‘DESPERATE’ NURSE DUMPED …for concocting assault story after being rejected MULENGA MUSONDA writes @SunZambian A Choma Based Nurse who took her Boyfriend to Court on accusations that he assaulted her following his refusal to marry her has terribly lost the case.

In this matter Mainza Kaumba a Clinical Officer of Pemba district was dragged to the Choma Fast Track Court for Gender Based Violence on allegations of Assaulting Kezia Hankanga a Nurse at Choma Railways Surgery.

Allegations were that Kaumba Assaulted Hankanga on February 13, 2020 in Choma and occasioned her actual bodily harm.

According to facts on record, Hankanga was allegedly assaulted by Kaumba when she took a letter to him from her brother summoning him to discuss their elopement.

Hankanga told the Court that on the fateful night she took the letter to him, he clobbered her and stated that he was not ready to marry her. She said she had fits 5 times following the beatings that night as she is epileptic.

In defense Kaumba argued the fact that he assaulted her, he told the Court that she concocted the story of Assault because he ended the relationship which she dearly wanted to result in a marriage.

FILE PHOTO But when the matter came up for judgment before Court, Resident Magistrate Ethel Phiri acquitted the accused person after establishing that the complainant was untruthful in her testimony.

The Court found it puzzling that someone who was assaulted could take 10 days

to go to the Hospital.

She acquitted Kaumba forthwith and ordered that he be repaid the K2,000 that he had paid her for the sake of peace among the two families to prevail at that time.

This was in a matter in which Onnabel Siachipya dragged her 27 years old husband Benson Mudenda to Court seeking legal

divorce because he kept on causing confusion in their matrimonial home.

Siachipya testified that the two got married in 2013 and in 2015 he left for his brother house to seek traditional healing after he fell sick.

She said whilst there, he engaged a herdsman to be tending Cows that he had left behind.

"When he returned, he started

accusing me of sleeping with the man that was looking after our animals.

"And when I fell pregnant he insisted that I terminate the pregnancy as he didn't want to have a child with me," she testified.

She said early 2020 he gave her K200 to vacate his house. He later tried to take her in but when she refused he threatened to kill her.

But in defense, Mudenda who

strongly refused to be divorced stated that she just ran away from home for no apparent reason.

Despite pleading for forgiveness and telling her that he still loved his wife, Siachipya declined to take him back.

The Court thus dissolved the marriage and shared the property equitably.

Ubuntu News Kasama, Mbala in water boost STEPHEN MWEWA writes @SunZambian A South African Company has delivered water supply pipes for water tap connections in Kasama’s Musenga Township and Chilongoma Township in Mbala district respectively under phase one of the project.

Chambeshi Water Supply and Sanitation Company Managing Director, Luckson Simumba, said the material arrived in Kasama on Monday this week.

Mr Simumba explained that the project was supposed to start in March this year but was halted due to the outbreak of Covid-19 He said the supplier had failed to transport the water supply pipes on time following the lockdown which some countries imposed.

Chambeshi Water Supply and Sanitation Company in partnership with Zambia World Vision has come up with a K27 billion improved access to safe and clean water supply and sanitation project.

The project is aimed at improving water supply to 150,000 people in both Kasama and Mbala districts.

Mr Simumba said areas that would benefit from the project include Kasama’s Ntema, LuaLuo and Kasama villages, while in Mbala district Nyambulu, ZESCO Compound and Maroundi areas would benefit.

The project will also include the construction of 10 water borne toilets for identified vulnerable people in the villages and townships that had been earmarked.

ALULUSHI Member of Parliament (MP), Kampamba Chewe, has donated K 100,000 as revolving fund for traders Luano market in her constituency.

Ms Chewe, who visited Luato market which is the biggest trading centre in Kalulushi, said that government was trying to change the lives of the people for the better.

She is also Community Development and Social Services Minister.

The MP said that the fund would

boost the marketeers’ businesses under the supervision of the National Traders and Marketeers Association of Zambia (NATMAZ).

"Some few weeks ago, I had meetings with NATMAZ to address the main challenges Kalulushi marketeers are facing and among many issues discussed, low level of capital was identified as the biggest constraint," he said.

Ms Chewe took time to inspect the ongoing works of a new shelter under construction at luato market funded by the Chambeshi Copper Smelter (CCS) as part of corporate social responsibility.

She said that her office would continue lobbying for more of such empowerment initiatives from wellwishers and cooperating partners.

She said that the rest of Luano market would be extended once construction of the first shelter was completed.

Ms Chewe said that Government aimed at seeing everyone conducting business in a conducive and safe environment.

Nsama DC wants electricity STEPHEN MWEWA writes @SunZambian A senior government official in Nsama district is appealing to the government to electrify the district.

District Commissioner Peter Mwando has bemoaned that, despite having newly built- up infrastructures in the district, lack of electricity is a source of worry among people of Nsama.

Ubuntu Court Dangerous driver jailed PETER MALASHA writes @sunzambian Road Transport and Safety Agency RTSA has hailed Ndola High Court for convicting and sentencing a truck driver to two years imprisonment for causing the death of 12 people.

The court has also suspended the driving Licence for Mr. Sailus Munenga for 36 months.

In March this year, Mr. Munenga while driving a Volvo truck along the Ndola-Kabwe road caused the death of 12 people in a Rosa Bus when failed to keep to his lane and collided head-on with the Bus. RTSA was hopeful that the action taken by the court will act as a deterrent measure to other motorists especially Public Service vehicle PSV drivers who were placed with high responsibility of safeguarding the safety of the traveling public.

And last week, RTSA revoked driving licences for six PSV drivers for disregarding traffic rules and regulations with impunity.

"All PSV drivers and motorists in general are implored to follow traffic regulations to put an end to the recent spike in road traffic accidents," he said.

This is contained in the press statement issued by RTSA head of public relations Fredrick Mubanga.

Lusaka woman has narrated in the magistrates court how her friend set fire to a curtain in a house destroying K175,156 property.

This was in matter Before magistrate Felix Kaoma were Miriam Phiri 20 of Chainda Avondale set fire to the house destroying K175,156 worth of property of Gertrude Sichone.

Rhoda Mwale 19 of Chainda said Phiri is her friend and has known her for a year.

She said on January 29, Phiri went to visit her around 10:00 hours and while they were chatting a woman came saying her husband was with another woman.

She said they rushed to the bar where he was and found Phiri's husband with another woman.

Mwale said Phiri slapped the woman and onlookers came to separate them.

She said Phiri and her hus-

band started and she asked Phiri to return home and wait for him.

Mwale said around 18 hours, Phiri went to her house and complained that her husband had not returned home.

She said Phiri asked her to escort her to the bar where they had found her husband earlier.

They didn’t found him and Phiri suggested that they go to his girlfriend’s house to check if he was there.

She said when they arrived at the woman’s house, Phiri knocked but there was no answer.

Later, she said, Phiri went to check at the back of the house and came back in a hurry.

She said Phiri told her that they must leave immediately.

She said when they reached a bit far away from the house, Phiri told her that she lit a curtain in the

house.

She said she asked Phiri if the fire curtain would not cause fire to the whole house and she said no.

She said Phiri showed her the smoke coming from the house and they decided to check another house for her husband.

They later found Phiri sleeping at the friend’s house and an argument between the two started.

She said she heard the siren of the fire brigade vehicle and told Phiri’s that it could be the house where she set a curtain on fire.

Mwale said Phiri responded saying maybe it was somewhere else.

She said a few minutes later she heard people shouting that a house was burning.

She said the told Phiri’s husband that his wife had set fire on a curtain in the house where his girlfriend lived.

She said also went home and informed her husband that Phiri had set fire on a

curtain at the house where the husband’s girlfriend lived.

She said the following morning Phiri went to her house after hearing that the house burnt.

She said in fear she revealed to the owner of the house that Phiri was the person who set fire to a curtain in her house.

She said they were both apprehended but later she was released.

Another witness Morris Chungupila 21 said Rhoda Mwale is his wife and Mirriam Phiri is her friend.

He said it was around 20:00 hours when his wife informed him that Phiri had set fire on a curtain at the house of the complainant.

He said the following morning Phiri came and admitted having set fire to a curtain in his presence.

He said his wife was apprehended together with Phiri and they were taken to Simon Mwanza Kapwepwe police post.

He said his wife was later released.

Phiri said she had no questions to ask the witnesses during cross examination but asked to be given another chance to engage a lawyer.

Magistrate Kaoma said interest of justice she can engage a lawyer from legal aid board.

Man gets suspended sentence for stealing RABECCA BANDA writes @SunZambian

Goats theif fined K3000 MULENGA MUSONDA writes @SunZambian A 42 years old Farmer who stole 3 Goats will part away with double the amount of the value of the loot after the Court fined him K3,000 for his criminal act.

In this matter Harry Nachangwa was facing one count of Stock Theft contrary to the Laws of Zambia.

Particulars of the offence are that Nachangwa stole 3 Goats valued at K1,500 the property of Elias Chiyanika.

The incident happened on September 6, 2020 in Choma.

When he appeared for facts before the Choma Magistrates Court, resident Magistrate Ethel Phiri convicted him in his own admission.

According to the facts dictated

by Public Prosecutor Catherine Sakala, the accused after stealing the animals sold them in Lusaka and bought some home provisions including alcohol as he was going back to Choma.

Magistrate Phiri fined Nachangwa K1500 and in default to face 6 months imprisonment with hard labour.

She also ordered that he compensates the complainant the value of the stolen animals and failure, a warrant of distress will be issued.

Muzzle Loader Gun eanrs man K2000 fine MULENGA MUSONDA writes @SunZambian The Choma Magistrates Court has fined a 34 years old man K2,000 for unlawful possession of a Muzzle Loader Gun without a License.

Honest Kaaba appeared before Resident Magistrate Ethel Phiri charged with 2 Counts - Unlawful Possession of Government Trophy and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm contrary to the Laws of Zambia.

Particulars of the offence in

count one are that Kaaba had in his possession 2 Bush Buck carcasses without a certificate issued there of.

In count two, Kaaba was found with a Firearm without a license.

The incidents happened on September 22, in Choma district.

When he appeared for Facts before Court, Kaaba admitted that the statement read by Public Prosecutor Catherine Sakala was a true reflection of what happened.

According to the Facts, the accused was apprehended

with the Carcasses and Gun redhanded in a Private ranch.

In passing the sentence, Magistrate Phiri observed the fact that he was a first offender and remorseful of his actions after he demonstrated his remorse by crying.

She thus sentenced him to 12 months imprisonment with hard labour in count one but suspended the sentence for 24 months.

In count two she fined Kaaba K2,000 and in default to serve 6 months imprisonment with hard labour.

The Lusaka magistrates court has sentenced a man to six months Imprisonment with hard labour but suspended for 12 months for stealing property worth K1,200.

Before magistrate Felix Kaoma was Tobias Banda and Keith Silumba accused of stealing 10 radian lamps, meter amps, two sockets and two lamps worth K1,200 property of Bonanza development company.

Facts where that Silumba stole the items and was apprehended by the security guard before he could walk out of the gate.

Silumba was later taken to Ngwerere police station where the matter was reported.

Silumba said he made a mistake because what he did was wrong.

Silumba said he did not steal the sockets and lamps but all the other items listed on the indictment.

He pleaded for mercy saying his family will suffer if he is sent to jail.

Magistrate Kaoma said he should count himself luck because he rarely gave suspended sentences.

He said he has given Silumba a second chance considering that the accused admitted the charge without wasting the courts time but however he will be jailed if he commits a similar offence with 12 months.

The court set October 7 2020 for trial in respect of accused number one.

KALALWE MUKOSA sees bright future for Chinsali Central PETER SICHALI writes @SunZambian

is passion to serve the people as opposed to taking part in governance and decision making, inspired him to join politics in 2004 and later contested for Chinsali Central parliamentary seat in 2016 at the age of 32, on the Patriotic Front ticket winning with a landslide against his closest rivals.

Kalalwe Mukosa says inspiring more youths to join politics and participate in the running of the affairs the country, is on top of his list of what he hopes to accomplish at a personal level.

“My dream is to see many young people inspired to participate in deciding their own destiny by taking part in politics,” he said.

The Chinsali Central lawmaker has also supported empowerment programmes across his constituency to support the national agenda of alleviating poverty.

“I gave 4 goats valued at K1,600 to Green Farmer Market women's group in Chinsali as empowerment. The 10 member group was represented by Prisca Mukuka, Lydia Lwamba and Martha Kapambwe,” he shared recently.

“I urged the beneficiaries that

they should not be tempted to kill or sell the goats so that they can grow the number. I mentioned to them that the youth group that I gave the goats a few months ago disappointed me because after giving them goats for empowerment, they killed some for relish and sold the others that remained and as at today they don't any goats.

Kalalwe Mukosa, joined politics at a tender age of 20.

He did part of his primary and secondary education at Chinsali Basic School, from grade 1-9 and later went to Mungwi Technically Secondary School after coming out best student in the district in grade 9 examination.

After doing two terms at Mungwi Technical Secondary School, he decided to come back to Kenneth Kaunda Secondary where he completed his Senior Secondary education with yet again best results in the district in the year 2001.

In 2003, he went to ZCAS College to study Chartered Institute of Management accountants and later studied Bachelor of Arts and honors in Accounting at Athelon Institute of Technology.

He decided to further his studies with a Master of Business Administration with specialisation in International Business.

After his studies, he got employed by National Breweries Plc as Treasury Accountant from 2006 to 2008 and later joined First Alliance Bank (Z) Ltd as Officer-in-Charge of Risk and Compliance from 2009 to 2012.

Since being elected into office, as Member of Parliament, Mr Mukosa has embarked on various development projects such as rehabilitation of township roads, construction of Chinsali General Hospital, construction of 10 network towers, progress on the water reticulation project, commencement of works on Mbesuma Bridge.

“I want to see to it that all projects that have been started in Chinsali, are completed,” Mr Mukosa said.

Since 1964, the people of Joseph village have been covering a distance of 15 kms to access health services from the nearest Lubwa hospital.

From the time he became an MP in 2016, CDF funded Nashinga rural health clinic is the fifth rural health clinic that has been successfully constructed in Chinsali. This is in addition to the 300 bed capacity Chinsali General Hospital, the biggest hospital in Muchinga Province which is currently being used as an epicenter for the Covid-19 patients in Muchinga

The Parliamentary journey for Mr Mukosa, has not been all smooth because of some major challenges his Constituency still faces, such as bad state of feeder roads, poor access to safe and clean water, inadequate classroom blocks for some schools and lack of health posts in some places that are far from the Boma.

“Three feeder roads will be worked on under the World Bank rural roads connectivity project, the water in township will be available as soon as the water reticulation project is completed. The construction of the remaining 4 rural health posts out 6 from the 650 rural health posts has revamped. We are also constructing a clinic in Nashinga of Lubwa Ward, under CDF,” he said.

The support that he receives from the members of the constituency/electorates, the church and his family keeps him going despite the challenges he faces in his course of duty as MP. “The challenges really lie in some people not understanding what the role of an MP is because sometimes people want help in cash form, which you may not have and the moment you say you do not have it, then it's a problem,” he explained.

When asked what plans he has for the Constituency, Mr Mukosa said he wants to that the government finishes the construction of Chinsali

Mulilansolo road, the township roads, Mbesuma Bridge and the township water reticulation network.

After having constructed the Chunga Bridge, he said, connecting polling centres to the national electricity grid remains on top of his development agenda.

Other development plans include construction of network towers in all the areas where people live in Chinsali, ensuring that rural health posts are constructed in strategic places, construction of feeder roads, including the Lubwa to Nashinga road, Choshi to Cheswa Chambeshi road, Kambwi to Chifuta road.

“We plan to continue building classroom blocks for schools that have inadequate classroom blocks, market shelters in areas where marketeers want to do business but they do not have markets from CDF allocations,” Mr Mukosa said The youthful parliamentarian also plans to continue lobbying for scholarships for youths and support the skills centre so as to enhance its capacity in impacting various skills in them.

In terms of future political aspirations, he plans to recontest Chinsali Central parliamentary seat in 2021 if the people who elected him approve of his performance and plans to continue serving them.

Insurers declare budget positive IAZ looks forward to being a key partner for sustainable economic growth and financial protection, says the association’s president, Nkaka Mwashika.

Additionally, the financial institution has expressed concern about the financing strategy of the plan.

The 2021 national budget announced last week on Friday has gone up 12.8 percent to K119.6 billion from K106 billion 2020 budget.

ZANACO indicated that the increase in the budget amount of K13.6 billion was wholly swallowed by an increase in allocations towards debt service obligations which had gone up by K13.7 million.

The commercial bank said this in its anatomy of Zambia’s 2021 budget: An Embodiment of Economic Recovery and Resilience prepared

by Chewe Mwila, Gerald Soko and Patrick Chileshe.

“Although the budget size was up 12.8 percent compared to this year’s, the increase was not a fresh injection of cash to stimulate the economy but was mainly due to the increase in debt service obligations under the general public service function.

“The general services function was up 31.1 percent to K57.8 billion (48.3 percent) with over 84 percent going to debt service,” Zanaco said.

It said resources for most important economic affairs functions were cut down 1.4 percent to K21.5 billion after allocations on roads, international airports and strategic food reserves took knocks of 41.1 percent, 68.9 percent and 21.6 percent respectively.

This, Zanaco explained, was in view of allocations to election activities and Members of Parliament’s gratuity.

According to Zanaco, increased budgetary allocation to education, health, social and environment protection come at the back of reductions on defence, housing and community amenities, public order safety and recreation/culture/religion.

“Put together, the expenditure side shows that the increased 2021 budget size will feed the monster in ballooning debt while starving economic affairs,” it warned.

Meanwhile, Zanaco said next year’s financing strategy would raid the domestic credit market, which already had a bias of lending to Government at the expense of the private sector.

“The K17.4 billion (equivalent to 14.6 percent of the total budget) we intend to borrow from domestic lenders will surely continue disadvantaging the productive private sector and therefore puts into question the feasibility of the growth target.

“In addition, the Government has only allocated K2.8 billion towards the dismantling of arrears that are sitting well above K20 billion owed to a private sector that has been lamenting lack of liquidity in the economy,” the Bank said.

ENCHMARKS set for the coming year indicate that the setbacks experienced in 2020, such as the economic impact of COVID-19, can be overturned, says Insurers Association of Zambia (IAZ).

IAZ looks forward to being a key partner for sustainable economic growth and financial protection, says the association’s president, Nkaka Mwashika.

Dr Mwashika said the insurance fraternity followed the 2021 national budget proceedings with keen interest.

He said in a statement that the pronouncement concerning procurement of local goods and services was a positive move for the local economy.

Dr Mwashika noted that Government has presented a bill to repeal and replace the Public Procurement Act No. 12 of 2008 with a view of promoting the purchase of local goods and services.

“This will result in the growth of local industries, and risk management tools such as insurance will have an important part to play in securing the growing businesses.

“Cover such as fire insurance, liability insurance, goods-in-transit, and contractors all-risks and group life insurance, will be very important for economic activity,” Dr Mwashika said.

Dr Mwashika said Government’s plan to focus on the deployment of climate smart agriculture technologies and practices, was a welcome move.

This, he explained, was a prudent way to manage the risks associated with rain-fed farming.

“The insurance sec-

tor continues to provide Weather Index Insurance cover, and the industry will also be available to discuss different forms of insurance for the technology which will soon be in widespread use by the farming community,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dr Mwashika said Government’s commitment to reducing domestic debt would improve liquidity in the economy.

For insurers, he said, premium received in a timely manner meant that the insurer would be able to invest it, so that timely settlement of claims would also be assured.

Dr Mwashika said the plans to commission the 750 megawatts of power station were a positive sign for the

economy.

“Economic activity will increase with the increased availability of electricity, and this in turn will mean the insurance sector will be able to provide more services, as the economic activity increases,” he said.

He further said: “news of the Zambia Gold Company Limited, established to spearhead gold mining and trading activities in the country, raises the prospect of increased economic activity for local companies such as suppliers and service providers.

“We are confident that local industries such as insurance will be included among service providers for the upcoming gold mining sector.”

Ex-Audi boss Rupert Stadler has become the first top executive to stand trial over Germany's "dieselgate" scandal, which rocked the car industry in 2015.

Mr Stadler appeared before a Munich court on Wednesday on charges including fraud, which he denies.

Audi's owner Volkswagen has admitted to installing software that was capable of cheating emissions tests in 11 million diesel vehicles worldwide.

Not a single top execu-

tive has been convicted over the scandal in Germany.

However, two VW employees have received jail terms in the US. Mr Stadler is accused of knowingly selling cars which had manipulated engine software and did not comply with environmental standards.

A long-distance passenger bus collided head-on with a motorcycle on the Mwense road in Luapula province.

RTSA Head of Public Relations Frederick Mubanga said the bus, which had about 36 people on board, was coming from Nchelenge, enroute to Ndola on the Copperbelt.

Mr. Mubanga explained that preliminary investigations indicated that the driver of the bus was attempting to avoid a pothole, when he veered into the way of the motorcycle.

There is urgent need to take a more sober approach to operating vehicles and respecting the rules of driving.

Slogans such as ‘Arrive Alive’ come to mind in troubling times such as these.

People travel for work, school, social duty and leisure and it should never be a risk to be on the road.

All it requires is the correct mindset of the drivers with the correct level of caution and attention to other road users.

THIS week has started with a very painful reminder of how speed kills.

On Monday, the nation woke up to the heart wrenching news of the death of musician David Phiri commonly known as Daev Zambia - who perished along three others in a road traffic accident (RTA).

Yesterday, Zambia Police spokesperson, Esther Katongo confirmed the death of five people in a RTA in Luapula Province barely 24 hours after a bus had overturned killing 6 people.

The accident happened on Monday around 20 30 hours along MansaSamfya road, when an unregistered Toyota Harrier which was being driven by Taila Simpemba aged, 22, of Nakonde who was driving from South to Northern direction.

Ms Katongo said that when the driver reached Chief Chisunka area, he lost control of the motor vehicle due to excessive speeding.

She said the driver died on the spot and identified other deceased passengers as Jackson Nshinka aged 32, Morgan Kachemba aged five (05) years, another female juvenile Bridget Chishima and Amon Nshinka, aged 2 all of Kaputa District.

“The injured are in Mansa General Hospital being attended to and have been identified as Mary Chileya aged 22, male juvenile Reuben Musonda aged five (05) months, and Elija , other names not known aged 30.

In the same year, Mwitwa also won the Heroes and Unity Cup to it a double. The Warriors’ heroes were winger Noel Chama and Matthews Njovu in a 2-1 victory over Nkana Red Devils whose consolation was scored by winger Godfrey Muselepete.

And Mwitwa’s name is forever written in gold letters in both club and national hall of fame for his larger-than-life performance in the then BP Zambia plc-sponsored tournament, the BP Challenge Cup (BP Top 8) When he almost singlehandedly carried his team on his shoulders, in winning the 1989 and 1991 titles.

In the former final, in a grandfinale when Warriors embarrassed and destroyed Zambia Air Force side Red Arrows 6-1 at Independence Stadium, the show and spotlight was Mwitwa’s - to a lion’s share - in keeping with his nickname of Tiger.

The Timothy Mwitwa fact-file

been christened by various names at various stages of its existence since 1964: Zambia Challenge Cup, Shell Challenge Cup, BP Challenge Cup and finally BP Top Cup at the time the last tournament was played in 2008 when corporate sponsorship was withdrawn altogether and hence the natural death of one of the biggest and richest tournaments in Zambia’s domestic football.

Suffice it to say that the first player to have scored a hat-trick in the tournament was Green Buffaloes’ Pele Kaimana whose team flattened Konkola Blades 5-2 in the 1979 final before Mwitwa would follow suit in 1989.

Nkana’s Musole Sakulanda would join the select band in 2000 when the 12-time Premier League champions would scotch the seemingly jinxed Chililabombwe side 5-1 in a final played at Chingola’s Nchanga Stadium.

But then Mwitwa would pour water on the hat-trick records in the final of the tournament by netting a super hat-trick (four goals) in the 1991 final of the same championship.

The man also known by the moniker of Teacher, was the hero of the all-conquering team of 1991 when it tore the seemingly forever jinxed Konkola to shreds in a 7-0 mauling of the Chililabombwe side.

Other scorers on the day for Warriors were striker M’gaiwa, defender Changwe and Chilumba.

Elsewhere, Mwitwa won the Champion of Champions Cup three times in 1987, 1989 and 1991 the tournament he won the most at Warriors.

And in his only Mosi Cup victory with the men from Railway Ground (Godfrey Chitalu Stadium) in 1987, his team beat Power Dynamos 3-2, be it as it may that on this occasion, Mwitwa was not among the scorers.

In all, Mwitwa won 9 honours while playing for Warriors: 1 Premier League title, three Champion of Champions Cups, 2 Charity Shields, 2 BP Challenge Cups and 1 Mosi Cup to put the cherries on a truly glorious club career, with a touch of gloss.

Mwitwa joined Nkana Fc at the start of the 1993 season before

he lost his life in the Gabon Air Disaster with 17 of his fellow colleague and two coaches and 12 others on the ill-fated buffalo military plane.

INTERNATIONAL CAREER Capped for Zambia between 1990 and 1993, Mwitwa was always valued for his imaginative and creative play on either flanks of the field where, in the last two years before the Gabon plane crash, he had to fight off competition from Mwila Numba on the left flank on the one hand and on the other, the right side of the field where his brief Nkana Fc team-mate, Moses Chikwalakwala, was a prime candidate.

For the record, Mwitwa made two African Cup of Nations (AfCON) appearances in 1990 and 1992 – on both occasions alongside his Warriors’ club-mates, goalkeeper Richard Mwanza and defender-cum-midfielder Samuel Chomba.

Deceptive, outrageously skillful, ultra-intelligent, a consummate dribbler, a scorer of wonder and wonderful goals, of slender frame would best describe the man they fondly called “Teacher” or “Tiger” by his sea of admirers both at club and national level.

During the 1990 African Cup of nations held in Algeria, Mwitwa and the Ashious Melu captained side his colleagues – Efford Chabala, Richard Mwanza, John Soko, Whiteson Changwe, Eston Mulenga, Webster Chikabala, Linos Makwaza, Pearson Mwanza and Wisdom Chansa among others, reaped bronze after beating Nigeria 3-0 in the third play-off.

Two years later during the Senegal-staged continental showpiece, Mwitwa’s Zambia went out in the quarter-finals, losing 1-0 to Cameroon.

Mwitwa was a treasured player in Zambia’s twin-qualifiers of the 1994 Tunisia AfCON and USA World Cup between 1992 and early 1992 before the horrific Gabon plane crash occurred.

Mwitwa is fondly remembered

for the miracle goal he thundered in against Mauritius on August 16, 1992 at Lusaka’s Independence Stadium from an acute angle in a 2-1 win in the twin-qualifiers’ series referred to above.

The goal brought almost the entire stadium on its toes in appreciation of the wonder goal. The standing ovation must have lasted a good one minute.

PERSONAL LIFE Mwitwa was barely in his second year in marriage.

Sadly, his wife was heavily pregnant when the Gabon plane crash occurred in April 1993.

Timothy Mwitwa Jr. was born on May 3, 1993, the same day his father and 29 other heroes of the Gabon plane crash were being buried at the northern part of Independence Stadium at a place named Heroes’ Acre, in fond memory and remembrance of the 30 Gabon Air Disaster of April 28, 1993 who included 18 footballers, two coaches, five Zambia Air Force crew and five support Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) members.

How appropriate and apt that Mwitwa’s first born child had to be named after his wing-wizard father!

LEGACY For scoring two hat-tricks in the same domestic tournament, the BP Challenge Cup (BP Top 8), Mwitwa stands out on a different pedestal, sticking

out prominently like the Leaning Tower of Pisa of Italy or the Great Wall of China – both registered among the great wonders of the world by the World Heritage Sites Conservation Society (WHSCS).

Owing largely to his supreme confidence and unfailing ability to face any defender and beat him to the ball again and again Mwitwa was aptly and appropriately given the nickname “Teacher” – a name seen in the same light of a teacher giving lessons to his pupil.

Micho said the national team has done everything possible to ensure that it follows the right procedure of sending the invitation letters two weeks before the break to give clubs enough time to allow players to come home to represent their country.

“We can’t give the names of the international players called because we are having certain problems because some of the clubs have concerns because of FIFA and this Covid-19.

“In order to tell the truth we shall first assure in proper communication, the way we have done as stipulated in the FFIFA rules, two weeks before coming in we have sent invitation letters to the clubs they cannot claim that we are late.

“We have respected all what is stipulated however we are at the mercy of the clubs whether they will release the players or not. Releasing them will be well, not releasing them will require a backup plan,” said Micho.

The Serbian said a back-up plan will require the full assessment of local players who are competing for positions with each position having four players.

“We have four players per position fighting and competition is something we are looking for from every player.

He said players need to give the best possible service because they are not preparing for the three friendly games alone.

“Our story is not starting and ending with the three friendly games in October that it is continuing with the start of our league.

“I’m really excited because an action packed period is coming and working with Zambian players it feels like a fish which is back in water,” Micho said.

Zambia will play Malawi and South Africa on October 8 and 11 respectively before facing Kenya on October 13 in Nairobi.

Copper Queen’s fundraising drive gains momentum MINISTER of Sports Emmanuel Mulenga conferred with the Football Association of Zambia constituted committee of eminent women set to spearhead fundraising activities for the senior Zambia Women National Team ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

general secretary Joseph Chimpampwe officially presented the committee members to the minister at Government Complex.

The committee comprises seasoned corporate gurus headed by Zanaco board chairperson Charity Lumpa.

Other members are former Bank of Zambia (BoZ) deputy governor in charge of administration Dr Tukiya

Mabula-Kankasa, Priscilla Nkanza, Brenda Kunda and Ambassador Ndiyoyi Mutiti.

The committee will undertake various fundraising activities and are expected to liaise with First Lady Esther Lungu who is the matron of the Copper Queens.
