A LETTER FROM OUR DIRECTOR The start of a new year is a perfect time to search out new adventures, programs and activities. The City of Lynchburg offers a number of services that provide a positive impact to citizens and visitors of all ages and abilities. Our Parks and Recreation Department is vital in enriching the daily lives of citizens and households, working to promote opportunities for healthy lifestyles and build a stronger community. Each year, programs are offered in a variety of interests such as athletics, fitness, wellness, outdoor education, arts, special events, and more.

Growing up in Lynchburg, I was fortunate to be able to experience and benefit from many of the amenities, programs and activities that Parks and Recreation has to offer. As the new Director, I’m excited at the opportunity to work with our staff, and the citizens of Lynchburg, to continue these offerings and develop new and exciting ones, as well.

Our team of dedicated Parks and Recreation professionals take great pride in the programs and services we provide.

The Lynchburg Garden Club is thrilled to introduce its latest community initiative, the “Bees in the Burg” Project. This ambitious and innovative venture is set to captivate the community as they embark on a buzzworthy scavenger hunt through downtown Lynchburg.

Residents and visitors are invited to join the hunt to find nine strategically hidden, bronzed bees spread throughout downtown Lynchburg. Each bee comes with a QR code that, when scanned, unveils information about the native pollinator plants and trees nearby to engage conservationists of all ages. The first 20 participants to spot a bee and tag @lynchburggardenclub on their social media posts will be awarded a unique prize.

With the “Bees in the Burg” Project, the Lynchburg Garden Club reinforces its dedication to spreading awareness about the invaluable role of pollinators. This initiative is a stepping stone towards fostering a more eco-aware community, securing a brighter and more vibrant future for Lynchburg.

The Legacy Museum of African American History invites the public to Celebrate Black History Month by virtually tuning into the Quincy Armstrong Show! The program will air weekly, throughout the month, Sunday afternoons at 3:00pm on LTV. Episodes can also be viewed on the Lynchburg Parks & Rec YouTube channel. The show features history professor Quincy Smith, who uses theatrical entertainment to promote education through interviews with historical figures spanning from slavery to the present day.

infrastructure project updates IVY CREEK BRIDGE ON CREEKSIDE TRAIL Designs for renovation work are being planned for the old Ivy Creek Bridge, near the confluence of Ivy and Blackwater Creeks just north of the terminus of Peninsula Street. The old bridge has been reviewed and inspected by Nick Brash of Comprehensive Construction Services, who designed the new Downstream Bridge as well as the Upstream Bridge on Blackwater Creek, and Tim Beavers and his team from WRA Engineering LLP. Nick performed the initial inspection and provided an extensive report of his findings in May 2023. The existing towers, structure, and anchoring were found to be in good condition overall, and pending some geotechnical work, are expected to be found structurally sound. WRA picked up the project at the end of May 2023 and is in the process of compiling designs for the needed repairs. We will be refurbishing and performing these repairs to the old Ivy Creek Bridge in late Spring-Summer 2024.

Repairs along the damaged sections of Creekside Trail continue as we expect to open up this section from the trail entrance at Peninsula Street all the way to Elk Trail in late Spring 2024. Designs for the remaining two pedestrian crossings are underway as well, and substantial work has been done on new and relocated sections of Creekside Trail.

MILLER PARK POOL Timmons Group has continued to lead the Conceptual Design and Public Engagement process for Miller Park Swimming Pool – described as a “ReImagining” by Chuck Rapp, PLA, ASLA, AICP, who serves as Project Manager. The public engagement process produced feedback from City residents and users of the Pool via in-person and online surveys, and over 400 respondents provided their opinions. City Departments also weighed in on aspects under their purview, including maintenance, daily use, and stormwater concerns.

In October, two draft conceptual plans were presented by Timmons Group to the public and internal stakeholders. Public meetings held in person 10/25 and via Zoom 10/27 revealed additional information that was helpful in finalizing the conceptual design. Timmons provided the final concept in mid-November. Next steps include drafting cost estimates and obtaining funding for engineering and site planning work that will allow the new design to be realized.

JEFFERSON PARK In October, City Council approved the open-space easement required for stormwater management and this project has been advertised for bids, through the end of November. The next phase of construction is expected to begin in mid-winter 2024. Funded primarily through Community Development Block Grants (CDBG), improvements include a new community space on the site of the old tennis courts, with a pavilion, a relocated pedestrian pathway, seating, and signage. Additionally, the amphitheater will be refurbished, a new walking trail around the basketball courts and park area, lighting and stormwater improvements are included in this phase.

NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY With guidance from a USA Archery Certified Instructor, learn the basics of shooting, the layout of the range, safety protocol, and the rules of the range. If you like it, then come join one of our archery clubs. All equipment provided. Register by 2 days before the program.

Learn about the process of converting sap from sugar maple trees into sweet syrup, observe a tree tapping demonstration, and taste the difference between several types of syrup samples. All participants under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Pickleball is a paddle sport (similar to a racquet sport) that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players. Jessica Adams guides participants through yoga postures while being surrounded by the gentle sounds of meditational violin provided

by Daniel Kepel. After the session, unwind further with social time, savoring hot tea and light refreshments, making it a perfect evening of relaxation and connection. Register by 2/26.

A 6-week afterschool course will give students hands-on teaching and guidance from experienced skateboarders in the area to help get young skaters off their feet and on their boards in no time.
