FIRST DAY HIKE ON JANUARY 1

Kick off the New Year with a refreshing First Day Hike on January 1, a tradition embraced by outdoor enthusiasts to celebrate new beginnings and the beauty of nature. Central Virginia offers a variety of trails, from serene woodland paths to more challenging ascents with sweeping views. Peaks View Park, Blackwater Creek Trail, and nearby state parks provide excellent options for hikers of all levels to start the year on a healthy and mindful note. Whether joining a guided hike or heading out solo, a First Day Hike is the perfect opportunity to reflect on the past year while setting intentions for the one ahead.

WINTER HIKING IN LYNCHBURG AND CENTRAL VIRGINIA KEY CONSIDERATIONS

Hiking in winter offers unique rewards—crisp air, quiet landscapes, and the chance to see nature in a new light. However, it also comes with specific challenges that require preparation.

LAYERING FOR WARMTH

Winters in our area can bring fluctuating temperatures. Wear moisture-wicking base layers, insulating middle layers, and a waterproof outer layer to stay warm and dry. Don’t forget a hat and gloves to protect extremities.

TRAIL CONDITIONS

Trails can be muddy, icy, or covered in leaf litter, which may obscure hazards. Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with good traction are essential. Consider trekking poles for added stability, especially on earthen trails.

SHORTER DAYLIGHT HOURS

With early sunsets, plan your hike to ensure you have plenty of daylight to complete your journey. Carry a headlamp or flashlight as a precaution.

HYDRATION AND NUTRITION

Staying hydrated is just as important in cold weather. Pack water and high-energy snacks, as your body burns more calories in colder conditions.

WILDLIFE AND SAFETY

Be mindful of local wildlife, which may be more active during the winter. Carry a map or GPS device and tell someone your route before heading out.

INFRASTRUCTURE UPDATES

PEAKS VIEW PARK TRAIL RELOCATION AND STREAMBANK REPAIRS

Wiley-Wilson Engineering is collaborating with P&R staff to address streambank erosion near Field 10 in Peaks View Park. Hydraulic studies are complete, and environmentally-friendly methods will be used to restore the streambank and reroute a nearby paved trail. The reroute includes wetland protections and re-vegetating a 300-foot section of the old trail without affecting a parallel sewer line. Logs salvaged by horse loggers from Healing Harvest Forest Foundation will be repurposed for stream repairs, saving costs compared to traditional masonry or concrete solutions.

MILLER PARK SECURITY & LIGHTING UPGRADES

In 2021, a security assessment by the Lynchburg Police Department recommended Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) strategies for Miller Park. These include enhanced lighting, camera surveillance, and improved wifi connectivity to reduce crime and promote community safety. McGill Associates, PA is finalizing plans for these upgrades, which are scheduled for implementation in 2025.

BEAVER TRAIL REPAIRS

Over the past year, Parks and Rec staff and volunteers have relocated sections of Beaver Trail out of the floodplain, repaired a failed pedestrian crossing, and removed downed trees. Additionally, over 300 trees were planted in areas impacted by the Randolph-Savoy Sewer Project. Sections of the trail will reopen in 2025:

Early 2025: From Blackwater Trail near Overlook east to Randolph Savoy and from MM 1.5 to the Railroad Overpass.

Spring 2025: Middle section with the pedestrian crossing. Beaver Trail remains open west of Blackwater Trail to Creekside Trail near Elk Trail.

For updates, visit the “Trails” page on our website or scan the QR code.
