HE Zambia Aged People’s Association has appealed to the police in Muchinga province to quickly arrest the people behind the killing of elderly men and women in that province for allegedly practicing witchcraft. According to a statement made available to ZANIS in Ndola today, Zambia Aged People’s Association National Secretary, Cyprian Pombolokani said this behavior is barbaric and should be curbed immediately. He observed that families have disintegrated and have therefore left the aged vulnerable. Meanwhile, the association has strongly supported the candidature of President Edgar Lungu in the August 12 general elections. Mr. Pombolokani said President Edgar Lungu and his Patriotic Front (PF) government has recorded great success in the health and education sec-

tors. “This government has constructed many primary, secondary schools and universities as well as hospitals and health centers across the country”, said Mr. Pombolokani. The

National Secretary noted that success in agriculture is as a result of the government ensuring that farmers received inputs on time thereby recording bumper harvests. He added that infrastructure development has

Food Security Pack beneficiaries express gratitude MWINILUNGA District Community Development Officer Lunza Imwiko has expressed gratitude to the government for increasing the allocation of farming inputs under the Food Security Pack programme to the district from 300 to 1800 packs.

Ms Imwiko said the development is a huge milestone towards reaching out to more vulnerable and viable people not only in the district but the rest of the country. She said the action is encouraging, noting that this is the first time the district is receiving such an allocation in over 10 years. Ms Imwiko said this during the District Food Security Pack stakeholder’s engagement meeting, for the 2021/2022 farming input

distribution. Mrs Imwiko has however bemoaned the low acceptance and uptake of legume cultivation by beneficiaries under the Food Security Pack programme. She noted that most vulnerable beneficiaries under the programme only use cereals given to them and keep the legume seeds. “The challenge is that most of our beneficiaries have not yet embraced the cultivation of cereals like soya beans, which are more nutritious and fetch more money,” she explained. The District Development Officer called on stakeholders such as the Ministry of Agriculture to help in building interest and capacity among the beneficiaries towards cultivating legumes. She said beneficiaries should be

helped to embrace the cultivation of legumes such as soya beans, adding that these crops are not only high in nutrition value but are fetching much more money on the market. Ms Imwiko said this will help to improve household food security and provide a steady financial income which will help them come out of the vulnerability bracket. “From the field visits so far, it is promising that most of the beneficiaries will have a good yield this year,” she said. However, Ms Imwiko has expressed confidence that most beneficiaries under the FSP programme will be food secure owing to field visits and monitoring that have revealed that approximately 90 percent successfully planted their cereals.- ZANIS

The chief observed the long distances between schools in his chiefdom as a danger to girl child education. He said wide spaces existing between each school pose a danger to a girl child who has to walk long distances to reach the nearest school. The traditional leader made the appeal when the Head of State paid a courtesy call on him at Kafunkha Day Secondary School, in Katete today. “There is no boarding school in my chiefdom and the day schools in the area are widely spaced, disadvantaging the girl child due to distance,” he said. Chief Mbang’ombe also appealed for teachers’ houses in the schools around his chiefdom as most are forced to commute making it difficulty especially in the rainy season as some roads become impassable. And President Edgar Lungu assured chief Mbang’ombe that Kafunkha Day secondary will be turned into a boarding school to accommodate the girl child while plans to construct a boarding school in the area will be initiated as land is readily available. “We will work towards constructing a boarding school here at Kafunkha Day Secondary school, the head teacher has told me there is plenty of space here, so in terms of planning we will change. So we will work together to make this a boarding school, so that the girl child is not left behind in accessing quality education,” he said. - ZANIS

150 TEACHERS GET PLOTS

T

HE Basic Teacher’s Union of Zambia (BETUZ) has empowered over 150 teachers in Ndola with pieces of land to build their houses as part of a teacher empowerment program. BETUZ General Secretary Henry Sinkala said the union handed over plots to teachers as part of its quest to serve its members better. Mr. Sinkala said the union is creating a sustainable livelihood for its members across the country. He noted that the land empowerment project is in all provinces and members will have a choice to choose what will work for them. “Our land empowerment is backed by not only land but also possible developers such as Panorama group limited who are ready to develop your housing project because we want teachers to own houses before they retire,” he said. He disclosed BETUZ members will be servicing their labour and material costs while in their own houses.

“We are doing this because we know that our teachers have loans which they are servicing and they may not have space to have resources to develop the projects,” Mr Sinkala said. BETUZ has made progress in the establishment of the

Financial Services (BFS) facility. He explained that the BFS facility is aimed at providing cheaper financial loans at reduced and affordable rates which all members can afford. He further explained that the union is confident that

the financial facility will be available for its members to access within the shortest possible time. And Ministry of Higher Education Director Human Resource, Kapalo Musonda commended the union for the initiative.-ZANIS

She noted that due to the increase in beneficiaries, the programme will be rolled out to the remaining seven wards under the 2021/2022 FSP. “We will prioritise areas where there are agricultural officers, especially near where they reside so that they can assist the beneficiaries with information on the best agricultural practices,” Ms Makupa said. Ms Makupa however bemoaned the shortage of storage facilities for inputs which has been caused by the increase in the number of beneficiaries in the district. “We are still struggling with storage…it is now a bigger challenge as the number of beneficiaries has now increased,” she said- ZANIS

Ubuntu Court Haunted man threatens relative with death… Man faces difficulties in life A MAN whose life has hit a rough patch accused his relative of having allegedly murdered an unknown person and cast the spirit of the murdered person upon his life causing him to face difficulties in life and his children to fail at school. It is believed after Obey Gwetsayi saw his life take a downturn he consulted a prophet who told him that his cousin Kudzai Gwetsayi allegedly killed a person and then cast the spirit upon him causing him to face extreme difficulties in life and his children to fail at school. After that Obey confronted his cousin at his house in Njube suburb and accused him of having cast the spirit of the person he allegedly murdered upon him. Obey poured out his heart saying that the spirit caused him to lead a poor life. It also caused his children to fail at school. He also accused Kudzai of having allegedly cast the same spirit upon his mother. He also made chilling threats at Kudzai while declaring that if he failed to exorcise the spirit he would kill him. Fearing for his life Kudzai sought legal intervention at Western Commonage court. “My cousin Obey Gwetsayi troubles me. He usually comes to my house and shouts on top of his voice saying I killed a person after that I cast the spirit upon his life. And the spirit of the person I killed causes him to struggle in life and lead a very poor life. And it also causes his children to fail at school. He also accuses me of having cast the same spirit upon my mother which he claims causes her to fall sick. He swears at me while declaring that if I fail to reverse the bewitchment, he would axe me to death and he would also murder my children,” he said. Obey did not attend the court. The presiding magistrate Jeconia Prince Ncube granted Kudzai an interim peace order which compels Obey not to visit his cousin at Njube and not to verbally abuse him, and not to threaten to kill him. - BMETRO

KAMBWILI’S APPEAL TOSSED OUT

C

HISHIMBA Kambwili’s application challenging the decision of Ndola High Court judge Mary Mulanda to allow the Joseph Akafumba led NDC to commence contempt proceedings against him has been dismissed by the Court of Appeal. Mr Kambwili,Saboi Imboela, Dr Paul Mbulo and Ackson Kaonga cited National Democratic Congress (NDC) Secretary General Bridget Atanga as respondent. The four contended that Ms Justice Mulanda erred in law and fact when she allowed the Akafumba faction to commence committal proceedings against them. They also argued that the Judge erred in law and fact when she allowed Ms Atanga to commence comtempt of court proceedings against them without having paid costs in a discontinued matter against Kambwili in the Lusaka High Court. But Court of Appeal judge Catherine Makungu said the four should have sought leave of the Ndola High Court before filing the appeal which

makes it incompetent. She ruled that according to order 10 Rule 4(1) of the Court of Appeal rules, the lower court has power to grant or refuse leave to appeal even on its own motion. “Since leave was not granted or refused Kambwili and his agents should have applied for leave to appeal and obtained it before the High Court before filing the notice of appeal and memorandum of appeal. I am therefore of the view that this appeal is incompetent and I dismiss it with costs which may be taxed in default of agreement. This entails that all the orders made under the appeal are null and void for lack of jurisdiction,” she ruled. In April, the Akafumba led faction were granted an ex-parte order of interim injunction stopping Kambwili from masquerading as party president. But Kambwili disregarded the injunction and went on to hold an NDC convention where he was elected as its party president before rejoining the ruling Patriotic Front.

Trevor Noah says fist-bumping Jay Z and Beyoncé at NBA playoffs was a ‘magical moment’ “THE Daily Show” host Trevor Noah shared how he felt when he exchanged a fist-bump with the Carters at the NBA playoffs. Noah ran into Beyoncé and Jay Z at the NBA playoffs over the weekend and the two stars shared a sweet exchange. Beyoncé and Jay Z made a rare public appearance on Saturday at the Barclays Center in New York City at the NBA playoffs of the Milwaukee Bucks and the Brooklyn Nets. While walking to their court-side seats the power couple ran into Noah who was also sitting court-side. In a moment captured on camera, the “Born A Crime” author is seen fist-bumping the Grammy Award-winning “Already” singer. Taking to Instagram, Noah shared the photo and said that he was trying to figure out how to caption the post since the moment was magical and that he could only react at the time. “I’ve thought of every possible caption for this picture but really what can I write? “You’re at the @brooklynnets game, the King of Brooklyn walks in with his wife @beyonce and then they both fist-bump you. “You try to act cool but then later you see a picture of the moment and you realise that this life is insane!!! “What a privilege and magical moment to experience in life. “And even though magic happens to me every day, I hope the little South African boy inside of me never stops reminding me that I’m living a dream.” Last week, Noah scored a nomination in the Male Star of the Year category at this year’s Critics’ Choice Real TV Awards. The third annual awards announced the nominees on Wednesday and see Noah going up against RuPaul Charles, Stanley Tucci, Guy Fieri and Phil Rosenthal in the category. Noah’s “The Daily Show” also recently won an MTV Movie & TV Award and 13 Webby Awards, including Best Host or Personality and Video Remixes/Mashups.

SUN BUSINESS writes @SunZambian THE water level at the country’s biggest Hydroelectricity scheme, Kariba Dam has increased to 34.5 Billion cubic metre from 25.7 BCM last year, according to latest data from the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA). Kariba Dam houses two power stations, the Kariba North Bank operated by Zesco and the Kariba South Bank Power Station run by Zesa of Zimbambwe and account for for over 38 percent of Zambia’s power generation capacity and more 48 percent for Zimbambwe. ZRA Chief Executive Officer, Munyaradzi Munodawafa disclosed that the Lake levels have continued to rise reaching a peak of 482.83m on June 4, 2021 and maintained this level for three days before dropping to 482.82 on 7th June 2021, giving a net rise of 1.94m since 3rd March 2021.

LUSAKA

The lake is now at 7.32 un meters above the Minimum Operating Level (MOL) of 475.50m, translating to 34.53 Billion Cubic Meters (BCM) or 53.28% of live storage addding that last year on the same date, the level was lower at 25.77BCM. He said the lake is now at 7.32 meters above the Minimum Operating Level (MOL) of 475.50m, translating to 34.53 Billion Cubic Meters (BCM) or 53.28% of live storage addding that last year on the same date, the level was lower at 25.77BCM. Mr Munodawafa however, maintained that despite the increased water level, it’s expected that the lake level is expected to continue receding throughout the remainder of the 2021 dry season. He also said that Water Allocation for Power Generation at Kariba Dam will be maintained at 30 Billion Cubic Metres for both Power Stations and that any adjustments to this allocation will be communicated to the public. Mr Munodawafa said the River Authority will continue to monitor the hydrological situation of the Kariba Catchment and manage the Kariba Reservoir to ensure continued availability of water for power generation operations.

ATIONAL Pension Scheme Authority (NAPSA) has received a dividend worth K11.8 million from Marcopolo Tiles Company Limited from its shareholding of 16.4 per cent. This dividend comes within a short period of its investments, adding that it had made a very prudent business decision to invest in Marcopolo Tiles Company Limited. This is according to NAPSA Director General Yollard Kachinda. Mr Kachinda said the company had demonstrated positive growth in the recent past ending with a net profit of K150 million for 2020 resulting into this dividend. He said this demonstrates the company’s viability of its investment, stating that Marcopolo had positively contributed to job creation and growth. “We are aware that the

company has so far employed over 700 employees and has continued to bring into the country the much needed Foreign Exchange through the export of its products,” Mr Kachinda said. He noted that Marcopolo Tiles Limited was the first firm out of South Africa to manufacture and export porcelain and ceramic tiles to the region leading to the reduction of imports from other countries. “With the demonstrated growth, we are certain that the company is headed for greater performance

which will ultimately benefit our members who are the actual shareholders,” he said. Speaking earlier, Marcopolo Tiles Company Limited acting chief executive officer Roy Mwamba said the company was pleased to record positive growth last year as evident by the declaration of dividends to one of its shareholder, NAPSA. “We are here to indicate that we have taken care of your investment and the returns are evidence from what we are going to submit today. ZDA projects $5.8 bn investments THE Zambia Development Agency (ZDA) has recorded a total of US$ 5.841 billion worth of projected investments in 2020 from 326 registered investment projects compared to US$4.880 billion in 2019 from 350 registered investment projects. Announcing the development at a media briefing, ZDA Chairperson David Musonda Musopa said this represents a 19.7 percent increase in the value of projected investments. “Of the total registered investments in 2020, US$ 3.170 billion was Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and US$2.68 billion was Domestic Direct Investment (DDI), representing 54.3 percent and 45.7 percent of the total projected investment, respectively,” he said. He explained that the Agency in 2020 recorded re-investments worth US$ 1.97 billion from 26 investment projects compared to US$ 3.95 billion from 76 projects recorded in 2019. “These investors projected to expand their businesses and to create 1,626 additional jobs in 2020, compared to the 1,101 jobs that were projected to be created by re-investments in 2019,” he said. Bishop Masupa further said that ZDA has, in the last five years, recorded a positive trend in the growth of projected investments, mainly in Greenfield Projects. He said the projected surge in investments confirms the relative conducive business and investment climate created by the Government through ease of

doing business reforms, political/economic stability, peace, security, good governance, and a favorable legal regulatory environment. “Notwithstanding the negative effects of the Covid-19 Pandemic on investments such as the increase in risk aversion, uncertainty, travel restrictions and the freezing of global investment capital, the continued growth of projected investment attests to the continued interest in Zambia as a preferred destination for investment,” he added. And Bishop Masupa further said during the period under review, the Manufacturing Sector recorded the highest projected investment of US$ 2.67 billion, representing 46 percent of the total investment. He said the Energy and Transport sectors were second and third highest with projected investment of US$ 1.66 billion and US$ 0.64 billion, accounting for 29 percent and 11 percent, respectively. “A similar trend was observed in 2019 where the Manufacturing Sector was the highest with a projected investment of US$ 1.21 billion, representing 24.7 percent,

followed by Energy with US$ 1,051.35. Mining sector was third with projected investment of US$986.49,” added Bishop Masupa. “In 2020, ZDA recorded one notable high value investment in the Mining sector worth US$3,660 million, one in the Service Sector worth US$1,142 million and another one in the Energy sector worth US$848.0 million.” Bishop Masupa said the interest in the Mining sector is as a result of the recent export diversification strategy launched by the Zambian government for gold and gemstone to formalize artisanal small-scale mining and trading activities in order to generate revenue from precious metals. “On the other hand, interest in the Service Sector is a direct result of Government’s efforts in prioritizing the sector for development as well as the Agency’s efforts in promoting and facilitating targeted and strategic investments, such as the promotion of investment in local tourism and renewable energy, in line with the aspirations of the Seventh National Development Plan (7NDP) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).” - ZANIS.

the investors,” he said. Mr Mwamba noted that globally, the economies had been facing challenges arising from the impact of Covid-19 pandemic, which led to a closure of some companies. He said his firm had weathered the economic storm and was able to deliver sound profits for its shareholders. Mr Mwamba said they have been implementing a phased approached, with them currently implementing phase three. In the second week of August this year, he said the company would roll-out phase four of its sanitary ware production, making them the first in the country and region to produce such products. “We want to indicate to you our shareholders that we are ready to ensure that we put a tile on every household not only in Zambia but in the region as well,” Mr Mwamba said.

Revised import taxes to stabilise cooking oil price NAMO PHIRI writes @SunZambian REMOVAL of Value Added Tax (VAT) and suspension of import duties on edible oil will stabilise prices for cooking oil, Misozi Kadewele, the proprietor of Missoil Limited, a cooking oil production company in Mambwe, has said. Ms Kadewele commended the move by Government saying that local companies were paying a lot of money on crude oil through VAT and import duty. “Last year at the beginning of the season we were buying sunflower at K4 per kilogramme and this year we were buying at K6 and with VAT and import duty on crude oil you find the price becomes higher, so with VAT removed it means that the prices will be lower,” she said in an interview. Ms. Kadewele also expressed happiness that Government did not just ask local companies to reduce oil prices without suspending import duty. “What the government has done is a good thing because they have balanced, it would have been bad if they had just asked us to reduce the price of cooking oil without removing import duty and VAT but now we are all not affected, we are all on the safe side because both the producers and the consumers will benefit,” she said Government recently allowed the importation of 9, 000 metric tonnes of crude edible oil with a suspension of all import duties and value added tax on imported crude oil which is the main raw material in the manufacturing of local cooking oil.

COVID-19 BACK TO BASICS

The number of Covid-19 cases has since gone beyond the 100,000 mark, while at least 1,300 people have died of the disease since the pandemic broke out in Zambia in March 2020.

infected with Covid-19, you are advised to self-isolate for at least one week as you await your test results. A proportion of people who contract Covid-19 will require hospital care - the likelihood of this is very low. Recent cases have however seen young people also requiring hospital admision but typically those at a higher risk of severe or critical infections include older people and those with underlying health conditions such as hypertension or diabetes. Under the home-based care

system, asymptomatic and mildly symptomatic Covid-19 patients under 50 years without underlying conditions or co-morbidities are cared for at home by families with the support of communitybased volunteers. But patients with moderate or severe symptoms are admitted to a health facility. We cannot afford to ignore Covid-19 and any one of us can be infected and affected. Let us continue to abide to the public helth guidelines and stop the spread of coronavirus.

HE country yesterday saw the highest daily number of persons admitted to health facilities to be treated for Covid-19. In the daily briefing, the Ministry of Health made tge alarming disclosure that 144 peope had been admitted in a single day. This news comes a day after it was announced that 2,146 new Covid-19 cases had been detected in a 24-hour period. It is disturbing to note that despite the warnings that the third wave may see higher numbers of transmission and severity of cases, members of the public are still relaxed. It appears as if laxity has set in. Zambia is now experiencing the third wave of Covid-19, which is said to be presenting sophisticated symptoms and is more severe. The number of Covid-19 cases has since gone beyond the 100,000 mark, while at least 1,300 people have died of the disease since the pandemic broke out in Zambia in March 2020. The majority of people who are infected with coronavirus experience a mild or asymptomatic disease which can be treated at home. There is currently no cure for Covid-19 and so the main aim of treatment is to manage and reduce symptoms until you have recovered. Most people - around 80% - have an asymptomatic or mild infection which can be treated at home. If you suspect you have been exposed to a person

By Daniel Kaoma FULL NAME: Moses Chikwalakwala DATE OF BIRTH: 23 August, 1974 PLACE OF BIRTH: Mufulira, Zambia PLACE OF DEATH: Libreville, Gabon PLACE OF BURIAL: National Heroes’ Acre, north of Independence Stadium, Lusaka PLAYING POSITION: Right-winger CLUB: Nkana FC, Kitwe, Zambia FORMER CLUB: Chambishi FC, Zambia

Continued from Saturday INTERNATIONAL CAREER It is a rarity in Zambian football for a player to be playing for the senior national team when his club is plying its trade in the lower tier . Yet Chikwalakwala was already an established player in 1992, be it as it may that his team Chambishi FC, was a member of the First Division (Northern region). What is even praiseworthy for this pocket of magic of a right winger was the fact that despite the Chitalu-coached squad being a star-studded squad, Chikwalakwala quickly established himself as if he had been part and parcel of the team for decades. Another noteworthy point about the young winger was that the moment he became a part of the already crème de la crème squad, unlike other players who become understudies to their seniors, in his case, he did not made an instant coup de grace of a kind by edging out the equally-deserving (Timothy) Mwitwa who, more often than not, would play second fiddle to Moses. During the joint 1994 Tunisia African Cup of Nations (AfCON)/USA World Cup finals qualifiers, Chikwalakwala was an almost ever-present feature in the team. Suffice it to say that Chikwalakwala was in Zambia’s last match she played before the horrific Gabon Air Disaster occurred. When Zambia thrashed Islanders Mauritius 3-0 away on April 25, 1993 in Curippipe in the 1994 Tunisia AfCON finals

others. Elsewhere, Chikwalakwala also played for the senior Zambia team at the 1992 regional CECAFA (Confederation of East and Central African Football Association) tournament held in Tanzania when Zambia won bronze. Most memorably, Chikwalakwala scored in

his team’s 3-2 group stage match defeat of Ethiopia by opening the scoring in the 7th minute before defender Samuel Chomba added a second four minutes later after the interval from the penalty spot. Banda slotted in the winner on 63 minutes. Chikwalakwala, the enterprising winger, also

featured for Zambia in both the 1-0 defeat of his team by Malawi as well as the 8-0 capitulation of Zanzibar and the narrow 2-1 win over hosts Tanzania. Had Zambia qualified for the 1994 Tunisia AfCON finals with the perished team, Chikwalakwala would have made his maiden appearance alongside six others in the names of kelvin Mutale, Kenani Simambe, Winter Mumba, Godfrey Kangwa Mwila Numba and (Patrick) Banda . LEGACY For a player who had not yet become 19 to have commanded a regular place in the Godfrey Chitalu-coached team was in itself an achievement worth a huge pat on the back of the young winger. STYLE OF PLAY A merchant of real pace, this winger was a real menace to defenders when in full flight down the right wing, turning them inside out with regular impunity. Once Chikwalakwala got past a defender or indeed his marker, his pace was like a whirlwind – leaving him for dead in his wake. By and large, it was owing to the winger’s direct play allied to his admirable crossing service that made him an automatic choice in the Godfrey ChitaluAlex Chola tandem tutored side.

NBA play-offs: Phoenix Suns’ Chris Paul stars in 123-98 victory over Denver Nuggets POINT guard Chris Paul scored 17 points and set an NBA play-off record as he helped the Phoenix Suns to a 123-98 victory over the Denver Nuggets. Paul, 36, became the first player to rack up three playoff games with 15 assists and no turnovers. An emphatic win gave the Suns a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven Western Conference semi-finals series. It was the Nuggets’ heaviest defeat of the season,

with head coach Michael Malone calling it “embarrassing”. Devin Booker scored a team-best 18 points for the Suns, who have now won five consecutive post-season games. Every Suns starter scored double figures, and Paul said: “It was a team effort, once again.” Denver’s Nikola Jokic, who was announced on Wednesday as the NBA’s Most Valuable Player, was the visitors’ most influential player with

24 points, 13 rebounds and six assists - more than his side’s other starters combined - despite sitting out the entire fourth quarter. “This was just an embarrassing performance all the way around, from top to bottom,” said head coach Malone. “I saw one team that wanted to be here, played with purpose and urgency, and one team that did not want to be here and played with no urgency.” Game three will be played in Denver on Friday.

Elsewhere, the NBA announced that Utah Jazz’s Rudy Gobert is the 2020-21 Defensive Player of the Year. It is the third time the 7ft 1in Frenchman has won the award, this time earning 84 of 100 first-place votes. “When I started basketball as I kid, if somebody would have told me that I was going to be defensive player of the year [once], let alone three times, I would have never believed them,” he said after picking up his award. - BBC
