THE first ever class of heavy equipment repair in Zambia has threatened to sue the Northern Technical College (NORTEC) for not issuing them with diplomas since 2017. The former students complained that efforts to get their diplomas had failed despite many efforts. The students who sought anonymity said the college asked them to put their complaint in writing when they went to enquire about the progress concerning the matter seven months ago. The students were speaking in separate interviews in Kitwe. Today, NORTEC ranks among Zambia’s leading technical training providers due to its undiminishing contribution to both our nation and beyond.

The college which is accredited with the Technical Educational Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training Authority (TEVETA) introduced a six (6) months Heavy Equipment Repair bridging course for Automotive Technicians in 2017, with the view of providing opportunities for multi-skilling

and addressing the growing demand for technicians. “We put our complaint in writing as requested but the response we were given was that our certificates were still stuck at TEVETA for reasons the college said they did not know about. “And when we followed-up

the matter with TEVETA, we were told that the authority did not have any outstanding matters of this nature with the college as everything was cleared,” they said. The former students complained that the problem was affecting them as they were missing out on employment opportunities stating that those that managed to get jobs were missing out on promotions because their employers demanded for the diplomas. They said it was unfair that despite having paid a lot of money during the training, the college had not shown any zeal to sort the matter out. Efforts to get a comment from the college failed as the principal was reportedly unwell while contact numbers for the examinations office went unanswered

Use music to promote good morals, musicians told GOVERNMENT has called on Zambian artists to use music to promote good morals at family and national level to enhance peace and unity in the country ahead of the August 12 general elections.

Northern Province Permanent Secretary Lloyd Chakaba said artists should use their talents and influence in society to anchor their music on the promotion of peace and unity during this election period. Mr Chakaba said President Edgar Lungu wants Zambia to continue being a beacon of peace in Africa and beyond after this year’s elections. Mr Chakaba said this in a speech

read on his behalf by Northern Province Deputy Permanent Secretary Sineva Kambenja during the launch of a gospel album by the Remnant Choir of Kapongolo Seventh-Day Adventist Church (SDA) in Kasama District. Mr. Chakaba said peace and unity are key pillars of Zambia’s political stability which should be cherished by all citizens regardless of their political affiliation. The Provincial Permanent Secretary further urged gospel artists in the region to be ambassadors of peace in their respective churches and communities. “There is need to use good music

to promote good morals in the families and society to mitigate unfaithfulness in marriage, mistreatment of one another and reduce gender based violence,” Mr Chakaba said. He further commended the Seventh-Day Adventist Church for their good works in winning more people to Christ. And Kasama East Mission District Pastor Mosten Mulenga said music is a strong weapon which can be used to soften sinful hearts. Pastor Mulenga said the Church will always support Government’s effort in strengthening the moral fibre of society through music and Biblical teachings._ZNBC

The Commission notes that political players should be wary of people’s human rights, in order not to infringe on them as they conduct their door to door campaigns. National Human Rights legal Counsel, Kims Banda said the commission will also closely monitor how the campaigns will be conducted, to ensure that fair play is exhibited as parties involved bargain for support from the public ahead of the August 12, general elections. Mr Banda said this during a two day district political dialogue meeting held in Chinsali Muchinga Province, to discuss adherence to the Public Order Act, during the campaign period amid the COVID-19 pandemic. “Do not infringe on individual rights in the name of conducting door to door campaign least you will be sued,” he said. And Mr Banda has appealed to all political players to adhere to the advice and health guidelines that have been heightened, as the country experiences the third wave of the COVID-19. And political parties present also called on the police to be impartial when regulating campaigns, while ensuring peace and security to its citizens. The political parties also resolved to form a committee that will look into human rights violations, during and after the campaign period. The committee will include the Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs), political parties, as well as a human rights activist in the district. The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has suspended political party rallies due to rising numbers of COVID-19. ZANIS

Ubuntu News GMO products must be assessed before marketing them - NBA THE National Biosafety Authority (NBA) has ordered that all genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and GMO products must be assessed before being placed on the Zambian market. NBA Chief Executive Officer Lackson Tonga said it is critical that all GMOs and GMO products are assessed to determine their safety before they are imported into the country. In a press statement issued to ZANIS in Lusaka today by NBA Communications Officer Sandra Lombe, Mr Tonga said the risk assessment will be undertaken before the GMOs and GMO products are imported and put on the market or released into the environment. He named food, feed and pharmaceuticals as products highly inclined to contain GMOs. Speaking ahead of the World Food Safety Day (WFSD) which falls on June 7, Mr Tonga said subjecting GMOs and GMO products to risk assessment helps in identifying, analyzing and evaluating the potential risks that may negatively impact humans, animals and the environment. “Safe food is important now and also for the future. That is why risk assessment on food products is inevitable. Risk assessment helps in identifying any harms a product can cause to the health of humans animals or if such a product is detrimental to the environment. As the Authority mandated to handle matters related to GMOs, it is our duty to ensure safety of humans, animals and the environment,” said Mr. Tonga. He warned that the Authority will not hesitate to penalize any organization or individual breaking the provisions of the Biosafety Act. Mr Tonga advised consumers to be suspicious of any GMOs and GMO product that has not been approved by the NBA. “Therefore, it is imperative that researchers, farmers, distributors, suppliers and retailers/traders obtain or seek approvals for GMOs and products that may contain GMOs to ensure safety”, said Mr Tonga. He pointed out that the 2021 World Food Safety Day (WFSD) theme of ‘Safe food today for a healthy tomorrow’, aims to draw attention and inspire action to help prevent, detect and manage foodborne risks, contribute to food security, human health, economic prosperity, agriculture, market access, tourism and sustainable development. Mr Tonga stressed that production and consumption of safe food has immediate and long-term benefits for people, the planet and the economy. ZANIS

NHIMA TO ACCREDIT 30 MINI HOSPITALS T HE National Health Insurance Management Agency (NHIMA) says it will start accrediting all 30 mini hospitals government is building which are earmarked for commissioning this year. NHIMA Director General James Kapesa said his agency will from June this year begin accrediting all the 30 mini hospitals expected to be completed by government out of the targeted 108. Mr. Kapesa told ZANIS in an interview that the development is aimed at ensuring that Zambians across the country leaving away from NHIMA accredited government hospitals and other health facilities access health care services being provided under the agency. Mr. Kapesa noted that countrywide tours that his organization has undertaken reveal that most members of

the National Health Insurance Scheme are not accessing the health care services because they live far away from government district hospitals. He said that mini hospi-

tals are expected to bridge the gap in provision and access to quality health care services. “It has emerged that a lot of members are leaving away from district hospitals,

Zambia, Lithuania seek enhanced diplomatic cooperation THE Republic of Lithuania has proposed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Zambia to enhance economic and political cooperation between the two countries. The proposal was made in Stockholm, Sweden recently when Lithuanian Ambassador to Sweden, Giedrius Cekuolis presented a draft copy of the MoU to Zambia’s Ambassador in that country, Rose Salukatula, who is also accredited to the Nordic and Baltic states. The MoU is a culmination of discussions between Ambassador Salukatula and director for Latin America, Africa, Asia and Pacific Department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Lithuania, Audrius Bruzga early in January this year. Lithuania is one of the three Baltic countries located in north-eastern Europe with diplomatic relations with Zambia. According to a press statement issued to ZANIS in Lusaka today by Counsellor at the Zambian Embassy in Sweden, Nicky Shabolyo, the proposed MoU seeks to strengthen friendly relations, establish an efficient and practical procedure for inter-ministerial political consultations and further encourage cooperation in various economic fields. The proposal further seeks to see Zambia and Lithuania hold regular bilateral consultations to review all aspects of their relations, and exchange views on

regional and international issues of mutual interest. Ambassador Salukatula has since described the proposed MoU as a “big step” towards strengthening relations between Zambia and Lithuania since the establishment of diplomatic relations almost 20 years ago. The Zambian envoy pointed out that in her earlier meeting with Mr. Bruzga, it was observed that not much economic and political cooperation had taken place between Zambia and Lithuania because of the absence of a framework for engagement. “Your coming demonstrates that Lithuania is committed to strengthening relations with Zambia. Such meetings are important as they will eventually help establish strong relations at top government level and even generally between the peoples of the two countries. This is a very important document that will help us further develop our relations,” she said. Lithuania has also made a separate submission of proposed areas of economic cooperation which included agriculture and food industry, information and communication technology (ICT), financial technology (Fintech) sector, life

sciences, and talent-based entrepreneurial schemes for non-European Union businesses. In the proposal, Lithuania seeks possibilities for cooperation in areas that create added value such as ICT, fintech and life sciences. And Ambassador Salukatula and Ambassador Cekuolis have agreed to arrange a digital event through which Zambian and Lithuanian experts in the sectors mentioned in the proposal will meet and agree on advancing collaboration. The Zambian envoy has since assured her Lithuanian counterpart that Zambia is a haven of peace and has favourable laws that safeguard and secure investments. Ambassador Cekuolis was accompanied by Counsellor, Donatas Butkus and Commerce Attaché Aleksandras Laurinavicius. ZANIS

and what the mini hospitals are doing is getting health services closer and closer to the communities,” said Mr Kapesa. Mr. Kapesa said the accrediting of the 30 mini hospitals is a milestone in that it will ensure that NHIMA services are progressively and consistently reaching the community and increase the number of Zambians accessing the health care. He said the agency will soon announce the accrediting of private hospitals to enable more Zambians access and benefit from the national health insurance scheme. Since inception on October 1 2019, NHIMA has captured over 950, 000 members of the targeted 3.4 million people and its healthcare services can only be accessed from about 141 government hospitals and health centres across the country. - ZANIS

LCC Town Clerk Alex Mwansa said Covid-19 cases were fast spreading in communities hence the development of the initiative to contain the disease at the grassroots. Mr. Mwansa said Lusaka City Council is grateful to partners that have augmented his office’s efforts in carrying out activities aimed at reducing the spread of the coronavirus especially in densely populated areas. Speaking during the handover of Covid-19 materials in Lusaka, Mr. Mwansa commended the Lusaka Water Security Initiative (LuWSI) for coordinating activities that aim at promoting and strengthening community structures in the response to Covid-19 in five (5) wards. “I am delighted to be part of a team that has endeavoured to ensure that the Covid-19 is slowly but surely rolled out with the support from LuWSI and GIZ,” he said. Ubuntu Court Haunted man threatens relative with death… Man faces difficulties in life A MAN whose life has hit a rough patch accused his relative of having allegedly murdered an unknown person and cast the spirit of the murdered person upon his life causing him to face difficulties in life and his children to fail at school. It is believed after Obey Gwetsayi saw his life take a downturn he consulted a prophet who told him that his cousin Kudzai Gwetsayi allegedly killed a person and then cast the spirit upon him causing him to face extreme difficulties in life and his children to fail at school. After that Obey confronted his cousin at his house in Njube suburb and accused him of having cast the spirit of the person he allegedly murdered upon him. Obey poured out his heart saying that the spirit caused him to lead a poor life. It also caused his children to fail at school. He also accused Kudzai of having allegedly cast the same spirit upon his mother. He also made chilling threats at Kudzai while declaring that if he failed to exorcise the spirit he would kill him. Fearing for his life Kudzai sought legal intervention at Western Commonage court. “My cousin Obey Gwetsayi troubles me. He usually comes to my house and shouts on top of his voice saying I killed a person after that I cast the spirit upon his life. And the spirit of the person I killed causes him to struggle in life and lead a very poor life. And it also causes his children to fail at school. He also accuses me of having cast the same spirit upon my mother which he claims causes her to fall sick. He swears at me while declaring that if I fail to reverse the bewitchment, he would axe me to death and he would also murder my children,” he said. Obey did not attend the court. The presiding magistrate Jeconia Prince Ncube granted Kudzai an interim peace order which compels Obey not to visit his cousin at Njube and not to verbally abuse him, and not to threaten to kill him.

NAREP PRESIDENT DEFENDS NOMINATION, ATTACKS PETITIONER GRACE CHAILE LESOETSA writes @SunZambian

S

TEVEN Nyirenda has told the Constitutional Court that the reason Charles Maboshe has petitioned his Presidential nomination is because he wants National Restoration Party (NAREP) to join the UPND Alliance. This is in a matter where Mr Maboshe, leader of the opposing NAREP faction seeks a declaration and an order that the nomination filed by Mr Nyirenda on May 19, 2021 with the Returning Officer and all documents in support of his nomination for election of the office of president in the August 12 elections is null and void. Mr Nyirenda and his running mate Ms Lucy Changwe are first and second respondents in the petition while the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) are cited as third respondent. In his petition, Mr Maboshe stated that Mr Nyirenda by resolution of the national executive committee was expelled from NAREP on August 12, 2020. Mr Nyirenda however challenged his expulsion through legal proceedings under cause number 2020/ HP/799 and the matter which is before Judge Wilfred Muma is yet to be heard at interparte stage nor to determine

the injunction. In response, Mr Nyirenda

stated that him and Ms Changwe did not violate any

of the Party’s Constitutional Provision in the NAREP constitution which can warrant to being disqualified in the 2021 general elections. He stated that he had been an active member of NAREP for at least one year as per constitutional provision of the party, therefore qualifies to be elected as party Republican Presidential candidate. “ That the main reason why the Petitioner wants me and my running mate to be disqualified is not that we are in breach of the NAREP Constitution or rather the High Court litigation; but rather that he wants NAREP to join the UPND Alliance ,” he contended. Mr Nyirenda argued that the litigation under cause 2020/HP/799 has not paralyzed the operation and governance of the party to make decision regarding who it can adopt as its Republican Presidential candidate. He prays that the substantive reliefs sought by Mr Maboshe in his petition be dismissed with costs for multiplicity to the respondents. He Mr Nyirenda also wants a declaration to uphold the decision of ECZ chairperson Justice Esau Chulu allowing him to run as Republican Presidential candidate and his running mate respectively.

Chester releases 'Libela' TERENCE MISELO Writes@SunZambia

MUSICIAN Chester More Power has come strong with a brand new single ' Libela'. The ' Banjo' hitmaker brings this new song in apparent response to all those that are blaming artistes that are singing political songs. Although Chester is not making direct reference, he is clearly justifying that his music is business and he does it to earn a living. ' Libela' means 'in advance' and Chester is saying business requires

that you get paid in advance. He relates this to his singing that he does music as a business, and when he is paid in advance, he will sing for any client. ' Libela' has a typical Chester feel with great danceable beat. It has so far attracted a huge following and airplay so far.

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck's romantic reconciliation getting serious ACCORDING to a new report in Closer magazine, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are already discussing “settling down" after reconciling. The former couple recently rekindled their romance after they first dated in 2002 – where they got engaged after two months of dating, and split 18 months later – and sources have now said the pair are so close that friends wouldn’t be surprised if another “quickie engagement” was on the cards. An insider said: “Jen’s cloud nine – she and Ben are well and truly back on. Despite all those years apart, their feelings have come rushing back. It all feels so natural. “After the heartache she's been through over the last few months, Jen's admitted Ben has really helped her heal and his doting on her, which has given her faith in a happily ever after. “They've already spoken about the future and settling down, which she's full of joy and excitement about. “Friends wouldn't be surprised if they have a quickie engagement or even a wedding like they'd once planned.” The 51-year-old singer and actress is said to be convinced she and Ben, 48, are “meant to be” after their paths crossed again this year following her split from exfiancé Alex Rodriguez and his separation from Bond girl Ana de Armas. The source added: “Jen truly believes that all paths have led to this one and that she and Ben are meant to be. It really is like a movie plot and she's invested in their fairy tale. “They've spent a lot of time going over mistakes they made the first time and they are making a conscious effort not to let outside influences affect their relationship again. “They've agreed not to speak about each other in interviews and generally keep a lower profile than they did the first time around.” And the couple still have “chemistry” together, and now want to start the “life they’d always planned together”. Speaking to Closer magazine, the insider said: “They've both been through a lot over the last two decades but, ultimately, they never lost their chemistry. “They are both hoping that after reuniting all these years later, they can look forward to the life they'd always planned together.”

Ubuntu Business Mupika Silk Farm creates 4,000 job opportunities THE Mupika Silk Farm has increased its Zambian labour force from the initial 2,000 to 4,000 to work on the US$31 million silk project in Mpika district of Muchinga Province. Sericulture Projects Manager Chewe Mulenga disclosed that the increase in the labour force was enabled so as to allow the company export finished product by adding value to the materials and not just raw materials. Others projects include construction of a health post, police post , upgrading of two primary schools to secondary schools and a filling station which will service both the staffs, community and the general public. COMESA UTILISE CTMS TO TRACK COVID-19 BUUMBA CHIMBULU writes @SunZambian

A

REGIONAL electronic Corridor Trip Monitoring System (CTMS) is one of the immediate remedial response to Covid-19 in an effort to improve border transactions, says Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA). CTMS was approved last year by the tripartite group to allow cross border road transport operators, drivers, regulators and law enforcement agencies to record and monitor driver wellness data such as Covid-19 test results. COMESA Secretary General Chileshe Kapwepwe, said the Covid-19 pandemic had exposed the shortcomings of the African health in-

frastructure and the fragility of the transport sector. Ms Kapwepwe therefore citied the CTMS as one of the immediate remedial response to the pandemic. She said this in her address to the 12th join meeting conducted virtually for COMESA’s ministers of infrastructure. “The Covid-19 pandemic has exposed the shortcomings of the African health infrastructure, the fragility of the transport sector (especially the aviation sector) and the vital role that ICT sector plays in sustaining economic and social activities during lockdowns and implementation of social distancing,” she said. In her address, Ms Kapwepwe underscored the importance of infrastructure in protecting the economy

and people’s lives. And COMESA ministers of infrastructure urged member states to deploy regional ICT systems such as CTMS to enhance data and information sharing. They believed that deploying such would improve regulation and progressively digitise border transactions and avoid paper-based transactions which are easy to falsify and are a Covid-19 vector. Meanwhile, COMESA called on member states to scale up programmes to upgrade and maintain infrastructure facilities. In their 12th join meeting conducted virtually, the ministers of infrastructure also called for the adaptation and implementation of COMESA transit instruments to improve transport cor-

ridors efficiency. According to the communique, the ministers responsible for Transport, Energy and Information, Communication Technology (ICT) acknowledged the huge infrastructure efficiency gap across the region as a pressing policy priority. The African Development Bank (AfDB) estimated that the annual infrastructure funding gap was between US$68 billion and US$108 billion across the continent. In their communiqué, the ministers invited Member States to take up the financing, technical assistance, and capacity building opportunities available under the Regional Infrastructure Finance Facility (RIFF) of the World Bank and other development partners to help address the gap.

Lithuania, Zambia seek economic cooperation THE Lithuanian government is seeking economic cooperation with Zambia in key sectors such as agriculture and food industry, ICT and Financial Technology. The proposed economic corporation with Zambia further extends to sectors like life sciences, and talent-based entrepreneurial schemes for non-European Union businesses. Lithuanian Ambassador to Sweden Giedrius Cekuolis has presented a draft copy of a proposed Memorandum of Understanding which will act as a Framework for economic corporation to Zambia’s Ambassador to Sweden Rose Salukatula in Stockholm. The MoU is a culmination of discussions between Ms. Salukatula, who is accredited to the

Nordic and Baltic States and Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Director of the Latin America, Africa, Asia and Pacific Department Audrius Bruzga. And Ms. Salukutula has described the proposed MoU as a “big step” towards strengthening relations between the two countries since establishing diplomatic relations almost 20 years ago. This is contained in a statement issued by Counsellor at the Zambian Embassy in Sweden Nicky Shabolyo. The ambassador explained that not much had taken place in terms of cooperation between Zambia and Lithuania because of the absence of a framework within which engagement and interaction could take place. The Zambian envoy adds that Lithuania’s

proposed economic corporation demonstrates its commitment to strengthening relations with Zambia. She has noted that such meetings are key as they will eventually help establish strong relations at top government level and even generally between the peoples of the two countries. Ms. Salukatula and her Lithuanian counterpart also agreed to arrange a digital event through which Zambian and Lithuanian experts in the sectors mentioned in the proposal could meet and agree on furthering collaboration. She assured her Lithuanian counterpart that Zambia had enjoyed peace for a long time and had laws in place which ensured investments were protected. - ZNBC.

MAINTENANCE works on Kariba North Bank (KNB) Power Station which led to Zesco Limited affecting a 15-day emergency load management last month after the generating unit developed a fault, have been completed. And Zesco says the second stage of load management which was supposed to be im-plemented this month for 15 days would not take place following the resumption of full power supply at KNB power station. Acting senior manager, corporate affairs, Hazel Zulu said in an interview that the maintenance works were completed two days before the stipulated 15 days and the generating unit is back on supply. “We had said we would work on the machines at Kariba North Bank power station in 15 days but on the 12th day we had completed the work and we are back on full power supply,’’ she said. Ms. Zulu explained that the second stage of 15-day load management which was supposed to be implemented this month would not take off because for now, maintenance works on the generating units at Kafue Gorge Upper (KGU) would not be undertaken. She however said the nation would be notified when maintenance works on the generating units at Kafue Gorge Upper would be undertaken. Zesco had announced that it would affect 15-day load management effective 10 May 2021 from 17:00 to 21:00 hours and would run for 15 days, whilst the second stage would be implemented in June 2021, for another 15 days. Emergency maintenance works which were being carried out were urgent and could not be postponed as doing so would risk the safety of the generating units which might lead to severe damage to equipment and compromise the future available generation capacity to meet the system demand, the company said.

the detection of 738 new transmissions out of 6,987 tests conducted across the country in a 24 hour period. Dr. Malama attributed the rise in numbers to the advent of the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic which has not only increased the numbers of transmission but also increased the number of deaths being recorded as a result of the coronavirus. It has also been disclosed that fatalities are being recorded in all age groups and hence the need for schools to follow the guidelines given by the Ministry of Health. Zambia has done well in implementing a multisectoral response to te coronavirus pandemic. “We had projected that the third wave would hit us around this time, learning from what was happening globally and on the continent. We remain committed to ensure that all the pillars in our response continue to be strengthened,” the Permanent secretary indicated. Following the donation of 100,000 doses of Sinopharm

Coach hails women team for Battle of Zambezi Rugby win

Continued from Page 12

Chibamba said the team had been impressive despite having been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic which impacted the rugby league in Zambia. He noted that despite the triumph in Zimbabwe, the Zambia Rugby women’s team nicknamed the Lady Eagles will have to improve in defense ahead of the next game. Chibamba said the Lady Eagles wouldn’t have allowed a lot of goals if they had worked on their defense before the games in Zimbabwe. “We have been hit with Covid-19 and last season was a complete shutdown for us. The ladies team have only played like three games at their respective clubs so coming

straight into an international game and winning after playing three games back at home is a plus for the team,” Chibamba said. “However, we really need to work on our defense and the way we spread the ball. You know ladies are not like men so we really want to work on that because if we had worked on our defense, the score line wouldn’t have been like that,” he noted. Zimbabwe Rugby Union had lined up friendly matches against the Zambia national rugby teams that saw the Under-20 Zimbabwe Rugby men’s team beat Zambia 65-12 in the second game of the Battle of the Zambezi Rugby tour.

Rhoda says Olympics preps going well CHISHIMBA BWALYA writes @SunZambian

SPRINTER Rhodah Njobvu says her preparations for next month’s Olympic Games are going well despite the postponement of the Algeria-slated African Championships which would have given her international exposure before going to the games.

Njobvu who was hoping to use the competition as part of Olympics preparations is among a list of 14 Zambian athletes that were supposed to take part in the athletics championships at the end of June before they were postponed again due to the resurgence of COVID-19 cases. Following the rescheduling, the athlete has continued her local preparations with national team coach Douglas Kalembo who has mostly been pairing her against male athletes as a way of improving her timing.
