The long-awaited replacement of the Downstream Swinging Bridge is nearing completion. Located between the terminus of Thomson Drive and Hillsdale Road, the project has encountered challenges related to weather and high water, as well as supply chain issues. The project is presently scheduled for substantial completion in August. This bridge will conjoin Creekside Trail and Beaver Trail directly, which are both unimproved walking/hiking trails. Large sections of both trails have remained closed due to the bridge construction and flood damage, as well as the Randolph Savoy Sewer project that is managed by the Dept of Water Resources. Soon a section of Beaver Trail will be reopened, as both of these critical infrastructure projects near their completion. Beaver Trail has been improved through grading associated with the Water Resources project as well as with new grass and mulch surfacing. Maintenance of Creekside Trail has continued throughout the construction of the Downstream Bridge so that when the Bridge is completed, that Trail will be re-opened all the way from Point of Honor Trail to the Upstream Bridge, located west of Thomson Drive, where it adjoins Freer Loop.
Construction has reached substantial completion on the overlook and trailhead at the terminus of Hollins Street in the Tinbridge Hill neighborhood. The project, which was funded by a $354,924.93 Community Development Block Grant, consists of an all-weather surface overlook in a natural setting, outdoor tables and seating with shade structure, native landscaping, and a new paved 6-footwide trail connection that ties into the Creekside Trail below the site. Portions of the site are planned to be ADA accessible. The contractors worked to preserve several significant trees on the site and feedback from the neighborhood has been overwhelmingly positive. A ribbon-cutting is planned for the near future.
We have contracted with Timmons Group, a visionary engineering and design firm, to lead a Conceptual Design and Public Engagement process for Miller Park Swimming Pool – described as a “Re-Imagining” by Chuck Rapp, PLA, ASLA, AICP, who serves as Project Manager. Timmons is an experienced team that has worked on parks and recreation projects for the City and other localities including Charlottesville, Roanoke, Richmond, Staunton, Fairfax, and numerous other localities, and includes landscape architects, engineers, planners, surveyors, and environmental scientists. The project kickoff meeting was held April 10, 2023, via Microsoft Teams, and included representatives of Public Works, Economic Development, and City Management, as well as Parks & Recreation staff. The public engagement process, which will produce vital information and feedback from City residents and users of the Pool, is expected to start within the next two months. City Departments will also weigh in on aspects under their purview.
