Mucheleka, others case drags STEPHEN MWEWA Writes @Sunzambian TRIAL in the case opposition UPND deputy secretary general Patrick Mucheleka and four others have been charged with malicious damage to property yesterday failed to take off in the Kasama Magistrates’ Court because the trial magistrate was not available.

Mucheleka, Elias Mubanga, Samuel Ngwira, Chinyimba Bwalya and Kelvin Bwalya are jointly charged with malicious damage to property belonging to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Particulars of offence are that on September 13, 2020 the accused persons destroyed two typewriters and a kiosk that were being used by officers who were conducting mobile issuance of national registration cards in Kasama’s Chitamba Village.

When the matter came up

for trial yesterday, Mucheleka and his co-accused just appeared for mention before senior resident magistrate Chimuka Mutafera because principal resident magistrate Oswald Chibalo, who is supposed to preside over the matter, was reportedly out of the district.

The case was adjourned to January 26, 2021 for commencement of trial and cash bail of K10,000 each for all the five accused persons was extended.

Initially, Mucheleka, Mubanga, Ngwira, and Chinyimba Bwalya were also charged with aggravated robbery but the court discharged them after the State withdrew the case in October.

The State, through Northern Province National Prosecutions Authority deputy chief State advocate Richard Masempela, maintained the malicious damage charge after

substituting the initial indictment with the fresh one, which has included Kelvin Bwalya.

Meanwhile, Mr. Mucheleka has urged UPND members across Zambia to take advantage of the extended mobile voter registration exercise to register in big numbers.

He urged party members to encourage eligible voters to exercise their democratic right of voting for leaders of their choice in next year’s general elections.

And Mr. Mucheleka has thanked UPND members from Lusaka, Luapula, Copperbelt, Muchinga, and Northern provinces for their continued solidarity to him and his co-accused persons each time they appeared in court.

He said this when he addressed the members after the case was adjourned.

POLICE in Chama have arrested a 32 year old Department of National Parks and Wildlife investigations officer for allegedly defiling a 15 year old sister in law, Muchinga Province Commissioner of Police Joel Njase has confirmed.

Mr Njase identified the suspect as John Sakala 32 of Mayard Compound in Chama district who is an investigations officer at the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW).

Mr Njase said the victim explained the suspect reportedly dragged her into his bedroom and defiled the victim and promised to give her a K500 the following morning.

Mr Njase said the incident happened on Saturday between 21:00 hours and 24:00 hours in new houses compound in Chief Kambombo’s area of Chama district.

“According to the victim, she heard her brother in law opening the door.

Having seen the victim in the room sleeping, the suspect reportedly dragged her into his bedroom and defiled the victim and promised to give her a K500 the following morning,” Mr Njase said.

He said the suspect forcefully and unlawfully defiled the victim.

Mr Njase said the victim informed her mother about the illicit incident who reported the matter to the police on behalf of her daughter of the same abode.

“Acting on the report, officers from VSU interviewed the victim in connection to the crime. A medical report form was issued to the victim for possible examination,” Mr Njase said.

Mr Njase said the officers later summoned the suspect and during the course of the interviews, he expressed ignorance over the matter.

The suspect is in police custody and will appear in court soon.

Ubuntu News Clergy urged to promote unity PATRIOTIC Front Mkushi North Member of Parliament(MP) Doreen Mwape has underlined the need for unity of purpose between clergy and their congregations.

Ms Mwape said this at United Church of Zambia (UCZ) main church in Mkushi Boma, during the ceremony which announced Reverend Laston Chisenga’s official promotion to the rank of Bishop at the weekend.

She said church leaders have a role of guiding their congregation on spiritual matters and there is need to accord them support in order for the church to succeed.

Ms Mwape said there is need for members of UCZ to continue supporting the new bishop Chisenga when he takes up his elevated position at UCZ Central Presbytery in Kabwe.

The MP noted that the clergy and their members share the common aspiration of facilitating spiritual growth as well as being exemplary in moral conduct.

Northern Circuit applauded – Tourism PS THE Ministry of Tourism and Arts has commended the Northern circuit tourism package for the strides being made to promote local and foreign tourism.

Speaking on behalf of Ministry of Tourism and Arts Permanent Secretary Auxillia Bupe Ponga, Acting Director Planning Willie Kaputo said his Ministry is impressed with the way the Northern circuit has embraced its policy focus.

ZANIS reports that Ministry of Tourism and Arts Permanent Secretary made the sentiments when a delegation of Africa Business Association from the United States of America paid a courtesy call on the Luapula Provincial Administration.

“Our Ministry has a robust plan to promote domestic tourism in the Country with international and local tourism,” she says The Ministry of Tourism is trying to reposition itself from the efforts of Covid-19 pandemic in order to attract the local tourists.

Ms. Ponga says her Ministry has signed a memorandum of understanding with prosper Zambia to see how best National Parks can be assisted and also to find models that benefit the local people.

Luapula Province Deputy Permanent Secretary Royd Chakaba says tourism is a game changer which when improved is capable of transforming the Province.

CHILDREN are key stakeholders in curbing vices such as early marriages and Gender Based Violence and as such must be accorded a chance to tell their stories, says World vision Zambia.

World Vision Zambia Development Facilitator for Chongwe Cluster in the Church Community Engagement and Sponsorship Plan program, Dingase Moyo made the observation when she addressed a group of pupils during a four-day training for young journalists.

The training was held at Chimtuzi Lodge in Chongwe and participants were drawn from Mukamamabo II Girls Secondary and Margaret Mwachiyeya secondary schools in Chongwe.

She observed that children were the right people to communicate issues that directly affect them. She said that it was for this reason that World Vision Zambia was conducting train-

Reduced maternal, perinatal deaths in Kasenengwa impress MoH THE Ministry of Health is impressed with the reduced number of mothers dying in child birth in Kasenengwa District in Eastern Province.

Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary for Technical Services, Kennedy Malama has commended the Kasenengwa health office for its efforts in reducing maternal and perinatal mortalities in the district.

ZANIS reports that Dr Malama who visited Kasenengwa yesterday said the district has this year only recorded 3 deaths, which he described as an improvement from what used to happen in the past.

“It is clear that efforts are being made to reduce

maternal deaths and our teams are putting focus on reducing perinatal mortalities.

We want every Zambian to have a healthy and productive family,” the PS said when he toured Kasenengwa Zonal Health Center Mothers’ shelter.

Dr Malama is particularly impressed that after being created into a district, the health sector has performed well in the area of achieving reduced maternal deaths.

“So here in Kasenengwa, it’s gratifying that this district despite being new is making progress. We have noted that this year it has recorded three maternal deaths but this is an improvement when you look at previous years,” he said.

Kasenengwa District has been in existence for only 17 months, after being separated from Chipata City in 2019.

The PS further said the Ministry of Health seeks to provide timely maternal care to expectant mothers so as to prevent maternal and perinatal deaths.

At the time of the PS is visit at Kasenengwa Zonal health facility mothers’ shelter, an expectant mother Sarah Ziwa said she is happy with the timely maternal health care she is able to receive while staying the shelter.

“The goodness that I have found by being at the mothers’ shelter is that it is easier to be attended to, once complications occur. Most women come from far places and if they are not found at the mothers’ shelter and complications occur it’s usually not easy to reach in time and sometimes the baby or the mother or both die before getting to the nearest health center,” she said.

Another expectant mother Vita Phiri said being at the shelter helped safeguard the

wellbeing of both the mother and the unborn child.

“The benefit I have seen in being at the mothers’ shelter is that sometimes during pregnancy blood levels get low, so the medical personnel at the health facility easily help once the blood is low,” she said.

Ms Phiri further added that the shelter provided some security in case one developed complications during child birth, the medical personnel would easily make a decision that would help save both the child and mother’s lives.

The women have advised other expectant mothers to make use of such maternal health services such as mothers’ shelter for their safety and that of their unborn child.

Ministry of Health PS, Dr Malama is on six day tour of Eastern Province as part of the ministry’s routine support focusing on service delivery in the continuum of care and to appreciate some of the achievements and challenges the health system in the province is facing.

State defends compulsory acquisition of Baobab land in court

GRACE CHAILE-LESOETSA writes @SunZambian THE State and other respondents have denied allegations of fraud in obtaining the Baobab land which the MMD government compulsorily acquired from Lusaka farmer Jonathan VanBlerk.

They have argued that Mr VanBlerk has not proved the allegations of fraud against them.

The State and its co-respondents contended that re-opening the cause of action which was commenced in 1997 where Mr VanBlerk is challenging government's decision of not using the land for its intended purpose, based on allegations of fraud or misrepresentation will make the litigation endless, as the appellant is targeting a known individual who told lies before the High Court.

In this matter, Mr VanBlerk appealed to the Supreme Court challenging the Court of Appeal ruling that stated that although the reasons preferred by the trial judge were erroneous, the matter could not be re- litigated by virtue of section 14 (1) of the Compulsory Acquisition Act. Section 14(1) underscores the necessity of putting such matters to rest in public interest, once a matter has been in the High Court and an Appellent Court.

He cited the Attorney General, the Lusaka City Council (LCC), Legacy Holdings, Kwickbuild Zambia Holdings , National Pension Schemes Authority (NAPSA) and Bantu Capital Corporation as respondents respectively for acquiring a portion of farm number 4300.

He also challenged the State's acquisition of part of his land in the court of law.

The Court of Appeals dismissed his case in favour of the State.

Mr VanBlerk appealed to the Supreme Court on grounds which include that it was gross misdirection for the court to hold that compulsory acquisition of privately owned land premised on misrepresentation and fraud could not be vilified of the finality envisioned in section 14 (1) of the Land Acquisition Act of 1970.

When the matter came up for hearing before justices Mr Albert Wood, Mr Mumba Malika and Ms Jane Kabuka, Mr VanBlerk's laywer, Shadrick Mbewe prayed to the court to reverse the decision of the Court of Appeal and refer the matter to the High Court for determination and proof of the alleged fraudulent acquisition of his land.

Mr Mbewe argued that the respondents have not disputed the facts of compulsory acquisition of

the land.

But Principal state advocate in the Attorney General's chambers Francis Mwale argued that the judgement allegedly obtained by fraud can be set aside but there is need of proof as a party cannot allege fraud without proving the same.

He said the state did not concede to have fraudulently acquired the land before any court adding that the matter had already been decided upon.

"The land was intended to be used for public purpose and the state can give the land to a third party. It is not the whole piece of land that was compulsorily acquired. Selling the land was in public interest as it would benefit the public. Just because it changed hands does not mean it will not benefit the public," he argued.

He further argued that there is a

passage of time since the land was compulsorily acquired by the state and governments have changed, therefore it would be impossible for a decision made by another government to be overturned by the other government.

And LCC lawyer Lenga Muwowo argued that the council re planned the land for a commercial and residential area but there was a directive to stop the replanning due to the court action.

While Kwickbuild Zambia Holdings through its lawyers Robert Simeza and Luckson Mwamba, said that the land in question has been owned by many people who are not aware of the case as Mr VanBlerk is targeting one individual, a Mr Fortune Kachamba who was then Ministry of lands and Natural Resources registrar who told lies before the High court.

Mr Simeza said the judgements

cannot be set aside as the Baobab land has changed hands and the court can't revert to a 1997 case as there is a specific individual who the matter is targeted at when the appellant can commence a court action against the said individual.

He said the third parties cannot be subjected to the court process as they do not know how the land was acquired by the state and they cannot be held liable.

Mr Simeza said the intention of using the land was for public purpose but the said had changed after nemerous litigation and the land remains bear because of Mr VanBlerk's actions.

Mr Mwamba also argued that the decision of the Supreme court is final as section 14(1) of the lands acquisition Act is deliberate and the appellant is knocked out as the matter has already been decided upon.

Bantu Capital Corporation through its lawyer Sakwiba Sikota urged the court to uphold the decision of the Court of Appeal arguing that the issue of fraud has not been admitted as no defence filed because the matter was still at preliminary stage.

However in response Mr Mbewe said the state cannot deviate from the purpose of which the land was acquired.

He argued that State cannot compulsorily acquire land and give it to another person that's not the purpose of compulsorily acquiring the land.

He said the cause of action anchored on fraud has not been heard and section 14(1) cannot be used to bar the cause of action anchored on fraud.

Judgement in the matter has been reserved to a date to be communicated.

Speaking recently when Mr Nkhuwa inspected a 1×3 classroom block at Chigayo Primary School, Robert Musekendi said no MP has transformed Chingola constituency like Mr Nkhuwa.

Mr Musekendi said Chigayo community was overlooked and they had no pipe water and electricity.

“But with Mr Nkhuwa as our MP, power has come into our community waiting for us to connect our homes to the grid. Mulonga Water Supply and Sanitation is equally laying water pipes. Our desire is that he continues as our MP even after 2021,” he said.

In view of the on-going voter registration exercise the law maker registered at Lulamba Skills Centre but he will be voting from Twateka Primary School in Chingola East.

“I want to recontest the Chingola Constituency seat and the first qualification for me to contest is the voter registration which I have fulfilled today.”

“You may be exposed to long queues but endure, because nice things come to those who wait. We should expect the same queues during voting in 2021 but we should ensure to put leaders of our choice standing the queues and fulfill the vote,” he said And, Christmas has come early for Chingola Teachers who were in a surprise Presidential Empowerment Fund (PEF) bonanza last week.

The teachers had asked the Chingola Member of Parliament to lobby for them for the PEF so that they can start various business ventures as cooperatives.

As per guideline, the 10-Teacher Copperatives got registered and laid in wait to benefit from the hand of the President.

President Edgar Lungu dispatched Mr Nkhuwa to deliver the money on his behalf.

The President said the money should be used meticulously by the Teachers to improve their living standards.

He said most of the teachers in Zambia have taken the path of borrowing from money lending institutions and shylocks, the situation he said has affected them both at home and at work.

“This is seed money, meaning it is never too little. Let us sow it so that we can harvest hundred folds. Money is never little but ideas can be.

“Venture into your area of business and grow so that out of the over 500 of you, the beneficiaries chain trickles down to many. Money cannot be enough and others may be complaining that they haven’t benefited but you who have, must never break the chain. We can not empower everyone at once but we shall continue empowering our people in all sectors,” he said.

And in receiving the money on behalf of the 10-Teacher Copperatives, Chabanyama combined School Teacher Chamoto Sakala thanked

the head of state through Mr Nkhuwa.

In a vote of thanks Muleya Teachers Cooperative Vice Chairperson Alice Mutema assured the President that the money will be sown.

Ms Mutema said the 10 cooperatives will be involved in various business ventures according to their plan.

She said some will be involved in stationary while others will go into poultry farming.

Chingola residents have continued to place trust in their Member of Parliament, who happens to be Minister of Energy, to resolve their various development challenges.

Recently, Republican President Edgar Lungu gave Chingola marketeers, Taxi and Bus drivers K160,000 cash as an empowerment.

The President through the Chingola MP presented K80,000 cash to women in Chingola’s Riverside as start-up capital for chicken rearing and peanut butter making.

The President also presented another K80,000 evolving fund to marketeers, the National Traders and Marketeers Association

(NATMAZ), Bus and Taxi drivers at Chingola’s Town centre.

Mr Nkhuwa said the women in Chingola’s Riverside had requested for empowerment and he too approached the Head of State to help with the Presidential Empowerment Fund.

Mr Nkhuwa has called on all the parties involved to expedite the works so that mourners don’t have to go round to Lulamba to bury their loved ones.

He asked Chingola Municipal Council to ensure they provide the grader so that the works can be completed in time.

Later he toured the Amlew Ablution project in Chabanyama.

So far works have progressed well and Projects Engineer John Banda assured Mr Nkhuwa who is also Energy Minister that the works will be completed in eight weeks.

The Amlew project which will gobble about half a million kwacha will have independent water supply from a borehole and soak away sewer system to prevent clogging.

He also visited Chabanya Combined School where the Head Teacher Chambeshi Wapima briefed him of the challenges they have had in completing a 1×5 classroom block.

Mr Wapima said some classroom were accommodating over 100 pupils.

And Mr Nkhuwa promised to help them finish a 1×3 which was started under the Constituency Development Fund.

His next school was Ndungu, where the Depu-

ty Head Teacher Goodhope Ntilima expressed the challenges of the school.

Among them is lack of sufficient classroom space, security as the school doesn’t have perimeter fence, burglar doors and windows and also the need to level the football pitch with a grader. Mr Ntilima said the school had started a 1×2 classroom block but they are now stuck financially.

In response, Mr Nkhuwa opted not to be involved in the project by using his team to complete the project.

He said asked the school to provide a bill of quantity for the remainder of the project so that money can be released.

Facebook to move all UK users onto US agreements

$1.29m Kafue River Rowing Centre announced HELEN ZULU writes @SunZambian THE World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Zambia in partnership with World Rowing will soon establish the Kafue River Rowing Centre (KRRC) to boost research, fresh water conservation and contribute to sustainable water management at an initial of US$1.29 million.

The centre which will be set up on the banks of the Kafue River will serve as a regional hub where communities, scientists, conservationists and decisionmakers will come together to better understand, manage, sustainably use and enjoy the freshwater resources they depend on.

WWF Zambia country director, Nachilala Nkombo said the KRRC will contribute to educating Zambia and Southern Africa’s next generation of water experts and serve as a hub for water stakeholders to advance good water management.

Ms Nkombo said the centre will also support improved decisionmaking for local communities and water users from utility companies and heavy industry to farmers, fishers and recreational users through its programme of training, awareness-raising and problem resolution.

“The centre will also create a permanent base for the development of rowing in Zambia with outreach to Southern African countries.

“Further, local schools and universities will use the centre for an innovative curriculum of environmental education and water-based sport, building lasting connections with the river they rely on,” she said.

Ms Nkombo said there is a very obvious link between the new centre’s planned facilities for research, studies regarding water management, education, development of key decisions and new technology development related to the management of water in the rivers.

WWF Fresh Water project officer, Diilwe Syamuntu said the project delayed for about four years due to challenges relating to putting the land on title.

Mr Syamuntu however, said the land was now on title and that the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) had also given approval for the project.

“The centre will be built on 2.02 hectares land. The estimated cost for the center will vary depending on how much resources we will raise, the idea is to have a progressive development approach

while we bringing growth as we attract funds. We have a starting budget of US$1.29 million and we have received a lot of in-kind help,” he said.

And Youth Sport and Child Development Minister, Emmanuel Mulenga said the establishment of the KRRC will provide for a diversification of sports in the country.

Mr Mulenga said in a speech read for him by the acting Permanent Secretary Dr. John Phiri that the KRRC will create a permanent base for the development of sport and rowing in Zambia with outreach to Southern African countries.

He said the move by WWF and its partners was a win-win undertaking as the facility will be developed towards and beyond the focus just sport to also incorporate key aspect of rowing which demands for clean water.

“The establishment of this centre will be a huge stepping stone for the country as this will be a new era for promoting conservation amongst the community using the medium of sport,” Mr Mulenga said.

Zambian Amateur Rowing Association vice president Patrick Akayombokwa said the association would continue to support WWF in establishing the KRRC.

LONDON - Facebook will shift its UK users onto agreements with the company’s corporate headquarters in California.

The move could put UK users out of reach of Europe's privacy laws.

But Facebook said there will be no change to the privacy controls or the services it offers UK customers.

Currently, UK users are governed by agreements with Facebook’s Irish headquarters, but this legal relationship will change following the UK's exit from the European Union (EU).

The changes come into effect in 2021, and users will be notified by an update to Facebook’s terms of service in the first half of the year.

A number of other tech companies also have their European headquarters in Dublin, including Google, Microsoft, AirBnB and Twitter.

Facebook’s decision follows a similar move by Google in February.

Facebook’s UK users will remain subject to UK privacy law, which will still largely mirror the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

GDPR is among the world’s strictest privacy regimes.

Privacy advocates have expressed concern that the UK might be tempted to water down its protections in the pursuit of free trade deals as it leaves the EU. In particular, they are worried about a possible deal with the US, which has weaker privacy laws.

Already, the Cloud Act - a US law passed in 2018 - has made it easier for US and UK authorities to access data stored by digital service providers stored in each other’s territory.

President Lungu in a message has stated his concern at the rising numbers of coronavirus cases and a very visible relation by members of the public to adhere to Covid-19 public health regulations.

“A new wave of Covid-19 seems to be on the horizon and all citizens must abide by the health guidelines put in place by experts,” President Lungu shared.

“The poor adherence to prescribed public health measures has contributed to the sudden increase and geographical spread in the country in the last two weeks.

The Head of State went on to make an appeal for the members of the public to mask up.

“Let me emphasise that it is still mandatory that all citizens must wear masks, maintain social distancing, avoid shaking hands, and wash hands frequently with soap.

“I have noted with great concern a generalised spread of Covid-19 with North Western; Muchinga; Copperbelt; Central: Lusaka and Southern provinces most affected.

“The laxity towards Covid-19 guidelines by people patronising bars, musical concerts and other social gatherings.

“We must win this war against Covid-19!”

It is disheartening that despite the warnings, it appears that the most populace and financially struck areas should be in the forefront of spreading the deadly virus.

Covid-19 has taken its toll not only financially but socially and no single citizen can claim not to have been affected.

The new cases have been recorded in Kabwe, Lusaka, Chibombo, Kalumbila, Serenje, Itezhi tezhi, Liteta, Kasama, Nchelenge, Chinsali, Kaoma, and Sesheke districts.

“It is still mandatory that all citizens must wear masks, maintain social distancing, avoid shaking hands, and wash hands frequently with soap,” President Lungu stated.

“The laxity towards Covid-19 guidelines by people patronising bars, musical concerts and other social gatherings.”

The Head of State said soon Government would re-introduce restrictions on numbers of persons in gatherings, events including weddings, funerals, traditional ceremonies, music concerts and holiday festivities.

He said, “All leaders, be it traditional, religious, political, or civil are called upon to lead their followers in adhering to public health measures.”

“My Government is watching carefully the situation and evolution of Covid-19 as well as adherence to the public health measures by the public. A Worsening situation will leave us with no choice but to institute stricter public health interventions,” he said.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa just recently an-

nounced the closure of many of the country’s beaches to fight a resurgence of COVID-19 infections in the run up to Christmas.

President Ramaphosa also announced an extended night time curfew and increased restrictions on the sales of alcohol President Ramaphosa said there are concerns that new infections are increasing rapidly and may overwhelm some hospitals in affected areas.

The rise has been blamed on people’s failure to wear masks and practice social distancing, while large gatherings, especially parties, have been identified as super-spreader events.

In Zambia, the expectation is that each and every citizen will ensure they practice the Golden Rules and ensure that they mask up, avoid crowded places and practice hand hygiene.

However, the current numbers should also sound a warning.

ALEX CHOLA HUMAN COMPUTER, MASTERDRIBBLER BIRTH AND ROOTS Born on June 6, 1956 in the DR Congo, Alex Chola, in his formative years, played for Zairean side Solbena FC in Lubumbashi before he trekked to Ndola where his lived briefly.

Pascal, the young brother Alex, by his own admission, described his older brother as precocious and that he got huge inspiration from the master dribbler.

According to Pascal, himself a former Ndola United who also played for Power Dynamos like his brother, said Alex showed extraordinary footballing skills from an early age, attracting envy here, there and everywhere.

It therefore came as no surprise that the teenager, aged 18 in 1974, joined Mufulira Blackpool in what turned out to be the Launchpad of a truly illustrious career that would span14 years.

STYLE OF PLAY AND NICKNAME Owing to the way the man used to dribble past his markers with swimming ease, his left arm strapped across his heart as if it were in a sling similar to the injured Germany forward KarlHeinz Rummenigge’s sight during the 1998 World Cup tournament, Chola was indeed a player out of this world – hence the birth of the nickname Computer by the late radio commentator Dennis Liwewe.

When in his element, Chola, famed for his pyramid-like fashion of beating his markers wanting to dispossess him especially in aerial situations, he would hook the ball over their heads, this way and then that way. Alex, simply said, had the ability to beat the same player one, twice or even thrice using the same or different tricks, depending on the situation or condition, to the delight of the crowd.

On the ground, he was as slippery as an eel to catch, a master par excellence, feinting this way and then that way as if he had the property of elasticity, totally losing his pursuer in the process.

Seeing Chola in action at his brilliant best was like watching the puppet and the puppeteer at work where he, taking the role of the latter, would virtually command the ball to his wishes. A football magician of the rarest species this man was.

Whether Zambian football will ever see another Alex Chola remains to be seen.

CLUB CAREER Despite the big-time players Blackpool had at the time in 1974 – the likes of Simon “Kaodi” Kaushi, John “Fuso” Lengwe, Lee Mulenga among others, Chola with his outrageous talent and incomparable skills in evidence, he held his own at John Yumba Kachofa Stadium, Blackpool’s home.

Blackpool, a campaigner in Zambia’s old Division One, the then top-flight, finished 4th behind champions Zambia Army (renamed Green Buffaloes in 1975), runners-up Mufulira Wanderers and thirdplaced Nchanga Rangers.

By coincidence, that year (1974), the very year Chola joined Blackpool, happened to be the club’s highest scaling since the Mufulira team first joined the topflight in 1963, a

Chola was a vital cog in the Dynamos’ squad that won the Six-Nation Rothmans Invitational Trophy tournament staged in the Ivorian capital of Abidjan in May 1983.

Chola’s legacy is deeply embedded in the fact that to the present day, he remains the only Mufulira Blackpool player to have ever won the coveted Zambia Footballer-of-theYear award, the crowning glory which, as already referred to under the club career sub-title, came in 1976. For the record, the legend was aged 21. season in which they finished third from the bottom (7th) on the 9-team log then.

Before being relegated to the Second Division in 1972 after a 9-year stay in the top-flight (19631972), Blackpool’s highest finish was 7th three times in 1963, 1964

(on the 10-team log) and 1966 (on the 12-team log).

Therefore, to have bounced back in 1974, apparently Cholas’s maiden season with Blackpool with the team finishing 4th, was a giant leap for Chola & Co. Chola, to all intents and purposes, must have added a touch of magic to the team. How else would one put it, given the sudden surge to the top four of Zambia’s elite league?

Things happened to have been going well for the new kid on the block at Blackpool.

In July of that ‘glorious’ term, with the suspension of team captain John Botha, the huge responsibility of skippering the big yellow submarine called Mufulira Blackpool fell was squarely placed on the shoulders of the young Alex who had just turned 19 the previous month.

Owing to unimaginable impact the lad had made on the team in 1974, teams of all shapes and

shades from bitter rivals and town-mates Mufulira Wanderers, Zambia Army (green Buffaloes) and Rhokana United (Nkana FC) in particular, fell in mad love and courtship like thunder and lightning behaves.

Blackpool had to desperately clutch on to their most prized asset – not in the least interested to let go of their newly-mined and cut diamond at whatever cost.

Despite the team not finishing in the top six in 1975 and 1976, there was huge success elsewhere in the latter year at individual level when Chola made rare piece of history by being voted Zambia’s Footballer-of-the-Year, the first and last time a Blackpool player had ever won the prestigious individual honour in the history of the club.

Before Chola joined Blackpool in 1974, the team had previously won the 1963 Northern Rhodesia Castle. Elsewhere, Blackpool were runners-up in the 1963 InterRhodesia Castle Cup to Southern Rhodesia’s Salisbury Callies who beat them 2-0 in a final played at Luanshya’s Kafubu Stadium.

And 10 years later, they would lift the 1973 Chibuku Cup (Heroes and Unity Cup). That same year, Blackpool, in a town-mates’ Independence Cup (Mosi Cup) final staged at Ndola’s Dag Hammerskjold Stadium, beat Butondo Western Tigers 4-3 in regulation time with four different players honing in.

The quartet that sent Blackpool victorious that October afternoon were Ernest Kambole (penalty), John Lengwe, Davy Mwewa and who else, the skipper himself, Alex Chola.

Tigers’ three goals were scored by brace hero Godfrey Nkole (of the Nkole brothers’ fame) and Leonard Sichone providing the other.

The year 1978 happened to be Chola’s finest season with Blackpool in the club’s pursuit of the country’s biggest prize – the top-flight.

How painful it must have been for Chola and colleagues because they were ultimately beaten to the title by a single point (41-40) by town-mates Mufulira Wanderers.

From 30 matches played champions Wanderers won 16, drew 9, lost 5, scored 77 goals and conceded 45 to have a healthy goal difference of plus-32.

GENEVA - African badminton champion Kate Foo Kune has been handed a two-year doping ban after failing to prove her drink was spiked.

Foo Kune, who carried the Mauritian flag at the 2016 Rio Olympics, tested positive for a banned steroid at the 2019 African Badminton Championships.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) found there was no evidence to back up her claims.

The 27-year-old's ban from competition begins from 15 December.

The Badminton World Federation initially accepted that "an ill-intentioned individual" had sabotaged Foo Kune's water and

she "bore no fault or negligence".

However, the case was appealed to CAS and a panel concluded there was no evidence of foul play, with the four-time African champion handed the ban.

As the ban begins this week she will not be stripped of her 2020 African Championships title, but will miss the Tokyo Olympics. "The CAS panel found the athlete's assertion of intentional spiking during the 2019 African Badminton World Championships devoid of supporting evidence," said a statement from CAS. Foo Kune, ranked 105th in the world, previously trained at the Leeds Badminton Performance Centre. – BBC.

REMIER Futsal League (PFL) chairman Tarak Mehta has described the 2020 Futsal season as a success despite having been played with the challenges of

the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mehta said the PFL which took a break on Sunday for the Christmas holidays has witnessed a lot of developments with the introduction of the PFL Cup which features teams from the Premier League and Division one.

Mehta said after breaking for the Christmas break after today’s

fixtures, the league will resume next year with a lot of exciting fixtures lined up in both the Premier League and Division one.

“The last games for the Automotive Premier Futsal League for the year 2020 will be played this weekend after which we will break for the Chrismas Holidays and resume the league on January 8 next year,” said

Mehta.

“It has been a disappointing and successful year. Disappointing because of the pandemic but we have developed as a league and we will continue to do so with the introduction of the PFL Cup and other programmes for the junior teams.”

Meanwhile, Premier Futsal League division one leaders Zanaco

will seek to end the year on top of the 12-team table when they take on DS Academy in the last fixture of the year at Automotive Indoor Futsal Arena.

Zanaco will also seek maximum points as they fight to end the year unbeaten having won all their games and have one draw only.
