52-year-old Lusaka City Council (LCC) legal assistant who allegedly tempered with the local authority’s critical banking data base has appeared in the Lusaka Magistrate court on two charges.

In the first count, Zulu is charged with unauthorized access to a critical data base, contrary to the Electronic communication and transaction Act number 21 of 2009 of the laws of THE LUSAKA SUN

It is alleged that between June 1, 2016 and January, 30, 2017, Zulu accessed the Lusaka city council banking system, data that is a critical data base.

In count two, Zimba is charged with theft by public servant alleg-

edly committed between June 1, 2016 and January, 30, 2017.

He is alleged to have stolen K1,600 from his employers.

Zimba has denied the charges and the court has since set May 21, this year as date for commencement of trial.

HE election fever is slowly heating up and with it comes the unfortunate twin troubles of political violence and misinformation.

With the emergence of social media - fake news has potential to spread and ignite tempers very quickly.

It is hard to separate fact from fiction and very often the purveyors of lies know full well what anarchy they hope to stir with peddling lies.

For this reason, the criminalisation of such acts through the Cyber Bill is welcome and it is our sincere hope that the mainstream media will be equipped to fight misinformation to ensure informed citizens.

Recently in Chipata, Eastern Province permanent secretary Veronica Mwiche says Government's development efforts are under threat from a growing trend of misinformation.

"Some people and other sources of information that do not mean well for this country generate and publish false information aimed at misleading and in the process impact negatively on the country's development programmes," she said.

Speaking as guest in a speech read on her behalf by assistant secretary Royd Tembo during the MultiStakeholders Orientation and Engagement Meeting on Fighting Misinformation and Promoting Democracy in Zambia held at Crossroads Lodge in Chipata, Ms. Mwiche said wrong Information will affect how people respond to the Covid-19 threat anyhow they can participate in the country's democratic process.

"It is for this reason that Government welcomes the every effort by development partners aimed at curbing the vice of misinformation and its impact on development.

"This meeting has come at the right time when the country is facing various issues that have a bearing

on the development of the country among them the Covid-19 pandemic and the upcoming general elections," she said.

According to ZANIS the meeting was organised by Bloggers of Zambia and Panos Institute Southern Africa aimed at equipping journalists with basic reporting skills and use of social media in a digital age.

Ms. Mwiche said people need to have the right to information to understand the pandemic and make informed decisions.

"People need correct information to effectively participate in the forthcoming tripartite elections and improve the country's democracy," she said.

During the event, Bloggers of Zambia Chief Executive Officer Richard Mulonga said the main objective of the meeting was to sensitive stakeholders on the negatives of misinformation and how it affects journalism as a profession the promotion of democracy in Zambia.

Mr. Mulonga said there is a trend of misinformation especially by online media that is done by people that have not undergone any media training.

He said fighting misinformation is not the duty of the media alone but even other stakeholders like the Church,Non-Governmental Organisations(NGOs).

"Journalism has a profession has been invaded by untrained individuals. Well have equal stakes to the affairs of this country and we should ensure that we protect it by fighting misinformation," he said.

And Chipata Press Club (CPC) chairperson Christopher Miti said advised journalists to conduct an effective fact checking procedure before communicating the information that they communicate the right information to the people.

ZNFU calls for increased maize floor price THE Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU) has called on the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) to offer farmers a better maize price during this year’s marketing season.

ZNFU president, Jervis Zimba said increasing the floor price will enable farmers to get full cost recovery and mark an increase in their profit margins.

Mr. Zimba stated that the K110 maize price for last year was not supporting the farmers to continue with their various agricultural practices.

“Most farmers are at a loss with the price the FRA offered, but luckily there is an alternative market availed by the private sector,” he said.

Mr. Zimba explained that most farmers have continued to rely on the private sector to buy their commodities in order for them to get profits.

He has since urged government to offer farmers an attractive price for their produce in order to empower them to diversify to other crops.

M. Zimba noted that an attractive price will lure farmers to sell to the Agency and the temptation of smuggling would be avoided.-ZANIS

HE Zambia Police Service has instituted investigations in the video that has gone viral depicting people burning political materials for the United Party for National Development (UPND).

Zambia Police Spokesperson, Esther Katongo says initial investigations have revealed that the materials being burnt were grabbed from a female adult who was going to deliver to clients.

Mrs Katongo noted that members of the public will be informed on the outcome of investigations once they are concluded.

She added that every po-

litical party is free to own party political materials for purposes of campaign and should not be harassed by any person or grouping with a contrary view.

Mrs Katongo stated that it is criminal to temper with, alter, damage or deface any campaign material for another political party.

She has warned that those that will be found to have involved themselves in the criminal activity depicted in the video will be dealt with in accordance with the law.

This is according to a press statement issued to ZANIS in Lusaka today.

Ubuntu Court Student gets 4 years for stealing

A 28 years old student of a named institution who went on rampage breaking into people’s houses and shops in an effort to raise school fees will toil for four years in prison after the Choma Magistrates Court convicted him on 3 counts among them burglary and theft.

In these matters Charles Mbewe Daka stood charged with one count of Burglary and Theft and two counts of Breaking into a Building and Committing a Felony contrary to the Laws of Zambia.

Particulars of the offence in count one are that Daka between January 6 and January 7 in Choma stole 1 plasma television set, a mattress, 3 pairs of shoes, assorted clothes among other valuables all valued k 15, 100 the property of Simon Simbeye a Police Officer.

In count two, Daka on March 31 and April 1 broke into a Butchery Shop and stole 1 Fridge valued at K8, 650 the property of Serviness Hampongo.

And in the third count, Daka broke into Barbra’ Sichanza’s Shop on April 16 and 17 and stole assorted groceries valued at K18, 000.

When he was called to take plea by Public Prosecutor Ebby Kahale before Senior Resident Magistrate Peter Mungala, the accused person admitted all the three counts compelling the Court to enter pleas of guilty respectively.

According to the Facts, the accused person was apprehended whilst in possession of some of the loot and he further went on to demonstrate on how he carried out the break in’s.

Magistrate Mungala slapped him with 4 years in count 1 and 3, and 3 years in count 2.

The sentences are all with hard labour and will run concurrently.

A farmer of Namwala district has appeared in the Choma Magistrates Court on allegations that he stole 6 herds of Cattle.

In this matter, Fine Bubala is charged with one count of Stock Theft contrary to section 275 chapter 87 of the Penal Code of the Laws of Zambia.

It is alleged that Bubala stole six herds of cattle valued at K30, 000 the property of Dennis Muwele.

The alleged incident is said to have occurred on March 1, 2021 in Choma district of Southern Province.

When he appeared for plea before Senior Resident Magistrate Peter Mungala, Bubala vehemently denied the charge against him compelling the Court to record a plea of not guilty.

After pleading not guilty the matter was then adjourned to May 8, 2021 for commencement of trial.

Bubala had his police bond extended.

This group is made up of three young men aged between 25 to 30.

The group focusses mainly on music based on education and messages of social change.

Ubuntu Business ZRA cuts off rogue clearing association PETER SICHALI writes @SunZambian THE Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) has revoked recognition of Customs Clearing & Freight Forwarders Agents Association of Zambia (CCFFAAZ) for inciting clearing agents to go on work stoppage and agitating for disruption of border operations.

In a letter addressed to Clearing Agents on behalf of Commissioner, Customs services, Wagner Chilembo said ZRA no longer recognizes CCFFAAZ as one of the associations representing clearing agents.

Mr Chilembo said ZRA has given 30 days to members of the CCFFAAZ to switch to any other Association of their choice and submit proof to ZRA, failure to which their declarant will be blocked.

“In view of the recent happenings in which CCFFAAZ president incited clearing agents to go on work stoppage and agitated the disruption of border operations, you are hereby informed that ZRA no longer recognizes CCFFAAZ as one of the associations representing the agents. You are given 30 days to switch to any other association of your choice and submit proof to ZRA, failure to which your declarant will be blocked,” Mr Chilembo said.

Meanwhile, embattled CCFFAAZ President Bruce Kaemba has said ZRA has no powers not to recognize CCFFAAZ.

INFLATION DROPS A BUUMBA CHIMBULU writes @SunZambian

FALL in prices of some food items has slowed down the rate of the April annual inflation to 22.7 percent.

The country’s trade surplus has however shrunk to K 7.3 billion in March 2021.

Last month’s inflation rate decreased to 22.7 per cent from 22.8 per cent recorded in March this year.

Zambia Statistics Agency interim statistician general Mulenga Musepa made the announcement at the monthly bulletin briefing in Lusaka recently.

Mr Musepa said on average, prices of goods and services increased by 22.7 per cent between April 2020 and April 2021.

He explained that the slowdown in the rate of inflation was mainly attributed to the fall in prices of some food items.

Mr Musepa said the annual inflation for April, 2021 was recorded at 27.2 per cent compared to 27.8 per cent in March 2021, a decrease of 0.6 percentage points.

This was mainly attributed to decreases in prices of food items such as roller mealie meal, maize grain, fish, dried Kapenta and fruits.

He said the annual nonfood inflation rate for April 2021 was recorded at 17.5 per cent from 17.0 per cent in March 2021.

“The was mainly due to price increases in Footwear, Concrete blocks, Iron sheets, Steel door frames and Charcoal,” Mr Musepa said.

He explained that the

disaggregation of the annual inflation rate by province showed that the annual inflation rate for April, 2021 increased for Lusaka and Western provinces.

On the other hand, inflation decreased for Copperbelt, Eastern, Luapula, Northern, North-Western and Southern provinces.

He said the annual inflation rate remained unchanged for the Central province.

Mr Musepa said Northern province had the highest annual inflation rate at 34.9 per cent, followed by Central Province at 28.8 per cent and Southern Province had the lowest at 16.8 percent.

On international trade, Mr Musepa said the country recorded a trade surplus of K7.3 billion in March 2021 compared to a surplus of

K8.1 billion in February 2021.

He said exports mainly comprising domestically produced goods, increased by 10.7 per cent to K18.4 billion in March 2021 from K16.6 billion in February 2021.

“This was mainly on account of a 6.9 and 47.3 per cent increase in export earnings from Intermediate goods and Consumer goods,” Mr Musepa said.

He said the imports increased by 30.7 per cent to K11.2billion in March 2021 from K8.5 billion in February 2021.

Mr Musepa said this was mainly as a result of a 33.7, 28.9 and 37.6 per cent increase in import bills of Capital goods, Consumer goods and intermediate goods respective.

Sustainability in manufacturing is recognised to have substantial financial and environmental benefits for many businesses.

This is according to the Zambia Manufactures Association of Zambia (ZAM) Chief Executive Officer, Florence Muleya.

Ms Muleya said the aim for sustainability in manufacturing was to enable manufacturers to maximise revenues and global leadership, while conserving natural resources and protecting the environment.

She indicated that sustainable manufacturing also enhanced employee, community, and product safety.

“Promoting sustainable industries, and investing in scientific research and innovation, are all important ways to facilitate sustainable development,” Ms Muleya said in an interview.

Notably, she explained, incorporating sustainability strategies at varying levels of the business resulted in benefits such as lower resource and production costs, improved sales and brand recog-

nition, greater access to financing and capital as well as easier employee hiring and retention.

Ms Muleya acknowledged that achieving sustainable development as a nation will required coordinated efforts between various stakeholders.

She said in tandem, ZAM urged all manufacturers to carry out a selfintrospection on ways that they could contribute to sustainable development at individual level, community, national and global level.

ZAM, Ms Muleya said, would do its part by raising awareness on the importance of sustainability in the manufacturing sector.

She indicated that ZAM would showcase how sustainability could be undertaken through events that showed practical ways in which companies were walking the sustainability talk.

Ms Muleya pledge to continue highlighting these efforts in the manufacturing sector as ZAM’s commitment to the global sustainability agenda.

“Since 2019, ZAM has been celebrating member manufacturers that embrace sustainability.

ZAM instigated a recognition system through awards for companies in the manufacturing sector that embrace various efforts towards achieving sustainable development in its many different forms,” she said.

GOVERNMENT has announced that production of gold at Kasenseli gold mine in Mwinilungu is expected to increase next month.

Vice President Inonge Wina told Parliament last week that the production is expected to increase from 12 kilogrammes per month to 40 kilogrammes per month.

Ms. Wina said the increase is due to the reduction of rains and the acquisition of gold mining equipment.

She however told the House that the increase is not as a result of successful exploration by ZCCM-IH as the exploration are ongoing.

She told the House the other reason why the production will increase is because Zambia Gold Limited is installing a new processing plant with higher capacity.

Ms. Wina said the increase in gold production will promote job promotion and help build gold reserves.

The Vice President was responding to Chifubu Member of Parliament Frank Ng’ambi who wanted to know if the increase in gold production will contribute to the economy of the country.

And Ms Wina told the House that some political parties are now specialised in misinforming the nation.

Ms. Wina said some politicians have been accusing the Zambia Police of being surrogates of the Patriotic Front so that when they lose they will have an excuse and someone to blame.

She said the police are there to protect everyone regardless of their political affiliation and that despite being in power, the PF government does not dictate to the police or any law enforcement agency.

Ms. Wina advised all political parties to swallow their pride and make sure they go into elections with a mind that police will protect everyone regardless of their political grouping.

The media also has a noble duty of promoting free expression of divergent and pluralistic ideas and views without any form of discrimination.

AS the rest of the world commemorated World Press Freedom, history was being made as the Head of State joined in the celebration.

Journalism plays a fundamental role in the democratic process as they keep the citizenry informed and communicate emergent issues.

In recent years, journalists have also borne the brunt of an escalation of political violence.

It is therefore heartening to hear more organisations lend a voice tlfor the safety of journalists.

The Human Rights Commission ( HRC) has called for the protection and safety of journalists ahead of the forthcoming August 12, 2021 general elections.

HRC Spokesperson, Mweelwa Muleya said members of the public especially political party cadres should accord the media the due respect as the fourth estate of government after the Executive, Legislature and Judiciary.

Mr Muleya has since called for enhanced protection of all Journalists ahead of the August general elections.

“Like they say, to be a champion you need to beat the best and those are the best teams and to me, it’s okay; it’s the 90 minutes that will tell and we are not very far from being ready (for the Olympics).”

The Copper Queens are currently

in camp as part of preparations for the Olympic Games.

Zambia has so far played Chile whom they beat 2-1 before losing to South Africa 3-1.

A friendly against Kenya was cancelled at the last minute owing to Covid-19 restrictions to international football.

Last year, the Copper Queens made history by qualifying for the Olympic Games for the first time in the country’s history after beating West Africans Cameroon in a two-legged tie.

The game was part of their preparation for the Olympics. They started their preparations in November last year when they beat Chile 2-1 before going on to lose 3-1 to South Africa earlier this month.

The Olympics will officially run between 24 July and 9 August 2021, but sporting action kicks off two days before the opening ceremony with preliminary women’s football matches set to light up the occasion for various sports disciplines.

"Obviously I would way rather not be staying in a hotel," said the former world number one. "It would be a shame but, if that's what we've got to do to keep everyone safe, then that's what we'll do.

"We've been told that the ticketing for Wimbledon is going to be vastly reduced for the players for family. It would be very odd playing at Wimbledon without, not just

being able to see your family, but not having them there to support in the matches as well.

"That's the times we're living in.

Hopefully, if we keep going with the vaccinations, there'll be a possibility for family members and friends that have been vaccinated to come in. If not, that's what it will have to be this year."

Murray has never lost a singles match before the third round at the All England Club, and reached at least the quarter-finals every year between 2008 and his last appearance in 2017.

Last month's Miami Open had been due to be Murray's first tournament following the birth of his fourth child but injury struck again, this time a groin problem.

"That was the thing in December, why I think I got into such a good place was because of the two months of practising basically six days a week every week for a couple of months.
