BABA Mulenga Kabaso, popularly known as ‘Spax’, has asked the Lusaka High Court to secure his release arguing that there is no justifiable reason for the State to keep him in detention without a charge since February 26 this year.

Kabaso, a resident of Chingola on the Copperbelt, says he is a businessman by profession.

According to summons for grant of permission to issue a writ of Habeas Corpus filed in the Lusaka High Court yesterday Kabaso has sued the Attorney General and the Zambia Police Service through his lawyers Freddie and Company of Kitwe and Iven Mulenga and Company of Lusaka.

He says his constitutional rights against unlawful detention have been breached and will continue to be infringed.

He says it is only fair and just that a writ of Habeas Corpus Ad subjiciendum (the right of a citizen to obtain protection against illegal imprisonment) be issued immediately to secure his protection under the law.

Kabaso states he was apprehended on February 26 by police officers in Chingola, who identified themselves as Crime One police officers from Lusaka and was brought to Lusaka on the same day and detained at Chelstone Police Station.

Mulenga says while at Chelstone Police Station, he was kept in a cell throughout and no one was allowed to see him and that he was equally not allowed to talk to his advocates until Saturday, February 29, when he was taken to the Criminal Investigations Officer's (CIO’s) office where a warn and caution statement was administered to him on suspicion of murder of Emmanuel Mapunda

The mayor of Lusaka had been pitted in a group of four for the best and hardworking city mayors in Zambia alongside.

Other contestants were Mayor of Chipata Sinoya Mwale, Mayor of Ndola Amon Chisenga and Mayor of Kitwe Christopher Kang’ombe.

Reacting to a question posted on the Sun official Facebook page ‘who is the best and most hardworking city mayor among Lusaka, Chipata, Ndola and Kitwe? Facebook followers have appreciated Mr Sampa’s humour and dedication towards work, most of them describing him as the most admired mayor in Zambia.

He says he was also advised by police that officers from Crime One were investigating him in relation to a case of murder and use of military combat uniform without authority.

“After the warn and caution was administered, I was not charged with any offence but was transferred from Chelstone Police [Station] to Chilenje Police [Station] before being taken to Ibex Hill Police Station where I have been kept without being charged with any offence,” read the documents.

Kabaso states that police informed him that he could not be released until further notice as they were still carrying out investigations and that they had not yet formulated the charge.

Mulenga believes that the police are vindictive and abusing their powers by declining to release him or charging him or taking him before a competitive court because from the time of his arrest, he has not been charged or taken to court.

"My continued detention without being charged is not only unjustifiable but also unlawful as it is unconstitutional in that my fundamental and connotation guaranteed rights to freedom and liberty are being blatantly violated and unfairly prejudiced," Mulenga says.

He also states that all attempts to have the matter brought to court have been futile as the police' servants and agents insist that he remains in police custody.

Mulenga says he has been reliably advised by his advocates and believes that a person alleged to have committed an offence has a constitutional right to protection of the law in that he is presumed innocent and until brought before a competent court of law and found guilty and if not tried within a reasonable time, then he shall be released either unconditionally or upon reasonable conditions.

He says since his detention and before being brought to court, a number of false statements have been issued in various media which keep tarnishing his good reputation.

"I have been prosecuted through the media, thereby likely to cause people to have falsified view of my detention and I crave this honourable court's indulgence in granting me leave to issue a writ of heabes corpus ad subjiciendum as my continued stay in police cells not only infringes my constitutional rights but also affects the lives of many thousands of workers who solely depend on me on a daily basis for their livelihood.

“The granting of leave herein will serve the interest of the course of justice as I am currently detained beyond the time limits provided by law and there is no legal basis upon which I am still being kept in custody," argues Mulenga.

Maid in court over K51, 000 theft CHARLES MUSONDA WRITES @SunZambian A LUSAKA maid has pleaded not guilty to one count of theft by servant involving K51, 700 cash.

Before Lusaka Magistrate Judith Chiyayika yesterday was Josephine Natasha Katangi who is accused of stealing the money belonging to Judith Chongo on February 9, 2020 just a month after she employed her as maid.

Testifying in the case yesterday, Ms. Chongo said she runs a boarding house in City Airport compound opposite University of Lusaka (UNILUS) and after she collected rentals from students she counted the money and separated K50, 000 to take to the bank, K3, 000 for water bill, and K1, 700 for chilimba village banking and put the whole amount in a plastic.

She said she used to share the same bedroom with the accused person as she is asthmatic and needs someone by the side to help her whenever she was under attack.

Ms. Chongo said two days before she counted the money; Katangi went out to her boyfriend on Friday evening and came back on Saturday around 01:00 am. She said on Saturday evening she went out again and came back on Sunday morning after which she went to church and knocked around 14:00 hours.

She said on Sunday evening she counted the money in the presence of Katangi who even saw where she put the money in the handbag.

“On Monday morning I prepared to go to the bank and I waited for the men who drive and help me. After coming from the bathroom I went to check on the bed and found that everything was intact but money was missing from the plastic in the handbag. Only K3, 000 remained.

“Natasha told me that she found the main gate where vehicles pass open and the sitting room door open. I wondered how someone would open the main gate from outside because there is electric wire fence on top. I found the gate slightly open and Natasha is the one who used to keep the key,” Ms. Chongo said.

She wondered how the glass sitting room door could not be broken if someone opened it by force.

She further testified that she reported the matter to UNILUS management who later reported it to police. She said later police officers picked up Katangi and the three men who were supposed to escort her to the bank.

Ms. Chongo told the court that the three men were later released on grounds that they were innocent while Katangi was detained on allegation of knowing something on the theft.

She said after the theft Katangi’s boyfriend, who used to work nearby, fled to Chinsali and that one of the two handbags she came with disappeared from the house. She said before that Katangi had asked her for a loan which she wanted to use on building a house in Mumbwa.

Trial continues on March 31, 2020 and Katangi is remanded in custody.

YOUNG female farmer of Kabwe district in Central Province has urged women to take up farming as a source of income and contribute to the economic growth of the country.

Faustina Manzimunyama, 29, of Mpima Dairy has ventured into farming as empowerment since 2018 and has succeeded thanks to her hard work and focus.

Mrs Manzimunyama, married with three children, says it does not take a learned person to be a successful farmer because she is not educated herself.

Speaking in an interview with the media after winning an achievement award during International Women’s Day celebrations in Kabwe, Mrs Manzimunyama said being a farmer had helped her to contribute to

the income of her family and ultimately the economic growth of the country.

“I am encouraging my fellow women to take part in farming, whether one is educated or not.

I am not educated myself, but have succeeded in farming,” she said.

The young female farmer who started farming in 2018 on a rented piece of land said she expected a bumper harvest from maize and sweet potatoes from the 2019/2020 farming season.

Mrs. Manzimunyama, who last year won K150,000 and a sponsored trip to France funded

by Total Limited is now a proud owner of five hectors of land in the Mpima Dairy Farming Area.

She commended the government for recognising her efforts in farming by awarding her with a bag of urea and D-compound fertiliser under the office of the district commissioner during the International Women’s Day celebrations.

This was after learning of the huge award she won last year from Total Limited Companies.

The only award winner of the day further thanked her husband for his unwavering support, although he was not fully involved in farming.

UNITED party for National development Ng’ombe Ilede Ward Councillor Sharon Palicha has encouraged women in the district to be courageous and join politics.

This was during the commemoration of this year’s International Women’s Day. Women should contest elections on any party ticket for positions of their choice because they can also represent others well in the decision-making processes of the nation.

Mrs Palicha has advised women not to feel intimidated by men in political circles.

And Patriotic Front chairlady Alice Mulwanda expressed happiness that many women turned up in numbers and celebrated the international women's day.

She said the day should not be politicised but unify women and help them protect their rights as they are the backbone of the nation.

Women must respect each other regardless of their political affiliations and status in society

but should uphold morals.

Ms Beatrice Phiri, a marriage counsellor advised women to empower themselves and help their husbands to provide for their families.

Ms Phiri said women empowerment should not be used as a tool to fight their husbands regardless of their statuses and level in institutions but should always be submissive and show respect in society.

Chirundu district health office environmental technologist Godwin Munsanje took advantage of the gathering and sensitised the public on the novel Coronavirus urging them to continue upholding hygiene.

Mr Munsanje said people should avoid being in crowded places, cover their mouths when coughing and quickly seek medical attention whenever they felt like they had a fever.

He warned cross-border traders to adhere to the health measures put in place at the borders to avoid any possible outbreak of the deadly virus.

However, Mr Munsanje assured the district that everything had been put in place to

prevent an outbreak.

Chirundu Town Council secretary John Mwanza said the International Women’s Day was an occasion to reflect on progress made, to call for change and celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who had played extraordinary roles in the history of their countries and communities.

Mr Mwanza said in line with the theme ‘I am for Generation Equality: Realising Women's Right s’ men should support women to enjoy their rights.

Women should stop pulling each other down but be proud when another woman was leading an institution or political party.

In a speech read on his behalf by council treasurer Emma Mumba, Mr Mwanza advised women to improve their lives and not to wait for the men to do everything for them.

District Commissioner Stafford Kayame said the government under the leadership of President Edgar Lungu was implementing many programmes which benefitted vulnerable

women and girls in Chirundu district.

In speech read on his behalf by district administration officer O'Neill Chiiya Mr Kayame said some of the programmes included social and emergency cash transfers, Food Security Packs, Farmers Input Support Programme and commends the government for opening more secondary schools in the district, which had risen from three in 2012 to eight.

The programmes were benefiting the girl-child.

Mr Kayame assured the women that the water challenges being experienced in the district would soon be rectified.

Meanwhile, despite the United Party for National Development (UPND) encouraging its party members to attend the celebrationS in Chirundu only Chirundu central Ward Councilor Chrispin Malesu and Ng’ombe Illede Ward Councilor Sharon Palicha attended the commemoration that was characterised by dances, songs, sketches and poems.

The event was held at Kaimona Bus Station.

Mr Namachila ZAMBIA National Service (ZNS) officer based at Kalindi check point in Mushindamo district in North-western Province has committed suicide by hanging himself.

The officer, identified as Kalima Musukuma, 43, hanged himself from an avocado tree using a wire after trying to shoot his workmates with an AK47 assault rifle.

North-Western Province Commissioner of Police Hudson Namachila said yesterday Mr Musukuma, a staff sergeant of Kamitonte ZNS Base who was on patrol in Kalindi area, differed with some of his workmates.

Mr Namachila said during the altercation Mr Musukuma pulled out an AK47 rifle and tried to shoot the otherofficers, but they managed to disarm him before he could pull the trigger.

Mr Namachila said after being disarmed, Mr Musukuma is reported to have gone to bed but was later discovered dead in the morning yesterday around 06:00 hours.

He said police officers visited the scene and found the body hanging with no visible injuries.

Mr Namachila said Mr Musukuma’s body was in Solwezi General Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem.

Nip gun culture in bud

GOVERNMENT should use an iron fist to nip the gangster gun culture that seems to be taking root in Zambia, especially on the Copperbelt and Lusaka.

It is dangerous to allow gangsters to be owning guns, including high calibre automatic and semiautomatic rifles, and showing them off in public like toys.

What is coming out from the Copperbelt is that these gangs have acquired these firearms mainly to defend themselves from or attack rival gangs. They are arming themselves in order to attack rival gangs as they fight for control of turf.

There is a need to revisit the law under which criminals are owning licensed guns and ammunition.

What is scary is the flaunting of these guns on social media.

How are police issuing fire arms licences to these elements, whose reputation they are fully aware of?

Recently, Zambians were treated to shocking videos and still pictures of gangsters clad in military type fatigues showing off military type guns and playfully firing live rounds as hordes of adoring youths watched.

What example are these gun totters setting to those young people who look to them as role models? Aren’t they making it attractive for those youths to acquire and use guns on their rivals?

We should not allow this trend to take root in our country because it is a threat to national peace and security.

That is why there is a need for tough language accompanied by tough action from law enforcement wings of the government.

Police should use appropriate laws to seize the guns that are in the hands of gangsters because they pose a serious threat to human life.

A gun is not a toy and it should not be owned by any person as long as they can afford it. It is a lethal weapon designed to kill.

The warning by the Inspector General of Police, Mr Kakoma Kanganja, to Jerabos on the Copperbelt that police will deal with them ruthlessly should they stage an illegal demonstration over the detention of their godfather Ka-

baso Spax Mulenga over a criminal offence is timely.

Three years ago the Copperbelt and Lusaka were rocked by a wave of crime perpetrated by criminal gangs consisting of mainly teens and youths in their early and mid20s.

The young criminals held almost the entire province hostage attacking residents in mining towns even in broad daylight. We shudder to imagine what would happen if their heroes and idols, the older criminals whom they regard as their role models, helped them to acquire guns.

They would be raiding business places and homes with impunity.

Many lives would be lost.

We urge Government to use the services of intelligence units of security wings to sniff out the gangsters with guns and disarm them. If no tough and drastic action is taken the gangs, especially on the Copperbelt, will transform into militias and destabilise the province, and the country.

We are also aware that some political party cadres on both sides of our country’s political divide are in possession of fire arms. The guns have been liberally flaunted and fired during campaigns and aftermaths of general and by-elections.

Memories of what happened at the peak of campaigns for a by-election in Kaoma district in

Western Province, where a cadre was shot dead, are still fresh. There have been other nasty incidents involving guns.

Some cadres believe that their political affiliation entitles them to owning fire arms and committing crime. We are happy that President Edgar Lungu warned last Friday that those engaged in crime should not expect to be shielded simply because they are members of or are allied to a political party.

The President made it clear that there will be no sacred cows, much as there will be no sacrificial lambs in the hunt for the criminals who spread terror across the country recently.

Minister of Home Affairs Stephen Kampyongo reinforced this warning at the weekend when he addressed the media.

Mr Kampyongo made it clear that belonging to a political party was not a licence to committing crime.

Let the police bring this gun culture that is threatening to take root in our country to an end before it spins out of control.

Tell us about yourself MY NAMES are Matthew Ngosa. I am a family man married to Tasila Ngoma with two children, both girls, Tokozile and Temwani Ngosa.

I am Madido Ward 19 Councilor in Chongwe Constituency under the ruling Patriotic Front (PF).

I was elected in the 2016 general elections.

Since then I have been busy working with the community and getting to know my new role.

What inspired you to go into politics?

I think I would say it’s something I really had so much interest in. Wanting to know current affairs, knowing what challenges people were facing.

Previously, I used to live in Garden and I used to see some challenges that people were facing. So, when I moved to Madido I realised that the people of the area were lacking representation at local government level.

Because of the love of politics from childhood I knew that I could make a difference because politics is for a person with a heart for the people.

How do you manage to juggle between politics and music?

Being a councillor is a part-time job. It’s not like being a member of Parliament where it’s a full-time job. So, I manage to do other things because as a councillor I can even respond to issues on the phone.

And being a musician gave me more advantage to win the elections. If it had not been for music, I think I wouldn’t have won because my music career made me sellable.

Music has to do with people. When we produce music we speak to the people. It involves a lot of touching base with fans.

Same applies with being a politician.

But in the political arena you have to be humble. There is nothing like being a celebrity.

What are some of the achievements you have scored in your ward?

My ward is quite young. It’s a ward that was perceived to belong to Munali and Ngwerere.

In 2016 ECZ [Electoral Commission of Zambia] thought it was imperative to create a new ward.

sub-divided. This started small but grew whereby we have thousands of people and the council were not involved in planning.

People were misplaced, they had no representation. So when we came into office, we faced a lot of challenges because it had no representation.

So when we got into office we had no idea where to put roads and other amenities.

So coming into office in a new ward was quiet challenging in terms development because it was a new ward which is the last one because we have 19 wards.

In 2005 the party in power, which was MMD, empowered the youths with the land. So most of area was completely

But now I can proudly say that we have started having roads in some areas.

Most of the areas have gotten their share of the Road Development Agency road projects.

After the announcement by his Excellency President Edgar Lungu that people should be given title deeds, we have started empowering the people with title deeds, and for the first time people in the area will have land titles after staying for more than 15 years without titles. All this made possible with my hard working Member of Parliament Japhen Mwakalombe.

What are some of the challenges you are facing in your ward?

It’s an area which had no ward before we have challenges with finding a place where to put up social amenities, meaning that we had to start from the scratch.

Water reticulation is a major challenge in the area; people depend on boreholes

What are some of your development plans for your ward?

After the completion of roads, we intend

to start the construction of a police post and a clinic in the ward.

As I said earlier, we have challenges with water reticulation. We are trying to push if Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company can connect us with treated water because as it stands now, people depend on shallow wells making it a danger because they can contract water borne diseases.

What are your political aspirations?

At the moment I am very much comfortable where I am. It’s like going to school; you have to start from Grade Seven.

I need to learn from the people who are already ahead of me, people like His Excellency, President Edgar Lungu, the area MP, the ministers and secretary general of the PF [Patriotic Front] in order to be a good leader people would be proud of.

But I know God has a lot for me. I therefore don’t want to rush things.

Ubuntu Business European shares steady after market slump

STOCK markets in Europe have opened slightly higher following Monday's plunge, when shares saw the biggest falls since the 2008 financial crisis.

London's FTSE 100 share index opened up 1% after having sunk 7.7% in the previous session.

Markets were battered on Monday in reaction to the threat of an oil price war between Russia and Saudi Arabia.

But after falling as much as 30% on Monday, oil prices also saw some recovery, with Brent crude rising 5%.

In Asia, shares in Japan rose after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said his government would work closely with the central bank to boost the economy.

“Markets are making nervous movements amid uncertainty over the global economic outlook,” said Mr Abe. His comments put pressure on the Bank of Japan to act on a pledge it made last week to support markets.

Japan’s benchmark index, the Nikkei 225, had started Tuesday more than 3% down but bounced back following Mr Abe’s comments to stand 1% higher.-BBC

ENIX Zambia a pay-as-you-go solar home system company has deployed over US$25 million solar leases within a period of 18 months across Zambia.

The company marketing manager Cassandra Mhone in an interview in Lusaka recently said within a period of 18 months Fenix had deployed US$25 million solar leases and 25 million mobile money payments had being made to date.

“The impact on our customers and their communities is transformational, household income is boosted, families are safe from dangerous and polluting kerosene, children can complete homework after darkness falls,” she said.

Ms Mhone said the company was providing energy to over 650,000 people in offgrid Zambian households.

She said this was been achieved through the col-

LONDON - Oil prices jumped by around 4% on Tuesday after the biggest oneday rout in nearly 30 years, as investors eyed the possibility of economic stimulus, although a looming price war weighed on sentiment.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday said he will be taking “major” steps to gird the U.S. economy against the impact of the spreading coronavirus outbreak, while Japan’s government plans to spend more than $4 billion in a second package of steps to cope with the virus.

Brent crude futures were up $1.44, or around 4%, to $35.80 a barrel by 0903 GMT, after hitting a session high of $37.38 a barrel.

West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude gained $1.52, or around 5%, to $32.65 a barrel, after hitting a high of $33.73.

“It is also another form of employment, because the mine cannot employ everyone. But we can find these businesses that can offset and create employment,” Ms Chama said in a statement.

She said among the many programmes done at the Trident Foundation, was Local Business Development, whereby it identified viable people among the resettled and others to benefit from business opportunities in their communities.

FQM, she explained created businesses that could tap into the mine opportunities which were available.

Ms Musonda said the

mining firm was actively working towards sustainable, transparent, and responsible economic and social development, by positively contributing to supply chain development.

One beneficiary of FQM’s local Business Development Programme is 23-year-old Agness Nkandu from Kalumbila Northern Resettlement Area, who started her hair salon in a makeshift shelter made from plastic and wood.

She now owns a salon equipped with dryers, blowers, hair toner and a generator, after obtaining an interest-free loan of K20,000 from the foundation.

“I heard about the micro loan from one of my clients who told me about the work the Foundation was doing in helping small businesses such as mine to grow.

“After visiting the Trident Foundation, I attended local business training lessons, then later I applied for a loan from the foundation to invest into my business. And after the loan was approved, they helped to buy two dryers, a blower, a hair toner and a generator,” Ms Nkandu explained.

HE Choma Magistrates Court has sentenced a 25-years-old man to 36 months imprisonment for stealing 4 goats valued at over K1,000 from his uncle who has looked after him for over 10 years.

In sentencing Masautso Mate, Resident Magistrate Seliya Kanunka stated that she would be failing in her duties to deter would be offenders if she left him unpunished.

The Court established that there was no reason why the Uncle would falsely accuse his own nephew of stealing from him.

Particulars of the offence are that Mate, on 31st December 2019 in Choma stole

After finding him guilty of the subject offence, Magistrate Kanunka sentenced him to 3 years imprisonment with hard labour with effect from date of arrest.

Incestuous farmer needs mental check-up

3 years for fake K1,100 mobile money deposit MULENGA MUSONDA writes @SunZambian A 30-YEAR-OLD man has been slapped with 36 months jail term for attempting to deposit K1,100 of fake notes at a Mobile Money Booth.

This is in a matter in which Kizito Mudenda was charged with being in possession of counterfeit notes contrary to the Laws of Zambia.

It was alleged that Mudenda on the 23 January 2020 in Choma without lawful authority or excuse was found with 11 by 100 Kwacha Counterfeit notes.

According to evidence on record,Mudenda was apprehended when he attempted to deposit the K1,100 fake money at an Airtel booth manned by Mwizya Purity at Choma's Makalanguzu.

The alert teller alarmed other people at the market, and luckily an

off duty police officer calmed the situation after noticing a heated argument and took the suspect to the police station.

When he appeared for judgement before Resident Magistrate Seliya Kanunka yesterday morning, the Court found him guilty after establishing that he just wanted to use illegal means to deposit the fake money and later withdraw genuine cash at a different booth.

Despite stating that he looks after an extended family of over 8 people, Magistrate Kanunka said she would be failing in her duties to deter would be offenders if she let him go unpunished.

She thus sentenced him to 3 years imprisonment with hard labour with effect from date of sentencing.

Mudenda was reminded of his right to appeal within 14 days to the High Court.

MULENGA MUSONDA writes @SunZambian THE Choma Magistrates Court has ordered for a mental examination of a 43-year-old Peasant Farmer who is accused of having sexual intercourse with his biological sister.

This is in a matter in which Dyson Muleya is charged with incest contrary to section 159 of the Penal Code of Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

It is alleged that Muleya of Gamela Village in Chief Chooma's Chiefdom in Choma on 26th June 2015 had unlawful carnal knowledge of a female knowing her to be his biological sister.

Court: Do you understand the charge read against you?

Muleya: Yes I understand When he appeared for plea before Court, Magistrate Seliya Kanunka said the High Court had raised issues regarding Muleya's mental capacity to take plea.

Magistrate Kanunka then told the accused person after he admitted to understanding the charge that he could not take plea not until the Mental Health Facility makes a determination as to whether he can undergo trial.

The matter was later adjourned to another date for trial, this will be after the Hospital establishes its findings on his mental capacity.

Ccontinued from yesterday CLUB CAREER Having departed for Kabwe Warriors, Mwanza had his most successful club career at the Railway Ground (Godfrey Chitalu Stadium.

Having assumed the firstchoice goalkeeper responsibility, Mwanza won a number of honours with the Kabwe side with the biggest of these being the 1987 Premier League title under the tutelage of Chitalu (Godfrey).

Warriors narrowly beat Power Dynamos to the title by a single point (34-33) that term, the very first and last time the men in blue and white would ever conquer the top-flight in its present-day format.

Sadly, in sharp contrast, Mwanza’s former team Vitafoam were relegated to the First Division that year for finishing second from the bottom alongside tail-enders and town-mates Zesco United.

Elsewhere, Mwanza was a vital cog of the Warriors’ teams that won the 1988 and 1992 Charity Shields.

In the former year, Mwanza’ Warriors beat Mutondo Stars 2-1 at Independence Stadium through Timothy Mwitwa and Christopher Kunda’s goals.

In the latter final, a stupendousperforming Mwanza was a huge help in sending Warriors victorious through a 3-0 score-line in a match played at Lusaka’s Woodlands Stadium with three different players scorers in Maybin M’gaiwa and the duo of fellow Gabon plane crash victims Mwitwa and Whiteson Changwe.

Of pregnant interest is the fact that, in the 1992 Charity Shield final officiated by FIFA referee Willie Chikuka, of the starting 22 players on the pitch, 11 formed part of the 18 players and a coach who perished in the Gabon Air Disaster to bring the total tally to 12.

He was in goal when Warriors decimated Red Arrows 6-1 at Independence Stadium in 1989 with hat-trick hero Mwitwa, brace-scorer Jolly Chambisha and Joseph Chilekwa being the other scorers on the big day for the former Vitafoam United goalie.

Joseph Musonda provided Arrows’ consolation goal.

While Mwanza & Co. collected a cheque to worth K120, 000 as champions, beaten-finalists Arrows received half that amount – K60, 000.

In the 1991 BP Challenge Cup final. Again, staged at Independence Stadium, Mwanza got a winners’ medal as his team literally murdered Konkola Blades 7-0. Leading the scorers was the unstoppable Mwitwa who hammered in a super hat-trick of four goals while Tenant Chilumba delivered a brace with M’gaiwa scoring the other.

He, while playing for the fivetime top-flight champions, also

scooped two Mosi Cups in 1984 and 1987, the latter title which arguably defined his most glorious performance at club level.

After helping Warriors overcome a determined Nkana 3-1 in the semi-final between the posts, with Maxon Mugala netting a brace and the amazing, ever-green Mwitwa registering his name once, Mwanza was the difference between victory and defeat for his team in the final against Power Dynamos at Independence Stadium.

It came as no surprise therefore that Mwanza was voted Man-ofthe-match in the grand-finale as Warriors’ beat Dynamos 3-2.

Mwanza’s success streak with Warriors also saw him win the Champion of Champions trophy thrice in 1987, 1989 and 1991.

To cap it all, Mwanza also

collected a 1992 Heroes and Unity Cup winners’ medal to rank among the most successful goalkeepers in Zambian football alongside Nkana’s Stephen Mwansa and fellow Gabon plane crash victim Efford David Chabala.

INTERNATIONAL CAREER Though Mwanza was, for the most part of his Zambia career second-choice goalkeeper to Efford Chabala between 1987 and 1993, he was as reliable when called to stand between the posts for country.

He was part of the 1992 African Cup of Nations (AfCON) squad that got ejected in the quarterfinals, losing 1-0 to Cote d’Ivoire on January 20 in the Senegal-held tournament.

STYLE OF PLAY

Unlike other goalkeepers who have courted showmanship between the posts playing for Zambia – the likes of Roan United’s Vincent Chileshe (the first goalkeeper to win the coveted national Footballer-ofthe-Year award in 1977), Green Buffaloes’ and Power Dynamos’ Kenny Mwape, Red Arrows’ Johnston Katowando, not to mention David Efford Chabala (the first goalkeeper to win the national Sportsman-of-the-Year honour in 1984), not to mention Kennedy Mweene of the 2012 African Cup of Nations (CAF) winning squad.

Mwanza was also part of the Zambia team that reaped bronze at the November 1992-held CECAFA tournament. Zambia thrashed Malawi 4-0 in the third play-off in a match played in a town bearing the same name as his surname – Mwanza.

A year earlier, he was in the victorious Zambia team at the Uganda-staged tournament when his side beat Kenya 2-0 in the final in Kampala on December 7, 1991.

The Mufulira Wanderers’ duo of Philemon Kaunda and Francis “Diego” Chisenga scored a goal each.

The bulky Mwanza was as well an integral part of the 1988 Zambian squad to the Seoul Olympic Games in South Korea at which gathering his team went out in the quarter-finals. But most memorably, the Warriors’ goalkeeper and his colleague, be it as it may that he was on the bench, was the 4-0 thrashing of Italy in the group stage. Victory was celebrated by both the players who were in the starting line-up as well as those who were on the substitutes’ bench for the whole duration of the match.

LEGACY Winning his first major domestic trophy aged 22 with Vitafoam United, going on to collect multiple honours with Kabwe Warriors and being a dependable shot-stopper, giving his all at every turn, gives Richard Mwanza a very special place at both club and national level.

PERSONAL LIFE Richard Mwanza was married at the time of his death in the Gabon Air Disaster in April 1993.

And ABSA Bank also announced during the draw, that the budget for this year's cup competition was pegged K3.8 million.

ABSA Zambia managing Director Mizinga Melu said that the winners of this year’s competition would pocket K600,000 from the initial K500,000 won by Cup defending champions Zesco United last year.

Melu said that the runners up would pocket K250,000 just like last year, while Coach of the Tournament gets K20,000, with Man of the Tournament pocketing K20,000 and Best Player of each match getting K10,000.

This will be the first time Nkana and United are meeting in a competitive

match, having last met in the 2018 Zambian Super League in which the latter was demoted to the lower league at the end of the season.

The tie is expected to light up the cup competition as bragging rights are at stake as to who is the top team in the mining township as the derby will be played away from their bases.

Choma’s Green Eagles tie against their feeder side in Young Eagles of Kafue could bring nostalgia of the 2018 edition of the Tournament that saw Green Buffaloes and its feeder side Young Buffaloes locking horns with the latter reining supreme.

This year's ABSA tournament will see Super Division and National Division One teams participate in the eight team tournament.

"NOCZ recognizes this fact and through its strategic plan (2018 -2021) objectives aims to support its members, the sports associations by enhancing their capacities in areas of proper planning, management and governance," he said.

He further said that as such, the need for sports associations to employ various strategies to enable them to anticipate and respond to the changing dynamic environment in which they operate cannot be over emphasised.

According to the NOCZ, the strategic planning workshop which runs from March 10 - 13 was being facilitated by National Course Director Mayamba Sitali.

La Liga announced its ruling will affect the next two rounds of fixtures while the French league said fans will be banned until 15 April.

La Liga said it acted on guidance from Spain's ministry of health.

The French government announced on Sunday a ban on all gatherings of more than 1,000 people.

Barcelona's Champions League match against Napoli on 18 March will also be played at an empty Nou Camp.

"The decision has been made strictly for health reasons," said Joan Guix, Catalunya government's health chief.
