Communities in Mambwe District urged to conserve nature COMMUNITIES in Mambwe District of the Eastern province have been urged to conserve natural resources in order to reap long term benefits. Safari Guide Coordinator for Community Game Drives Chris Mwale said communities need to learn to appreciate nature and start conserving its diverse resources. Mr Mwale, who has been organising the game drives sponsored by Lion Recovery Fund and Dazzle Africa, disclosed that communities from various chiefdoms have been engaged to go on the game drives so that they can have a feel of nature, appreciate it and conserve it. He noted that the rationale is that those experiencing the drives can in turn start sensitising others who may not have the opportunity to go on these paid for game drives. Mr Mwale explained that protecting natural resources will also improve the ecosystem, on which the tourism industry largely depends. He revealed that since the inception of the programme in July 2020, community mem-

bers selected by Chiefs drawn from Jumbe, Nsefu, Mnkhanya and Kakmbi Chiefdoms have had the opportunity to go on the game drives so as to appreciate the beautiful wonders of creation. Meanwhile, Croc Valley Safari tour guide Simon Phiri urged the delegates on the tour guide to preciously protect and conserve natural resources so that future generations can also benefit. Mr Phiri noted that the various safaris that are in the forefront to ensure that natural resources are protected and conserved know their importance and how they add to the beauty of the earth. He pointed out that local communities have also benefited from local tourism. “Please let us learn to protect, conserve and embrace natural resources so that our various communities can continue benefiting. Look at how these Safaris are taking care of our communities," he said. ZANIS

OVERNMENT has paid more than seventy Social Cash Transfer Beneficiaries in Nabwalya Chiefdom in Mpika District of Muchinga Province. Mpika District Commissioner Sampa Muswema who flagged off the payments assured beneficiaries of government’s commitment to alleviate poverty among vulnerable groups of society. Mr Muswema noted that

government managed to pay beneficiaries in Nabwalya chiefdom despite the area being located in the hard to reach. “The Social Cash Transfer programme is for all Zambians who are eligible and the people of Nabwalya are not an exception,” said Mr. Muswema.

The District Commissioner further outlined the beneficiaries as the aged, people living with disability, child headed households among others, all from Kazembe and Kapangula areas in Nabwalya. “I would like to urge you to be praying for the President for the continued im-

He said beneficiaries have been able to build houses, pay school fees for their children and are able to afford at least three meals a day Meanwhile, one of the beneficiaries, Josephine Nkope, praised President Lungu for the programme which has managed to change her living standards. Ms. Nkope said that the funds have enabled her build a house and buy food for her children and grandchildren. “There has never been a president in Zambia who has been able to implement a program such as this, President Lungu should be commended,” said Ms. Nkope.- ZANIS

And Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA), Manager Consumer Protection and Compliance Edgar Mlauzi wants to make sure that many people know that there is a safe route to call out illegal content if they see it online. The awareness campaigns we have launched today on the fight against child online protection demonstrate our

commitment towards the well-being and safety of our children,” he said. Mr Mlauzi was speaking during the stakeholder engagement meeting on Child Online Protection in Chadiza District. He added that while the internet avails children the opportunity to discover new and engaging sources of knowledge, it is paramount that the children are safeguarded from internet users looking to exploit them. “The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) portal has been critical in that it has provided a platform for Zambians to report images and videos of child sexual abuse when

they spot them on the internet for take down,” he said. Mr. Mlauzi urged citizens to report all online child sexual abuse cases to the portal for action or to call the Toll- Free numbers 116 or 7070 for lifeline-childline and ZICTA respectively for information. Meanwhile, Chadiza District Commissioner George Phiri who officiated at the meeting indicated that the availability and penetration of e-platforms to a great extent has continued to affect social attitudes and community values between individuals. This is in a matter in which Shy Mudenda of Choma is appearing before Court charged with Rape contrary to the laws of Zambia. Allegations are that Mudenda on April 27, 2021 in Choma allegedly had carnal knowledge of a 19 years old woman

without her consent. When the matter came up for continued trial before Court, Resident Magistrate Ethel Phiri found the accused person with a case to answer after being satisfied that the state had proved a prima facie case against him. This was after her aunt who is also Mudenda’s aunt testified that on that fateful day whilst she was harvesting her crops the victim who looked so low approached her and explained that Mudenda forced himself on her the previous night. She testified that the victim told her that Mudenda raped her three times in the same night and beat her up for trying to resist his advances. She went on to say, her niece lamented that Mudenda inserted his fingers into her private parts without her consent. The matter comes up on Monday, June 14 for defense. The alleged incident is said to have happened between May 1 and 12 in Choma district of Southern province. When the matter came up for continued defense before Senior Resident Magistrate Peter Mungala, Litonga testified that, after finding Hanchele having sex with

a pupil of the same school around 20: 00hrs on March 23, Hanchele promised to give him money so he could not reveal the sexual escapade he had with a pupil. Litonga went on to testify that, despite him knowing that the mattress, book rack and tables he was given to re-

MULENGA MUSONDA writes @SunZambian

THE Choma Magistrates Court has committed a 38 years old Farmer to the High Court to exculpate himself from allegations of attempting to kill someone. In this matter, Frank Chikopa of Choma is facing one count of Attempted Murder contrary to the laws of Zambia. Allegations are that Chikopa on November 25, 2019 in Choma jointly and whilst acting with others unknown attempted to unlawfully cause the death of

When the matter came up for mention before Resident Magistrate Selia Kanunka, the State through Public Prosecutor Gerald Tembo presented a certificate of committal on behalf of the Director of Public Prosecution for Chikopa to appear in the High Court. Magistrate Kanunka after after going through the committal certificate committed the accused person in accordance with the Law. Chikopa was remanded in custody and will appear in the High Court at its next sitting.

Two men who were on the blink of doing time in Prison for Burglary and Theft of properties valued at nearly K60, 000 have walked to freedom after the Choma Magistrates Court found them not guilty. In this matter Gift Nawa and Mancray Kampali were appearing before Court charged with Burglary and Theft contrary to the Laws of Zambia. Particulars of the offence are that the two on February 21 in Choma, jointly broke into the house of Sichikali Handuba and stole among other valuables, electronic and electrical appliances, assorted clothes and groceries all valued at K58, 204. After the state called four witnesses to testify against the duo, the prosecution failed to prove a

prima facie case of Burglary and Theft against the two which saw the Court dropping the charge to “being in possession of property suspected to have been stolen.” And when the case came up for judgment before court, Resident Magistrate Ethel Phiri still found the state’s evidence unconvincing to warrant a conviction. She said there were chances that the properties stolen could have exchanged hands looking at the period that had elapsed. She further established in her findings that, had the two known that the items they were selling were stolen; they would not have displayed them in public to offer to sell. She thus acquitted the two men and set them at liberty forthwith.

MWAKALOMBE VIES FOR CHONGWE SEAT ... former MP seeks re-election to continue development works JOHN KOMBE writes @SunZambian

HEERED by the decision of the Patriotic Front to adopt him as the candidate for the Chongwe Parliamentary seat , Japhen Mwakalombe has been active on the ground rallying support. The former Chongwe Member Parliament saw him actively deliver on development promises made when he took up the seat in 2016 and he has pledged to continue with the good works. “I was humbled to receive the news of my adoption as candidate for the Chongwe parliamentary seat on the Patriotic Front ticket. This is not by power or might by the sovereign hand of God,” he shared. “Let me seize this opportunity to thank the people of Chongwe for allowing me to serve them as member of parliament from 2016 to date. I also say thank you to her royal highness, Senior Chieftainess Nkhomeshya Mukamambo II and all the traditional leaders for their support. “I would be failing if I do not thank Chongwe mayor, Mr. Geoffrey Chumbwe for his wise counsel and encouragement during my tenure. “Indeed, the journey has not been easy, but the support from H.E. Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu has helped us to spur development in Chongwe. I say thank you to the PF government for the many developments in Chongwe. This is unprecedented and I pledge to continue lobbying for our district. “I particularly want to thank the PF leadership for considering me to recontest the seat in the forthcoming elections. This is not anyone’s making, but God himself. May He continue guiding our party and President even as we seek to roll out devel-

opment to all parts of the country.” As part of his philanthropic works, the former MP on several occasions facemasks and empowerment funds to the marketeers in a bid to mediate challenges raised by Covid-19. Last year, Mwakalombe donated 10%

of his salary to the constituency, making the announcement when he visited Chongwe Central ward main market. He handed over the donations to the National Traders and Marketeers Association of Zambia (NATMAZ) Chongwe branch committee for distribution. At that time the lawmaker said he

The former Copperbelt Minister is confident that the good works under-

taken under the leadership of President Lungu will see the Patriotic Front emerge victorious in the August 2021 General Elections. “Unless you are just bad hearted not to appreciate and see the kind of development Chongwe has seen under the leadership of President Lungu,”

Mwakalombe has observed. He points out that Chongwe has seen massive road infrastructure and that the perpetual water challenges every September is now a thing of the past following the drilling of 8 industrial boreholes with an additional 27 kilometers connection of piped water to the district, all courtesy of the hard working head of state. He adds that he sees no reason why Chongwe will not give 100 percent vote to the Patriotic Front and President Lungu. “No matter how much they scandalise us and call us all sorts of names, we will not be distracted to work hard to empower and bring development to our people” he said. Recently, over 100 United Party For National Development (UPND) members in Kanakantapa ward of Chongwe constituency have defected to the ruling Patriotic Front. Mwakalombe who received the defectors after watching a soccer tournament for youths in the area commended them for join-

ing PF adding that the party is ready to work with everyone who is willing to foster development in the country. He said a lot of people in Chongwe are joining PF as they appreciate the development which is taking place in the area. He cited the construction of 55 kilometres of roads and a Police station in Kanakantapa as one of the milestones undertaken by the government to uplift the lives of people in the farming area. The aspiring lawmaker also urged old PF members to embrace new members and work with them at all levels of the party. He further called on young people in the ward to use their skills in sport as a means of earning a living. Mwakalombe has made the assurance to continue with his empowerment programmes which has seen the lives of women and the youth improved and thanked President Lungu for making Chongwe one of the highest beneficiary of various empowerment initiatives.

Mr Ndayizeye noted that Zambia imported maize, cement and steel products to Burundi. He said, in Lusaka at

a press briefing, that it was for this reason that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) needed to be signed by the two countries. Mr Ndayizeye explained that the MoU would enable the private sector from both countries to lobby for development. “We need to strengthen those relations because when we talk about development, the engine is private sector. Without trade we cannot even strengthen the good relations existing between the two countries. We need to formalise these relations so that we can lobby together for development of the private sector for with countries. We have signed MoUs with Kenya and Tanzania so I think Zambia will be

the third one to have that MoU,” Mr Ndayizeye said. At the same function, Burundi Ambassador to Zambia, Pascal Ruhomvymworo, acknowledged the country’s infrastructure development such as roads which he said were critical to trade. Ambassador Ruhomvymworo also acknowledge that Zambia’s business environment was dynamic. “We enjoy the relations with Zambia in terms of commerce through Lake Tanganyika and this needs to be enhanced,” he said. In response, ZACCI president, Chabuka Kawesha, agreed to purse a workable agreement through an MoU. Dr Kawesha hoped that through the MoU, the two chambers would be able

to open up doors both for Zambian business community in Burundi and vice versa to advance opportunities of trade within the steel industry which supported construction and many other sector of the respective countries. “We agree to your proposal to purse a working agreement through an MoU and we commit that within the coming of one month, we shall work with the team from the chamber in Burundi to ensure that we formalise the working agreement. “We want to be able to support what our governments are doing in terms of promoting economic diplomacy of building a strong economy around the great lakes region,” Dr Kawesha said.

Farmers urged to use mobile money for payments GOVERNMENT has appealed to farmers to embrace the use of mobile money as the 2021 crop marketing season kicks off. The Ministry of Finance recently released K657 million to the Food Reserve Agency to assist in the smooth implementation of the 2021 crop marketing programme. Southern Province Permanent Secretary Joyce Bwacha said farmers should adopt digital platforms such as mobile money as handle the selling of their produce. She said mobile money offers convenient, safe and secure cash handling options which garners should take advantage of. Ms. Bwacha was speaking in Choma on Monday when she officially opened the new Zamtel Choma Customer Service Centre. She commended Zamtel for opening the Service Center adding that the development will positively contribute towards the enhancement of Choma’s economic profile. “As Government, we would like to commend Zamtel for its efforts in providing affordable and quality services to the people of Choma and the entire Southern Province. The efforts by Zamtel fully speaks to His Excellency President Edgar Chagwa Lungu’s vision of taking development to all parts of the country without leaving anyone behind,” Ms. Bwacha said. She added, “The opening of this Service Centre is therefore a welcome development by Zamtel that will help exploit the business potential that Choma has to offer. I also wish to encourage Choma residents especially our youth to leverage this opportunity and fully utilize the opportunities for employment creation.” “Let me take this opportunity to call upon our farmers to take advantage of technologies such as mobile money in the selling of their produce. Platforms such as Zamtel Mobile Money offer a safe and reliable alternative payment option which should be encouraged for us by our farmers. We do not want to hear stories of farmers being swindled out of their hard earned money when they could easily deposit their money in Zamtel Mobile Money and transact whenever the need arises,” she stated. And Zamtel Senior Manager for Sales and Distribution Keith Banda said the opening of Choma Customer Service Centre is in line with the company’s new strategic direction of ensuring service and product access closer to the customer. “The opening of the Choma Service Centre follows the opening of a similar outlet at Makeni Mall in Lusaka sometime in February. I am pleased to announce that the Choma Service Centre is part of the over 80 Service Centres that Zamtel has rolled out across the country,” Mr Banda said. He added. “As a business we have over the years realized that one of the challenges our customers face is access to our products and services such as Mobile Money Services, SIM Sales and Replacement, Mobile Phone handsets and Top Ups.” “This Service Center, therefore, will provide convenience to the people of Choma, Pemba and surrounding areas.” Mr Banda said the programme to open Service Centres has already created employment opportunities for over 200 people, mainly youths. - ZANIS.

Develop Zambezi River Basin Investment strategy, Wina urges THE Ministry of National Development Planning and the Ministry of Water Development, Sanitation and Environmental Protection to design and develop the Zambezi River Basin Investment programme. Mrs. Wina said this will holistically manage the entire basin, by developing specific sub-basin interventions that positively impact the Zambian people, while safeguarding the interests of other state and non-state actors. The Vice President said water remains a vital element in the environment, hence the need to safeguard and manage the country’s water sources. She said this during the official opening of the 9th Zambia Water Forum and Exhibition (ZAWAFE) in Lusaka held under the theme “Innovative Action for water and sanitation: leaving no one behind”. “We together must ensure that water contamination, poor quality, low quantities and wastage should be avoided at all costs”, she said. Mrs Wina noted that the Covid-19 pandemic has stressed the importance of clean water, as it plays a critical role in maintaining public health and safety through good hygiene practices. She stressed that the forum could not have come at a better time than now when the country is intensifying the provision of clean water, as well as adequate sanitation to people across the country. “Government has prioritized the water resources management and development as well as water sanitation services under the Seventh National Development Plan.” She reminded. She stated that Cabinet took a decision on 10th August 2020 by declaring and gazetting 15th to 21st March every year, as the Zambia Water Week which is commemorated every year. Mrs Wina explained that the declaration has resulted in increased access to water supply from 64 percent in 2014 to the current 72 percent, while access to sanitation services has improved from 25 percent to 54 percent during the same period. She added that in line with the Seventh National Development Plan which is anchored on accelerating development efforts towards the vision 2030 without leaving anyone behind, government is now rolling out the rural water supply and urban on-site sanitation systems and regulations. And the Vice President appealed to all stakeholders to develop innovative technologies and ways of managing and developing water resources while mitigating the effects of climate change. And speaking at the same event, African Development Bank Representative Mary Mwenya commended the government on the various interventions put in place to enhance access to clean and safe water supply. Ms Mwenya however stated that it is imperative that the region comes up with alternative innovative solutions to address the challenges that most countries face with regards to the provision of water, especially in the times of the COVID-19 pandemic. She said there is need for concerted efforts from all cooperating partners to bridge the gap on the provision of water facilities between the urban and rural areas. - ZANIS.

LEAVING NO ONE BEHIND

Covid-19 has had a negative impact on the economy and with it, strain has been put on Government coffers but the proven success of the SCT has seen increased contributions to the the programme.

P

OVERTY remains high in most of rural Zambia but with the social cash transfer (SCT) programme several vulnerable households have been given relief. Covid-19 has had a negative impact on the economy and with it, strain has been put on Government coffers but the proven success of the SCT has seen increased contributions to the the programme. The cash transfer programme is meant to restore a level of dignity to the poorest of poor and with its continued roll out, more knowledge around the benefits should be made. Sixty percent of Zambia’s population, estimated at about 17.9 million, lives below the poverty line, and the levels of poverty in rural areas tend to be very high. The Zambia Demographic Health Survey of 2017/18 reveals that women headed households are more affected by poverty. With financing provided by the World Bank, the United Kingdom and Sweden, more than 370,000 households are now receiving regular cash transfers. A recent World Bank simulation indicates that if regular social cash transfers are provided to all current SCT beneficiaries, poverty in Zambia will reduce by six percentage points in 2021. “Providing cash directly in the hands of poor people has a proven impact in reducing poverty and increasing human capital,” said Emma Wadie Hobson, World Bank Task Team Leader for the Project. The latest evaluation of the SCT program, which aims to reduce extreme poverty and eradicate intergenerational poverty in the covered households, showed an increase in human capital and productivity. Households were found to have increased the land they operate by

18%, maize production increased by 8% and their livestock by 21%. Households also increased the material needs of children (clothes, shoes, blankets) being met by 30% and increased the number of children attending primary school by 10%. Through the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services, the government has been implementing the SCT Programme since 2003, and the World Bank Board has recently approved a second additional financing which will expand coverage to a total of 750,000 households in 2021 and 994,000 households by 2022. According to The World Bank, this support will enable timely and predictable disbursements of cash transfers to 30% of the Zambian population and 50% of the

country’s poor citizens by 2022. The programme is also in line with the government’s Seventh National Development Plan vision of “accelerating development efforts towards Vision 2030 without leaving anyone behind.” The pledge by the Patriotic Front leadership has seen youth, women's groups and the disabled receive empowerment funds. In terms of the social cash transfer, very often vulnerable households are made up of elderlys grand mothers looking after orphaned and sickly children. They are often unable to grow their own food and often live without proper housing or clothing. Many communities in rural and urban areas do have extremely vulnerable people who are being gradually lifted out of poverty.

Government recently released over K5 million to benefit 5,087 households in Lukulu district of Western Province, under the Social Cash Transfer programme. Lukulu District Commissioner Teddy Chimbinde says government is impressed with the prudent utilisation of the funds by the beneficiaries. Mr. Chimbinde says the programme has tremendously impacted on poverty reduction in the district. He says it is government’s resolve to continue devising timely interventions targeted at vulnerable sections of society to free them from the shackles of poverty. The Lukulu District Commissioner has also disclosed that more beneficiaries will by July this year be brought on board as

the financial support from government has unprecedentedly increased. By sharing SCT success stories more people may be encouraged to understand the strides that Government has made in alleviating poverty. It is erroneous to ignore the confidence exhibited by cooperating partners in imlementing the social cash transfer programme. The social cash transfer programme is proving to be successful only becaise the beneficiaries have utilised the funds appropriately. We must desist from underplaying the importance of the social cash transfer and instead recognise it for the role it plays in uplifitng the quality of life for many vulnerable people.

The Efford Chabala fact-file

GOALKEEPER EXTRAORDINARY BIRTH AND ROOTS Born and bred in the mining town of Mufulira, it was no surprise whatsoever that Efford Chabala, like every ambitious boy in his time, nursed and cherished the ambition that one day, he would play for Mufulira Wanderers, Zambia’s overall most successful team. Born January 28, 1960 and having initially played for the reserve side, Chabala would go on to become the longest serving shot-stopper for both club and country. – eclipsing the careers of both his predecessors Tolomeo Mwansa and Abraham Nkole of the 1970s fame.

STYLE AND NICKNAME A goalkeeper noted for his fearlessness and razor-sharp reflexes, he was also well known for stupendous saves – both from point blank as well as from afar or indeed from sudden-shooting situations which more often than not, catches most goalies with their pants down. Chabala was in a league of his own: he was the epitome of alertness and possessed a sense of anticipation like no other. Elsewhere, the affable Chabala was incomparable with regard to improvisation – a practice that was in evidence throughout his illustrious career, especially using his legs – at which he was master par excellence – bringing close comparisons with former Roan United and Rhokana United ((Nkana FC) and Zambia net-minder Emmanuel Mwape, former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton and indeed 1982 World Cup winning captain Dino Zoff. His name of Fitumba was not known widely, but only among his Wanderers’ fellow club-mates at Shinde Stadium, a moniker whose origin is shrouded in secrecy and ambiquity. Other Wanderers’ goalies of fame have had nicknames too. Mwansa was fondly called Juva while Nkole was dubbed Gordon Banks after the former Stoke City and England goalkeeper extraordinary. CLUB CAREER Having started his club career proper with the Wanderers ‘B’ team around 1978, chabala would soon win the confidence and trust of the then head-coach Dickson Makwaza (1977-1982 that the

honours with Wanderers (19801992, Chabala won the BP Top 8 Cup twice in 1984 and 1986 but would fuel controversy when, in the 1992 final, with Wanderers seemingly headed for success, leading comfortably 2-0 at the interval, allowed the Kitwe giants to crawl back and eventually turn the tables and run away 3-2 winners through fellow Gabon Air Disaster victim Kelvin Mutale’ brace and skipper Dennis Kabwe providing the other. To hit the nail on the head, Chabala was accused of letting in preventable goals especially the

Chabala married the Mpikaborn Joyce in 1981 and together they had five children – a girl and four boys. The first-born, Trasida, is now 35, a nurse working at Mufulira’s Ronald Ross Hospital, is a proud mother of four. The quartet boys, in order of birth, are Efford (2nd), Freeman (3rd), Kingsley (4th) and David Chabala Jr. (5th). Uniquely, all four boys are university graduates.

Chabala was in a league of his own: he was the epitome of alertness and possessed a sense of anticipation like no other. mercurial Chabala was elevated to the first-choice goalkeeper in 1980 – virtually taking over from Bernard Kabwe. Together with Ashious Melu, a new recruit from Konkola Blades and the Bwalya brothers – Benjamin Jr and Kalusha who joined the team in 1981 from neighbours Butondo Western Tigers in addition to the other set of brothers named Philemon Kaunda and Philemon Mulala and Frederick Kashimoto – Chabala and Co. would prove a formidable squad in the Zambian top-flight. Though Chabala missed on the prestigious individual national award of Zambia Footballer-ofthe-Year between 1983 and 1987

when his team-mates Melu (1983 and 1987), Kalusha (1984) and Johnson Bwalya (1986), Chabala would however find solace and consolation by being voted 1984 Sportsman of the Year. The closest Wanderers came to winning the league title with Chabala as a player was runnersup four times: in 1984 (beaten to the title by Power Dynamos by a single point – 33-32); in 1985 (beaten to the title by Nkana by yet a single point – 29-28 in a 2-points-for-a-win awarding system then); and 1989 and 1992 – on both occasions denied the coveted title by the same foe – Nkana FC. In pursuant of other domestic

two goals by Mutale. The charge that he was slapped with was that he was bought. He denied the charge. The accusation was so serious from both the Wanderers’ faithful and team management that the legendary goalkeeper was briefly banned for both club and country duties as punishment for his ‘transgression’. Whether Chabala actually betrayed his club colleagues or not, was not established for certain. His restoration at Wanderers and at national level followed swiftly. Elsewhere, Chabala was in the Wanderers team that won the 1988 Mosi Cup, thrashing Roan United 3-0 at Independence Stadium. Two years earlier, Chabala’s Wanderers, lost by the same margin to bitter rivals Nkana at the same venue who were hugely-inspired by an inform Beston Chambeshi who went on to win the 1988 national top-scorer award that year with 38 goals in all competitions.. Chabala’s most successful cup

haul at Wanderers was in the Heroes and Unity Cup as well as the Champion of Champions Cup tournaments which he won three times each. In the former showpiece, previously known as the Chibuku Cup, he was victorious in 1985, 1987 and 1988 while in latter championship, then sponsored by Colgate Palmolive, a Ndola based company, the celebrated goalkeeper emerged triumphant with Wanderers the trinity avenue in 1985, 1988 and 1992. The only two domestic honours Chabala failed to win with his childhood club was, of course, the Premier League crown and the less prestigious Charity Shield.

INTERNATIONAL CAREER Chabala burst onto the international scene way back in 1983 when he took over from Red Arrows; Ghost Mulenga who sadly passed on that year after suffering from a bout of malaria. Since then, the man who endeared himself overly to the Zambian football family, kept his place for country with such command that only the Gabon Air Disaster would prevent him from extending his unrivalled longevity and reign between the national team sticks. The man they nicknamed Fitumba is on record as the longest-serving Zambi goalkeeper ever, having stood between the sticks for country for a decade – virtually consigning his No.2 Richard Mwanza to the bench for that long – serve for the period when Chabala was suspended owing to the 1992 BP Top 8 Cup final already referred to. Elsewhere, Chabala had been to three AFCON finals in 1986, 1990 and 1992 and was destined to make it fourth in 1994 but for the horrific Gabon plane crash that claimed 17 of his colleagues and two coaches and 10 others aboard the ZAF Buffalo plane. Chabala’s highest honour at the three AfCON outings was of course minting bronze during the 1990 Algeria-held championship when Zambia beat Senegal 1-0 with a Webster Chikabala lone goal in the third play-off at Algiers’ Stade 5 Julillet 1962 on March 5, 1990. Chikabala would also be named in the CAF Best Team of the Tournament alongside teammate Samuel Chomba.

Extra Sports Benin deny Chipolopolo a win AARON MUBANGA writes @SunZambian

THE Zambia national soccer team was on Tuesday evening held to a 2 – 2 draw by Benin in a game that was played in Cotonou, Benin at the Mathieu Kerekou Stadium. Zambia coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic seemed decisive in his team selection as he benched Klings Kangwa and Collins Sikombe who both under-performed against Senegal and brought in Prince Mumba and Spencer Sautu. There was a change in goal as Cyril Mwenya came in for Lameck Siame. It looked to be a 50 / 50 affair from the start but the Zambia defense looked jittery and they were made to pay in the 13th minute when Cibrio Soukou cut through the middle of defense to shoot past a sliding Tandi Mwape for the opener. Zambia responded five minutes later following a good move that ended with Salulani Phiri slamming the ball home from inside the box after Roger Kola played the ball into his path when he made a defense splitting run. The Chipolopolo extended their lead with the last kick of the half when Tandi Mwape finished off a header from Sautu Spencer who had found space at the far post from a corner. Zambia made a change at the break bringing in Collins Sikombe for the impressive Mumba. Despite finding good spaces in attack, the Kola and Moses Phiri lacked the cutting edge to finish off the game. The hosts persistence paid off in the 80th minute when substitute Yohan Roche finished off a rebound from Chibwe who had made an initial save from a point blank header. Zambia looked rattled after that but they still made a couple of very good chances that they failed to utilize for the game to end locked at 2 – 2. Zambia will next play Sudan on Friday in Khartoum. - ZAMFOOT

‘CLUB STANDARDS BENEFICIAL’ .. FAZ boss attributes improved CAF performance to licensing FROM BACK PAGE Kamanga notes that clubs such as Zanaco and Zesco United who were among the first to embrace the club licensing have seen the positive impact of the process. He says that last year the Association had challenges in meeting the minimum Club Licensing requirements for all the four clubs that qualified for CAF games and had to negotiate for provisional licenses for them to take part in the games. The FAZ president said the aim of the workshop is to continue to engage clubs and share the positive impacts that club licensing will continue to have on shaping the future landscape of Zambian club football. And Kamanga says the Association has continued to engage CAF to develop an implementation plan that is based on the specific challenges and opportunities in Zambia. He says that FIFA has revised the 2013 Club Licensing Regulation and introduced the 2021 Editions separately for men and women and also introduced the catalogue of fines for violation of the Club Licensing regulation.

THE FAZ Women’s League second round got underway last weekend with several mouthwatering encounters and interesting results recorded in all the four games played in Week 14, while ZESCO Ndola Girls maintained their stay at the top of the log standings after they defeated Queens Academy in a rescheduled Match Week 7 played at President Stadium. Lusaka Dynamos Ladies Football club recorded a hardfought 2-1 victory over Nkwazi Queens in a game that was played at NASDEC Sports Complex in Lusaka. The Elite Ladies captain Xiomara Mapepa opened the scores in the 19th minute heading home from close range after benefiting from the cross. However, Nkwazi Queens equalized three minutes later through Dorothy Daka who was found in free acres of space after a well-taken free-kick from Naomi Mumba with Chitete Esther Munsaka left with no chance after she came out of her line to level the scores. The Elite kept pushing and their hard work paid off almost at the half-hour mark with a beautiful long-range stunning goal out of the 18-yard box from Eunice Namfukwe to send back the Elite in the lead with a 2-1 Scoreline going at the break. The second half did not have so much action as the business was done in the first half and the final score was 2-1 to Lusaka Dynamos Ladies. In a lunchtime kick-off at 13:00hrs in Ndola, Indeni Roses

completed a double over Bauleni United Sports Academy (BUSA), Queens, after a 2-1 victory in a game played at Indeni Roses Sports Complex. Women’s Under-20 defender Thelma Phiri opened the scores for Indeni before Grace Kamanga added the second goal in the second half to make it 2-0 for the coach Wisdom Kaira drilled lasses. BUSA’s second-half substitute Regina Chanda scored the consolation goal for the Bauleni based side as they succumbed to a 2-1 loss at the hands of Indeni. In another lunchtime kickoff at 13:00hrs, Queens Academy lost 2-1 to ZESCO Ndola Girls in a rescheduled Week 7 encounter which was played at Kabwe’s President Stadium and beamed live on ZNBC TV3. Zesco found the back of the net through Mary Banda and Happy Pinto while Queens scored through Evelyn Tembo to make it 2-1 to Zegalicious a result which pushed the coach

William Zulu drilled lasses to 27 points on the summit of the log standings. The action continued on Sunday with two intriguing encounters involving draw specialists National Assembly who visited ZISD while another draw specialist YASA Queens hosted Police Dove Queens. At Independence Stadium, ZISD hosted National Assembly and it was the Parliamentarians who took an early lead through Donaria Simaundu finishing off a great assist from Felistus Phiri to make it 1-0. However, ZISD came back more organized in the second half and it was Esther Chikondi Phiri with an excellent longrange shot arguably the goal of the weekend leaving Agnes Banda in goal for Assembly with no chance as the final score ended 1-1 and this was Assembly’s 8th draw of the season while it was the 3rd draw for ZISD which is the second back-to-back draw. Elsewhere, Stubborn YASA

Queens hosted The Fearless Police Dove Queens at Hospice Ground. It was a good day at the office for YASA who have also done a double over Dove as Patricia Lampi’s second-half strike from a free-kick was enough for YASA who won 1-0 and another defeat for the Fearless Dove.
