Dear Reader,
Greetings! In this delightful edition, I invite you to embark on a marvelous journey into the captivating realm of style. Now, hold your horses! We’re not just delving into the latest fashion fads or the must-have accessories (although those are always a hoot to discuss). Style transcends mere garments and delves deep into the very essence of our being.
Style is everywhere, my friend. It’s in the way we decorate our homes, creating a perfect balance between “Wow, this looks amazing!” and “Oops, watch out for that Lego on the floor!”
But guess what? Style also permeates our conversations. Are you the maestro of witty one-liners, leaving your audience in stitches? Or perhaps you revel in profound philosophical discussions that leave everyone’s gray matter buzzing like a beehive.
Now, let me enlighten you about my personal style. I proudly christen it Mom of Four Chic. It’s an intricate dance, appearing poised and polished during Zoom calls while effortlessly blending in on the soccer field sidelines. Comfort and functionality are my trusty comrades, whispering sweet nothings like “Hey, you can rock those yoga pants and still look fabulous!”
This month, we are also graced with the return of schedules. Ah, the magical time when parents rejoice and children bemoan the end of their summer freedom. As a parent, it’s a bittersweet moment. On one hand, the serene ambiance of enjoying a cup of coffee and a hushed abode is a true pleasure. On the other hand, we must summon our inner warriors and engage in the epic saga of rousing our slumbering progeny from their cozy havens.
Back-to-school shopping, my dear reader, is an escapade in its own right. The quest for the perfect pencil case assumes the grandeur of an Indiana Jones expedition. We meticulously navigate vibrant aisles, fervently hoping to unearth the chosen one that shall render our child the envy of the classroom.
Yet, amidst this whirlwind, an exhilarating aura fills the air. It’s a time of fresh beginnings, pristine notebooks yearning to be filled with knowledge, and the promise of a year brimming with laughter and enlightenment.
Here’s to embracing your unique essence, dear reader! May your style radiate brighter than a disco ball, filling the world with joy and leaving all who encounter it spellbound. Cheers to unapologetically being yourself!

Throughout the second quarter, lack of inventory continued to fuel the "seller" market in our area, with few exceptions.
We continue to have less than a one-month supply of single family homes available. If you look at the chart below, sales are down primarily because there is a shortage of homes to sell, with new listings lagging behind number of sales.
WE HELP PLAN AND TRANSFORM YOUR SINGLE MOST VALUABLE ASSET INTO SPACES OF YOUR DREAMS, FOR YOU, YOUR FAMILY OR YOUR TEAM.

September is a time of transition, a month caught in between the summer heat and the start of the crisp autumn days. As the vestiges of late summer start to vanish, heralding in the crisp, golden days of autumn, it brings us an opportunity to renew, refresh and reinvent.
“Fall fashion is just endless. September and October are my favorite times of the year because the sweaters, boots and layers are coming out,” says Tara Vitollo, owner of Olcott Squared in Bernardsville. “That layering piece is essential because the day
often starts off chilly, then gets brutally hot and then turns freezing at night.”
Somerset Hills City Lifestyle invited Vitollo to create comfortable but sophisticated looks to help you ease into autumn when the mercury starts to drop.
“You can elevate a simple dress by pairing it with a funky blazer with a pattern or a sweater with embellishments,” Vitollo says. “That is the beauty of a layer: You have one key piece and then you can add a jacket, sweater or duster and change your shoes from a sneaker to a heel or a boot.”
When selecting colors, consider your skin tone. For instance, camel is a popular fall color, but if it does not suit you, you can substitute chocolate brown. “I like reds, but watch what you select,” she says. “There’s a difference between a blue-based red and an orange-based red. Blue, especially darker blue, is great for fall, as is lilac, which you can pair with a camel, taupe or chocolate brown. You can pop in those colors. Marigold is also a prominent fall color.”
Vitollo encourages people to break the rule of “no white after Labor Day.” “I wear white year round,” she says. “If you wear your favorite pair of white pants with a sleeveless cowl neck sweater, put your layering piece over it and a jacket and knee boots, riding boots or Doc Martens, you will look fabulous.”
She suggests selecting accessories that mirror the season’s transitional nature. “You’re coming off of summer hoops and not quite ready for the big, embellished holiday earrings, so look for studs or Raffia earrings,” she says. “Pearls are making a comeback, and gemstones—think turquoise, dark stones or any fashion-forward, showstopping piece—can finish your look.”

“That is the beauty of a layer: You have one key piece and then you can add a jacket, sweater or duster and change your shoes from a sneaker to a heel or a boot.”
With your look complete, it’s time to hit the town. “The Somerset Hills is the most wonderful place to celebrate the coming of autumn: The leaves are gorgeous. You can go to beautiful fields, breweries, cider mills and farms for hay rides. Downtown Bernardsville is popping. The streets are bustling, and we have so many beautiful restaurants and places to shop,” she says. “My children enjoy the farms, which is why I love my Doc Martens and high-top sneakers. They are so comfortable. Layering makes transitioning from day to night easy. I can kick off the Docs or my riding boots, put on a cute heel and am ready for a date night with my husband.”

THE EXPERTS AT GREENROSE FINE HOMES SHOW YOU HOW YOUR SPACE CAN REFLECT WHO YOU ARE
To know GreenRose Fine Homes is to know their catch phrase: “Love where you live!”
The award-winning design-build firm in Chester founded by Ken Malian and Steve Moran has been helping homeowners create, renovate and design their homes for 14 years.
In 2009, Malian and Moran launched GreenRose Enterprises, which purchased, renovated and flipped houses. As demand increased for their design and general contracting work, they expanded the business, which serves clients within about a 45-minute radius from their location, as well as Jersey Shore homes.
Today, the company—which has won numerous awards for interior design and service from Houzz, Qualified Remodeler and Chrysalis—employs professional designers and works with architects who then together approach the process in a concierge-like way by understanding how clients live. In addition, Moran, also a licensed Realtor with Turpin Realtors, can work with clients who wish to buy or sell a home and guide them with their staging needs.
“If you simply give people what they are asking for, you are not a designer; you are an order-taker,” says Moran. “Great designers solve problems for their clients. We get inside our clients’ heads and learn how to articulate their thoughts through design. Our job is to make clients’ homes and their spaces a reflection of their personalities. We’re always looking for ways
to merge form, function and style by procuring and curating unique pieces, fixtures and appliances that go beyond what is found in big box stores are customized to their individual style.” Color, when used purposefully, can effect great change in a room, says Moran, who is GreenRose’s lead designer and project site manager. “Dark colors recede away from you; light colors advance toward you. So, for example, if a client feels that the ceilings are too low, we will paint the ceilings with a darker color to visually lift the ceiling. If you paint a small room a darker color, it will give it a greater sense of depth,” he says. “Consider landscape fencing around a pool: You will see right through a black fence out to the scenery beyond while a white fence will pop up right in front of your face.”
The Pantone 2023 Color of the Year is Viva Magenta, a bold, empowering pink. “We will see lots of jewel tones in the coming year: rich vivid indigo blues, jade greens, vibrant oranges, purples and pinks in all shades,” Moran says. “These colors are great for accent walls balanced with one of the many shades of white available. Many people aren’t aware that there are 1,000-plus shades of white. The jewel tone draws the eye, so pairing it with the right white is important to provide the statement you wish to make and what feature you’re looking to accentuate. There is a big difference between a color sample and how the color looks on the wall. With our color coordinating expertise, we provide guidance for any color questions.”
Wallpaper is also having a resurgence—but with a twist. “We like to use three-dimensional textured wallpapers that give a more interesting and updated look that often makes the room feel more spacious. Today’s wallpapers are not what you remember at Grandma’s house,” Malian says. “There’s a wonderful variety in new wallpaper designs that are traditional, whimsical, modern or totally abstract. Wallpaper is huge today.”
Malian says natural materials like stone, marble and wood always have been popular. Satin and matte finishes on wooden floors—a modern look that surpasses the more dated semi-gloss floors, are popular as well. Some finishes, however, never go out of style. “Stainless-steel appliances have been fashionable since at least the 1980s,” he notes.
“We will see lots of jewel tones in the coming year: rich vivid indigo blues, jade greens, vibrant oranges, purples and pinks in all shades.”
—Steve Moran
Moran is seeing a surge in the “Romantic Modernism” style, which espouses a comfy, cozy and romantic but more modern aesthetic. “As an example, we have designed and built a marble contemporary bathroom and paired it with a piece of French traditional furniture as an accent,” he says. “A key to good design is to give the room a layered look that does not always necessitate going to a store to buy furniture. We use pieces the client has collected over years and pull them together in a cohesive way.”
“We design and build in a way that reflects the client’s personality and suggest amenities we know
our clients would like,” Malian says. For example, they have placed laundry rooms within master closets, built curb-less showers with linear drains, included niches in the shower to hold shampoo bottles, have installed sound systems throughout houses and selected cabinets that maximize storage.
They emphasize that they like to have fun with their clients. “Laughter is very important, and we’re delighted that many clients have become friends,” Malian says.

Every other year, the area’s top interior and landscape designers are presented with a challenge: to take a space at an esteemed historic estate in the Morris or Somerset area and create magic. Mansion in May, the preeminent designer showhouse in the New Jersey–New York area presented by the Women’s Association for Morristown Medical Center, celebrated its 20th installment this year. Proceeds benefitted the expansion and modernization of the Institute of Bioskills Training and Innovation at Morristown Medical Center, which allows health and medical providers to practice clinical skills through simulation.
This year’s selected grand estate was Three Fields in Mendham, a 9,000-square-foot stone, brick and tile-roofed French manor–style home, designed by New York architect Greville Rickard and situated on almost 36 acres of pastoral, rolling fields.
After visitors tour the grounds, they cast a vote for their favorite interior and landscape design. The winners in each category receive the Tulip Award, the event’s
highest honor. “Moor and Mountain,” designed by Sam Ciardi of Samuel Robert Signature Spaces, won for interior design. Ciardi says the design for the rustic but regal retreat was inspired by a desire to create a space in which people could come in from the cold, curl up by the fireplace and enjoy the holiday in a majestic, yet cozy, cabin.
The Tulip Award for landscape design went to “Petite Parterre,” by Erika Mantz and Anthony Sblendorio of Back to Nature Home & Garden who transformed the area in front of the pool house. It was inspired by the iconic parterre gardens of the French countryside. A modern twist on the classic garden layout delivered an explosion of blooms in a gradient of colors, framed by a compact hedge. An antique olive jar planted with cascading annuals acted as a centerpiece, using viewpoints from the pool house and adjacent landscape spaces.

ARTICLE BY PATTI ZIELINSKI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY WING WONGBrynn Hudson had no education or experience in jewelry design when she left a career in social work and founded Brynn Hudson Jewelry in 2006. Here, she discusses the lessons she learned from just jumping in with both feet.
HOW DID THE IDEA OF LAUNCHING A JEWELRY DESIGN BUSINESS COME ABOUT?
It started one afternoon when a ring I was wearing came apart. While examining the broken piece, I was amazed to discover just how simple the design and production was. A light bulb went off, and I thought, “I can do that!”
I love chunky, yet elegant and versatile jewelry, which was hard to find. I realized that the only solution was to begin designing my own. I bought a book on jewelry design techniques and materials. Through some basic design classes and a lot of trial and error, I was able to teach myself many construction and design techniques. Then, I researched factories that could take my design ideas to fruition.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR AESTHETIC?
My lifelong approach to fashion is bold timelessness. I have always been drawn toward a look that is simple, yet striking. I design each piece to have a unique and full, rich look, while at the same time being eye-catching in its grace and elegance.
My custom-made jewelry is designed to be worn for any occasion—from casual wear to the country club.
The main challenge I initially faced was trying to figure out how to get a jewelry design business off the ground when I had no prior experience. Sourcing the necessary materials and finding the right factories to produce my designs was a difficult task, and one that took several attempts to get right.
An ongoing challenge is marketing. The jewelry market is saturated, so I am on a daily quest to find new ways to get my jewelry seen and to grow my business.
Although it can be a struggle, I do my best to dedicate 100 percent of my time to my work when my kids—Tatum, 11, and Carter, 13—are in school. Of course, this does not always go according to plan, and work can bleed into family time.
Having my husband, Blake, right by my side since the day Carter was born has been a blessing. Since he always has worked from home, I have had the privilege of having someone to help me with parenting duties.
I am originally from Mendham. I left for college, but I moved back in 2009.
I run every single day, 365 days a year. I never miss a day.
No matter how hard it gets or how many times you are told “no,” just keep on going. Don’t give up. It will all fall into place.

Most of us can say we have that one staple black dress that can be worn at any occasion, and the classic look is not only popular but is elegant and timeless. It is one of the most versatile items we own, never goes out of style and looks good on anyone. But how did this classic look originate?
Prior to the 1920’s, black was reserved for funeral wear, but when Coco Channel made the bold move to print a short, black dress on the cover of Vogue in 1926, all of that changed. The popularity of the black dress skyrocketed, and it became one of the most influential pieces of clothing. Because of its affordability, black remained a popular choice during The Great Depression. The black dress had another boom in popularity when “Breakfast at Tiffany’s’’ debuted, and Audrey Hepburn showcased her iconic black dress with long, black gloves.
We enlisted the help of stylist, Amani Skalacki, to show us how versatile the little black dress can be. “We usually think of the little black dress as a piece you wear to an event. However, because black is so flattering on all body types and skin tones, women have multiple black dresses from casual to evening,” Amani says.
“A sequin dress can be dressed up with heels, or that same dress can be transformed into a casual outfit with the addition of tennis shoes and an oversized blazer or a denim jacket. Transform that strappy dress you have been wearing all summer into an outfit that is perfect for chilly fall temperatures. Add a narrow scarf, a leather jacket and sandals or a tall pointy boot, and you have a whole new look for an evening out,” Amani adds.
If you have a dress in the back of your closet that you haven’t worn in years, don’t be afraid to dust it off and give it new life.
Are you looking for the best cut or style of dress that works best for your body type?

Osteria Morini in Bernardsville Shares a Back-to-School Dish the Whole Family Will Love
The Osteria Morini Pasta al Limone, with its bright lemon-forward flavors, is a perfect light pasta for late summer.
This dish originates in southern Italy, specifically in the Sorrentino peninsula where lemons are prized, and traditionally uses spaghetti, but any shape can be selected.
Some pro tips: This pasta is usually made with cream and with the technique of a cacio e pepe (“cheese and pepper”) style pasta, but we use pasta water with cheese to make the sauce, which keeps the dish on the lighter side. Be sure to keep your pasta water on hand as you build the dish.
Serves 3-4
• 16 oz spaghetti (cook a little under the cooking instructions)
• 2 tbsp olive oil
• 2 cloves thinly sliced garlic
• 1 lemon (zest and juice)
• 1 tsp picked thyme
• 1/4 c plus pasta water
• 1/3 c grated pecorino
• 2 tbsp butter
• Fresh cracked black pepper
• 8 oz Maryland jumbo lump crab meat (optional)
• 1/4 c diced zucchini (blanched)
• Salt, to taste
• 2 tbsp toasted breadcrumbs (optional)
01. Season pasta water with salt and cook pasta or undercook by 2 to 3 minutes per cooking instructions.
02. In a large sauté pan set on low, heat olive oil and add garlic until slightly cooked and fragrant (do not brown).
03. Add zest, lemon juice and thyme. Transfer pasta with cooking liquid. The starch in the liquid combined with the movement of the pan will start to create the sauce. (If it is dry, add more cooking liquid. If you add too much, it will eventually reduce.)
04. Add cheese and butter, while keeping the pan moving. Crack fresh pepper and fold in jumbo crab meat and zucchini. Salt to taste.
05. Divide pasta among bowls. Top with toasted breadcrumbs.
06. Add extra zest on top if desired.

Tara Quinn is on a quest to help people look and feel better about their skin. The physician assistant worked in the medical field for about nine years before opening T-Bella Med Spa in Readington in 2022. Here, Quinn discusses how a med spa treatment can improve your appearance.
WHAT DOES THE NAME MEAN?
“Tara-Bella” is my family nickname, which I shortened to “T-Bella.” It fits perfectly since “Bella” means beautiful and at T-Bella Med Spa, we strive for all of our patients to feel their absolute best and their most beautiful.
Many people think a med spa is a spa, but they are actually medical practices employed with highly skilled, trained, licensed medical practitioners. They also think that dermal fillers make it look like you had a beauty enhancement. However, the majority of dermal fillers contain hyaluronic
acid, a compound that your body naturally produces. Fillers, when done correctly, rejuvenate the skin and make problem areas look younger. That is why it is important to go to highly skilled medical practitioners for these procedures. These products are used to create natural-looking results and help to replace the normal loss of soft tissue as we age.
Another misconception is that non-invasive treatments are not medical procedures. However, the use of any FDAapproved medical devices and/or medications make the treatment a medical procedure. This includes cool sculpting and SkinPen microneedling.
Finally, people think they should always shop around for the cheapest price on filler and Botox. What’s most important is the skill, talent, aesthetic sense and expertise of the medical practitioner performing the aesthetic treatments. The process is similar to commissioning a beautiful piece of art. The type of paint or clay being used is secondary. What’s paramount is the skin and vision of the artist.
People think that Botox includes a poisonous compound, but it is an FDA-approved product used for treating various medical conditions. The main ingredient of Botox is a neurotoxin—botulinum toxin type A—that influences brain signals to muscles. Reduced muscle contractions limit the movement of your muscles, which then results in less wrinkles and fine lines.
Research has shown that Botox helps prevent new wrinkles from forming and is being used more frequently as a preventative aesthetic treatment. Since our practitioners are highly skilled and knowledgeable of facial anatomy, the result is natural-looking; your face will not be frozen.
These injections also can be used to treat excessive sweating in areas like your hands and feet, armpits, forehead, and upper lip. Botox is also used in treating TMJ as well as migraine headaches.
In addition to Botox, we offer other neuromodulators—Dysport and Daxxify—and several lines of dermal fillers. As we get older, we lose bone and soft tissue in our face. Our fat pads and structural support beneath the skin shifts. Dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the body, which can replace volume in the face, give a fuller lip plump, enhance certain facial features, treat moderate to severe wrinkles or facial folds and help even out facial asymmetries. Dermal fillers also can be used in the hands, which can prematurely show your age, and in the earlobes, which can help your earrings sit correctly.
Lasers are minimally invasive cosmetic procedures that can remove unwanted hair,
provide skin resurfacing, remove sun damage and improve active acne in adults and teens.
We are one of the few med spas in New Jersey to provide the world’s first Hybrid Fractional Laser, which combines ablative and non-ablative wavelengths to the same microscopic treatment zone, which maximizes results, reduces downtime and minimizes discomfort. This is excellent for reducing the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, sun damage and enlarged pores.
Depending on the type of treatment you receive, you may need to come in every four weeks for about two to three treatments or two to three times a year. For laser hair removal, you will come in once every four to six weeks for about six to eight treatments. Then, it’s just maintenance whenever you see hair growth.
B-12 shots are minimally invasive treatments that offer many important benefits, such as boosting your metabolism and energy levels, strengthening immune function, enhancing mood, improving sleep and concentration, and promoting healthy hair, skin and nails. The vitamin is injected directly into your muscle, which allows your tissues to absorb it quickly, allowing it to reach your bloodstream as soon as possible. B-12 is one of a handful of vitamins that your liver can store for long-term use. Injecting the vitamin directly into your muscle allows it to maintain its potency for maximum benefits. You may begin to feel the effects of a B-12 shot within just four to 72 hours after injection.

Finding the right housing for a senior to age gracefully in is one of the most difficult decisions a family can face.
There are so many options—assisted living, independent living, nursing homes, care homes—that it is hard to determine where to start the search, much less what the best option is.
That’s where Eric Moore, the owner of Assisted Living Locators, comes in.
A senior care and living advisor serving North Central New Jersey, Moore specializes in cutting through the red tape, providing swift solutions.
I wish I had known about such resources when I was going through these issues with the seniors in my life.
SENIOR CARE IS SUCH A DAUNTING SUBJECT—ONE THAT NOBODY REALLY WANTS TO TALK ABOUT, MUCH LESS DEAL WITH. IT’S SO OVERWHELMING. WHAT DO YOU DO TO EASE THE STRESS?
Senior placement is a very personalized service, and my role is that of an advocate and resource person. I set up an in-person meeting with the senior and the senior’s family, at the home, rehab center or hospital. I want to understand the big picture, so we discuss everything from their current situation, their care needs and community resources to what’s financially doable. I also can help them make connections with lawyers and other professionals they may need.
WHAT’S THE NEXT STEP?
I come up with a list of options that meet their goals and financial situation and generally recommend two to three good communities and/or home-based care choices. I go with them on tours of the communities. In many ways, my role is similar to that of a real estate agent: I show them the properties so they can get a feel for the culture and amenities of each. And if they don’t have any family members to help, I can guide them through the entire process.
THIS MAKES ME FEEL RELIEVED ALREADY, BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE IT COULD BE EXPENSIVE, ESPECIALLY FOR THOSE WITH LIMITED RESOURCES. All of my work is done at no cost to the family. I’m paid a referral fee by the senior living centers and partners I work with. Right now, I have more than 50 partners.
CONTINUED >
Many times, people wait until the last minute, when there’s a crisis and someone’s in the hospital. So they are forced to make a decision quickly, which only adds to the stress of the situation. It’s good to meet with someone like me when you’re not in crisis mode so you can look at your options down the road.
You’re not alone. Most people don’t know that the kind of work Assisted Living Locators does and the type of role I have exist. Senior placement is a relatively young industry. Assisted Living Locators wasn’t founded until 20 years ago. We have franchises all over the country, but the concept is much more prevalent in major retirement areas such as Arizona and Florida.
Many people have this idea of the really depressing clinical nursing home scenario of many years ago, and they think, “Someone’s putting me in a home.” Nowadays, the communities are geared to providing a good way of life, spiritually and medically.
It’s a good idea to talk to me or someone like me, whether it’s about your needs today or something for two years from now. As for myself, I wish I had known about such resources when I was going through these issues with the seniors in my life.
