BOZ SEEK TO REIGN IN INFLATION In February 2021, BoZ signalled its intentions to progressively tighten the monetary policy stance to bring inflation back to its six to eight percent target range over the medium-term. Central banks in several African nations are likely to overlook quickening inflation and keep interest rates on hold at least until the third quarter of next year as higher money-market yields suggest price-growth expectations remain anchored, according to the head of Africa research at the continent’s biggest bank.

BUUMBA CHIMBULU writes @SunZambian THE benchmark of lending money for the first half of this year is focussing on containing escalating inflationary pressures and anchoring its expectations, the Bank of Zambia (BoZ) has said. In February 2021, BoZ signalled its intentions to progressively tighten the monetary policy stance to bring inflation back to its six to eight percent target range over the medium-term. Central banks in several African nations are likely to overlook quickening inflation and keep interest rates on hold at least until the third quarter of next year as higher money-market yields suggest price-growth expectations remain anchored, according to the head of Africa research at the continent’s biggest bank. “Monetary policy is tighter than implicitly suggested by conventional rates across the African continent,” Standard Bank Group’s Jibran Qureishi said in an interview. Yields at the short end of the curve in Nigeria and Tanzania have risen, even though monetary policy has been dovish in both countries, analysts led by Qureishi said in Standard Bank’s latest African Markets Revealed report that focuses on 18 countries. That means central banks on the continent, except for Zambia, where

Governor Christopher Mvunga has warned interest rates could go up further if inflation doesn’t come down, are likely to favour a neutral stance with an accommodative bias, and could even allow price growth to rise beyond target, according to the report. Most African central banks have kept policy unchanged this year on concerns about economic growth. In addition to Zambia, Mozambique and Zimbabwe have tightened, while Ghana and the Democratic Republic of Congo cut rates. Zambia’s annual inflation currently stands at 23.2 percent while the monetary policy rate is at 8.5 percent. Over the first half of this year, monetary policy is focusing on containing escalating inflationary pressures and anchoring inflation expectations, says BoZ Deputy Governor-Operations, Francis Chipimo. Dr Chipimo stressed that ensuring that inflation remained well anchored in the medium-term was essential to moderate fragilities in the financial sector and support economic recovery. He indicated that the shift in the monetary policy stance followed almost a one-year period

... as media engaged to raise monetary policy knowledge

The Bank of Zambia

of monetary easing to support financial system stability and economic growth in the wake of the Covid–19 pandemic. “This stance balances the need to rein in inflation against the efforts made to support financial system stability and economic growth,” Dr Chipimo said yesterday in Kabwe at the 16th media seminar under the theme Understanding the Monetary Policy Statement. The BoZ, he said expected that going forward inflationary pressures would begin to subside on account of excess supply of maize in view of a good crop harvest. On the National Financial Switch, Dr Chipimo also said a total of 15 participants were live on the Mobile Payments module as at end oof first quarter of 2021. The Switch, which went live on the 23rd September 2018 on a trial basis, is the first ever local nationwide shared platform, which will facilitate for exchange of information on digital payments throughout the Country. “This module provides great opportunities for everyone as it provides diverse use cases and

enables customers to conduct instant payments across networks and service providers without handling cash. “This is particularly important, given that the pandemic period has continued to ravage economies across the globe,” he said. Meanwhile, Dr Chipimo disclosed that a media seminar would mainly cover monetary policy and would also involve discussions related to Targeted Medium-Term Refinancing Facility and developments in the payment systems. The Bank, he said, had taken a deliberate decision to focus its media training initiatives on specific topics to allow for a more detailed discussion and deeper understanding of the topics covered. “The Bank recognises the importance of effective communication in carrying out its mandate of achieving and maintaining price and financial system stability in order to foster sustainable economic development. “This seminar is, therefore, being held within the broader scope of enhancing your understanding of developments in the economy and to help you, and through you, the general public, to correctly analyse and disseminate information,” Dr Chipimo said.

Ubuntu Opinion Yestterday, the Ministry of Health expressed worry at the daily increase of confirmed Covid-19 cases being recorded countrywide resulting in overburdening isolation and treatment facilities. IT appears as if the general public is now immune to the Covid-19 threat despite the worryingly high numbers of cases and deaths. Ues, the third wave is here and yes it was predicted that Covid-19 cases would increase in the winter, but the current situation is disappointing and points to a general negligence amongsy the public. Yestterday, the Ministry of Health expressed worry at the daily increase of confirmed Covid-19 cases being recorded countrywide resulting in overburdening isolation and treatment facilities. Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary, Kennedy Malama called on the community to adhere to the Covid-19 measures to stop the further spread of the virus adding that complicity and laxity are the biggest enemy at community level. “The Public Health Act clearly stipulates that in a pandemic situation such as this, no public gatherings should be held without due certification by the local authorities. This

Dr Malama

applies to weddings, parties, funerals and other such gatherings. The public is therefore urged to adhere to this guidance,” he said. “We are leaning on the comparative advantage of leaders of congregate settings

including markets, bus stops and bus stations, schools, and churches.” The Coronavirus is spread by human interaction and w know this. The only way to stop transmission is to en-

sure you are protected and protect ohers by limiting movements, ensuring you practice social distance, wearing of a mask while in public and washing of hands or using hand sanitiser regularly. The current daily Covid-19 reports indicate that not enough people are following these basic rules. Dr Malama revealed that 2,065 confirmed cases and 16 deaths were recorded in the last 24 hours, bringing the cumulative number of confirmed cases recorded to date to 107,974 and 1,348 cumulative number of Covid-19 related deaths recorded. The ministry’s projections of increased Covid-19 cases have come to pass barely three weeks into the third wave, which is proving to be more virulent compared to the previous two waves. Dr Malama noted that if the situation continues at this rate unchecked bed spaces will be filled up swiftly. “With a high case load, our health care workers are getting stretched and like in any other setting this tends to affect the quality of care. As such, it is critical that we address the root cause of the problem. If we do not close the taps of community transmission, the situation will continue to escalate,” the Permanent Secretary explained. He also mentioned that the Ministry is aware and shares the concerns from parents and educators with regard to some school going pupils testing positive for the virus. In a statement, Dr Malama called on parents and educators to consider the seven months of schooling that were lost last year which have not yet been recovered. “Take into consideration that our children lost over 7 months of schooling last year, the time that they are yet to recover and we are closely monitoring the situation to inform decision making. Of course life is always supreme and we will make decisions based on evidence available,” he added. There are a number of schools that have opted to send entire classes home when a case of Covid-19 is recorded, whil others have resumed full day timetables to catch up in lost time. The truth remains that Covid-19 is with us and we must learn to live with it. We have been rquipped with infomation and actual materials to help stop the spread of Covid-19, le us use them. We must bring down the number of Covid-19 infections and with it reduce unnecessary deaths.

The Moses Masuwa fact-file A STRIKER WITH AN EYE FOR GOAL

By Daniel Kaoma FULL NAME: Moses Masuwa DATE OF BIRTH: 30 July, 1971 PLACE OF BIRTH: Kitwe, Zambia PLACE OF DEATH: Libreville, Gabon PLACE OF BURIAL: National Heroes’ Acre, north of Independence Stadium, Lusaka PLAYING POSITION: Striker CLUB: Roan United FC, Zambia FORMER CLUBS: Nitrogen Stars, Green Buffaloes, Kabwe Warriors FC

BIRTH AND ROOTS Like Wisdom Chansa, Winter Mumba and Kenani Simambe, Moses Masuwa was also born in Kitwe, home to Zambia’s winningest team in the topflight, Nkana FC and also base to Power Dynamos, arch-rivals to the Wusakili-based team. STYLE OF PLAY Masuwa was an old-fashioned striker who loved racing with the ball with an eye for goal who believed in facing defenders before going for glory. He, like Chitalu, was known for thunderous shooting at goal. Club career He played for three clubs domestically. Originally from Army side Green Buffaloes, he would also briefly play for Kafue’s Nitrogen Stars before finding permanency, so to speak, at Railway Ground, the team where his CV was developed and enhanced brightly, winning a couple of honours, among them, the 1991 BP Challenge Cup and a Premier league title in 1987. Among the men he rubbed shoulders with at Warriors were Timothy Mwitwa, Ricard Mwanza, Whiteson Changwe and Paul Masumba from a long list. At the time of the plane crash that also killed 18 of his teammates and two coaches, Godfrey Chitalu and Alex Chola in addition to 10 other passengers aboard the military Buffalo plane, Masuwa was plying for Roan United, a team that has produced most of Zambia’s star players such as Ginger Pensulo, Willie “Which-

way” Chifita, Boniface Simutowe, Godfrey Mpula, Bernard “Bomber” Chanda, Kaiser Kalambo, Martin Besa, Joseph Mapulanga, Jim Mwale, Zambani Sailota, Derrick Mwansa and Vincent Chileshe, the first goalkeeper to win the prestigious Zambia Footballer-ofthe-Year award in 1977, beating arguably the greatest player of all time, Godfrey Chitalu to the race. INTERNATIONAL CAREER Masuwa was one of the four strikers in the team that perished off the Gabonese capital of Libreville alongside Wisdom Chansa, Kenani Simambe and Kelvin Mutale. Though in and out of the Chitalu-Alex Chola tutored side, on his day, Masuwa was a forward to bank on. God knows how far the stocky striker would have gone with Zambia in pursuing his career at the highest level.

The Chipolopolo were a very promising Zambia national team. At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul they thrashed Italy 4–0. They had their eyes on the 1993 Africa Cup of Nations trophy and a place at their first World Cup.

MICHO’S LAST EXPERIMENT ... Chipolopolo meet Sudan again From page 12 The rebound fell in the path of Mohammed Abdelharin who was first to react and he made no mistake from close range. Zambia were then caught on a counter attack from a corner. Despite managing to get men behind the ball, the Zambia defense was split open with some incisive passes that ended with Athar Altahir cracking an unstoppable shot from the top of the box that beat Chibwe in the 17th minute. Zambia pulled one back two minutes later when Mwila reacted sharply to a ball played to him in the box to finish with his first touch on the half-turn inside the box. Unfortunately, the Chipolopolo could not hold tight at the back and they again conceded in the 22nd minute when Mohamed Abdallah ran into a the space left by Prosper Chiluya on the left. He spotted Chibwe off his line creatively lobbed a shot over him for Sudan’s third. Micho made four changes at the break. Benedict Chepeshi, Salulani Phiri, Paul Katema and Gregory Sanjase came in for Makabaniso Magenge, Amity Shamende,

Golden Mafwenta and Mwenya Chibwe. There was little in display from the Zambia team and they hardly trouble Ali Abdallah Abseshren in the Sudanese goal. There was however still one more shout for Mwila as the Buildcon man pounced on a loose back pass to go round the goalkeeper to slot home Zambia’s second. Today's match hopes to see better results. - ZAMFOOT ZAMBIA STARTING XI 1. Mwenya Chibwe (Gregory Sianjase 46′), 23. Prosper Chiluya, 15. Dominic Chanda, 19. Isaac Shamujompa, 5. If you were to go over Murray’s recent past, you might conclude that someone, somewhere (Novak Djokovic perhaps?) has an Andy Murray doll and has been sticking pins in it – especially in his right hip, which has been his downfall. His pain has been so extreme that two years ago, at the Australian Open, he seemed done. At a pre-tournament press conference, asked, “How have you been feeling?” he broke down. “Not great,” he said, and couldn’t say any more. He had to leave the room, in tears. When he returned, he said he hoped to be able to continue to play until Wimbledon, then stop: “But also, I’m not sure I’m able to do that.” And he got upset

again, fiddling with the rim of his cap as he tried to contain his emotions. It was absolutely gutting to watch. At only 31, he was being forced to end a brilliant career in the sport he’d loved all his life, and he was devastated. But then, a miracle! Less than three weeks later, he had major hip resurfacing surgery and decided to carry on playing; to fight his way back. It’s not been easy. He’s won some matches, flunked others. He’s caught Covid, picked up other injuries, seen his world ranking drop from top four to the 120 mark. All this when he’s already achieved so much. His successes are on record for ever. You can’t help thinking: why even try to make it to Wimbledon? Why put himself, and his battered body, under such pressure? -The guardian

SUN SPORTS writes @SunZambian MEDIA trainer Meck Phiri is participating in a 21 kilometre Comrades Marathon to raise awareness on heart disease and diabetes He is expected to complete a route from the Shimabala Toll plaza to Chita Lodge Kafue. He is raising awareness under the theme #astrongerheartispossible. Morre than 10,000 athletes have registered for this year’s virtual Comrades Marathon. This will be the second virtual race after last year’s Comrades Legend race. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, people ran remotely and shared their experiences online. This year people can enter to run distances of 5 kilometres, 10 kilometres, a half-marathon, 45 kilometres and the full Comrades distance of 90 kilometres. Comrades Marathon Association Vice-Chairperson, Mqondisi Ngcobo, says entries are still open until race day for the centenary anniversary of the event. “At this point, we have about 10,720 entrants all over the world and we’re still expecting more entries as we are going to be taking entries until the day of the race which is Sunday, the 13th of June 2021. Because they are expected to run from their locations or location of their choice from midnight on the 13th of June until just before midnight on the 14th of June which is Monday, they can run the whole day and they can choose the distance of their choice.” The Comrades Marathon is also celebrating its 100th year.

... Chipolopolo meet Sudan again AARON MUBANGA writes @SunZambian THE Zambia National team mke their last effort to impress when they meet Sudan yet again in an international friendly after a dismal run. Two days ago the team posted another poor result on their current international friendly match tour when they were beaten 3 – 2 by Sudan. The Chipolopolo just never got going

despite coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojević freshen the team up by making seven changes to the team that started against Benin. In defense, Makabaniso Magenge was given his international debut while Isaac Shamujopa made his first start for Zambia on the tour. Benson Sakala returned to the starting XI together with Collins Sikombe and Golden Mafwenta. Brian Mwila was also given a start and there was also a place for Amity Shamenda in the starting XI.

Mwila made the most of his first start for Zambia since March 2018 to bag a brace that proved to be a face saver for an otherwise poor display by Micho’s squad. Sudan started brightly and were ahead in the third minute when Zambia failed to defend a set piece. A cross from the right side was met by an unmarked defender but Mwenya Chibwe did well to keep out the initial effort. (To page 11)

The high powered African delagation meeting was graced by African Minifootball Confederation president Ben Achref Salha who doubles as World Minifootball Vice President.

Is he or isn’t he? One minute Andy Murray, one of Britain’s greatest living athletes, tells me he’ll be back on the court at Wimbledon this month, playing well in the tournament that made his name. And the next, he doesn’t sound so sure. “The test is being on court with the best players,” he says in a break in training, “and that’s something that, right this second, is difficult to give a definitive answer to.” The joy of sport is its unpredictability, but Murray’s not talking about that. His body has been through such immense stress and strain – throughout his career, but especially over the past few years – that he can’t rely on it. He genuinely doesn’t know what it can do. Still, he’s optimistic. “Yes, I feel good!” he says, and he looks great: bright-eyed, clear-skinned, steady demeanour. His top is Scottish dark blue. “I want to be fit and able to play, and I think I will be. My team and the physios and doctors feel as if I will be. I’m excited to play at Wimbledon again, in front of crowds. I’ve missed that.” And yet… “Over the last few years, whenever I’ve been asked, ‘How do you feel?’, I’m like, ‘Yes, I feel good!’ And then something happens.”
