JCTR fights poverty in Solwezi STEPHEN MWEWA writes @SunZambian

The Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection or JCTR says it is committed to capacity building members of the public with Social, Economic and Cultural Rights, in a bid to improve their welfare in their communities. Solwezi based, JCTR Social and Economic Development Programme Officer Michomyiza Diyedone said lack of knowledge on Social, Economic and Cultural Rights among members of the public has negatively affected them lacking access to fight for quality education, health, water and sanitation ser-

vices in their localities. Mr Diyedone said it is for this more reason that, his faith-based organization has embarked on capacity building workshop on such rights so members of the public have knowledge on how they can engage office bearers to provide them with social amenities in their communities, such as good school infrastructures, health facilities clean and safe water for drinking as well as sanitation. He was speaking yesterday at Kasama’s Pastoral centre when he officially opened a capacity-building workshop on social, economic and cultural rights for members of the community drawn from

various parts of Kasama district. And speaking on behalf of the participants Ulagulata Mutale bemoaned that lack of clean and safe water for drinking in some communities in Kasama district is a great infringement on the social, economic and cultural rights of people, as most of them drink unsafe and contaminated water drawn from streams and un-coverd bole-holes. Mis Mutale urged the government to prioritise digging bole-holes in such communities and extend piped water reticulation supply system so that members of the public enjoy their rights.

South youth, women candidates get sponsorship ANDREW MUKOMA writes @SunZambian

THE Jimmy Carter Foundation under the Advancing Women and Youths in Governance project has sponsored a total of 15 youth and women candidates who have since been adopted by different political parties in Monze and Gwembe districts, Southern Province. The six months project funded by the foundation to the tune of Us $ 5,000 (roughly K110, 000) is targeted women and youths in the two Districts. This is part of its objective to promote participation of both youths and women in governance issues thereby reduce the existing gender inequalities. Gender Justice Director Collins Mumba said the Carter foundation funded his organisation to advance women and youths in governance in the two Districts. He explained to ZANIS in Monze that out of 16 wards in Gwembe a total of 13 youths and women were adopted to stand as councillors under the Patriotic Front (PF), United Party for National Development (UPND), and the Socialist Party. Mr Mumba added that in Monze two women contesting for the National Assembly were also adopted under the Democratic Party and Socialist party. “We have a total of 15 women and youths who adopted from the PF, UPND, DP, and the Socialist party under the Advancing women and youths project funded by the Jimmy Carter Foundation at the tune of US$5,000 for 6 months,” Mr. Mumba said. “I must add that for the first time since 1964 in the history of Gwembe District, we now have four women who were adopted and contesting as councillors and for us that is a huge milestone and this has been made possible by the Carter Foundation,” he added. Mr Mumba emphasized the need for all political parties to realise that it was a constitutional right for women to be supported and stand as elective positions for an allinclusive governance system. He thanked the Carter Foundation for the financial support towards women and youths saying such projects has potential to help the country attain the both Regional and International Protocols on reducing Gender Inequalities in politics and governance systems.

T

HE Road Development Agency (RDA) has attributed the stagnation on the 1.2 billion united States dollars Lusaka/Ndola dual carriage way to financial constraints following a directive by the Ministry of Finance to postpone the construction on the project. Mrs. Zulu

PMRC calls for collective hands to fight Covid-19 POLICY Monitoring and Research Centre, (PMRC) Executive Director Bernadette Zulu has described the resurgence of the coronavirus pandemic third wave as a call to discipline and collective responsibility in averting the spread of the virus. Mrs. Zulu says that the cumulative number of confirmed cases and deaths which are now standing at 100,278 and 1,308 respectively with a positivity rate of 11% as of June 6, 2021, is a reminder that the COVID-19 is still a big threat to Zambia and the world at large, despite efforts from medical professionals to create awareness Mrs. Zulu said the country has recorded a sudden increase in the number of COVID-19 cases. “As the world is under threat of this third wave of COVID-19, individual discipline and collective responsibility in adhering to public health guidelines will be crucial in averting the further spread of the virus,” said Mrs. Zulu. Furthermore Mrs. Zulu urged all to take note as the country transitions into the colder months of winter while political campaigns are underway to avoid public gatherings as these are spreaders of the virus. “Medical professionals have continued to create awareness on the negative impacts of complacency and reluctance to conform to public health guidelines,’’ complained Mrs. Zulu. Meanwhile Mrs. Zulu also called on everyone to get vaccinated against the COVID-19. “With the coming of AstraZeneca vaccine, it is imperative that every eligible citizen seeks vaccination as soon as possible,’’ said Mrs. Zulu. On June 2, 2021, Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary for Technical Services, Dr Kennedy Malama announced that Zambia had entered the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic. - ZANIS Saturday 25 April, 2020

ANDREW MUKOMA writes @SunZambian THE Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) says despite the authority growing the broadcast industry in the country, it is concerned with the quality and content of the media houses. Director- Standards, Licencing and Compliance Eustace Nkandu has observed that some television stations and radio stations are still struggling to come up content without repetition of their programmes while some television sta-

tions are having challenges with quality picture. Mr Nkandu said that this is not withstanding the fact that the country so far has a total of 139 radio stations both community and commercial and a total of 35 television stations both commercial and community. He speaking during his presentation on IBA's roles and functions at the ongoing practical course in safety and security, standards, and ethics of good conduct for journalists going on at the Zambia Police Service Training College in Lilayi. Mr Nkandu said that this is the more reason why the

authority has always been emphasizing on it's function of promoting pluraristic and diverse broadcasting industry in Zambia. "As Independent Broadcasting Authority-IBA, we give licences not to encourage monopoly but encourage competition and also set the required level of local content," he said. "So far as Independent Broadcasting AuthorityIBA, we have done well in growing the industry but we are concerned with the quality of content and picture from some radio and television stations. We feel we need to do more on

that," Mr Nkandu said. Meanwhile, Bloggers of Zambia Executive Director Richard Mulonga has observed that in many cases most journalists in the country do not consider their safety and security whenever they are covering some events. Mr Mulonga said that journalists must begin to prioritize their safety and security at all times without putting too much trust in their sources. He said that this is security concern that all journalists must begin to understand at all times.

... 'Komboni Ambassador' sticks to community service, campaigns SUN REPORTER writes @SunZambian

T

HE 2021 General Elections are in sight and with Covid-19 restrictions, the Patriotic Front is using doorto-door campaigns, something tha aspiring candidate for Matero’s Ward 25 Patrick Salubusa is familiar with. He initiated a Know Your Neighbour campaign at the height of the Gassing Attacks to dispel fears and raise community unity. The self titled Komboni Ambassador has proven to be a servant of the people. Often sacrificing his time and reources to come to the aid of his constituents. He has never hidden his aspiration to take up the Parliamentary seat since he begun his political career in 2011. He is Patriotic Front (PF) Matero constituency vice-secretary as well as mobilisation committee secretary and the chairman for the fundraising committee. The immediate past Kapwepwe Ward 25 Councillor, who was more commonly known as a comedian Sauloshi, popularised the komboni (township) jokes. In a 2017 interview he said: “A lot of people have represented Matero constituency as MPs and a lot of them have represented the people of Kapwepwe Ward 25, where I currently reside, as councillors but I can tell you that once I am elected, that is when you will see a

CANADIAN firm, GoviEx Uranium, has executed a drilling contract with Hydro Tech Drilling and Exploration (Z) Limited to undertake exploration in the company’s Mutanga Uranium Project in Zambia. Hydro Tech will also deal with resource delineation drilling programmes focused at the company’s Mutanga Uranium Project in Zambia. Hydro Tech is a Zambian drilling company that specialises in groundwater and exploration drilling and has been operating for seven years. With the reissued Chirundu Mining Permit, GoviEx is keen to get back to advanc-

ing the Zambian assets with the development of Mutanga, says company Chief Executive Officer, Daniel Major. Mr Major said the project benefits from simple and straight forward operations due to low-waste stripping, low acid consumption and potentially one of the lowest capital expenditure requirements of its African peers needed to get into production. “The mine plan currently forecasts an 11-year mine life and the drill targets identified through trenching, in known uranium intersections, indicate potential for resource extension making this a potential long-life project. “Furthermore, considerable metallurgical test work has already been undertaken

to a pre-feasibility study standard, providing considerable confidence on the process route considered,” he said in an update on the project. The Ministry of Mines recently reinstated the licence for GoviEx to mine uranium in Chirundu. The reinstatement of the licence was however subject to completion of certain exploration and development milestones to advance the license towards final feasibility study. GoviEx had pledged to reinvigorate the development of the Mutanga Project in Chirundu, starting with targeted resource exploration drilling later this year. GoviEx has planned a 8,000 metre down-hole percussion drilling program, focussed on the Dibwe

He said not only would the company continue to bring connectivity to Zambia, but would also enable business owners, enterprises, and government entities with managed and cloud services that improve their competitiveness within their sector. “We have come up with tailor-made solutions. Maropolo Tiles declares K72m dividend LUSAKA-BASED firm Marcopolo Tiles has declared its first dividend worth K72 million to its shareholders. Speaking when he received the dividend cheque on behalf of other shareholders, IDC Group Chief Executive Officer Mateyo Kaluba hailed Marcopolo Tiles for delivering a strong performance in the financial year 2020, despite difficult times arising from the COVID-19 pandemic. Mr. Kaluba said he is happy that the company never allowed the COVID -19 pandemic nor the negativity that accompanied their investment to detract them from the

important job of growing the company. The Group CEO disclosed that the Corporation is proud to be part of this strategic investment that has created 700 direct jobs, created a new value chain in the manufacturing sector, and repositioned Zambia from an importer of tiles to a regional exporter. Speaking at the same function, Marcopolo Tiles Acting Chief Executive Officer Mr. Roy Mwamba attributed the successes recorded, to the phased approach that his company has taken to assert itself as a strategic investor in Zambia. Mr. Mwamba explained

that Marcopolo Tiles is currently operating at phase three. Phase four will commence in the second week of August 2021 with the production of sanitary ware which will be the first in Zambia and the region. He further disclosed that his company will start the production of high dimension tiles which are currently only manufactured in Eastern Asia and Europe. In August 2020, the IDC acquired 22.61% shares in Marcopolo Tiles while NAPSA and WCFCB acquired 16.39% and 10% respectively.

PRODUCTION at the Kanseseli gold mine in Mwinilunga has been hampered by the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic which has led to delays in the importation of machinery, the Zambia Consolidated Copper Mine Investment Holdings (ZCCM-IH) has said. ZCCM-IH last month said it was expected to increase production of gold as it continues with exploration works to assess how much gold is available at the mine. The company’s Public Relations Manager, Ms Loisa Mbatha Kakoma said in an interview that production was expected to increase after the installation of the processing machinery. Ms Kakoma however said the installation of the machinery has been delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic which affected the quick arrival of the equipment in the country. “Production was going to increase based on the installation of the bigger processing capacity machinery, we are still working to install the machinery, we have just been delayed by the Covid-19 situation,” she said. She said the installation of the machinery was however expected to be completed this month adding that the exploration works are still ongoing. ZCCM-IH through its Zambia Gold Company oversees the mining, processing, refining, and marketing of gold in Zambia. The company owns 51 percent of shares in the mine while the government through the Ministry of Finance has 49 percent shares.

COVID-19 TRUTHS

It is important for members of the public to act quickly if they suspect they have coronavirus as well as protecting others from possible infection.

W

We need to be mindful of the strain being put on hospitals, health workers once again having to work long hours to save lives. “With the increasing numbers of patients with Covid-19 being admitted to our Hospitals, the demand on bed space, supplies and oxygen continue to increase and all efforts are being made to effectively respond to the evolving situation,” Dr Malama said. “At the rate we are admitting patients, we are likely to reach at least 500 in patients with 350 on oxygen therapy in the coming week a situation likely to put further strain on our resources - we can prevent this scenario by adhering to the prescribed public health and

social measures.” He added that even though about 85% of those with Covid-19 may be asymptomatic, it is difficult to tell who will be part of the symptomatic 15% and worse knowing who will go on to develop severe disease and die. Covid-19 can affect anyone and for that reason we need to be responsible and responsive. We must avoid a situation where restrictions are enforced and in the worse case scenario Zambia is blacklisted as a no go area. As the globe fights to control the coronavirus pandemic, it is important for us to bear in mind possible consequences of the continued spike in numbers.

un A

variants of concern detected in our country namely B.1.1.7, B.1.351, B1.617.2. He said new infections were more contagious and causing more severe disease leading to more admissions to healthfacilities as compared to the 1st and 2nd waves. “Today we call upon our Traditional, Religious, Political, Civic and Cooperate leaders to take pole position in the response to Covid-19. We urge our leaders to raise the voices in solidarity and steer behaviour change and adherence to the public health guidelines,” Dr Malama said. “This is the time we should bind together and fight the common enemy - The Covid-19 Pandemic.”

The Ministry of Health has disclosed that some countries such as Ethiopia have started enforcing the requirement for digitalised SARC COV 2 negative test certificates. Government is engaging the Africa Union through the Africa Centre for Disease Control to be part of the digitalised system It is unfortunate that there are some people who still believe that Covid-19 is a hoax and does not exist and those who continue insinuating that the positive cases being reported may not be the true reflection of what is on the ground. Very soon it will be undeniable that Covid-19 is real, as more people get infected. The best we can do is to simply adhere to the five golden rules that have proven to be effective and a simple way to reduce infections: 1) Masking up correctly and consistently; 2) Maintaining physical distance; 3) Washing your hands frequently with soap and water or using hand sanitizer; 4) Avoiding crowded places if possible, particularly super spreader events, or staying at home; and 5) Seeking medical attention early if you are symptomatic. It requires an individual effort to win the war against Covid-19.

LUSA K

ITH the continued rise in Covid-19 cases and fatalities it is clear that we have to be more truthful with ourselves on how we are managing the pandemic. In his daily briefing, Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary - Technical Services Kennedy Malama stated that many Covid-19 patients were accessing health facilities when their conditions were already bad leading to increased fatality. It is important for members of the public to act quickly if they suspect they have coronavirus as well as protecting others from possible infection. The third wave is here and the best we can do is to be honest and proactive about the situation. “We are aware of the anxiety that has been created by the increasing numbers of Covid-19 cases being seen under the third wave,” Dr Malama said. “We would like to assure you that Government is doing everything possible to save lives, livelihoods, learning institutions and the economy. However, it’s important to remember that we need collective efforts at individual, family, institutional and community level to change the tide of the Covid-19 landscape in our country.” The Health PS stated that it is clear that the escalating Covid-19 are being fuelled by laxity in adherence to public health guidelines, Super spreader events of various forms and the effects of the SARS COV 2

Extra Sports Mbesuma calls for support to grassroot football

In an interview on arrival from South Africa ahead of the tournament to run from June 26 and 27 in Luanshya, Mbesuma said he cannot manage alone to change the lives of talented youths. He said there is need for the corporate world, fellow players and the football association to partner with the Collins Mbesuma Foundation with an aim to give young people the opportunity to develop their talents. He said the Copperbelt Youth Football Tournament would grow into a bigger event with support from the corporate world. “We are just starting and I need support from other people as you know I can’t do it alone so I want this tournament to be held every year but at the same time I need support from other people such as fellow soccer players, those with academies and the Football Association of Zambia because the dream I have is very big, I can’t do it alone,” Mbesuma said. Mbesuma said the Copperbelt Youth Football

Tournament will contribute to the growth of Zambian football at grass roots level. Mbesuma said he was looking forward to giving the talented youths in Luanshya the opportunity to develop their talents. “It is a dream come true to go back where I came from and I’m very happy to start this journey. “I want to give the opportunity to the young ones. I started as a young one playing under 14 until I moved to Roan United and I travelled all over the world and now I want to give back to the youngones not just in Luanshya but across Zambia,” he said. Mbesuma hailed tournament organiser, Charity Muntahali for being professional and making sure that the project makes positive strides. The 2012 AFCON winner will on Thursday launch the tournament which has attracted youths teams from Nkana, Napsa Stars, Zesco United and Ronald Kampamba’s academy Sate Sate Academy.

Zesco United head coach Numba Mumamba has urged his players to take the game like a final. “The team is in good shape and fully focused on the task at hand. This is a very crucial game as it will have an implication on whether we are crowned champions or not,” he said. “We want to conclude our business as soon as possible so that we concentrate on preparations for continental football.” The Ndola side is hoping to have the regular players back in action after the injury marred previous fixtures. The league was on break due to the international window. According to a schedule availed to the ZamFoot Crew, Week 18, 21, 28, and 32 will take centre stage from Saturday 12 June to Thursday 17 June. The 2020 champions Nkana’s race to safety continues on Saturday as they square off with Young Green Eagles.

The relegation threatened team will then make a stopover in Lusaka to face second-placed Sensational Zanaco FC at Sunset Stadium.

In Kabwe a derby will also take centre stage as the Magnificent People’s team, Kabwe Warriors host Prison Leopards at the Godfrey Ucar Chitalu

Stadium. Elsewhere, Relegation-threatened Lumwana Radiants will host Red Arrows at Independence Stadium.

US Women’s Open: Yuka Saso creates history with play-off victory TEENAGER Yuka Saso became the first Filipino player to win a major with victory in the US Women’s Open at The Olympic Club in San Francisco.

Konta beats Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove in Nottingham opener TOP seed and British number one Johanna Konta marked the start of her grass-court campaign with a comfortable 6-1 6-3 win over the Netherlands’ Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove in Nottingham.

Konta’s serve kept the world number 88 on the back foot, the Briton winning 89% of points on her

first serve. After losing the opening game of the match, Konta won the next nine to put herself in control of the contest. “I am hopeful, I am playing with a lot of hope and excitement,” she said. “I think for me, this is the most fun surface we have. It is different and asks different things of your game.”

Konta, who has given a bye through the first round, will play Ukraine’s Kateryna Kozlova in the next round after the Ukrainian upset American 13th seed Madison Brengle. Konta, 30, has won only three of her previous nine matches in 2021 and announced over the weekend that she had split from her coach Dimitri Zavialoff.

She has enjoyed long runs at her last appearances in Nottingham, however, losing in the final of the 2018 event to current world number one Ashleigh Barty after finishing runner-up to Donna Vekic the year before. Konta’s best run at Wimbledon, which begins on 28 June, was reaching the last four in 2017. - BBC

Saso, 19, beat Japan’s Nasa Hataoka on the third hole of a sudden death play-off after they tied on four under par. American Lexi Thompson missed a putt on the 18th to get into the play-off. Saso, who recovered from two double bogeys in her first three holes, said: “My caddie said there are still many holes to go and to trust the process.” At 19 years, 11 months and 17 days, Saso matched South Korea’s Inbee Park to the day as the youngest champion at the women’s game’s oldest major. Saso, who shot a two-over 73 in the final round, had to survive a late charge by Hataoka, 22, who was seeking to become the latest Japanese major champion after Hideki Matsuyama triumphed at the Masters earlier this year. After starting the day six strokes off the lead, Hataoka stormed through with three birdies in her last six holes to post a 68 but could only manage pars on the three play-off holes and was forced to watch on as Saso sank the winning 10-foot birdie putt. Thompson had led by four strokes after her first nine holes but suffered a dramatic collapse on the back nine. The 26-year-old started to struggle with her accuracy off the tee on the back nine and missed a crucial par putt on 17 as well as one on 18 that would have seen her into the playoff. England’s Mel Reid, who led after the first round, carded a second successive 78 to finish in a tie for 46th on 12 over. Saso, who earlier in the tournament revealed she has tried to emulate four-time men’s major champion Rory McIlroy’s swing, admitted she had received encouragement from the Northern Irishman on social media on Sunday. - BBC
