This team shows immense passion, love, drive and continues to invest daily in our neighborhood communities. This dedicated staff conduct programs, classes, workshops, camps and offers a number of resources that the communities want and need. We as a staff are always looking for partners, resources and ways to strengthen our communities all while continuing to focus on our center goals: work, family and education. The commitment to these key goals provides us the opportunity to strengthen each community that we serve.
Whether it’s a special event, class, program, food/produce give away, special guest speaker or just meeting new people in a fun recreation setting, the Neighborhood Center staff doesn’t mind going above and beyond for the communities they serve. Our staff’s vision of cross generation programming provides our senior and youth populations an opportunity to interact and learn from each other.
We as a staff can feel change in every moment and strive to execute so our younger generations grow to love, dream and flourish. We play every day like a championship game knowing our team is strong and unified. Celebrating the wins and owning the losses, we go to sleep at night with the confidence that not only are we better but so are the lives of the citizens we touch. To some it’s a job, but to these dedicated professionals, it’s an honor and a privilege to serve.

INFRASTRUCTURE UPDATES
HERITAGE PARK
Heritage Park lies on land that is shared between the Parks & Recreation Department and City Schools. Currently there is an open area on the northwest side of the Park that includes a general-purpose field, practice field area, parking lot, and building with storage and bathroom facilities. The remainder of the park is primarily wooded with unimproved hiking trails along a small drainage stream. The northern section of the park lies within the FEMA regulatory floodplain, which somewhat limits the types of activities that should be planned in that location. Listed below are some preliminary ideas for the future of Heritage Park.
SMALL MULTI-PURPOSE FIELD
Parks & Recreation plans for the playing field to remain, in order to add to our available field inventory for the general public, partner groups, and Lynchburg City schools. We will implement improvements to the playing surface, turf program, and drainage. We are also considering installing field lights to extend the hours it can be used.
PARK RECREATION AREA
Parks & Recreation staff desires to convert the current “practice area” south of the playing field into a recreation area. This may include but is not limited to the following improvements:
• Paved walking trail
• Shade structure(s) with picnic tables and built in grills
• Playground structures
• Exercise equipment
• Removal of some the existing fencing to open up the area to be more inviting
In the wooded area, improvements to the disc golf course are needed and should be completed as part of this project. Additional recreation activities and improvements to the overall Plan will be considered based on feedback from the public.
BUILDING FACILITIES
Parks & Recreation wishes to keep the building footprint as it exists; however the structure may be remodeled. Currently it is primarily a storage area with bathrooms. Upon evaluation and based on feedback, we may use some of the interior for classrooms and programming that would be open to the public, or for additional shop or office area.
CITIZEN ENGAGEMENT
Please look at the maps and Concept Plan and think about what you’d like to see at Heritage Park. Scan the QR Code, or use the link below, to participate in the survey to record your interests and thoughts about what improvements would work best to address the needs of the neighboring citizens and community.

For generations, neighborhood centers have been community hubs, where parents, students, seniors, families, and neighbors all gather. While times have changed, our purpose remains the same–to cultivate neighborhoods which support the people who live there.
In addition to running the Summer Lunch & Play program for school-aged youth, we are finding new ways to connect with neighborhood residents of all ages. Check with your local center about summer gatherings in your neighborhood. Visit our website in the Fall to see our Zumbini® schedule!
