Letter from the President Welcome to Malden Catholic's annual fall magazine and annual report! The magazine in the past has been called Crystal Hi-Lites, but due to Malden Catholic’s increasing strength and brand presence, we have modified the magazine name to feature Malden Catholic front and center. So, it is my pleasure to share with you our inaugural Malden Catholic Magazine. Malden Catholic is the fastest-growing high school in New England and a remarkable institution that is continuing to transform students' lives through a Xaverian Brothers education. We, indeed, are a one-of-a-kind private school. Malden Catholic is codivisional (separate gender academic programming within one school), which means we offer our young men and women the "best of both worlds" in an environment tailored to their needs, free from distraction during the day and offering a host of cocurricular and social opportunities after school. Our outstanding academic program, combined with our faith-based community, enables our students to become the best version of themselves. To maintain excellence in our programs, we depend on generous benefactors dedicated to investing in our students. I am happy to report that our last fiscal year surpassed our advancement goals. We set a new record for our annual fund, the Malden Catholic Fund, and exceeded the yearly goals for our Gala and Alumni Giving. In addition, overall giving to Malden Catholic for the last fiscal year was $3,535,000, which was $800,000 over the set goal for the year. Thank you to all those who enabled us to have such a successful year! The vital philanthropy we enjoy translates into positive outcomes for our daily operations. Our student retention is 95%, and our faculty/staff retention is 98% from the previous year. Our enrollment has also grown by over 80 students, which has set our current enrollment at 860+ young men and women. With our increasing population, the space at 99 Crystal Street has become tight, and in response, we added two temporary on-site classrooms to accommodate the needs of our students. With our growth and popularity, we are anticipating another fantastic year at Malden Catholic and are working hard to plan the best use for the property we own across the street at 50 Crystal. This property promises to play an essential role in MC's exciting future and will ensure that we remain the best and most sustainable Catholic school in the urban Boston area. Please take time to review this edition of Malden Catholic Magazine. We also encourage you to celebrate along with us, for we could not have made such tremendous progress without you. And, if the opportunity presents itself, share the good news with others. Malden Catholic is a special place, always willing to welcome another person like you who believes in the transformative magic of an excellent school like ours. If you are ever in the area, we encourage you to stop by for a visit, so we can share the energy of MC’s thriving student community with you along with the great plans for 50 Crystal Street. Thank you for your support,

JOHN K. THORNBURG President

Nurturing Students Who Thrive By Brother Thomas Puccio, C.F.X., Ed. D., H'18

One might say that resilience is an essential ingredient in the DNA of Malden Catholic and its students. It is a resilience rooted in institutional history, mission and core values. All of these inspire students today!

8

Theodore James Ryken, founder of the Xaverian Brothers, was known for his “persistent plodding.” Trained as a shoemaker, neither wealthy, nor powerful, nor especially bright nor talented, Ryken let faith and persistence steer his path. Struggling past the adversity of his childhood loss of parents, the regular disappointments in early attempts to find a religious congregation, the No-Nothing bigotry encountered by his first American communities in the 1850s, and the almost overwhelming financial challenges as his congregation grew, Ryken stubbornly persisted, becoming a model of resilience. God was his anchor. Malden Catholic, part of Ryken’s legacy as one of thirteen Xaverian-Brothers-Sponsored-Schools in the United States, was itself born in adversity in 1932, at the peak of the Great Depression. The school, nonetheless, quickly established itself under direction of the Brothers and became for the largely blue-collar, Irish-Italian, Malden-Medford-Everett local community a beacon for academic discipline, athletic prowess, Catholic identity and a springboard toward upward mobility. The school recreated itself in 1968, moving from Highland Avenue to its current Crystal Street location and regionalizing more widely. Students now enroll in MC from over 40 Massachusetts communities and 5 countries. Again, in 2018, Malden Catholic reinvented itself, adding a Girls Division to what had been a traditional Boys program. In what is known as a codivisional model, where girls and boys

learn in separate classes, yet benefit from a variety of mixed-gender activities, students enjoy classes attentive to unique needs and learning styles. Reflecting Malden Catholic’s adaptive resilient style, in five short years the Girls Division has grown to become the largest and fastest-growing single-gender girls high school program in the state. Malden Catholic now is near capacity at 865 students and maintains an almost equal gender balance. Its $30,000,000 investments in facility renovation over the past 15 years have also positioned Malden Catholic well for the future. In addition, administrative courage and planning, tenaciously dedicated teachers and resilient students brought the School very successfully through the challenges of the pandemic. Now in 2023, Malden Catholic is continuing to grow and eager to thrive! Malden Catholic’s institutional resilience is clear, but what about the students? Do today’s students have the same grit, determination and swagger that got their predecessors through swathes of tough times? Yes! Currently, a Senior co-captain of MC’s Girls Swim Team, Thea Sanzone, is a prime example of that. Two summers ago, Thea sustained a terrible boating accident, her arm severely lacerated by a boat’s propeller. Nonetheless, through vigorous rehabilitation and with hope of leading Malden Catholic’s team in the fall season, she brought herself back to competitive level - all while maintaining highest honors in her four Advanced-Placement and two Honors-level courses. And compete she did: Thea not only gained entry into the 2022 State Tournament but she garnered 6th Place in the State for the 100m Individual Breaststroke, and her medley team captured 6th and 7th Places in the 200m Relay and in the 200m Freestyle. This fall, she also won a silver medal for Breaststroke in the 2023 MIAA State Tournament. While Thea’s experience is exceptional, Malden Catholic immerses all students in a faith-based environment that remains faithful to its mission, amidst role-model adults who deliver thoughtful programming that ultimately offers protective buffers to adversity and promotes resilience and tenacity.

Resilience can be taught, and it can be learned. The spiritual underpinnings of MC programing, particularly represented in the Xaverian spiritual values of humility, simplicity, compassion, trust and zeal, shape students toward optimism and hope. They help students to frame life’s experiences as challenges, not threats, to understand most stressors as transient and to reach out to others for support and strength in difficult times. They invite students to see deeper meanings in events and to find peace of spirit in an assurance of God’s love. They also encourage students to embody life-long habits of service. All these, coupled with ample opportunities for worship, promote resilience among a student body that is 42% racially diverse, widely stratified economically and gifted with broad academic abilities. Outlets for service abound. This past year alone Malden Catholic students and families have sponsored a successful Baby Clothing Drive, donating over 400 pieces of baby apparel; a Thanksgiving Food Drive, providing the makings of hundreds of meals; a Pediatric Cancer Drive raising $8,500; an ALS Walk raising $6,700; a Christmas Toy Drive offering over $10,000-worth of toys to Malden agencies. Campus Ministry is poised to kick off a Winter Coat Drive this week. Over five years, MC’s Make-a-Wish Club has raised over $50,000. Annual student Christian Service requirements train students to share talents, practice generosity and honor the needs of others. Additionally, the classroom balance of rigor, care and support further develops students by promoting competence in flexible thinking, time management and organization. Homeroom advisors, leadership training opportunities, regular counseling services, the aid of learning specialists in the school’s Brother Kevin Program and the daily expertise and feedback from talented faculty all conspire to create a culture of resilience where students can thrive. As Malden Catholic students step into a new year, they will do so with a legacy of care beside them in a community where resilience continues to pave the way!

The spiritual underpinnings of MC programing, particularly represented in the Xaverian spiritual values of humility, simplicity, compassion, trust and zeal, shape students toward optimism and hope.

Leading Beyond Gala Malden Catholic held its 17th annual gala on Thursday, May 4, 2023, in the Doherty Gymnasium and celebrated the school’s 91st Anniversary along with honoring longtime benefactors Richard (Dick) ’64 and Lolli Sumberg with the distinguished Plus Ultra Award. Over 300 parents, alumni, faculty, staff and friends attended the live event which raised over $425,000 for Malden Catholic student scholarships. Generations of extraordinary young adults have flourished at Malden Catholic, and our school continues to cultivate men and women who exemplify leadership, character and success. In this tradition, MC was thrilled to celebrate a couple who personify these pillars - Richard (Dick) ’64 and Lolli Sumberg. Dick Sumberg earned his BSBA from Boston College in 1968 with a degree in Economics and History. The draft interrupted his plans for law school after BC, and Sumberg served 6 years in the Massachusetts National Guard. He also worked for his father’s firm selling industrial supplies and tools and went on to earn a Suffolk University MBA in 1974. After his father sold the firm, Sumberg sold life insurance and investments, establishing The Financial Advisors, LLC., a comprehensive financial planning and investment firm located in Andover and Newburyport in 1992. In addition, Dick has served on the boards of the following organizations: Essex County Community Foundation, the Essex County Habitat for Humanity, Family Services of the Merrimack Valley and Edgewood Retirement Community. Lolli

16

Sumberg has a degree from Salve Regina University in Newport, RI, and worked as an elementary school teacher in public and private schools for 20 years. Her area of special i nterest is ancient history. She has been active in several community organizations including the Andover Historical Society, the League of Women Voters and Andover ABC. The Sumbergs are longtime loyal and generous benefactors of Malden Catholic. They are members of the Plus Ultra Society, the SFX Society and the Brother Gilbert Legacy Society. The Sumbergs were also strong supporters of the Essential Malden Catholic Campaign. Dick additionally served on the Malden Catholic Board of Trustees for over 9 years. “All Gala proceeds will benefit student leadership, scholarships and tuition assistance, so we are most grateful to Dick and Loli for their tremendous dedication and commitment to Malden Catholic,” stated President Thornburg. The 2023 Leading Beyond Gala was a truly wonderful event that illustrated the strength and extraordinary generosity of our entire MC community!” Gala proceeds benefit student scholarships and help ensure that qualified young men and women, regardless of family finances, who want to attend MC are able to do so.

At The Helm By Brother Thomas Puccio, C.F.X., Ed. D., H'18

Fridays used to be fry-days on Crystal Street. Come evening, the “fish factory” across the way from Malden Catholic would bring its exhaust stack to life and fill the neighborhood with the “aromas” of deep-fried fish. With the wind blowing the right way, hazy, redolent billows would drift across the football field. Lancer grid men were grudgingly used to it; the opposition, bewildered, so MC enjoyed this - as one of the more unusual types of home-field advantages! Fans would head home, their outer clothing with the faintest hints of having been at a fish-fry and not a football game. James R. Donovan H ’11 was regularly among them. In fact, on many fall Friday nights for the last 22 years, one could find Jim along the sidelines, down toward the endzone of the field named in his father’s honor, surrounded

30

by friends, taking in the action. With the sale of the company, the fish-rendering stopped about 6 years ago. A huge dormant building remained. One can only wonder how often Jim stood on the sidelines over the years and dreamed of acquiring that property for Malden Catholic! But Jim didn’t just dream; he acted on his visions, and Malden Catholic can thank him for the masterful relationship-building and negotiation that led to the strategic acquisition of the “fish factory,” under incredibly favorable conditions for MC - thanks to the generosity of the owners and Jim’s tenacity. Jim is pleased to say that “It provides a footprint for what will truly be an amazing upgrade to campus over the next 5 years.”

There’s a heart-warming storybook tale to Jim’s presence to Malden Catholic today. The story starts with his dad, Jim Sr., MC ’37. After his MC graduation and before starting a large family, he served his country in the South Pacific during WWII. Jim Sr. then became a full-time Hood Milk truck driver, taking on a second full-time job as the custodian at Boys Catholic. The family - Mom Ann, Dad, three brothers: Jim’s twin Joe, John and Dick; and sisters Elaine and Christine - starting from Medford housing projects, made their way to Highland Avenue, and finally to a rental property on Adams Street by Devir Park. Mom and Elaine worked in the convent for the School Sisters of Notre Dame at Girls Catholic. Jim was always amazed and inspired that his dad, despite two jobs, found time to mentor many MC students and be a fixture at any number of MC sporting events. With all these Boys-and-Girls Catholic connections, Jim relates that following Grades 7-8 at Immaculate Conception in Malden, “There was never much doubt where my brother Joe and I would be attending high school. From the time we were nine or ten years old until we left Malden, we spent every weekend and many summer days cleaning classrooms and scrubbing hallways to help my dad at Malden Catholic. Football, hockey, basketball and baseball games at MC were the typical highlights of our week! By the time we were ready for high school, we were on a first name basis with most of the Brothers.” High school plans took a turn, though. The December 14, 1961, edition of Hi-Lite, noting Jim Sr.’s 28-year association with the School, his 1959-60 presidency of the Alumni Association and his occasional officiating at JV and varsity football games, officially announced the family’s departure to West Roxbury. Young Jim would subsequently graduate in 1964 from another school run by the Brothers, Mission High School in West Roxbury. He aspired there to be a teacher/coach and, perhaps, would have been - had Northeastern University’s School of Education, to which he had applied, not been full. Northeastern, instead, happily offered Jim enrollment in their business program, where he thrived as a Finance major, while commuting by trolley for five years. Jim sees the twists and turns of his life to be a lesson for today’s students: that life will take unforeseen, uncontrollable turns, and each person needs to have the flexibility to pivot and make the best of it. That lesson was not lost on Jim, either, years later while at MC’s helm as Board Chair (2013-23). While working his junior-year’s NU co-op job with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation in Illinois, Jim met his life’s love, Beverly Smith. In 1969, just a few short weeks after graduation, Jim married Bev in Peoria, Illinois. They recently celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary. Jim tells us, “As those who know me well would concur, I have asked a lot of her, but she has been my unwavering partner through thick and thin for over 5 decades and is an incredible Mom to our sons Jimmy (53) and Michael (51).” Jim continued work for four years as a bank examiner with the FDIC in Illinois, where the two boys were born. The federal agency graciously transferred Jim back East, and the family settled in Connecticut. “Within a few years,” Jim tells us, “I accepted a senior management position from a bank in New Haven and spent the next decade in banking, ultimately resulting in a move back to Massachusetts in 1984. Once established back in Massachusetts, I commenced my own bank consulting business and subsequently launched a

consumer finance company that was successfully sold to Capital One in 2001. I have been retired since that time.” Jim’s “retirement” offered opportunity for what soon amounted to a “new career” in service to the Malden Catholic mission! Over the years, Jim and Bev have travelled extensively, seeing much of Europe, the Caribbean, Australia, New Zealand and Mexico. “Fishing,” Jim says, “is a passion for me and both of my boys. You will normally find me fishing the offshore waters around Chatham and Nantucket from May to October each year. Until recently, I was an avid kayak fisherman for many years while traversing the backwaters of Pleasant Bay in Orleans. Fishing trips to Alaska, Mexico, Panama and Bermuda have also been part of my experience on the water. Many of those have been with my good friend, the new MC Board Chair, Mason Tenaglia.” After a 40-year absence, Jim reconnected with MC in 2001, and was pleased to see the Xaverian Mission alive and well. That year started his over-two-decades-long voyage with the School as an amazing servant leader. Within eight months, in honor of his father, Jim had made a $1-million gift - matched by a combined $1-million donation from alums Gerard Doherty ’46, Dick Connolly ’57, Joe O’Donnell ’62 and Bob Higgins ’64 - to replace the field and track, today named Donovan Field. Jim soon thereafter accepted the call to be a Trustee. During his 22 years in that role, Jim served first as Vice-Chair during Ted

31

Legasey’s (MC ’63) distinguished tenure as Chair (2005-2013) and then was selected as Chairman. The two proved a dynamic team, steering MC through both graced and sometimes very turbulent seas. Early on, Jim was rather fascinated and distressed by MC’s continued reliance on Bingo for supplementing operational revenue. In those days, MC ran the two largest Bingo enterprises in the state - often with over 600 people attending. The operation disrupted athletics year-round, monopolizing the gym and cafeteria on Tuesday afternoons and evenings, and eventually on Sunday afternoons, too. Jim credits Ted, at a time when enrollment was on a downward trajectory, with devising and enacting a financial plan to divorce MC from Bingo and helping to arrange a $5-million loan that would finance a much-needed face-lift to the front of the building and renovation of the foyer and cafeteria. Jim was a steady resource during those ventures. Jim shares that “trying to fill Ted’s shoes was going to be a tall order!” But, fill them he did! In 2011, the school still rebounding from the challenging national financial downturn of 2008-09, Jim was pleased to partner with Joe O’Donnell ’62 to Co-Chair MC’s first capital campaign. Joe’s lead $5-million-dollar gift, together with seven-figure gifts from Jim and other key players, set The Essential Campaign, originally projected for $15 million, on a path toward an ultimate $22-million-dollar blessing to support badly needed infrastructure upgrades and a refreshing of science labs and the library. Under Jim’s care, these projects were completed by

32

September 2014. In recognition of his accomplishments, Malden Catholic awarded Jim an honorary degree with the Class of 2011. He will cherish it forever! Jim recalls 2017 as a pivotal year for Malden Catholic with his acquisition of the Viking Seafood building and with a visit to a Jesuit codivisional high school in Aurora, Colorado, that crystalized the plans, already significantly under way, for a Girls Division that would meet the local needs for an excellent Catholic girls high school and reconnect the MC-Girls Catholic roots. The Girls Division had its ribbon cutting in 2018 and auspicious launch with Ms. Lisa Cenca leading the girls' program. Over the last six years, with evolving vision and good stewardship, MC’s codivisional model has become a phenomenal success story with a bright future. During the 2021-22 school year, Jim was pleased that the generosity of the Chisholm Family brought the Brother Thomas Puccio, C.F.X., Ed.D., Chapel on line, and a wonderful gift from Thomas (’66) and Olivia McDonough saw the construction of the Thomas ’66 and Olivia McDonough Performing Arts Center. The Board recommended, and the Xaverian Brothers approved, Mason Tenaglia as Jim’s successor this past June. Thanks to Jim’s visionary guidance, the strong leadership of Headmaster John Thornburg, Principal Jeff Smith, their administrative team, and a talented, dedicated faculty, Mason inherits a transformed Malden Catholic, whose enrollment stands at a solid 865 students with boys and girls numbering about equal.

A storied history like Jim’s invites countless memories. Some go back to Boys Catholic days, where Jim recalls, “Many Brothers at MC were friends of my dad and were positive influencers on me. In particular, he was close to Brother Bede and Brother Firman.” Other recollections invoke Mission High School relationships, where Jim says, “I have fond memories of Brother Moore and Brother Conal, our principal. In recent years it was great to reconnect on many occasions with Brother Conal, who resided on the campus of St. John’s of Shrewsbury until his recent passing. A real strategic thinker, he was an invaluable sounding board and resource for me during my long tenure as Trustee at MC.” Jim treasures many athletic memories, too. Probably with no less regularity - and certainly with no less enthusiasm than his father, Jim has been a steady, supportive presence to all variety of Malden Catholic athletics. Never a regular-season stranger to MC hockey games and not unaccustomed to visit a locker room to congratulate a team, Jim savored the many play-off victories during a 7-year stretch of his tenure and was delighted to visit the Garden locker room to congratulate the MC boys and coaches after each of their 5 Super Eight Hockey Championships! Jim recalls with great fondness, too, a deep and caring friendship with one-time Merrimack College Athletic Director and Hockey Coach Chris Serino, which started with “6 or 8 dinners” that enticed Serino to MC as AD and coach, a pivotal moment in MC sports. It would not be an overstatement to say that Jim Donovan is one of the great men in Malden Catholic history. He modestly points to the inspiration of “…life lessons learned at Malden Catholic and Mission High [that] truly centered around my witnessing of the Brothers’ living out their commitment to their charism. Humility, simplicity, trust, zeal and compassion were the order of the day.” (Jim does whimsically wonder now and then which spiritual value of the charism Brother Firmin modeled when he sometimes put Jim or others up against a wall!) Jim is very grateful for “the many friendships I have made with so many of the Brothers, members of the school administration, faculty, staff and coaches. It was their collective commitment to the MC mission that inspired me every step of the way.” One legacy for which he is most pleased is that “… during my tenure, we were able to transition the student body demographics, so they now more closely mirror the make-up of the many communities we serve.”

Looking ahead, Jim foresees continued growth and success for MC and says, “My work is not done yet”! He has learned that “the best thing to do is keep focus on the compass” and to “be true to the Mission.” Jim and Bev have made over two decades of most generous support a blessing in their lives as well as in the history of Malden Catholic. They would encourage, too, the robust support of others. “I believe,” says Jim, “Malden Catholic is the best value proposition for a Catholic secondary school in Massachusetts and has clearly demonstrated that even Catholic schools with challenging urban locations can create highly sustainable education models. With the current outstanding leadership team and continued strong support from our generous benefactors, the future looks very bright for MC.” With a lasting love and deep affection, we thank Jim and Bev and pray that God grant them smooth sailing on blessed waters toward peaceful harbors.

Letter from the Chairmen

LET TER FROM J I M D O N OVA N , S R . , H O N . '11 This will be my last formal message to the Malden Catholic community as I step back from my 23-year run as Trustee, including the last 10 years as MC Chairman of the Board. It has truly been an honor to have been a servant leader at such a special place for the past 2 decades. The 21st century has brought many challenges to institutional leaders trying to sustain a mission focused on Catholic secondary school education, particularly in urban settings. At MC, we certainly have encountered our share of hurdles while trying to navigate through some choppy waters. Contrary to most prevailing trends, I am pleased to be able to say that the school has never been in better financial shape and that I am stepping down from what is now the fastest growing Catholic high school in New England. My personal thanks to all the dedicated men and women who served alongside me as Malden Catholic Trustees. I was also blessed to work with many highly dedicated leadership teams as well as faculty and staff members who never wavered from their commitment to MC's mission. President John Thornburg's current vision for growth is a truly exciting one that will further solidify MC as a true force in Catholic education for decades to come. This vision can only be realized with the support of the entire Malden Catholic family. My wife Bev and I will be actively supporting this new direction, and I hope I can count on you to step up and do your part. My personal thanks to all of those who stood by me and supported MC during my tenure. I wish smooth sailing to my good friend and successor as Board Chair, Mason Tenaglia '74.

L E T T E R F R O M M A S O N T E N AG L I A ' 74 I am delighted to have the opportunity to write my first letter to the Malden Catholic community as the as the Chair of the Board of Trustees. Many of my fellow MC alumni who have traversed the halls of the school in the early 1970s are likely to be surprised to see me back on Crystal Street. During my time at Malden Catholic, I was not an athlete, and MC’s Headmaster, who ran the school during my four years there, Brother Robertus, would be even more stunned with the news - since he was not my biggest fan. However, in my mid-40s, I came to an important realization. As a kid from Everett and son of immigrants from Italy, I saw that Malden Catholic provided me with the outstanding foundation I needed for the life I have lived and the opportunities I have created for my family and future generations. With MC’s firm set of values and instilled sense of accountability - the school has done more for me than any other institution I have been involved with including Georgetown University, University of Chicago Graduate School of Business and my first employer, McKinsey & Company, which is a pedigree that I have leaned on heavily to advance my career in management consulting. My Malden Catholic education and the years I spent as a high school debater, in addition to the experiences I had with other students who were offspring of blue-collar families who wanted something better for their sons, gave me the skills to succeed in the other elite environments. In 1971, MC had just moved from Highland Avenue to a brand-new facility at 99 Crystal Street that had unparalleled classrooms, a sparkling new gymnasium, labs and artistic offerings. We had a television studio! We had a minicomputer! We had all the advantages students from Weston and Wellesley enjoyed. Plus, when we got to college, we were academically ready, tougher and more tested than most of the suburban students who lived on cul-de-sacs. At MC, we also spent time with and shared similar experiences with our sister school, Girls Catholic. The many alumnae with whom I have stayed in contact over the years have excelled in academics, politics and business as well. I believe that MC is an important alternative to the families in the Greater Boston area who want “more beyond” - plus ultra for their children. Therefore, it is essential that we maintain and improve Malden Catholic’s faculty, sports teams, cocurricular activities and facilities, so we can continue to provide a better alternative than other school options. It is for these reasons and more, I have spent much of the last twenty years involved with the school as a Malden Catholic Trustee, Chair of the Finance Committee and Vice Chair of the Board. My wife, Laurie, and I have also made Malden Catholic our number one philanthropic cause. Whenever I have the chance, I always tell my fellow alumni, “Georgetown does not need your money. Harvard Business School does not need your money. Think back regarding how you got to where you are and remember MC in your annual giving.” Please consider giving your gift to MC where it will be greatly appreciated and put to good use in support of student scholarships, facilities, faculty development and programming that benefit all students. In addition, if you have the capacity, consider leaving a legacy gift, as we have. I promise the school will put it to great use! With your help, this will allow us to stand out and remain among the best private Catholic high schools in the country. There are quite a few strong developments in Malden Catholic’s future, and I am thrilled to a part of the school’s leadership team at this exciting time.

Making Wishes Come True By Brother Thomas Puccio, C.F.X., Ed. D., H'18

As the ’61-’62 school year started for Malden Catholic, enrollment stood at 463 boys. There were 125 freshmen, 65% of whom hailed from the home Immaculate Conception parish, 123 sophomores, 110 juniors, 105 seniors, and Jim O’Connor was among them. 38

Brother Joseph Smithers, C.F.X., was Headmaster. Over the summer, four Xaverians - Brothers Dennis Joseph, Colum, Barry, and Martel - had been transferred to new teaching assignments, and three new Brothers – Brice, Larkin, and Roberto – joined the faculty along with young alums Dan Walsh ’51 and John Scanlan ’54. Out-of-parish tuition was $125 with an added $25 in fees. Polling for “Senior Superlatives” identified Joe O’Donnell as “Best Athlete” and “Most Popular”; James Carroll as “Best Student”; Vincent Faraci as “Worst Driver”; and John Mulloy (now Reverend John Mulloy in the Boston Archdiocese) as “Ladies Man.” Go figure!

Jim O’Connor may or may not have regretted the departure of his one-time chemistry teacher Brother Colum. He does, though, recall, “I struggled with chemistry. Marking periods were six weeks back then. I seemed to squeak by with grades in the 70s. Brother Colum’s tests were always multiple choice, and all answers seemed to be correct! You really needed to know your material to get the correct answer. One marking period I got a 90 and was thrilled with that achievement.” Some memories never fade! Now 61 years removed from his Highland Avenue days, Jim remembers the events surrounding graduation as highlights. To start things off, prom-goers danced to the music of Lester Lanin* and his Orchestra on May 11th at Boston’s Statler Hilton Hotel. Several weeks later at the School’s 27th commencement, according to the May 29th issue of Hi-Lite, the Boys’ Catholic student newspaper, “With Right Reverend Joseph J. Leonard presiding, the Reverend Father Joseph G. Deacon, school chaplain, will confer diplomas and various awards.” The ceremony took place in Columbus Hall, the top floor gathering space in the Girls Catholic building. A couple of days prior, a Baccalaureate Mass was celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church.

Gifting is a habit that provides educational opportunities to young men and women that may not otherwise be possible. It is critical to broaden that base of support. J I M O ' CO N N O R '6 2

Hi-Lite reports that Brother Larkin led graduates in singing “Beautiful Saviour” and “O Mighty Land,” before Salutatorian James Dillon and Valedictorian James Carroll launched into their orations, both on the theme of social progress. Carroll went on to M.I.T., Dillon on to Tufts. Jim O’Connor, however, was on his way to Boston College along with 22 of his classmates. A remarkable 22% of his class enrolled in BC that year! As with many of his generation, Jim learned that with hard work Malden Catholic could be a launching pad to success. Advice from scholarly Headmaster Brother Joseph may have been lost on some, but not on Jim, who recalls, “Brother Joseph told me to read the Wall Street Journal every day. He would be glad to know I did for fifty years.” Jim was born in Boston in 1945, attending Gate of Heaven elementary school in South Boston before entering Grades 7, 8 and 9 at Boston Latin. A family move to Union Square, Somerville, led to his enrolling as a sophomore at Malden Catholic in 1959. Brothers Tim and Kevin, a Xaverian Award winner in 1970, followed his lead. Jim made the best of his Boston College days, graduating in 1966 with a business degree and accounting major. “That summer,” he says, “I enlisted in the U.S. Army and became a combat engineer. My first job afterwards was in public accounting, where I spent three years. I returned to BC, then, full time for an MBA, majoring in finance.” Following that, Jim relates, “I joined Honeywell Information Systems in Waltham and

39

did many assignments spanning North America.” After Honeywell came various financial positions at Dymo Graphic Systems, Itek Corporation, Computervision, and twenty years at Eaton Vance Management in Boston. Through those working years, Jim was an avid reader, particularly enjoying the works of David McCullough and Ayn Rand. In his younger days, he was a model train enthusiast. It’s with some modest pride that Jim acknowledges that he passed the CPA exam on his first attempt. “Only ten percent achieve that on the first try,” he reminds! If pressed, he’ll smile and also tell you, “I passed the Federal and State Real Estate Brokers exam on the first try!” Malden Catholic has been blessed that Jim, now living in Naples, Florida, has maintained ties, has been most generous in his support, and keeps abreast of things during visits to the area. At the time of our Essential Capital Campaign in 2014, Jim began the funding of several students with a scholarship established in honor of his family. He noted at the time, “Gifting is a habit that provides educational opportunities to young men and women that may not otherwise be possible. It is critical to broaden that base of support.” That scholarship from 2014 continues to subsidize students today. On a September 2015 stopover, Jim toured the building and was pleased with the recent upgrades. He was also glad to know that MC had remained the strong family environment that had helped shape his formative years and true to its core urban communities. COVID-19 did not keep him away, either. In the fall of 2021, Jim was happy to attend MC’s St. Francis Xavier Society outdoor

40

“under the tent” gathering, and in October of 2022, he participated in a donor reception that brought student scholarship recipients together with their patrons to share their respective MC experiences. He notes, “I realize how difficult it is for some families to provide their children with quality education and quality educators. This can be especially true in the cities surrounding Malden. So, for this reason and others, I established the family scholarship fund.” Surveying the changes that have transpired at Malden Catholic in recent years, renovations and facility upgrades - and recalling the cherished, but very limited building he knew from Highland Ave., Jim says with a whimsical chuckle, “I wish we had a facility like the current one!” Well, in fact, through his generosity, Jim O’Connor has made wishes real for many in our MC community - and continues to inspire the next generation of students. We sincerely thank him!

From MC to Alcatraz and Back! By Brother Thomas Puccio, C.F.X., Ed. D., H'18

According to the Australia Institute of Marine Science, one is 15 times more likely to die from a falling coconut than from a shark attack! There are 10 deaths worldwide attributable to shark attacks, and there are 150 deaths from falling coconuts. That statistic may have been of small consolation to Andrew Chen ’88 early one September morning as he bobbed in San Francisco Bay, where sharks are the apex predator.

In the distance to his right, majestic Golden Gate Bridge stood guard to the Bay, poised above the narrow channel that funnels the Pacific in its daily exchange of powerful tides. The swim from Alcatraz to San Francisco is no game, but Andy was ready to take it on! Andy had committed to a five-month training plan, that progressed from coach, to pool, and finally to choppy open water trials. Along with his brother-inlaw, he was braving it, driven perhaps in some part by the inner strength he attributes to having developed during his days at Malden Catholic. It’s a strength, in fact, that has been a blessing throughout his life. Blessing is certainly what he may have needed that morning for his frigid open water swim from Alcatraz to San Francisco’s Aquatic Park Cove. Just a straight-line mile from point to point, the swim would actually be more like a mile-and-a-half in the sweeping arc that is necessary to compensate for the push of the tide. Play the tide wrong and one would miss the 50-yard gate that opens entry from the Bay to the cove, and it would be pointless then to swim against the current. Happily, Andy played it right and had a successful swim. He made it through the eerie, silt-black, 55-degree waters in 36 minutes. No nibbles, either. Not bad for someone who had just begun swimming in his forties! Meeting challenges is something that for Andy began at Malden Catholic. He chuckles to recall that one of his greatest anxieties as a Malden Catholic freshman was the looming physical education requirement of completing a two-mile run sometime before graduation! He tells us, “I remember as a freshman learning that I would have to run two miles around the track before graduation. I don’t think I had run all the way across a football field before!” What he now, however, claims as the most important lesson he learned at MC was “learning perseverance and that I could do things, including physically, that I did not think I could do.” Such perseverance fortified him both along his career path as well as through the adventures of seven marathons, all in support of the San Francisco AIDS

Foundation. These races have been far-flung adventures – starting in 2007 in Vancouver, followed by others in Dublin, Florence, Las Vegas, Anchorage, and two in Honolulu. Yes, Andy likes to travel! He calls travel one of his passions. His elite status with the airlines as an official million-mile flier, and a passport stamped with 70 different national seals prove the point. Though he is reluctant to select favorite destinations, having enjoyed the beauty and local fascination of each, he suspects that the charm of Italy may claim much of his future interest. Andy grew up in Malden along with younger brother Neal (MC ’90). He attended the now-closed Glenwood School and the Beebe School. When it was time for high school, his parents, who still live in Malden, wanted to offer Andy the best possible preparation for college. They selected Malden Catholic for him. It was a good decision! In retrospect, Andy acknowledges, “The education from MC was critical for my development and truly shaped my commitment to learning and striving for excellence.” That commitment was clear when, on graduation day, Andy stood on stage as salutatorian, “One of the proudest moments in my life.” An added surprise that day was his receiving a perfect attendance award. Andy was amazed: “I hadn’t realized the school tracked that! I still have the wooden commemorative plaque hung in my home.” No doubt, Andy’s parents had instilled in him an understanding of the implicit

bargain that with their financial commitment to his private education, he had better be darned sure to “be there”! Andy didn’t just “show up,” though, and his membership in the National Honor Society, reception of the Holy Cross Book Award, recognitions from the Malden Kiwanis and Rotary, and status as a National Merit Commended student attest to that. His prowess on the Math Team afforded occasional high scorer accolades, and he was MC’s first representative to the American Invitational Math Exam in ten years. The next stop on his educational journey was Boston College, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting in 1992. This led to an entry position at Ernst & Young where he served as an auditor for three years. The rigor of that first job, combined with his personal drive, paved the way for things to come. Other career benchmarks for Andy were several years with PlanetOut, Inc., leading global online media company serving the LGBT community; five years (2005-2009) as Portfolio Controller and then General Manager for institutional real estate firm Jones Lang LaSalle; and finally, a 2016-2020 foray into the rigors of tech life in Silicon Valley as C.P.A. and first head of finance at Grammarly, Inc., the well-known software company for cloud-based AI writing assistance. Now retired, Andy lives in San Francisco with partner of 12 years, landscape designer David McCrory. They were married in Italy in 2022! Andy’s return to Malden Catholic this year during a Christmas visit with family afforded several happy reunions and thankful memories. “The dedication of the faculty/staff when I was a student was inspirational and

remains so today. To see Mrs. Lee, Brother Dan, Mr. Bucchino, and Brother Puccio was amazing!” He recalls particularly Brother Fred Eid’s energetically pleasant style and ability to bring excitement to his math class; Mrs. Barbara Robert’s gift of teaching him how to think in French; Mr. Alan Kaufman’s brilliance and wit; and Brother Dan Cremin’s care and fairness. Don’t mention this to any Eagles at “The Heights,” but Andy found senior classes at MC more challenging than his early courses at Boston College! “The strengths I developed from MC,” he confides, “got me through college, through my first busy seasons at Ernst & Young, and through the rigors of tech in Silicon Valley.” So saying, Andy encourages other Malden Catholic alums to recognize with thankful support the school that nurtured their attitudes, habits, skills and values, providing a life-long navigational compass for success. On his recent visit to MC, Andy was especially pleased with the diversity of today’s Lancers: “The tremendous diversity I saw while visiting the school transformed my view of Malden Catholic and excites me about giving back to the community that helped me at such a crucial age.... It was such a thrill to meet the inspiring new class of students and to think that that was me - 35 years ago!” Well, a lot can happen in 35 years, as folks move from the first-daunting two-mile “marathon” trials to the many-and-myriad marathons of their lives. Andy has learned that perseverance counts in a life that is, indeed, a journey of mingled blessings and challenges, and he is pleased that Malden Catholic helped him to develop the inner strength that makes it possible to transform even the toughest challenges into ultimate triumphs.

FRESHMAN BARBECUE 50

I am thankful for my Malden Catholic experience. Here, I can meet people from diverse backgrounds, cities, countries and religions. I can play sports like soccer, rugby and track with my friends, and I have so much fun with them. I am grateful to be able to make so many great memories at MC! ALE X ANDER ‘24

Antonio Rossi Memorial Scholarship Malden Catholic granted Lisbeth Monteagudo ’25, David Beauvoir ’26 and Jordan Demetrio ’27, three students from Everett, the second annual Antonio Rossi Memorial Scholarship.

The scholarships are each valued at $9,400 (cumulatively over $28,000) and named for the father of Attorney Anthony Rossi, a graduate of MC’s Class of 1990 and Everett native. In 1946, Antonio Rossi was born in Naples, Italy, and at the age of 20 immigrated to Massachusetts, where he met his wife, Gina (Leo). Mr. and Mrs. Rossi moved to Everett shortly after they married and raised two children. Mr. Rossi worked full time as a metal machinist and sent his two sons, Anthony ’90 and Terigi ’87, to St. Anthony’s School in Everett and then to Malden Catholic. Mr. Anthony Rossi, an Everett native who started as an attorney in Everett almost 25 years ago, launched the inaugural scholarships in 2022 and commented, “My dad believed in Catholic education and worked hard every day to support our family and provide us with an outstanding education from both St. Anthony’s and MC. From my father we learned how to focus, apply ourselves every day to our studies and the importance of giving back to the community. I hope my father’s legacy lives on through these scholarships and provides a new generation of hard-working Everett families the oppor-

tunity for a great education and a strong foundation for the future. My family’s goal is to continue to grow the Antonio Rossi Scholars program to four Everett students at MC each year, giving a life-changing opportunity to great students from Everett.” Lisbeth Monteagudo ’25 graduated from St. Anthony’s in Everett and is a high-honors sophomore at MC with a 90 average or above in all classes during her first two years at Malden Catholic. David Beauvoir ’26 is an honor roll student at MC, and Jordan Demetrio ’27 was a high-honors student from St. Anthony’s in Everett and is a freshman at Malden Catholic. Sean Hurley, Malden Catholic CFO, added, “We cannot thank Mr. and Mrs. Rossi enough for their commitment to Malden Catholic and inspirational decision to assist families in Everett. Mr. Rossi has been an incredible benefactor of MC and we thank him for using his success to help hard-working families from his hometown. Lisbeth and David have been great students and we know that Jordan, Lisbeth and David will benefit from the exceptional programming and academic rigor Malden Catholic has to offer.”

I hope my father’s legacy lives on through these scholarships and provides a new generation of hard-working Everett families the opportunity for a great education and a strong foundation for the future. ANTHONY ROSSI '90

Malden Catholic has given me so many chances to be the best student I can be. I have benefited greatly from the teachers, academics and have had the opportunity to do so many wonderful things. One of the most meaningful opportunities I have had was the Summer Internship Program where I collaborated with business professionals, teachers and students. JARED ‘23

Board Designated Funds Creating a Board Designated Fund ensures that a Malden Catholic education will remain affordable and attainable for generations of Malden Catholic students. With an initial gift of $25,000, an individual, group or a family may establish a scholarship in memory or in honor of a loved one. Designated funds are invested and pay out an established percentage of income annually in financial aid; the size of the corpus may be increased at any time. Malden Catholic is grateful for those who have created and continue to support these funds. Contributions made in Fiscal Year 2023 (July 1, 2022 June 30, 2023) are referenced under each fund’s name.

Just Because! By Brother Thomas Puccio, C.F.X., Ed. D., H'18

Don’t let her fool you. When Jeannine Reardon GC ’89 says she does things “just because,” you’ve got to suspect there’s more at work than “whim.”

92

An attorney since 1996, Jeannine practiced law in multiple Federal and District Courts as well as before the U.S. Supreme Court; a published author of three fiction/legal thrillers and a law review article; a background actor in a half dozen films and tv shows including GrownUps2, Central Intelligence, and most recently Free Guy; longtime, occasional insurance law instructor at Suffolk University Law School; Eucharistic minister, assistant MC Mock Trial coach, wife and mother, Jeannine confesses with a characteristic sparkle in her eyes that she loves to seize the day. This defining “carpe diem” philosophy, which inspires her excellence and broad range of achievement, also prompts her to cajole her family into doing at least “one crazy thing a year.” Family Christmas cards often give testimony to the results! A former Girls Catholic cheerleader for MC’s varsity football, basketball - and occasionally hockey - teams, Jeannine has a motorcycle license and a penchant for public speaking and speechwriting. She once flew to Paris for the weekend, “just because”! Few can claim more intergenerational family relationships with both Girls Catholic and Malden Catholic than Jeannine. And she is very much a part of the MC family now herself: since 2020 Jeannine has been MC’s Director of Student Leadership Programs, and her daughter Ashley is a member of MC’s Class of 2023.

Born in Melrose, April 1971, “back in the 1900s,” as her children say, and living in Stoneham while attending GC, Jeannine McNaught, along with her sisters Jerelyn and Suzanne, and her brother Stephen (MC ’01), hailed from distinguished Malden Catholic pedigree. With “Mc” right in her name, how could it be otherwise! Her grandfather, the Honorable Judge John J. McNaught, was a Malden Catholic pioneer in the 4th graduating Class of 1939, and her dad, Stephen R. McNaught, Esq., was MC Class of 1965. “I was incredibly familiar with MC since so many young men in my family automatically went there,” says Jeannine. “My cousin, MC grad Paul Duffy ’47 was the resident dentist for the local Xaverian Brothers. When it was my turn to go to high school, I had two choices: Girls Catholic or Stoneham High. I took the test for Girls Catholic and signed on the dotted line without looking back.” Jeannine enjoyed four incredibly rewarding years at Girls Catholic, building lifetime friendships, discovering academic talents and immersing herself in all the opportunities afforded her, at both GC and MC. These included things like visiting Shriner’s Hospital in Boston before the Shriner’s football game, becoming a firsttime varsity softball player in the last semester of her senior year, parading with fellow cheerleaders at the 1988 dedication ceremony of Brother Gilbert Stadium, acting in GC drama productions staged in MC’s Hayes Auditorium and as President of the National Honor Society collaborating with the boys’ NHS in an American Heart Association Phonathon. At the field dedication, she was thrilled to hear several family members, including her grandfather, among the speakers. Jeannine relates, “The next time I was on that field I was a Girls Catholic guest speaker for the Class of 2022 graduation, our first codivisional graduation. I stood in the same spot as my grandfather before a crowd of over 1,000 people and delivered an address on behalf of the GC alumnae. It was one of the biggest honors of my life, and I felt my grandfather on the stage with me. My GC sisters sent me so many amazing messages, thrilled to share this incredible moment with me.”

...I was a Girls Catholic guest speaker for the Class of 2022 graduation, our first codivisional graduation. I stood in the same spot as my grandfather before...It was one of the biggest honors of my life... J E A N N I N E M C N AU G H T R E A R D O N ESQ. GC '89 P'23

Through those extracurricular associations with Malden Catholic, Jeannine started friendships with MC faculty members like Brother Fred Eid and with others still on the scene today. She recalls, “The teachers at MC adopted GC students as their own. I met Ms. Angela Lee during drama, and she always checked in on us to make sure we were doing okay in our English classes. During practice, if we weren’t needed on stage, we would often do homework in the multicolored chairs with the movable desktops.” National Honor Society moderators Brother Thomas Puccio and Ms. Anne Shields got both clubs together for a fundraiser staged at the phone banks of a downtown Malden Bank. Remembering that day, Jeannine says, “Another of

94

my fondest memories, was working with MC’s NHS Chapter on a joint effort between our schools to raise funds for the American Heart Association. Brother Puccio taught us how to fundraise. Well, at least I can say he taught me! We raised $2,250 cold-calling people on various lists. By collecting $5 here, $10 there... the funds added up quickly. We collected a lot of money for back then! It’s funny, as I get older and understand the importance of heart health, I appreciate that fundraiser more. Brother Tom and Ms. Shields set a life lesson in motion that is still teaching us all! My favorite memories are ones that I can look back on with a different perspective and still learn from them. This is definitely one of them.” Those big hair, puffy-prom-dress Girls Catholic days with wonderful friends like Pam Benzan, Elle Fitzgerald, Dina Campea and Terri Costantino taught Jeannine many things: “GC taught me that we all matter. We are all important. It is okay to ask questions, make mistakes and challenge the norm. It’s also important to give back to the community and help one another whenever we can.” The impact of the Girls Catholic experience was transformational for Jeannine. “Studying in a single gender environment,” she stated, “gave me confidence. Confidence is critical in a world with so many challenges.” Such confidence fueled her courtroom practice, allowed her to propose new legislation and to offer legislative testimony for public safety and today inspires her caring efforts to mentor MC students, so they can call forth their best selves. Following her days at Girls Catholic, Jeannine attended Suffolk University, graduating Summa Cum Laude (B.S. Communications/Pre-Law, 1993), interned with her dad and uncles in the family law practice, McNaught, Moriarty & McNaught, P.C. and went on to Suffolk University Law School, graduating in 1996. General practice in Boston with Shriberg & Sorbello, P.C., led to criminal law with Robert Saltzman, Esq. and finally a partnership in her own firm, Saltzman & McNaught, LLP. Jeannine transitioned out of that practice in 2003 when she married fellow Suffolk and Suffolk-Law alum David Reardon, and they moved to D.C. for David to assume a position as an inspector-attorney with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. The family returned to Massachusetts in 2010, when David transferred back to the Boston Division, where he is now Assistant Inspector-In-Charge. They currently live in Saugus with daughter Ashley ’23, and son Sean, age 12, a 7th grader at St. Mary’s in Melrose. Mock Trial State Championship Team member Ashley starts at the Catholic University of America this year. One of Jeannine’s proudest moments was in May 20, 2023, when dressed in her doctoral robe, her father in audience, she presented Ashley a Malden Catholic diploma and culminated four generations of GC and

MC legacy. A bridge connecting the magnificent Girls Catholic heritage with today’s Malden Catholic, Jeannine continues daily to breathe the life of GC spirit into the latest generation of MC students. She continues, too, a family tradition of giving and encourages her GC sisters to invest in the vitality of a Catholic education in the Xaverian tradition. Though many years elapsed between her graduation and Ashley’s, Jeannine says, “Our family has always continued to give because we believe in the mission and see the results of what the school does for its students and the community.” Ashley, the first goalkeeper for MC Girls Varsity Field Hockey and Lacrosse, wore #39 each Lacrosse season “defending the house.” “Ironically,” Jeannine relates, “the number on the jersey came when Ashley needed an oversized shirt to cover her gear. Coach Raycraft sent out an extra football jersey with the number 39 on it, not knowing it was the year my grandfather graduated!” Jeannine may call it “irony,” but - though no experts about God’s plans - we might surmise that this and so much else on Jeannine’s zestful journey didn’t happen “just because”!

A bridge connecting the magnificent Girls Catholic heritage with today’s Malden Catholic, Jeannine continues daily to breathe the life of GC spirit into the latest generation of MC students. J E A N N I N E M C N AU G H T R E A R D O N ESQ. GC '89 P'23

Brother Gilbert, C.F.X., Legacy Society In 2022, Malden Catholic renamed the school’s planned giving society to honor the legacy of Brother Gilbert Cairnes, C.F.X., first Principal of Malden Catholic. As one who left an indelible mark on Malden Catholic, Brother Gilbert, a native of Somerville was a gifted teacher, a born communicator, with a keen understanding of the young and a deep interest in their concerns. To his fellow Xaverian Brothers and to the members of the MC community, Brother Gilbert, C.F.X., was and continues to be an inspiration today. Over the course of his tenure at Malden Catholic, his limitless store of amusing anecdotes always served as a vehicle for an inspirational message, and his listening skills lent an added grace to a life genuinely dedicated to the hospitable acceptance of others. Daily references are known today by alumni and friends that refer to the great legacy of Brother Gilbert, C.F.X., which is the name of the school’s stadium and the school’s Chapter of the National Honor Society to name a few. As Malden Catholic continues to grow and develop to meet the needs of today’s students and families through the school’s legacy society, we remember and we honor Brother Gilbert, C.F.X., who modeled so well the motto of the Xaverian Brothers, “In Harmony Small Things Grow.”.

When you join the Brother Gilbert, C.F.X., Legacy Society, you demonstrate your commitment to current and future Malden Catholic students. Your planned gift is a wonderful way to honor the dedication and commitment of the Xaverian Brothers and Malden Catholic’s dedicated lay teachers. A planned gift is an inspiration to future generations and a reminder of the philanthropy that sustains Malden Catholic. By giving back through a bequest or a planned gift, Brother Gilbert, C.F.X., Society members demonstrate dedication and loyalty that transcends time and greatly strengthens the position of Malden Catholic for many years to come. Members of the Brother Gilbert, C.F.X., Society have indicated in writing that they have made special provisions for Malden Catholic in their estate plans. In addition to being a meaningful gift to MC, planned giving helps to reduce or eliminate taxes on capital gains and federal estate taxes for the donors. Please check with your financial advisor or accountant for more details on arranging for a planned gift and the personal benefits associated with that charitable gift.

Paying it Forward By Brother Thomas Puccio, C.F.X., Ed. D. H'18

Who remembers American Bandstand? Richard Couture ’58 has a by-line in the November 22, 1957, edition of MC’s student newspaper Hi-Lite, where his column “Giving ’em The Needle” reports on television’s impact on record sales. He cites Bandstand as a hit-maker and goes on to predict what songs will be topping the record charts: “Among the latest releases,” he asserts, “probably the most successful ones will be: You Send Me (Sam Cooke), Little Bitty Pretty One (Thurston Harris and the Sharpes), Pat Boone’s April Love, The Cricket’s Oh Boy and the fast moving Peggy Sue by Buddy Holly (the lead singer of The Crickets).” He concludes by reminding that “Elvis continues to top the list with Jailhouse

98

Rock and Treat Me Nice.” Later in his senior year, in HiLite’s June edition, Richard reprises in game-by-game, full-season detail MC-baseball’s Blue Jackets performance that gained them entry to tournament play. It’s no surprise, then, that Richard recalls today how the careful attention to detail and the writing skills acquired on Highland Avenue proved valuable to his professional career as an auditor. “Crafting concise accounts and accurate columns,” he says, “paid off for me in public

accounting. Corresponding with clients, recording audit conclusions in working papers, drafting footnotes for clients’ financial statements, writing articles for Firm publications and being selected to rewrite/update a chapter in the Firm’s auditing textbook Montgomerys Auditing, circulated in Firm and sold nationally, all were products resulting from that senior-year initiative.” Richard was born in Everett and grew up in Melrose along with sisters Claire, Katherine and Mary, and brothers Joseph and Robert (deceased). After completing Grades 3-8 at St. Mary’s School in Melrose, he made his way to Malden Catholic. It was, in part, a practical choice. “As I was the oldest,” he says, “my parents wanted me to continue with a Catholic education for high school. Several of my grade-school graduates went on to M.C. There were many Catholic high schools in greater Boston at that time, but MC was closest and easy for commuting.” Richard recalls, “The most important lesson I learned by attending Malden Catholic was to be responsible for my actions. I had a scholarship that I believed required my full attendance and commitment to learning during the four years.” Richard wanted to create an opportunity to enter a top college, and he didn’t let minor setbacks distract him. He remembers that once, “I tried out for the baseball team as an outfielder. The coach did not see a future for me as a player, but he asked me to stay on to help the other outfielders as a “fungo” batter, launching fly balls all over the outfield to create in-game situations for them.” The outcome was quick and simple: “I declined!” His academic focus, however, paid off, and Richard recalls his most memorable MC moment as graduating with honors among the top students of

his Class of 1958, on his way to Boston College with scholarship. There he very successfully majored in accounting, earning his B.S. degree in 1962. If one were to ask Richard about his work life, he would say he had just two careers all his life. “To earn high school and college tuitions,” he says, “I worked independently as a yard-care provider, shoveling snow, and performing other odd jobs, until I joined First National Stores for six years, working as many hours as I could get. My second career began in 1962 in public accounting with the same firm up to February 28th, 2010, when I retired.” That firm itself went through several transformations during Richard’s 48 years with them: Lybrand, Ross Bros. Montgomery, renamed Coopers & Lybrand, which then merged into PriceWaterhouseCoopers LLP (PWC). Richard was pleased that his early diligence prepared him to pass the CPA exam with “flying colors” and that during his long “second” career he had demonstrated such professional acumen that he was

“assigned to top clients, earned their respect and on several occasions bailed them out with findings they were unaware of.” One client of note was the Archdiocese of Boston, where Richard was one of the leaders on the team that conducted their first audit, helping to develop financial statements and accompanying notes. He also personally visited parishes to inspect their financial records. There he provided tremendous service in meeting with pastors who often had little-to-no training or experience in financial record keeping, and who certainly had never been audited! What Richard found most rewarding about his profession, he says, “was being part of many audit teams for a plethora of industries, with over 200 clients such as Raytheon, Brandeis University, United Shoe Machinery, Scudder Funds and Frank Russell Funds, just to name a few. Being able to assist client personnel, train and lead new and seasoned staff members and observe their growth were all by-products of this experience.” It wasn’t all work and no play for Richard. He continues to curate today a stamp collection that has been growing since college, specializing in United States stamps as well as topical stamps (golf, hockey, etc.) from around the world. Hockey has also been a strong interest. “I became a fan of the NHL,” he says, “eventually becoming a long-term Bruins’ season ticketholder in 1965. I played for twenty years in local men’s hockey leagues. My prime interest,” he continues, “became golf, having two memberships and playing over 235 golf courses throughout the U.S. and Canada, and 27 in Ireland and Scotland.”

100

An active supporter of Catholic education for many years, Richard realizes the importance of generosity today that will continue far into the future. His planned giving helps address that interest. “With all the closings of Catholic schools since 2000,” he reminds us, “it is important for families with Catholic learning aspirations to contribute to the remaining institutions such as MC, who are prepared and capable of continuing the rich tradition of Catholic education.” He is pleased that Malden Catholic has assumed a leadership role in Boston-area Catholic education by recent program enhancements, facility upgrades, the development of the Girls Division and consideration of middle-school possibilities. “My support of MC,” Richard says, “has been inspired by its growth and commitment to leadership in Catholic education from 2010 when I began increasing my annual commitment to the School, principally with the Couture Family Scholarship Fund.” Thankful for the steady foundation of values, skills, and habits that he nurtured in youth at Malden Catholic, Richard is pleased to “pay it forward” for new generations of students who will benefit from his thoughtful giving. It amounts to a legacy of love! Malden Catholic is hopeful that Richard’s on-going kindness will inspire others to similar acts of investment in students’ futures. We thank Richard and the Couture family for their appreciation and support of Malden Catholic’s mission!

Lancers In Action

The Lancers took to the fields, courts, track, ice and pool in 2022-2023 with great energy and enthusiasm! As a result, the school year was highlighted with numerous team and individual accomplishments and momentous events. Since over 70% of the enrolled students participate in an interscholastic athletic program, this strong participation has allowed Malden Catholic to experience great success and expand its offerings to 56 active teams during the three seasons.

MC’s Lancers received a 2022 - 2023 MIAA Excellence in Sportsmanship acknowledgement at the MIAA Sportsmanship Summit held at Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, MA which was a special accomplishment that was enjoyed by the entire community. This was the second consecutive MIAA Excellence in Sportsmanship recognition for Malden Catholic. According to William Raycraft, MC Athletic Director, “I have observed that over the past two years, the Lancers are on a mission of success. While attending Malden Catholic, students have always demonstrated a historic pride, especially in certain programs. But now, the enthusiasm and drive has truly filtered across all sports programs. The school has incredible enrollment and sports participation and consequently, confidence and athletic skills are skyrocketing. It’s a great time to be part of Lancer Nation.” 103

Second Consecutive MIAA Boys Basketball State Champions Last year the Malden Catholic Boys Basketball team created history as they captured Malden Catholic’s second MIAA DII State Basketball Championship. The Lancers built on their legacy from the previous year and returned to the Division 2 State Finals as the #1 seed, knocking off #2 Mansfield High School 72-54 at the Tsongas Center, finishing 23-2 (8-2 Catholic Conference). This is Coach John Walsh’s ’97 5th overall state championship win. The Lancers held the top spot in the Division II rankings throughout the season and had home court advantage throughout as they defeated Northampton HS 82-43, Scituate HS 76-58, Leominster HS 55-38 to earn a spot in the MIAA Final Four where they defeated Charlestown 66-54 enroute to the finals appearance with Mansfield High School. As a result, the Lancers earned their State Championship hardware, a police and fire escort through Malden and their second championship ring.

Alumni Spotlight Nick Gennetti '02, has been appointed as the CEO of The Herb Chambers Companies. His journey from Malden Catholic to this prestigious role is a testament to his dedication and the transformative power of education.

Nick attributes his success to the valuable lessons he learned at Malden Catholic. His commitment to MC’s institution's principles and teachings has guided him to this remarkable milestone. As a steadfast supporter of Malden Catholic, Nick acknowledges his deep gratitude to the school and its stewards for the lasting impact they've had on his life. How does it feel to be named CEO of Herb Chambers? It still feels a bit surreal. For those who know me, they understand that this is a lifelong dream come true. When I first learned of my new role, I was completely awe-

114

struck, but that feeling was quickly replaced by a sense of incredible responsibility and gratitude. Working for Herb Chambers, the person, is truly a privilege. He is not only a tremendous businessman but also an exceptional human and leader. It will forever be an honor to work for him and to serve all his team members in this capacity. What are the most challenging and rewarding aspects of your new role? There are many challenges that come with this role, but managing time has become the most challenging of all. I have always been a "workaholic," but I am also a husband and father of three young boys. Balancing my career and family life can be challenging at times.

The most rewarding aspect is having the ability to help influence and grow the careers of others while watching them improve their lives and the lives of their families. I was fortunate to have a few mentors who did this for me, and I feel a responsibility to "pay it forward" and do the same for others. Do you feel that MC has contributed to your professional and personal success? Malden Catholic made a tremendous impact on my life. It prepared me for adulthood, for which I will always be grateful. Unfortunately, my father passed away when I was eleven years old, and my mother was diagnosed with late-stage breast cancer during my senior year. She passed away not long after graduation. The immediate life challenges that followed were difficult. I quickly needed to enter the professional world while trying to continue my education. My MC education provided me with a strong work ethic and a drive to always go above and beyond, or as we say, "more beyond." I credit my professional and personal success to consistently delivering results that exceed expectations, which is what our motto, "Plus Ultra," is all about. Is there something you will always remember from your high school experience? I have so many experiences and teachers that I will always remember, many of whom are still there! I had the pleasure of running into Ms. Angela Lee this summer while vacationing in Maine with my family. She, like many others, is invaluable to the school and to the entire MC community.

What would be your advice to current students? George Bernard Shaw once said, "youth is wasted on the young." While I don't completely agree with him, there is some truth to this statement. No matter what stage in life we are in, we are always thinking about and worrying about the next phase in our life journey. The best advice I can give to students is to truly enjoy your time at Malden Catholic. Be present and relish every moment of your high school experience. How do you feel about the MC internship program? The MC Internship Program provides a great opportunity for students to experience the professional world firsthand. I often tell the story of the first MC intern I worked with. On this intern’s first day with me, he quickly realized that working in a business position was not for him. He told me that business was the "safe bet," and he disliked sitting at a desk and being in an office. I asked him what he was passionate about and he said "aviation." He had always wanted to be a pilot. I connected him with someone in the aviation field who showed him several private aircrafts and provided insight into fouryear aviation and aerospace programs. I am still in touch with this fellow alum today, and I am pleased to report that he is in his senior year working toward his commercial pilot's license.

I often think about the camaraderie of my classmates and all the fun we had during our journey together. There are countless stories that still make me smile to this day. I will never forget those times, and I wouldn't trade them for anything.

Time Capsule The Ricardian — The 1992 final edition of the Girls Catholic yearbook includes a chronology of key events in the 84-year history of the school. Its entry for May 1933 tells us, “The first issue of the school newspaper, The Ricardian, named for Monsignor Richard Neagle, appeared. Short stories, poems, class wills and prophecies were published, as well as reports of activities such as Sodality, Catholic Students Mission Crusade, school retreats, Columbia Press Conventions, College Boards, Auxilium Latinum and Know-English contests. Until the 1960s it also contained news of graduates entering religious communities. The Ricardian continued publication until March 1979.” For several years in the 1940s, the publication became a joint Girls Catholic and Boys Catholic collaboration. The April 1942 articles by Boys Editor John Nicholson and Girls Editor Barbara Dewey reproduced here remind us of the power of faith and prayer during the troubled days of World War II. 120

Prayer

And A Light Shone Forth

Boys’ Editor – April 1942

Girls’ Editor – April 1942

Now, more than ever before, is the necessity for earnest and wholehearted prayer evident. With famine, fire and fear gutting and covering the entire earth, the only hope remaining in the world is that all nations to their respective religions and worship their God in the manner that their conscience dictates. Toleration must be found everywhere, racial and religious prejudice must be wiped out, the spirit of piety must reign supreme. But before such serenity and calmness can return to the earth, the forces that are now threatening to obliviate every semblance of religions and belief in God must die. The reason is obvious; only in the doctrines of Christ can the lasting peace and happiness that the tired, old world seeks so diligently, return for ever.

From a massive wall of solid stone, brilliant white light broke forth upon the still approach of breaking day. The stone gave way making a wide opening into the deep, somber vault which, apparently, had once been a burial tomb. Suddenly, a figure emerged. It was straight and tall and wrapped entirely in a winding cloth of purest white. A long thin hand fell by its side showing the cruel remains of an inhuman, hole-like gash in a white palm. The figure moved - and the light moved with it. It walked slowly, as though each step held its own precious, inconceivable meaning and worth. It walked steadily, each step pressing the ground in a firm, triumphant embrace. The entire aspect of the form gave the appearance of silent profound exultation - like a man returned from the dead, breathing new life, tasting lasting victory. He was the man who had suffered shame, ignominy, torture, anguish at the savage hands of ignorant men. He was the same man who now walked securely in the paths of triumph and joy and who flouted the heinous deeds of His persecutors by the brilliant perfection of His Resurrection.

Now that the United States is at war, now that its forces are fighting on the seven seas and the five continents, locked in deadly conflict with the champions of evil and hate, the appeal rises to every American to do his share in this all-out effort for victory. For it is only natural that America should play such an important part in this theatre of war since she is the home of the free and the refuge of the oppressed. Youth will not let this cry for help go unheeded. It will meet the challenge with great alacrity. We, while attending high school, find our efforts to help our country in a material way rather limited. Besides buying defense stamps, when our finances allow it, and complying with all rules and regulations set down by the Office of Civilian Defense, there is not much more we can do. But there is one way we can really help. We can pray! We can pray with all the fervor and devotion we possess, that the Almighty God will watch over our leaders in the Nation’s Capital, our soldiers in the foxholes of Bataan on the heat scorched plains of Australia and in the damp bogs of Ireland; that they will go forth in renewed courage and strength and confident of ultimate victory. For this is a just war, and God looks after the just. Always remember godlessness never triumphs for long over godliness.

Jesus Christ, the world’s great Redeemer, the perfect example of endurance, patience, humility and suffering is the one and only force of Good in whom the world, in its present chaos, can find final peace and contentment. He is our only refuge. He, our only shelter. Through Him, alone, will the rapacious leaders of subversion and ruin be brought to cower at our feet – through Him, alone, will the rising apostles of peace and happiness be permitted to continue the building of future destines and lines. It is to Jesus Christ, then the Victim and Victor, the mockery of Good Friday and the glory to Easter Sunday, the “criminal” who wore the crown, the king who bore the palms – it is to Him that we – you and I and the whole world must come as lowly, weary suppliants to beg His Godly help.
