I don’t know about you but I love any opportunity to recognize the women in my life who just make life itself richer and more beautiful. Mothers, daughters, mentors and friends are the ones who make life so rich. Women, with special talents and big hearts, are some of the most influential people in our lives.
And of course with Mother’s Day this month, all eyes are on moms… But it’s not just the biological mothers we celebrate, it’s also the mother figures in our lives who have made an indelible impact on us. All sorts of women do awesome things in our communities and pour goodness into our lives. Let’s not forget family members, teachers, and women we admire from afar. These special ladies and the extra efforts they make are unforgettable and irreplaceable.
The women in my life are so close. We are a multigenerational team that started with my great-grandmother flowing through each of us now including my daughter. I am proud to have had five generations of women in my life to set an example for being ladylike—and for being a trailblazer. There are so many local women who have also left an imprint on me for these same reasons—they are classic beauties with brains and brawn. I love that combo! Shelly Pisors, Shelby Duplessis, Amy Malloy, Amy VanderLinden, Maria Kohayan, and our own Managing Editor, Susan Lanier-Graham. I am proud to have these women as role models influencing my own development.
While it’s always important to shop local and support our area businesses, this month is the perfect time to patronize businesses owned by women in our communities. That’s one of my favorite parts of this role—connecting with and championing the best of the best when it comes to North Peoria’s women.
They are movers and shakers, builders and makers. They are both seen and unseen. Their silent service blesses those who are under their care. Their attention to detail shows us something about beauty that can’t be seen or understood any other way.
I hope you’ll take a few minutes to send a text, make a phone call or get your kids on a video call with the women in your life who deserve recognition. It only takes a minute to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much you love them.

Where neighbors can see and be seen.
Keili “KC” Summey began her love affair with plants in high school, where she was a member of the National FFA Organization at Arizona Agribusiness & Equine Center - Paradise Valley Campus.
In October 2020, Summey launched KC’s Floral Designs ( KCSFlorals.com) to honor her grandmother. She moved her business to North Peoria in August 2022.
Summey loves the power that flowers have to lift spirits. “Studies have shown that flowers trigger our ‘happy emotions’. Having them around is a natural way to improve our mental and emotional health.”
KC’s Florals offers “Coffee + Flowers” to locals to further that flower power every Friday. They partner with Mamacita’s Homemade Goods and offer $25 fresh flower bouquets delivered to your home or office. “By bringing flowers into your space,” Summey says, “it automatically causes a small shift in your mindset and approach to life. We call it That Flower Feeling.”
Summey had a chance to prove her flower chops in the National Battle of the Blooms, a Chopped-style floral competition hosted by the renowned Mayesh Wholesale Florist out of Los Angeles and Miami.
In the first round, Arizona competitors had 30 minutes to design from a bucket of surprise blooms they unwrapped at the start of the competition. Summey won and moved on to the national competition.
“As an Arizona native, I wanted to showcase the beauty of the Arizona desert in my design,” Summey explains. Before the competition, she worked with The King and the Flower, a local artisan pottery maker, to curate a custom Southwestern-style vessel. She also carried along some rolling Tumbleweed she found to use instead of toxic floral foam.
When she arrived at the competition and revealed the surprise blooms, it was mostly tropical blooms!
“This allowed me to pay homage to my Polynesian roots, and I was able to truly create ME in a vase.”
The 5,000 voters understood Summey’s vision, and she took home the Grand Prize.
Summey draws inspiration from the Southwest. “The Arizona desert is full of texture and unique elements,” she says. “This is exactly the vibe I like to bring into my designs.” She incorporates unexpected ingredients into her designs—succulents, citrus, nopales and tumbleweed.
“Take a wooden kabob skewer with a little hot glue and stick it into the end of succulents or cacti. This gives you a stem so you can use them in arrangements.”
Summey forages local plants and wildflowers, careful not to take more than 10% of the plant. She recommends desert blooms like globemallow or textured elements such as pampas grass and tumbleweed. She also uses olive trees, eucalyptus and acacia.
Summey explains that 80% of flowers sold in the U.S. are imported. “When you buy blooms from your local farmer or florist, you support someone’s passion—a family-owned business.”
Shopping locally means fresher blooms. Flowers shipped from abroad are dry packaged for days, only getting water when they arrive at the grocery store. However, when you buy locally, the blooms are usually cut fresh and immediately placed in water, meaning they last longer.
“Our rule of thumb is to shop local blooms first, then fill in the rest,” says Summey.
Spring is the perfect season for Arizona blooms. In May, you can find campanula, snapdragons, sunflowers, scabiosa, larkspur, statice, gladiolus, roses and more. KC’s Floral Designs works closely with several local growers, including Johns Plant Adventures (@ Johns_Plant_adventures) in the East Valley.
Summey encourages sustainability in the floral industry. All the flowers that go into a big wedding or event are thrown away at night’s end. Summey hates the thought of that kind of waste. To support her desire for a more sustainable industry, KC’s Floral Designs partners with Floranthropy AZ, a non-profit organization that gives wedding/event flowers a second life by donating arrangements to local senior facilities and hospitals.
“We know that flowers are a natural mood-booster,” explains Summey, “so it’s a perfect way to give back to the community.”
Summey works hard to utilize bio-degradable mechanics instead of toxic floral foam. The green foam contains microplastics, formaldehyde and other toxic chemicals, making it bad for water supplies, landfills and our lungs.
KC’s Floral Designs uses water tubes in designs or soaks moss to help keep stems hydrated. Summey explains this makes the flowers last longer than with floral foam.
KC’s Floral Designs hosts private classes for anyone who wants to learn more about sustainable floral designs.

Over the past few years, the West Valley has been one of the fastest-growing areas in the Valley. Thousands of new residents now call the area home and with dozens of new construction projects on the docket, more are likely on the way.
Amy Malloy, Managing Principal of Evolve Ventures, says that the market demand for to-market restaurants and retail in the area is growing. “I feel fortunate to have worked in commercial development for the last 16 years throughout the Phoenix area and to now utilize that experience and contacts to benefit the West Valley.”
Malloy shares that in the post-COVID world with more flexible work schedules, the demand for high-quality, local restaurants and retail available during daytime weekly hours continues to grow. She predicts development will be huge in that sector over the next few years.
One of the biggest new developments is The Trailhead, a mixed-use facility at the northeast corner of 83rd Avenue/Westwing Parkway and Happy Valley Road.
One of the key players behind this project is Arizona native Jim Pederson, CEO of Pederson Group, Inc. Pederson formed the Pederson Group in 1983, specializing in developing and managing high-end shopping centers. Over the years, he and his team have developed over 30 retail and office projects throughout the state.
Pederson says the objective for The Trailhead is to provide quality retail services to the neighborhood that stand the test of time. “It is important to us to bring a quality tenant mix, including restaurants and specialty retailers. We pride ourselves on creating an innovative, welcoming design that brings a human scale to commercial development, creating an inviting environment.”
The Trailhead project will be a mix of interconnected uses, including a grocery-anchored shopping center with a restaurant and entertainment focus, multifamily residential and a church.
“The retail portion will incorporate a large outdoor amenity area in-between one of the restaurant and shop clusters where people can gather,” Pederson explains.
Shelby Duplessis, PE, President of Land Development with Empire Group of Companies, says projects are constantly popping up across the West Valley. Her company’s latest project will bring new homes to the area. The Village at Pioneer Park is a build-for-rent development of 332 one-, two- and three-bedroom homes.
This new housing development on the southwest corner of 83rd Avenue and Olive in Peoria is aimed at helping with a housing shortage in the area, offering some cool places to live.
This project took a lot of collaboration and effort. “We worked closely with the City of Peoria staff and Councilwoman Vicki Hunt, as it was crucial to us not just to drop our community into the area, but to become a part of the area and capture the farming and irrigation history,” adds Duplessis. “To celebrate and keep some of this history, we incorporated white split rail fencing and wagon wheels as part of our monumentation. We also included community gardens for residents to enjoy.”
Duplessis shares that the group went with the different bedroom and home types to give people options. “Many are choosing a much simpler lifestyle and don’t want to be tied to their home cleaning and yard maintenance, and some don’t want to be in typical apartment-style homes with people living adjacent to them. This has created a demand for a diverse housing portfolio, including build-for-rent developments as well as traditional single-family and multi-family developments.”
“The Trailhead will be a very important component of this thriving neighborhood, bringing much-desired uses and amenities to the community.” — Jim Pederson, CEO, Pederson Group, Inc.
Many of these projects aim to give residents in the Northwest Valley the feel of a special and unique place. The Carefree Partners Investments team aims to do that with its latest project in Surprise.
“We have the opportunity to create that for residents in Surprise,” says Carefree Partners’ Business Development Manager, Rico West. West, a North Peoria resident,
and second-generation developer, hopes to help boost the life and livelihood of residents in the West Valley.
“For our Surprise City Center project, we’re approved to develop 33 million square feet of buildings for this project. We can build up to 15 stories, and this will be a premier destination of the West Valley for high-density residential, shopping, restaurants, parks and employment.”

“West Valley cities are investing in the critical aspects of communities, including outdoor and recreational amenities, and strong city services.
The sky’s the limit for the Northwest Valley.” — Amy Malloy
I recently had the opportunity to visit FACE FOUNDRIÉ, a facial bar in Park West. I was so impressed with my treatment (the Cryo Queen—see the next page for details) that I followed up with questions for Lauren Theobald, franchise owner of FACE FOUNDRIÉ in Peoria and Phoenix.
Theobald wanted to open her own business and felt aligning with a company she could feel passionate about was critical. When she discovered FACE FOUNDRIÉ ( FaceFoundrie.com/location/peoria), she knew it checked all the boxes: it is woman-owned, consumer-driven, prioritizes continued education and professional growth and has a mission to make skincare accessible and attainable for everyone.
Theobald opened Arizona’s first facial bar in Phoenix in November 2021 and debuted the Peoria location at Park West in December 2022.
FACE FOUNDRIÉ is a focused facial bar specializing in all things face: facials, brows, lashes and skincare. Theobald believes that effective skincare shouldn’t be complicated or even aspirational. “What sets us apart is how we empower customers to look and feel their best through attainable pricing, effective services and an expert staff that deeply cares about your best self.”
Theobald references all the advertisements for great skincare products. “They may be great,” she explains, “but not necessarily what works best for you.”
At FACE FOUNDRIÉ, personalized consultations are exactly that—personal. The trained staff will show you what products to use, why and how they will work best for you. “When you have a regimen that aligns with your goals,” says Theobald, “that’s when you can trust it will be most effective.”
Theobald explains that facials are essential in helping maintain and build on a daily skincare routine. Monthly memberships are ideal for benefiting from more treatment-focused services, such as chemical peels, HydraFacials and extractions. All of these provide enhanced results when you combine them with a consistent at-home routine. And that routine can be simple—or you can add more components depending on your skincare wants and needs.
FACE FOUNDRIÉ was created to bring accessible, affordable, personalized skincare for every client. You can usually make same-day appointments and prices start at just $45 for mini facials.
Theobald stresses that affordability does not equal less. “Even though our services are affordable, we’ve gone to great lengths to provide a luxury experience that feels like an escape from the minute you walk in the door through check out. We love rolling out the red carpets for our clients!”
Comfortable service areas can be curtained off for privacy—or thrown open for a party. The open concept caters to Face Parties, including wellness events, bridal celebrations, birthdays, anniversaries and more. It’s ideal for couples and FACE FOUNDRIÉ even hosts corporate events.
True to its namesake, The Sculpt is a workout for your face. It includes facial cupping and a signature Hungarian massage. It is great for lymphatic drainage, releasing tension and tightening and toning the skin. This facial delivers immediate transformation and is the ultimate marriage of relaxation and effectiveness.
Cryo Queen uses Cryotherapy to target aging and hormonal concerns, stimulate blood flow and increase collagen production. This treatment includes LED therapy. Choose between blue LED, which tackles hormonal breakouts, or red LED, which improves skin tone and circulation and reduces the appearance of fine lines.
This gentle focused treatment uses a medical-grade scalpel to remove the top layer of dead skin and peach fuzz, giving you instant softer, brighter skin.
Tina Wheeler watched her romantic suspense novel, Ranch Under Fire, a Love Inspired Suspense paperback published by Harlequin, debut recently at #10 on the Publishers Weekly Bestseller list. But her “overnight success” was years in the making. “My advice to every aspiring author is to learn your craft and write, write, write,” says Wheeler.
I was born and raised in Arizona and taught school for twenty-five years. Twenty years ago, I was skimming through career guides at the Foothills Library with my daughter. I came across the address for a romance writers association and decided to try it. After a few years of learning and practicing, I sold a romantic suspense to a small press, became a Kindle Scout winner (like American Idol for books) with a romantic mystery and self-published eight cozy mysteries. I finally sold to Harlequin in 2022.
My membership in Valley of the Sun Romance Writers ( ValleyoftheSunWriters.com) paved the way for me. I learned how to write and market my novels. Plus, networking provided insights into the industry and led me to critique partners who have become lifelong friends. I meet with several published authors at Cucina Tagliani in Arrowhead twice a month.
Ranch Under Fire is available from Barnes & Noble and on Amazon. Ranch Showdown is available in late July.
Marina DeWit and James Bernau became longtime family friends after meeting through their children’s mutual activities for over a decade. As with so many others, COVID brought lots of changes. It created a pivotal opportunity for these entrepreneurs to co-own a new business that can help the community. Drawing on their previous experience in both corporate and small business, they became the local dealership for One Day Doors & Closets of Arizona (OneDayDoorsAZ.com).
New interior doors, whether bedroom, pantry, closet or others, can completely change the look of your home. And for many, their houses are getting older—meaning the doors look outdated or bland and can negatively impact the rest of the home’s style. The challenge for homeowners is that replacing interior doors has always been a substantial undertaking.
Until recently.
Choosing doors at a big box store typically means minimal options of door styles and sizes, along with the fact that doors off the shelf will not fit a homeowner’s existing doorjambs. Door installation is difficult in existing homes due to foundation settling, uneven flooring, odd door sizes, and bowed jambs. It becomes an invasive house project that involves removing existing doorframes, installing pre-hung doors, patching, and painting while taking weeks of living in a construction zone with a contractor or handyman constantly present.
“We’re Arizona’s premier interior door replacement company and have the highest customer rating over any other company,” says Bernau. “We replace your interior doors in just one day without any messy construction in your house. The doors are precisely measured to the existing frames, custom crafted, and professionally painted, ensuring beautiful doors that arrive at the home and are installed in just a few hours.”
The pair opened for business just a year ago and have been awarded “Rookies of the Year” by One Day Doors & Closets because of their commitment to quality and high standards of customer service.
With the revolutionary 3D measuring technology, One Day Doors provides custom-fit interior doors without replacing the door frames. DeWit adds, “We save you time and money while transforming your home to the style you want, stress-free.”
One Day Doors & Closets of Arizona offers a large selection of styles for interior doors, as well as closet doors, barn doors and closet organizers. Customers can visit the North Phoenix showroom to make selections to fit their unique tastes and transform their homes.
“We can replace 20-25 doors in just one day,” Bernau states. “For most contractors, that would take over two weeks. And we pride ourselves on the white glove service. We’re registered contractors and have over 30 years of combined experience with our employees.”
He continues, “We make it a smooth experience from beginning to end.”
1. Call for a free, in-home consultation.
2. Visit the showroom to choose the door style, weight, paint color, and hardware options.
3. The one-day measure technician will measure the door frames with the company’s proprietary 3D measuring technology.
4. The new doors will be custom-crafted and painted in the One Day Doors & Closets factory.
5. The home is transformed with custom doors installed in just a few hours.
The partners share that what they most enjoy about the business, besides the great team, is helping customers see their visions become a reality and exceeding expectations.
“We’re a small local business that can provide customers with the best home improvement experience. Our doors can be installed in record time without mess, hassle or extreme cost. You will love what doors do!” DeWit concludes.

Find a puzzle with an image you know your mom will love (or make a custom one using a photo of the two of you) and put it together over wine and snacks. You’ll be amazed at how much chatting you can get done while puzzling.
