We would like to thank our volunteers, players, and generous sponsors for making our event such a tremendous success! Beyond the joy of the day itself, your contributions raised nearly $50,000 for student scholarships. Your generosity will help us continue to make a difference in the lives of those who follow in our footsteps.

LANCERS IN COLLEGE DAY
Current Malden Catholic Seniors got to listen and ask questions to a panel of recent graduates about their current college experiences. The Class of 2023 received their yearbooks and caught up with fellow recent graduates from the Class of 2020 to 2022 over some pizza in the cafeteria. It was a great day to catch up with old friends, classmates, and faculty/staff.

ALUMNI HOCKEY GAME
The Alumni Hockey Game was held last month, where the hallowed halls of nostalgia echoed with cheers as former Lancers laced up their skates once again for an unforgettable evening of camaraderie and competition. The ice was alive with the spirit of Malden Catholic, and it was evident that time had not dulled the skills or the passion of our alumni.
The game unfolded as a spectacular back-and-forth battle where eight goals each were netted by both the blue and gold teams by the end of regulation, leaving the crowd on the edge of their seats. As the clock wound down and the tension soared, the game transitioned into a shootout, adding an extra layer of excitement to the already intense match. In the end, it was the blue team that emerged victorious, clinching the win in a shootout showdown. It was a true testament to the competitive spirit and skill that has become synonymous with the legacy of Malden Catholic hockey.

HOOPS MC VS CM ALUMNI GATHERING
The turnout was phenomenal, and it was evident that the energy in the room was electrifying. The game itself was a rollercoaster of emotions, with both teams giving their all. The back-and-forth action kept us on the edge of our seats, creating an atmosphere filled with anticipation and camaraderie.
In the end, our beloved team demonstrated incredible resilience and determination. Despite the fierce competition and the number one ranking of CM, MC powered through and emerged victorious.
After the game, the festivities continued with an amazing social. It was delightful to see familiar faces reconnecting and creating new memories together. Your presence undoubtedly contributed to the overall success of the event, making it more than just a basketball game but a celebration of our shared spirit and pride in our alma mater.

ALUMNI LACROSSE GAME
The 7th Annual Malden Catholic Alumni Lacrosse game was a remarkable gathering, with nearly 40 former players returning to their alma mater. Alumni from the class of 1997 all the way up to the class of 2023 showcased their enduring passion for the sport. The day began with a thrilling match against the current 2024 team, where the alumni narrowly triumphed with a 2-1 victory. The excitement continued as the alumni split into Blue and White teams, representing odd and even graduation years respectively.
The Blue Team emerged victorious, defeating the White Team 5-3 in a spirited and nostalgic contest. The event was a testament to the strong bonds and lasting legacy of Malden Catholic’s lacrosse program, uniting past and present players in a celebration of athletic excellence and school pride.

Letter from the President
Welcome to the 2024 edition of our MC Magazine!
Dear Malden Catholic Community,
Each year we publish this magazine to share the good news happening at Malden Catholic. As you review the pages, I believe you will be amazed at all that is happening at our beloved school. Malden Catholic’s brand is strong and continues to grow! Your investment has impacted lives and propelled us into a bright and bold future.

We exceeded expectations in year one of Our Essential Future Campaign. With your support, construction of 50 Crystal Street has begun, and our new building is estimated to open in the Fall of 2025. This new facility will transform our campus, bringing advanced academic programming to our high school, enhanced athletic facilities, and the addition of a 7th and 8th grade division.
Overall giving to the school surpassed our goal, which included our largest gala on record! The Leading Beyond Gala at Encore was magical and was received with overwhelming enthusiasm and participation. Make sure to mark your calendar for Saturday, April 5, because you won’t want to miss this outstanding event.
It has been a privilege to lead Malden Catholic these past five years. Our school has grown to almost 900 students, we have made many capital improvements, and next year at this time we should be ready to move into 50 Crystal Street with improved programming for our high school students and offer an MC education to students in 7th and 8th grade.
Your investment in our school is changing lives while securing the future. This would not have been possible without your support. We still have some distance to cover in our capital campaign and will be looking to you to help us reach our goal.
Thank you in advance for all you do for Malden Catholic,
JOHN K. THORNBURG President
Your investment in our school is changing lives while securing the future. This would not have been possible without your support.

50 Crystal Street Groundbreaking Ceremony
By Brother Thomas Puccio, C.F.X., Ed. D., H’18
On Thursday evening, May 9, 2024, Malden Catholic celebrated the auspicious official beginnings of the next great chapter in School history with a groundbreaking ceremony for the multipurpose academic and athletic building that will be constructed on 50 Crystal Street.

First announced by President John Thornburg at our 18th Annual Gala on April 6th, along with the unveiling of plans for a 7th and 8th-Grade middle school program and the launch of our current capital campaign, Our Essential Future – A Campaign for Malden Catholic, the construction on 50 Crystal St, slated for September 2025 completion, sets the stage for an ever-more promising future!
Malden Catholic CFO / Vice-President for Advancement Sean Hurley ’97 welcomed guests and introduced Director of Mission Integration Brother Thomas Puccio, C.F.X., to offer a blessing. He then invited Board Vice-Chair Michael Cantalupa ’79 to offer thanks and reflection.
Cantalupa began by recognizing the 9 Xaverian Brothers in attendance, saying that, “Their life-vocation and ministry have provided a rich tradition and a legacy that has enabled Malden Catholic to arrive at this important day.” Next, he thanked the MC Board of Trustees, whose “vision, guidance, and commitment to our beloved school brought us to this moment.” Also recognized for their hard work were the members of the 50 Crystal Committee – Paul Sullivan ’87, Rob Di Marco ’91, and Steve O’Neill ’78 –whose expertise “gives comfort that the project is properly guided.” Cantalupa extended thanks to school leadership, particularly Facilities Director DJ Cacciapuoti, and to the members of Timberline Construction, their architectural team, and the Scalora Consulting Group, who serve as our project manager.
Many major benefactors were present. Among those recognized were members of our Board of Trustees, Gala honoree Dan Passacantilli ’90, Dr. Robert Haddad ’71 and his wife Natalia, the Guinee family, the Cataldo family, the Donovan family, and Campaign leaders Bob Higgins ’64 and Dick Sumburg ’64. Vice-Chair Cantalupa offered additional thanks to representatives of the City of Malden, including Mayor Gary Christenson, Building Commissioner Nelson Miller, Councilor Chris Simonelli, and City Council President Stephen Winslow. Finally, he gave special thanks
to longtime, recently retired Board Chair Jim Donovan ’H11, praising him as the person “behind the vision to purchase the Viking Seafood plant that once stood here.” He added, “Jim has played a leading role in our planning sessions and continues to give freely of his time. He serves as the co-chair for our current capital campaign and provided the largest lead gift of $5 million.”
Advancement Vice-President Hurley then invited City Council President Stephen Winslow to say a few words. He offered greetings from Mayor Christenson and shared some personal reflections about several ways Catholic education had intersected with his life through his mom and other family members, as well as how he and his wife, about 15 years ago, had hosted a German exchange student attending Malden Catholic. That experience, he said, attuned him to the school’s high standards. Since then, he was pleased to see how MC had increasingly extended its Mission to serve the diverse demographics of the Malden community. He recognized the “great partnership” that existed between School and City for almost 100 years (starting in Depression 1932 when the current property had been a dairy farm!). He was confident that “Malden Catholic stands willing to ensure that these new facilities serve not only MC students but are available to Malden residents as well,” noting that some of the lowest income residents were right in the MC neighborhood.
Principal Jeff Smith ’95 concluded the ceremony, recounting the School’s amazing, recent 7-year trajectory from the conception of our signature codivisional model to our being the fastest growing Catholic school in New England. He recalled Malden Catholic’s debt of gratitude to the Xaverian Brothers for inspiring the school community always to prayerfully reflect on the past, assess the present and ponder the future, and he expressed great optimism that the foundation of success of the last 90 years and the opportunity to “spread our Mission” to a new, younger generation, would direct our path toward a blessed and hopeful future.

Malden Catholic stands willing to ensure that these new facilities serve not only MC students but are available to Malden residents as well.
CITY COUNCIL PRESIDENT STEPHEN WINSLOW

MC Launches $40 Million Campaign for Campus Expansion

Malden Catholic launches $40 million campaign to build 70,000 square-foot academic and athletic center at 50 Crystal Street
I would like to thank our loyal donors who continue to support Malden Catholic.
For many of you who are alumni of MC at 99 Crystal Street, you may remember the smell of fish hanging over the athletic fields or wafting through the front door when you pulled up to the school during your days here. Seven years ago, we were fortunate that the families that owned the Viking Seafood Fish Factory worked with our school leaders so that MC was able to acquire the Viking building, a 1.6 acre building directly across from our front door, giving the school a once-in-a-generation ability to transform our campus.
Over the last 5 years my team has worked with our Board of Trustees, alumni, students, parents, and community leaders to design a new 50 Crystal Street, a 70,000 square foot building that will significantly increase our school’s academic and athletic capabilities. This bold new vision creates increased high-level academic programming to support our students, significantly
increases our athletic facilities and allows MC to offer an academically rigorous, codivisional model spanning grades 7-12.
For many years our team and our Board have been studying the changing enrollment trends of Catholic schools in our area, the changing demographics of our area and the changing tastes of parents and students alike. Our plans for 50 Crystal Street encompass all of that planning with a vision for how the school can continue to attract high-quality students and serve the students of Malden and the surrounding communities.
While we have broken ground on the building and expect to be open in August 2025, much fundraising remains to be done to make this dream a reality. I invite you to join us as we embark on a bold new vision for Malden Catholic that ensures that MC will continue transforming the lives of our students for another 90 years.
JOHN K. THORNBURG President

Why Do We Support the Our Essential Future Campaign for Malden Catholic?
MICHAEL A. CANTALUPA ’79
VICE CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

“As someone who has benefited tremendously from an MC education from the Xaverian Brothers, our family strongly believes in supporting the campaign to develop 50 Crystal Street.
This project provides all the elements to ensure that MC is the best Catholic school offering in our area for another 90 years –new cutting-edge academic spaces for our high school students, amazing new athletic fields and a successfully proven co-divisional model now available to the 7th and 8th grades.”
DANIEL J. LAWLER ’84
CAMPAIGN
LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE

“I am a huge proponent of the Our Essential Future campaign at MC, as it represents the dynamic strategic direction and profound forward thinking of the board and the Lancer community. It changes the campus architecturally as well as academically and serves as a billboard to past success and future endeavors.
The Our Essential Future campaign represents a commitment to athletic excellence and academic advancement that would make any Malden Catholic alum proud.“

CAMPAIGN LEADERSHIP
COMMITTEE

“I believe the 50 Crystal Street project is the most significant campaign that MC has ever undertaken, and enables MC to better compete academically with the likes of St John’s Prep, Danvers, and BC High School. MC has always served a blue-collar working community, and the majority of students are from urban areas. This campaign elevates MC to the level necessary to compete with the likes of these schools but also still our nearby communities that makes us great.”
ROBERTO DIMARCO, ESQ. ’91 BOARD OF TRUSTEES
AND PROF. MT DAVILA, PH.D. P’23, ’27

“I can directly credit Malden Catholic and its staff for setting me on the path that has led me to my successes. Those successes are not just professional but also personal. Supporting the school is reflective of the gratitude I have for the school and the Xaverian Brothers.
It is my firm belief that every institution needs to be renewed on a regular basis to survive and thrive. This project is integral to the renewal of the school and is absolutely necessary for the school’s future development and growth.
I am excited by the prospect that our actions today are setting the stage for Malden Catholic’s stability and success for the next 50 years.”
DAN PASSACANTILLI ’90
pictured below with Campaign co-Chair (in memoriam) Mr. Joseph O’Donnell ’62

“MC has a special place in my heart. When I look at the school today, I see students from workingclass backgrounds like me using the school as a way to elevate themselves and reach their dreams. I’m proud to support the school as we expand to take in 7th and 8th graders and provide top tier athletic and academic facilities that rival the most expensive high schools in our state.”
MARK T. CANNON ’73 CAMPAIGN LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE

“It’s important for the same reasons as 99 Crystal Street. Excellence in education for boys and girls grades 7–12. The inclusion of 7th and 8th graders will allow and make happy many MC alumni who have long wished that their younger children would be able to experience the MC academic and athletic experience.“
CRAIG SPADAFORA ’91, P’26, ’27
PARENT LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE

“The continuous improvement of our campus plays a crucial role in attracting a diverse student body. By modernizing our facilities, such as with the construction of 50 Crystal Street, we are not only enhancing the overall student experience but also staying true to the Jesuit education philosophy of ‘go forth and set the world on fire.’
The additional space will not only benefit our existing students but will also provide them with a state-of-the-art facility to learn, exercise, and thrive. I am confident that this development will further enhance the educational experience at Malden Catholic and create new opportunities for growth.”
JAMES J. PERRY ‘96

“I enjoyed my time at Malden Catholic very much and know it changed my life for the better. I love to see the mission of the school continue and expand. I feel a responsibility and take great pride in playing a small part in helping the teachers, coaches and administrators on the ground do the hard work of making the lives of the current students better. Plus Ultra!”
BEN MARINO P’22, ’24
PARENT LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE

“The addition of 50 Crystal Street is going to allow Malden Catholic to provide a brand-new start-ofthe art facility that will provide an array of new academic offerings to its existing students, in addition to expanding its reach to many new students with the start of the new middle school experience.
This new facility will make MC even more competitive with other private schools in the area by providing new start-of-the-art technology for the students, and new and improved fitness facilities for both middle school and high school students.”
MAURA MANN P’27
PARENT LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE

“I support the Our Essential Future campaign for Malden Catholic High School because the school offers a thriving, unique dualdivision religious model that our family values and is unmatched in the area. The school’s record enrollment and waitlist highlight its success and the importance of continued investment in its academic and athletic facilities. Additionally, the new 7th and 8th grades provide a strong foundation, preparing students for high school and beyond.”

ADAM AND LISA CRANE P’25, ’27
PARENT LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE

“As parents to three girls, including two students at MC and a younger daughter, we are thrilled that they have the opportunity to experience MC and all that this community offers. Once we learned how much thought and care went into every decision for 50 Crystal Street, it was easy to choose to support the campaign.”

PARENT LEADERSHIP

COMMITTEE
“As proud Malden Catholic parents and alumni, our family is deeply invested in supporting the Our Essential Future campaign. We believe this expansion is crucial for enhancing MC’s rigorous academic programs and reinforcing the faith-based community that has been so instrumental in shaping well-rounded individuals, including within our own family. What excites us most is the opportunity to extend MC’s transformative experience to middle schoolers, providing an even stronger foundation for young minds to grow and flourish in their studies, faith, and character development.
PETER VAN DORPE P’27
PARENT LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE

In the short time we have been at MC, I have seen first hand what the school can do for the young men and women who are there. Our daughter has excelled in so many ways it is hard to pinpoint one reason in particular. I think it is incredibly important to support the growth of the school, and the plan for 50 Crystal Street will set both existing and incoming students up for prodigious levels of success for many years to come. The opportunities that MC offers every student, particularly with the growth of the school, will transform the school into an elite Catholic institution. Growth can sometimes be intimidating, however, this campaign has not only our family, but countless others, full of excitement, curiosity and pride.”

Remembering Joseph J. O’Donnell MC’62
1944–2024
By Brother Thomas Puccio, C.F.X., Ed. D. H’18
The Malden Catholic community was deeply saddened at the January 7, 2024, passing of Joe O’Donnell, lifelong friend, advocate, benefactor, and unwavering supporter of MC. Joe’s influence on the life of the School was truly immeasurable. We offer Joe’s wife of 53 years, Kathy, and daughters Kate, Casey, and family our condolences and love in this season of remembering. We also celebrate a phenomenal man who was rare in achievement, generosity, and depth of friendships throughout his remarkable life.
The son of an Everett police officer and a homemaker who was valedictorian of her high school class, O’Donnell attended Malden Catholic and Phillips Exeter Academy before enrolling in Harvard College in 1963. While at MC, Joe quickly made a name for himself as a star athlete. By senior year he was a multiple letter-winner in football, baseball, and basketball, recruited by 11 colleges, football captain, football All-Scholastic, All-Catholic, All-Conference, baseball captain and baseball All-Scholastic. He was later inducted into our 1989 Athletic Hall of Fame. Our May 29, 1962, student newspaper Hi-Lite would boast, “Bluejacket star Joe O’Donnell set a precedent early this month when he merited five of the six special category awards presented at the annual sports banquet.” He was also named Student-Athlete at commencement. Boston journalist Roy Carroll in his “Sports Whirl” column labeled Joe as “Malden Catholic’s outstanding everything”!
In the coming years, Joe would garner 6 varsity letters for The Crimson in football and baseball, and he would captain the baseball team his senior year. Following undergraduate study at Harvard, in 1971 Joe earned a Harvard Business School degree and started an entrepreneurial adventure that by 2006 would have him identified by Boston Magazine as the most influential Bostonian, first among “The 100 People Who Run This Town.” From 1971 until 1976, he was the Associate Dean of Students for the Harvard Business School MBA Program. His relationship with Harvard continued through his life as a member of The Harvard Corporation, a director of the Associates of Harvard Business School, a member of the University’s Board of Overseers, and an elected Director of the Harvard Alumni Association. Joe also chaired or co-chaired his Harvard College and HBS class reunion committees for many years. In recognition of his service, he received the Richard T. Flood Award from the Harvard College Fund twice and the HBS Alumni Achievement Award in 2005.
In 1976, Joe founded Boston Culinary Group Inc. (originally Boston Concessions Group Inc.), which, under his leadership, grew into a major food service corporation. The company merged with Centerplate in 2010, with Joe serving as chairman of this nationwide leader in the food service industry. He also founded Belmont Capital LLC and owned Allied Advertising Agency. Joe served as overseer or trustee for many institutions, including Malden Catholic, Boston’s Winsor School, and the
Boston Symphony Orchestra. In 2001, President George W. Bush appointed him to the President’s Advisory Committee on the Arts.
In 1986 Joe and Kathy mourned the death of their 12-year-old beloved son Joey after his battle with cystic fibrosis. They vowed to help eradicate this terrible disease and founded the Joey Fund to raise monies to find a cure. Through 37 years, their stewardship of the fund, now with help of daughters Kate and Casey, has raised hundreds of millions of dollars, supporting research that in recent years has yielded incredible results in improving the life expectancy of those with the disease. Joe became a trustee of the National Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, chaired their successful $250-million Milestones Campaign, twice received their highest honor, The Breath of Life Award, and personally helped raise over $500 million to battle CF.
Joe and Kathy have been extraordinarily generous in their philanthropy. Their $5-million lead gift in our 2015 Essential Campaign, which Joe co-chaired, helped provide the School with remarkable facilities upgrades, including a new Learning Commons and science laboratories. Joe attributed part of his success to the foundation laid at Malden Catholic, once stating, “In so many ways, Malden Catholic helped me to move forward – Exeter, Harvard, Harvard Business School – and to where I am today. Giving back is the right thing to do.”
Joe had an amazing ability to connect with people. Lifetime friend, retired Morgan Stanley Managing Director Dick Connolly, MC’57, who grew up in Woburn, recalls how they shared similar backgrounds: “We had no money, just hard-working parents who gave us good morals and strong values. I miss him every day; we’d speak 3 or 4 times a week. Our relationship started about 60 years ago. We’d often do charity things together. Joe was a patriot. He was gregarious, bigger than life, maintained incredibly close friendships. It was always a great time to be with him. Joe was always great with young people. Kids knew he genuinely liked them.”
Recently retired longtime Board Chair and Trustee Emeritus Jim Donovan H’11 shared a similar impression that he and Joe were kindred spirits, “both coming from blue collar backgrounds, both self-made men, and both believing very strongly that students from Malden, Medford, Everett, Revere, and surrounding towns truly deserved the opportunities afforded by an MC education.”
Joe attributed part of his success to the foundation laid at Malden Catholic, once stating, “In so many ways, Malden Catholic helped me to move forward — Exeter, Harvard, Harvard Business School — and to where I am today. Giving back is the right thing to do.”
He continued, “It was Joe’s Dad, an Everett policeman, who “encouraged” Joe to attend MC, but once here Joe thrived as a leader and student athlete. He never forgot the sacrifices his dad made to make that possible, sharing with me the story that his dad was not too proud to take a second job on weekend nights bagging groceries to ensure Joe’s tuition was covered. Joe went on to become one of the most successful businessmen in the history of Boston, leaving a legacy that hopefully will inspire future generations of Malden Catholic students. Malden Catholic was truly fortunate to have Joe O’Donnell on their team as a trusted advisor and benefactor for so many years. Only a small percentage of Catholic High Schools in this country will ever enjoy the level of guidance in strategic direction, backed up by such generous financial support, that Joe provided MC.”
Former Headmaster Ed Tyrrell knew precisely what that “generous financial support” could mean as Joe co-chaired MC’s 2011 $25-million Essential Campaign. Ed remembers how they first met at the gala before his fall ’09 start as Headmaster: “He walked over, put his arm around me and gave me a hug. (He was a strong guy!) ‘We’re going to make things very successful at MC,’ Joe said. I replied, ‘Only with your help and support!’” The support came in many ways, not the least of which was Joe’s familiarity with local bankers when they needed assurance that debts could be paid. “Everything is about relationships,” Ed said. And Joe was a master! Ed recalls frequent meetings with Joe, where Joe “always talked about MC.” The topics ranged across the Brothers, MC mission, and country. At a visit to Joe’s office, Ed was impressed that Joe had a “big file” on MC, “where we were, where we were going, what we needed.” Perhaps most impressive, though, was the affection with which Joe would allude to the amazing transformations that MC orchestrated in himself and in others, ushering impressionable boys into manhood. Joe would say, “You know, you give to causes and people you respect, but in this case, it’s about the affection you have for the individuals, the people, for MC.”
Classmate and 66-year friend Joe Armstrong (MC’61), retiring as president of Joe’s Boston Culinary Group, felt blessed to “have a front row seat to quite a story.” He reflects, “Joe loved MC. He couldn’t wait to get to school! He loved competition, loved strategizing and planning to win.” Baseball teammates, O’Donnell a catcher, Armstong a pitcher, Joe’s instructions for Armstrong were simple: “Just throw it where I tell you!” He smiles to recall that “Joe traveled with a football or basketball till age 60, looking for pick-up games! For 10 or 15 years, whenever he could, Joe arranged Sunday morning touch football games on the Winchester High School field with a record something like 100 wins and 3 losses.” Armstrong recalls once seeing Joe intensely writing on a pad during a business meeting. When he later looked at the pad, he saw that Joe had been diagramming touch football plays! Noting Joe’s strong competitive spirit, Armstrong relates, “During his year at Exeter, following MC, Joe got to know a Craig Stapleton, who was cousin of the Bushes and who later became ambassador to France. Joe was invited to Kennebunkport one summer, and, playing tennis one day with the two Bushes – the current President and the former –he wouldn’t let them win a game. Stapleton pulled Joe aside: ‘Could you let them win one!’”
Team spirit and selflessness, though, were “second nature” to Joe. Bob Higgins (MC’64), as a sophomore member of the Hockey Team saw it in 1962: “Joe was a senior. Everyone knew him. He played football, basketball, and baseball. Between the periods of our hockey games, we would be given sliced up oranges. One game, sitting in the locker room, I noticed Joe busily quartering the oranges for us. I couldn’t believe that the big, senior star would jump in that night to do our manager’s job. It was a great example for all of us of what it means to be part of a community.” Higgins, Co-Founder of Causeway Media Partners and Highland Capital Partners, on faculty at Harvard Business School, recalls from their later years, “I wrote a Harvard Business School case on Vertex and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Joe
Only a small percentage of Catholic High Schools in this country will ever enjoy the level of guidance in strategic direction, backed up by such generous financial support, that Joe provided MC.
RETIRED BOARD CHAIR AND TRUSTEE EMERITUS JIM DONOVAN H’11

made that collaboration happen, which is why a high percentage of CF kids will now live a full lifetime, disease-free instead of dying before 16. Joe would come to class when I taught it. There was not a dry eye in the classroom when he talked about losing his son, Joey, to cystic fibrosis.” Bob sums it up: “It was never about Joe. He was always looking to do something for others. I saw him change the lives of dozens of people by jumping in and using his immense network. He did that for MC countless times when the school sorely needed a strong friend.”
Students even today knew that they had a friend in Joe, too. Malden Catholic President John Thornburg smiles to recall: “The students always enjoyed it when Joe visited. I can remember him arriving early so he could sit in the cafeteria and visit with students. He would share MC stories, and they would share stories of their own. There was always an immediate connection between them. Joe also shared his deep sense of humor with our students. At an all-school assembly, I asked Joe if he would approve of a day off from school (President’s Holiday). He stepped up to the microphone and said, ”Do you want a day off from school?“ The entire student body cheered loudly. Joe looked at me, and then said, ”How about two days?“ Thankfully, after the students were done cheering, he approved one day. I don’t know what I would have done if he had approved two!”
Mason Tenaglia (MC’74), current Malden Catholic Board Chair and Managing Partner, Tenaglia & Co., observes, “Joe O’Donnell and the O’Donnell family name are found all around MC…. the Learning Commons, the new labs built in 2014, but anyone coming to MC after September 2023 would not have ever met Joe.
Yet his presence is ever felt at 99 Crystal and will be embedded in 50 Crystal as well. Before his passing in early January 2024, Joe had been co-chairman of the Essential Capital Campaign
with former Board Chair Jim Donovan, and no doubt there will be another plaque attesting Joe’s commitment and financial support of the MC athletic and academic expansion. His real legacy, however, has been imprinted on the hundreds of alumni who have followed his lead by supporting the school long after graduation and in the hearts and minds of all of us who have been exposed to him and his undying belief in MC and in the MC community. And to many in the Boston business community, he was our most famous alumnus and the face of MC.”
Chairman Tenaglia continues, “For the last 30 years, Joe has been a ‘larger than life’ figure to all of us who have come back to MC to lead, teach, coach or counsel (Trustees like me). And he imbued all our spirits with his love for MC. I can still imagine him with his right arm wrapped around my shoulder, and his left arm extending out towards some horizon while saying, ‘Mason, this is what I need you to do for MC’ or in the case there was any resistance to that, ‘Mason, this is what you’re gonna do for MC’ (join the Board, write a check, make a call, agree to become a candidate for Board Chair). You simply could not say no to any request Joe made on behalf of MC. No one could, because Joe never could say ‘no’ to MC himself… even for some Herculean tasks, Joe’s response would be, ‘Hey, we’ll figure something out.’”
We remember Joe with love and deep thanksgiving. Friend Joe Armstrong, finally, captures the essence of this extraordinary man, saying, “If you asked a 100 people who were acquainted with Joe for a quote about him, I guarantee you that it would be a variation of these words: ‘He was a smart and tough competitor both in sports and in business, a loyal friend to anyone in need, a great philanthropist and a man who never forgot his roots.’”
We pray that Joe now enjoy God’s close presence and continue to work God’s good purposes from his eternal home.

Leading Beyond Gala
APRIL 6, 2024
On Saturday, April 6, 2024, a sold-out crowd of over 700 enthusiastic Malden Catholic alumni, parents, faculty and staff, and friends gathered at Encore Boston Harbor to celebrate the 18th Annual Leading Beyond Gala — the largest in its history.
President John K. Thornburg kicked off the festivities by introducing Our Essential Future – A Campaign for Malden Catholic, a 40-million-dollar initiative to propel Malden Catholic to the next level of a bold and bright future. The campaign centers on developing a 70,000-square-foot academic and athletic building to transform Malden Catholic and our entire community. Thornburg expressed, “Based on our incredible growth and success, my vision is for all of us to step into the next chapter of the Malden Catholic story – enhancing our academic and athletic programs for generations to come. As Theodore James Ryken once said, ’Nothing is achieved without much labor, effort, and zeal.’”
The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the prestigious Plus Ultra Award to Dan Passacantilli ’90 for going “more beyond” through extraordinary philanthropy, dedicated stewardship, and unwavering loyalty to Malden Catholic’s mission. Malden Catholic Academic Administration Emeritus, Robert J. Bucchino ’70, P’10, remarked, “Daniel has over the past thirty-four years undoubtedly committed to and distinguished himself as an integral component of creating, developing, and maintaining a positive and loving ethos for our Malden Catholic community. Each day, he exercises his talents as a modern-day Renaissance man with an empathetic and caring ear and heart to make his school, Malden Catholic, a better place.”
In accepting the Plus Ultra Award, Passacantilli shared that his devotion to Malden Catholic is rooted in enormous gratitude and appreciation for the education, academic support, and encouragement he received as a student from the Malden Catholic faculty and staff, and especially the Xaverian Brothers.
The 18th Annual Leading Beyond Gala was not just a celebration, but also a significant fundraising event. It raised over $750,000 for student scholarships, ensuring that Malden Catholic education will remain affordable to deserving students, regardless of their financial circumstances.

Empowering Future Innovators: Malden Catholic’s Thriving STEM Program
Malden Catholic’s STEM program continues to shine as a leader in preparing students for careers in science and engineering.
Since the launch of our Project Lead the Way engineering track in 2019, which began with courses like Introduction to Engineering Design, Principles of Engineering, and Digital Electronics, we’ve seen a remarkable increase in students pursuing engineering in their higher education. This initiative has fostered a culture of innovation, where students are given hands-on opportunities to explore and develop engineering skills, positioning them for success in the rapidly evolving STEM fields.
In response to the growing demand for biomedical expertise in Massachusetts, particularly with the Greater Boston area emerging as a biotech hub, we’ve expanded our program
to include Biomedical Engineering. This new track, launched last year, includes biomedical case studies and medical forensics, offering students a comprehensive foundation in the life sciences. Our collaboration with Harvard MedScience allows students to access state-of-the-art medical simulation labs, co-taught by Harvard doctors and educators, elevating their learning experience. Additionally, over 40 students have taken part in prestigious STEM internships and apprenticeships, collaborating with professors at renowned institutions like MIT and Harvard, presenting their research at prestigious conferences and publishing scientific papers, significantly boosting their college and career prospects.

Stacey Sullivan and the Brother Kevin Program: Where Care Counts
By Brother Thomas Puccio, C.F.X., Ed. D. H’18
The Brother Kevin Program is named in honor of Brother Kevin Kenney, C.F.X., a Xaverian Brother who did God’s work by shaping lives, first as Novice Master for the Brothers for 25 years and then as Freshman Guidance Counselor at Malden Catholic for 21 years.
Brother Kevin died in 1990 at age 86 and is still fondly remembered. With a true spirit of love and abiding patience, he used simple daily gestures of care and thoughtfulness to invest freshmen with a sense of self-worth and to give all students encouragement for success. Students who needed a listening ear, a hearty birthday greeting, a ready smile, or a pat on the back found all of those in Brother Kevin.
The Brother Kevin Program intends to give the same caring, confidence-building, academic “pat on the back” to 9th-Grade students who might otherwise be overwhelmed by the transition into a challenging college-preparatory program. It addresses the individual needs of 9th-Graders whose personal learning styles and academic profiles indicate they will benefit from additional support. The program has a long history of building study skills and necessary learning strategies, while offering personalized
STACY SULLIVAN (LEFT) WITH MARIA TOUET
coaching for academic success in high school and beyond. Starting in the early 2000s, the program took successful, dynamic shape under the leadership of learning specialist Ms. Lisa Cenca, who served as director from 2008 to 2017. At conclusion of Ms. Cenca’s tenure with the program and her move into school administration, MC was blessed to secure the services of Mrs. Stacey Sullivan, M.Ed. (Curry College), who has directed the program since 2017, continuing its remarkable success story and transitioning it into the School’s new codivisional model.
Mrs. Sullivan’s pathway to Malden Catholic followed 17 years in the business world at John Hancock Mutual Life (1986-89) and at collections management firm, Walker Associates (1989-98), several years of teaching various subjects at Cardinal Spellman High School and at St. Francis of Assisi School (Medford), time at home raising a family, and 6 years at St. John-Paul II Catholic Academy (2011-17) as a Title I specialist and 1st-Grade teacher. She lives in Canton with John, her husband of 35 years, and children Maribeth (22), Kaitlyn (21), and Sean (20). One might suspect that her experiences as a mom and 1st-grade teacher developed in her the patience, flexibility, kindness, sweet temperament, and empathy that are hallmarks of her relationshipbuilding with MC first-year students!
Mrs. Sullivan’s influences and interactions move in many directions: primarily, with a core of students identified as participants in the Brother Kevin Program; however, she also works with many other students seeking support or referred to her for assistance, as well as with other teachers with whom she collaborates, with School Counseling services, and, of course, with parents.
Last year, there were 33 Brother Kevin Program students – 15 boys and 18 girls. These students delay taking the first year of a foreign language and in its place take small, daily Language Arts classes with Mrs. Sullivan. There, supplemental to their regularly scheduled English classes, students sharpen their language usage and build vocabulary skills, but more than that, the daily interactions with Mrs. Sullivan allow students to “troubleshoot” concerns across a variety of disciplines. On one day a student may be receiving help with conceptualizing a social studies project; another day, tweaking an English essay, or learning note-taking skills, or working on a strategy for an upcoming assessment; on yet another day, getting help with theology homework or making up a test with extra time. Additionally, students may access the learning specialist during their study period. Whatever the task, though, students arrive at their Brother Kevin Program sessions knowing that “they’ve got a friend” in Mrs. Sullivan, who reminds them ceaselessly, “This is important. You can do it. I won’t let you down!” It’s the stuff of enduring personal relationships.
And the relationships do continue beyond freshman year. Mrs. Sullivan happily meets with Brother Kevin students whenever they may express needs throughout their high school careers. Her workday is long! In the run of a day, she may provide academic enrichment to over 100 students both in her formal sessions and by referral from School Counseling or from other teachers, or as students avail themselves of her services before or after school. Pass by her small office in the Learning Commons at 7:30 in the morning or 4:00 in the afternoon, and one will see Mrs. Sullivan working with students. She also routinely monitors students’ homework and grades and stays in steady touch with parents about student performance.
“Stacey is a rock star!” boasts Chrissie Flaherty, SVP, Commercial Real Estate Relationship Manager of Berkshire Bank, and mom of Brother Kevin Program alum Cam Boutin ’23, now starting his second year at St. Anselm College. Chrissie tells us, “We first learned about the program while exploring the private Catholic high school options in our area. Mrs. Sullivan offered to sit with our family to discuss the program. She spent considerable time with us, answered all our questions, and made us incredibly comfortable that this was going to lay the groundwork for success for my son.” And it did! Chrissie continues, “We credit the program and Mrs. Sullivan for the amazing 4 years my son had at Malden Catholic. He was a member of the National Honor Society and got into 5 out of the 5 colleges he applied to – with substantial Academic Merit Scholarships. I am confident that would not have been the outcome if he had attended our local public high school.”
Noting that the Brother Kevin Program is unique in the area, Chrissie sends appreciative kudos Mrs. Sullivan’s way, saying she is “incredibly caring, thoughtful and goes above and beyond to make sure that all the boys are set up for success! She stays on top of their homework requirements and communicates as necessary with the student and family. She was always available to provide extra help, a comforting or encouraging word – whatever is needed. She is incredibly responsive – even when Brother Kevin ends after freshman year – I always knew that she was there when we needed her. Her “homework club” was a tremendous help in settling a student into high school as well.” Principal Mr. Jeff Smith would concur, saying, “The Brother Kevin Program has been huge addition to our academic offerings since its inception. The program focuses on developing organizational skills and creates an academic support structure for those students who need some assistance in learning strategies. Stacey Sullivan has done a phenomenal job working with students in the Brother Kevin Program and enhancing their skills. Her sincere concern for each individual student and her constant communication with parents has made this program a tremendous success.” With praises like these, one can be sure that from somewhere in God’s eternal kingdom Brother Kevin is smiling down on Mrs. Stacey Sullivan for carrying on so well the program honoring his legacy of care and student support.
We credit the program and Mrs. Sullivan for the amazing 4 years my son had at Malden Catholic.

Letter from the Chairman

FIFTY YEARS IN 24 HOURS
Mason Tenaglia ’74 and Chair of Board of Trustees
Late last school year, I had the extraordinary experience of attending my own 50th MC/ GCHS reunion on a Friday night and then the next morning, stood next to MC President, John Thornberg, as we passed out diplomas to 180 graduates of the Class of 2024. The differences between the two classes are quite dramatic, but the reason for each group’s attending MC – likely not very different at all.
My graduating class was largely made up of boys whose parents were first, second and third generation immigrants from Ireland, the Maritimes and Italy. There were three African American students (the Sparrow cousins and Gordon Wooley) and one brave Jewish kid, Lenny Caplan, that were the sum total of the diversity in our class of 153. Girls Catholic was much the same and something like 20 of the combined MC/GCHS class all came from the same 8th grade class at the Immaculate Conception.
The Class of 2024 was visibly different. Half the graduates were young women, most of whom seemed to tower over the boys in the same class. Over 40% of our graduates last year were from minority families and nearly every major religion in the world and every major continent were represented. Latin American, Brazilian, West African, Middle Eastern, South Asian, Chinese, and Eastern European families were all in attendance, as were the legacy Irish, Italian and other grandchildren of my contemporaries – all to see their son or daughter celebrate completion of four years of hard work and accomplishment.
These current parents, and my own, who were Italian immigrants, all were looking for the same thing for their children when they made the decision to send their offspring to MC. And then, as now, the majority of these families had to make hard financial sacrifices (and take second and third jobs) to make it possible to ensure their kids had access to single gender classrooms, a superior academic curricula, the Xaverian tradition, a community of common faith and common values and outstanding athletic programs. The desire for “More Beyond” or plus ultra for their kids, and expectation that the young women and men would make the most of it, is at the core of our success and the importance that MC holds for families in communities North of Boston.
Looking back, and then looking forward gives me great encouragement. The classes of the 40s, 50s and 60s gave us two great Board Chairmen, Ted Legasey and Jim Donovan – and other great benefactors like the late Joe O’Donnell, late Gerard Doherty, Sally and Gene Fama, Dick Connolly, Tom McDonough, and Bob Higgins. This small group who have collectively given over $30 million to MC and a large group of talented and committed Trustees ensured that we made it through the last twenty five years of turmoil in Catholic Education that has seen so many high schools and grammar schools forced to close.
As I look at our enrollment, the steel going up at 50 Crystal for our new athletic and academic facility, the retention of key administrators and educators under President Thornberg, the group of Trustees that surround me, and the new generation of benefactors showing up for our Essential Capital Campaign, I am immensely confident that fifty years from now, Malden Catholic will be thriving. And, I am sure that the prospective parents of the Class of 2074, and thereafter, will retain the option of “More Beyond” for their sons and daughters.

Mosaic Dedication
On Thursday, May 2nd, members of the Malden Catholic High School community joined together with the members of the Musto and Sciola families for a special dedication and blessing of a mosaic of the Madonna and Child recently installed in the Brother Thomas Puccio, C.F.X., Chapel.
The mosaic was generously gifted to Malden Catholic from the Musto and Sciola families in memory of their beloved parents, Sebastian A. Musto and S. Maria Santo Musto GCHS’48 and in honor of their uncle and aunt, Dr. Eugene F. Fama ’56 and Sallyann (Dimeco) Fama GCHS’56. The mosaic, created by the late Sebastian A. Musto, a well-known artist and an expert on the art of creating images with an assemblage of small pieces of colored glass, stone, or other materials, depicts the image of the Madonna and Child. The image of the Madonna and Child has been depicted in art for centuries in both Catholic and Orthodox church traditions, and most notably in the Marian art in the Catholic Church. It represents the perfect love between Mary and Jesus, with Mary symbolizing the Catholic Church’s faith, purity, and mercy and Jesus representing eternal life. Father David A. Campo, former Parochial Vicar of Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Parish and currently training at the Naval Chaplaincy School to serve as a chaplain in the U.S. Navy, served as presider offering
prayers and a special blessing of the beautiful mosaic. In reflecting on the life of her mother and father, Carla Sciola offered the following insights and reflection. “My mother, Santa Maria Fama, was a proud alumna of Girls Catholic High School, Class of 1948. She frequently reminisced about the education she received from the School Sisters of Notre Dame and the enduring friendships she formed. My father, Sebastian Musto, her lifelong companion and childhood sweetheart, shared in her pride for Girls Catholic. His artistic creation of the Madonna and Jesus is a cherished piece that will bring joy and inspiration to everyone who visits the chapel at Malden Catholic for many years to come.” Malden Catholic wishes to thank the Musto and Sciola families for this beautiful mosaic created by their beloved father in honor of the Blessed Mother and the Infant Jesus. This mosaic blessed and dedicated in the Brother Thomas Puccio, C.F.X., Chapel provides deep inspiration for the Malden Catholic High School community in their path to holiness today and always.

Honoring Jim Donovan H’11
On May 9, 2024, at a ceremony alongside Donovan Field in Brother Gilbert Stadium, Malden Catholic was pleased to honor recently retired Board Chair James R. Donovan. Accompanied by his wife Beverly and surrounded by loving family, admiring trustees, alumni, school personnel and friends, Jim received three special tributes. Jim knew about the first two. The third was a surprise!
By Brother Thomas Puccio, C.F.X., Ed.D. H’18
Following words of welcome and prayer, former Trustee Dr. Robert Haddad (MC’71) began by announcing the James R. Donovan Scholarship that he and wife Natalia had created to honor Jim. In his remarks, Dr. Haddad recalled three poignant years in his personal history: 1964, 1968, and 2001. He explained that in 1964, Sister Louis at the Immaculate Conception School had asked him and several other boys to “go down to the boiler room to help as custodians.” There, young Bob met Jim F. Donovan, Sr., patriarch of the Donovan family, for the first time. Dr. Haddad’s story next advanced to 1968, when Malden Catholic moved from Highland Avenue to Crystal Street. Tuition had jumped from $50 to $500, and Bob needed some financial help to remain at MC. Headmaster Brother Robertus explained that there were no scholarships, but he invited Bob and three others, including longtime MC teacher/ administrator Bob Bucchino ’71, to “work off” their tuition as members of a student work crew led by Brother Plunkett Doherty, C.F.X., “cleaning the floors, washing the bathrooms, and make the
building clean for the other students.” The three years with Brother Plunkett, an inspiring Xaverian, had lasting impression on Bob, who today wishes to pay forward the kindness he experienced and to perpetuate the Malden Catholic ethos represented in Brother Plunkett.
Dr. Haddad’s final reference to 2001 marked the year when, joining the Malden Catholic Board of Trustees, he met fellow trustee Jim R. Donovan and realized that Jim was the son of that caring custodian he had met some 37 years prior. As a Board colleague, Dr. Haddad came to recognize Jim’s transformational impact on the history of the School. In creation of the scholarship honoring Jim, Dr. Haddad hopes that future generations of MC students will appreciate “not only that this man made a huge difference in the lives of many, but that Jim Donovan did it right and did it well.” Like Brother Plunkett, Jim will be a model to emulate.
The ceremony’s second tribute, announced by Board member and former Xaverian Brothers General Superior Brother Lawrence Harvey, C.F.X. MC’75, was to name Jim a “Trustee Emeritus.” In recognizing Jim’s 23 years as a Board member, including the last 10 as Chair, Brother Harvey said, “During his time on the Board, his leadership and support have transformed Malden Catholic. We would not be here today without Jim. From playing a role in the removal of bingo for supplemental operational revenue to co-chairing two capital campaigns, Jim has given his heart and soul to the school. He led the school to become co-divisional and facilitated the purchase of 50 Crystal Street. He also provided the lead gift to the current campaign which has enabled Malden Catholic to begin construction of the new building on the site.” To the applause of all, Brother Harvey called Jim forward to confer upon him the certificate from the Malden Catholic Board of Trustees designating him “Trustee Emeritus.”
JIM DONOVAN SR. HON 2011
Jim’s tremendous generosity, strategic vision, and love for Malden Catholic have provided thousands of students an unparalleled education and athletic opportunities and programs.
With unwavering loyalty, dedication, and commitment, Jim served for 23 years on Malden Catholic’s Board of Trustees, with 10 of those as chair.
Jim’s deep belief in the power and promise of an MC education led him to spearhead the Donovan Field project in 2003. Jim later served as Co-Chair of Malden Catholic’s two campaigns designed to strengthen and expand educational opportunities, provide essential capital upgrades, and build financial stability to ensure Malden Catholic’s thriving presence and continued service to students for generations to come.
The surprise final tribute of the day was the unveiling of a legacy plaque honoring Jim. It was to be enshrined at the stadium, joining three others: those of founding Principal Brother Gilbert Cairnes, C.F.X., after whom the stadium is named; 25-year MC track and cross-country coach, teacher, and guidance counselor Brother Myles McManus, C.F.X., after whom the track is named; and Jim’s dad, James F. Donovan ’37, after whom the field is named. These three plaques and the stone pillars to which they are affixed had just been moved to a more prominently visible area of the stadium. However, now there was a fourth!
In his remarks, Brother Harvey shared that, “After serving in WWII, Jim’s dad returned to the area and became the father of a large family: mom Ann, four sons (twins Jim and Joe, John, and Dick) and two daughters (Elaine and Christine). He had two full-time jobs, one of them as a custodian at Malden Catholic. He was an ardent supporter of the many championship teams at MC. He served as President of the Alumni Association in 1959 and 1960.” Brother Harvey recalled Jim’s once saying, “There was never much doubt where my brother Joe and I would be attending high school. From the time we were nine or ten years old until we left Malden, we spent every weekend and many summer days cleaning classrooms and scrubbing hallways to help my dad at Malden Catholic. Football, hockey, basketball and baseball games at MC were the typical highlights of our week!”
God’s plans, though, were otherwise. After 1½ years at Malden Catholic, Jim learned that his family would be relocating to West
Roxbury, where he was to attend and be graduated from another school run by the Brothers – Mission High School. Forty years later, Jim reconnected with the school his dad held so dear in his heart, and during his 23-years of faithful and distinguished stewardship, he guided Malden Catholic through challenging times and, through bold action and visionary thinking, led it along its current trajectory toward a promising future.
Brother Harvey, after presenting Jim with a model of the plaque, which has since joined that of his father, overlooking the field, invited Jim to say a few words. Jim reflected, “I returned to MC over two decades ago to help try to ensure the school and Xaverian Brothers mission my father so deeply believed in had a sustainable path forward. I believe that Catholic High schools play a particularly important role in urban settings, but, as witnessed by the number of closings of nearby schools, it is a challenging task. It is personally rewarding to know through the work of so many dedicated people we have made meaningful progress in recent years. The expansion occurring at 50 Crystal St. is yet another step to make certain an MC education will be available to several more generations of young men and women from Malden and its surrounding communities.”
Jim continued, “Tonight was a very special night for me with the awarding of the Trustee Emeritus medal from Brother Larry and the announcement by my dear friend Bob Haddad of a scholarship at MC in my name. I have found my volunteer work and philanthropic support of Malden Catholic most gratifying and can assure everybody that the ”biggest winner“ in this now 23-year renewed relationship is me. Knowing the mission of the Xaverian Brothers and School Sisters of Notre Dame is alive and well in Malden is what matters at the end of the day.” Finally, referring to his plaque, Jim concluded, “The very last thing I ever would have expected tonight was being honored as the fourth person in MC history to be recognized with a legacy plaque overlooking the field named after my father. Knowing what tremendous contributions Brother Gilbert, Brother Myles and my dad made to Malden Catholic, I find it more than humbling even to be considered for such an honor, and it is gonna take a long time for me to accept being in such esteemed company.“
Thankful that Jim intends to keep close connections with Malden Catholic, we will give him all the time he wants or needs! Following Jim’s remarks, family and friends enjoyed a BBQ collation alongside Donovan Field.

In honor of those donors who have gone “more beyond” through their gifts to Malden Catholic, the Plus Ultra Society recognizes lifetime giving of $100,000 or more. Academic programs, scholarships, athletics, facilities and religious formation flourish at our school because of the outstanding generosity of the Plus Ultra Society members.

Board Designated Funds
Creating a Board Designated Fund ensures that a Malden Catholic education will remain affordable and attainable for generations of students at Malden Catholic. With an initial gift of $25,000, an individual, group or a family may establish a scholarship in memory or in honor of a loved one. Designated funds are invested and pay out an established percentage of income annually in financial aid; the size of the corpus may be increased at any time. Malden Catholic is grateful for those who have created and continue to support these funds. Contributions made in FY 24 are referenced under each fund’s name.

Arlene Mary Boland
Born in April 1935, Arlene was the oldest of four daughters to Michael and Rose Boland of Medford. She was a proud, lifelong resident of Medford, graduating from Girls’ Catholic in 1953.
Arlene was happiest when she was being productive and worked well into her 70s. She held many positions over her long and dedicated career.
Most notably, she worked as an administrative assistant at GTE/ Verizon for over 35 years. She also worked as a unit secretary at both Whidden Memorial Hospital and Cambridge Health Alliance for many years. She held a number of volunteer jobs such as helping out at the election polls and at the local pet shelter.
Arlene believed in hard work and was fiercely independent, never feeling the need to rely on anyone other than herself. She was ambitious and accomplished, often holding multiple jobs while also being a homeowner and landlord of a two family house as a single woman.
Arlene was a strong supporter of women’s strength and independence and led by example. She often donated to Girls Catholic over the years. When it closed in 1992, she continued to support Catholic education through donations to Malden Catholic. When the Girls Division opened in 2018, Arlene had an interest in seeing the progress and accomplishments of the young women who enrolled in the early years. She followed the success of the girls through updates from her sister Rosemary Phalen (Board Member). After seeing the results of their hard work, Arlene decided to set up a tuition scholarship to benefit students who otherwise would not have been able to afford a private Catholic education.

DR. JOHN TRAMONDOZZI ’60
Professor Tram!
By Brother Thomas Puccio, C.F.X., Ed.D., H’18
There are facts, and there are interpretations. “Facts don’t change –interpretations do!” No one, of course, should be surprised to hear this assertion from a scientist, but when chemist Dr. John Tramondozzi (MC’60) says it, he does so also with the conviction of a man who has immersed himself in the everchanging renderings of history, particularly those surrounding the City of Malden.
At age 82, he carries quite a history himself. A rare Renaissance man, who comfortably combines intellectual, aesthetic, cultural, entrepreneurial, philanthropic, civic, and social interests, Dr. Tramondozzi is a well-known figure around Malden. And why shouldn’t he be? A lifelong native, born at home in 1942 in the Edgeworth neighborhood on Malden Street, John and family later strayed only several blocks to Charles Street when he was eight months old. He still lives in the same house. More than that, though, for many years he has played key roles on the Malden Historical Commission, on the Malden Public Library Board of Directors, and in the Malden Historical Society. Throw a stone in any direction in Malden, too, and one might hit a relative!
Born to Italian immigrants Robert and Concetta (Cedrone) Tramondozzi, as the youngest of five children (Maria, b.1935), Antonetta (1937), Odilia (1939), and Robert (1940), John enjoyed the benefits of a close-knit Italian neighborhood. His father was involved in several Italian benevolent societies and offered supportive mentoring to other Italian immigrants. John found that communal bonds with many interrelated families were strong and enduring. Living just down the street from Immaculate Conception Elementary School, John joined his three older sisters and brother there. With all the children doing well academically, John’s parents thought that their education would be better served at parish schools rather than public. Malden
Catholic, of course, was the high school operated under the aegis of Immaculate Conception Parish. John recalls that “it was just understood that if you went to one, you went to the other,” and though “it was assumed that the boys would go to high school and college,” the same educational path was, at the time, considered “not necessary” for girls. Nonetheless, all three of his sisters attended Girls Catholic, and in 1956 John enrolled at Boys Catholic, joining his older brother Bob. In subsequent generations, relatives from Malden’s Hooper family (Mike, Nick, Craig), the DiBari family (Carol, Loretta, Marilyn) and the Savage family (Eric) also attended Malden Catholic or Girls Catholic.
When Athletic Director Brother Firmin asked John if he were going out for football, John gave a quick, emphatic “No way”! He did not want to compete with brother Bob, who was already making a name for himself as a gridiron all-star. Anyway, John had other plans – for newspaper, science fairs and drama performances, where he became a star himself! Enjoying doing comedy and not shy about “hamming it up,” John was perfect for lead roles in Charlie’s Aunt, Three Men on a Horse, and Harvey in Grades 10, 11, and 12.
A top-academic “A-Level” student, distinguished in science, John got along well with all his teachers, including math teacher Brother Bede, Brothers Anthony and Urban, remembered as “down to earth,” and Brother Dennis Joseph, who might occasionally start to doze off in Latin class! The physics lab –two long tables – did “triple duty,” serving also as library and classroom. John recalls 15-minute lunches in the basement cafeteria and that in Biology, Brother Hubert did dissections while students watched, because there was no room for all to participate. John’s favorite teachers were Brother Bede and Brother More, who taught chemistry. Through the years, John was also active at St. Peter’s Parish as altar boy, lector, choir member, and ultimately as a member of parish committees.
Affording tuition was not easy for John’s parents, but they knew attending Malden Catholic would be a wise investment in his future. John worked to help and then had little free time out of school. Weekends were tied up at local Beer’s Apothecary, where he worked with MC buddy and lifelong friend Dick McNeil. (The owner offered to pay his whole tuition if John would become a pharmacist, but John declined.) After Malden Catholic, both John and another lifelong friend, classmate George Bailey, attended Boston College. There, with the help of scholarship monies awarded him as a University Scholar, John earned his undergraduate degree, followed by a Ph.D. in chemistry. He was proud that throughout his college days he had to borrow only $400 from his father.
John’s studies in chemistry were well-rounded, encompassing the analytical, physical, inorganic, and organic, making him an attractive candidate when he sought and gained employment at Curry College in 1969. That started a distinguished 44-year career at Curry, ending in 2013. Over those years, John rose to full professor, Chaired the Science Division for 16 years, introduced a course in gemology, wrote curriculum for other new courses, including one he taught for non-majors, and served for 20 years on a special committee known as the All-CollegeFaculty-Evaluation-Committee, which arbitered faculty evaluation disputes. He is immensely proud that through his career he was on friendly terms with all – students, colleagues, Deans and College Presidents: “I was respected among my peers.” When

he arrived there, John’s area happened to have had two other professors with the names “John” and “Jack,” so he soon became affectionately known to his students as “Professor Tram”! He loved guiding student research.
John has made impressive contributions to Malden’s civic and cultural life. A longtime member of the Malden Historical Society, pleased to have written and received grants for exhibitions, he served as President for 6 years and currently serves as Curator. Since 1980 John has been on the Malden Public Library Board of Directors, serving for many years as Secretary and10 years as President. As Chair of the Library’s Art Collection, he has been a powerful force in curating an extraordinary collection which includes pieces by Rembrandt, Whistler, Corita Kent, and Malden’s own Frank Stella. John has served on the Malden Historical Commission for 30 years, becoming Chair within the past several years. John’s deep civic engagement flows from profound support of the common good. “Anything I do,” says John, “I do for the whole community, the whole City, not for individual interests.”
Malden Catholic is proud that in considering his legacy, John has remembered Malden Catholic in planned giving. “Education will get you places,” says John. “The type of ‘liberal arts education’ provided by Malden Catholic prepares you for life, not just for jobs.” At MC, John came to understand his own learning style. When considering college and career directions, John was confident that Malden Catholic had given him choices: the discipline and foundational skills acquired at MC “prepared you for anything! You could change directions if you wanted.”
These days, John continues his leadership roles in Malden public life, keeps a running history of all the families hailing from Edgeworth, and cultivates an antiques business that has been an avocation for many years. Malden Catholic thanks Dr. Tramondozzi for the foresight and generosity that will allow us to continue to develop in today’s students the leadership skills and social awareness that helped set his course many years ago. No doubt about it… John is a rare gem! And that’s a fact! No interpretation needed.

The Brother Gilbert, C.F.X., Legacy Society
In 2004, Malden Catholic inaugurated the Theodore James Ryken Society to recognize those who have provided for future generations of Malden Catholic students by making gifts through bequests, life income arrangements, and other planned gifts. In 2022, Malden Catholic renamed the school’s planned giving society to honor the legacy of Brother Gilbert Cairnes C.F.X., the first Headmaster of Malden Catholic.
As one who left an indelible mark on Malden Catholic, Brother Gilbert, a native of Somerville, was a gifted teacher and a born communicator with a keen understanding of the young and a deep interest in their concerns. To his fellow Xaverian Brothers and the members of the MC community, Brother Gilbert C.F.X. was and continues to be an inspiration today. Throughout his tenure at Malden Catholic, his limitless store of amusing anecdotes always served as a vehicle for an inspirational message, and his listening skills lent an added grace to a life genuinely dedicated to the hospitable acceptance of others.

As Malden Catholic continues to grow and develop to meet the needs of today’s students and families through the school’s legacy society, we remember, and honor Brother Gilbert C.F.X., who modeled so well the motto of the Xaverian Brothers, “In Harmony Small Things Grow.”

BEST CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL IN MASSACHUSETTS
MC Athletics

Athletics
The look back on the past year for Malden Catholic athletics includes highlights of several notable achievements, including two Massachusetts Athletic Association state championships, conference championships and many teams advancing deep in the state tournaments.
For the third consecutive year the Varsity Boys Basketball team won the MIAA Division II State Championship, which also gave Coach John Walsh ’98 his sixth state championship, and he will seek a state record seventh as they defend their title in the 2024-2025 campaign. Also making history was our Girls Swim program. In just their fourth varsity season, they captured the Girls Catholic Conference Championship, highlighted with Julia Lembo ’27 becoming the first female MIAA State Champion from Malden Catholic, when she finished 1st in the 100 Butterfly & 4th in the 200 IM at the State Meet.
Overall, nearly 80% of all Malden Catholic students participated in at least one sport during the school year including over 90% of first-year students. Among those student-athletes, MC (Malden Catholic) had fifty-four Lancers selected as Conference All-Stars, and several dozen have committed to continue athletics at the next level.
Said William Raycraft, Director of Athletics, “The 2023-24 athletic year felt like the whole of MC Athletics has been on a mission with purpose and drive to succeed. There has been an upbeat in energy that has permeated through the halls on Crystal St., not just from a single team but a collective surge of success. The confidence that comes with success feeds the desire and that coupled with our strong enrollment, breaking ground on a new phenomenal athletic complex, and inking a new uniform deal with Boston-based New Balance Athletics and BSN Sports, and it is an exciting time to be part of Lancer Nation.”

Lancers in Action
The Malden Catholic students continue to give back in community service with the support of the MC community near and far, coming out in incredible fashion. So many teams participated, and supported MC Make-A-Wish, and all our fall teams united to participate in the fourth annual Blackout Week, where an incredible $8,000 was raised for pediatric cancer research.
“There is a strong, proud historic pride in being part of Malden Catholic that reverberates through the campus and beyond. The support shown in the development of 50 Crystal St., where the focus will be on the development of outstanding studentathletes, will certainly accentuate what it means to be part of a special community like MC,” said Raycraft.
The 2023-24 athletic year felt like the whole of MC Athletics has been on a mission with purpose and drive to succeed. There has been an upbeat in energy...not just from a single team but a collective surge of success.

50th Reunion of the Class of 1974
Congratulations to the Malden Catholic and Girls Catholic Class of 1974, who celebrated their 50th reunion on May 17, 2024. The day began with a class social, and campus visit at Malden Catholic, where classmates received their Golden Diplomas to honor 50 years since graduation. During the visit, alumni had the opportunity to tour the school, rekindling memories as they walked through the new hallways and classrooms. They also had a chance to interact with current students, sharing stories and experiences from their time at Malden Catholic.

Following this, they joined Malden Catholic’s graduating Class of 2024 at their Baccalaureate Mass, a moving ceremony that bridged the past and present, highlighting the enduring legacy of the school. The Mass was a poignant moment, filled with reflection and gratitude, as both the golden alumni and the new graduates came together in a shared tradition.
The celebration continued with a dinner at Rosaria Restaurant in Saugus. The evening was filled with laughter, heartfelt conversations, and a slideshow of old photographs that brought back fond memories of their high school days. The reunion was not just a time to look back, but also to celebrate lifelong friendships and the community spirit that has persisted over the decades.
Thank you to everyone who attended the reunion and celebrated this special milestone with their classmates. Your presence made the event truly memorable.
