LYNCHBURG STADIUM TURF REPLACEMENT

In January, Lynchburg City Council approved maintenance funding to support total replacement of the existing synthetic turf, which was beyond its useful life. The field is used by both high school football teams, E.C. Glass soccer and men’s and women’s lacrosse, numerous athletic tournaments and community youth sports.

INFRASTRUCTURE UPDATES

MILLER PARK | PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT

We are soliciting public comment on the new improvements to the “Yard Games” area at Miller Park. The proposed site improvements include:

• New and refurbished Horseshoe Pits

• Cornhole Boards

• Lighting and fencing

• New pathway from parking lot

• Signage

An area of about 65’ x 60’ remains undesignated. Additional uses for this area could include the construction of two pickleball courts, or additional yard games such as Spikeball, Croquet, and Bocce Ball. A volleyball, soccer ball, and frisbee course could also be considered.

The public is also invited to submit comments and questions to Susannah Smith, Construction Coordinator, at susannah.smith@lynchburgva.gov or 434-455-5787.

PERRYMONT PARK | PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT

On April 25 at 6:00pm, a meeting soliciting public comment on improvements to Perrymont Park will be held in the Perrymont Elementary School Gymnasium. The park does contain some mature trees that will be preserved as much as possible. Improvements are partially funded by grants from the Virginia Outdoors Foundation and the Virginia Dept of Conservation & Recreation’s Recreational Trails Program. Attendees can review the proposed concepts, hear more about the project and its timeline, and ask questions.

The proposed site improvements for Perrymont Park:

• A 1000’ long x 8’ wide paved ADA accessible trail loop (Panther Path)

• 200’ long sidewalk connecting walking loop to wetland and picnic areas

• 500’ long x 5’ wide raked woods walk to athletic fields behind the school

• 2200’ long x 5’ wide raked nature path from Panther Path through the woods to the intersection with the cell tower road from Oakdale

• 1000’ long x 5’ wide nature path from the intersection below the cell tower down to Sandusky/Greenwood Drive

• Interpretive and informational signage, landscaping, and features

• Picnic Tables, benches, and outdoor classroom areas with greenhouse

Future improvements include a new dog park behind the ball field, sufficiently buffered from the neighborhood, and a new bus loop.

The project includes required stormwater treatment through rain gardens, bioswales, and other green/LID methods that utilize best management practices with erosion and sediment control. Existing stormwater inlets, parking areas, and mature trees will be preserved and protected during construction to the greatest extent possible.

The public is also invited to submit comments and questions to Susannah Smith, Construction Coordinator, at susannah.smith@lynchburgva.gov or 434-455-5787.

NEIGHBORHOOD CENTERS

For generations, neighborhood centers have been community hubs, where parents, students, seniors, families, and neighbors all gather. While times have changed, our purpose remains the same–to cultivate neighborhoods which support the people who live there.

In addition to running the Summer Lunch & Play program for school-aged youth, we are finding new ways to connect with neighborhood residents of all ages. Check with your local center about summer gatherings in your neighborhood. Visit our website in the Fall to see our Zumbini® schedule!

STAY ACTIVE.

STAY HEALTHY. STAY IN THE GAME.

We know you want your golden years to be full of fun, camaraderie, and health. Athletics is a great way to do that.

But, you need safe sports designed specifically for you. The problem is you’re not sure if there are any, or even where to find them, which can leave you feeling excluded and frustrated.

We believe you shouldn’t miss out on these things, and like you, we were troubled by a lack of options. THAT’S WHY WE’VE CREATED LYNCHBURG LEGENDS SOFTBALL FOR THOSE 50 YEARS AND OLDER.

From May–October, we give you the chance to relive your glory days, or create some new ones, at Peaks View Park for only $10.00 per month. Simply register online or in-person at the Miller Center.

Now you can stop sitting on the sidelines and get back in the game, all while making some new friends and having a blast.
