In this month's Men's Issue, we salute the men (and boys) who help make our community great.
Our cover features some of the men who make things happen in the Southlake and Westlake area: Jon Atwood, President of Atwood Custom Homes; Dean DeCavitte of DeCavitte Properties; Shawn Horne, Director of Good Times and Leisure for Calabrese Italian restaurant; Kyle and Paul Moss of Beckett Graham Companies; and John Webb of Heritage Custom Homes. Joining them, and styling their outfits for this gentlemen's issue, is Roy Rizwan, owner of XAR Clothier in Southlake Town Square.
You'll also read about Southlake resident Michael Carter, who had the great opportunity to throw the first pitch at the Texas Rangers opening day baseball game. Mike is a longtime season ticket holder who has made baseball watching a favorite sport for his entire family, from his wife Lynette to his three children and many grandchildren. Mike has been a Southlake resident for 24 years, and he had the time of his life throwing the first pitch to baseball legend "Pudge" Rodriguez.
A young gentleman of Southlake we're pleased to recognize this month is Leo Wanjura, 16, a Southlake resident and Carroll High School sophomore, who has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout with Boy Scouts of America. For his Eagle Project, Leo managed over 30 volunteers in building an accessible-play "gaga ball pit" for Amy’s Wish With Wings, a Texas non-profit providing support to children with diverse needs. The ball pit features an ADA-compliant door so all may enter and play. We are so proud of this young man for his outstanding community achievements.
Within our other pages, you'll also see more newsmakers around Southlake, Westlake and surrounding areas - people who are benefitting our community in so many ways and networking to make everyone feel welcome.
Of course, we don't want to miss recognizing Father's Day and all the dads out there who will be celebrating their special holiday this month. For our family, my daughter Ava is the light of our life and the reason it's so special for me to be a dad. Here's to all the dads and everything they do every day throughout the year!
Have a great June and, as always, if you have news to share, please send us an email. We love to hear about your news and events!

ARTICLE BY SALLY CROCKER PHOTOGRAPHY KENDRA SWALLS (COVER & PROFILE)For this month’s Gentlemen's Issue, Southlake City Lifestyle salutes all the men of Southlake.

Q: WHAT MAKES LIVING AND WORKING IN THE SOUTHLAKE AREA SPECIAL FOR YOU?
A: Being a local to the area since 1980, growing up here and watching all the growth over the years, and now being a part of the new developments and growth, adds a little “extra.”
Q: WHAT DO YOU MOST ENJOY ABOUT YOUR WORK, AND WOULD YOU LIKE TO MENTION ANYTHING SPECIAL ABOUT WHAT YOU DO, WHY, HOW YOU GOT INVOLVED IN YOUR LINE OF WORK, ETC.?
A: I enjoy watching all the new residents move in from out of state and all the diversity of the families we help find new homes for. I love asking what brings people to choose to live in this area and what they do for a living.
Q: HOW DO YOU FIND YOUR WORK/LIFE BALANCE?
A: “Work hard = play harder.” We try to get out of the bubble as much as possible and appreciate the blessings we take for granted daily.

SOUTHLAKE RESIDENT MICHAEL CARTER THROWS TEXAS RANGERS FIRST 2024 PITCH
When Southlake resident Michael Carter got the call asking if he’d like to throw the first pitch at the World Series Champion Texas Rangers opening baseball game for the 2024 season, it was an overwhelming and emotional surprise.
For kids like Mike, growing up in the 1950s, baseball was THE major sport.
“Every little boy loved baseball,” Mike says. “Baseball is emotion. I feel a big connection to the game. There’s just something about being out there and being a part of it all.”
Mike started attending Rangers games around 1973. It was exciting, he says, when Billy Martin was hired as manager shortly thereafter. Mike had watched Billy play for the New York Yankees when they vied for the World Series in the 1950s. He liked Billy’s feisty attitude and wanted to see him in action as Rangers manager.
A memorable day indeed for Southlake resident Mike Carter.Mike’s season ticket account goes back to 1979, and his favorite memory in the original Arlington Stadium was his birdseye view of baseball legend Nolan Ryan pitching his 7th no-hitter. Mike’s seats moved to The Ballpark in Arlington in 1994 where more memories were made.
Over the years, all three of Mike’s children have attended games with him. His wife Lynette has gone as well, and nearly all 10 grandchildren have been to games.
“I have just one rule – I don’t take them to a game until they’re potty trained,” he laughs.
Mike’s been a Southlake resident for 24 years. He remembers his home being built in 1999, as the original section of Southlake Town Square was constructed. Back then, Mike says, it took only 10 minutes and four traffic lights down Southlake Blvd. from Highway 114 to get to his garage off South Peytonville Ave.
“It’s been amazing to witness Southlake’s growth over the years,” he says.
As a season ticket holder, Mike has a lot of interaction with his account manager and Rangers sales executives. The Rangers wanted a special 2024 opening day with a long-time season ticket holder throwing the first pitch, and Mike was their first choice.
“It was an incredible honor. I couldn’t believe what they were asking, and when I hung up the phone to tell my wife, I had tears in my eyes,” Mike says. “It’s still such an emotional feeling for me.”
“Previous opening days have featured first pitches by well-known figures like former President George W. Bush and former Arlington mayor Tom Vandergriff, who helped bring the Rangers to Texas. But I’m just a regular guy who had a chance at a storybook experience,” Mike says.
“I will forever be grateful to the Texas Rangers organization for asking me to do this.”
Pitching to Texas Rangers Hall of Famer “Pudge” Rodriguez was a great feeling, Mike says.
“Pudge made me feel so comfortable. When I went to shake hands with him afterward, he gave me a big bear hug instead.”
Mike wasn’t sure if he’d get to keep the ball, but Pudge signed it and presented it to him as they were walking back toward the stands.
“Fans all along the way were cheering and clapping, fist bumping me, and wanting to take pictures. Even now, people still come up to me and say, ‘Aren’t you the person who threw out the first pitch?’” Mike says.

Mike and his son Ben Carter with the World Series Trophy, taken at the first World Series home game.Whether you are a new golfer or have been playing for decades, we all want the same thing—to be a single-digit handicap (or better). In some professions, golfing with clients is a must, and slicing off the tee box can kill the deal.
If you are buying clubs off the rack, you aren’t giving yourself the best chance for success. Golf technology is evolving every year, and although you don’t need to buy a new driver each year, if you’ve been playing with the same clubs for 5+ years, it’s time to take advantage of the new equipment. Newer clubs have lower and deeper center of gravity (CG), creating an easier launch off the face. Even off-center strikes can produce a straight shot with the right set of clubs. Any major golf store will fit you for free—just make sure you get the correct length club and size grip. The clubs don’t swing themselves, so don’t neglect instruction and practice, but getting the right equipment is a vital piece of the puzzle.
On drivers and hybrids, some of the newest equipment have premium shaft options off the rack. Generally, a $300 driver has a low-grade $15 shaft that you should change. The shaft is the engine of the club, so getting custom shafts will add distance and forgiveness—guaranteed.
As for the putter, you use it more than any other club in your bag on every round of golf. It should be the most tailored club in your bag.
Get good golf instruction, REGULARLY.
02.
We’ve all heard someone say, “I should get a lesson sometime.” To be effective, you need regular lessons from a PGA certified pro, not just one lesson. Getting quality instruction from the same instructor can turn slices into draws and give you the confidence to play with anyone on any course. Years ago, golf instructors started instruction with chipping and putting and then graduated to the driver. Now, instructors have been pressured to start with the driver because we all want to outdrive our friends. Resist that temptation! Get instruction on your short game and irons first. My friend regularly outdrives me by 50 yards, but my ball is in the hole first most of the time because of my training and practice on the short game.
Read quality golf books for a higher golf IQ.
03.
There are thousands of golf books, but don’t worry, you only need to read a handful of them to up your golf IQ. Here are some top reads: Short game: Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible by Dave Pelz Mental game: Golf is Not a Game of Perfect by Bob Rotella Mechanics: Practical Golf by John Jacobs Ball flight laws: The Practice Manual by Adam Young (only read the first 50 pages)
Practice your short game every day.
04.
You don’t even have to spend time away from your family while practicing if you don’t have a golf simulator. You can practice putting and chipping on the carpet while watching TV with your family.
Chipping and the bump and run: The only mechanical advice I will give is the most important lesson you can learn in the short game. When you miss your approach shot you must be able to chip the ball within 8 feet of the hole for a one putt. Try this shot from Dave Peltz’s short game book. It gets me up and down from 25 yards out to just off the green.
Instructors have been pressured to start with the driver because we all want to outdrive our friends. Resist that temptation! Get instruction on your short game and irons first.
