What’s up, Fayetteville!
I’m Will Newton, a contributing writer for Fayetteville City Lifestyle. Originally from southern Arkansas, I moved up to northwest Arkansas to study at John Brown University, which I graduated from in 2023 with a bachelor’s degree in English literature with minors in creative writing and pre-law. During my studies, I fell deeply in love with storytelling, and, after several stints working with on-campus publications and a career-inspiring summer internship with Arkansas Business in Little Rock, I knew my professional calling was to be a writer. Almost a year ago, a friend and former City Lifestyle photographer connected me with our awesome editor, Gavin, and I’ve been sharing the incredible stories of local community members and businesses ever since! My time with Fayetteville City Lifestyle has easily been one of the most rewarding opportunities I have ever been a part of, and I’m excited to continue connecting our readers deeper into the Fayetteville community.
Our August issue shines a spotlight on the community members and local businesses that advocate for the parts of our lives we care about the most: our children and pets. While I don’t have children of my own, I am a proud cat dad, so I have a personal understanding of the importance of making sure the lives we curate for those we care for are the best they can be – and so does Fayetteville. From a nationally recognized local nonprofit dedicated to nourishing emotional development in children through art to a cafe that strongly encourages bringing your furry companion, our city has got your little ones covered.
If you see me out-and-about around Fayetteville, please stop and say hello – I’d love to hear your story.

Fayetteville-based nonprofit, Art Feeds, is aiding social, emotional and intellectual development in children across the globe through art lessons and projects
Forever on the palm of Art Feeds’ founder Meg Bourne’s hand is a tattoo of—a palm of a hand. The tattoo, a child’s hand with a heart engraved within the ink, is merely a small stamp on her skin, but it holds almost two decades of significance. In 2009, a college-aged Bourne was volunteering in a behavioral disorder classroom. While she worked diligently with each of the students, there was one student in particular who was clearly struggling to express himself. After learning more about his story, Bourne, an artist herself, used the creative outlet as a means to aid the young boy in finding his confidence — and Bourne swiftly saw progress. Bourne’s progress with the boy led her to utilizing art as a method of communication with the rest of the classroom. Her methodology soon led to the start of her nonprofit. Its logo? A drawing of the hand of her first client and the tattoo embossed on her palm.
“Creativity is an access point in helping kids show their own intelligence,” said Bourne. “I’ve always had an understanding that there is no bad person — we are just a product of what has happened to us. At Art Feeds, we help little artists process these big feelings.”
The nonprofit has grown exponentially since its 2009 founding in Joplin, Missouri. After a tornado swept through the town, the nonprofit shifted gears, expanding from marginalized classrooms to classrooms of all types and sizes.
“This shift showed us the need for wellness for everyone,” said Bourne. “Art is a collective expression, so we expanded our programming from there into other communities.”
In 2015, the nonprofit relocated its headquarters to Fayetteville. Bourne says that the city’s accessible volunteer crowd, its excitement for creativity, and its commitment to investing time, labor and finances into its businesses is what led them to make the move.
In its lifetime, Art Feeds has supported over 200,000 children from preschool through middle school in emotional, social and intellectual development through its programming across the globe. The nonprofit’s website offers over 400 lessons and projects for children of all ages, each designed as a tool for parents, caretakers and educators to foster a safe environment for childhood development.
The nonprofit utilizes process-based art, or art without a fixed outcome or specific intention. Unlike other art lessons or projects that clearly map out a list of steps to complete the project, Art Feeds instead focuses on the feeling or message that each art project evokes.
A popular in-person lesson from Art Feeds is its Paintbrush Buddies project, which utilizes upcycled paint brushes to create characters. According to Bourne, the project is approached with a therapeutic frame, with the children often using the paintbrush to create someone who inspires them or with whom they feel safe. “It helps them name what’s important to them and helps others understand,” said Bourne.
CONTINUED >
“CREATIVITY IS AN ACCESS POINT IN HELPING KIDS SHOW THEIR OWN INTELLIGENCE … AT ART FEEDS, WE HELP LITTLE ARTISTS PROCESS BIG FEELINGS.”
The lessons designed by Art Feeds are accessible through a two-tier monthly membership, each tailored to different needs. Alongside its membership levels, the nonprofit offers a community assist program, which grants accepted applications the full list of components from Art Feeds, as well as art supplies, free of charge to children and educational institutions around the world. The program works with over 25,000 children a year.
“Resourcing kids and helping them understand that they have creativity that they are born with, and no one can take it away from them as a resource — these are skills that are diminishing across the board,” said Bourne. “Our hope is that they see art as a tool that is accessible, that is not barred.”
If you are interested in supporting Art Feeds’ mission, the nonprofit will be hosting a fundraiser throughout the summer, encouraging community members to pay a small amount per month to provide a free Art Feeds membership to whoever may need it. Additionally, Art Feeds sells art supplies on its website, artfeeds.org. For each package that is sold, a child receives a collection of art supplies.
“Where kids are, we want Art Feeds to be.”

At Mount Comfort Veterinary Care, compassion starts at home. For many members of the team, their bond with animals runs deeper because of their own experiences caring for pets with complex medical needs. They are pet owners who have lived through tough diagnoses, long nights, and the deep love that comes with doing everything for a pet in need. Their personal experiences have created a powerful layer of empathy that carries over into every interaction with the families they serve.
For Chloe Harris, the road with her cat Ein has been turbulent. “He’s my oldest and most medically problematic cat,” she says with affection. Ein lives with a list of medical challenges, including a serious heart condition, persistent GI issues, complications from an eye enucleation, allergies, and chronic ear infections. Managing his care has meant traveling out of state for specialist appointments, keeping
up with a demanding home care routine, and bearing the emotional and financial weight that comes with long-term illness. “I’ve lived what many of our clients live,” Chloe says. “There’s a whole world behind the scenes of owning a chronically ill pet that you can’t fully understand until you’ve done it. Ein has helped me connect on a real level with the people who walk through our doors daily.”
At 17 years old, Brenna the dog has seen more than her fair share of sunrises, and for her human, Sarah Alvarado, every one of them is a gift. “Brenna has kidney disease and she’s in her golden years, so life looks a little different now,” Sarah says. That means a specialized diet, accommodations for incontinence, a rugfree home for easier mobility, and carefully managed spaces to keep her safe. Though her hearing and sight have faded, her joy hasn’t—she still loves soaking up the sun and riding in her very own doggy backpack. “The routines can be demanding, but it’s all worth it to give her a good quality of life,” Sarah says. “Caring for her at this stage in her life allows me to understand our senior patients and the tough decisions their families face.”
Alex Breslow has a home filled with heart, and two pets who’ve each had medical battles. Her dog Boone faced a frightening diagnosis of Rocky Mountain spotted fever, a tick-borne illness that left him weak and in constant pain. “Watching him suffer was terrifying,” she says. “But being there through his recovery brought us closer. I saw how much he relied on me, and it changed the way I think about care.” Then there’s Meatloaf, her cat with a chronic condition called Megacolon, which makes even routine bathroom visits difficult and painful. After his diagnosis in 2022, Meatloaf was hospitalized for nearly a month. It was a close call. “He almost didn’t make it,” Alex shares. “But he pulled through. Every day since then, his resilience inspires me. He reminds me how tough our patients are, and how important it is to be patient and compassionate.”
When Abby Phillips adopted Valkyrie from the shelter last October, she knew the tiny kitten had already been through a lot. Her back leg had been amputated after an unexplained injury, and just one day after coming home, Valkyrie began struggling to breathe. A visit to the vet revealed a life-threatening diaphragmatic hernia that required emergency surgery. “I was so overwhelmed and scared,”
Abby recalls. “She was still so new to me, and I already loved her so much.” With the support of the Mount Comfort team, Valkyrie made it through surgery and began to thrive. Today, she’s full of energy, mischief, and resilience. “She’s been such a warrior,” Abby says. “That experience reminded me how quickly we can bond with our pets and how deeply we love them. I carry that perspective with me into every appointment.”
At Mount Comfort, these stories reflect the foundation of how care is delivered. The team knows what it feels like to receive difficult news, to hope for one more good day, and to do everything possible for a pet who means the world to you. That kind of understanding doesn’t come from a classroom, but is shaped through love, loss, patience, and the small milestones that come from showing up every single day. It’s this lived experience that makes the care at Mount Comfort not only expert but deeply human.

LEONARD’S SUMMER APPRENTICESHIP UNDER GRANDFATHER DAVID ADAMS
At just 10 years old and in fifth grade, Leonard Kelly is spending his summer learning a craft alongside his grandfather, David Adams. David is not only a talented and kind mentor but also a dedicated fine jewelry designer whose passion for his work began early on in his life. Growing up on the West Coast surrounded by vibrant colors and creativity, David was introduced to the captivating art of metalwork and gemstones by a mentor while still in high school.
ARTICLE BY SYDNEY JOHNSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDREA PRUITT
Since then, David has built a remarkable career blending modern sophistication with timeless charm, turning raw metals and stones into elegant pieces that tell unique stories. After moving to Arkansas for work, he fulfilled his dream of owning a gallery in Fayetteville, where he has been creating beautiful jewelry for over 30 years. This summer, Leonard is stepping into his grandfather’s workshop as an apprentice, eager to learn the intricate art of jewelry making under David’s watchful guidance.
For Leonard, this summer opportunity is unlike any other. While many kids his age are dreaming of summer camps or video games, he is mastering tools and techniques that require patience, skill, and a steady hand, all while building a special bond with his grandfather. “It’s been pretty fun working with Grandpa this summer,” Leonard says with a grin. It’s evident that he’s been impacted by this experience. When asked about his favorite part of the apprenticeship, Leonard
“IT’S BEEN PRETTY FUN WORKING WITH GRANDPA THIS SUMMER,” - LEONARD KELLY
enthusiastically said, “Getting to play with the torch!” Under his grandfather’s seasoned instruction, Leonard has learned how to use the torch safely and effectively, a big deal for someone so young. He’s also learned how to pull metal properly, engrave intricate designs, and saw off excess metal from castings — all skills that bring the process of turning raw materials into beautiful jewelry.
One of the surprising things Leonard has discovered during his apprenticeship is just how long his grandpa has been doing this work. “I didn’t know he started
in high school!” Leonard says. The realization deepened his respect for the craft and the dedication it takes to keep at something for so many years. When asked if he could imagine doing the same thing his whole life, Leonard hesitates. “In high school, I don’t think I’ll know what I want to do for the rest of my life,” he admits. But for now, he’s happy learning from the best. When asked to describe his grandfather in three words, Leonard chose:
1. Kind
2. Smart
3. Talented
These words reveal the deep admiration Leonard holds for David, not just as a master craftsman but as a person who has inspired him during this special summer. Leonard’s apprenticeship with David Adams is about more than developing technical skills. It’s a rare opportunity for intergenerational bonding, a chance for a young boy to see the passion and dedication his grandfather pours into his craft every day. For David, sharing his decades of experience is a gift. “Watching Leonard learn and grow has been amazing,” he says. It’s not just about passing on skills, but about passing on a legacy.
This summer apprenticeship might just be the start of something special for Leonard. Whether he continues down this artistic path or finds a new passion, the lessons he’s learning about patience, craftsmanship, and family will stay with him for life. As Leonard plays with the torch or watches his precious black lab puppy Iris chase a ball across the yard, it’s clear that this summer is shaping a story of growth, connection, and discovery.
Just outside of downtown Fayetteville is a locally owned dog park and cafe, all in one
Ever wanted a place to eat and drink while still hanging with your dog? Right off the corner of Crossover and Huntsville Rd is Good Dog Cafe, a place where the food and beverage industry meets the dog park. If you are a pet owner, think about all the times you have taken your dog to the park. After thirty minutes, you’re ready to sit down or grab a refreshment, or use the restroom, but that’s not always an option. This was one of the starting thoughts for Tryphina Renz, owner of Good Dog Cafe. Having a place where people can relax with access to snacks, seating, and restrooms, while the dog plays in the yard, was once a dream for Tryphina. Six years ago, she bought this place, redid everything and built obstacles and fences — with no funding, just herself and support from peers. It was a huge risk, but worth it for Tryphina and Fayetteville. Renz always dreamed of a dog cafe, which sparked from working in several coffee shops and growing up an avid dog lover. “Why not combine the two?” Tryphina asked herself. The potential she saw in this dream is what drove her to succeed in the community. Meeting someone who has a dog is always an ice breaker, let’s be honest. At Good Dog, there is not one person you can’t talk ‘dog’ with. There is a middle ground in the space where all dogs and people are accepted. “It’s a great way to come together and disconnect from the outside world,” says Tryphina. “You look out in the yard, and not one person is on their phones;

everyone is just enjoying the space they are in with their pups.” This is the owner’s favorite part about her job.
Good Dog Cafe sees a variety of dogs, from 200 lb Great Danes to 20 lb Corgis. Every Saturday from 3 to 4 p.m., the space will hold a “Calling all dogs” pawty featuring a specific dog breed. From Huskies, Labrador Retrievers, and Doodles, the cafe welcomes all. Don’t worry, the business doesn’t forget the small pups; Sundays are for ‘Calling all small dogs’, where these tiny-sized animals can play and not feel overwhelmed by size around them. While dogs have their days, humans can have a little fun too. Some activities for customers include guitar lessons from a local guitarist and qigong in the mornings where yes, your dog is still welcome.
This indoor shop serves a vast selection of coffee, tea, breakfast and lunch items, smoothies, and gluten-free and vegan options. For dogs, there’s a fenced yard with pools for the hot temperatures, large blocks to play around, balls, and “pup cups”, of course.
The large menu includes breakfast quiches, turkey and cheese sandwiches, homemade syrups for coffee, and much more. There is a whole wall dedicated to a countless selection of local goods from local brands that Tryphina supports and partners with. They use coffee from Grounds and Hounds Coffee Co, where ‘every cup helps a pup’. Twenty percent of all profits go to pups in need. The cafe is proud to use this for all coffee and espresso in the store. Other items include dog-friendly cookies, handmade bandanas, collars, and trinkets for humans and pups.
All decor and seating in the Good Dog Cafe is second-hand, and makes the store even more unique. You can’t miss the dog chandeliers in each room, and each room has a different aesthetic where you can go to play games
with your friends or study for a test, with a calm ambiance. One of Tryphina’s goals with this cafe was to create a place for everyone to feel welcome with all breeds of dogs. Before playing outside, the business does require you to sign a waiver agreeing that your dog is up to date on vaccines and parasite-free. With a $6 fee, your dog is free to run around the yard all day. You and your pup are also free to leave to run some errands, and come back on the same day.
Small businesses are challenging, but worth it, and Tryphina does it all. Aside from work, she has 6 dogs of her own. You might spot one more than others: Whisper, known as the ‘cafe dog.’” She was recently rescued during a trip, but Tryphina firmly believes that “she chose her” and has made her life better. If you see Whisper, the spunky, black and white pup, around, don’t hesitate to play fetch with her. A special part of the cafe is that about half of the customers who come in don’t have pets. The business believes this is a therapeutic way for them to socialize with the community and play with furry friends. This playful coffee shop is open seven days a week until 3 p.m. “It’s just as much about the people as it is the dogs here,” says Renz. So, whether you have five dogs or none, make sure to stop into Good Dog Cafe and support your local dog cafe.
WHAT ARE SOME WAYS THAT THE FAYETTEVILLE PUBLIC LIBRARY SUPPORTS CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT?
I’d say the most significant way we do this is through our resources. Reading to kids is essential—not only for language development and cognitive growth, but it also strengthens the bond between caregivers and children. The library provides comfortable spaces and diverse resources to meet the needs of any family. We have books on anything you can imagine.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT THAT CHILDREN DEVELOP A LOVE FOR READING? HOW CAN PARENTS NURTURE HEALTHY READING HABITS FROM HOME?
A love for reading can develop in different ways. You might have a child who naturally develops a love for reading — they like sitting, listening, finding stories they love, and engaging with them. But a lot of kids do not develop a love for reading in that way. Their love is a certain topic, and that topic provides an entry point toward learning to love books. The library has all of those resources and we can support your love of reading — even if it doesn’t mean sitting still and listening to a book being read.
I have given this piece of advice to parents for over 20 years: find what your child likes in a book The specific topic doesn’t matter. Whatever your child expresses interest in, find that and make sure they have that book!
Two more things: let your child see you reading for yourself. Let them hear you say that you need to go to the library and find a book on gardening, cooking, or crochet. Lastly, do not stop reading to them. If nightly reading lasts five minutes with your two year old - that is ok! That doesn’t mean it will always stay that short. Develop the habit but be flexible with your expectations.
IS IT ABOUT BOOKS AND READING THAT NURTURES CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT?
A child needs to see themselves and others in books. Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop introduced a well-known metaphor surrounding this idea: books are mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors. Mirrors reflect your own experience; windows allow you to see into the lives of other people and cultures; sliding glass doors allow you to step into another world through books.
THE WORLD WE LIVE IN NOW IS VERY DIGITAL—HOW HAS THE LIBRARY ADAPTED TO THIS NEW ERA OF LEARNING FOR CHILDREN?
By using various resources to fulfill the needs of patrons. We have a digital library including downloadable books and audiobooks. In the teen library, we have a gaming room that appeals to 5th-12th graders. Beyond that, we have a Center for Innovation that specializes in the latest technologies and has experts to help guide patrons in their pursuits including: podcast studios, audio/video production studios, Mac labs, photo studios, fab labs, and simulators. There are age minimums for this equipment, but parents could use it to guide their children’s interest.
WHAT ARE SOME RESOURCES THAT THE FPL OFFERS CHILDREN AND PARENTS?
Library programming is typically enrichment: book clubs, art classes, storytimes, and performances. We also have some support-based programs like ACT tutoring, Homework Help, and Passionate About Literacy, a partnership with the University of Arkansas, where college students read with kids in a one-on-one setting
WHAT ARE SOME WAYS THAT THE FAYETTEVILLE COMMUNITY CAN SUPPORT THE LIBRARY?
Get a library card and use it! Attend programs! Sit and read here! Make us a regular part of your family’s routine.

GIVING DOGS THE ABILITY TO MAKE GOOD CHOICES WHILE TEACHING OWNERS HOW TO BE GREAT LEADERS ACROSS NWA
Meet Jessica Mashburn, a dog lover ever since she was a child. After realizing her skills one day, her passion got a new name— dog trainer. Running her local business, Okay Lady K9 Training, Mashburn’s quiet authority over even the most unruly pups has earned her a reputation in Fayetteville. Since 2017, she’s trained hundreds of dogs—from spoiled puppies to traumatized rescues. However, training involves not just the animals, but also the owners, and it is important to know how to continue the commitment after creating a new foundation with your K9.
“It’s not just play, it’s building a relationship with your dog, where they are always looking up to you for the next move.”
Jessica specializes in working with dogs with poor house manners, those who struggle in public, and those with behavioral problems. Why does she do it? Mashburn has a drive to improve the quality of life for dogs and the people who love them. Her favorite thing is seeing the looks of joy and relief in the eyes of the owner when they realize life with their dog just got easier. This is something most dog parents dream of. The confident, healthy relationship you’ve always yearned for with your dog begins when it has a clear understanding of what their role is in the household. Obedience training is the first place to start and set a fine line. Once your pet understands commands and what their role is, the owner needs to learn them too and apply them with confidence. Jessica will ensure all owners are comfortable with these commands and how to gain that respect from their fur baby.
Another question that many owners wonder about is the length of training. Every interaction you have with your dog is a training opportunity; never forget this. Both the dog and the owner have the possibility of success or failure. At Okay Lady, Jessica offers a variety of programs that you can decide what best fits your canine. The first choice is Doggy Day Training, combining daycare, structure, and manners to teach a foundation of commands. Most dogs will leave with a better attitude. Ages 6 months and up are welcome to day training. Another popular program is the three-week board, where Jessica will keep your pet and refresh their behavioral skills while away from their owners. One thing she enjoys doing is taking your pet to parks and public spaces, if approved by the owner, and socializing them without their
owner. Puppies are also always welcome at Okay Lady. Mashburn explains that the best time to start discipline and structure is as soon as a puppy is welcomed into the home. A very important plus from this program is off-leash and crate-training. For dogs that might take a little longer or have some conduct issues, Jessica recommends Behavior Rehabilitation. This is a reset for the dog and can take as long as the pup might need to help improve its behavior. These are just a few of her most popular programs. For more information, visit okayladyk9training.com for service options and customer stories. The local business’s website also includes at-home videos to watch and a contact form to sign up and meet Jessica.
Clients of Okay Lady K9 Training highly recommend Jessica and her phenomenal skills with their furry friends. One customer says, “We would highly recommend Jessica to anyone having an issue with their dog, or to help their dog adjust to being a well-behaved, loving companion.” No matter the age, Jessica Mashburn can work her magic using patience, respect, and communication with humans. Sign up for training now to change both your life and your puppy’s.
