chicago and London offices, helping launch their Equities Derivatives business within their Long/Short Equities portfolio. Sean then started his own smaller hedge fund for 3 years and simultaneously created an education analytics company called MyRoadForward to help young people evaluate different career paths and education opportunities. Along the way, he completed an MBA at the University of Chicago with a focus on entrepreneurship and finance. Sean served on MC’s Board of Trustees for 6 years prior to joining Malden Catholic in 2019. In simple language, Sean is a “big picture guy” who oversees the strategic interests of MC’s Advancement, Admissions and Finance efforts and coordinates daily operations in those three intersecting school areas. He devours data and determines how best to use it to our advantage. Sean works with his Advancement colleagues and our Board members to speak with as many alumni and benefactors as possible. He works with our Admissions Director to create exciting ways to promote Malden Catholic to our local Catholic and public school communities. He has engendered creative partnerships with those schools, attracting middle and elementary school students to MC STEM classes and summer programs. He helps to run our very successful 8th-grade Small Group Tours and 16

Presentations, which, in our pandemic environment, have replaced our Open Houses. Sean also recognizes the tuition challenges of many of our families, so he executes on our strategic goals with Advancement to make an MC education as affordable as possible for Malden Catholic families. “It’s so important,” he says, “for MC to continue to respond to families that we serve. Though we provide service to a variety of middle-class communities, our students are enrolling and graduating at colleges at significantly higher rates than other students in their local areas. An MC education,” says Hurley, “makes a dramatic difference in the lives of our students and in furthering the possibilities of their future success. We are fortunate to be agents in this powerful dynamic!” Sean grew up in Medford and now lives in Winchester with his wife, Elizabeth, daughter Isabel, 9, and son Alex, 7. He finds it relaxing to walk his dog in the Middlesex Fells, and the family is proud of their gardening efforts! “We grew our own pumpkins this year,” he says, “along with lots of tomatoes, cucumbers, spinach, celery, squash and even some corn!” MC can be proud, too, of the growth it has enjoyed with Sean’s nurturing care!

Meet your Malden Catholic Advancement Team A private school gives students a four-year adventure of learning and relationship building with classmates, teachers, coaches and other staff. Where that relationship turns for the next 60 (or so) years after graduation is the business of the Advancement Office! Beyond the effort to engage alumni, an Advancement Team works to enlist the broadest possible range of parent, community and corporate support to help insure the sustainability of a school. We have a great Team at Malden Catholic, and there is a new look to the department. “I am excited about the new structure for our Advancement Office,” says Headmaster John Thornburg. “Sean Hurley’s leadership talent at the strategic level will catalyze our outstanding staff, as we reach to achieve our aggressive advancement goals. Malden Catholic is at an important point in its history, as we launch our bold strategic plan.” We would like you to meet the other members of our dynamic Advancement Team: Robert McCarthy, Senior Director of Advancement; Sarah Hamilton P ’22, Director of Advancement Operations; and Christopher McCarthy MC ’91, Associate Director of Advancement & Alumni Engagement.

A native of Brighton, Bob attended Matignon High School (Cambridge) and Boston College, where he earned, first, an A.B. in Theology and Classics, and then his M.Ed. in Administration and School Leadership from BC’s Lynch School. His son Chris (MC’07) recently joined our MC staff, and his daughter Chiara, an RN-NP Simmons College alumna, is a nurse practitioner at Children’s Hospital. At Malden Catholic, Bob assumes three main responsibilities: to work closely with the Headmaster, Executive Team, and Board of Trustees to establish funding relationships and secure resources that support Malden Catholic’s mission and long-term strategic goals; to lead advancement efforts to identify, cultivate, pursue and retain major donor and contributor support, while working to maintain strong relationships with alumni donors, planned giving society members and foundations; and to strategize and implement efforts to secure untapped resources. Bob has an extraordinary 40-years of service in Catholic education in all roles including classroom instructor, Admissions Director, Advancement Director, Principal and Headmaster. He served as the

18

co-chair of the 2002 feasibility study which resulted in the decision to convert one of the Archdiocesan Central High Schools into a Cristo Rey model school, combining a rigorous college prep educational program with corporate work study positions for all students. Bob served as the first Principal of the school and later as Headmaster and Development Director where he oversaw the implementation of a successful and comprehensive advancement program. Bob has served on numerous committees throughout the Archdiocese of Boston including the first elementary accreditation review board which resulted in Catholic elementary schools moving into the process of accreditation with the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc. (NEASC). He has been an active participant in the National Catholic Educational Association as a regional delegate and served on multiple NEASC accreditation committees serving as both chairperson and committee member. He has served on numerous school advisory boards. Several years ago, Bob was recognized by the Catholic Schools Foundation at the annual Inner-City Scholarship Fund Dinner for outstanding contributions to Catholic education. “What I find most interesting about Malden Catholic,” says Bob, “is the personal and professional achievement and success of the school’s alumni since the school’s founding in 1932 and the deep and enduring loyalty and relationships to and with the Xaverian Brothers, faculty and staff and the wider MC community that exist. The MC experience across the decades resonate with a strong sense of community and deep roots that are foundational to the Xaverian Brothers in their vocation and mission to build enduring personal relationships.” Bob is pleased that the school’s long history of developing students with strong character who act to improve the world provides support for MC’s fundraising efforts.

A native of Lawrence, MA, Sarah has lived in Methuen for the past 30 years with husband Rick. They are blessed with three children, William, 22, Caroline, 21 and Aidan, 17, who is a senior at MC. Following her high school years at Presentation of Mary Academy in Methuen, she earned a BA in Government and minored in American Studies at Skidmore College. Sarah’s education continued with a Juris Doctorate from New England Law. After graduating from law school and passing the bar in 1988, Sarah started a nearly 2-decade career as a self-employed attorney, in general practice with lots of domestic and family law work. Most of the caseload, though, was

19

criminal defense work through the Essex County Bar Advocate Program. Sarah was assigned twice a month to the Lawrence District Court, where she represented indigent clients, following their cases from arraignment through deposition, whether that be by dismissal, plea or trial before a judge or jury. Through this challenging work, Hamilton says, “I really learned to think on my feet and advocate for so many people to find the best resolution for their problems.” Sarah’s legal career abruptly came to an end in 2007 when her daughter Caroline, who was in kindergarten at the time, was diagnosed with a Juvenile Pilocytic Astrocytoma – “a fancy name,” she says, “for the most common pediatric brain tumor.” She immediately began chemotherapy at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Hamilton recalls, “As I was a self-employed solo practitioner, I could not keep up with my practice. I became a full-time brain tumor mother. When I learned about the frontline treatments for our daughter’s brain cancer, which were archaic, invasive and ineffective due to a lack of funded research, I became involved in a parent driven grass-roots effort to change things. I began fundraising efforts through the Jimmy Fund as Team Chickaroo, to raise funds for research. By 2019, Team Chickaroo raised over $1 Million (through the Jimmy Fund Walk, a Chickaroo Classic Golf Tournament, and a Mom Prom) and has impacted the development of targeted therapies and tumor identification.” Returning to work in 2012, Sarah had a new career. She took a role, lasting till 2019, at her alma mater, PMA, as Director of Special Events and later as Director of Advancement. Now in her third year at Malden Catholic, Sarah assumes chief responsibility for coordination of the annual fund appeals for the Fund for Malden Catholic and the annual Gala. These tasks entail energetic devotion to messaging, event planning, stewarding of relationships, managing volunteers and attending to the many details that go into our daily Advancement operations. In getting familiar with her new community – and thrilled that her son is part of it -- Sarah is wonderfully impressed by the loyal and most generous commitment of Malden Catholic’s alumni. “This speaks volumes,” she says. “of the value of an MC experience and the life changing impact of a Xaverian Brothers education.”

We welcomed alum Chris McCarthy back to MC just this year. Hailing from Medford, he graduated from St. Anselm College and majored in Criminal Justice. As a youthful world traveler, Chris has visited 6 of 7 Continents, 23 countries in total. His favorite stopover was Botswana’s Okavango Delta in Africa. He says that he is blessed to enjoy close relationships with 4 grandparents who have been inspirational to him. Chris’s key responsibilities are building, cultivating and stewarding relationships with key volunteers and groups. His goal, thereby, is to sustain and increase The Fund for Malden Catholic’s giving and participation. Chris is also responsible for developing and executing strategies and opportunities to educate recent graduates about philanthropy. He does this through personal solicitations, establishing networks of personal and media communications, and coordinating a wide variety of School and alumni gatherings and events. Prior to his time at MC, Chris was a sales representative and, later, Group Sales Account Executive for 7 years with Grand Circle Corporation, operating out of Boston, then Tampa, FL. He enjoys training at F45 Fitness Center, with high intensity interval and circuit training, and though he has not yet managed to run circles around his dad Bob, our Senior Director of Advancement, he does stay several steps ahead of most of our young alums! We are thankful for his energy and enthusiasm in cultivating relationships among our base and local community. Thanks to the zeal and earnest labors of these four very talented members of our Advancement Team, Malden Catholic enjoys an advancement trajectory pointing toward a very positive future.

LET TER FROM THE CHAIRMAN

D E A R F R I E N D S O F M A L D E N C AT H O L I C : I truly hope this holiday season is one of joy for you and your family. Collectively, we have traveled an arduous journey in recent months, but I hope that better days are ahead. Knowing that there is always a silver lining behind every cloud, may we trust that some good can emerge even from our terrible pandemic. For me, and I hope perhaps for you, it has been a time to step back and reflect on what is important in our life journey. Rarely are “things” the most important! Almost always they are family and friendships; frequently, however, they are other people or institutions who have positively influenced us. A recent dinner with Brother Conal Owens, C.F.X., my high school Principal from 57 years ago, certainly reinforced my feelings about the power of a Xaverian influence in my life. These are exciting times at Malden Catholic. Our codivisional model has transformed the school into one of the fastest growing Catholic secondary schools in the country. Our balance sheet and operating results are the best I have witnessed in the past 20 years. Despite the recent pandemic challenges, our team is about to wrap up a $4.6 million renovation at 99 Crystal Street. Included are a new performing arts center, girls locker room, science lab, and chapel, which will be named after our beloved Brother Tom Puccio. Few, if any, other local schools are currently making this level of infrastructure commitments. Confident of our future, Malden Catholic is moving boldly forward! Consistent with our forward thinking, we are currently deeply engaged with a Strategic Plan with a goal of providing optimal direction for the next 5-10 years. We would not have the confidence to pursue the next chapter in the long and storied history of Malden Catholic and Girls Catholic without having unconditional belief that our benefactors are there for us. Consolidation and closures continue among Catholic high schools locally as well as nationally. A common theme of such schools is lack of donor support. Malden Catholic, on the other hand, currently provides over $4.5 million ANNUALLY in financial aid and scholarship monies. We can make this happen only with incredible support from many different constituencies. I offer my personal thanks to parents, faculty and staff, trustees, Malden Catholic alumni, Girls Catholic alumnae, Foundations, and friends for your unwavering support. It has been very gratifying in recent months to see the growing number of benefactors who have chosen to make Malden Catholic a part of their will or estate plan. Such generosity shows that members of our Malden Catholic family want to make certain that their legacy includes a final thank you to the Xaverian Brothers, School Sisters of Notre Dame, and dedicated lay faculty and staff who made such a difference in their lives. God bless you for your continued encouragement and support of Malden Catholic.

Sincerely,

J I M D O N OVA N Hon 2011

Debbie & Bob Reardon ‘82 Throughout their lives, Bob and Debbie Reardon have emphasized the importance of a Catholic education to their children. “We wanted to encourage our children to walk in the path of kindness, compassion, hard work, and care of others. For us, that’s the foundation of family life,” said Bob. “I knew that the values I had received as a young man at Malden Catholic developed those qualities in me, as well as a strong Catholic worldview, and nothing pleased us more than to have our children benefit from a similarly rich Catholic ethos.”

28

Catholic education is a well-woven tradition in the Reardon family fabric. As faithful parishioners at Saint Francis of Assisi Parish in Medford, they attended the parish school. Bob’s own mother, Kathleen Cafferty Reardon, was a Girls Catholic alumna from the Class of 1958. Kathleen, in turn, made sure that her children would enjoy the benefits of the Girls Catholic and Malden Catholic experience by enrolling her three children. Bob graduated in 1982 from Malden Catholic, followed by his brother, Patrick, in 1984. His sister, Noreen, graduated from Girls Catholic in 1986.

“My siblings and I were all blessed to receive the education that our mother and grandmother wished for us,” Bob commented. “Bob and Debbie have channeled this sense of blessing in an on-going way through their sustained support of good work of Malden Catholic,” says Malden Catholic Headmaster Mr. John Thornburg. For this we are thankful! For the last several years, in memory of his mom, Bob has provided scholarship assistance, easing the challenge of tuition for deserving students. As strong supporters of our St. Francis Xavier Society, Bob and Debbie continue to return the gift they have been given! While at Malden Catholic, Bob loved playing basketball and ran cross county. According to Bob, Track Coach Brother Myles McManus and Basketball Coach (later Headmaster) Tom Arria provided incredible, supportive, and encouraging experiences for him on the playing field, as well as in the classroom. He also credits his accounting teacher, Sister Norma, for the guidance and inspiration that propelled him into the next stage of his life as a Certified Public Accountant. Following graduation from Merrimack College, Bob served as a CPA for the first 5 years of his career (for the firm now known as RSM). He has since become a serial entrepreneur with more than 10 start-up companies across various industries. Currently, Bob serves as chairman and CEO of Insight Service Group, Inc., the largest national medical-and-fraud services partner to the insurance industry. Bob and Debbie currently reside in Winchester, Massachusetts and Palm Beach, Florida. They have three children, Bobby (25), who graduated from Boston College Carroll School of Management and is currently a Director of Mergers and Acquisitions at ISG; Sochia (23), who graduated from Northeastern D’Amore-McKim School of Business and is living and working in New York; and Shannon (21), who is a senior at Boston College in the Carroll School of Management. Bob has served on many educational boards including those of the Fenn School, Newton Country Day School of the Sacred Heart, St Sebastian’s School, and the Boston College Leadership Council. “Malden Catholic,” Bob proudly proclaims, “will forever be the beginning of my success as a young man, a friend, husband, and father, and I can’t overstate its influence on my life! Plus Ultra!”

“Malden Catholic is an institution that fosters a community of faith, a love of God, a concern for the poor and marginalized and a sharing of personal gifts and talents.” - Bob Reardon ’82 29

INDELIBLE MOMENTS

Steve Byrne ’95 Most of us, no doubt, have indelible high school moments etched into our memories – good times and bad. For Steve Byrne ’95, the memories are good! Mostly! Those recollections of fruitless attempts by him and the Class of ’95 posse John Kelley, Chris Caprio, Ryan Fortier, Matty McKenna, Ryan Hardy, and Robbie Chisholm to outwit disciplinarian, Mr. Tom Arria, are mostly buried beyond retrieval! But, for sure, he’ll never forget that Thanksgiving Eve, when, with the clock ticking down under a minute, his brother Dave ’93 launched a perfect spiral into the steady hands of Dennis Wilcox ’93. The MC crowd roared as the touchdown brought us within one point of #1-ranked Xaverian, and then Jeff Turner ’92 caught a two-point conversion and sealed the deal for a 15-14 win! Jeff’s daughter Avery and Steve’s daughter Maeve are currently Lancer sophomores, no doubt with their own memories in the making! Steve was on the sidelines as a freshman fan at that game, but his years as an interscholastic athlete in football and basketball left him with dozens of great

32

experiences and memories. An offensive and defensive tackle on the gridiron for four years, Steve earned Agganis All-Star honors. He also played two years of basketball, volunteered for Special Olympics, and attended MCLI. It’s not unusual that student-athletes will develop a strong bond of admiration and inspiration from teacher-coaches. Steve found those role models in the fun-loving and zealous persons of Rick Mazzei and Guy Prescott. Mr. Mazzei’s “The 1960s U.S. History” senior elective could entrance even the most reluctant students (not saying that that was Steve!), and his expertise on the Lacrosse field brought home a string of Catholic Conference Championships in the ’90s. Prescott’s powerful personality, his spirit of joy on the football field and in his Physical Education and Social Studies classes were legend. Steve recalls them fondly and thanks them for teaching that one should love whatever one chooses for a profession.

Steve grew up in Malden with brothers Dave ’93, and Danny ’98, and sister Jen, who attended Pope John XXIII High School. He recalls, “After nine years at Sacred Hearts’ Cheverus, down the street, I continued my Catholic education at MC. Several friends from Cheverus went to MC. It was important to my parents for us to go to Catholic schools, and we are all still not sure how they did it financially for the four of us.” But they did, and Malden Catholic was the launching pad for Steve’s next years at Bentley University, where he majored in Business Management and played football. For the past twenty years, Steve has been making his mark at Fidelity Investments, where he has transitioned through a variety of finance roles. He counts about seven or eight of them. “Early on,” he says, “working within Corporate Decision Support and Competitive Analysis really opened my eyes. Collaborating in numerous strategic decisions and seeing the impacts of them through our firm’s P&L, cash flow, and balance sheet informed and challenged my perspective, preparing me for all future roles.” Steve is currently Vice-President of Finance in Fidelity’s Institutional Business line, where he partners closely with their Clearing, Custody, and Intermediary business heads. When not volunteering on the Bear Hill Golf Club Board of Governors or with our Malden Catholic Alumni Association, he pursues enrichment opportunities with the Wharton Securities Industry Institute, a 3-year program, meeting 1 week annually and culminating in a SIFMA/Wharton Certificate; and as a participant in Fidelity’s GLTP -- Global Leader Tomorrow Program -- executive leadership program.

Byrne lives in Wakefield with his wife of 19 years, Keri, and their three children, Maeve ’24, Delia, and Ronan. Together, they spend lots of time with family and friends. Steve enjoys opportunities to golf and to travel and, always, to follow our Boston sports teams. When his daughter Maeve was exploring the high school landscape as an 8th-grader, Steve didn’t want to be “one of those parents” who takes charge of the decision making and forces the choice. “I brought Maeve and 5 friends down to see the school one night in their 7th-grade year. I honestly wasn’t pushing MC too hard, and we were looking at 2 - 3 other schools. By the time we left that evening, Maeve stated that she was going to MC whether she knew anyone going there or not!” Perhaps unbeknownst to Steve, his years of “talking up” MC did have an impact on his daughter. When asked what influenced her decision to attend MC, she led by saying her dad talked about it “all the time,” and then went on to say that she felt a special sense of community at MC’s Open House. Maeve has been quick to throw her energies into successful academics and athletics as center on last year’s Girls JV Basketball Team and as a defender this year on our first-ever Field Hockey Team. We hope that Maeve comes to cherish what is very clear to her Dad. “The Malden Catholic community,” he says, “creates a special place to learn, grow and push oneself and classmates to new heights. MC is all about building great friendships, appreciating accountability and learning about leadership. Most of my best friends today are from MC ’95, and we continue to push each other to do better today.” Some things are just impossible to forget!

The Saint Fancis Xavier Society LEADERSHIP GIVING IN SUPPORT OF THE FUND FOR MALDEN CATHOLIC

Malden Catholic’s leadership giving circle, the Saint Francis Xavier Society, began in 1994 as a way to promote and celebrate unrestricted gifts of $1,000 or more to the Fund for Malden Catholic. SFX Chair and founder, Joe O’Donnell ’62, was one of four Charter Members who contributed a total of $8,000 to the Fund for MC in its first year. Membership in the SFX Society has grown steadily over the past 26 years. In 2020 - 2021, membership increased to 170 with MC alumni with Girls Catholic High School alumnae, parents, faculty, staff, grandparents, and friends of Malden Catholic comprising the group’s membership. In FY 2020 – 2021, SFX Society members contributed over $741,000 to the Fund for Malden Catholic, which represents 85% of all FFMC giving. Malden Catholic in most grateful for the generous commitment of members of the SFX Society and their steadfast belief in the power and promise of our mission.

The Fund for Malden Catholic Gifts to the Fund for Malden Catholic provide critical unrestricted support that enables Malden Catholic to immediately respond to our school’s most critical needs. Generous support of the Fund for Malden Catholic helps to ensure the sustainability of Xaverian education and provides for the margin of education excellence that goes beyond the value of the cost of tuition. With your gift of unrestricted funds to the Fund for Malden Catholic, you will enhance the academics, programs, technology and opportunities that prepare MC students for the future. This support also assures the affordability of a Malden Catholic education for each family. At Malden Catholic, we specialize in cultivating the whole student - spiritually, intellectually, socially and physically. Now more than ever, the world needs young adults who are prepared to lead, live a life of service and exemplify the strength of the Xaverian values - these are the students of Malden Catholic. Support for the Fund of Malden Catholic today will help us continue to grow and help our students make a difference in the world! We are grateful to those who support the Fund for Malden Catholic. 39

Linda Leary

62

For Dick Leary ‘49, community service was not a passing fancy, but a lifetime commitment; so, it is no surprise that his daughter Linda would be imprinted by this model of generous giving of self. Linda has been a lifelong resident of Brookline, where her father, Richard Leary ‘49, was Town Administrator for 25 years. Linda graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 1981. Shortly after, she began her career in banking, first, with Bank of New England and then with the global custodian, Brown Brothers Harriman & Company (BBH), where she completed 34 years of service and retired on July 1, 2021. While working at BBH, Linda had the opportunity to spend two years working in Luxembourg enabling her to travel throughout Europe and forge lifelong friendships. Stepping away from her workday routines has allowed Linda to shift her focus to how best to fulfill her retirement years with volunteer opportunities and providing financial support for institutions such as Malden Catholic. She has assumed that role with relish!

his life-long association with the school. “My dad’s true passion while attending Malden Catholic,” she says, “was hockey. He was a member of the 1948 Malden Catholic State Championship Hockey Team and the 1949 Catholic League Championship Team. Throughout his life, my dad regularly attended Malden Catholic events, including hockey games and the scholarship breakfasts that recognized donors. I often read the thank you notes sent to my dad from students who had benefited from the Richard T. Leary, Jr. Memorial Scholarship. The notes would reflect appreciation for the scholarship, but most importantly they revealed how the scholarship had relieved families of the financial challenges that they faced.” The commitment and dedication that her dad had for Malden Catholic made an impression on Linda, and she wanted to continue not only his gift giving, but also the personal interaction with the Malden Catholic community to show her appreciation for the school that had molded her dad into the caring and selfless person he became.

Linda witnessed firsthand her father’s commitment to community service, not just in Brookline, but also at Malden Catholic, where Dick was a longtime leadership donor through the Saint Francis Xavier Society. She recalls

Like many others, Linda enjoyed attending our annual SFX Society Reception this past October. “While attending,” she says, “two words came to mind that truly reflect the spirit of Malden Catholic: community and camaraderie.”

How wonderful it was, she felt, that after a two-year pandemic-driven hiatus of the event, friends of the school could once again gather in person! “I could feel how thrilled people were to be back with their Malden Catholic friends,” she said. “It was palpable.” She surmises the reason: “Malden Catholic is more than a learning environment; it is a community that instills teamwork through the multiple programs of academics, athletics, and rich extracurriculars.” Both from her father and from her own observations, Linda has studied and learned the Malden Catholic story well. “Beyond the community that Malden Catholic has built over the decades,” she relates, “it never loses sight of the individual and the sensitivity needed to nurture each student toward personal growth and development. When one visits the school,” she says, “the confidence of each student is obvious as each reaches out, whether to newcomers, or to returning alums, or to friends visiting for a special MC event such as a Gala or special reception.” She remembers one such reception, a book-signing, that took place in December of 2017. The Honorable Gerard F. Doherty ’46 of Charlestown, a friend of and advisor to the Kennedys, was showcasing his book, They Were My Friends - Jack, Bob and Ted: My Life In and Out of Politics. She was impressed by this “teaching moment,” one generation of Lancer imparting life-wisdom to those of several later generations! “One could see from this book signing,” she said, “how amazing it was that no matter how many years had passed, a distinguished alum like Mr. Doherty ’46 could return to the school that enabled him to accomplish great goals and impart to current students the opportunities awaiting them after their Malden Catholic education!”

Now more than ever Linda believes it is important, not only to provide current support for Malden Catholic’s essential, immediate needs, but also to strengthen the school’s financial sustainability. She has done exactly that by joining the Theodore James Ryken Society, the School’s vehicle for planned giving. This support moves in many directions. It underwrites the maintenance and enhancement of facilities; it provides financial assistance that allows for expanded tuition relief, thereby increasing enrollment; at the same time, it helps maintain high standards of academic and extracurricular programming. Linda notes the excellence of these programs, reflected in impressive outcomes: prestigious college acceptances and the careers that take root in the nourishing soil of an MC foundation. She observes, “The successful addition of the Girls Division, capturing the old spirit of Girls Catholic, and the resulting burgeoning enrollments are clear testimony to the value that families place on the importance of a Catholic education.” Like her dad, Linda applauds this growth. She wants to support it and help to ensure the future of Malden Catholic, a school that has done so much for so many! We remember Dick Leary ’49 with love and thanksgiving, and we extend to Linda our deepest appreciation that she would so honor her father by memorializing at Malden Catholic his spirit of care and love.

The Theodore James Ryken Society In 2004, Malden Catholic inaugurated the Theodore James Ryken Society to recognize those who have provided for future generations of Malden Catholic students by making gifts through bequests, life income arrangements and other planned gifts. When you join the Theodore James Ryken Society, you demonstrate your commitment to the current and future students who attend MC. Your planned gift is an inspiration to future generations and a reminder of the philanthropy that sustains Malden Catholic. By giving back through a bequest or a planned gift, Ryken Society members demonstrate dedication that transcends time. Members of the Theodore James Ryken Society have indicated in writing that they have made special provisions for Malden Catholic in their estate plans. In addition to being a meaningful gift to MC, Planned Giving helps to reduce or eliminate taxes on capital gains and federal estate taxes for the donors. Please check with your financial advisor or accountant for more details on arranging for a planned gift and the personal benefits associated with that charitable gift.

YOU CAN BECOME A MEMBER WAY S T O B E C O M E A M E M B E R • Include Malden Catholic in your will, revocable trust or other financial plans. • Provide a life income arrangement or charitable trust for the benefit of Malden Catholic such as a charitable remainder trust, a charitable lead trust or a pooled income fund. • Name Malden Catholic as the owner and/or beneficiary of a life insurance policy. • Make a gift to the school of a residence or other tangible property. MC Athletics Malden Catholic Lancers rose to the occasion this fall, and our sports teams exceeded all expectations! In the previous year, many programs had been shortened, modified or were unable to run... and very few allowed spectators. This year, however, student-athletes pushed forward and demonstrated great performances and incredible MC spirit! “We are so proud of the Malden Catholic students, coaches and their families,” stated Athletic Director Bill Raycraft. “We were all inspired by everyone’s resiliency and determination to come back to the fields, court and pool, and it was a sight we had all missed!” The entire school community enjoyed the celebrations that came with the fall season including attending live games, pep rallies, homecoming and LancerPalooza. However, the element that everyone seemed most grateful for, particularly after so many pandemic months, was the opportunity to build strong relationships with those who support the blue and gold – for this is and has always been the foundation of MC’s programs. We also had tremendous fan support at many of our athletic events this fall, which demonstrated what Lancer pride is all about. As one media outlet commented, “Malden Catholic’s enthusiasm and school spirit were unlike anything we’ve seen before.” Now, with the winter sports season upon us, our Lancers once again are looking forward to maximizing the opportunities to work together towards a common goal. This includes a strong, positive attitude and level of dedication that embodies Malden Catholic’s student body as they continue to go Plus Ultra!
